Well in WB the overall population growth declined from about 17% to 13% but in Murshidabad it declined from 23% to 21%. In Assam,
the districts with illegal population it has actually gone up. It may have something to do with higher fertility as well. You will see the
demographic balance worsening in WB, Assam along with J&K and Kerala when the full census data comes out.

J&K and Kerala, whatever is happening is not due to illegal immigration. If demographics change due to other factors, then it is beyond the scope of discussion here. Could you give me the link where I can see pop changes by district.

J&K and Kerala are due to higher TFR. WB and Assam maybe due to continued illegal immigration or a stubbornly
resistant high TFR.

You can find the district wise data from Census India 2011. Just google.

Centre sets timelines for securing international borders in northeast.

The Centre has set timelines for securing the international borders which the landlocked northeast shares with four countries - Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and China.

While the Indo-Bangladesh border is expected to be fenced and floodlit by March-end, the open border with friendly Bhutan would be marked by roads. Another open border with Myanmar will be partly fenced while the border with China will have better surface communication for the border guarding forces.

According to the ministry of home affairs' (MHA) 'action plan V', a proposal has been approved for construction of 313km of border roads in the state along the Indo-Bhutan border. The Sashastra Seema Bal ( SSB) is deployed for guarding the Indo-Bhutan border, which is not fenced.

The MHA is also setting up an integrated checkpost (ICP) at Moreh in Manipur on the Indo-Myanmar border at a cost of Rs 136 crore. The detailed project report has been approved and land has been taken into possession by the Assam Rifles, who guard this border, on behalf of the MHA.

ICPs are also being built at Dawki in Meghalaya and the state government has transferred the physical possession of the land to the BSF, which is the border guarding force here. According to the MHA timeline, 30% of the work is targeted to be completed by March-end. Another ICP at Akhaura on the Indo-Bangladesh border in Tripura is also being built and 40% of the work is scheduled to be completed by March-end.

Myanmar has a 1,643km-long border with India in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram. Fencing of a part of this border in Moreh is going on.

In the northern part of the region, which shares a border with China, phase-wise construction of roads is being carried out by the MHA for operational use by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police ( ITBP).

Assam shares a 267km border with Bhutan while Arunachal Pradesh shares 217 km. Bangladesh shares a 4096.70-km long border with India of which Assam shares 263km, Meghalaya 443km, Tripura 856km, Mizoram 318 km. The remaining portion is in West Bengal. In the eastern part of the region, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram share 520km, 215km, 398km and 510km of the border with Myanmar.

River erosion upsets BSF at India-Bangladesh border.

River erosion has made the job of Border Security Force (BSF) guards increasingly difficult and dangerous along the India-Bangladesh border, says a senior BSF official."The erosion of river banks along the border has led to the collapse of the barbed wire fence, and damaged roads and border lines in many areas," the official said.

"The situation is critical in southern Assam where erosion caused by the Kushiara river (in Karimganj district) has made border patrolling very risky," he said.

Five states - West Bengal, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Assam and Tripura - share a 4,096-km border with Bangladesh, of which 2,980-km lies on land while 1,116 km is riverine.Barring West Bengal, the other four states lie in India's northeast and share a 1,880 km border with Bangladesh.

"Seasonal floods and heavy rains have made the border fence collapse and damaged border roads in many areas in the past couple of years, creating difficulty for foot and vehicular patrolling along these stretches," the official pointed out.According to the official, porous border areas along the rivers are hotbeds of crime, including smuggling and illegal infiltration.

"The collapse of border fencing and roads has allowed perpetrators to have a free run of unlawful activities," he said."Large stretches of unfenced border areas have added to the difficulties of BSF troops," the official pointed out.

To overcome these problems, India and Bangladesh have agreed to construct embankment on their sides of the border. However, construction work has not yet started.

"Delay in visits by the joint technical teams of India and Bangladesh and acquisition of land has again created trouble in the construction of embankment," the BSF official said.

He said the Indian side sometimes with the help of the public works and water resources departments of states placed cemented blocks along the riverine areas.

But Bangladesh had been laying stones on their side, causing further erosion on the Indian side.

"As the two countries share 54 common rivers, the riverine boundaries are a major headache for the BSF," he said.

According to a report of the union home ministry, the total length of India-Bangladesh border sanctioned to be fenced is around 3,437 km, out of which around 2,761 km of fencing has been completed.

