Anti-film rallies help LeT consolidation
Wilson John
24 September 2012

The continuing violence and disruptions across Pakistan over the controversial film on Prophet Mohammad is helping various extremist and terrorist groups to consolidate their support among the people, a trend which is likely to boost their ranks and coffers.

Most of the rallies against the film are being organised by Jamat-ud Dawa (JuD) and several of its allies, including Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ). JuD is the parent organisation of global terrorist entity, Lashkar-e-Tayyeba (LeT), accused of masterminding series of terrorist attacks in India, including the Mumbai 2008 attack, and of training and facilities attacks in different parts of the world. LeJ is a rabidly Sunni group which has been targeting Shias and other minorities in Pakistan as well as helping the Taliban and al Qaida to set up bases and shelter houses in Pakistan.

Of the several small and big groups active on the anti-film front particularly in Punjab, JuD is the most prominent and active. Not only has the group been organising rallies across key Punjab towns but has also been expanding the protests in other parts of Pakistan. The group has been using its extensive network of offices and supporters to attract crowds of several thousand at these rallies. It has also been using various social media tools like Facebook and Twitter to post date and venue of rallies as well as upload photos of rallies and speakers in real time with the help of smart phones and laptops.

Besides, JuD and LeT chief Hafiz Saeed has been setting the agenda for most of the rallies and the public discourse on the subject. His speeches are quickly uploaded on Facebook and other websites by a dedicated media team. Saeed's primary target has been the US. Saeed, at one rally, warned the US to pass a law making blasphemy an offence or else face closure of its consulates in Pakistan. Saeed even threatened to declare jihad against the US. Saeed's focus on the US is not surprising given the recent sanctions imposed by the US Treasury on some of his group's leaders, including his son, Talha Saeed.

JuD's approach to the protest rallies has been carefully thought out, unlike other smaller groups. JuD leadership's instructions to the cadre was to avoid violent at all costs-the group is acutely aware of the public anger at wanton destruction of property and violence on the streets. So careful has been the group that it even cancelled its rally in Islamabad when it came know that some `miscreant` groups were likely to trigger violence during the demonstrations. By staying away from violence, the group ensured that its rallies projected its support base, organisational capability and control.

JuD and other terrorist and militant groups have benefited in more ways than one by these events. In the past, JuD was able to generate not only funds for its activities but also attract more recruits by projecting itself as the champion of Islam and saviour of Pakistani people. In October 2005, when a massive earthquake seriously damaged several parts of Pakistan occupied Kashmir, JuD was prompt in carrying out rescue and relief activities in the remote areas. The group's activities attracted not only local attention but also a wider one, particularly among the Pakistani diaspora attracting generous amounts of donations. The enormous amount of support generated by JuD's rescue and relief measures in PoK helped the group to set up one of the best ambulance fleets in the country, establish a chain of medical centres and hospitals in different parts, create an allied network of medical professionals and generate enormous social capital. Roughly three years after the earthquake, the group carried out the Mumbai 2008 attack.

Besides funds and recruits, the group has two principle objectives in taking up such causes. One is to project itself as a social welfare or charity group and create goodwill and support among the people, particularly in Punjab and thus create a strong alibi against any serious attempt to disrupt its activities. Second is to promote its ideology which closely resembles that of Wahhabism, an extreme tenet promoted by Saudi Arabia, JuD's principle sponsors. This also fits in with the rising tide of Salafism across the Muslim world, including Pakistan.

Recent events also indicate the group's attempts to expand its role from a local guardian of Islamic cause to a global one. This inference could be drawn from JuD taking up the cause of Rohingya Muslims' plight in Myanmar and the blasphemous film. The group had taken up such `global` causes in the past but not with as much success in terms of popular support. By staying away from violence and belligerence, the group has been able to strengthen its support base among the people and at the same time project itself as a `vanguard` of Islam.

