(Pointless waffle.....)
Shameem Ahsan, chairman of IT company eGeneration and a former head of BASIS, sees Bangladesh's tech niche at the cutting edge of IT. "Forty years ago, the garment industry started with a few companies. Now Bangladesh is exporting $30 billion-plus worth and is second only to China. We want to do the same thing in the IT industry," he said.
Bangladesh is hoping to challenge India in pharmaceuticals, too. With its "least developed country" status, the country has enjoyed a waiver on drug patents. This has fueled intensifying competition between India and Bangladesh in the field of generic and bulk drugs. Among local star performers is Incepta Pharmaceuticals, Bangladesh's second-largest generics maker, which exports to about 60 countries, and Popular Pharmaceuticals, which is eyeing an eventual listing.
What do the maulaners think about the other lady winning this time?

Hasina may win. It is good with IT and pharma. Will require Indians to migrate as BM population is not highly skilled as of now just like Malaysia.

Why Delhi should be watching approaching elections in Dhaka very closely.

Bangladesh's 11th parliamentary elections are hardly two weeks away — and there are already ominous signs of the possibility of violence as the dates draw closer. Earlier this week, Dr Kamal Hossain, the principal convener of the Jaitya Oikya Manch and founder-leader of the Gano Forum, came under attack when his motorcade was targeted by miscreants as he returned from the country's martyrs' memorial.

Rattled by the attack, Dr Kamal described such attacks as an insult to the freedom fighters. He was also seen losing his cool while interacting with the media.

Dr Kamal Hossain, the principal convener of Jaitya Oikya Manch, was recently attacked. (Photo: Reuters)

It may be recalled that Dr Kamal was one of the closest comrades of the father of the Bengali nation, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and was the first foreign minister of independent Bangladesh.

A constitutional expert and a lawyer of international repute, Dr Hossain parted ways with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and decided to contest elections with two major issues/demands in his game plan.

One is a call for the dissolution of Parliament and the second is the release of Khaleda Zia from prison. His demand for releasing Khaleda, who is facing corruption charges, is reflective of Dr Kamal’s frustration apparently to get to power as he is over 80 years old now and aspires to become Prime Minister – a post he may have wanted to hold for the last few decades.

For him, it’s now or never.

Also, Dr Kamal’s support to Khaleda and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has surprised many in the secular and pro-liberation camp. Moreover, the BNP is supporting Jamaat amid reports that 25 Jamaat candidates will be fielded by the BNP as claimed by its organising secretary, Matiur Rahman Anand.

Khaleda Zia is in prison facing corruption charges. She has been effectively nullified in these polls. (Photo: Reuters)

Needless to stress, Jamaat has always been anti-liberation and opposed to the independence of Bangladesh. In fact, they had collaborated with the occupying forces of Pakistan in the killing of many members of minority groups and freedom fighters as well. Support to such elements by Dr Kamal belies all rationale now as well as his initial ideology.

It would not be out of context to mention that a US Congressman, Jim Banks, cautioned against the activities of the Jamaat while speaking at the Hudson Institute recently, alleging that Jamaat elements are such radical groups who always try to sabotage pro-democracy and secular forces. In sum, the West also remains alarmed by such rabid fundamentalist parties, subtly putting it across that such forces should not come to power.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s ongoing nexus with the BNP was revealed recently after an interception exposed senior BNP leader Khandekar Mosharraf Hossain talking to a Pakistani ISI operative calling from the UAE. In the conversation, he was heard reportedly seeking help from Pakistan during the elections. Obviously, he wanted money and logistical support in an apparent bid to unseat Sheikh Hasina's government.

In the meantime, reports say that the Supreme Court in Dhaka has decided that Khaleda Zia cannot run for elections as per the ruling that those sentenced over two years are ineligible to contest polls. Her fate is sealed and her charisma remains underutilised for any campaigning in these elections.

