EU leaders approve sanctions on Turkish officials over gas drilling
Bloc defers decision on trade tariffs and arms until consultation with Biden administration
Patrick Wintour Diplomatic editor, Fri 11 Dec 2020.

EU leaders have agreed to impose sanctions on an unspecified number of Turkish officials and entities involved in gas drilling in Cypriot-claimed waters – but they deferred bigger decisions such as trade tariffs or an arms embargo until they have consulted with the upcoming Biden administration.
The decision reached by the EU council after hours of heated debate disappointed hardliners such as France, Cyprus and Greece, which had pressed for more urgent and substantive action to express EU disapproval of Turkish foreign policy.
Erdoğan met by protests from Turkish Cypriots during visit
Nevertheless, the Turkish ministry of foreign affairs responded: “We reject the biased and unlawful attitude which had to be inserted into the 10 December EU summit conclusions after the pressure of solidarity and veto.”

Exclusive: U.S. set to sanction Turkey over Russian defense system - sources
By Humeyra Pamuk, Phil Stewart, December 10, 2020

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States is poised to impose sanctions on Turkey over its acquisition last year of Russian S-400 air defense systems, five sources including three U.S. officials told Reuters on Thursday, a move likely to worsen already problematic ties between the two NATO allies.
The long-anticipated step, which is likely to infuriate Ankara and weigh on Turkey’s relations with the incoming administration of President-elect Joe Biden, is expected to be announced as early as Friday, sources have said.
The sanctions would target Turkey’s Presidency of Defence Industries and its head, Ismail Demir, sources have said. They would be damaging but narrower than the severe scenarios some analysts have outlined.
Two sources familiar with the matter, including a U.S. official speaking on the condition of anonymity, said President Donald Trump had given aides the blessing for the sanctions.
The Turkish lira weakened as much as 1.4% following the news. U.S. sanctions could harm a Turkish economy struggling with a coronavirus-induced slowdown, double-digit inflation and badly depleted foreign reserves.
A senior Turkish official said sanctions would backfire and hurt ties between the two NATO members.

Putin bets Turkey will strain EU and NATO relations in his favor
By Henry Meyer, Stepan Kravchenko and Ilya Arkhipov on 12/12/2020

(Bloomberg) --Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was guest of honor at Azerbaijan’s military parade Thursday to mark its victory with Ankara’s help over Moscow ally Armenia. If Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin was angry at the incursion into his former Soviet backyard, he wasn’t showing it.
It was only the latest challenge from the Turkish leader that the normally assertive Putin has tolerated. That’s because, as Erdogan seeks to mend ties with incoming U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration, the Kremlin is confident Turkey will remain a thorn in the side of its fellow NATO members, fueling divisions that Moscow relishes. U.S. plans approved by President Donald Trump, who’s boasted of his warm relations with Erdogan, to sanction Turkey over its purchase of a Russian S-400 missile-defense system will only further complicate the Turkish leader’s efforts to rebuild links with Washington. From Azerbaijan to Syria to Libya, Erdogan’s drive to rebuild Turkey’s influence as a regional power has forced Russia to roll back its ambitions. Even as Erdogan increasingly positions himself as a check on the Kremlin’s geopolitical reach, Putin has nothing but warm words for his Black Sea neighbor in public.
“Relations are very tense right now, there’s competition and even an element of confrontation,” said Andrey Kortunov, head of the Kremlin-founded Russian International Affairs Council. “Still, cooperation with Turkey is so important strategically that Russia’s ready to close its eyes to this.”
NATO Rift
The measured Russian response reflects the desire to nurture ties with Erdogan, who triggered an unprecedented rift within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization with the 2017 deal for the S-400 system. Too many differences remain between Turkey and the U.S. and Europe to prevent friction, and Erdogan won’t stand for others trying to dictate how he behaves, a senior Russian government official told Bloomberg, asking not to be identified discussing policy issues. Russia has experience of managing a volatile economic and political relationship with Turkey, even as Erdogan has sent Turkish forces and proxies to thwart Putin in regional hotspots.
Erdogan watched about 200 of his troops join Azerbaijani forces in the center of the capital, Baku, who paraded Turkish-made drones that were decisive in defeating Armenia during the 44-day war over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh.
He’s effectively stymied a Russian-backed effort to wipe out the last rebel-held redoubt in Syria, said three people in Moscow familiar with the situation, after also confronting the Kremlin in Libya.
Ancient Rivalry
Still, the strains between Moscow and Ankara are rekindling centuries of rivalry between the two former imperial powers. In 2015 Russia slapped crushing sanctions on Turkey after it shot down a Russian fighter jet on the border with Syria. On Wednesday, it barred imports of tomatoes from Azerbaijan, the country’s biggest export after oil and gas. The Russian leader has championed a multi-polar world in which regional powers challenge Washington’s traditional leadership, but Erdogan is proving more than a match as they wrestle for influence.
While Ankara has been telling Western partners that its growing footprint in the ex-Soviet arena and the Middle East is a bulwark against an expansionist Russia, that doesn’t mean Turkey’s on the same page with them, said Kortunov. “Under Biden, Erdogan’s problems are likely to mount,” he said.

