There are many little known facts that he brings out. His talk at TEDxBITSPilani :

J. Gopikrishnan talks about how it all began - the rise of the role of journalism in India.

J. Gopikrishnan talks about how it all began - the rise of the role of journalism in India. He talks about the current scenario and how technology can help in bringing about a more transparent form of journalism. An Indian journalist who unearthed the 2G Scam. Gopikrishnan has bagged several prestigious awards like CNN-IBN television channel’s ‘Indian of the Year’ in December 2010. He also presented a paper on ‘Telecom scandal of India” in coveted international journalists’ conference in Norway – SKUP in March 2012. He shifted to Delhi, to join "The Pioneer", an English newspaper, in 2008, where he went on to expose: the hidden list of companies floated by the relatives of then telecom minister A.Raja, midnight letters involving the 2G Scam exchanged between then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and A. Raja, hidden minutes of the meetings between then Finance Minister P.Chidambaram and Telecom Minister A.Raja. Gopikrishnan's major reports on the 2G scam, rocked the ruling Congress-led UPA Government and ultimately led to it's pummeling in 2014 elections, making J.Gopalakrishnan one of the most successful Investigative Journalist the country has ever seen. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community

I'm wary of just about any large commercial "news" media (especially foreign owned) which tends to be in the business of pushing propaganda.

Not that the occasional piece of journalism that emerges from there does not carry some truth.

But the overall objective tends to be brainwashing more so than news reporting.

Attempts have been made to recruit him to the BIF cause but so far he has remained steadfast to a nationalist view.

Absconding suspect nabbed 20 years after Coimbatore serial blasts Selvaraj A., ToI
Twenty years after a series of bomb blasts rocked the textile city of Coimbatore, a suspect was arrested by Tamil Nadu police.

The man, identified as Noohu, is from Kerala and is aged 44 years now. Soon after the blast, he went underground and was said to be working in Qatar for about two decades, before returning to Kerala now.

A special investigation division of the Tamil Nadu state intelligence secured him in connection with the serial bomb blast case reported in Coimbatore in 1998.

Sources said he was tracked to a hideout in Kerala on Tuesday.

Noohu had helped the bomb blast masterminds and suspects by providing accommodation soon after they executed the serial bomb blasts.

Later, he absconded and settled in Qatar. He worked there at an office all these years before coming down to Kerala early this morning.

Soon after he reached his native place, the special investigation division officials got a tip off and they apprehended him.

The SID wing has brought the suspect from Kerala to Chennai
for further questioning. He will be remanded in custody after being produced before a court in city on Tuesday.

OpIndia is bringing very serious/objective and research oriented journalism:

https://www.opindia.com/2018/09/demysti ... ous-nexus/
In the first article, we learned that most of those who were raided or arrested in connection with the violence at Bhima Koregaon and an alleged plot to assassinate Prime Minister Modi had links, either directly or indirectly, to the Coordination of Democratic Rights Organizations (CDRO). We also discovered that organizations associated with CDRO have a history of links to Maoists.
https://www.opindia.com/2018/09/demysti ... n-maoists/
In the second article, we discovered that one of the organizations which published the report, ‘Amarnath Yatra: A Militarized Pilgrimage’ had clear separatist inclinations and was affiliated to CDRO, a fact that was ignored by various media outlets which peddled the narrative of the report without any attempt at a critique or inspection
https://www.opindia.com/2018/09/demysti ... litarised/
we learned that the other organization involved with the publishing of the aforementioned report received contributions from foreign Christian organizations for research and advocacy work in tourism.

Demystifying the ‘Civil Society’: How are the ‘Urban Maoists’ and NOTA connected
PUCL has a long list of taking stance on ‘societal’ issues which would be perceived as ‘counter-productive’. From their solidarity with the banned People’s Front of India (PFI) to showing solidarity with Ajmal Kasab and Yakub Menon, both convicted terrorists responsible for the death of hundred’s of innocent Indians. It is this PUCL that filed the petition in the Supreme court of India to implement NOTA in Indian electoral system.
It is worth mentioning that this right was acknowledged by the Election commission even before ‘NOTA’ was implemented. The Election Commission in section 49 (O) of the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961 says that a voter could enter his electoral serial number in Form 17A and cast a negative vote. The presiding officer would then put a remark in the form and get it signed by the voter. This was done to prevent fraud or misuse of votes.

The PUCL petitioned the Supreme Court stating the secrecy of the negative voter’s identity is protected by making the negative voting anonymous. They argued, “The main substance of the arguments of learned senior counsel for the petitioners is that though right not to vote is recognized by Rules 41 and 49-O of the Rules and is also a part of the freedom of expression of a voter, if a voter chooses to exercise the said right, it has to be kept secret. Learned senior counsel further submitted that both the above provisions, to the extent of such violation of the secrecy clause are not only ultra vires but also contrary to Section 128 of the RP Act, Rules 39 and 49-M of the Rules as well as Articles 19(1)(a) and 21 of the Constitution.”

