Windfall for Pakistan, to get first call on US military leftovers in Afghanistan

Along with the Taliban, Pakistan will be a massive gainer from America’s troop drawdown from Afghanistan by end-2014. A top-level US official, speaking off-the-record, has told Business Standard that Pakistan will get first call on all the American military equipment that costs too much to be transported back to the US.

Washington believes it is obligated to Islamabad for bringing the Taliban to the negotiating table at Qatar, for discussions aimed at reducing violence in Afghanistan, which would smoothen the American troop drawdown this year and the next. Furthermore, Washington relies on Pakistan for overland transit from Afghanistan to Karachi, where heavy equipment is loaded onto cargo vessels bound for the US.

Uzbekistan, which also provides transit routes to the US, had earlier sought to buy the surplus US equipment in Afghanistan. But routing through Uzbekistan, and then over a road and rail network in Central Asia and Russia called the Northern Distribution Network, is 4-5 times more expensive and time consuming than transiting through Pakistan. Washington has now decided conclusively in favour of Pakistan.

An earlier report in The Washington Post had estimated that the US military would leave behind some $7 billion worth of defence equipment, one-fifth of what is deployed in Afghanistan. US military officials tell Business Standard that aircraft, heavy weapons, vehicles and equipment are likely to be repatriated to the US. Much of what Pakistan will benefit from will be ammunition, vehicles, construction material, air-conditioners, etc.

Much more could be left behind if the situation deteriorates; Taliban resistance would determine what could feasibly be transported. Sceptics in New Delhi point out that Pakistan controls the spigot of violence.

It has not been revealed how much Pakistan would pay for the equipment left behind, but US officials say it would be a fraction of the real value. Given that the US is paying billions of dollars each year to build up the Afghan National Army (ANA) and Afghan National Police (ANP), it remains unclear why Washington has not given Kabul the first call on the surplus equipment being left behind.

Buyers seek wheat imports from Black Sea’

HAMBURG : Buyers in Pakistan, in past years a wheat exporter, are holding talks about imports of wheat from the Black Sea region, European traders said on Wednesday.

“Pakistan has been a wheat exporter for several seasons, but there is belief the country’s crop this year was not as good as expected,” one European trader said. “Pakistani buyers have returned to the market as importers and are holding talks about buying wheat from the Black Sea region in particular.”

There was unconfirmed trade talk that about 50,000 tonnes of Russian and Romanian wheat has already been sold to Pakistan at about $292 a tonne C&F for August shipment to Karachi.

Trade talk was of another consignment purchased from Russia and Ukraine. reuters

The Punjab prisons department, however, claimed that the rumours were part of a malicious propaganda and that the prisoner had only suffered a stroke.

This applies equally to Pakistan and its precursor, the Muslim League. The Muslim league was unreasonable and it was unreasonable because it had an agenda and knew it could get there by just being unreasonable because the others then go a few extra miles to propitiate. It is not enough being just unreasonable; one has to also back it up with violence. That is exactly what Muslim League did as well. The message is simple: Pander my unreasonableness or else . . . The same traits were then carried over into that illegal and artificial construct called Pakistan. Every Pakistani ruler has followed the same approach to India for the last 66 years. The Taliban, by their fierce salafi ideological moorings, can only be expected to be irreconcilable, impractical and adamant. They also back it up with extraordinary violence. They have a supporter in Pakistan with similar approach. There is no way one can instill any sense in both of them. My host was Faisal Naveed Asif, CEO of Scaled Aviation Industries, whom I had met on the judges’ panel at a business plan competition in a local university just a few weeks ago. Before the event, when Faisal introduced himself as the CEO of the only private-sector, certified, aircraft manufacturer in the whole of Middle East and South Asia

Tried to check for a web site of this compamy, but mashallah, they only believe in having a chehra-e-kitab page. All composite body, built in a hangar, no major manufacturing equipment visible, fit and finish really clean, fantastic avionics and all flights without a hitch.

Seems too good to be true? But I had to remind myself that Pakistan is the only Muslim nuclear weapon
State in the world, with the fastest growing arsenal.

The not so pleasant whistle-blowing saga, which the US has become caught up in, continues to make headlines the world over. In its latest episode, Edward Snowden, the former National Security Agency operative, who exposed US eavesdropping on tens of thousands of emails and other private conversations transmitted electronically, has left Hong Kong where he had been based when he began his stunning revelations and turned up in Moscow. His next destination is uncertain with Ecuador considering his asylum request while Cuba is another possibility. The Venezuelan president has also said that he would consider an asylum request for him.

