In Mumbai, ‘commercial building’ rises on plot AJL got for Nehru library - Indian Express

Image
Having remained vacant for three decades, a prime plot of land in suburban Mumbai, allotted by the Maharashtra government to Associated Journals Ltd in 1983 for building a Nehru memorial library and research centre, will now house a 11-storey office building.

According to building permissions granted by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to the company that once published the National Herald, the newspaper launched by Nehru, and Qaumi Awaz, the project is a “commercial building” comprising two levels of basement parking, an office and atrium on the ground floor and eleven floors of offices.

The proposal for a Nehru memorial library is not mentioned in the building permission documents.

The plot of land is located in Bandra, along the Western Express Highway. Measuring 3,478 sq m, it stands on part of a large plot earlier reserved for a hostel for Scheduled Caste students.

http://www.businesstoday.in/sectors/telecom/enforcement-directorate-chargesheets-telecom-minister-dayanidhi-maran-kalanithi-in-aircel-maxis-case/story/227981.html
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a charge sheet against former telecom minister Dayanidhi Maran, his brother Kalanithi and the latter's wife Kavery in the money laundering case related to the Aircel-Maxis deal in a special court on Friday.
K. Shanmugam, managing director of M/s South Asia FM Limited (SAFL), and two companies-M/s Sun Direct TV Private Limited (SDTPL) and SAFL-were also named as accused in the case, filed under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The charge sheet alleged that the proceeds of crime to the tune of Rs 742.58 crore were paid by Mauritius-based companies for Dayanidhi in SDTPL and SAFL, according to a press note.
The ED further alleged that the two firms were owned and controlled by Kalanithi and the money was utilised by the companies in their business. The charge sheet was filed before Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Judge O.P. Saini, who fixed next date for hearing on January 18. The ED stated that it had attached assets held by Dayanidhi, Kalanithi, Kavery and others equivalent to amount of proceeds of crime of Rs 742.58 crore under PMLA. The agency also claimed that Dayanidhi had obtained Rs 742.58 crore through companies of his relatives by camouflaging the proceeds of the crime as capital contribution in SDTPL and SAFL and committed the offence of money laundering in receiving the amount in the companies owned and controlled by Kalanithi and Kavery.
The ED added that the investigation had revealed that promoters of SDTPL are Kalanithi and Kavery, who were holding 80 per cent shares. "SDTPL is owned and controlled by Kalanithi Maran and Kavery Kalanithi being shareholders and in the Board of directors as chairman and director respectively," it said. The agency said that SDTPL had received proceeds of the crime amounting to Rs 549.03 crore for Dayanidhi in the guise of foreign investment, which has been consumed by the company in its business. The ED said that shareholders of SAFL were Kalanithi-controlled M/s Sun TV Network Limited, which holds 60-per cent stake, and two Mauritius-based companies.
In August 2014, the CBI too had chargesheeted the Maran brothers, Malaysian business tycoon T. Ananda Krishnan, Malaysian national Augustus Ralph Marshall and four companies-Sun Direct TV Pvt Ltd, Maxis Communication Berhad, South Asia Entertainment Holding and Astro All Asia Network PLC in the case. The CBI had earlier alleged in court that Dayanidhi had pressured and forced Chennai-based telecom promoter C. Sivasankaran to sell his stakes in Aircel and two subsidiary firms to Malaysian firm Maxis Group in 2006.

On a whatsapp group (high school friends), one die hard psedu sec, who is used to making emphatics assertions (without proof) is now saying that the present government is slow in auctioning mobile phone spectrum. He also alleges that the government is making it expensive for companies to bid for spectrum and hence.... ultimately leading poor expansion of mobile/internet services. He claims that under Kapil Zero loss sibbal communicating improved because 2g spectrum was given free.

I know this is not true.. any specific leads, links to debate this argument is appreciated

Ask the person to provide some substantial proof for the said delay. If coal auctions are a benchmark, I doubt this government would stop shy of earning money :-). It is quite possible that the operators are not ready to pay market price "now", since they may have some spare capacity which can ride them through until 2019.

The link below clearly shows the massive "zero loss" that was being incurred by GOI (and in turn Indian citizens) under Zero Sibal and the operators are already stressed with last year's auction. If telecom operators want to make profit with Sibalean prices of spectrum, they expect crony capitalism.

tell him to check how the spectrum owners sold part(30-45%) of their companies for 300-400% of the money they used to buy the spectrum. The low prices were never intended to be passed on to customers, it was only meant to increase the share prices of the companies and to make a quick buck to the owners.