Both these projections, even if partially successful, have serious consequences. One, it gives the group a sense of immunity from any police or administrative action. Two, it makes it even more difficult for the state to plan any such action against the terrorist group. Three, it helps the group to widen its network across the world. Four, it attracts new recruits and funding sources for the cause. Five, it makes the group more useful to its patrons, Pakistan Army and ISI which continues to use it as an instrument of state policy. Six, it allows the group to consolidate its terrorist infrastructure, particularly its training camps, and become a source of training for global jihad. Seven, such projections give the group considerable political leverage and support.
LeT expanding its Social Media presence
Wilson John
27 September 2012

The extensive use of social media tools like Facebook and Twitter by banned terrorist group Jamat-ud Dawa (JuD) during the ongoing protests over the anti-Prophet film shows the terrorist group's growing capability in adopting modern communication tools to project and promote its ideology. It is also a significant indication of the group's rising ambitions of becoming a global voice for the Muslim community.

The terrorist group is relatively new to the social media - it began its Facebook and Twitter accounts sometime in May this year, about a year after it re-launched its website which was blocked following the Mumbai 2008 attacks. It has a dedicated YouTube channel by a user, jamatdawakhi. Although the website has since run into problems - the group terms it as a technical one -- the Twitter and Facebook accounts have attracted better attention in Pakistan. The group's Twitter account has 2932 followers and Facebook details show 5992 people talking about it and 4277 'Total Likes'. The Facebook is accessed mostly in Lahore, Punjab, and is popular in the age group of 18-24 years.

These are not alarming figures, but these are early days of the terrorist group's experiment with social media. The group has had mixed success with its website published in Persian, Urdu and English. The website promoted its ideology, made its publications available online and, before December 2001, projected its jihadi activities in Kashmir and other parts of India.

After the first round of bans on the group's activities in December 2001, the group pulled out its jihadi articles and speeches and began projecting itself as a social welfare and charity organisations. This change reflected Hafiz Saeed's ploy to mislead the international community by disassociating himself from Lashkar-e-Tayyeba and renaming Markaz-ud Dawa as Jamaat-ud Dawa (JuD) which remains the group's name despite several other rounds of bans. Markaz was set up in Kunar province of Afghanistan in the last days of the Afghan Jihad and was largely inspired by Dr Abdullah Azzam, a radical Palestinian ideologue who conceptualized both Hamas and al Qaida. Azzam was a teacher to Osama bin Laden during the latter's university days.

The terrorist group used the website not only for promotion but also to attract funds and recruits to its cause. Frequent posts on the website called for donations and contributions to the cause of jihad in Kashmir and in India. These posts not only gave details of bank accounts but also contact numbers of relevant persons at LeT's headquarters at Muridke, near Lahore. There is substantial evidence to show that the website generated substantial funding from the US, UK, Europe and Gulf countries.

The website was also used as a recruitment platform for foreign recruits. Several foreigners travelled to LeT camps after visiting the website and contacting LeT members responsible for external operations. This unit was headed by Sajid Mir, one of the prime accused in the Mumbai attacks. The website was run by the group's department of information and propaganda which interacted with the media as well as promoted the group and its activities.

The re-launched website has, however, run into some glitches but the terrorist group has another proxy web presence in the form of http://www.difaepakistan.com/index.php, a website of Difa-e-Pakistan, an umbrella organisation of 40-odd extremist and terrorist groups in Pakistan, headed by Hafiz Saeed. In fact, the home page opens with an Open Letter to Parliamentarians by Prof. Hafiz Saeed. The website makes no bones about its vision--'' "We envisage defending Pakistan, the only ideological nation carved in the name of Islam with our wealth and Lives. Pakistan stands as the beacon of unity of Ummah, on "La Ilaha Ilallah" (There is no God but ALLAH), the bedrock of our faith". A quick look at the contents of the site establishes it as JuD's mirror website. Difa-e-Pakistan also has its own Facebook and Twitter accounts.

It is the group's adoption of social media networks to promote jihad or violence which needs to be examined and closely monitored. The Facebook page gives a detailed explanation of the group's principle mission objective--''Knowledge is the pre-requisite for Practice, which prepares an individual to spread the message of Islam called 'Da'wah' which if attacked or is threatened should be defended and protected by the 'Ibadah' and Obligation of 'Jihad' this is precisely what can define our way today, and for the generations of Muslims to come''.

