Bangladesh: Eminent Bangladeshi economist and researcher Dr Abul Barkat has estimated that there will be no Hindus left in the country after three decades. "The rate of exodus over the past 49 years points to that direction," the Dhaka University teacher said in his book "Political economy of reforming agriculture-land-water bodies in Bangladesh" published yesterday. He said that from 1964 to 2013, around 11.3 million Hindus left Bangladesh due to religious persecution and discrimination, which means on an average 632 Hindus left the country each day and 230,612 annually, reports the Dhaka Tribune. From his 30-year-long research, Barkat found that the exodus mostly took place during military governments after independence. Before the Liberation War, the daily rate of migration was 705 while it was 512 during 1971-1981 and 438 during 1981-1991. The number increased to 767 persons each day during 1991-2001 while around 774 persons left the country during 2001-2012, the book says. Another Professor Ajoy Roy said the government grabbed the properties of the Hindus during the Pakistan regime describing them as enemy property and the same properties were taken by the government after independence as vested property. According to the book, these two measures made 60 percent of the Hindus landless.

Bangladesh: Hindu temple vandalised, 7 idols smashed in fresh attacks on minority institutions
Dhaka: A Hindu temple was vandalised and seven idols of goddess Kali were on Sunday destroyed by some miscreants in two separate incidents in Bangladesh, weeks after over 10 temples of the minority community were attacked in the Muslim-majority nation.
The first incident came to light after people of Mymensinghorohi village in Netrokona district found the doors of a temple open this morning.
Upon entering its premises, they noticed the temple was vandalised. Four broken idols of goddess Kali were also found lying close to the temple, a senior police officer told PTI.
Immediately, police launched an investigation. "We have collected evidence of the vandalism and started a probe. It was learnt that the temple's doors were not locked. We are looking for those behind this heinous act," Netrokona sadar police Officer-in-Charge Shahnur-e-Alam said.
Netrokona Additional District Magistrate Abdul Matin said those responsible will be punished. "We are treating the case with priority. A group with vested interests may have carried out the crime to disrupt communal harmony," Netrokona Superintendent of Police Joydeb Chowdhury.

A lawmaker from Bangla desh's ruling party has been shot dead by masked men in northern Bangladesh, police said Sunday.

Manzurul Islam Liton, a national legislator from PM Sheikh Hasina's Awami League party, was shot at his home in Gaibandha district on Saturday evening, said local police chief Atiar Rahman.

Family members told police that four masked men arrived on motorcycles, entered the house and shot Liton at close range before running away , Rahman said.

Dhaka cafe attack mastermind killed in police shootout

The mastermind behind the heinous attack on a cafe in Bangladesh capital Dhaka last July was killed in a shootout during a pre-dawn raid, police said Friday. 22 people, including an Indian, were killed in the attack on the intervening night of July 1-2 last year. Although the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, Bangladesh Home Minister said the attack was the handiwork of the Jamaat ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh.

Neo-Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen’s wanted leader Nurul Islam alias Marjan and another unidentified extremist were killed by Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit in Mohammadpur Beribadh area of Dhaka, PTI reported. Police told the news agency that Marjan coordinated the July 1 attack. Dhaka Tribune had reported that Marjan was the youngest commander of neo-JMB, a new faction of the group attached with ISIS.

The attack was termed the worst terrorist act in Bangladesh’s history.

Jan 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have discussed signing a free trade agreement between the two countries when the new Bangladesh High Commissioner Riaz Hamidullah called on Sri Lanka's Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake at the Finance Ministry on Friday.

The discussion was centered on the benefits to be tapped by both countries from a regional trade agreement.

Bilateral trade between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka was only $76 million in 2015-16, of which Bangladesh's import was $45.55 million and Sri Lanka's $30.45 million. Sri Lanka's exports to Bangladesh have seen a steady increase in the past five years.

During the discussion it was noted that the implementation of the proposed trade agreement would be easier due to the close geographical locations of the two countries in the Asian region. Accelerating naval links between Chittagong of Bangladesh and Colombo would also help implement this agreement successfully, the state newspaper Daily News reported.

