Thanks, B-ji. The Assamese Hindu has been kept under pressure by the Muslim League and the British since the early 1870s, when they started importing labour to Brahmaputra valley to cultivate tea and rice. The real game changer was in the 1910s and 1920s, though, when about 10% of the total population of Assam was brought from Bengal, as much to cultivate the land there as to cut down the Hindus of Assam. I would guess that the same model was studied and re-implemented by the Islam-pasand Congress. Funnily enough, again roughly 10-15% of Assam population was once more imported in the 70s-90s.
Singha ji,
you are forgetting the case of "referendum". The then Assam congress apparently did its best to prevent Bengali Hindus of Sylhet managing to vote in the referendum. Maybe they did not want any Muslim at all, so thought of shedding the entire area. Alternatively, just like in Bihar the fire of "Ahom in existential crisis because of Bengalis" was lighted up by the Brits at about the same time it was done in Bihar and UP - so, the then Assam pradesh congress's mindset was merely an anticipation of the "Bangali kheda" movement to come.
My own take is that Assam government, particularly the bureaucracy, even at the time of partition, was heavily Bengali. Assamese feared that the addition of Sylhet (which shares little in common with the Assamese speaking Brahmaputra valley) would swamp the new state with Bengalis and render Assamese completely valueless. Also, the Assamese opposed bringing in Sylhet as part of Assam, but I have never seen any opposition by Gopinath Bordoloi to accession of Sylhet to India (they just didn't want it as part of Assam). Large parts of Assam were already Muslim-ised by then (Dhubri district, which was a part of the bigger Goalpara district, even had a Muslim majority even at the time of partition, so fear of Muslims had little to do with it). Muslims formed about 45% of the erstwhile British Goalpara district, Kamrup had 39% and Nagaon had 35% Muslims in 1941 census. Assamese Hindus had little fear of Muslims in Brahmaputra valley in 1947, since they were, at the time, weak and powerless, impoverished cultivators who barely eked out a living, tilling plots for many Assamese landlords. Even the 1961 agitation was about language - not according official status to Bengali in the Bengali speaking Barak valley. It is only the demographic threat to Assam as a whole that has brought about any Hindu unity in today's Assam.
In "Bengal" the Nehruvian apparent "readiness" to concede was checked by the intransigence of the groups containing people like Atulya Ghosh: whose bargaining power probably led in their potential value as a younger batch of Bengal Congress who could be used against the "big-five" including Sarat Bose. Sarat Bose et al were favouring united Bengal and even potential separate independence, together with Fajlul Haque. Ghosh et al opposed this and hence turned up against Bose group. Eliminating the Bose group from Bengal Congress influence was more important for Nehruvian dynastic Delhi coterie - so they made a show of giving in to Roy/Ghosh group (or rather the so-called Hooghly group - with a significant origin in anarchist/Left initial forays, Ghosh was among the group who were introduced to Lenin's works in jail by Bhupendranath Dutta).

The way this concession/territorial business was conducted, reflects more a concern to weaken the regional congresses, division of the political forces of the "hindu", and if possible to traumatize them for generations in a way that would prevent them taking serious involvement in politics that could threaten dynastic coterie power.
Fantastic insights. Thanks, B-ji.

yes, it needed a agitation to introduce assamese as the official language of govt work and school instruction in assam. the clerical classes were all dominated by 'bengali boro babu' (head clerks) until then.

see even until 1970 when my father entered a PSU bank as a deputed permanent transfer from the state agriculture dept, there were very very few assamese people in things like PSU banks...he recalled only two from that era in his bank which has a large presence in the east. so assamese educated were small and lagging well behind in grabbing salaried work opportunities.

even now periodic riots take place over scarce local job opportunities. eg NF Railway exams and candidates from bihar.

the thing is imo, Eastern india is a abject economic failure after 67 years of independence. not one of those states can stand on its two legs without lots of handouts and central aid. and the keystone is west bengal as the most populated, access to sea, with best centers of education and best transport network.

so long as west bengal is a economic failure as a magnet state to lift its neighbours, east india will continue to languish at bottom of barrel.

pretty much a good chunk of the most qualified bengalis move to other parts of india and the world every decade....a massive brain drain. if we look at old timers in DRDO a lot of them settled permanently in blr after retirement even.