In one of its objectives, jihad fi Sabilillah. the posting says, '' 'JUD' believes in the 'JIHAD' of Prophet Muhammad (Salallahu Alayhi Wassalam) as ordained in Quran and his Sunnah. 'JIHAD' was the protected 'Islam' and helped its message to reach beyond oppression and slavery that was imposed on the world and which physically threatened the existence of every Muslim and the state of Medina itself… Therefore, 'JUD' considers the struggle of Kashmiri, Palestinians, Afghani people as legitimate against occupational forces of India, Israel and NATO. ''.

There are several references to jihad in the postings along with pictures of weapons and other images denouncing India, US and Israel. On the YouTube, the group has several promotional videos as well as speeches of Hafiz Saeed.

These sites are being used to generate funds for the terrorist group. For instance, one of JuD's sister organisation, Falah-e-Insaniat Foundation (http://www.fif.org.pk/?page_id=505) openly seeks donations on its website. The Foundation office is located at 4 - Lake Road Chuburgi, Lahore, Pakistan (54000), the same as that of JuD where Hafiz Saeed and his son, Talha Saeed run a mosque and madrasa complex, Masjid al Qadsia. The foundation too has its independent Facebook and Twitter accounts.

The group has been, in the meantime, expanding its footprint in social media by projecting issues which strike a chord of sympathy and support not only from Pakistanis but Muslims across the world. For instance, the group took up the cause of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar and posted doctored photographs of mutilated bodies to project repression of the Muslims. The group even posted a news item stating that it had dispatched a delegation to Bangladesh to get a first hand account.

The terrorist group's most recent cause was the anti-Prophet film. It used Facebook and Twitter to organise protest rallies across Punjab and Karachi and posted real-time images and audio of the rallies and speakers. This event showed the growing capability of the group to work the social media to its advantage-generating crowd, monitoring the progress of the rallies and projecting the group's leaders and their ideologies across the net.

Do these developments indicate an enhanced threat from LeT?

The following reasons might indicate a greater potential of threat to India and other countries:

1. Recruitment- The group will be able to attract new recruits to its fold without actually setting up a recruiting office as it used to do in the past. LeT used to run about 2500 madrasas and mosques in Pakistan, all of which doubled as recruitment centres. With social media tools, the group will be able to at least source a portion of its recruits through online recruitment, particularly when most of its followers on Facebook and Twitter are young. The social media will also enable the group to reactivate its recruitment activities in other parts of the world, more specifically in South Asia. A study done by Pakistan Institute of Peace Studies recently showed that indoctrination through published materials was one of the key reasons for many of the jihadis to join the terrorist groups.

2. Fund raising- The group has already started generating funds through these media sources. Although exact quantum of donations and contributions are difficult to come by, rough estimates, going by the past record, could run into a few millions. A substantial part of this funding is generated in the West as well as Gulf.

3. Networking- The social media tools will enable the terrorist group to establish new alliances and networks across the cyber world, sharing information as well as propaganda material quite freely. Such a network, based largely on common agenda of muslim repression and revenge, can facilitate recruitment, gathering of intelligence, setting up safe houses and planning of terror attacks.

4. Planning and executing attacks- The US-born Yemeni al Qaida leader, Anwar al-Awlaki, used online resources to recruit and indoctrinate foreigners to carry out terrorist attacks in the US. For instance, Faisal Shahzad, a Pakistani U.S. citizen confessed to attempting to car bomb Times Square after being inspired Awlaki's online lectures. A US Department of Homeland Security 2010 study of terrorist groups use of Facebook concluded that the groups use the social media tool as a means to share operational and tactical information, as a gateway to extremist sites and other online extremist resources, as a propaganda tool and as an intelligence tool for remote reconnaissance.