Their argument is based on the idea that inclusion of NOTA will provide a way for the voters to vent out their opposition to the candidates filed by various political candidates and the SC agreed, in a statement, “Negative voting will lead to a systemic change in polls and political parties will be forced to project clean candidates. If the right to vote is a statutory right, then the right to reject a candidate is a fundamental right of speech and expression under the Constitution,” said the presiding bench headed by then Chief Justice of India, P Sathasivam.
In the run-up to the 2014 elections, PUCL issued a press statement with the heading –

“Lok Sabha Elections, 2014: Fascism, Democracy’s Challenges and Role of Citizens. Vote for Principled Politics: USE NOTA effectively”.

When one reads this statement, it becomes rather evident that their stance on the Indian democracy and role of NOTA seems to be far from the one deliberated on in the Supreme Court hearing.
In this particular press statement, the argument has been changed from the betterment in the filing of candidacy by the political parties and overall betterment of the Indian electoral system to this-

“PUCL is extremely worried that the type of electoral alliances and the total lack of choice to the people of India. The human rights record of none of the major alliances inspires confidence that if they come to power they will respect the rule of law, the Indian Constitution and human rights,”

And:

“The rise of political intolerance is not just a threat to fundamental freedom of right and expression but undermines the very basis of democratic politics – which is the RIGHT TO DISSENT. This is particularly crucial when increasingly corporate interest are controlling policy making and development policies are turning anti-people.”

This insinuates that they clearly lack any respect for the existing democratic setup of the country and the people’s mandate. What more shocking is perhaps the overt emphasis on the presumption that the existing political structure is not adequate or appropriate for the kind of ‘democracy’ PUCL demands.

The more one looks into the tonality of the press statement the more it becomes clearer that there is a grey area regarding ‘right to dissent’. The dissent is not actually directed towards the political parties but the total rejection of the democratic set-up and elections in the country. The words used and the insinuations made by PUCL is eerily similar to the one used by Communist Party of India Marxist Leninist in favour of boycotting elections.
If we step away from the blurring lines between electoral reforms and sabotaging the electoral process that PUCL has drawn, then also the addition of NOTA makes no sense at all. The fundamental purpose of elections and voting is to choose electoral representatives and create a government and the negative voting stands in complete contrast to the very idea and purpose of elections.

GOVERNMENT AND POLICY Demystifying the ‘Civil Society’: Foreign funded organizations campaigning against Indian sedition laws

Strange thing is many SC judges are picking these PILs to get fame or directly influenced by foreign powers to push their agenda.

One of the organizations that strongly advocates the repeal of sedition laws is the Human Rights Law Network (HRLN), which is a division of the Socio-Legal Information Centre (SLIC). We have reported earlier that the HRLN is part of a campaign to abolish sedition laws along with PUCL, PUDR, APDR, CPDR, APCLC, which are coordinating organizations of CDRO. The June 2012 bulletin of CDRO also reports that a resolution was adopted against ‘Sedition and other repressive laws’ to which the HRLN was a signatory. The HRLN also used reports by organizations associated with the CDRO to further the notion that “The spectre of communalism in UP is overwhelming and we will need to band together if we are to have any effect in the state.” In the first part of the series, we have explored extensively the links of CDRO to Naxalites.
HRLN claims it has been providing free legal aid to Rohingya detainees across the country. The network has filed PILs related to the implementation of the RTE Act. HRLN has also filed a PIL in the Supreme Court on behalf on Najeeb’s mother, the missing student from JNU, upon which the SC directed the Delhi government, the Police and authorities at JNU to be even more rigorous in their probe to find him.”
. Conspicuously, the SLIC has received contributions worth crores of rupees from Bread for the World and Misereor, two Christian organizations which also donated to Equations, one of the organizations that published the report on Amarnath Yatra in collaboration with JKCCS, an organization with clear separatist organizations affiliated to the CDRO.

The organization has also received contributions from the International Network of Civil Liberties Organizations (INCLO), an organization it is a member of; Oxfam, an organization that has been accused of covering up the sexual exploitation of women in Haiti by its senior members; Australian Volunteers International and the Oak Foundation.
SLIC has received contributions to the tune of over 2 crore rupees from the European Union (EU) Delegation to India between April and June 2016. And between April and June 2017, the SLIC received over 2 crore rupees in contributions, this time from the European Commission, which is the executive of the EU.
the organization also received a contribution of more than 4 crores from George Soros’ Open Society Institute between January and March 2016. The nationalist government of Hungary that strongly opposes the influx of refugees into the European Union has been at war with George Soros for quite a while. Last year, the Hungarian government made it mandatory for NGOs that received funding from abroad to register with the state, a move that was seen to be targeted towards Soros which did not go down well with the European Union.
Another organization that is fighting hard against sedition laws is Common Cause, an NGO that has Prashant Bhushan and Paranjoy Guha Thakurta in its Governing Council among others. As per Darpan, a government website that allows citizens to access information on NGOs, Common Cause is registered under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). However, the organization has not specified its source of funds or the amount it has received as a contribution.

