Green-light given for 20% hike in drug prices
ECC fixes wheat procurement target at 5 million metric tons for new crop
Shahbaz Rana, April 29, 2023

ISLAMABAD: Inflation-hit people were given another shock on Friday when the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet approved a rise of up to 20% in retail prices of general medicines and 14% for essential ones, prompting immediate criticism from drug manufacturers who said the increases were too small.
The decision followed a months-long standoff with importers and manufacturers, whose associations have been demanding an across-the-board 39% rise, warning that the industry could otherwise collapse.
The ECC took up the summary of the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination that sought an increase in maximum retail prices of the medicines based on the recommendations of the Policy Board of Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan. The increase was demanded to offset the impact of devaluation of the rupee and inflation on the manufacturing cost.
To ensure continuous availability of drugs in the market, the ECC allowed the manufacturers and importers to increase their existing market retail price of essential drugs up to 14%.
Similarly, it allowed increase in the market retail price of all other drugs up to 20% on the basis of average CPI for the current year.

that is unexpected....

The GoI have publicly knocked the britshits down a peg, or two, or three.

security wise, the storming of the Indian embassy in london, by the khalistanis, hasn't received the due consideration it should have merited from the britshits, who apparently do not want to piss off their paki and khalistani vote banks or show that they are accommodating of Indian concerns.

apart from goodwill, this colonial hangover will end up costing them financially, and diplomatically.

Inflation projected to hit 38pc as food, energy prices rocket
ISLAMABAD: The government expects inflation to remain high in the coming months and it may hit an all-time high of 38 per cent in April, driven by hikes in food and energy prices.

“The inflation is expected to remain in the range of 36-38 per cent for April,” the finance ministry said in its Monthly Economic Update and Outlook released on Saturday.

The short-term inflation measured by the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) was 46.8pc last week, just shy of the record 47.2pc witnessed a week ago. Monthly inflation measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 35.4pc in March — the highest on record.

Similarly, it allowed increase in the market retail price of all other drugs up to 20% on the basis of average CPI for the current year.
Annual inflation rate hit 35% in March, fuelled by a depreciating currency, a rollback in subsidies and the imposition of higher tariffs to secure a bailout package of $1.1 billion from the International Monetary Fund. Food inflation has soared to 47%.

But the government had pushed back against the demands for higher medicine prices, fearing such a move would lose it support months before national general elections.

The Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Association (PPMA) criticised the increase, which it said was way lower than it had expected.

Traders struggle to find buyers this Eid as high prices bite
KARACHI: The outgoing Sweet Eid has left a bitter aftertaste for many garments, shoes and artificial-jewellery sellers, as inflation-bitten citizens tightened their purse strings because of significant price hikes across the board.

The traders have mostly blamed the rupee’s depreciation and the central bank’s curbs on imports for higher prices.

Kapra Market, commonly known as Kagzi Bazaar and located near Memon Masjid at M.A. Jinnah Road, lacked buyers due to high prices of unstitched fabric and shalwar kameez.

Yaqoob Bali, chairman of the Kagzi Bazar Old City Tajir Ittehad, said the price of gents’ blended shalwar kameez fabric arriving from Faisalabad had soared by half on an average over the past year, meaning the fabric selling for Rs400 per metre is now priced at Rs600.
The prices of cotton suits have jumped at least 60pc over the past year, and they are available at Rs100 to Rs1,000 per metre depending on the quality.

Women’s clothes now sell in the range of Rs1,200 to Rs5,000 per suit after a hike of 50pc in their prices.

Mr Bali estimated that around 30-40pc of men had not made shalwar kameez this Eid, whereas some of them had bought only one suit compared to two to three a year ago. He blamed many factors for the increase in prices, including the rupee’s devaluation, high transport costs due to rising fuel rates, surging power and gas bills, and higher prices of yarn, laces, embroidery and linen.
Sales of children’s shalwar kameez shrank to 60 per cent while those of gents’ suits remained 40pc as compared to last year’s Eid, he said, adding that many traders could only sell half of their shalwar kameez stock, which had dented the profits. He said the landed price of Chinese fabric had doubled to Rs400 per metre over the past year due to the rupee’s fall.

The price of the local fabric, mostly coming from Faisalabad, had also hit Rs280 per metre, much higher than last year, he said, adding that plain cotton shalwar kameez were sold at Rs2,500 apiece while embroidered ones were available at Rs3,500-4,000.

Tea price soars for third time in 18 months
RAWALPINDI: The cost of a cup of tea has been raised from Rs50 to Rs60 for the third time in the last 18 months, forcing many people, particularly traders and office employees, to stop taking tea or offer it to their visitors.

The first increase in the cost of cup of tea was in the last months of 2021 when the cost was raised from Rs30 to Rs40.