5. Propaganda- These tools can be handy to disseminate propaganda to a wider audience. The group can upload misleading videos, reports and articles to generate anger and violence against specific entities or countries. For instance, LeT's anti-India and anti-US slogans and speeches have strengthened these feelings among the masses in Pakistan. An increasing number of jihadi groups are now using these social media tools to publish and preach extreme ideologies and actions. There is an increasing possibility various such groups coming together by sharing resources and links creating a universe of jihadist forums. A tweet from an Egyptian protester summed up the power of social media for such groups: ''We use Facebook to schedule the protests, Twitter to coordinate, and YouTube to tell the world."

Aditya,

A good majority of Pakistani people are sadistic people. They enjoy killing, they love the sight of blood and they rejoice torture of other living beings. It is sad what Pakistan has become in just over six decades.

They were no different before six decades. The violence initiated by Muslim league in 1930's and 1940's is one example. The only difference is that during those times it was swords and sticks; now it is Kalashnikovs and IEDs.

And, we are determined to give them concession after concession, even contemplating withdrawal from Siachen, in the fond hope that these barbarians can be overwhelmed with love and generosity and turned into good human beings.

In essence the US is performing the role that UK had in providing sustenance for terrorist groups.
All three firms are big US entities and can be controlled by US but appear not to be so.

I dont know if this is OT. But I went to Best Price today, which is owned by Walmart and some Indian company. What caught my eye is the sign on their meat department which said 'we sell only Halal meat'. When I am in US I avoid Halal and Kosher meat like plague, the reason being these are not inspected by any Govt inspectors. Now how come in India which has majority of Hindus a company is allowed to sell only Halal meat (which means Allah's name has been invoked, the animal was killed in the most cruel way by a pious muslim) and offer no other choice? Is it even legal? It is time Hindus forced these companies to offer alternate choices like Jatka meat or boycott these stores.

Standing alone as a Pure Islamic Pakistani
http://dawn.com/2012/09/27/standing-alo ... pakistani/
am in the news everyday. I appear separate from rest of the world. If they made me stand amongst thousands, I would still appear separate from the others. This is why whichever land I step on, I am asked to stand alone and wait for my turn, which always comes in the very end. I often wonder why the eyes of the whole world are so focused on me, always assuming me to be the risk factor. No matter what happens, in any corner of the world, it all somehow eventually leads to me, in one way or another.
I am just a simple, illiterate person who doesn’t even have access to schools and colleges, the universities are for the big shots anyway. Forget my previous generations, even my following generations can not hope to access those universities. But now, people are starting to take notice of my abilities. Oh, let them come to me and just ask, I can turn an entire city into a mound in a matter of moments. In fact, there is no one who can possibly be as “honourable” as me, as good and true a Muslim as I am. No, he cannot be found in any corner of the world, not even in Saudi Arabia. And it doesn’t even matter if I cannot understand Arabic; despite that my knowledge of the “true” faith surpasses anybody else’s.If America gives us a visa, none of us would hesitate. Who wants to live in this country? What kind of place is this to raise a family in anyway? At least, education is freely available to everyone abroad. The governments are responsible for providing livelihoods to their citizens. Most of all, the menace of load shedding is not present there, at least one can sleep soundly at night. You do agree, though, that we are hardworking people. We can manage to get on with just washing dirty dishes. And about Islam? Well, it is a universal religion. There are mosques in every corner of the world, no one stops us from practicing our faith. And why worry about Saudi Arabia? Whenever there is a call, we will go and get our sins forgiven. Apart from that, may be its a good thing that Saudi Arabia refuses to give its nationality to us Pakistanis. Those who were somehow mistakenly granted Saudi nationality are getting beheaded anyway; if its not the head that’s being chopped off, its either a hand or a foot. So what if we don’t know Arabic, we know English and so our desired destinations are no lower than America, Canada, etc. You do know that we do not let anyone infringe upon our rights. If they do, we know how to obtain our rights, no matter where we are in the world. You probably also know how merciful we are; feeding the hungry, caring for the sick, lending a hand to the poor is all a part of our nature. I wonder why the world ignores our goodness and insists on focusing on our evils, associating the mistakes of a few people with 180 million innocent people. All these terrorists that keep blowing up places with bombs are just a small group of people. I am sure that our enemies are the ones really behind these malicious groups of people. Our enemies just cannot see this country prosper. Why give us all a bad name just because a small group of people insist on destroying our image?