As far as Pakistan’s meddling in the internal affairs of Bangladesh goes, it is nothing new. The Pakistani High Commission in Dhaka has reportedly been very active in espionage activities. There have been numerous cases of Pakistani diplomats and staffers being declared persona non grata, their subsequent expulsion following.

Also, the BNP's association with the ISI – including a close relationship with exiled BNP leader Tareq Rahman – is well-known. Assuming Dr Kamal comes to power, his dreams could be fulfilled but within a short time, he and his cronies are likely to be thrown out for Tareq to assume full control and authority, thus reinforcing more robust ties with Pakistan .

By implication, it would then mean the resurgence and rehabilitation of Indian Insurgent Groups (IIGs) on Bangladeshi turf and Pakistan calling the shots.

Therefore, the latest developments amid electioneering call for a serious proactive role by India to ensure that Hasina is able to thwart all Pakistani attempts to support the BNP using the ISI as noticed in the recent intercepts.

As election fever rises, large-scale violence appears likely with the campaigning steadily picking up tempo. Jamaat goons and radical groups like Jamaitul-Mujahideen-Bangladesh (JMB), Hifazat-e-Islam, Hijbut-Tehreer, etc., might stage violence to impede smooth conduct of elections to stop Hasina from coming to power.

It is assumed the armed forces are with the ruling establishment under General Aziz and are likely to play an effective and deterrent role to maintain law and order during the elections.

Hasina tried desperately to leverage her relationship with India to get a very favorable accord on the teesta waters. She fully expected an IWT like agreement where India would again give away a massive share of the waters but was stymied by mamta's intransigence and IMVHO, very rightly so.

hasina also tried playing off India vs china to arm twist first MMS and then Modi to unbelt on one sided agreements in beedis favor and in return was not willing to give anything meaningful.

If she had got the waters, she would have swept into power without question.

Whatever hasina may parrot publicly, she also knows that there is a very strong undercurrent of resentment against India among the local beedi populace that is long standing and historic in nature and the nature of their state religion is the root cause of it.

OTOH, mamta has enjoyed for free, a lot of the choicest hilsa, sent by hasina in her numerous attempts to soften mamta begum and get her to give up the teesta waters.

among other things, the pakis use the beedis to smuggle in vast quantities of counterfeit Indian currency produced by the ISI.

I was thinking more on the lines of applying the "Pakistan Solution"to this particular issue; just to mix up the political scene and observe what ensues;more particularly of their faith's virulent strain in their current growth climate.
Rakhine has always been a sore spot for the bds, though wb and ne are more so, though they make lack the wheat associated martial insanity of their former masters.

they have stayed relatively quiet so far on the premise of forthcoming goodies from India that hasina was able to leverage.

Since that has not happened in the quantity that the local beedis wanted, the tide may slowly turn with hasina being less able to control them.

need to wait and watch. This govt may not be quite so generous with khaleda, knowing well her propensities.

cross border surgical strikes by the IA has made several recalcitrant neighbors wary of the consequences of supporting the likes of ULFA, NLFT, NDFB and NSCN.

Modi is increasingly being seen as someone not to be trifled with.

Battle for Bangladesh.

After a gap of over a decade, Bangladesh is again in the midst of a high voltage electoral battle. With the country’s main Opposition, Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) deciding to participate in the 11th parliamentary election — unlike its 2014 election boycott which gave the Awami League (AL) helmed by Sheikh Hasina a walkover — this face-off is going to be a close one. This is because the BNP’s traditional ally, Jamaat-e-Islami, though barred now from contesting elections after being de-recognised by the Election Commission, has put its full weight behind the BNP. To present a united face, the BNP has also nominated 24 Jamatis as its candidates, including former razakars who fought against the Liberation War.

