the new york times carries an informative discussion on the utility of a chinese degree
While China's economy keeps growing at a rapid pace, the dim employment prospects of many of its college graduates pose a potential economic problem.

According to recent statistics, the average Chinese college graduate makes only 300 yuan, or about $44, more a month than the average Chinese migrant worker. In recent years, the wages of college graduates have remained steady at about 1,500 yuan a month. Migrant workers' wages, however, have risen to 1,200 yuan.

Ms. Nirupama Rao on India-PRC relationship
Excerpts
. . . As our Prime Minister has said, India and China will continue to grow, simultaneously, and our policies will have to cater to this emerging reality. . . I believe that neither of us has the luxury of seeing each other in antagonistic terms. The view that India and China are rivals is an over-generalisation and over-simplification of a complex relationship which encompasses so many diverse issues.
It is true that divergences persist. We have a disputed border. There are legacies as well as lessons bequeathed to us by history. This is a complex problem and the cartographies that define national identity are internalised in the minds of people in both countries.
Another issue of concern is the management of trans-border rivers. Many of the rivers nourishing the plains of Northern India and also areas in North-east India arise in the highlands of the Tibetan Autonomous Region and are a source of livelihood and sustenance for millions of our people. We are alert to reports of China damming trans-border rivers and have sought assurances from China that it will take no action to negatively affect the flow of the rivers into India, so that our rights as the lower riparian are not adversely affected. China has assured us that the projects on the Bramhaputra are run-of-the-river projects and are not meant for storing or diverting water. We look forward to working closely with China in this critical area of environmental and livelihood security.

There is, then, the question of the China-Pakistan relationship. India firmly believes that a stable and prosperous Pakistan is in India's interest, and we are not against Pakistan's relations with other countries. While I agree that relationships between countries are not zero-sum games, we do not hesitate to stress our genuine concerns regarding some aspects of the China-Pakistan relationship particularly when it comes to China's role in PoK, China's J&K policy and the Sino-Pak security and nuclear relationship. The need for mutual sensitivity to each other's concerns cannot be denied. The issue of giving stapled visas to Indian nationals from the state of Jammu and Kashmir arises in a similar context. We believe that the India-China relationship will grow even stronger as China shows more sensitivity on core issues that impinge on our sovereignty and territorial integrity. We hope this can be realised.
There is also serious discussion between the two countries on correcting the trade imbalance and we would like to see more Indian goods and services entering the Chinese market. . . We also expect similar access to Chinese markets especially in the area of pharmaceuticals, IT, engineering goods, where our companies have often faced non-tariff and opaque barriers
We hope such cooperation will also be strengthened on the important issue of UN Reform and that we will be able to build common ground on the issue relating to the expansion of the Security Council and India's interest in permanent membership.
As our interests get progressively more complex, the costs of any withdrawal from engagement will rise. I believe this is a big relationship with the clear possibility of an ambitious agenda of mutual engagement that will be one of the most important bilateral equations of our new century. It is in our interest to view it in a more wide-angled and high definition manner than ever before.

WikiLeaks: Hillary Clinton's question: how can we stand up to Beijing?Australia's ex-PM Kevin Rudd advised US secretary of state to welcome Beijing onto world stage but keep force as a last resort
According to the note of Clinton's lunch with Rudd in Washington: "The secretary affirmed the US desire for a successful China, with a rising standard of living and improving democracy at a pace Chinese leaders could tolerate… The secretary also noted the challenges posed by China's economic rise, asking: 'How do you deal toughly with your banker?'"Rudd responded by calling himself "a brutal realist on China", arguing for a policy of "integrating China effectively into the international community and allowing it to demonstrate greater responsibility, all while also preparing to deploy force if everything goes wrong". He described Chinese leaders as "subrational and deeply emotional" on Taiwan, a frequent source of tension with the US.In the January memo, Jon Huntsman, the US ambassador to China, argued: "Whereas 2009 was a year to build the US-China relationship, 2010 will be a year that tests it.

A Chinese politician became hostile to Google after he searched his own name and found articles criticising him
Classified information sent by US diplomats to the State Department in Washington and published on WikiLeaks, claims that the Chinese politician became hostile to Google after he searched his own name and found articles criticising him. This apparently prompted an assault on the search engine, forcing it to "walk away from a potential market of 400 million internet users" in January this year, amid a highly publicised row about internet censorship. The allegation that the attack on Google was orchestrated by Communist party leaders has not been revealed until now. The politician is accused of acting with a second member of the politburo in an attempt to force Google to drop a link from its Chinese-language search engine to its uncensored google.com version. One cable from the US embassy in Beijing, marked as secret, records that attempts to break into the accounts of dissidents who used Google's Gmail system had been co-ordinated "with the oversight of" the two politburo members.