Because the evil these few do, far outweighs the miniscule good that the large majority might be capable of doing but doesn't.

And most Pakis, but for the rigors of existence in a terrorist state, would have joined the small few if they had the opportunity.

Regarding the PRC-PORK axis, that axis exists since PORK was born to the world. Of course any relationship between a pig-breeding nation and pig-eating nation is going to be strategic. Such strategic relationships should be encouraged, why spend energy fighting formation of such relationships or even getting dis-heartened!

'We don't deliver to Pakistan': What ice cream company boss wrote to local Muslim customer who asked about pork-based gelatin
A century-old ice cream company in a small Montana town has been branded 'racist' after the president's told a local Muslim customer on Facebook: 'We certainly don't deliver to Pakistan.'

The row began on September 21 when a customer from Sheridan, Wyoming, posted on the Facebook page for Wilcoxson's Ice Cream of Livingston, Montana, and asked if the company used pork-based gelatin.

The Facebook user said he was Muslim and enjoyed Wilcoxson's flavors asked which ones she should eat to avoid pork products.

Company president Matt Schaeffer replied: 'We don't deliver outside Montana, certainly not Pakistan.'

The customer was indignant.

'What are u talking about!!??? I think.ur comment is rude to assume i live in Pakistan,' he wrote. 'I live in Sheridan but just because of your ignorance i wont buy your ice cream and definetly wont recommend it.'
paki caught in act is now pretending to be defiant :rotfl:
now all other paki birathers jumped in
Angry comments poured in on the company's Yelp review page.

'People of all religions and backgrounds love to eat ice cream -- but people of all religions and background don't support Wilcoxson's asinine bigotry and discrimination,' one user said. 'Wilcoxson's is a horrible company run by hateful people.'

'There you have it. Nothing bogus here,' another Yelp reviewer said. 'Just a plain racist islamaphobic establishment. Definitely wouldn't get anything from here.'

None of angry commenters seemed to be from anywhere near Montana or other places where the ice cream is available.

icecream is not mentioned in the book nor the had(gg)is. So its not halal in any form: either pork based or anyother based.

Govts, NGOs fail to match disaster scale
KARACHI - Governments and humanitarian agencies have miserably failed in providing quick and adequate relief in the worst flood affected districts of Sindh and Balochistan, which resulted in increased post-flood human losses in spread of diseases. Over two million flood affected people are homeless and living without any relief service as post-flood diseases are taking lives of 15 to 20 flood affected people daily in both the provinces. This was disclosed in a flood situation report titled with ‘Flood 2012-Situation Analysis-Gaps and Issues’, prepared by Peoples Commission on Floods, the network of flood affected communities, their representatives and civil society activists. The report, released here on Wednesday, stated that the governments and their specific agencies including NDMA, PDMAs and DDMs miserably failed

I cannot demand that people change their viewpoints, but let me point out how we as a collective on the forum fall into the Pakistan-India equal equal paradigm even as we protest that this is wrong.

Pakistanis always use Indian examples to compare with similar things in Pakistan to say how "both countries have the same problems". I have seen a variant of this in which a Pakistani will say, with reference to the Adarsh scam, "Yes our own khakis are greedy and corrupt just like Indian khakis. It is the people of both countries who suffer as a result".

Here on BRF we make a big story (taken out of the very media that we otherwise criticize) that a 80 year old SM Krishna was trying to impress 34 year old Khar and failed. This gives the Paki an opporuinity to say "Yes. our own politicians are corrupt womanisers, just like SM Krishna. The people of both countries suffer as a result". You need not like SM Krishna or Kangress, but what we are doing is scoring a self goal in the guise of fun and humor on the Shitistan thread.

As an aside if you can show me two out of ten 80 years olds who can actually hold an erection for more than 30 seconds I will eat my words. I think we need to call off this romance with Khar nonsense. It seems like whether it is SMK, Zardari or Bilawal we all like to bring up and discuss the topic of romance with Khar. To that extent Pakis have already scored a psy-victory over the media and BRF too. Think about that.