As a pilot project, 277 km of floodlighting in West Bengal has also been completed. However, the report said the government has decided to undertake additional floodlighting in 2,840 km along the India-Bangladesh border.

Jingle bells on border to keep intruders away.

At the international border with Pakistan the word intruders rings a bell, literally. Taking a cue from the locals, jawans of the Border Security Force (BSF) have tied hundreds of tiny bells on the fence at the border. Now, whenever any intruder attempts to climb the fence, the sound of the bells will give him away.

The BSF is not short of hi-tech gadgets to safeguard the border. In fact, its arsenal includes thermal imagers, night vision goggles, electronic alarms, etc. However, this cost-effective yet simple method seems to be far more effective even as the fancier gadgets fall short of requirements.

"Not only do the sensitive bells make a sound when someone tries to climb over but even normal touching or pulling triggers the ringing after which the jawans spring into action," a sources explained.

There is of course a catch. "Even if some cattle or camel walk near the fence or collide against it, the bells start ringing. But this keeps the jawans alert. In fact, the bells are proving to be very helpful to the jawans," he added.

BSF Rajasthan frontier Inspector General P C Meena said that the bells tied on the fence have become a symbol of peace. He said that apart from detecting intrusion or movement along the fencing, what it means is that the fence doesn't have to be electrified, making it safer for people and cattle.(Its a matter of National Security and here they are more concerned about making the fence safe for atleast a try to come in illegally !!!!!)

Meena said that electricity is not turned in the fencing at the border in some areas and bells — tied at gaps of 100-200 metres — is proving very helpful. In fact, over 600 bells have been attached to the border fence in Punjab and Rajasthan.

BSF jawans guarding the international border have to often deal with hostile conditions. The soldiers patrol vast areas filled with shifting dunes, thick shrubs and deep trenches. To add to this, they have to do this in extreme cold amid thick fog and mist. In these unpleasant conditions, the innovative use of bells comes as a welcome relief, helping raise the alarm when required and keeping stress levels low.

In view of the Dragon frothing at its mouths in the North East - Doklam plateau standoff, a look at some road projects and status is warranted. I am not sure I should post on the main China thread so posting it here. This is a very negative report

Sikkim standoff: India efforts in building own roads near China border sputtering, here is why
By: FE Online | New Delhi | Updated: July 12, 2017 8:55 AM

The construction of roads, intended to ease the movement of troops and military hardware in the event of a border conflict has rather been slow and uneven.

China’s attempt to build a road through the Dokhlam Plateau triggered a standoff at the Bhutan trijunction in the Sikkim sector. The plateau is a disputed land that both China and Bhutan claim. ( :-o Not True. Going By Chinese logic all land across the world will become disputed )The plateau overlooks Tibet’s Chumbi Valley, a Himalayan passageway into which the Nathu La pass opens, and which is of great strategic importance for India’s ‘chicken’s neck’ sector connecting the Northeast to the mainland. For many years now, China has been constructing roads and rail infrastructure close to the 4,000-km disputed land with India. India recently started a project to build a road to make it even on its side. The construction of roads, intended to ease the movement of troops and military hardware in the event of a border conflict has rather been slow and uneven. According to Indian Express report, in its audit of ‘Construction of Indo-China Border Roads by Border Roads Organisation’ submitted to Parliament in March 2017, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India reported that as of end-March 2016, most roads were incomplete — and the completed ones were unfit to carry heavy equipment, including weaponry.
A total of 73 Indo-China Border Roads (ICBRs) are to be built out of which 61roads with a total length of 3,409.27 km were to be constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO)the body that builds and maintains roads infrastructure in the border areas. During the Audit, the Auditor found out that 61 ICBRs should have been completed by 2012 but by March 2016 after spending 98pct of the estimated cost of Rs 4,644 crore, only 22 roads were completed. After a proper study of 24 ICBRs by the Auditor six of the completed roads ““were not fit for running of specialised vehicles or equipment.” The other 17 roads were of substandard quality even after spending Rs 1,927.28 crore on building it. The delay of the roads is because of the Reconnaissance, Survey and Trace Cut (RSTC) in many cases was not carried out not carried out properly as the gradient, soil classification, alignment of the road taken at the time of carrying out RSTC were at wide variance with the conditions encountered during the execution found the Auditor. RSTC is conducted before beginning work by BRO to determine the route alignment, prepare project documents and make project estimates. Another major reason, the Audit found, was the delay in submission and approval of the Annual Works Plan each year from 2011. With approval for funds and manpower projections awaited, works were begun on the basis of ad hoc estimates. Estimates and annual targets were revised after six months of execution of works, but the revised targets too could not be met in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16.