Common Cause (CC) has filed several PILs with political implications. In 2013, it filed a PIL in the Delhi High Court for “Strengthening the institution of the Lokayukta” where it urged “the High Court to set aside the orders of the Lt. Governor.” It also filed a PIL in the Supreme Court of India seeking an inquiry against Justice K.G. Balakrishnan which could have led to his removal from the chair of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). CC has also filed a contempt petition in the Supreme Court for the non-appointment of Lokpal by the NDA government. CC has also filed a PIL challenging the appointment of Rakesh Asthana as the Special Director (SD) CBI. The matter was dismissed by the Supreme Court on November 28, 2017.

Despite Tamil Nadu cabinet push, Rajiv case convicts face uncertainty.
Looks like there are multiple options available with the government, including the right to sit idle and no action on the GoTN recommendation.

SC judges hope to get onto ICJ as pinnacle of their sorry careers.
Hence all these lax judgments to make themselves appealing to the Western powers that fix those ICJ appointments.

Sachin, What is really going on here? Is this neo-Islamist 'blood money' type of justice where victims and perpetrators compromise and tell the State they are ok?

What is INC angle to releasing these guys.

When technology impregnated entities like twitter have already revealed their left leaning mindsets and are openly slanting and censoring opposing viewpoints and bias, the news from google is not too heartening either.

There is very real fear of these guys meddling and interfering with the 2019 elections in India. jeff bezos of amazon is openly supporting world vision despite knowing fully well their predatory tactics in India, or maybe it is ONLY because of their predatory tactics and "secular" agenda, that he is supporting them.

Leaked video shows Google executives saddened by Trump election

SAN FRANCISCO: Far-right news website Breitbart on Wednesday posted a leaked video showing Google executives sharing with employees how troubled they were by the election of US President Donald Trump.

The leak of the hour-long video from a TGIF (Thank God It's Friday) town hall-style gathering shortly after Trump won office in November of 2016 came as the president and his allies accuse the leading search engine of bias against politically conservative viewpoints.

"I know this is probably not the most joyous TGIF we have had," Google co-founder Sergey Brin said in the video.

"As an immigrant and a refugee, I certainly find this election deeply offensive. I know many of you do, too."

Brin said most people at the meeting were upset and saddened by an election outcome that indicated many people in the US don't share the values of those at Google when it came to immigrants, minorities, women, and the world being left to children.

Google chief executive Sundar Pichai also addressed the gathering, saying that while the election was rife with rhetoric and division, people should have faith in the democratic process.

Pichai said he thought one of the reasons for the election outcome was that "people don't feel heard on either side."

"There is a lot of fear. It is important to reach out," Pichai said.

Google executives urged employees to remain true to their values, and trust that the internet can make lives better for people around the world, despite its flaws.

Google told AFP that for more than 20 years employees have been free to express personal viewpoints at all-hands get-togethers such as the one in the video.

"Nothing was said in that meeting, or any other meeting, to suggest that any political bias ever influences the way we build or operate our products," Google said in response to an AFP inquiry.

"To the contrary, our products are built for everyone, and we design them with extraordinary care to be a trustworthy source of information for everyone, without regard to political viewpoint."

Google and other major US internet firms are facing intense scrutiny for allowing the propagation of misinformation and hate speech, and allegations of political bias from the president and some Republican lawmakers.

What is INC angle to releasing these guys.
The victims and perpetrators forming a compromise solution once the court gives their verdict is not going to work out in Indian law. Secondly, the pro-LTTE people are also cleverly hiding a sad truth; the bomb blast also killed around 14 other people who were either civilians or many of them wore a uniform to make an honest living. What their relatives feel about LTTE and their act of bomb blast is deliberately ignored. Assassination of Rajiv Ghandi is not as if some one LTTE chaps came to his home and just murdered him.

That being said the visible change in Congress stand was when Sonia Ghandi and Priyanka Vadra Ghandi all was having much higher political ambitions. There was a time when speculation was very high that Sonia Ghandi would even try to become the Prime Minister. It was during this time that the Ghandi family started taking a "pardon the killers of Rajiv Ghandi" stance. By then Indian National Congress under command of Sonia had clearly charted a new course, with perhaps religious influence playing a crucial role. From then on Sonia's coterie had a clear religious bias. So during this time Priyanka Vadra Ghandi visited one of the murder accomplices in jail and made some statement of "pardoning her" etc. (even though it has no legal standing).

Perhaps the reason for INC to change its stance would be the realisation that there are still lot many sympathisers for LTTE within TN. And they thought that by taking a very "biblical" stance of pardoning the sinners, they may get more votes. Off course there is also a strong sentiment within all parties within Tamil Nadu that releasing these convicts may lead to electoral gains (which is glaring admission that pro-LTTE sentiments are strong in TN).

It is only one among the convicts - Perarivalan @ Arivu - who has been pushing hard to get himself released. It was his statement that he only procured a 9W battery which is gaining traction. It was Dy.SP Raghothaman (most likely a TN Police official then on deputation to CBI) who actually framed the charge sheet and even stood as one of the first prosecution witnesses in the case. And this official also later "admitted" that he had ignored some of Arivu's statements. But we must understand that the same case went up through multiple judicial courts, which found all the evidences convincing. The other convicts have not made any statements after they got their sentences. But looks like there is some one batting for them as well, using Arivu as a pawn. The plan seems to be to use Arivu's situation to get him released, and also get the rest of them released as well. Arivu is an Indian citizen, many of the other are Sri Lankans residing illegally in India.