Sirjee, it is not a qn of acting as an agent so much as "being coopted".

Massa has dosas on all, I mean all, Netas of Desh. Would be easy to co-opt Didi using a blend of sweet talk and veiled warnings.

Massa wants a certain Mullah party to ascend in BD. Ergo they target the border state i.e., WB. Didi has more than enough dirty laundry. Simple no saar?

Also please note that Hillary madam never goes and visits chief ministers from MP or CH. She goes and visits Amma ( person of influence, possible future PM etc).

Pliss to read WikiLeaks on how the local consuls keep a hawk eye on all the local political developments in Desh. Also for your enjoyment I might recommend the episode with Natwar Singh's dolt of a son. Search for "oil for food scam", "Natwar" on BR onlee.

NIA finds clues of pan Indian terror network
KOLKATA: NIA is getting new clues to a wider terror network with each passing day of its investigation into the Burdwan IED blast. What was suspected to be the handiwork of elements from SIMI-HuJI-LeT of India and JMB of Bangladesh now seems to point to a much bigger network that was trying to recruit, train and push back cadres into Bangladesh and parts of Assam to "revive Jihadi terrorism", say intelligence sources.

What's more worrying, neither the module nor the method seems to be pointing to any outfit that Indian agencies are aware of.

IB sources say it is not the extent but the sheer scale of planning that worries them. For instance, JMB operative Saiful Islam, arrested from Assam, has admitted to attending Bengal operations head Shakil Ahmed Gazi's training sessions at Simulia and Lalgola. He was also aware of the module's activities at Khagragarh and Mongolkot. "What was especially alarming was his statement that he took arms training in Jharkhand, too. He told us that Shakil was involved in illegal arms trade during the early days in the organization and often visited Masjidpara Lane in Metiabruz in Kolkata. It was here that a powerful blast in 2012 killed two people," said a source.

Interesitng bit of news. Army destroys several camps in PoK. I assume that this is a side effect (or maybe a very intended main effect) of the retaliatory firing. Or did our soldiers cross over to the Pakistani side to off the terrorists? Haven't seen this news in any MSM outlet. Still grand start, if true.

2 Lankans caught with Rs 50cr heroin in Chennai - ToI
In what could be among the largest-ever seizures of narcotics in the country, a joint team of the Delhi and Chennai police forces personnel on Friday night seized 17kg of heroin, worth Rs 50 crore, from two Sri Lankan nationals in Poonamallee, on the city's outskirts.

Based on information received about the smuggling of a secret consignment of heroin from Chennai to Sri Lanka, a team of the Delhi police's anti-narcotics cell, led by a deputy superintendent of police, arrived here on Thursday. Along with select members of the city police, they stormed a house in Narasimha Nagar in Mailam, near Poonamallee, and nabbed the two men, identified as Toufiq, 40, and 60-year-old Rafiq, 60.

The arrested men are being questioned separately to see find out if they are linked to any terror outfit or those organization connected to Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

Investigators are also trying to find out where they sourced the huge consignment of heroin from, where did they intended to take it to and who is behind them?

Preliminary inquiries revealed that the Narasimha Nagar house where Toufiq and Rafiq were nabbed was taken for rent by a man named Perumal and that the two Lankan nations arrived there on October 10 and stayed as Perumal's guests.

Earlier, before storming the house, the police team talked to Ravi, who had rented his house to Perumal, about the movements of the duo. After confirming their presence in the house, the police team barged in and took them into custody. A thorough check of the place revealed the consignment of heroin wrapped in clothes in a leather suitcase. The house has been sealed.

Police are also questioning Perumal to find out how and where he came into contact with the arrested men.

A senior police officer said the two men allegedly received the consignment from a Delhi-based drug dealer who has close nexus with some smuggling groups based in Afghanistan. "We are also making inquiries with them to know more about the destination and the trail of the drug." National Investigation Agency (NIA) officials and central intelligence bureau officials have also questioned the two men about their links with suspected ISI agents "who are keen on destabilising India's economy".