Strategies to minimize the impact on the economies of the two countries due to looming economic depressions were also discussed during the meeting.

Meanwhile the Bangladesh High Commissioner has said that Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, as leading apparel manufacturers could be able to work together to further expand their exports to new foreign markets.

A container ship "Sonar Tori Nou Kallyan" from Kolkata port arrived on Friday at the Pangaon Inland Container Terminal in Keraniganj.

"Container services have been formally introduced between Bangladesh and India through arrival of the container ship Sonar Tori Nou Kallyan at the Pangaon terminal," shipping minister Shajahan Khan told a function at the Pangaon terminal, an official release said today.

Commerce minister Tofail Ahmed, state minister for power, energy and mineral resources Nasrul Hamid, secretary of shipping ministry Ashoke Madhab Roy, Indian high commissioner in Dhaka Harsh Vardhan Shringla and president of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry Abdul Matlub, among others, were present on the occasion.

One of the main suspects in Dhaka's Gulshan cafe terror attacks last year has been arrested from Kolkata.Idris Ali, one of the main links in the terror attack in Dhaka, was arrested from Burrabazar area of the city by Kolkata Police's special task force which acted on a tip-off from Delhi's special cell.
Ali, who was operating with a fake identity in Kolkata, had sneaked into the Indian territory with the advantage of his language and cultural similarities in this region and Bangladesh.

A Sufi spiritual leader and his daughter were brutally murdered by unidentified attackers in Bangladesh, amid a series of systematic assaults targeting minorities, Sufis and bloggers in the Muslim-majority nation. Farhad Hossain Chowdhury, 55, and his adopted daughter Rupali Begum were found murdered last night in a Khanqah — a building designed specifically for gatherings of a Sufi brotherhood — close to the man’s home in Dinajpur’s Bochaganj upazila, about 350 kilometres north of Dhaka, police said.

Literally few km's from West Bengal's Uttar and Dakshin Dinajpur districts. I wish Indian newspapers would report these Bangladesh matters in terms of proximity to Indian territory instead of distance from Dhaka.

The Bangladesh government is set to reopen the disused and defunct transborder rail routes to India, Nepal and Bhutan in a major boost to cross-border trade and tourism.

The restoration of two of the planned routes has already been completed in time for their inauguration during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s four-day official visit to India, which begins on Friday.

The routes connecting Bangladesh with Nepal and Bhutan are also part of the proposed Trans-Asian Railway network.

“We believe that if the old rail connectivity can be restored and reopened, including the sealed rail links, we will gain a lot more in trade, business and tourism,” Railway Minister Mujibul Huq told the Dhaka Tribune.

The rail links that will be restored pass through the crossing points on the Bangladesh-India border: Chilahati to Haldibari, Biral to Radhikapur, Benapole to Petrapole, Rohanpur to Singhabad, Shahbazpur to Mahisasan, and Burimari to Changrabandha.

Of them, the Benapole-Petrapole and Biral-Radhikapur corridors will be inaugurated during the prime minister’s India visit.

Bangladesh already operates one transborder train service with India, linking Dhaka to Kolkata in West Bengal. The “Maitree Express” was relaunched in 2008 after a 43-year hiatus and now runs three times a week in each direction through the Darsana-Gede interchange point.

India plans high speed diesel pipeline to Bangladesh

India plans to build a pipeline to carry high-speed diesel (HSD) to Bangladesh, similar to a project it announced last week to supply fuel to Nepal.

The cross-border pipeline will run from Siliguri in West Bengal to Parbatipur in northern Bangladesh.

Until the project is completed, HSD will be transported from Assam’s Numaligarh Refinery to Bangladesh via rail and one such consignment will be flagged off by the two prime ministers.

In fact, supplies to Bangladesh has already begun from Numaligarh Refinery. Recently, it dispatched the first consignment of HSD to Bangladesh - a railway rake containing 2,281 metric tonnes of the fuel chugged off from the refiner’s marketing terminal at Siliguri to the Parbitipur depot of Bangladesh Petroleum Corp (BPC). Each such consignment will travel some 516 kms - 253 km in India and 263 km in Bangladesh - on an existing rail line.