US sanctions NATO ally Turkey over Russian missile defence
The Trump administration on Monday imposed sanctions on its NATO ally Turkey over its purchase of a Russian air defence system, setting the stage for further confrontation between the two nations as President-elect Joe Biden prepares to take office.

The move comes at a delicate time in relations between Washington and Ankara, which have been at odds for more than a year over Turkey’s acquisition from Russia of the S-400 missile defense system, along with Turkish actions in Syria, the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan and in the eastern Mediterranean.

The US had previously kicked Turkey out of its F-35 stealth fighter development and training program over the purchase, but had taken no further steps despite persistent warnings from American officials who have long complained about the purchase of the S-400, which they say is incompatible with NATO equipment and a potential threat to allied security.

There is more to warming Turkey-Russia relations (and also to US' threatening Erdogan with sanctions) than just S-400.

This article is by a couple of anti-Putin, Bulgarian-American Republicans... but it clearly lays out what the West's real khujli is. The "Turkstream" pipeline that will carry Russian gas via the Black Sea and Turkey into Balkan Europe and beyond.

https://nationalinterest.org/feature/wh ... ime-177070
If you haven’t heard of the Balkan Stream, then chances are you know this pipeline by its proper name, TurkStream, which originates in Russia, runs under the Black Sea, emerges in Turkey and then on to Bulgaria. Renaming the pipeline was a Potemkin effort by Bulgarian prime minister Boyko Borisov to camouflage its connection to the Russian pipe, the inauguration of which would subject Bulgaria to Russian president Vladimir Putin’s whims and isolate my country from the democratic West.

That is because the United States intends to sanction anything that touches TurkStream, and for good reason as the pipeline’s sole mission is to cripple Putin’s enemies and finance his corrupt regime. The fact that TurkStream infrastructure has penetrated Bulgaria is an undeniable victory for the Kremlin—but the victory can be made hollow. In March 2021, the Bulgarians will head to the polls and to avoid future sanctions, reject Putin’s nefarious aims, and stand with our European and U.S. allies, the next governing coalition in Sofia must ensure that the Bulgarian section of TurkStream will never carry Russian gas.

Doing so would bring manifest benefits, with one of the most important being the avoidance of U.S. sanctions. While the penalties would likely be placed on individuals or entities that facilitated TurkStream’s construction, the whole country would suffer. Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made that much clear over the summer when the State Department updated its sanctions guidance to target TurkStream.

“It’s a clear warning to companies aiding and abetting Russia’s malign influence projects will not be tolerated,” Pompeo said in July. “Get out now, or risk the consequences.”

The consequence of being cut off from the world’s largest and most dynamic economy is bad enough, but perhaps equally damaging is the pariah status associated with being on the wrong end of Washington’s Treasury Department. When investors and benefactors think of U.S. sanctions, countries that come to their minds include Belarus, Venezuela and North Korea.

Being in the same league as those countries offers Bulgaria nothing, just like TurkStream. Putin’s pipeline fails to meet even the lowest threshold that should be applied to new energy projects in a country like Bulgaria, which is to diversify energy supply. Currently, more than 75 percent of Bulgaria’s natural gas imports come from Russia, and TurkStream would only deepen that dependence, allowing Putin to cut off Bulgaria’s energy supply at will. As Borisov embraces TurkStream, he apparently is rejecting a pipeline that would connect Bulgaria to a Greek Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) terminal that would allow Bulgaria to more easily access LNG from countries like the United States, which is increasingly shipping gas to Europe.

What makes this frustrating predicament even more troubling is that Borisov has invited this reputational and economic risk with no reward in sight—at least not for the Bulgarian people. The only conclusion one can draw is that Borisov is acting as an accomplice in Putin’s gambit to impoverish his enemies and install a monopoly on European gas supplies. Like some of Putin’s other pipeline projects, TurkStream is notable not for the countries through which it runs, but the one it avoids: Ukraine.