Aside: There was the infamous Veerappan and his gang. And it may be only Veerappan (and two others) who met a tragic end in a police encounter. There were bigger murderers in his gang, all who got their death sentence commuted. Simon, Gnanasekharan all seemed to have got some help from their church.

Getting away with assassination of a former PM

Getting away with assassination of a former PM
Devanshu Rajput, September 13, 2018

Tamil Nadu government has recently recommended the governor, Banwarilal Purohit to accept the clemency petition under article 161 by one of the assassins of Rajiv Gandhi, AG Perarivalan. Article 161 of constitution deals with the jurisdiction of governor and grants governor the power to provide respite, suspend or to commute any punishment, be it death penalty or life imprisonment if a convict(penalised by state law) sends a mercy petition.

Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in a Suicide bomb-blast on 21 May 1991, by Thenmozhi Rajaratnam AKA Dhanu, sent by the Liberation of Tamil Tiger Eelam, a secessionist and terrorist organization, that time active in Sri Lanka. The whole operation was coordinated in the forests of Jaffna by LTTE chief Prabhakaran. The whole conspiracy was rooted in events emerging from ‘87 after Rajiv Gandhi had signed the Indo-Sri Lankan Accords, and sent Indian Troops for peace negotiations in Sri Lanka, to bail out a civil war-struck Sri Lanka.

BJP was threatening the central government of withdrawing support and rise of Congress back to power in the centre was inevitable. This meant re-implementation of Indian Peacekeeping Forces in Sri Lanka and a more aggravated crackdown on LTTE handles active in India, especially south.

After Congress withdrew the support from Chandra Shekhar’s SJP(R) government, and India was pulled into re-elections merely after 16 months of previous Lok Sabha elections. There couldn’t have been a better time for LTTE to have struck Rajiv Gandhi, as he was stripped of PM level security and he was vulnerable during the constituency-to-constituency election campaign.

At Sriperumbudur, all the events culminated in the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi along with many others and more than 40 people were critically injured. In August this year when a question was asked regarding the assassination, Congress President and Rajiv Gandhi’s son Rahul Gandhi said that he had no grudge against perpetrators of his father’s death and that he was appalled by the pictures of dead Prabhakaran in 2009. Rahul Gandhi wanted to paint an image of him being very forgiving and generous towards his personal nemesis, even if it meant pardoning his father’s murderers.

Nalini Sriharan, the women at whose house Dhanu had strapped the bomb and hidden, and, one of the seven convicts were awarded life imprisonment in 2000 had thanked Rahul Gandhi for not interfering in SC hearing regarding the mercy petition for the release of all convicts in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

What Rahul Gandhi should remember is that Rajiv Gandhi was not just his father, but also ex-PM of India(and probably the next PM) in 1991. His death was not just his personal loss, but a loss to the whole country. Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination had made India look vulnerable. It had exposed the gaping holes in our politics, defence and foreign affairs. Prabhakaran, had the blood of thousands of people on his hands when he was hunted down by Chinese forces in 2009.

UN reported total casualties to be more than 1 lakh at the end of the Sri Lankan civil war in 2009. What had started just as a protest against linguistic and cultural domination, was morphed into a bloody and vicious Civil War. Prabhakaran had brainwashed thousands of young minds to militate against Sri Lankan government and had made terrorists out of them. LTTE was responsible for the killing of 1200 soldiers from the Indian side(Total casualties during Kargil war was 527), who had gone to Sri Lanka as peacekeeping forces. The Indian government was an arch-enemy of Prabhakaran. He could have gone to any extent to achieve his diabolical goals, even it meant killing own Tamils(whose cause he always said to be his own).

For Rahul Gandhi to say that he was appalled by the death of the main mastermind behind all this, seems just like a political stunt. First and foremost, the killers were not culprits to the Gandhi family alone, they had committed a national crime. They are the culprits to the nation and not subject to any personal moral relief. India had played its role as peace spreading entity and had to pay a heavy price for it. The attack was a dent on India’s goals and ideas. I would like to ask Mr Rahul Gandhi if he knows Dharman, a 38-year-old police constable who also died in the bomb blast that killed Rajiv Gandhi. He was survived by his two small children. Kokilavani had read a beautiful poem dedicated to Rajiv Gandhi, just a few moments before Rajiv Gandhi’s death. She had her whole life ahead of her, the perpetrators did not give a damn about the likes of her. Her body was blown to smithereens in that blast. Has Rahul Gandhi even pardoned killers of that girl, too?

Several others, along with Dharman and 12-year-old Kokilavani, were killed in the blast. LTTE had not only taken an aim on an ex-PM, but also on India’s people and sovereignty. This was a tragedy of several families, not only one.