The second raise from Rs40 to Rs50 took place in the mid of 2022 and the latest increase came about just after Eidul Fitr.

The cost of a cup of tea was increased from Rs50 to Rs60 in the garrison city where neither food authorities nor the district administration or price control authorities have any check on the price increase.
Now a cup of tea costs Rs60 in several cafeterias, kiosks and restaurants, where price lists for tea, special tea, qehwa, and other food items have been printed for customers’ awareness and to avoid anger over the price increase. While the cost of a cup of tea (doodh patti) was increased to Rs70.

In October, 2021 the cost of a cup of tea was increased from Rs30 to Rs40 almost 35pc due to the continuous rising price of loose tea, tea bags, milk, sugar and gas.

The increase from Rs30 to Rs40 was almost 35pc due to increased cost of loose tea, tea bags, milk, sugar and gas which have not remained constant over the years.

“It is justified that tea sellers should be allowed to increase the price of a cup of tea due to a hike in prices of ingredients,” a tea seller told Dawn.

Atlas Honda, Nestle increase rates
KARACHI: Price shocks continue for the buyers of motorcycles as Atlas Honda Ltd increased the prices of its two-wheeler by Rs5,000-Rs15,000 with effect from May 1.

The new price ofHonda CD70 is Rs154,900, CD70 Dream Rs165,900, Pridor Rs203,900, CG125 Rs229,900, CG125S Rs275,900, CB125F Rs380,900, CB150F Rs473,900 and CB150F-Silver Rs477,900.

The country’s second largest bike assembler, United Auto Industries, has also announced a price hike of Rs3,000-Rs5,000 from May 9 for United 70cc-125cc models while citing a rising cost of production.

Mohammad Sabir Sheikh — a seasoned dealer at the Akbar Road market, which is a hub of used and new bikes in Karachi — said the claim of high localisation of up to 96 per cent by Atlas Honda in decades-old 70cc and 125cc models does not seem justifiable in view of the persistent price hikes in the name of depreciation. He recalled that Honda CD70 and CG125 were available at Rs63,500 and Rs105,500 in December 2017.

Per ChatGPT (because my search via conventional search engines got me nowhere):
According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, the total Road Freight Transport in Pakistan in billions of ton-kilometers for the past five years (2015-16 to 2019-20) are:

2015-16: 352.142 billion ton-kilometers
2016-17: 365.228 billion ton-kilometers
2017-18: 388.099 billion ton-kilometers
2018-19: 404.282 billion ton-kilometers
2019-20: 412.314 billion ton-kilometers
A key measure to judge what is going on in the Pakistan economy is to get recent figures.
(Also, ChatGPT is known to lie, so independent validation of these numbers would be useful.)

Grant recipients will implement the program for transgender youth ages 13-25
Patrick Hauf, Fox News, May 2, 2023

The Biden administration is offering a $500,000 grant to help teach the English language in Pakistan, in part by providing "intensive professional development courses for Pakistani transgender youth."
The State Department grant said it is aimed at teaching English language skills to Pakistani youth so they can "better participate in the global community and prepare them for success in the workplace." The grant aims to reach that goal by focusing on three components: "(1) Professional Development for English Language Teachers from Non-Mainstream Institutions; (2) Professional Development for novice Pakistani English language teachers; and (3) Professional Development for Transgender Youth and for Afghan Teachers, Students, and Young Professionals Residing in Pakistan."

Goal post is being shifted further. Budget is expected to be tabled on June 9. Truth is that there is not much happening on the IMF deal right now and it is mostly because of TSP govt dragging its feet due to election and other political reasons. Question is how are they avoiding a default without the IMF deal?
IMF TO FINALISE STAFF LEVEL AGREEMENT AFTER BUDGET 2023-24: MIFTAH ISMAIL
ISLAMABAD: The former finance minister Miftah Ismail said that the IMF will finalize the staff level agreement after reviewing the Budget in June, ARY News reported.

He added that the budget documents will be first sent to International Monetary Fund and if the budget is approved then the staff level agreement will be finalized.

The federal government earlier started preparations for the budget 2023-24 in which conditions forwarded by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are likely to be implemented.

Flour millers threaten to go on strike
KARACHI: Pakistan Flour Mills Association (PFMA) has given a 24-hour deadline to the Sindh government, asking the provincial administration to lift the ban on purchase of wheat by Karachi millers.

In case its demand is not met by Wednesday evening, the association threatened that they would go on a shutter-down strike.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, PFMA Sindh Zone Chairman Chaudhry Amir Abdullah announced “we will go on a shutter-down strike for an indefinite period if free access is not provided to wheat supply from growers in upper Sindh and Punjab by 7pm Wednesday evening.”

