ISI closely connected with Indian Mujahideen operatives: NIA - The Hindu
Pakistan intelligence agency ISI was “closely connected” with top operatives of banned Indian Mujahideen (IM) and provided shelter to its members wanted in India, the National Investigation Agency has told a special court in New Delhi.

The NIA said this in its supplementary charge sheet filed against 20 suspected IM operatives, including its absconding co-founders Riyaz Bhatkal and Iqbal Bhatkal, in connection with a case relating to larger conspiracy of the banned group to carry out terror activities across the country.

“Investigation has established that in pursuance of the conspiracy, accused A-10 (Riyaz Bhatkal) has remained closely connected with the ISI of Pakistan. The ISI organised training of IM operatives and also provided shelter to several accused persons, including A-10, after they were wanted by Indian courts for their involvement in terrorist activities,” the agency said.

The NIA also said that its probe in the case established that Iqbal Bhatkal, who is based in Pakistan, had been associated with ISI to obtain funds and support.

“Investigation has established that accused Iqbal Bhatkal had associated himself with the Pakistani agency called as ISI for obtaining regular funding and infrastructural support for the IM operatives,” it said.

“Accused A-11 (Iqbal Bhatkal) was also summoned by the ISI officials on certain occasions and given directions. Due to the closeness of ISI with A-11, there were occasional intra-organisational rifts, as established during the investigation,” the NIA further said.

Out of the 20 accused named by NIA in its charge sheet, 17 have not been arrested yet while three others, Tehsin Akhtar, Haidar Ali and Zia-ur-Rehman, are in judicial custody in connection with the case.

The NIA had earlier filed two charge sheets in the case against nine suspected IM operatives, including its co-founder Yasin Bhatkal and his close aide Asadullah Akhtar alias Haddi, who were arrested by the agency on August 28, 2013 in the case.

All these accused have been named in the charge sheet for the offences under various sections of the IPC, including 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 121 (waging war against the country), 121-A (conspiracy to wage war) and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

In its supplementary charge sheet filed against the 20 accused, the NIA said that IM operatives wanted to create a situation in India similar to the one prevailing in Iraq and Syria.

It also said that some of the suspected IM men had wanted to be sent to Syria with other jihadis.

NIA is probing the alleged roles of 33 suspected IM men in the case out of which 29 have been list in the charge sheet by it.

US terror sanctions not binding on Pakistan: Pakistani FO Spokeswoman - Dawn
"There is a procedure at the United Nations to declare any person or organisation a terrorist; however, the US' decision to declare three Pakistani-based organisations [as terror groups] does not apply to Pakistan," Foreign Office spokesperson Tasneem Aslam told reporters at the weekly media briefing in Islamabad.

Yes, we know what happened when the procedure was followed in the case of Hafeez Saeed.

World Polio Champions again, for the gajjilionth time!!

Thanks to years of dedicated work put in eradicating polio workers..!!

BTW, I hab a pooch: Polio spreads through the Oral-Faecal route, does it not? So the pakis crap where they eat? Or is it cause of questionable hand washing takneeki?

Advice to Pak: Pawkis must blame the US. Start claiming that they lost 100 million toilets due to drone strikes.. and now polio is out of control. Place a huge ad in the NYT claiming severe losses due to GWOT.

SSridhar Ji :

Please take heart! STFUP MAY HAVE WON only One Gold Medal but the Athletes of the World’s Only Religion of Peace in the Land of the Pure and Home of the Terrorists has won a Total of FIVE – yes indeed FIVE – Medals i.e. One Gold + One Silver and Three Bronze Medals bringing STFUP’s Total Medal Tally to FIVE,

The One sport STFU excels at i.e. Islamic Terrorism, has not been allowed by the Asian Olympics Committee but I am sure that STFUP’s hard efforts will eventually bear fruit

Pazkistan Charging to Victory by earning the Annual Polio Gold Medal for this year

PESHAWAR: Poliovirus continued to run wild in the country as by Thursday, seven more children had been diagnosed with the preventable disease which has infected at least 194 children in the country so far this year.

Till Thursday afternoon, the National Institute of Health, Islamabad had confirmed the presence of the virus in four-month-old Zubaid, son of Zafar, a resident of Jehangirabad village in Sheikhan union council, Peshawar.

According to an official of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa health department, the child had not received a single dose of the oral polio vaccine. He added Sheikhan UC is located along the border with Khyber Agency and a majority of the area’s children could not be vaccinated in the government’s much vaunted Sehat ka Insaf drive.

However, by the late evening, six more children had tested positive for the virus. These included one from Peshawar, two from Khyber Agency and one each from Karachi, North Waziristan Agency and Mardan. The samples had been collected between September 3 and September 20.

So far, out of the 194 total, 134 cases have been reported from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, 35 from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, 18 from Sindh, five from Balochistan and two from Punjab.

Famous last hopes!

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/s ... spy-agency
Can General Rizwan Akhtar clean up Pakistan’s notorious ISI spy agency?
High hopes for new chief of ISI, which has long been a law unto itself in the murky world of the Taliban, political gangs and mafias

Pakistan’s new spy chief, who takes up his post this month, comes to the job of running one of the world’s most notorious intelligence agencies after two years trying to bring order to one of Asia’s most troubled cities. Former colleagues have nothing but praise for General Rizwan Akhtar’s stint commanding the paramilitary Rangers during the internal security force’s crackdown on the criminal mafias, armed wings of political parties and religious militants that dominate the teeming port city of Karachi.