Burdwan Blast :NIA sleuths probe houses inter-linked w holes on Irrigation Dept (Poschim Banga Govt ) land
Two of the four inter-connected houses in Muluk village. Picture by Indrajit Roy
What: Four houses built illegally on government land. Suspected to be part of a colony being built by some suspects in the Burdwan blast case

Where: Muluk village, 3km from Santiniketan, in Bolpur, and 29km from President Pranab Mukherjee’s ancestral home

What’s so special?

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) probing the Burdwan blast is looking at the cluster of houses because all of them are interconnected by holes in the walls. The occupants can move from one house to the other — as in vestibule-linked trains — without stepping out or being noticed by outsiders.

“Each house has a hole in a wall through which one can enter the next house or its courtyard. All the outer walls have loosely knit bricks that can be easily removed. We have never seen such construction before,” an investigator said

Who were the occupants?

The NIA suspects the houses belong to Mithu Sheikh, Talehar Sheikh, Abdul Malek and Dalim Sheikh. In an account in The Telegraph by a Shimulia madarsa student on Wednesday, the girl had mentioned Dalim as the person who had persuaded her father to send her to the institute, suspected of indoctrinating trainees.

Who lives in the houses now?

No one. All four have been absconding since the October 2 blast in Burdwan, 67km from the four houses. The NIA found books in Arabic, a laptop, computer parts and printers in the houses. Two cellphones were found in a well in front of one of the houses

What are neighbours saying?

Eight others had been staying in the houses for the past few months. All 12 claimed to be hawkers of honey, mosquito nets, clothes and utensils. The villagers said the occupants used to leave by 8am and return around noon. “They never spoke to anybody in the village and were mostly seen together,” a villager said

West Bengal turns into new haven for terrorist activities http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/west ... 96549.html
Noxious community-centric political patronage, spiralling migration and extreme poverty are turning the rural outskirts of West Bengal into a haven for terrorist activities. The National Investigating Agency (NIA), which is probing the recent Burdwan blast, has unearthed a chain of illegal madrasas or Muslim educational centres, which were being used as a cover for providing training to militants. According to NIA sources, the primary objective of these hubs was to give training to prospective militants in explosive manufacturing and in establishing links with international terror outfits.

A seven-page preliminary report submitted by S.K. Singh, who leads the NIA team, to the home ministry, has blamed sympathetic Islamic groups based in neighbouring Bangladesh and other countries for funding the subversive activities in the state.

...
"The situation is very complex now. There are several direct and indirect factors involved in it. These illegal madrasas mushroomed over a period of time as practically there was no monitoring or intelligence mechanism available with the local administration," informs a senior official of the State police. "They (people engaged in terror activities) also enjoy local political support and set up these terror cells right under the nose of the administration," says the official.

"By cozying up to the ruling Trinamool administration, the terror groups successfully avoided any queries pertaining to their identities from law enforcement agencies," the official alleges.

...
According to sources, they were also given a free hand by the local police in whatever they did. As a result they indiscriminately built up bases, purchased agricultural land to set up illegal madrasas, recruited locals for subversive activities, gave arms training and imparted ideological lessons.

...
As the NIA and National Security Guard (NSG)-led joint investigation is progressing, two things are gaining prominence: one, the terrorist group used to enjoy indirect support from the ruling Trinamool Congress locally and two, there was a massive failure of the state intelligence machinery which failed to identify the suspected terrorists holed up in the rural outskirts.

Another ‘terror colony’ found in Bengal
BOLPUR: A row of locked houses, barely four kilometres from the Visva Bharati University in Tagore's Santiniketan, caught the attention of the NIA team on Saturday. This was a week after the team identified a similar cluster of houses at Muluk in Bolpur.

One of them, so close to Visva Bharati, belonged to Habibur Seikh, a most-wanted in the Burdwan blast case. Habibur was a close aide of Kausar, who is now absconding. At a distance stood three houses beside the canal — all under lock and key. They belonged to Mithu Seikh, Taleha Seikh and Abdul Malek.

Their mentor Dalim Seikh used to live nearby. NIA members interrogated the mothers of Habibur and Mithu Seikh. They had to break open the locks of the other houses because there was no one inside. The houses have no free space in between and this raised the suspicion that a secret passage could be somewhere within. The NIA team collected the bullet that was found lying in the courtyard of Taleha Sheikh for the last four days. Investigators raided all the houses and came out with documents and a laptop.