Mr Snowden’s fate then hangs in the balance. The US is desperate that he be extradited to its shores to face trial for treason. But whether it succeeds or not in getting hold of Mr Snowden, whose story came to the world via a correspondent at The Guardian, remains to be seen. The fact is that the damage has been done. Mr Snowden’s revelations about accessing electronic communications illegally and tapping into internet hubs around the world have exposed American hypocrisy. As a self-proclaimed champion of human rights, the US has always stated that it upholds the right to privacy and has criticised other countries, including China, for prying into the lives of citizens. Being caught doing so has left many faces blushing bright red in Washington.

What we have heard first from Wikileaks, and now from Mr Snowden, gives us an insight into the world of international espionage and politics. Admittedly, most countries of the world are involved in some form of spying, but the fact that the US was involved in it at such a massive scale, as well as its attitude, which shows that it feels it can get away with whatever it pleases, even if it is illegal, is what has come under much criticism. The question now is whether what we have been hearing will change the reality for all of us.

For smooth running of the facility, a notice may also be put up there for users that they have to keep the toilet clean after using it.

Pakistan: Update. At the National Assembly. Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan informed the National Assembly on Thursday that a four-member committee of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had been constituted to probe treason charges against former President Musharraf.

Nisar said the investigating team comprises of two directors and two additional director-generals of the FIA, and that the team would complete its investigations over treason charges against Musharraf and submit a report to the government soon. He also said that the committee would hold meetings with him on a weekly basis.

At the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court adjourned the hearing of the treason case against Musharraf for an indefinite period to hold consultations about setting up a special court to hear the case.

The Court rejected a plea to order the formal arrest of Musharraf citing that no formal charges against the former president had been put before the court.

Comment: The parliament and the Supreme Court are moving rapidly on the treason case which promises to be a showpiece of the first part of Prime Minister Sharif's administration.

The Supreme Court also heard testimony on Wednesday that the Attorney General in the Pakistan People's Party-led government defied a direct order of the Court. The Chief Justice, leading the Court, ordered the government to send a letter to the Swiss government to re-open a criminal investigation against President Zardari for money laundering.

Musharraf had terminated the Swiss investigation as part of a political amnesty deal with Benazir Bhutto and her husband, Zadari in 2007. The Court found Musharraf's orders to be unconstitutional, including the deal with Bhutto, hence it directed the Attorney General to re-open the case.

What the Court learned this week is that the Attorney General wrote a letter as directed on 5 November 2012, but followed it up on 22 November with a secret letter directing the Swiss to ignore the earlier letter because Zardari has immunity from prosecution as president.

The Chief Justice said those involved in the second letter would face consequences.

Comment: The new government and the Supreme Court have aligned in order to establish the rule of law and to bring justice to Musharraf and the Zardari-led Pakistan People's Party. Both Nawaz Sharif and Chief Justice Chaudhry personally, along with many others, were abused by Musharraf and Zardari.

The position of the Pakistan government is that a sitting President is immune from prosecution. It is unclear whether that includes the investigation process before a complaint is filed. In any event, Zardari's immunity ends this fall when his term expires.

So Badmash is fixing "Pakistan Khappay" Zardari and Mushy as a two for one deal.

^ That's why the departure date, the mode of departure and the secrecy surrounding it are important for Zardari if he were not to end up in solitary confinement at Kot Lakpat once again. He cannot wait till the very last moment because he might simply be prevented from leaving. We are going to see some real spectacle here, my gut feeling.

Scaled Aviation was one screwdriver turn away in being the very first airplane made in Pakistan by a private aircraft manufacturer!

Sorry, not convinced yet. Are the engine and avionics made in Pakistan ? What about the fibre glass material? If not, simply assembling the components does not make it a Pakistani aeroplane. Its like calling a Suzuki, a Pakistani car.
Please convince me it is not a hobbyist kit plane, assembled in Pakistan. Sorry for being cynical but have been around a long, long time in Pakistan.

This man should be honoured by the Pakistani government with the highest civilian award. He is like the next Dr. A.Q. Khan.

He proudly narrates the story in which he turned down the offer by an Arab prince to come and build his factory in the Middle East. He was offered anything he would want along with state citizenship, but he refused and chose to pursue his dream in Pakistan.

{He would have been the FIRST Paki to be granted citizenship of his four fathers and could consider himself to be more Arap than the Paki Araps!}

The way the blog is written, one is under the impression that this Paki team pulled off an incredible feat of designing and manufacturing a plane, albeit with a few components/ parts sourced from other countries. And to top it all off, the number of dumb Pakis going Mashallah, Allahmodillah, Congrats etc.

It is difficult to understand the explosive reaction to Dalrymple’s essay. Contrary to the assertions critics have made, scholars like Dalrymple and Bruce Riedel have argued strenuously that it is Islamabad and its support of terrorism that is the root of all the problems in the region, including India, Afghanistan, nuclear, and Islamism. India’s role, unfortunately, is acting as the object of ditransitive Pakistani terrorism. In fact, I, for one, applaud what little mettle India has shown for strategic thinking in Afghanistan and would like to see more of it.

What do you guys think?