Almost 70% of flour mills have been shut down in Karachi owing to the unavailability of wheat despite being a peak production season. “Around 92 flour mills are located in the city,” he stated.

No subsidy without prior approval, IMF tells Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has incorporated into the draft Memorandum of Economic and Financial Policies (MEFP) that Pakistan will not provide any kind of additional subsidy without prior approval of the Fund. Meanwhile, the federal government sought US intervention once again on Wednesday to convince the IMF staff to move towards striking a staff-level agreement (SLA) as Islamabad had fulfilled all the major conditions given in the Fund’s prescriptions.

“Pakistan and the IMF have evolved broader consensus that Islamabad will not provide any additional subsidy without prior approval of the Fund staff during the remaining period of the ongoing Extended Fund Facility (EFF) programme,” top sources privy to the development confided to The News on Wednesday.

Thus, the lingering controversy over the proposed cross-fuel subsidy had now been resolved largely, which had proved one of the major stumbling blocks in the way of signing the SLA.

Pakistan bailout review to conclude once financing in place: IMF
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is working with Pakistani authorities to conclude a ninth review of a bailout programme, its mission chief said on Friday of the funding critical for the cash-strapped country to avert an economic collapse.

“IMF supports the authorities in the implementation of policies in the period ahead, including in the technical work to prepare the FY24 budget, which is to be passed by the National Assembly before end-June.”

Pakistan’s finance ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tandoor owners in Lahore increase roti price while govt looks on
Khalid Hasnain, May 5, 2023

LAHORE: Tandoor owners across the city have increased the prices of roti and naan by Rs6 and Rs8 after the city district administration rejected their demand for new prices to be notified.
Dawn has learned that in posh areas, tandoor owners are charging even higher rates.
People have criticised the current prices, with roti being sold at Rs20 and plain naan at Rs30, claiming that the prices may further increase to Rs25 and Rs35 due to rising flour prices and other issues.
Arshad, a resident of Mughalpura, expressed his frustration, stating that the cost of roti has increased from Rs15 to Rs20 and may soon reach Rs25. He lamented the lack of checks and control on skyrocketing prices, making life increasingly difficult.
Arslan, a resident of Wahdat Colony, criticised both tandoor owners and the officials for not taking any action for the benefit of the poor. He mentioned that a naan, which used to cost around Rs22, was now being sold for Rs30, and during his visit to Model Town, he found the price to be Rs35. Similarly, roti is being sold at Rs25 in that area. He urged the city administration to crack down on the inflated prices.
There are approximately 13,000 tandoors and 5,000 dhabas (small hotels/restaurants) operating in Lahore. Tandoors sell naan and roti, while dhabas sell roti, cooked vegetables and pulses.
Aftab Aslam Gill, president of the Mutahidda Nanbai Association, confirmed the sale of roti (100 grams) for Rs20 and naan for Rs30 in Lahore. He also acknowledged that the rates in posh localities were higher than in the rest of the city.

Lawhore-via-UAE-Saudi... More insult to Paki H&D

https://tribune.com.pk/story/2415393/im ... conditions
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Friday said that the $1.2 billion 9th review of the bailout programme will be completed once the necessary financing is in place and the agreement is finalised, noting that there was an agreement on the issue between both the sides

The statement, sent to The Express Tribune, highlights a widening trust deficit between Pakistan and the IMF, as it negates the claim made by the government with respect to meeting all prior actions necessary to complete the 9th review.

“The IMF’s demand is worrisome,” said a cabinet member on condition of anonymity.

Less than two months are left in the expiry of the stalled $6.5 billion IMF programme. There seems to be no possibility that Pakistan and the IMF will conveniently complete the remaining three outstanding reviews of the programme.

The finance ministry sources said that the finance secretary recently urged Nathan Porter to review the demand for an agreement on the next year’s budget.

However, the IMF, already agitated by the government’s contradictory claims about completion of the conditions, may not offer any major relief to Pakistan.

Pakistan needs to repay $3.7bn debt by June: Fitch
KARACHI: Pakistan needs to repay another $3.7 billion in external debt by the end of June 30 this year, Bloomberg reported on Friday.

During the entire current fiscal year, the country has been struggling to avoid default with the help of friendly countries and multilateral lending agencies but the next fiscal year is about to begin with another huge requirement of dollars.

In an interview with Bloomberg, a Fitch Rating official said Pakistan would have to repay $3.7bn up to June 2023. The Fitch official expects China would roll over a $2.4bn loan maturing next month.

There should be profit before it can be shared.

Also:

https://www.dredging.org/news/industry- ... pany%20Ltd.