Estimates and annual targets were revised after six months of execution of works, but the revised targets too could not be met in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16.
As per the report, the Auditor in its report said,”The works executed have been manipulated in papers with financial irregularities of several crores of rupees and that it was reflective of increasing corruption and lack of accountability in BRO.” He added, “The works executed have been manipulated in papers with financial irregularities of several crores of rupees and that it was reflective of increasing corruption and lack of accountability in BRO.” Another loss has been that of human lives. As work dragged on in higher altitudes and bad weather conditions, 21 General Reserve Engineering Force (GREF) personnel and 48 Casual Paid Labourers (CPLs) were killed in work site and military transport accidents between April 2012 and March 2016. Prolonged deployment of personnel in difficult areas without any means of communication with their families, lack of adequate medical support, and non-availability of entertainment facilities had affected their physical and psychological health.
The Director General of Border Road told Indian Express that high altitude, reduction in the efficiency of vehicles equipment due to extreme atmospheric conditions, problems in funding, non-availability of vehicles, equipment and plants, and the closure of roads for six months are the reasons for the delay. The Auditor said,”“reasons are not convincing as these aspects of terrain and climatic conditions” were to be taken into consideration while preparing annual plans.

CAG report on performance audit of Indo China Border Roads for year ended March 2016

Among other things...
All 61 ICBRs included in Border Roads Development Board’s programme were planned to be completed by 2012.
We, however, observed that out of 61 ICBRs planned to be completed by 2012, only 15 roads had been completed by 2012.

Out of the balance 46 roads, only 07 roads were completed by March 2016 extending the Probable Date of Completion (PDC) of balance roads up to
the year 2021. Thus 22 roads (36 percent) had only been completed up to March 2016, despite incurring an expenditure of ` 4536 crore (98
percent) against estimated cost of ` 4644 crore for 61 ICBRs.

Further, out of 24 ICBRs selected for audit, four roads were completed by March, 2012 and two were completed by March 2016. Thus only 06 roads (25percent) costing Rs. 164 crore were completed up to March 2016, despite incurring an expenditure of ` 2713.76 crore for 24 selected ICBRs.
Users expressed their dissatisfaction as the road works executed by BRO did not adequately meet the users’ requirement. Users’ feedback indicated that there were issues like improper gradient, undulating surface, improper turning radius, minimum passing places and unsatisfactory riding comfort in the 17 roads out of 24 selected for audit.

Even six roads which had been completed at a cost of 164 crore, were not fit for running of specialized
vehicles/equipments such as Smerch, Pinaka and Bofors due to above limitations.

Govt Approves Rs 6809-Cr Bi-directional Zojila Tunnel Project in Jammu & Kashmir.

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the construction of Asia's longest bi-directional Zojila Pass tunnel at an estimated cost of Rs 6,089 crore, which will reduce the travel time between Srinagar and Leh to 15 minutes from the current 3.5 hours.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday gave its go-ahead to the 14.2-km long tunnel project in Jammu and Kashmir to provide all-weather connectivity between Srinagar, Kargil and Leh, which remains cut-off from the rest of India during winters due to heavy snowfall.

"Zojila tunnel will be the longest bi-directional tunnel in Asia. (Its) construction period (will be) seven years because of a very difficult terrain where in some areas temperature dips to minus 45 degree celsius. The tunnel shall be a engineering marvel as first of its kind in such a geographical area," Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said.

The project would enhance the safety of travellers crossing Zojila Pass and reduce the travel time from 3.5 hours to 15 minutes, he added.

"Defense forces have to face hard time ensuring supplies to border posts during winters. This pass is most strategic for the entire Kargil sector which has seen intrusion and war in the past," Gadkari said.

He said the prime minister will lay the foundation stone of the project and work is likely to start this year. Zojila pass is situated at an altitude of 11,578 feet on Srinagar-Kargil-Leh National Highway which remains closed during winters (December to April) due to heavy snowfall and avalanches cutting off Leh-Ladakh region from Kashmir.