Pakistani community in USA to project message of tolerance through Ashiq-e-Rasool Conferences:Sumsam
Pakistani community living in United States will project the message of tolerance, peace and brotherhood of Islam through holding Ashiq-e-Rasool conferences in different cities of USA with a view to highlight the true message of Islam. This was stated by Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Syed Sumsam Ali Bokhari while speaking to a large gathering at Ashiq-e-Rasool Conference on Thursday here after meeting President Asif Ali Zardari, who is here to attend 67th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations

Damn! Now i have to cancel my weekend plans of going to the movie theater and probably stay indoors, lest I get to be on the receiving end of the 'love of the prophet'.

Unless someone new has moved in, I can guess roughly who the Pakistani is. There was only one Paki family from there in that town.

From The Hindu dated September 28, 1962
President Ayub Khan had given the impression at a press conference in London that Mr. Nehru had agreed to a ministerial level meeting on the Farakka Barrage scheme in West Bengal. The External Affairs Ministry has clarified that the Indian Government's position is that the subject should be first discussed at the technical level to facilitate which there should be an exchange of technical data between the two countries. The feeling in New Delhi is that the problem should be dealt with only as a technical problem and not as a political one, which it would become, if a ministerial level meeting was held before the technical investigations were completed.
Pakistan (and Muslim League before it) have always been misleading the rest of the world and lying about everything. The above is another example.

Duspercenti's angst maybe over the fact that with Hina babe in charge of Bilawal he'd lose his chance of getting his hands on the Swiss riches.

This is Mughal aristocracy debauchery at its best.

Stock up some popcorn and beer. Just spare a thought for our poor beloved Foreign Minister who thought his natty sartorial sense would be enough to get Hina interested. :-)
Zardari's 2-volt, 1.5 milliampere brain cannot handle such complex planning tasks. The only reason he is opposed to the lovebirds' union is he's eyeing Hina for himself, and probably was trying to get her in the sack when his skirtpasand son wore his X-ray glasses on her and figured she was worth toying with.

Hina baby, having slightly higher operating voltage in the skull, has her own plans for getting at bibi's stash in Swissaland. Part of that plan is to sleep with the partyanimal with connections, rather than the senile old coot who could get bumped off anytime. Babe figures it would be useful to have her hubby around until she gets at the loot. What's the friggin' use if she marries the senior skirtpasand, becomes a widow and gets stuck in is-loo, when she could be cavorting in the Alps?

Besides, babe figures, marrying the papa zardari would lead to domestic political compulsions screwing foreign policy all the time, something bakistan hardly needs at this point.

Still waiting for the bear-hug - Vladimir Radyuhin in The Hindu
So, the real reason behind Putin calling-off Pakistan visit is that Putin never promised to come in the first place.
Russian diplomats say that Mr. Putin’s visit was indeed discussed but insist it was not cancelled simply because it was never confirmed in the first place.

“Russia agreed to take part in the quadripartite meeting, but we never said Mr. Putin will lead the Russian delegation,” said Mr. Zamir Kabulov, head of the 2nd Asia Department in the Russian Foreign Ministry, which looks after South Asia and Iran.

Pakistani leaders are themselves to blame for the flop. According to Mr. Kabulov, the sides had readied themselves for signing just three non-binding memoranda of understanding — on the expansion of the Pakistan Steel Mills, and on cooperation in energy and education. They are largely a reiteration of agreements signed last year when Mr. Zardari visited Moscow. The Kremlin was apparently concerned that the visit was going to be long on ceremony and short on substance. {The PPP wants all world leaders to visit Pakistan to boost its sagging fortunes. The desperation for Mr. Man Mohan Singh to visit TSP is also due to this. Zardari forced himself upon Man Mohan Singh by suddenly and inexplicably visiting Ajmer Sharif to extract a reciprocal visit fro our PM. He was willing to spend upto a million dollars for this political masterstroke.}
Those in India who are suspicious of rapprochement between Russia and Pakistan need not rejoice at Mr. Putin’s failure to visit Islamabad. Pakistan is central to Russia’s strategy for stabilisation of Afghanistan after the pullout of U.S.-led coalition forces in 2014.