Pakistan-supported and funded Jamatis have not forgiven Hasina for sending its top leaders to the gallows for 1971 war crimes, and have resolved to defeat the AL at any cost. Its 5 per cent national voteshare, when added to the BNP’s assured vote share of over 30 per cent, presents the AL with a formidable rival. This combination has been gathering strength alongside Bangladesh’s legal luminary Dr Kamal Hossain and his four-party coalition, Jatiya Oikya Front (JOF). Hossain making common electoral cause with the BNP-JI combine has stunned the country’s secularists and Bengali nationalists. His desperate bid to promote the interest of this pro-Pak alliance has made many wonder if he is acting as Islamabad’s proxy. For instance, his replacing JOF candidates’ poll symbol, the rising sun, with that of the sheaf of paddy (BNP-JI), is being viewed as an attempt to reposition JOF’s identity vis-a-vis the pro-Pakistan combine, in order to highlight that his front and the Begum Zia-led coalition’s objectives are identical.

For Hasina, the election will be a litmus test of her policies and programmes, executed during the last one decade of her uninterrupted rule. This should positively impact the poll outcome, but she is weighed down by anti-incumbency factors, mostly corruption related, involving her party MPs and ministers. The irony is that the BNP has an even worse image when it comes to corruption and terror. Zia is serving a long jail term for embezzlement while her son, Tareq Zia, number two in the party, has also been sentenced to jail for money laundering on a massive scale. As a result, both, according to a court ruling, have been barred from contesting elections. However, former AL heavyweight and Sheikh Mujibur’s law minister and confidant, Hossain, and his JOF joining hands with the BNP-Jamaat “to rid the country of Hasina’s misrule” is still an imposing challenge. Former Chief Justice Shamsuddin Chowdhury says Islamabad’s prodding made Hossain change sides as Pakistan is keen to recover lost ground in Bangladesh. Hossain, with his deep American and Pakistani connections, was their natural choice. The fact that he had personal scores to settle with Hasina for not giving him his due in her party and the government was well-known. And, the Pakistanis thought that the election is one last opportunity of using Hossain to unseat Hasina.

The Americans are also averse to Hasina for not letting them build a deep sea port in one of the off-shore islands, which would have enabled an overwhelming US presence in the Bay of Bengal to counter the growing Chinese naval intrusion in that area. The US thinks that if Zia’s alliance wins, she would meet this particular American wish.

The flip side of Hossain’s switchover is that he has become the target for both the AL and BNP. While the AL calls him a “traitor”, those in the BNP-JI call him an “AL Trojan Horse”, out to rob them of their chance of gaining power. They allege that Hossain switched sides to become the BNP alliance’s prime ministerial face to deny Tareq Zia his rightful claim.

BNP leaders say Zia’s failing health may not make her an effective prime minister, which might also have acted as motivation for Hossain. There is also a strong anti-Tareq lobby in the BNP which is determined to stop him in his quest for greater power.

The BNP’s greatest weakness is that, organisationally, it is in disarray. For an election-oriented party, boycotting the 2014 polls was suicidal, as its organisational structure not only went into hibernation, but it also faced a slew of defections, making it dysfunctional.

The AL’s trump card is the way Hasina has brought about her country’s socio-economic transformation, almost boosting Bangladesh from being a “least developed” country to a developing nation. Her policies have made Bangladesh’s socio-economic indices the best among South Asian nations and her development strategy has become the model for Least Developed Countries. Her digitalisation of Bangladesh has resonated with over a million voters of the new generation who will be voting for the first time this year.

Bringing madrasa degrees at par with those of modern education has allowed the prospect of more jobs to madrasa passouts, thus winning their hearts and minds. Her electoral alliance with half a dozen Islamic parties and groups, like Hefajat-E-Islam, should garner more Muslim votes for the Awami League-led front. But her wooing of Islamic parties, achieved through significant compromises, has astonished even her staunch admirers.

One of Hasina’s worries is that the Hindus, 10 per cent of Bangladesh’s population, which has always served as the AL’s vote bank, are unhappy with the party. This is because some of its MPs have engineered attacks on their property in order to grab them. To assuage their sense of hurt, the AL has given party tickets to 18 Hindu candidates.