At the moment, Russia relies on much of Ukraine’s existing infrastructure to send its natural gas to European markets. But Putin is also working to destroy Ukraine by illegally occupying its territory and supporting an insurgency in the country. For Putin, the goal of TurkStream is to punish and pauperize Ukraine. The fact that he can spread various pipeline construction contracts to his cronies is simply an added benefit. By inviting TurkStream into Bulgaria, Borisov has fed this rampant corruption while working against the transatlantic goal of strengthening Ukraine and its institutions as Kyiv resists Putin’s conquest.
There is cause for India to be very concerned.

Putin wants to sell gas to EU. Ukraine was an important component of the route for Russian gas pipelines. The 2014-onwards Ukraine civil war, following a Western "colour revolution" and Russia's occupation of Crimea, has destabilized Ukraine so that it is not reliable as a transit territory.

The alternative route for Russia runs through Turkey. Now we can understand why Putin has (a) ignored the Turks shooting down a Russian Su-25 during the Russian military operations in Syria; (b) Made accommodations with Erdogan that sideline Russia's traditional ally in Syria, the Assad Government; (c) Sold S-400 weapon systems to Turkey; (d) Looked the other way as Turkey and Azerbaijan gang-banged Russia's traditional ally, Armenia, a couple of months ago.

Russia, or at least Putin, is working very hard at cultivating a long-term, stable, strategic alliance with Turkey, primarily based on the Turkstream pipeline investment. Turkey, as we know, has decided that hostile confrontation with India (and taking up sponsorship of Pakistan) is in its strategic interest.

This means Russia is allying itself with not just one, but two powers who are independently very anti-India. Not just China, as we have known for a long time, but Turkey as well.

From Greek media

Turkey's SADAT paramilitary mercenaries preparing to attack India's Kashmir
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's secret paramilitary group SADAT, led by Adnan Tanrıverdi, has hired Kashmir-born Syed Ghulam Nabi Fai, who is serving a US federal prison sentence for operating to recruit mercenaries against India, the Nordic Monitor reports.

Fai is a member of the American Council of Kashmir (KAC), a showcase organization funded by the Pakistani Secret Service (ISI).

This organization now cooperates with the Turkish SADAT and the NGO Islamic World (lamslam Dünyası Sivil Toplum Kuruluşları Birliği, İDSB).

Fai frequently attended SADAT events and even met in person with Tanrıverdi, a former Turkish military official who continues to advise the Turkish president.

The head of the Turkish paramilitary organization was one of the keynote speakers at the event and met with Faye to discuss joint programs and coordinate actions specifically against Indian Kashmir.

The mercenary paramilitary organization SADAT operates as a training and logistical support center for jihadists in Turkey, Syria, Libya and other countries.

Meanwhile

India keeps watch on Turkey-Pakistan's joint military exercises in FATA bordering Afghanistan
"Pakistan has taken a definitive turn towards Turkey after Saudi Arabia decided to adopt a more pragmatic approach and build its strategic and economic ties with India," one of the above mentioned sources explained. "UAE too has expanded its partnership with India across sectors. Turkey on its part wants to place itself as a leader of Islamic world and its role in recent Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict has buoyed PM Imran Khan and all powerful army to take ties with Ankara to the next level."