China Clones, Sells Russian Fighter Jets
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142 ... 98844.html
This epochal turnaround was palpable in the Russian pavilion at November's Airshow China in the southern city of Zhuhai. Russia used to be the star of this show, wowing visitors with its "Russian Knights" aerobatic team, showing off fighters, helicopters and cargo planes, and sealing multibillion dollar deals on the sidelines. This year, it didn't bring a single real aircraft—only a handful of plastic miniatures, tended by a few dozen bored sales staff. China, by contrast, laid on its biggest commercial display of military technology—almost all based on Russian know-how. The star guests were the "Sherdils," a Pakistani aerobatic team flying fighter jets that are Russian in origin but are now being produced by Pakistan and China. We didn't pay enough attention to our intellectual property in the past," said a Russian defense official. "Now China is even competing with us on the international market."
• Few things illustrate this more clearly than the J-11B, a Chinese fighter that Russian officials allege is a direct copy of the Su-27, a one-seat fighter that was developed by the Soviets through the 1970s and 1980s as a match for the U.S. F-15 and F-16.The J-11B looked almost identical to the Su-27, but China said it was 90% indigenous and included more advanced Chinese avionics and radars. Only the engine was still Russian, China said. Now it is being fitted with a Chinese engine as well, according to Zhang Xinguo, deputy president of AVIC, which includes Shenyang Aircraft. "You cannot say it's just a copy," he said. "Mobile phones all look similar. But technology is developing very quickly. Even if it looks the same, everything inside cannot be the same."The J-11B presented Russia with a stark choice—to continue selling China weapons, and risk having them cloned, too, or to stop, and miss out on its still lucrative market.

China and 18 other countries have declined to attend this year's Nobel Peace Prize ceremony honoring imprisoned Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo, Nobel officials said Tuesday as China unleashed a new barrage deriding the decision.

Chinese officials in Beijing called Liu's backers "clowns" in an anti-Chinese farce — comments that came only three days before the Dec. 10 Nobel peace prize ceremony in Oslo.

Beijing considers Liu's recognition an attack on China's political and legal system, and says the country's policies will not be swayed by outside forces in what it calls "flagrant interference in China's sovereignty."
<snip>
Nobel committee secretary Geir Lundestad said countries gave various reasons for not attending but "some of them are obviously affected by China." He said the committee was pleased that two-thirds of embassies had resisted Chinese pressure and accepted the invitation.

"We are especially happy that important countries like India, Indonesia, Brazil and South Africa are coming," Lundestad said.

If that was not enough, he has now been refused an exit from China for

Indian ambassador to attend Nobel Peace Prize ceremony
The Indian Ambassador to Norway will attend the ceremony of awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo on Friday, according to the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

“The Indian ambassador will be at the ceremony,” committee secretary Torill Johansen told The Hindu on Tuesday over telephone from Oslo. Last week Indian officials said they were yet to take a call on a Chinese demarche asking all countries to boycott the ceremony, citing the scheduled arrival of Premier Wen Jiabao in New Delhi on December 15 as a complicating factor.
...
The Nobel committee said that as of Monday, 19 countries had declined invitations to the ceremony. They are China, Pakistan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Colombia, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Iraq, Iran, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Venezuela, the Philippines, Egypt, Sudan, Ukraine, Cuba and Morocco.

Sri Lanka and Algeria did not reply to invitations. Ms. Johansen said the Indian, South Korean and Japanese embassies were among the 44 which had indicated they would be represented at the ceremony. The Nobel committee had been told on Tuesday that Indian Ambassador to Norway Banbit Roy would attend Friday's ceremony. Not all of the 44 representatives, she said, are ambassadors, with some countries sending lower level envoys; but India's is.

As is the practice, 65 embassies based in Norway were invited.

Was listening to NDTV reporter's take on the issue of India attending the Nobel ceremony. She said that it was still not certain whether India would attend or not because the letter promising to attend, that the Nobel Committee had released, was written before China asked India not to attend. She then went on to say that because of the sensitivity of Wen's visit next week, India might decide to withdraw in the last minute etc. She said it was from sources in the MEA.

Now, if she turns out to be right, it would be a most unfortunate display of spinelessness. If it turns out to be false, it could well be an attempt by the channel to put a spin on events.