On Tuesday last, Habibur's mother Jyotsna Bibi told the media that her son had no connection with his family for the last two years. She also told that there was a jihadi group in the village and Dalim, Malek and Taleha ran that gang. She had told earlier that her son was 'brain-washed' by the 'Jihadis' and they took her son away. Jyotsna Bibi told this to the NIA team on Saturday.

NSG and NIA in assistance with police personnel operation going on at Simulia Madrasa in Burdwan following the Khagragar blast and related extremist operation in the area, abouty 120kms from Kolkata.

According to Muluk panchayat sources, the land on which the houses of Mithu, Taleha and Abdul were built did not have proper land right.

Rousana Bibi, mother of Mithu Seikh, told NIA officials that her son had gone to Mitrapur, a village in Rampurhat subdivision to visit their ancestral houses but had not returned back. NIA officials visited the house twice.

Surprisingly, though, almost all the villagers knew them, they attended namaz along with others in the local mosque but they 'did not imagine any terror connection with them'.

On condition of anonymity, a youth said, "The land on which Dalim Seikh constructed the house belonged to my family. My father had sold it to our neighbour from whom Dalim had purchased the land four years ago. Dalim purchased it at very high price."

The trio, Mithu, Taleha and Abdul, had plans to purchase the adjacent land too, a villager said.

^^ The cheerful result of decades of Communist "social engineering"... Glad to see the focus on WB. I hope a similar focus shines on Mallustan, too, in the near future.

It appears that GoI is really trying to take out major embedded cells. I wonder how the numerous "dormant seeds" introduced over previous decades will be memetically Modi-fied. Perhaps the immediate goal over the next few years is to render the active jihadi component impotent for any immediate attacks during sensitive times, by removing the sleeper cells. By 2019, several issues including Baluchistan, Sindh and Iran-Pakhanastan relations will come to a boil, there is the likelihood Modi will get a second term, and it is also the year that Pakistan turns 72...

The then Assam congress apparently did its best to prevent Bengali Hindus of Sylhet managing to vote in the referendum.
It was not the Congress in Delhi which did that. The National leadership had to accomodate the Assamese hindu, the Bengali hindu and the muslim bengali in that order as far as Assam was concerned. It easy for armchair analysts to pontificate, but the Sylheti Bengali Hindus and the Assamese hindu of Brahmaputra valley did not see eye to eye.The Sylheti culture was an extension of east bengal hindu civilisation while the Assamese hindus drew inspiration from ancient kamrupa. Its to the credit of assamese, bengali and national congress that the bengali identity is intact in Silchar,Assam.
Sorry! thats not history. The distrust you speak of is the same I spoke of - but it was a much later phenomena than the "kamarupa" identity. This distrust was more a creation of a particular axis between Brits, mullahs trying to expand into Brahmaputra valley and a section of Ahom large landholders, who formed the bulk of the Congress in the valley in the 30's.

There is nothing called a distinct "east bengal Hindu civilization" that was oh-so-separate from Assam-bengal-hindu culture. The Brahmaputra valley turned strongly Gaudya vaishnava from Kamarupa Shaiva-Shaakta culture, and this mass transition either preceded or followed Chaitanya's extensive tour of Srihatta (now Sylhet). Sylhet zone showed in its Hindu population a continuum of culture primarily very strongly based on Gaudya Vaishnavism, extending in a continuum into Brahmaputra valley. Some of the oldest vaishnava akharas are on the flood-plain islands of Brahmaputra till today - and "flourishing", as far as I know.

The "realities" you speak of apparently didnt constrain Lutyenite Congressis around the MKG-JLN axis to intervene and stamp out such differences in key states - or states they felt were key. Whereas, they apparently did play the full factional siding with "sides" in other cases, and bengal and Assam were prominent examples of this. There were far greater constraints on their home turfs in UP, Guj, Bihar. You can check out even the hagiographies of INC history for the hints on how subregionalisms were dealt with wherever such subregionalisms threatened the coteries grip over central "High command" - from as early as mid-20's.

I think you are missing my point.

The differences between assamese and bengalis influenced the sylhet vote, not the Congress leadership in Delhi. Also there were distinct bengali hindu and hindu assamese identities. This is reality. The great assamese kingdoms of past were not the same as the great kingdoms of bengal.