Looks like Israeli media is also keeping watch on Turkey-Pakistan ties

From Jerusalem Post

Turkey, Pakistan: Inside the Ankara-Islamabad axis
A joint military exercise involving Turkish and Pakistani Special Forces commenced this week in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, which borders Afghanistan. The exercise, dubbed “Ataturk XI-2021,” is to focus on counter-terrorist operations. It is the latest manifestation of an emergent strategic alliance of these two countries, with significant implications – both for the Middle East, and for South Asia.
Turkey is now Pakistan’s fourth largest source of arms..Pakistan is in the process of purchasing four Turkish-built MILGEM corvette ships from the Turkish state-owned defense contractor ASFAT. It has also placed an order for 30 T-129 ATAK helicopters. The total cost of orders placed by Pakistan for the purchase of Turkish weapons systems is now in excess of $3 billion..
Pakistani senior officials have expressed support for Turkey in its disputes over gas exploration in the Eastern Mediterranean. A series of joint naval exercises in the Mediterranean, involving the navies of both countries and including violations of Cypriot and Greek territorial waters and airspace, took place over the last year. Similar joint exercises have also been held in the Indian Ocean.
In this regard, recent reports in regional media (Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Hawar News) suggesting that Turkey is in the process of deploying its Syrian Islamist client militias in Kashmir have raised concerns, though no concrete evidence for these allegations has yet emerged.
The Strategic partnership between Ankara and Islamabad is also raising concerns in the nuclear realm...Turkey currently possesses two nuclear reactors, Tr-1 and Tr-2, maintained by the Turkish Atomic Energy Authority. The country has rich uranium deposits. It thus possesses both the will and the raw materials to develop a nuclear capacity. It currently lacks only the required knowledge to do so. Pakistan, which is not a signatory to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, possesses this knowledge. While no concrete evidence of active cooperation in this regard has yet emerged, it is worth recalling that Turkey was a covert hub for the activities of the rogue Pakistani nuclear scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan 20 years ago.
Both Turkey and Pakistan are also eager to connect their ambitions to the strategic advance of China. Turkey is of importance to Beijing as a transportation hub on the way to the Mediterranean and to Europe, and as a priority country for investment in infrastructure. Turkey is an observer country at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. It is noteworthy that Erdogan’s efforts to present himself as a leader of the world’s Muslims and of all peoples ethnically associated with the Turks does not extend to solidarity with the Turkic Muslim Uighurs, on whose fate he has been notably silent.

Pakistan’s relations with China are deep and of long standing, related to the joint geopolitical rivalry with India.

Catastrophic intel op. debacle for the Ottomans in Iraq.At least 13 Turkish intel, military and police spooks were executed by the PKK .The Ottoman pretender launched an offensive against the Kurds
which ended in the bayonet being rammed up his nether end!
I suppose the close ties and nocturnal mooching with their Paki bumchums is rubbing off on the Turkish intel and military. The Pakis are past masters at being shafted by Baluchis,Afghanis, Pakhtunis, not to mention the regular hidings that we Yindians administer from time to time to keep them in trim, and fraternising
with the Turks is showing! We trust the Ottomans and the Pakis play to form for a very, very, long time to come!

Toorkie has been positioning itself as as oil/gas aggregator for years. If the outcome in Syria had turned out in favor on other parties (well, they tried hard), the oil/gas pipeline would have been laid from middle yeast countries thru southern Toorkie and then to Europe instead of NS1, NS2, and TurkStream. And, energy would have been priced in $$ instead of €€. Russ is in Syria to eliminate the competition (Eye-ran has enough gas to supply to EU for decades). Europeans want to pay for energy using their own currency (Euro). By aligning with Toorkie, Russ has created more problems for Toorkie by setting it up against uncle. NS1 and NS2 do not go thru Toorkie. Plus, good old recycling of capital into supporting MIC is in place. Toorkie earns € and it goes in to buying Yes-400 or whatever future gadgets from Russ. I doubt there is anything India can do alter this geopolitical/economic dynamic, other than ensuring the slow roasting of Toorkie. Bakis are as usual are diversifying places they can go to beg. Bakis recognize that large countries who have been caretakers of bak in the past, eventually, will not want to be seen overtly siding with Bakistan and put their commercial interest with India at stake (much bigger market), thus the diversification. Hopefully, India can put the pressure on and reduce places bakis can go for a handout.

So this deal is going through inspite of Turkish interference in Indian internal affairs

Hindustan Shipyard to build 5 naval support vessels with Turkish help
Visakhapatnam-based Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) is expecting an order from the Indian Navy by the year end for building five mammoth naval support vessels with transfer of technology from a Turkish shipbuilding firm, people familiar with the developments said on Monday.

The project, estimated to cost between $1.5 billion and $2 billion, will involve transfer of technology from Anadolu Shipyard, part of the TAIS consortium of Turkey, with which HSL signed an agreement for technical collaboration last year.

HSL is expected to deliver the first fleet support vessel (FSV) to the navy within four years of the go-ahead, with the other ships to be delivered at the rate of one every 10 months to 12 months. The vessels will be 230 metres long and have a displacement of 45,000 tonnes. FSVs carry fuel and other supplies for warships.

“The agreement with the Turkish consortium will kick in after HSL gets an order from the Indian Navy. If all goes well, that could happen by October 2021. Several Indian vendors will also be involved in the project,” said one of the people cited above, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Unlike other massive projects of this type, which usually witness at least one of the vessels being constructed in the country providing the technology and know-how, the Turkish side has decided to go ahead with transfer of technology from the initial stages and back the “Make in India” initiative by constructing all five vessels at HSL, said a second person who too declined to be named.