“Our own experience in the past and the track record of others in recent years has taught us that the problem of Afghanistan cannot be resolved without the constructive involvement of Pakistan and Iran,” said Mr. Kabulov, who is also the Russian President’s special envoy for Afghanistan.

Moscow and Islamabad share similar perceptions on the post-2014 scenarios for Afghanistan. Both believe in regional solutions for Afghanistan and both are strongly opposed to Washington’s plans to retain military bases in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of the coalition forces. Improved political and economic ties with Pakistan should also help Moscow counteract U.S. plans to shut out Russia from Central Asia, which is the goal of the New Silk Road project promoted by Washington.
The Russian diplomat did not rule out that at some point in future Moscow may supply anti-terror and anti-drug trafficking hardware to Pakistan even though it is not on the list of countries where Russian exporters can sell weapons.

“Such supplies may come when we achieve a balanced picture of bilateral relations and have big civilian contracts in the pipeline,” he said.

He stated though that Russia’s engagement with Pakistan would not be at the expense of Moscow’s relations with New Delhi.

Grapevine says Non-Aligned Movement summit in Iran where a number of dignitaries visited caused a big Khujli in Pakistan which is pretty much a no-go area for any head of state recently. The only people who go there are second in command and jernail types -- usually to place demands or dole out threats.

I feel that we have not understood or appreciated this part of Paki psyche well. We look at their behavior, try to fit our worldview and get confused. No foreign leader visiting their country or no International sports events (or events of any sort) in their country seems to have stuck a raw nerve that they are trying to correct and compensate. You might ask "So what, they continue to hold the world ransom, get away with their Paki-ness and continue to charge a tax on the rest of the civilized world and through a mixture of begging and intimidation get their way" -- which would not be a correct reading of the situation. This does really bother them. Hence the Bhaichara with MMS.

Let me do a Pisko post about something else soon, about which we dont understand their pisko all that well.

When Zardari was talking about polio eradication in Pakistan at the UN -- remember that the telebunnies have declared no polio vaccination and the government has done nothing about it and polio cases in Pakistan has surged. Saudi Barbaria is about to institute polio vaccination for all Paki pilgrims (Hakeem, does this work?) and if this goes on for a few years the rest of the world might require vaccination certification from Pakis if they hope to travel.

So Zardari was trying to dress it up by tying it to GOAT (global offensive against terror) and appealing for international help ityadi. When he spoke, fella behind him started pulling out various photos of Benazir administering polio drops to kids.