New initiatives to mark 60 years of India-China diplomatic relationship
Dana Schuppert, an expert on India-China relations, has called for the setting up of Chinese cultural centres in Chennai, Bangalore and New Delhi and Indian cultural centres in Beijing and Kunming to mark the 60th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

“There are no differences between India and China that cannot be overcome with good will, sincere, mutual understanding and joint effort,” she told TheHindu on Monday.

“We should not look at the differences, but at the combined strength of the two neighbours. We have to combine our strengths to meet the challenges on a global scale,” Dr. Schuppert said.

There should be cooperation and exchanges in the fields of information technology, culture, education, health care, pharmaceutical, hospitality and medical sectors and engineering, she said.

Dr. Schuppert, who is the founder and executive chairman of 21st Century China-India Centre for Culture and Communication, will explore the possibility of a tie-up up with the media for setting up a 21st Century China-India Round Table, CEO Forum and to initiate exchange programmes.

She said that the Round Table was essential to enable businessmen to understand the perception of India, while the cultural centres were important to learn the languages, respect the cultural diversity and business culture of the two countries.

“We would like to conduct CEO forum in India and China in alternate years with about 10 CEOs each from both nations. It would take up for discussion important issues such as education, energy saving and communication. Language is the key to culture. Communication and culture are the keys to success.

“Unless we understand each other's culture, we cannot do business and work in a successful way,” Dr. Schuppert said.

In India, people have started to learn Mandarin and Hindi will have to be taught in China.

“We can also teach Chinese calligraphy and brush painting in India since there is a great interest in these areas,” she said.

The visit of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao to India in the third week of December will deepen the understanding, enhance trade and further widen communications, she said.

After the successful visits of External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna and President Pratibha Patel to China, Mr. Wen's visit will indeed be of very special importance, she added said.
So, who is this Dana Schuppert ? From here,
She is a Buddhist monk who is passionate about two things — India and China. She is also a behan , who is trying to rekindle the Nehruvian-era message: "India Chini bhai bhai ."
Dr Dana Schuppert, chairman and chief executive officer, Sino-European Investment Management Limited, is a "cultural ambassador" who is on an eternal journey to bring the two neighbouring countries closer again.

Dana, an European with French and German parents and whose name finds root in Sanskrit, says she lives by her name, which means "the joy of giving or accompanying other people in their spiritual journey"

There is no differentiating the varied aspects that make up Dana -- ballet dancer, Buddhist, adviser to the People's Daily, the most powerful Chinese government mouthpiece, publisher of seven books, PhD in Human and Economic Sciences, financial expert and a "cosmically empowered" diplomat.

Dana, who is to initiate an exchange of delegations between the two countries, has a strong message; "Those who can see further have the obligation and the responsibility to do more, for the benefit of others." And she is the common factor between India and China.

China to award Piss (I mean Peace) Prize to rival Nobel

I would like to propose to the great Chinese Communist Party to award the prize to Suzzane Arundhati Roy who is a mobile republic on her own (admission). That would teach these bloody Injuns to honor the clown Liu Xiaobo by attending the prize distribution ceremony which the revisionist Norwegian government is determined to hold. Besides it would fulfill a long time desire of Suzzie baby for a prize - and it has been quite a long time since she won a prize, more than a decade, despite tirelessly regurgitating her verbal diarrhea.

Meanwhile, Suzzane should gang up with her old friends the Maoists and the Kashmiri Rats to protest India's decision to attend the Oslo ceremony.

Interesting would be if Sri Lanka's Ambassador to Norway attends the Nobel Peace Prize Awarding Ceremony or not! It would give us a lot of idea in which way the wind is blowing!

China's alternate reality - when China doesn't like reality it constructs an alternate one. Sometimes it is benign; sometimes it is within its rights - but sometimes it is outright dangerous.

THis is exactly India should be doing for itself.
Some of this is simply smart politics. Chinese leaders don’t believe that the international press gives them a fair shake, so they invest $80 billion to create their own international media outreach with access to 130 news bureaus worldwide and a 24-hour English-language television station. Nothing wrong with this—everyone is free to decide what they do and don’t believe from any media source.

China cracks down on foreign travel before Nobel ceremony
People even suspected of being potential Oslo attendees – whether or not they are on the list of the 144 people invited by Liu Xia – have been restricted from traveling outside of the country...
Essentially an indication of extreme insecurity within the CCP. In contrast, India was confident enough to shrug off and ignore shrill loudmouths who do and say much worse. I wonder if Jiabao will cxl his trip?