“Turkey’s shipyards are fully booked for a long time and there is nothing to lose by transferring technology and having all the vessels built in India. Turkish engineers will come to India to assist with the project,” the second person said.

Besides designs, the Turkish consortium will provide engineering services, planning and preparation of specifications, the people said. The transfer of technology will also boost India’s shipbuilding capabilities, they added.

Maritime affairs expert, Rear Admiral (retired) Sudarshan Shrikhande, said: “There is a need for the navy to have fleet support ships. While HSL may have a sort of a collaborative arrangement for transfer of technology and building these in Visakhapatnam, one is not aware if a contract may be in the offing or whether discussions are continuing.”

TAIS, which is a member of Turkey's largest industrial group, and HSL concluded an agreement for cooperation in the first quarter of last year, after the issue had come under a cloud for some time because of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s criticism of the Indian government’s decision to scrap Jammu and Kashmir’s special status in 2019. Questions were also raised in some quarters because of the strong defence ties between Turkey and Pakistan.

The Turkish consortium was the lowest bidder for the contract to make the FSVs. Moreover, some other bidders had insisted that at least one of the vessels should be made in a foreign shipyard. The agreement with TAIS was signed after clearance by the Indian defence ministry, the people cited above said.

Sameer Patil, fellow for international security studies at Gateway House, said both countries were displaying pragmatism against a backdrop of long-standing concerns in India about Turkey’s defence relationship with Pakistan.

“Turkey under President Erdogan has focused on building commercial relations with all countries. This pragmatism is being seen in this effort to collaborate with India despite the proximity with Pakistan. India wants to build its naval capabilities and Turkey has a defence industry that is very advanced,” he said.

“If Turkey is offering transfer of technology, why should we say no?” Patil said, noting that Turkish company Savronik was given sub-contracts for building key parts of the strategic Atal Tunnel under Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh.

Turkey’s nuclear power dilemma
Turkey’s first Russia-backed nuclear plant has raised issues around its safety and potential for use in building nuclear weapons.
By Sinem Koseoglu, 10 Mar 2021

Istanbul, Turkey – Turkish and Russian officials laid the foundation for the third reactor of Turkey’s first nuclear power plant Akkuyu in the southern coastal city of Mersin on Wednesday. The plant’s first reactor unit is expected to be operational in 2023, the centenary of the Turkish Republic, and the remaining units in 2026.
The co-construction of the Akkuyu plant started in April 2018, eight years after the two countries signed an intergovernmental agreement.
The project is owned by the Russian energy company Rosatom while the Turkish Akkuyu is the license owner and the local operator.
Once completed, the plant is expected to produce 35 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually, about 10 percent of Turkey’s total electricity supply. The service life will last 50 years. The facility will launch Turkey into the ”league of nuclear energy countries”, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, hailing it as a “symbol of Turkish-Russian cooperation”. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who spoke at the event via video-conference from Moscow, called it a “truly flagship project”.
Akkuyu is the only nuclear power facility under construction in Turkey but a second project in the Black Sea province of Sinop is expected to kick off this year, reports suggest, if Ankara can find a new partner after Japan’s Mitsubishi pulled out last year. The project was agreed on by the Japanese and Turkish governments in 2013. A consortium led by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries conducted a feasibility study until March for the construction of a 4,500-megawatt plant in Sinop. A senior energy official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Al Jazeera the Turkish government is also considering a third nuclear plant with four reactors in the country’s northwest. Turkey’s ultimate goal is not building a nuclear weapon but diversity in energy resources, he said.
Russian dependency?
Since the Akkuyu project was signed, proponents of nuclear energy in Turkey have argued it would limit Turkey’s dependency on foreign energy suppliers. They also underline it is clean energy. However, some international experts think differently. Henry D Sokolski, executive director of the Nonproliferation Policy Education Center in Washington, DC, said Akkuyu’s financing model could further Ankara’s dependency on Russia, a major energy provider to Turkey. The project is fully financed by Moscow. Sokolski said it is an intensive capital investment and questioned why Turkey frontloads such debt while alternative and cheaper energy resources are coming down the pipeline.

Actually that makes sense., turdogan is determined to get nukes by hook or crook., the nukes can legitimize their hold over the Arabs, the pakis don't have much choice. Israel has every reason to be worried, so does Greece and.. Europe . A nuclear armed Turkey can throw out any sort of strategic calculation.