EXCLUSIVE: Karti Chidambaram Holds Global Empire Through Benamis -Newindianexpress

Its a big article and I say please read it fully. I think PC's goose is cooked. I think hot pongal is eaten from periphery, now the eating has came to middle. Dynasty beware.

Movie quote: "Fact is, all lies, all evil deeds, they stink. You can cover them up for a while, but they don't go away."
Now, the New Indian Express has unearthed a devastating piece of evidence, which nails forever the lies of the father and son duo that Advantage Strategic Consulting Private Limited (Advantage), which has amassed huge wealth in India and in different countries, belongs not to them or their family, but to their friends. The new evidence proves that Advantage, which holds properties worth several hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of crores, may be even more, in India and outside, belongs to the Chidambaram family but held in benami names.
.......
Benami deals are not easy to prove as they are based on secret trust between the benamis and the real owner, leaving no need for documentation. But obviously Karti would not trust his benamis. Result, he ended up documenting his benami deals by getting his benamis execute Wills saying that after their lifetime, the shares of Advantage, which holds the global and local empire of his family, will go to his daughter. He had kept the Wills executed by them with himself. And that is now the proof against him. Wait a while for the interesting and intriguing details of the Wills.

SC proposes to cancel Aircel's 2G licence
The Supreme Court on Friday proposed to cancel the 2G licence granted to Aircel if the owner of Maxis, the Malaysia-based Anantha Krishnan, who bought the majority shares of the Indian telecom company, and his one-time key aide and Director Augustus Ralph Marshal fail to present themselves before it.

A bench headed by Chief Justice J.S. Khehar also restrained the transfer of 2G spectrum originally granted to Aircel to any other entity.

Proposing to cancel the licence, the court said that Krishnan and Marshal would not be allowed to frustrate the due course of law by avoiding to appear before the court.

The court said the Ministry of Information Technology would devise ways and means by which the 2G licence originally granted to Aircel could be provisionally transferred to any other service provider, so that subscribers might not suffer any adverse consequences.

The bench said that it would be open to Krishnan and Marshal to appear before the court in Delhi, failing which it would pass its proposed order.

The court made it clear that Krishnan and Marshal would not be permitted to raise any issue of financial loss, that they might suffer on account of the proposed cancellation of the 2G licence and spectrum granted to Aircel in November 2006.

http://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/ajay-singh-bought-spicejet-for-rs-2-ex-owner-maran-says-in-plea-116031200725_1.html
Ajay Singh paid Rs 2 to Kalanithi Maran to acquire the latter's controlling stake in SpiceJet. This was disclosed by Maran in his Delhi High court petition against SpiceJet and its current promoter Singh over a share transfer dispute.

Singh took control of the airline last January acquiring 58.46 per cent shares of the airline from Maran and his associate company Kal Airways. The acquisition price was not revealed to the stock exchange.

At the time of the transaction the SpiceJet stock was priced at Rs 16.30 a share. It closed at Rs 61.75 on Friday.

It was speculated Singh acquired control of the airline at a throwaway price because it was in was on verge of closure after defaulting on dues to lessors, airports and oil companies. Singh, who is also its founder-promoter, has steered SpiceJet back into profit, improved its market share and delivered 90 per cent plus loads.

But a dispute between the former and current owners of the airline has come to the fore and is being heard in the Delhi High Court.

In his petition Maran has claimed SpiceJet and Singh violated the share purchase agreement over issue of cumulative redeemable preference shares and failed to pay statutory income tax and service tax dues.

Maran claims he had deposited Rs 680 crore with the airline towards issue of share warrants and payment of dues but had to face summons from the income tax department as the company failed to take necessary action.

On Friday the Delhi High Court today asked Spicejet to pass a board resolution for issuing share warrants to Maran and Kal Airways according to the sale agreement of 2015 which led to change in ownership of the carrier. Justice Manmohan Singh asked both sides to come with the draft terms they are agreeable to and then he would pass orders on the petition moved by Maran seeking a stay on transfer of any shares of the airline.

The matter has been listed for orders on March 14.

According to a PTI report SpiceJet has refuted allegations and claimed that the warrants can be issued only after approval is received from Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). It also said there was no fear of transferring shares to a third party or to Maran as the shares have not yet been issued by the company.

A SpiceJet spokesperson did not immediately respond to an email query sent by this paper. However in a media statement released on Friday it said “a proceeding has been filed by Kalanithi Maran and Kal Airways before the Delhi High Court seeking various interim reliefs. No relief has been granted by the court and the matter is posted for further hearing.”