“Before the start of the operation there was no fear of law-enforcement agencies,” said Ahmed Chinoy, head of Karachi’s citizen police liaison committee. “With Akhtar, the fear was restored that they would be killed in an encounter, arrested or face the consequences.”

Akhtar has been praised for backing decent police officers against politicians who were anxious to protect their network of street thugs, and for making morale-boosting appearances on the streets during firefights and enhancing the Rangers’ intelligence gathering capabilities.

His supporters say this will all be invaluable when he takes over as director general of the Inter-Services Intelligence directorate (ISI), the powerful military spy agency.

“For him, a terrorist is a terrorist,” said Nasir Aftab, a senior Karachi policeman. “There is no impression of good terrorism or bad terrorism, or that some are working for Pakistan.”

Such moral clarity is not usually associated with the ISI, an organisation accused of conspiring to overthrow civilian governments and backing regional insurgencies.

The ISI has faced calls for it to be branded a terrorist organisation because of its habit of drawing a distinction between militants trying to topple Pakistan and those whose interests are confined to Afghanistan and India.

Frustrated western officials claim that only this year the Taliban-allied Haqqani network was assisted in moving to safety before the launch of a long-awaited military operation in North Waziristan, a tribal agency neighbouring Afghanistan that had been allowed to become a terrorist hub.

Sceptics say the ISI is beyond reform. Director generals only serve for a couple of years, hardly enough time to get to grips with a sprawling organisation that includes some officers who, it is feared, share the ideology of the militants that they handle. There has even been speculation that the ISI has slipped from the control of the army itself.

“[Under Akhtar] there will be no change in objectives but only in how he handles things,” said Ayesha Siddiqa, an analyst who specialises in military affairs. “He will try to make the army look neutral, but we are not going to see less intervention in politics, or changed perspectives on India or Afghanistan.”

But other analysts believe Pakistan’s military has been forced by the blossoming of domestic terrorism in the last decade to rethink its approach to militancy. After Pakistan was forced to side with the US and its allies in the military operation against the Taliban in 2001, jihadis who had been nurtured over decades for export to India and Afghanistan turned their guns on their former patron.

The army, for so long prepared and indoctrinated for war against India, had to transform itself into a force capable of fighting an internal insurgency, which has claimed the lives and limbs of thousands of soldiers.

For many, the experience of serving on the new front line has helped to inoculate them against the romantic illusions of Islamist jihad.

“Everything had to change to fight an enemy that is invisible and where the battle lines are not clearly drawn,” said a retired army officer whom Akhtar served under while working in South Waziristan – another militant haven where the military launched a milestone operation in 2009. “Personally I feel he will bring about profound difference in the ISI.”

Many of the themes in the military’s thinking are reflected in a 2008 dissertation that Akhtar wrote while attending a course at the US Army War College on the subject of the “US-Pakistan trust deficit and the war on terror”.

While the US was blamed for making numerous mistakes in the way it handled Pakistan, the dissertation also identified the need to “confront and eliminate Islamic extremism, and create a more tolerant society” as being among the country’s most “critical strategic challenges”.

“Most important, [Pakistan] must aggressively pursue rapprochement with India,” he wrote.

Kamran Bokhari, an analyst at the private intelligence company Stratfor, said Akhtar’s impact was likely to be incremental. “We overrate the importance of individual ISI chiefs, but ultimately he is part of a trajectory where the army does not want to directly govern Pakistan, even if it still wants to rule from behind the scenes,” he said.

“And the enthusiasm for developing non-state militant actors as instruments of foreign policy has gone because it has blown up in their faces.”

The ongoing relationship with groups such as the Haqqani network, Bokhari believes, is simply the ISI’s way of managing a group it is unwilling to pick a fight with.

The immediate hope for the government is that the new ISI chief will dispel the widespread belief that it has tried to undermine Nawaz Sharif, the embattled prime minister, who has been weakened by street protests in the capital led by opposition politician Imran Khan and Tahir-ul-Qadri, a cleric with a committed following.

Javed Hashmi, the former president of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, accused the former cricketer of attempting to topple Sharif’s government under the direction of ISI spies.

Sharif’s relationship with the ISI soured dramatically this year when Geo News, the country’s most popular television station, accused the incumbent director general, Zaheer-ul-Islam, of attempting to kill its star journalist during an April shootout in Karachi.

The government chose not to challenge the unprecedented public attack on the ISI and Sharif even made a point of rushing to the bedside of the wounded journalist.

Back in 2008, Akhtar wrote that “the role of the military should be limited to ensuring the nation’s security from external threats”. Sharif can only hope that he meant it.

‘US sanctions on Pak-based terror groups a boon for India’s stance’

New Delhi and Washington D.C. have agreed to work together to dismantle terrorist outfits such as Al Qaeda, Lashkar-i-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-i-Muhammad and the Haqqani Network, most of whom are based in Pakistan.
Both LeT and HuM had already been declared terrorist organisations by the United Nations Security Council through Resolution 1267 and, therefore, this particular announcement will help the Indians effectively highlight their stance over the disputed territory of Kashmir
The international community had raised concerns over human rights violations in Indian-held Kashmir, but after the UN resolution and the US sanctions on groups considered to be ‘terrorists’ by India, it seems that the international community is less interested in human rights violations and more concerned about terrorists’ networks. 8)
I think Pakistan failed to adequately project its case at the global level. Pakistan has been and is still fighting a war against terrorists; it had arrested those accused of the Mumbai attacks accused and submitted their challan in an anti terrorism court

Clueless paki, as usual.