The government has given its approval to the construction, operation and maintenance of 2-lane bi-directional Zojila Tunnel with Parallel Escape (Egress) Tunnel excluding approaches on Srinagar-Leh section connecting NH-1A at Km 95 and at Km 118 in Jammu and Kashmir on engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) mode.

Earlier, the government in a statement said apart from providing all weather connectivity between Srinagar, Kargil and Leh, the project will bring about all round economic and socio-cultural integration of these regions.

"The project has strategic and socio-economic importance and shall be an instrument for the development of the economically backward districts in Jammu and Kashmir," it said.

The construction period of the project is seven years. "The civil construction cost of the project is Rs 4,899.42 crore. The total capital cost of the project is Rs 6,808.69 crore. It includes the cost towards land acquisition, resettlement and rehabilitation and other pre-construction activities as well as maintenance and operation cost of tunnel for four years," the statement said.

The project aims at construction of 14.15 km long two-lane bi-directional single tube tunnel with a parallel 14.2 km long egress tunnel excluding approaches between Baltal and Minamarg in the state.

The project will be implemented by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRT&H) through the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).

The main objective of the project is to provide all whether connectivity to strategically important Leh region in Jammu and Kashmir which at the moment is limited to at best 6 months because of snow on the passes and threat of avalanches.

"This project along with other ongoing projects like 6.5 km long Z-Morh tunnel at Gagangir would ensure safe, fast and cheap connectivity between the two regions of Kashmir and Ladakh," the statement said.

It will further increase the employment potential for the local labourers for the project activities, it added. The government said that on completion, it will lead to enormous boost in employment as local businesses get linked to National market and the beautiful region is able to receive round the year tourist traffic.

IL&FS Transportation last year in July had said it has emerged as the lowest bidder for Rs 4,899 crore Zojila pass tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir.

"We wish to inform that the company has emerged as the lowest bidder for the aforesaid (Zojila tunnel) project. The company had quoted an amount of Rs 4,899.42 crore to be constructed in a period of 2,555 days (7 years)," IL&FS Transportation said.

Gadkari had earlier said, "We understand the plight of the people in Leh and Ladakh region who face severe crisis during winters when they are cut off from the rest of India for six months. We are committed to undertaking the project."

On March 1, 2016, the transport ministry had ordered "re-bidding" for the project, which had been awarded to IRB Infrastructure.

The decision was taken at a high-level meeting, chaired by Gadkari, after Congress leader Digvijay Singh alleged that guidelines were violated while awarding the contract. The ministry, however, had denied the charges.

I am missing something here. How can travel time be 15 minutes between Srinagar and Leh. Will the tunnel reduce a 3.5 hour section to 15 minutes ?

The Vajpayee government had identified this tunnel to be built ASAP before losing power and the anti national congressi scamsters did nothing in the following 10 years. Notice how Digvijay Singh even got the tender cancelled on some guidelines excuse when it was finalised in 2015.

Three border fencing workers kidnapped by outlawed outfit NLFT in Tripura.

Three border fencing workers were abducted at gunpoint from an unfenced patch of Indo-Bangla border in Dhalai district by cadres of the outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT).

India and Bangladesh share a 4,096 Km long semi-porous border, out of which Tripura shares 856 km,parts of which are still unfenced. Border fencing work is still going on at different areas of Sepahijala, Dhalai and South Tripura district including Sabroom, the southernmost tip of the state before Bangladesh.

Speaking to reporters here this morning, Additional Inspector General (AIG) Subrata Chakraborty said the three workers—Subrata Debnath, Ganamohan Tripura and Subhash Bhowmik—who were engaged in work between Malda Kumar Para and Hariamoni Para villages of Ambassa sub-division, barely 100 my away from the international border, were abducted on Monday.

“The three of them included a JCB driver, a work supervisor and a labourer sardar (labourer contractor). They were busy leveling the field to erect a border fence when few ultras crossed the international border and abducted them. We suspect they were taken across the border to Bangladesh,” the official said.

On involvement of the banned NLFT insurgent outfit, the official said details are yet to be confirmed. Local police and administrative officials declined to comment on the issue. However, intelligence sources said that the banned militant outfit is known to have carried out the abduction.

A kidnapping case was registered at the local police station and the District Magistrate and Sub-Divisional Police Officer rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.