Authorities could not even identify Rajiv Gandhi’s body after the blast. Bodies of others were identified after great efforts. How can we just let the perpetrators involved in this ghastly misdemeanour, go? What Mr Rahul Gandhi needs to realize is that a PM belongs more to the country than the family. Be it assassination of Indira Gandhi by her own bodyguards, or mysterious death of Lal Bahadur Shastri just after the Tashkent accords. Deaths of national leaders have always given a big blow to India’s stability. They have always bred turmoil and consternation, in public.

Since we are discussing the mercy petitions filed by the convicts, not adding the contents of their petition would be a blatant bias. Perarivalan, has stated that he has been in incarceration for more than 25 years, and it’s more than enough for his crimes. Even Nalini, Murugan (Nalini’s husband) and Jayakumar had a similar appeal to make. What needs to be added is here, all convicts(along with 22 others) who have filed the petition were awarded death penalty under TADA. But later on, only 4 remained with death penalties.

Sonia Gandhi intervened in the year 2000 and had asked the court to provide respite to Nalini and convert her death sentence into life imprisonment. Other three were to be hanged on September 9, 2011, after Pratibha Patil rejected the mercy petition. But, Madras Court put a stay on hanging and in 2014 SC quashed death penalty on grounds of “inordinate delays “ on behalf of UPA led Centre government in hearing pleas.

These killers would have been long dead if mercy petitions were not entertained. Now, to release all of them should be seen as just letting them go. Many convicts in India, are waiting for their turn to just start their trial. Here, not once but multiple times mercy petitions are heard, discussed and accepted. It seems that the Congress party has kept alive Rajiv Gandhi‘s assassination case till the times, electoral gains were in offing. Once, you have reaped benefits, it’s time to project self as an archetype of compassion and an ardent apostle of peace.

Irony must have wept in silence when Rahul Gandhi’s Congress formed an alliance with DMK in Tamil Nadu. Rajiv Gandhi had accused DMK and its supremo Karunanidhi to be in liaison with LTTE chief. In fact, many reports say that Karunanidhi along with his ally Vaiko(Who left DMK in 1993) used to communicate with Prabhakaran. Vaiko had even visited LTTE camps in Northern Sri Lanka, allegedly back-stabbed Karunanidhi by asking Prabhakaran to help him succeed the DMK after annulling Karunanidhi.

Image
Vaiko with Prabhakaran

Karunanidhi never regarded Prabhakaran as a terrorist and even called him his ‘good friend’, in 2009. The SJP(R) government had even dismissed DMK government after 1989 Tamil Nadu state elections. The Chandra Shekhar led government, which was on outside support from Congress(I), had cited degradation of state law and collusion between outlawed LTTE and DMK as grounds for dismissal.

From time-to-time when Congress party was in alliance with Jayalalitha led AIADMK, called DMK and Karunanidhi as ‘anti-national’. A term now Congress says is used by BJP to stifle voices of dissent. You can expect NGOs and placard activists to go gaga over convicts release. They have been instrumental in helping convicts with their mercy petitions. They will be called upon the podium and asked to narrate tales of the imaginary ordeal they had to go through. How predictive, isn’t it?

Release of these perpetrators sets a very dangerous precedent when it comes to national security. A squad coming from foreign land and with aid of local like-minded people, executes an assassin plot and are freed after a certain time! That is not something any nation should allow.

The BJP led central government is opposing the mercy petition in Supreme Court. It said that it will have ‘international ramifications’. The BJP government is trying hard not to let the convicts go free. President Kovind had in June rejected the TN government’s proposal to release the convicts. But Rajiv Gandhi’s own party seems to be least bothered. This whole scenario translates just to one thing that, you can assassinate a PM and still be heard and freed after some time. National security, our sovereignty just seem to be hollow words in Indian political lexicon.

Politicians keep changing their stance from time to time for petty political gains. In politics, words and relations just stop making sense. But when national security and the international perception of sovereignty is at stake, petty political goals need to be kept aside.

There is still time, we can send a strong message to the world. We won’t ever tolerate a foreign organization or a country giving orders to us on how to be and what to do, that sending assassins or using violence to thwart our democratic institutions, shall not be taken lightly. It needs to be seen, how the governor responds to the pleas, but let us not be very surprised of all perpetrators are released from jail and Congress uses this for their political propaganda.

Srinagar, September 14, 2018.

On Wednesday night, a joint team of J-K Police, Army and paramilitary forces cordoned off the Teliyan neighbourhood of Sopore town after receiving specific inputs about the presence of militants.

Two Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militants were killed in an encounter in north Kashmir’s Sopore town on Thursday, police said. While two Aadhaar cards have been recovered from the militants, police said that they were foreigners.

“From the incriminating material recovered from the encounter site, the killed terrorists have been identified as foreigners namely Ali alias Athar and Zia-ur-Rehman,” police said. “They were affiliated to proscribed terror outfit JeM.”

Ali was a top Jaish commander who was behind the IED blast in Sopore on January 6 in which four policemen were killed, police said. Both militants were involved in attacks on security establishments, police said.