Hasina has addressed most of their major grievances, providing them many windows of opportunity to prosper. The BNP, well known for its notorious anti-Hindu stance, is also making desperate efforts to woo minorities. It has raised the number of its Hindu candidates to 14 from four in 2008 and floated the Hindu Mahajote to split Hindu votes. Since parliamentary elections in Bangladesh are often won by narrow margins, votes of minority communities have become very crucial in this election. Another challenge for Hasina is how to dissuade 79 of her rebel party men — who have filed their nominations as independents — to withdraw from the contest.

The upcoming election will decide whether Bangladeshis will vote Hasina to power for the third consecutive term to keep the country on course for some measure of development, or opt for “paribartan’’ (change) by voting the BNP-Jamaat-JOF alliance to power.

281 out of 350 seats a massive expected landslide. However there are reports of largescale rigging
which may tarnish to an extent the extent of the win. However, BDesh has economically prospered during Hasina's term.Several years ago before anyone was talking about it, a sr.exec. of a top MNC told me that BD was the next big thing in S.Asia and his co. was going to
make major investments in it. This vote will give hopefully another period of stability to BD which will augur well for India.

The punishing of collaborators and war criminals of '71 and improved relations with India has also been major reasons why Hasina has swept the polls.Justice was delayed but not denied. The pro- Paki BNP has come a cropper because everyone can see what a basket- case beggar Pak has become; mortgaged to the Chins and Saudi despots, grovelling before the IMF trousers dropped, begging to be rogered for a few scraps from its table! BD by contrast, though poor is making an effort to improve itself keeping out Islamic extremists at bay.

Hasina's main task is to find and nurture a set of younger leaders of her party who think and act on similar lines, pro- India essential, who will lead her party in the future.

We should not let this chance go. Next 5 years, strategy plan should be to establish a moderate to big operation base in BD, preferably in northern areas to open up alternate route to reinforce the chicken neck. That base could also be used for intelligence gathering and CT missions. It is getting imperative for us. Hasina has already started appeasing the hardliners and if we do not contain that, it will come to bite us.

Glad she's still PM however some of the election results would make even a Bashar al-Assad or a Saddam Hussain blush.

Bangladesh has done very well economically in the last decade and there isn't really a credible opposition - had Hasina and her party fought the elections fairly they would have probably won anyway.

However, the way she's done it may well come back to bite her in the ass soon - autocratic leaders can only last for so long before the people get fed up.

All of them know that unlike the hans, the Hindus are gullible and have been for centuries.

Since they are transnational in their approach, we should avoid an overly romanticized approach and adopt a more realistic and pragmatic one. We cannot match the hans in the financial strength and their ability to out spend us at every turn

The Hans by nature will not give free money or even money on concessional terms. India has a more nuanced approach offering money on easy terms and also in helping to build indigenous capability. My post was in context of rabid India haters and ISI/Chini collaborators like Khaleda Zia, Rajapaksa, Yameen and Oli. The other options compared to these a s s h o l e s are much better and what Modi has done in the last 5 years needs to be continued.

India-Japan to develop a port in Bangladesh for alternative to the Siliguri route.

Ties between India and Bangladesh will be further strengthened with the ruling Bangladesh Awami League's landslid victory in the general elections of the country. With prime minister Sheikh Hasina continuing to be at the helm for next five years, not only the volume of the financial aid given to Bangladesh by India will increase but Bangladesh will also be benefited with the infrastructure development that India is doing with the help of Japan in Indian Ocean.

Sources said that talks among India, Japan and Bangladesh to built a huge port in the deep sea near Payra in South Bangladesh have reached to advance stage and this could be announced anytime this year. India is focusing to develop a port in Bangladesh after helping the country in many industrial projects. The Sheikh Hasina government continuing in the power will help the government in India. The biggest reason for developing this port is that India does not want to rely only on the Siliguri route for supply of good from the northeastern regions of the country.