Former U.S. National Security Adviser Bolton “Trump Wanted To Make an Impression on Erdoğan”
In an interview with DER SPIEGEL, former U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton discusses the case against Turkey’s Halkbank, which has been accused of helping Iran circumvent American sanctions. He says Donald Trump and Turkish President Erdoğan were in close contact about the issue.
Interview Conducted By Alexander Sarovic, 03.03.2021

The U.S. Justice Department suspects that Turkey’s state-owned Halkbank helped the Iranian regime circumvent American sanction on a large scale. If the bank is found guilty in its trial at a New York federal district court, observers say it could face a fine as high as $20 billion or expulsion from the SWIFT international banking system.
In an earlier trial, a witness testified that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was involved in the alleged sanctions violation. The Turkish government did not answer a request for comment by DER SPIEGEL. Halkbank declined to comment because of the ongoing proceedings against the bank. Former U.S. Attorney General William Barr could not be reached for a statement.
DER SPIEGEL: Mr. Bolton, how important a subject was Halkbank in the conversations Mr. Erdoğan had with Donald Trump?
John Bolton: Erdoğan was completely focused on getting Halkbank out of the investigation and potential prosecution that it had been in for quite some time. He raised the issue repeatedly with Trump. It would be a rare conversation in person or over the phone where it didn't come up. Erdoğan was saying constantly that the investigation was unjustifiable and should be settled or dismissed.
DER SPIEGEL: What did the deal Turkey’s leadership was trying to reach entail?
Bolton: They wanted to get Halkbank’s vice president, Mehmet Hakan Atilla, back from the United States. He had been convicted by a federal court in New York for his role in the scheme to violate U.S. sanctions against Iran. There are provisions in American law where you can remand a prisoner to prison in a foreign country on the assumption they serve the same sentence under the same conditions. It's a pretty common practice. They also wanted either the case dismissed or the U.S. attorney in New York to agree to a settlement where Halkbank would not have to admit wrongdoing. That is the sticking point in most settlements where the prosecutors think they have a very strong case.

:rotfl: I have to admit, if that gasbag Erdogan ever told the other gasbags (Greta Thunberg, Ocasio-Cortez, Bernie Sanders, George Soros) to STFU and stop preaching to the world about "climate change", I might be tempted to admire him for a few seconds.

Turkey's Erdogan quits European treaty on violence against women

President Tayyip Erdogan pulled Turkey out of an international accord designed to protect women, the government said on Saturday, prompting criticism from those who said it was necessary to tackle rising domestic violence.

After big wins, interest in Turkish combat drones soars

Whether in Syria, Libya or Azerbaijan, Turkey's combat drones have scored high-profile successes that Ankara hopes to use in its quest to become a premier exporter of the aerial vehicles.

Besides their proven ability to take out enemy tanks, analysts said drones also offer Turkey a chance to beef up its spheres of influence through an increasingly assertive foreign policy.

In Syria, Turkey used armed drones to avenge the deaths of dozens of soldiers and halt the advance of regime forces in the northwestern province of Idlib.

In Libya, the unmanned craft flew to the aid of Turkey's allied government in Tripoli, routing the advancing forces of eastern commander Khalifa Haftar at the capital's gates.

And late last year, Turkish drones helped Azerbaijan retake swathes of territory from ethnic Armenian separatists that had been lost in the mountains of Nagorno-Karabakh decades ago.

...........

Emre Caliskan, an analyst at London-based IHS Markit, an international business information firm, said Turkey's push into drone development was partially prompted by a failed putsch against Erdogan in 2016, which was followed by sweeping purges that decimated air force ranks.

"Turkey has had fewer F-16 jet pilots than F-16 jets. Training new F-16 pilots takes up to four years. But drone pilot training is much shorter at nine months," Caliskan explained.

"Turkey has tried to compensate the capability gap in air forces with the drone technology."

Machoman Erdogan fired the Turkish Central Bank chief today, he is the 3rd Turkish Central Bank chief to have lost his job in less than 24 months. Predictably the turkish lira commenced its slide against global currencies, it is now at 8.13 against USD, hovering around historic lows. Turkey is also facing a steep inflation and a rising public anger. Guess pakis will have to change their father yet again and look for a new one.