Initially estimated at PKR1 billion (GBP 3.1 million) in June 2022, the desilting operations at Pakistan’s Gwadar Port have since been recalculated to nearly five times the original estimation submitted by the China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd. The project, currently estimated at PKR 4.7 billion (GBP 14.1 million), will re-establish 14.5 metres of the natural and original operational depth of Gwadar Port.

This estimation accounts for the large build up of clay, mud and sand sediment in the 4.7km long navigational channel, basin and berthing area of Gwadar Port. The increased sedimentation throughout the port since the last major dredging project in 2015 has caused it to lose its natural depth, as of date of publication it is sitting at an estimated 11.6 metres as opposed to 14.5 metres for the outer navigational channel and 13.8 metres for the inner navigational channel and turning berth.

With build-up already having caused the diversion of a large vessel, the port is currently only capable of supporting vessels of 30,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT) as opposed to its initially designed capacity of 50,000 DWT. This poses a significant issue as Gwadar Port is a key component of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project, which is currently in its 10th year and a key part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

Pakistan unlikely to get IMF loan anytime soon
ISLAMABAD: It seems that Pakistan may not get the crucial tranche from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) anytime soon, as the country’s loan programme is not on the agenda of the lender’s Executive Board till May 17.

Pakistan and the IMF have been discussing fiscal policy measures in the review since February, aiming to resume stalled funding of $1.1 billion due in November from a $6.5-billion programme agreed in 2019.

Pakistan is trying to unlock the crucial ninth review as other multilateral lenders have set the revival of the IMF programme as a precondition to unlock funding.

We consider that Pakistan will meet its external payments for the remainder of this fiscal year ending in June,” said .Grace Lim, a sovereign analyst with the ratings company in Singapore. “However, Pakistan’s financing options beyond June are highly uncertain. Without an IMF program, Pakistan could default given its very weak reserves.”
Now, even if there is some rescue in June, the Pakis will stumble to the next deadline when it has to pay up to another lender. There will be more uncertainty, more faith lost in the rupee, and inflation will scream ahead. I am actually beginning to relish this only. Sometimes the run up to the actual disaster is excruciating in itself.

this is one of the major issues that the paki fishermen operating from gwadar are complaining about.

street protests have been held because their livelihood has been very adversely affected

but the paki powers that be are schitt scared of the cheenis and so they haven't stopped o even asked the cheeni so far.

can you imagine what the snake oil selling cheeni crooks would have done to India, if India, under the congis and commies, had joined the CPEC

Someone up there has been very kind to us.....

Our predictions coming true.

Pakistanis in Sargodha just smashed a monument built towards the memories of PAF's fallen fighter pilots. From Pakistan Air Force's perspective, Sargodha is THE most important base.
Next stop: Cantonments.

The utter decimation, fratricide, mass culling, mayhem with the eventual resignation of its own people that Pakistan as a country does not deserve to exist should dawn upon them. Let them resort to cannibalism for all we care. Nothing less should satiate the victims of Pak terror we could not save.

Gents, I know it is confirmation bias to attribute certain events to what we feel.
Nevertheless, I do believe the Economic collapse of Pakistan is strongly linked to current politics and IK.
Read the whole on IK's arrest thread from previous tweet.
Aam aadmi now heading into Army cantonments and secure premises.

If this is indeed 4 Corps Commander's House in Lahore (I have my doubts), this is bloody unprecedented. Otherwise as well, the Pakistan Army soldier did not fire to stop the protestors from entering what's looks like an army property.
IK's supporters entering Lahore Cantonment. Imran Khan has done what no one thought could happen - Pakistanis turning against Pakistan Army. And that too, leadership of the Pakistan Army.

If the Paki Army does not act fast, Imran Khan will fulfill his dream of emulating and doing what Erdogan did in Turkey (effectively taming and controlling the Army)

Next Step will be for him to win the upcoming elections, win a 3/4th majority (which seems most likely at this stage), change the constitution, bring in the Presidential system of governance and drive the army into the barracks for ever.

Looks like Kaptaan's supporters have stormed the brownpant HQ in Pindi. Note this is different from the other protests in Lahore et al. Let's see if the PA umpires pull a "sudden death" on kaptaan. Kya khubsurat vatan hai, mashallah!

Quote from article:
The arrest of the 70-year-old Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman comes a day after the powerful army accused him of levelling baseless allegations against a senior officer of the spy agency ISI.
Almost all articles on Pakistani Army mindlessesly repeat the phrase "powerful army" - If they were that powerful and potent why did they lose four wars with India (including two surrenders)? PA is irresponsible or unaccountable but not powerful. The meanigless usage of that word does have a pschylogical impact on the readers that somehow PA is "powerful". Is it just me that is reading into that too much?

They are powerful because they might not be able to conquer Delhi, but a brigade can conquer PTV, fly a flag and give a speech.

Context matters. Even farts can be powerful.