The most important reason being for such decision is India's recent dispute with China over Doklam as China will be able to keep a watch on Siliguri route from there. Second reason is that China is also constantly putting pressure on the Sheikh Hasina government to give contract to it to built a port in Bangladesh. But the most important aspect of Payra port is that it is very close to Indian sea territory and it is is the best possible route to link with the rest of the northeastern region.

If everything goes the right way, Payra port will be built by India and Japan under Asia Africa Growth Corridor (AAGC) scheme, which was announced around two years ago by the two countries. AAGC is considered to be the answer to the ambitious One Road, One Belt (OROB) plan of China. India is also planning to built a big road project in Bangladesh with the help of China.

India is also planning to built a big power plant. India supplies 1160 megawatt power to Bangladesh which is over 10 per cent to the total consumption of power of the country. Laying pipeline for diesel from India to Bangladesh is in progress which will be completed in 2020. This pipeline will help supplying other products. There are three railway network in Bangladesh on which India is working

Seen from India, the way the election has played out is hugely disappointing. For one, Bangladesh has long been held up here as something of a role model in terms of governance: a country that has, unlike India, developed a thriving export sector; a country that, in spite of being resource-poor, has managed to empower its people and especially its women; a country in which the government machinery has displayed a certain humility and pragmatism when it comes to trying and testing various grassroots development solutions.
Can anybody explain what the cretin is talking about? What particular combination of mental subjugation and for how long does one have to endure, that bad mouthing your own country in every forum, even tangentially related ones becomes respectable?

for a country being extolled for its prowess in "governance," it is indeed surprising to see just how many beedis are rushing to India to "Seen from India" the view of their wonderful own pissant country, where they continue their savage butchering of bengali Hindus in this day and age, and then illegally migrating in droves to that very hated and detested Hindu country.

good going for them.

the author is smoking some really special stuff.

mihir sharma is of a minority which is religiously inspired to pull India down at every opportunity given him. As always, these rabid people masquerade under Hindu names.

his writings should be dismissed as the deranged ramblings of an unhinged mind belonging to an unemployed drain inspector.

who in India thinks highly of the beedis??, if any think of them at all??.

Bangladeshi and Chinese workers in deadly clash
Police in Bangladesh have broken up a fight between hundreds of Chinese and Bangladeshi workers at the site of a partly-built China-funded power plant.

One Chinese worker was killed in the fighting in the southern district of Patuakhali, police told the BBC.

Violence erupted after a Bangladeshi worker fell to his death, and local workers reportedly accused the Chinese of trying to cover up the incident.

Police said more than 1,000 officers were needed to restore calm.

It has upgraded Chittagong port and is building an industrial park there. It is also constructing road and railway lines linking this Bay of Bengal port to Kunming in China’s Yunnan province. China has also built eight friendship bridges in Bangladesh, including the $3.7 billion road and rail bridge across the Padma River. Additionally, China is investing in a $1 billion project to improve digital connectivity. And China is investing heavily in Bangladesh’s power sector. Indeed, most of its investment in the 2018-19 fiscal year went into Bangladesh’s energy sector, particularly to coal-fired power plants, including those being constructed at Chittagong and Payra.
Importantly, Bangladesh has turned down projects that are not economically viable. This was the case with the Sonadia deep-sea port project, which the Chinese had proposed. Preferring the Japan-proposed deep-sea port project at Matarbari, and recognizing that two deep-sea ports in such close proximity didn’t make economic sense — Sonadia and Matarbari are just 25 kilometers apart — Bangladesh called off the Chinese project at Sonadia.

India's radars in Bangladesh to monitor Bay of Bengal
The new network of Coastal Surveillance Radar Systems in Bangladesh will help India not only to detect any seaborne terrorist attack along its eastern coastline, but also to keep watch on its maritime neighbourhood, where the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) has been frequently deploying its warships over the past few years.
India is building similar coastal surveillance networks in other Indian Ocean nations, like Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Seychelles and Maldives.