Turkey cuts off water supply to Chinese embassy as tempers boil over
Tom Hussey, Apr 10, 2021

The Turkish government has cut the water supply to the Chinese embassy in Ankara, following an online spat between the two countries. The extraordinary move comes as a dispute blew up between Turkish and Chinese politicians about the Chinese governments treatment of the Uyghur population in Western China. A Twitter war erupted with both sides exchanging insults on official government accounts which led to Turkey taking action and cutting off water to the embassy. The bizarre turn of events spun out of control after Turkish politicians criticised China for its treatment of Uyghurs. Back and forth arguments took place between the two nations online with insults thrown from either side criticising and defending claims against each other. One Turkish politician Marel Aksenar even tweeted a photo that the Xinjiang province. She said: "East Turkestan will definitely become independent one day" with a picture of the Xinjiang flag. Other Turkish politicians followed suit in a move that infuriated the Chinese Embassy in Turkey before they responded angrily on Twitter.
The account erupted in response, saying: "The Chinese side resolutely opposes and strongly condemns any challenge by any person or power to China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. "The Chinese side reserves the right to a justified response." The situation boiled over and Ankara decided to plug the water supply into the Chinese embassy prompting further anger from the Chinese.

Nice to see Turkey take Pakistan's role as "fortress of islam" and inheriting paki behavior in the process. Picking fights with powerful enemies while their economy slides down the pakistan, which reminds us of Pakistan in more ways than one.

"AlQaeda goes to X" is just a synonym of US-supported terrorist groups in X, and it started with pakistan and the Global Offensive Against Terror (GOAT) because "Al AQaeda was in Afghanisthan", now US moves out of Afghanistan and "al qaeda goes to Turkey", suggesting that the new target of destabilization for the USA is Syria, across turkey's border.

Would be in line with USA starting a war in Crimea, while destabilizing Syria. Syria/Iraq got rid of Turkey-supported ISIS due to russian efforts against ISIS in september 2017 in a matter of 2 months, after the US and the EU created a self-financing ISIS to topple Assad. As EU and US "fought" ISIS, while simultaneously fundraising for "white helmets" alias ISIS, ISIS just grew from strength to strength, until Russia crushed them in a matter of months.

ISIS and Al Qaeda will make a roaring come back in Syria with the assistance of Xiden and co. just a matter of time before George Clooney and other hollywood cretins start fundraising for ISIS. Isn't it wonderful to have a global-policeman like the US that supports freedom and democracy by creating ISIS and Al Qaeda all over the globe.

Biden becomes first US president to recognise Armenian genocide
President called Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Friday to inform him US would make designation on 106th anniversary of the genocide
Julian Borger in Washington and Martin Chulov in Beirut, Sat 24 Apr 2021

Joe Biden has become the first US president declare formal recognition of the Armenian genocide, more than a century after the mass killings by Ottoman troops and opening a rift between the new US administration and Ankara.
“The American people honour all those Armenians who perished in the genocide that began 106 years ago today,” Biden said in a statement on Saturday. “Beginning on 24 April 1915 with the arrest of Armenian intellectuals and community leaders in Constantinople by Ottoman authorities, one and a half million Armenians were deported, massacred or marched to their deaths in a campaign of extermination.”
Biden called the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, on Friday, to inform him that the US would make the designation on the 106th anniversary of the genocide. The conversation was reported to be tense and the issue was not mentioned in official accounts of the exchange.
Biden’s statement was immediately denounced by Ankara.
“Words cannot change or rewrite history,” the foreign minister, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, said on Twitter. “We have nothing to learn from anybody on our own past. Political opportunism is the greatest betrayal to peace and justice. We entirely reject this statement based solely on populism.”
A statement from the foreign ministry said: “It is clear that the said statement does not have a scholarly and legal basis, nor is it supported by any evidence. This statement … will open a deep wound that undermines our mutual trust and friendship. We call on the US president to correct this grave mistake”

The Ru objective is to drive a wedge between Turkey and the US/ NATO. Russian geo-strategic interests as all RuN warships have to
pass through Turkish waters. The asinine US has stopped JSFs going to Turkey,a project partner, and is only forcing the Turks to look elsewhere to Ru and China. But Turkey's anti- Assad attitude is bad for it as for Russia,Syria is its linchpin in the Mdditt/ME.
Its lease of Tartus as a permanent base for the RuN and appurtenent air bases too, allows it considerable power projection
in the region. All Arab states know that it was Russia along with Syrian state forces and Iranian-backed militia that saw off ISIS despite huge backing for that entity from other quarters.

