Maybe a little history will help. Before the colonial raj, various kingdoms exerted (yes exerted) peace by making sure that the vassal states "supply" something that will keep them in check. For example, most Rajput vassal states of the Mughals were to put their princes in the "care" of the mughal court. In case the vassal states rebel, the rajput princes were to have their head lopped off. Put it crudely the "ba@ll$" of the rajput states were literally in the hands of the Mughal court (to cite a recent example).

Other state prior to the mughals also did that (the alliance of marriage was between equals only.)

Now in modern times, one can make sure that all the Paki politicians and Paki Jernails b@@ll$ are in India., but that is too crude and will not happen. So how the Indians hold the Paki nuts? One is to have a control over their lifeline - again in modern world, what is the "lifeline"? Energy. Water. Food. Medicines. Credit.

Hence all the talk about supplying Energy. Also Pakis are a curious species - they have 3 b@@ll$., one is held by America (the Army guys)., the other is in the hands of the religious fanatics ( the ummah log) and the third -the tiniest one- is the "liberal-democracy loving elite" who after Salman Taseer's shahidi have nowhere to go (since they will be crushed between the Army and the Ummah) and hence are ready to be held. Hence all the pappi-jhappi.

To put in anther way in the age of Residencies and Green cards. Where do the Paki elite children stay. Were do children of Indian political and in some cases Miltary elite stay. General Foneska of SL who prosecuted the war on LTTE mysteriously turned anti- Rajapaksa after visiting his 2 daughters in the US in the fall of 2009.

There is nothing new in this game and it is age old. Thats why people Modi with no family are ex-termly inconvenient.

I am just trying to understand the thought process behind such a strategy Shauryaji.....
I recognize the word "rational" is not popular on this board, when it comes to the TSPA. But, IMO they are a fairly rational bunch, who care for their lives the same way we do. When it comes to fight, they will run away to live another day - because they know, they will loose. They may live, but live a miserable existence, as hired guns for others, while their own society that feeds them rots. So yes, they have a choice, to live miserably or learn to live with a powerful India, which they can never defeat. If they continue to be pin pricks on the lines of 26/11, Delhi has so many response options on the table that even an inept PM of India could exercise them and put these guys in their place.

In an all out war, the best we can hope to achieve is give these guys a thrashing and maybe buy some peace for a decade or two but then what? Their idea of revenge for 1971, led them to support Khalistanis and the HM in Kashmir - in both cases they knew they could never wrest from India. A Musharraf started planning for revenge for Siachen, since 1982 to culminate in 1999 with Kargil. Again, a stupid plan that they hoped would succeed banking on the stupidity of Indian leaders. They were wrong. So, we can go back and forth this way. They can keep on dreaming. The result is 30K+ deaths in TSP in the last decade and we did not even do anything. All this for being hired guns and being stupid.

Fortunately, there are enough folks in TSP, who realize this now and desire a different trajectory. A trajectory of a negotiated half way house.

For those who say, let them stew in their own juices, I do not support such an unmanaged process. Remember TSP is our problem. We would rather fail controlling it than leave it uncontrolled and who knows, where its venom may fall.
Shauryaji.....From your reply, I understand that you are either trying to understand GOI's current pak policy or you are trying to formulate a compromise formula. What you are suggesting is a strategy, but what I am concerned about is how this will all be play out, i.e., every move on the checker board....... We have to understand that there are not just 2 players here, there are 6 players...GOI, indian people, paki civil society, pakis, TSPA and the jihadis.... this sure isn't going to be a manageable bunch and the pakis always play asymmetric....

what happens if the pakis take all the jazzia, pani, bijli and hit us back when they are stronger...

This strategy is like feeding and pampering a pit bull and hoping that it won't bite our kids..... the pakis haven't even been a honest dog to US all along.......

I am yet to see our present inept MMSji respond to the pin-prick on 26/11...or has he??

the only option "we think" we have is to fall on our feet and give them whatever they like and pray to them that they let us alone and our kids....... and that is what we are trying to do now... aren't we??

That is another way of saying Pakistan cannot help it! It is compelled by its addiction. Like to all addicts we should show them care and understanding.