Neem Hakim Khatra Jaan but Naat in Pakistan
Intellectual bankruptcy — Said Kaam ran Hash mum
Later that week, she went to the studio and contrary to what she was led to believe, immediately realised that she was not the only expert invited in the programme. There were two more guests along with her to share their views in the show. One of them was a local ‘hakeem’ who had discovered a new ‘treatment’ for Hepatitis C and next to him was his patient, an automobile mechanic, who was cured of the ‘infection’. The patient was there to support the ‘local’ treatment of Hakeem sahib and had brought some ‘evidence’ to prove his point. It made her a little nervous; she must have wished she could leave instantly; nevertheless, presumably, she did not want to be rude and embarrass the host. Hence, she decided to stay until the end of the discussion.he programme started with a brief introduction about the rising incidence of Viral Infection followed by a short documentary on the prevalence of liver disease in Pakistan. Till that moment, she was oblivious about the real agenda of the programme and was totally taken aback by the host when he asked the hakeem his first question, “Tell me about your new discovery? I am sure the whole world would be pleasantly surprised by your treatment plan for the illness with 100 percent success rate. I also want to know how an ordinary citizen of Pakistan without any ‘significant medical background’ unearthed a simple, an inexpensive and effective cure for a chronic condition like Hepatitis C.”
In response, the exalted Hakeem sahib described on live television in his broken language that his formula was actually straightforward: all you had to do was to boil some bay leaves in water for 20 minutes and then drink the solution for 30 days straight in the evening without a break. If you followed the regime as directed by him then, with God’s blessing, your Hepatitis C will be completely cured. Immediately after his remarks, the motor mechanic flashed his results of the latest blood tests in front of the camera that were negative for the infection. The Infection Disease consultant was shocked and speechless to hear all this.
What is wrong with this picture? Who is responsible for this insane behaviour? And why is this inanity promoted in our news programmes with the pretence of freedom of information? Obviously, the above-mentioned story is not wholly based on facts but is close enough to reality to draw some basic conclusions. We know it is not the story of the hakeem or Agha Waqar — another ‘genius’ who invented the motor engine that runs on water — or any other partially literate enthusiast who struggles to create something big in a short period of time. This is also not the story of the Infectious Disease specialist or Professor Hoodbhoy or Dr Samar Mubarakmand, who have spent years in research and education and have developed expertise in their respective fields. This is, in fact, the story of some semi-educated, questionably talented, doubtfully sincere and certainly immature television anchors who have discovered the Agha Waqars and hakeems, along with many other super natural healers and have promoted them through their prime time broadcasts to share their patriotism. Then, this is also the story of our naive and broken civil society that does not protest strongly against their humiliation by medical quacks and pseudo-scientists. In the end, this is also the story of the absolute lack of understanding displayed regularly by some media personnel about the process of scientific innovation in the modern day, the concept of peer reviewed professional journals and the procedure of even the approval of a research study.

One more Piskology post. We think that Pakis care for their H&D which is not really accurate. Pakis care for their visible H&D. Which is a whole different ballgame than just caring for their H&D.

In effect what I am saying is, you can GUBO them in private, they would not object, but if you yell at them in public, they will go all JEEEEEEEHHHHAAAAARRRRDDDD!!! on you.

There are several examples. One of them is Kargil. They dont care that they got their musharraf handed to them, because there is nothing to prove that they got their H&D violated. Hence the usual claims of "Oh! Indians had more casualties!! (which is actually untrue, Apparently it is one of the very few instances in the history of human warfare where people on fortified positions in mountains suffered more casualties) Or "We might have retreated in Kargil, but we internationalized the Kashmir issue!!".

The flip side is Siachen. They do feel a massive loss of H&D because Indians are there, sitting pretty. You can read about it in the newspapers, you can look at maps, you can see that they got their musharraf handed to them. Hence the single minded effort in trying to ease that jhappad on their face. Another example is drone strikes. As long as drone strikes were not reported, and were conducted in secret, Pakis were okay with it. At that time it suited Unkil to keep it a secret (questionable legal status, dont want to tell the yahoos what was hitting them) and Pakis were happy with the GUBO.

Now it benefits Ombaba politically by leaking every drone attack to the press ("He is a strong president and keeps us safe!" wins many votes in Massa). So with more drone attack news leaking out, the protest from the Pakis are getting shriller. About sovirginity violation. Same thing with OBL raid. They flew in, landed, shot the b*stard and took his body, all when PAF and Army were sleeping. The instant reaction was NATO route blockade, and cry about loss of H&D. This reaction was so intense, that nobody in Pakistan even asked "How did OBL live here for so many years" (well this reaction is understandable), surprisingly they didnt even ask "We sheltered enemy no 1 of world's sole superpower, now what will happen to us?*"

Also what rankles them is 1971 -- which supposedly influenced a generation of Khakis hell bent on foisting terror on India. Because it cannot be denied that they got their musharraf kicked.

We should use this knowledge of "Okay to GUBO in private/Not okay to be slapped in Public" to our advantage. This also meshes with their Khujli of no Cricket team or foreign dignitary visit. They are okay with their country going down the pakistan with internal refugees, polio, yahoos roaming around everywhere, power cuts and no economy to speak of, but the moment they dont have visible trappings of a normal country, they feel violated.

*Many people misinterpret it as Pakistan's strength at blackmailing unkil. I dont agree 100% atleast a substantial part of it is just blindness caused due to grief/outrage/denial due to public musharraf kicking.