Politically,Sylhet was extension of East Bengal.Kamrupa was never part of Bengal. My terms "East Bengali civilisation' were inaccurate, but not entirely divorced from political history.

In thhe modern era, many bengalis saw assamese culture as a sub culture of Bengal. The Assamese rejected that idea vehemently.(GDs post(s) is (are) well known).Chaitanya vaishnavism never replaced the Sankaradeva sampradaya as the primary vaishnava sampradaya of Assam. That itself is an important pointer.

I dont want to harp on the differences.Thats hardly my aim.

You cannot absolve the national leadership of INC. You don't donate land to the other side becoz you cannot resolve issues between Bengalies and Assamese. They should have forcefully intervened in both Sylhet and CHT.

if the police don’t stop visiting madarsas, Mamata Banerjee’s government will fall.”

Burdwan, Oct. 20: A leader of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind in Bengal today said that all madarsas in the state were “not bad” just because “anti-social activities had been detected in “one or two”.

“Anti-social activities have been detected in one or two madarsas. That does not mean all madarsas are bad. Madarsas are places where one’s character is built. But we are noticing that after the blast in Khagragarh, madarsas are being viewed differently. This is not right,” said Siddiqullah Chowdury, a state-level general secretary of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind.

“If this goes on, lakhs of Muslims who for decades are living in this country will be hurt. So, we appeal that this aspect should be given a thought,” he told a public meeting organised by the Burdwan district committee of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind. An estimated 75,000 people, mostly madarsa students and imams, had gathered to take part in the meeting in Burdwan.

Chowdhury said that four persons arrested in the Burdwan case were not getting legal help. “Those who have been arrested are not getting legal help. We will provide them with legal assistance. We will discuss the matter with lawyers,” he said.

Police sources said the arrested persons were produced at Bankshall court on October 13 by the CID and were formally handed over to the NIA. “No lawyer represented them and the arrested persons did not seek any legal help,” a police officer said.

Chowdhury added: “We took part in the Singur and Nandigram movements and changed the government. We don’t want to change the Mamata Banerjee government right now. But if the police don’t stop visiting madarsas, Mamata Banerjee’s government will fall.”

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/guwahati/Police-fire-rubber-bullets-during-Silchar-bandh/articleshow/44893871.cms
The police on Monday fired at least four rounds of rubber bullets at a violent mob at Fatak Bazaar locality in Silchar during a 12-hour bandh called by the BJP and arrested 10 people.

The police action came after a group of people opposing the bandh turned violent in the minority-dominated part of the town at around 1 pm, according to a senior police officer. He said the security forces managed to disperse the mob — which was throwing glass bottles and other materials at other people — by firing the rubber bullets. The officer said the police later chased away the mob.

No one was injured, said additional superintendent of police (Cachar) Rajveer Singh.

Cachar deputy commissioner Gokul Mohan Hazarika said at least 380 people, including both the supporters and opponents of the bandh, were taken into custody. He said a case was registered against 10 of these people, who were kept in police custody even as the rest of the detained people were released in the evening.

The BJP district committee called the Cachar district dusk-to-dawn bandh to protest against the alleged collapse of law and order in the Barak Valley and the alleged atrocities on women.

Normal life came to a standstill across the district during the bandh. All government offices, including banks and educational institutions, remained closed. Shops and other business establishments also remained shut. No vehicles were seen on the roads, but flights did take off from Silchar airport during the bandh period.

Guys, this thread is internal security and not about inter-state water disputes. There is a separate thread for that. No more discussion on that here. I will delete the above irrelevant posts by tomorrow.

‘NIA deployed minor to carry grenades’
This news caught my attention. Where as a serious case of bomb blasts have happened, and terrorist motives are getting established 'The Hindu' is worried on the minor made to carry hand grenades. For them, this is the bigger problem. Did I hear any one command - Nobel Prize winner Sathyarthi, Parade par..?? (in order to take the case to a different angle, by triggering false alarms and scuttling proper investigations in the process).

The son of this gun had slit a classmate's throat some time ago. The slayer and the slayed both were in the 15-16 age bracket.

Is it time to have a separate thread on Mamata's WB?