On Wednesday night, a joint team of J-K Police, Army and paramilitary forces cordoned off the Teliyan neighbourhood of Sopore town after receiving specific inputs about the presence of militants.

As the joint team zeroed in on the target house on Thursday, militants opened fire and tried to break the security cordon. The joint team retaliated, triggering an encounter in which both the trapped militants were killed.

According to the Aadhaar cards recovered from the militants, the two were residents of Kupwara, identified as Sahil Ahmad Dar and Mohd Yaseen, police said, adding that they are trying to ascertain how the Aadhaar cards were procured.

While Sopore town is seen as a militant stronghold, Thursday’s encounter was the first in the town in over four years.

We don't even have to go down to the IP address level to figure out who provided them with Aadhaar cards. When a person enrols for Aadhar, the agency/operator/kiosk's data is also captured. And at one point, the actual operator also gives his/her thumb impression. So it is very easy to track the source from where the application was made. What would be difficult is that the Aadhaar card itself is "photo shopped" i.e some random number is shown and the terrorists details are added.

Sachin saar,

I said ip address because of the fairly easily available aadhar s/w patch that when applied allows bypassing of all checks and can be used from any location.

A $35 patch reportedly let anyone in the world generate India’s Aadhaar IDs

Over the past few years, India’s Aadhaar system – which grants citizens a unique ID and access to government services – has come under fire for overshooting its prescribed applications and lack of data security. It’s not out of the woods yet, as Huffington Post India reports that it’s discovered a software patch that could have compromised the software used to enrol Aadhaar users and allow anyone in the world to register an ID.

That’s worrying, because people rely on their Aadhaar IDs to receive services and benefits like subsidized rations, pensions, and scholarships. Fake IDs can allow people to scam the system and score these benefits, while placing an additional strain on government funds and machinery.

Aadhaar Hack Existed From 2016, Confirms Expert Who Reviewed Patch
Dilemma – This is the one word that every cyber crime reporter and a researcher faces when they come across a cyber crime. The dilemma exist because of various reasons:

Is an initial tip-off even credible enough to investigate?
Can the investigation be done in a manner that does not lead one to actually perform the crime?
Can we gather credible evidence through investigations?
Is the evidence gathering process itself is legal?
Were the authorities notified about a cyber crime, so that they can initiate remedial measures, to address the issue?

The Huffington Post investigation into the cracked ECMP software is a cyber crime report and hence faced all these dilemmas, before it was eventually published. That it took three months and more from the initial tip-off is primarily because of these dilemmas. As a security researcher who worked with them during the investigation (July - September 2018), I am duty-bound to explain to readers how I worked through these dilemmas, as my involvement in Aadhaar pre-dates the HuffPost investigation.

The primary motivation for my involvement in the ECMP software hack is that ideologically, on national security, I am a hawk and my personal opinions on all other things are irrelevant. I have also made several public offers (here and here) to engage with UIDAI pro-bono, which were not responded to.

Initial Tip-Off
The first tip-off that the cracked ECMP software exists, was not a tip-off in the classical sense. It is a full-fledged investigation done by the UP Special Task force (STF), into a crime gang that specialised in creating fake Aadhaar cards. Media reports of the investigation, dated exactly one year before, have claimed the “gang hacked secure source code” and claimed that this would not have been possible without the “collusion of one or more UIDAI officials”.

Now, “collusion of one or more UIDAI officials” was a very serious charge coming from the Special Task force. No media outlet even followed it up – the story was never investigated further and died.

The collusion angle, however, piqued my interest. A google search of all media reports pointed to evidence that the “hacked software” was available for limited use, as early as Feb 2016, a full year and half before the UP STF caught the gang.

So what is the patch? What did it do? Who made it? These are questions that have not been fully answered and it is important that these came out in the public domain.

Observer
Our next breakthrough came around May 2018, when Asia Times obtained access into the WhatsApp groups of enrolment operators who were sold the cracked ECMP software because of a whistleblower. The Asia Times story was a breakthrough because it taught us where to look. It was also very similar to the UP STF story:

There was a cracked software.
It was used to bypass security measures.
It was widely used.

The last point about it being “widely used” was crucial because if it was widely used by operators who have no technical expertise, then there has to be a training program. That is when Asia Times’ South Asia editor, Saikat Datta and I had a brain wave. It has to be on YouTube, because the platform is quite popular in India.

So we did a simple google search again, and found hundreds of training videos on YouTube, which explained how to use the crack. One video, however was pretty good. It showed us the step-by-step lowdown on how the crack worked.

From a security researcher’s point of view, trying to understand how the crime was committed, this can’t get any better. It is a confession, recorded live and uploaded to a public channel and has not been taken down yet. However, a confession is still not good enough evidence.

Saikat and I needed the patch to do a forensic analysis, but we did not have it.

The UIDAI, however, issued its traditional denial, which in a way confirmed that we were on the right track – but neither of us could go any further.