Numaligarh Refinery and BPC have signed a sale-purchase agreement which includes a joint initiative for the construction of a 131-km pipeline, with a capacity to carry 1 million metric tonnes a year of fuel products, to Parbatipur from Siliguri.

Peoples Republic of China trying to con Bangladesh by jacking up interest rate on financing of tied aid projects.

China has asked Bangladesh to convert part of the credit it promised during its president’s Dhaka visit to commercial loans.

Converting soft loans into commercial credit means Bangladesh will have to pay higher interest for the fund.

Bangladesh signed $25 billion deals with China for nearly two and a half dozen projects during President Xi Jinping’s visit to Dhaka in October last year.

Why India is dredging rivers in Bangladesh.

If the two neighbours have their way, by mid-2020 India will cease to depend only on the Chicken’s Neck, the 22-km corridor near Siliguri in West Bengal that connects the Northeast with the rest of the country. Once the dredging in Bangladesh is complete, large vessels can move from Varanasi in National Waterway 1 (NW-1, the Ganga) to NW-2 (Brahmaputra) and NW-16 (Barak) via Bangladesh river channels, thereby reducing the over-dependence on the narrow stretch.

“Dredging in Bangladesh will help reducing congestion in the Northeast,” said Nitin Gadkari, minister of road transport, highways and shipping in a detailed written reply to ET Magazine’s questions on the rationale behind India’s largesse to dredge channels in Bangladesh. The minister may not be mandated to talk in detail about the strategic importance of the alternative route, but India’s quest to build an alternative route, that too expeditiously, is only logical considering the recent Chinese military buildup at Doklam, to the north of the strategically-vulnerable Chicken’s Neck, on the pretext of expanding its road connectivity.

India, Russia and Maldives are ready to help Bangladesh eliminate tuberculosis (TB) by 2030, said Minister for Health and Family Welfare Mohammed Nasim, who is now staying in Russia to attend an international conference titled ‘Ending Tuberculosis in Sustainable Development Era: A Multi-Sectoral Approach,’ said a press release issued by the ministry on Thursday.

Indian health minister Jagat Prakash Nadda, Maldives health minister Abdullah Nazim Ibrahim and Russian deputy health minister Tatiana Yakovoleva expressed their support to Bangladesh during a meeting with the health minister at the World Trade Centre in Russia.

Construction of Bangladesh's first nuclear power reactor, Rooppur 1, has officially begun with the pouring of the first concrete for the VVER-1200 reactor's basemat. Work on the Russian-designed and supplied plant was ceremonially started by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

India is close to sign its tripartite Inter Governmental Agreement (IGA) involving Russia and Bangladesh for Rooppur Nuclear Power plant near Dhaka — Delhi’s first such civil nuclear document!

Bangladesh ranked at 111, well ahead of the Mohammadden Terrorism Fomenting Islamic Republic of Pakistan rank of 137, in the 149 country/admin territory Legatum Prosperity Index 2017.

Almost zero insurgent camps on Bangladeshi soil, says BSF chief

Border Security Force (BSF) chief K K Sharma has claimed that camps and hideouts of Indian insurgent groups on Bangladeshi soil have been reduced to almost zero because of the excellent cooperation between BSF and Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) over the past few years.
"Whenever we have information about exodus of insurgents of north-eastern states in Bangladesh, we share the information and immediate raids are undertaken by the BGB. As a result, the number of training places and hideouts of these insurgents have been reduced to almost zero," Sharma told PTI.

If some camps did exist still, they were of a floating nature, Sharma claimed.

The Bangladesh Air Force has finalised the procurement of armed unmanned aerial systems with the tender to be opened on 12 February 2018 after it was rescheduled for undisclosed reasons.

The concerned authorities shortlisted the Chinese CH-5B and Wing Loong II

2. Supposedly a squadron of J-10C and 23 K-8W were signed for in a deal last year. New K-8s were spotted at Jessore as proof of deal. Also BAF pilots reported training in Cheen.

3. Rumored heavy fighter squadron being bought for Cox’ Bazar. Buzz is that these will be Su-30SMEs.

Can they afford all this? Probably not but they are being pushed by Myanmar getting new Su-30s and JF-17s.