Did this Bengal madrassa train terror1sts?
There was something strange about the mud house with its thatched roof and small compartments-cum-rooms that stood amid vast stretches of paddy fields. Once the motorable road ended, we had to walk along the aal, a narrow piece of land between paddy fields to reach the main door. The main gate was locked, but the backyard had a metal door latched from the inside. Entry was denied as an assistant sub inspector and six constables belonging to the West Bengal police guarded the mud house.

"We have been staying here for the past few days," the plainclothes police officer told Rediff.com after verifying our credentials over and over again. "You can take photographs from outside, but from a distance," he added in a stern voice.

We were at the Simulia madrassa in Bardhaman's Mongolkot, about 35 km from the town. The madrassa allegedly had links with Gulshana Bibi and Amina Bibi, the two women who were arrested for their alleged involvement in the October 2 blast at a two-storey house in Bardhaman's Khagragarh. According to sleuths, members of the terror outfit Jamat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh, a wing of the Harkat-ul Jihadi Islami-Bangladesh, were involved in the explosion.

The National Investigation Agency, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Vijayendra Singh, is investigating the case. The NIA is assisted by National Security Guard commandos, the West Bengal police and its Criminal Investigation Department. Subsequent inquiry and cross-examination of three suspected terrorists held by the police on the day of the explosion and others arrested later exposed the Simulia madrassa's alleged link to the incident.

After questioning Gulshana Bibi and Amina Bibi, the investigators discovered that the Simulia madrassa only admitted women at an early age. Women at the madrassa were experts in handling all sorts of arms, police sources told Rediff.com. The madrassa had 'recruiters' who would bring in new students from districts other than Bardhaman and hand them over to 'trainers' (the students had no clue about their identities).

As many as 30 to 40 young girls lived at the Simulia madrassa till October 2, the day of the explosion, after which neither the landowner nor the students could be traced. The madrassa land belongs to Borhan Sheikh. His family refused to speak to us despite persistent efforts.

The madrassa had an unwritten convention: The women trained there would be married only to men who were on the same 'mission,' police sources said.

Soon after marriage, the couple would either set out on an 'assignment' or await instructions, the sources added.

Investigations revealed that terror networks operating in West Bengal use couple modules and rent houses across the state to carry out subversive activities. According to sources, jihadis united in such a marriage hardly had any emotional attachment. Theirs was a marriage of convenience.

When the police broke open the house at Khagragarh after the explosion on October 2, they were stunned to find two men lying in a pool of blood and their 'wives' washing away the blood. While scanning the Simulia madrassa, NIA investigators discovered a secret tunnel behind a heap of steel trunks in a corner.

The tunnel opened into an adjacent pond. To ensure that no bombs or improvised explosive devices were hidden in the pond, the NIA hired local residents to scour the pond. The investigators believe the tunnel was used by terrorists for clandestine visits to the madrassa.

The investigators also seized bows and arrows, air guns, punching bags filled with sand and a phone book, believed to be of one Yousuf Sheikh, the madrassa's mentor. The phone book contains contact numbers of women who were trained at the Simulia madrassa, sources told Rediff.com Yousuf Sheikh is yet to be traced.

After interrogating the arrested women, investigators discovered that Sheikh received arms training in Uttar Pradesh for about four years before he came to the Simulia madrassa. The NIA also seized Arabic and Urdu literature that the 'students' were asked to read. The investigators also discovered an abandoned orange Tata Nano close to the madrassa, with the registration number WB 58F-6943. The car's registration number belonged to a two-wheeler and dated back to 2006. The first batch of Nano cars hit the roads in 2008. The Nano car had an 'army' sticker to hoodwink the police, sources told Rediff.com. The investigators picked up the car's owner, a resident of Beldanga in Murshidabad.

The Nano was used to carry arms and ammunition and also to transport people, sources said. The car and its passengers fooled the police mainly because of the 'army' sticker, they added.

Keeping in mind that the Panagarh military base is nearby, police pickets granted the vehicle safe passage. Two school students who live in a house close to the madrassa said they had seen the Nano car parked close to their home. "It would be gone by the evening and would be back the next morning or afternoon," they told Rediff.com. Asked if they had any friends at the madrassa, they said, "The girls who studied there hardly ventured out and even if they did, they were in burqa and would not speak to anyone." The Simulia madrassa has paddy fields all around, a pond (linked to the tunnel) towards the back and a bus stand close by.