Provable Evidence
When an anonymous whistleblower sent the patch to HuffPost, they sent a copy to me because of my previous involvement in reporting these issues as a security researcher. The patch is a ZIP file and constitutes evidence similar to finding a hair, nail or a fingerprint at a crime scene. It had to be corroborated with other evidence that I already knew of, such as:

The YouTube Videos
Various Police FIRs filed on fake Aadhaar scams
On-ground confirmation that it works

Forensic analysis of the patch was easy work (40 hours is easy work in security research) because it involved decompilation and reading through the JAVA source code. For non-technical readers, the enrolment software is written in the JAVA programming language and the generated bytecode should at least have been obfuscated. That UIDAI chose not to do this is simply baffling, as it made the patch-maker’s job easy.

It also made my life easy, because I can decompile the patch and read through its source code as well. To put it simply, that the top secret source code that UP Police reported was inaccessible to anyone but UIDAI, is an inaccurate claim. Anyone who could download the enrolment software, can decompile it and read through the source code. (Yes, it is that bad)

Analysing the patch, I came to the conclusions that was reported in the HuffPost story. The conclusions were disturbing enough to reach out to National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC). A bit about the NCIIPC is important for readers to understand. NCIIPC is the legally appointed nodal agency for all cyber-security issues related to sectors designated as critical.

A vulnerability in any software is a bug. For reporting it, there are standard procedures and format, called a bug report. NCIIPC always has been responsive to security researchers filing bug reports and usually acknowledge the receipt of the bug report almost instantly. They take it up internally with the organisation that is responsible and drive it to closure, which takes time.

However, from a security researcher’s point of view, there is no further need to follow up with NCIIPC once an acknowledgement of receipt is received, since they have a good reputation of taking it up with the concerned organisation internally.

Coming back to the patch, once the issue was reported to NCIIPC and they acknowledged the receipt of the bug report, there is not much a security researcher can do but wait for it to get resolved by the UIDAI.

Peer Reviews
From HuffPost’s point of view, one researcher’s analysis is not sufficient. It needs to be peer-reviewed and vetted by other security researchers to withstand scrutiny. So they reached out to others with the patch, who came to the same conclusions that I did, which was further corroborated by Police FIRs, YouTube Videos and also on-ground checks with enrolment operators. These operators confirmed to them that the patch still works a day before the report came out.

That the patch still worked a day before the report came out is the most disturbing part of the story.

Software hacks happen all the time and responsible organisations ensure that they get fixed once issues are reported through other, safer back-channels. It is evident that so far, UIDAI has not acted responsibly.

February 2016 was the first media report that pointed out the issue.
September 2017 was when the FIR by UP STF was filed.
September 2018 was when HuffPost reported the issue.

For two years, UIDAI did nothing, in spite of overwhelming evidence that the use of the software patch had grown exponentially. Instead, they tried to keep a lid on the problem and nothing else.

The Way Forward

I started with the dilemmas that researchers face while investigating cyber crime, and would like to analyse the HuffPost story too along those lines.

Was the initial tip-off credible?
Yes, as it came from the UP Police itself.
Did we actually commit any crime, during the investigation?

No. The YouTube Videos that Saikat and I found were confessions uploaded in the public domain. We were observers, not participants.
Was the evidence credible enough?

Yes. The patch was analysed and the conclusions were corroborated by multiple security researchers. Further, we also have FIRs filed by police officers in other states, YouTube Videos, and statements from enrolment operators.

Is the evidence gathering process legal?

Yes it is. Neither me nor HuffPost reporters did a fake enrolment that resulted in the generation of an Aadhaar number. The patch was sent to HuffPost via an anonymous whistleblower, as far as I am aware.
Were the authorities notified about the crime?

Yes they were. Multiple emails were sent to UIDAI over time, as early as May 2018. Further, UIDAI officials themselves were involved in some of the investigations done by the local enforcement agencies. So they were more than aware of the issue, for quite some time.

Cyber crime is a hard topic to even write about in long form for non-technical readers. A clever snark on Twitter or a sound bite on TV might be an attractive option to get eyeballs, but does not help much in the long term. Given the explosion of I-T, cyber is the most urgent policy problem of our times.

As far as I am aware, the only agency with proven capability to do this and also has constitutional backing is NCIIPC. While the UIDAI may be the problem child that gets everyone’s attention by throwing temper tantrums, NCIIPC may yet become the quiet achiever, if given the right backing.

We should encourage if the Paks want to registered themselves to Adhaar.

If there are hacks, which allow for fake registration, it is even better. Idiots who want to put in fake names in to Adhaar, along with the their biometeric, will always be known by that identity for their entire life.

I very much encourage it.

Huffington post & their love towards India is well known. I have not gone through the details, but here are a few official press releases from UIDAI. PS: I expect more such stories to come up, because there are a number of Aadhar/UIDAI related cases now pending final hearing at Hon.SC.

We would need to worry, if some one managed a backdoor in to the Adhaar database and is able to Update an existing biometeric entry. This way either the same person can have multiple biometric or a single biometric is used by multiple person.

It is straight forward to handle such a issue. You created multiple database nodes (something like blockchain) and verify the integrity of the data. I am pretty such a mechanism is already present.