A person kidnapped from Damcherra, a tribal hamlet across the Tripura-Mizoram inter state boundary, on November 27 is yet to be found.

Earlier this month, BSF IG of Tripura Frontiers Sushanta Kumar Nath said his force and the Border Guards of Bangladesh (BGB) discussed collaborative measures to be taken on trans-border crimes, border violation, preventive measures, construction of single row fence along the Indo-Bangla international boundary and Coordinated Border Management Plan (CBMP) at a two-day IG level conference held in Agartala.

Massive boost to infra along India-China border; Connectivity on 59 strategically important roads achieved.

On Monday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said in Rajya Sabha that connectivity on 59 roads has been achieved along the India-China border. The minister, in a written response to a question, said as many as 61 India-China Border Roads (ICBRs) with a length of 3,323.57 kilometres were identified as strategically important. The work was entrusted to the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), he said. The construction of 42 roads with a length of 1,530.38 kilometres has been completed, the Defence Minister said. On 59 roads of 3,205.16 kilometres in length, connectivity has already been achieved. While on the remaining two roads of 118.41 kilometres length, the unconnected portion is 29 kilometres, he said.

According to a PTI report, in view of the face-off between the militaries of India and China in eastern Ladakh as well as aggressive infrastructure development by China along the border, efforts have been redoubled by India in order to improve connectivity along the frontier.

By this month, 10 ICBR roads are targeted to be completed. While development work on seven roads is likely to be over by the month of March next year and work on another two roads is expected to be over by March 2023, Singh said. In order to expedite the implementation of the road projects, the financial and administrative powers of BRO executives have been enhanced, the minister said.

The Union Minister further stated that out of 61 roads, 27 roads with a length of 1,725.46 kilometres are in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, 12 roads with a length of 1,064.14 kilometres are in Ladakh and 14 roads with a length of 355 kilometres are in the state of Uttarakhand. Also, there are five ICBR roads in Himachal Pradesh of length 116.99 kilometres, while the state of Sikkim has three roads with a length of 61.98 kilometres, Singh said.

Should be called "India-Tibet Border Roads (ITBRs)" instead. Narrative is important.

SF boosts vigil at Indo-Bangla border after militants found taking ‘special interest’ in Tripura ADC polls.
“We have also introduced new technologies like use of CCTV cameras in certain patches for better management of border”, the official said.
Tripura shares 856 km-long international border with its neighbouring country. Around 67 km in different patches are still unfenced. This includes a few strategic locations at Sonamura of Sepahijala district and Sabroom in South Tripura, a few of which involve riverine borders. The BSF IG Nath today said pending work of around 14 km single row fencing has started; the entire length of pending fencing work is expected to be completed by end of 2021.

Indigenous Double-Lane Modular Bridge, Umling La Pass & more! 27 infra projects built by BRO inaugurated.

Today, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh virtually dedicated to the nation 24 bridges as well as three roads, built by Border Roads Organisation (BRO) across four States and two UTs. Of the 24 bridges, nine of them are located in Jammu & Kashmir; five bridges each in Ladakh and the state of Himachal Pradesh; three bridges in Uttarakhand and one each in the states of Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. Of the three roads, two roads are in Ladakh and one road is in the state of West Bengal. The main highlight of the event was the inauguration of the country’s first indigenous Class 70 140-feet Double-Lane Modular Bridge, which has been constructed at 11,000 feet height at Flag Hill Dokala, Sikkim and Chisumle-Demchok road at Umling La Pass in Ladakh at over 19,000 feet which also holds the Guinness World Record of the highest motorable road in the world.

The Union Minister said the road at Umling-La pass will boost tourism, enable faster movement of Armed Forces as well as ensure socio-economic development of the region. He further stated that in border areas, roads cater to the strategic requirements as well as ensure equal participation of remote areas in the nation’s development of the nation, commending Border Roads Organisation for its perseverance in achieving the feat despite the challenges of high altitude and sub-zero temperatures.

Singh described the indigenous Double-Lane Modular Bridge as an example of the Modi government’s ‘Aatmanirbharta’ and also appreciated that the project has been constructed at a much lower cost and can be dismantled if required. The e-inauguration held today has taken the tally of India’s infrastructure projects executed by the Border Roads Organisation to a record 102 in a single working season, that too in the 75th year of the nation’s Independence. The organization has completed the construction of projects in a record timeframe, by using state-of-the-art technology in most of the projects.