The Paki-Turk relations have always been strong from the '60s.
With a new Ottoman pretender," Turdogan", in charge, one can only expect his megalomania to be well served by a grovelling, bumkissing Pak,desperate for friends. I do not know why we did not cancel the naval order for fleet support auxiliaries. It could've been sourced from Italy-old supplier,SoKoJapan, etc.
Turkey is v.unlikely to curtail its military support for Pak as a result.
There is no need for us to stand by Greece just to spite Turkey. It is a NATO nation, like Turkey and the NATO members can sort out theic problems. However,we'd be delighted to sell almost bankrupt Greece our milware that it can afford! The Turks and Pakis will quarrel once the Turks find out that the Pakis are bankrupt and want freebies instead.?

Russo-Turk relations should have little impact upon India as long as Ru milware meant for the Turks does not end up in Pak. Thus far despite improving relations,Russia has vetoed selling Pak any major weaponry, avoiding a controversy and affecting its relations with India. More worrying would be closer Turko- Sino ties with that combination of India's enemies collaborating on Afghanistan.

I predict a realignment of Indian for. policy going carefully closer to Russia as before ,but not overboard, just as US policy towards India worsens under Biden.

Most Armenians belong to the Armenian Orthodox faith. They are not part of the Catholic church, being closer to the Greek or Russian Orthodox faiths. However due to their small numbers, Armenians sometimes pray at Catholic churches when there is no Orthodox church in reach.

That is very flippant comment on Rustom2. What would Rustom2 missions be to deter "Chinese backstabbing" that the current crop of Indian satellites and UAVs cant do? I have been trying to post this that Turkey's UAV PR is loud after armenian conflict (the actual kills were done by Israeli ones). They wont survive during war time or war-like times against the pakis, let alone china. Most of the MALE prop-driven UAVs are LOS, very visible to radar and wont be of much advantage in the himalayan fronts due to the deep valleys, except for fixed path, long duration recon during peace time. And that is already being handled by many airborne sensors including the ARC ones

^ 108 + Turkish hubris will cost them big time when they get whacked in a coming war between them and the Bear. Who are these Polish drones going to be used against? With a belligerent Polish government, the Russians will be irked. Not very smart of the Turks, I say chaps. These sly foxes like the Chinese beat their trumpets for commerce/internal feel good factor but I bet even the dumbest Turkish general or OEM would know that their drones stand no chance against a first rate Army from the west or east. Meanwhile Turdogan and Im-da-dim can continue smoking the best, for their future empire.

Hence, the satellite link for the new Heron UAVs. Don't know is all the searcher and Heron UAVs witch India operates are going to be upgraded with satellite links, to over the LOS limitation.
Does the Rustom have satellite link inbuilt? Eagerly waiting for Rustom to reach 24+ hours endurance and 30K+ feet operational height. Sorry for the OT.

Asking again a question that I had asked earlier, but didn't receive any definitive answers.
Say in a future Indo-Pak conflict, if Turkey sends its F-16s and UAVs to help the pakis, how should India react?
The Turkish help could come in two forms.
1). They send only hardware, F16s with some ammo and drones/UAVs. In past conflicts some Arab countries did send this kind of help.
2). Turkey sends its own pilots and operators along with the hardware to take part in the conflict. Generally this has not happened in the Indo-Pak context, but Paki pilots have taken part in Arab-Israeli conflicts in the past, though using the host countries hardware. The pakis did deny official involvement and had allowed their pilots to volunteer of their own free will, to participate in the conflict without official paki government involvement.
The Turks could take either of the two routes and the wannabe Khalif might even take credit and send Turkish personal, wearing the Turkish flag, to help the pakis.

If either of the above were to happens, what should be India's reaction and if India wanted to take some action against Turkey, what could be our options. The first case of loaning hardware to the pakis is a milder case and maybe India would not take very serious action.
However, in my opinion, if Turkish personnel were to take part in a conflict in official capacity against India, then such an action should not go unpunished and exemplary punishment should be meted out.

The NATO collective defense article exists, but India being on good diplomatic terms with a majority of NATO members, might be able to pull off, a one off demonstrative action. Kind of like a onetime Jhapad.

NATO was founded to counter the USSR & allied states.
it's founding principle is "an attack on one is an attack on all"

If Turkey was to take part in an attack against India, then it would be an aggressor. The two states have no border or territorial dispute.
I don't think NATO would be involved. Turdogan would be on his own.

Even if aircraft/ships/troops were lost, I really don't think NATO would be involved.
The west is losing patience with him.

I don't think they would get involved even if an Indian sub was to launch fireworks & sink a few ships or attack airfields.

He has gone rogue, and they would probably be quite pleased that someone is teaching him a lesson.
Like every retarded islamist he has made a lot of enemies.