The huffington post says lo-behold anyone can create Adhaar accounts bypassing some vendor validation. What difference it makes? I would say Adhaar registration client should be released as general app, instead of vendors.

Identity validation adds nothing, other than delay to the process. Adhaar is the identity, once you record it.

Hope the Maharashtra Police is building a water tight case, including taking a statement under Sec. 164 Cr.PC from this Pahad Singh chap. Looks like GoI is now moving in a new direction to deal with an old menace; the Naxals. For quite some time every one had got focused on Kashmir, where now things looks like being under control.

Hizb ‘start-up’ foiled in Assam - The Hindu
The police in Assam have arrested more alleged members of the extremist group Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM), believed to have been planning to launch a disruptive “start-up” in the State.

On Monday, the police in central Assam’s Nagaon and adjoining Hojai districts, arrested three men — Riyazuddin Bhuyan, Joynal Ahmed and Baharul Islam. Sleuths, police said, had been keeping a watch on the trio after inputs that they had assisted HM operative Qamar-uz-Zaman during his visit to the State in August.

Qamar, hailing from Jamunamukh in the Hojai district, was arrested last week from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh. Four of his associates, including one from Meghalaya, had been arrested till Sunday.

Cashing in

The police said the HM had sent Qamar to Assam to radicalise Muslim youth, possibly to cash in on a feeling of victimisation because of the exclusion of many from the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC).

“They had plans to launch a start-up in Hojai district. We had kept tabs on the suspects but did not have concrete evidence on their connection with the HM. The arrests were made after collecting technical evidence,” Ankur Jain, Hojai district Superintendent of Police, said.

He did not specify the nature of the start-up the HM or Qamar’s associates had been planning to set up.

Tracing contacts

Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP) Kuladhar Saikia, who is monitoring the investigation, said police traced the people Qamar had contacted or moved around with during his “recruitment trip” in August.

Qamar had avoided his home in Jamunamukh but stayed in the house of one Shahnawaz Alam arrested last week. Police said Qamar had also used Riyazuddin’s motorcycle to move around during his stay.

Qamar is believed to have been radicalised in Kashmir, where he had gone on some business a few years ago.

Police came to know about his joining HM from his photo, in fatigues and holding an AK-47 rifle, uploaded on social media.

Assam had a few short-lived Islamist groups that allegedly worked for Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Bangladesh’s Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) to help militant outfits such as the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) in the 1990s.

For a startup to work, you need initiative, capital, motivated individuals, a nurturing ecosystem of friends/family, mentors, access to information etc.

Interesting how all these elements are present in Islamic societies, when the startup is of the "Jihad" variety. In contrast, Hindus can put up with any amount of grievances (like 1000 years of brutal conquest), but you won't find them easily launching such startups.

Maoists kill a sitting MLA and an ex-MLA in AP.

https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/cit ... 921235.cms
The incident took place during the ultra's weekly celebrations of CPI Maoists Formation Day. Maoists gave a call to celebrate the event for a week till September 27.

Around 60 Maoists, including huge number of women cadres, were involved in the attack.
I feel that Urban naxalites arrested are given ample cover by SC and media. I think that their lordships indirectly lead to such brazenness by their actions. If that is the case, aren't they liable in anyway? Or even this line of questioning is wrong?

Looks like a calculated hit job by political and Urban Naxals. TDP will be in vulnerable position given election coming in soon to take any strong action with AP-Orissa joint police group which has been successful to contain Naxal activity around border last 4 years.

The media seems to be ignoring, not just downplaying, this awful incident of the killing of two TD people, including a serving MLA. It is pretty major, needless to say.

Can you imagine the uproar if some right wing fringe group killed these figures? There would be massive outrage expressed in print media and TV networks, and justifiably. Not even the Newshour or Republic TV has had a discussion on the matter. You would think they would, to illustrate the perfidy and criminality of the Naxals.

Right now "urban naxals" are not having a good time, and so their best friends the "secular" media in India is downplaying Maoist violence. Because of people know more about Maoist violence, naturally the Urban Naxals are not going to get much support.

Koregaon-Bhima case: SC refuses to interfere with arrests of five activists.
The division bench in its 2:1 majority verdict has allowed the police to continue their investigations and also extended the house arrest for four more weeks. Again Justice Chandrachud dissented with the other two judges.

12 more AK-47s smuggled from Jabalpur ordnance depot seized
The Munger police along with the help of Special Task Force recovered a huge cache of 12 AK-47 assault rifles, smuggled from Central Ordnance Depot (COD) at Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh from village Wardha under Mufassil police station area in Munger district on Friday

The recovery of rifles on Friday took the total count of AK-47s seized in Munger till now to 20.

Police sources said recovery became possible after arrest of arms smuggler Tanveer Alam. "Tanveer is Mohammad Shamsher’s nephew. Shamsher was arrested from Wardha on September 6 leading to recovery of three assault rifles from his possession",a senior IPS officer said preferring anonymity.

Shamsher’s brother and retired army personnel Niyazur Rahman was also arrested by a team of Munger police from army’s filed ammunition depot (FAD) at Bagdogra in West Bengal on September 8. He was presently working as a guard on contract there.