While the terrorists could have used the tunnel and the paddy fields to access the madrassa at night, they could have availed of the Nano and state transport buses to move to any other part of the state, especially villages in Murshidabad bordering Bangladesh, sources told Rediff.com. The NIA's investigation has uncovered intricate links between the Simulia madrassa and some madrassas in Birbhum and Murshidabad districts.

The NIA has conducted raids at suspicious madrassas across Bengal.

"They had no links with the village, all the people there were outsiders. They wouldn't talk to us," says a man who lives near the Simulia madrassa.

"Often poor villagers send their daughters to unrecognised madrassas like this one which take care of their lodging and boarding in lieu of Rs 500, Rs 700 per month," the man told Rediff.com

According to sources, there are more than 3,500 unrecognised madrassas in Bengal. Bardhaman itself has 600.

Of these 600, only 32 are aided, sponsored or recognised by the state government.

"Didn't you ever see anything suspicious" we asked another man whose home has a clear view of the madrassa.

"Nothing seemed suspicious," he said. "The madrassa belonged to a different world, it seemed. Life has changed after the Khagragarh incident. We are often questioned by the police."

"All of us who stay close to this place live in fear. Perhaps, we should have been more alert," he said.

The NIA is not ruling out a possible link between the Bardhaman explosion and the May 1 blasts aboard a train at the Chennai Central railway station, which had killed a young IT professional and injured 14 others.

The Assam police, which arrested six people for probable links to the Bardhaman blast, is on the lookout for 30 suspects.

Jaipur police launches drive against Bangladeshi migrants
Jaipur police has launched a drive against Bangladeshi migrants, living here illegally and under fake names, after some of them were allegedly found involved in a dacoity case recently in posh Vaishali Nagar locality. The drive began from Bhankhrota area here following directions from the Director General of Police, a senior official said.

"A door-to-door survey has been initiated in localities under Bhankhrota police station area to identify illegal Bangladeshi migrants, if found, legal remedy will be taken," Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Karan Sharma told PTI on Thursday.

Many people in the locality have shown government identity cards, which would be verified from the government records to verify whether they are Bangladeshi or not, he said.
Hope RJ police are taking finger prints of these illegal BDs, so that later identification of these will be easier. If not, they will just relocate to another part of the country.

Wrong headline. It should read "Jaipur police takes action against dacoity suspects from Bangla Desh"

The emphasis is on the criminal act and not on the illegal immigrants.

Indian Air Force to ban Xiaomi smartphones

Indian Air Force to ban Xiaomi smartphones

Francis D'Sa | October 23, 2014, 16.10 pm IST

Earlier, Xiaomi was in a huge controversy about data security. Xiaomi was accused of stealing data from the user’s handsets and transmitting it to their servers back in China. The security threat accusation was slammed by Xiaomi, who denied of any such acts.

Similar threats of data being leaked out to the China servers were also cited in Taiwan and the Government there is investigating the same.

Back here, the Indian Air Force is planning on banning its force and families on using the Xiaomi smartphones. The IAF has alerted the users about the same threat of data being leaked out of the country, by default. The Indian Air Force has accused the Chinese smartphone maker for retrieving user information and sending it back to the data servers in Beijing, China. However, Xiaomi claims that their smartphones are safe and the Indian Air Force had issues a notice based on a two-month-old report by F-Secure. The initial testing was done by F-Secure on August 7, 2014 on a Redmi 1S, which had the issue of data automatically being transmitted. However, post the update of the OS, they tested the handset again on August 14, to confirm that the issue is no longer present.

Reports claim that the Indian Air Force has issued a medium alert to their squadrons and their families about the threat and have requested them to avoid using the Chinese smartphones. The IAF’s intelligence unit has prepared a note based on the investigations and information by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team.

The Note states that F-Secure, a security firm, carried out tests on the Redmi 1S, only to find that the phone was forwarding the carrier name, phone number, IMEI, address book records and SMS to the Chinese servers in Beijing. The report also mentioned about a user in Hong Kong, reporting that the Redmi Note automatically connected to a particular IP address hosted in China. The IP address belongs to the CNNIC, which is the administrative agency for Internet affairs operating under the Ministry of Information Industry of China.