Indo-Bangla border in Tripura will be completely fenced by next year: BSF IG.

The India-Bangladesh border in Tripura will be completely fenced by next year to ensure fool-proof security, a top BSF official said on Saturday. Border Security Force Inspector General (Tripura Frontier), Sushanta Kumar Nath, said that 80-85 per cent of the 856-km-long India-Bangladesh international border in the northeastern state has already been fenced.

"Substantial fencing work has been done in the Tripura's eastern sector last year, and work on a 31-km porous stretch has been taken up on a priority basis. Single row fencing has gained momentum in the state's western sector, and 10 km was fenced last year," he told reporters.

Setting up of floodlights is going hand-in-hand with fencing work, he said. We are hopeful of completing fencing and setting up of floodlights along the entire stretch of the India-Bangladesh border in the state by next year," he said.

MEIL completes five-km-long tunnelling work at Zojila.

Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Limited(MEIL), has achieved a milestone of completing works of a 5-km-long tunnelling work, as part of the 18-km-long all-weather Zojila Tunnels in a record time of 15 months.

The project of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL), being executed by MEIL, is envisaged to ensure connectivity between Srinagar and Ladakh throughout the year without any interruptions.

The Zojilla Tunnels-Nilgrar 1, 2 and Zojila main tunnel– are being expeditiously executed, despite harsh weather conditions such as snowfall, and blizzards at a high altitude of 3,528 meters above mean sea level (AMSL).

Zojila project, Asia’s longest bidirectional tunnel, is a challenging development project even for strategic reasons. Harpal Singh, project head, Zojila Tunnel, said, “Our MEIL team have executed this project in toughest conditions with dedication and hardwork.”

The current winter witnessed the highest-ever snowfall in the history of Jammu and Kashmir with temperatures dropping to -30 degrees Celsius (minus 30 degrees). The project consists of three tunnels, four bridges, snow protection structures, culverts, catch dam, deflector dam, and cut & cover tunnel.

MEIL was awarded the project on October 1, 2020, connecting Kashmir Valley to Ladakh. The total length of the project is 32 kilometres and is divided into two parts. The Part I of the project’s 18-km stretech connects Sonamarg with Taltal, having major bridges and twin tunnels. Tunnel T1 has two tubes planned in it.

MEIL began the project work in the month of May 2021, after the construction of access roads. Works at Zojila Main Tunnel, which is 13.3-km-long, are also in full swing.

The company has achieved 600 metres advance from Ladakh, and 300 metres advance from Kashmir’s side. Completion of the project (September 2026) is on track and on schedule.

Union Cabinet approves construction of all-weather tunnel to Ladakh.

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday gave its nod for the construction of the 4.1-km Shinkun La tunnel on the Nimu-Padam-Darcha road link to provide all-weather connectivity to the border areas of Ladakh.

Providing details of the cabinet decision, Union minister Anurag Thakur said the tunnel will be completed by December 2025 at a cost of Rs 1,681 crore. The length of the tunnel will be 4.1 km. An approach will also be built by December 2025, he said.

The Shinkun La tunnel will provide all-weather road connectivity to Ladakh and this will be the shortest route to the border areas of the Union territory from other parts of the country, the minister said.

"The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) today approved the Shinku La tunnel for Ladakh area which will provide all-weather connectivity to the Ladakh region with the entire country," the minister said.

"This (project) is also very important as far as the security and safety of the country is concerned.... It will also help in the movement of our security forces in that region," Thakur said.

Before this, the minister said, the Atal tunnel was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi linking Manali to Leh and it provides all-weather connectivity throughout the year. Another tunnel which is under construction is the Zojila tunnel on the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh national highway. It will be inaugurated soon.

Thakur said after the Shinkun La tunnel is made on the Nimu-Padam-Darcha marg, it will help connect the Ladakh area, especially Zanskar Valley, with the entire country.

Sources said this is a significant step in terms of security perspective as Nimu in Ladakh is close to Kargil as well as Leh and the armed forces can do faster deployment of forces and equipment in the area, if required in a tense situation in the eastern Ladakh sector with China.

Indo-Pak border should be fenced and an unsurmountable wall on the border is the only solution to prevent hordes of refugees after pukistan implodes.