The meeting between Modi and Hasina was followed by signing of six other pacts, including one on Standard Operating Procedure for India to use of Chittagong and Mongla ports of Bangladesh, for movement of goods to and from eastern and northeastern regions of India.
They agreed to make efforts to expeditiously implement the proposed Bangladesh-Bhutan-India-Nepal (BBIN) Motor Vehicles Agreement, which was signed on June 15, 2015, but has not yet been put into force as the National Council of Bhutan blocked its ratification. Modi and Hasina on Saturday agreed to work towards a bilateral India-Bangladesh Motor Vehicles Agreement, if no headway could be made to implement the four-nation pact soon.
They agreed to expedite work towards drawing upon a US $ 500 million Line of Credit extended by India to Bangladesh to augment the defence capabilities of the neighbouring country. The implementation arrangements for the credit line was finalized in April 2019.
Modi and Hasina launched a project to import LPG from Bangladesh for distribution in Tripura and rest of northeastern India, inaugurated a hostel – Vivekananda Bhaban – at Ramakrishna Mission in Dhaka and unveiled a skill development institute at Khulna in Bangladesh.
The professed objective of the radar systems India would set up in Bangladesh is to help the neighbouring country safeguard its sovereignty in its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Sources, however, told the DH that the network would also prove to be a strategic asset for India and help Indian Navy to detect and respond to any threat to its national security and sovereignty.

Bangladeshi Opposition BNP party demands cancellation of pacts signed with India
Accusing the Bangladesh government of violating the Constitution by signing "anti-state" bilateral documents with India, the Opposition party, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Sunday demanded the annulment of the deals Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina signed on Saturday.
"We strongly denounce and protest the anti-sate deals, including the withdrawal of water from the Feni River by India. We demand the immediate cancellation of those documents," he said.

The BNP leader further said, "We want to say the signing of bilateral documents, allowing India to use Chattogram and Mongla ports, withdraw water from the Feni River, import bulk LPG from Bangladesh for its north-eastern states is a clear violation of the Constitution. It's also tantamount to treason."

Rizvi said Sheikh Hasina has lost all the constitutional rights to remain in the post of the prime minister by signing the documents with India as she only protected the interests of the neighboring country.

We will not. Not everyone is friendly with India. And there will always be local level provocation. By reacting to it we put at risk the bigger picture.

If we were so easy to distract then deep enemies would distract us every time

Not sure what kind of chanakyan statement you are making, bd awam is anti india and anti hindu. Just because present leader appears friendly to India doesn't mean we can turn blind eye to killing of our security forces.

Just because they are anti does not mean that given a chance we cannot at least make them indifferent. Leave that alone. For three moment we are getting a better deal from Hasina. Let's fix our eyes on that. Not get bothered easily.

Look I am from Calcutta. More then that I have lived in BD a significant Amit l amount of time and still have contacts. The feedback that I am getting- This government has more than made up for all the follies of the past. We ate on a much stronger wicket than before.

As long as they see that they gain from us, they may not like us but will not want to endanger the relationship. Don't let actions of fringe elements derail our gains.

Trust me when dealing with BD there's a iron hand hidden inside the velvet glove

we should not be fooled just because present leader appears friendly to India. This is plain taqiya and nothing else. The beedis have always hated India and that's perfectly OK because they are more of a nuisance than anything else but when they cross the Indian border, it becomes a huge national security issue as well as an economic problem for us.

what is not ok is sneaking into India, taking Indian jobs, sending Indian money back home by hawala channels and scrounging off the Indian taxpayer's money.

I hope we will respond differently than we did to that horrific event of 2001.

Diplomatese is fine, but sometimes a point needs to be made.

If the BD themselves take action like that should be enough for a start. Other solution can be implemented out of sight once the situation has faded from memory.

For whatever it is worth, the current government is pro-India and has been helpful in many cases. BD is not bakistan where a point needs to be made publicly. There are times when one make headlines and there are times when one shuns headlines. India does not need to look for front page news making action.

Lets see how GOI handles this. I would be ok with a quite and behind the scene settlement of the issue. That of course will look to some as GOI having eaten an insult.
