Seems to be an insider job and there is also confusion on whether the theft happened from the ship or from the ship yard. The ship is still not with the navy and the computer fitted in the under construction ship may not have any critical data of the Navy. But if these hard disks were used by the ship yard engineers to work on some financial or technical information of the ship, it may lead to some serious security breaches.

India is planning to set up one of the world's largest facial recognition systems, potentially a lucrative opportunity for surveillance companies and a nightmare for privacy advocates who fear it will lead to a Chinese-style Orwellian state.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government will open bids next month to build a system to centralize facial recognition data captured through surveillance cameras across India. It would link up with databases containing records for everything from passports to fingerprints to help India's depleted police force identify criminals, missing persons and dead bodies.
The government says the move is designed to help one of the world's most understaffed police forces, which has one officer for every 724 citizens - well below global norms. It also could be a boon for companies: TechSci Research estimates India's facial recognition market will grow sixfold by 2024 to $4.3 billion, nearly on par with China.
But the project is also ringing alarm bells in a nation with no data privacy laws and a government that just shut down the internet for the last seven weeks in the key state of Kashmir to prevent unrest. While India is still far from implementing a system that matches China's ability to use technology to control the population, the lack of proper safeguards opens the door for abuses.
"We're the only functional democracy which will set up such as system without any data protection or privacy laws," said Apar Gupta, a Delhi-based lawyer and executive director of the Internet Freedom Foundation, a non-profit group whose members successfully lobbied the government in 2015 to ensure net neutrality and reject platforms like Facebook Inc.'s Free Basics. "It's like a gold rush for companies seeking large unprotected databases."
Black Market
A draft data protection bill presented to the government last year still hasn't been approved by the cabinet or introduced into parliament. The country has already had problems implementing Aadhaar, one of the world's biggest biometric databases linking everything from bank accounts to income tax filings, which been plagued by reports of data leaks and the growth of a black market for personal information.
So far, not much is known about which companies might bid on the facial-recognition system. Minutes of a meeting with potential bidders, obtained by the Internet Freedom Foundation through a right to information request, showed unidentified companies sought clarifications on integrating facial recognition data with state databases and whether it should be able to identify people with plastic surgery.
Vasudha Gupta, a spokeswoman for the Home Ministry, didn't respond to an email seeking comments about the system.
For some in the police force, the system will be an essential tool to fight crime if implemented properly. India has seen more than 100 terrorist attacks in the last three decades, including one on luxury hotels and a train station in Mumbai that killed 166 people in 2008.
'Powerful Tool'
Nilabh Kishore, who headed a unit fighting organized crime in the state of Punjab until last year, had success against gangsters after he set up a system linking data from police stations across the state.
"A system that can identify criminals is invaluable - facial recognition is a powerful tool," said Kishore, who is now deputy inspector general of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police. "But human intentions are also very important. You can make the best of technology, but if human intentions are wrong it can be a tool for misuse."
That's particularly a worry for vulnerable minority groups that have long faced discrimination in India. Lower castes and tribals account for about a quarter of the population but constitute 34% of India's prisoners, according to the National Dalit Movement for Justice.
In January, the Delhi High Court said it was "unacceptable" that facial recognition had not helped trace any of the 5,000 children missing from the city in three years. Earlier this month, photos and phone numbers from a Madurai city police facial recognition database in the southern state of Tamil Nadu were leaked online.
Surveillance Threat
The threat of foreign spying is also persistent. Last month a federal government think tank criticized the local administration in Delhi for hiring the Indian arm of Chinese firm Hikvision to set up 150,000 CCTVs, saying the move could spur illegal hacking and data leaks to the Chinese government.
Foreign surveillance companies operating in India include CP Plus, Dahua, Panasonic Corp., Bosch Security Systems, Honeywell International Inc., and D-Link India Ltd. Many Indian companies won't be able to bid on the facial-recognition system because the current tender requires them to meet standards established by the U.S. National Institute of Science and Technology, according to Atul Rai, chief executive officer of Staqu Technologies, an Indian startup.
Rai, whose company has developed facial recognition for eight local police forces, said India doesn't have the same quality cameras as China - making it harder to meet the goal of being able to identify any person with an integrated system. He also said it would be more difficult to implement a national network in India because state governments are responsible for law and order under its constitution.
"But if this one happens in line with the government's plan, it should be a China-like system," Rai said. "Any powerful country wants to be like China when it comes to using technology to monitor people - even western countries."

Five people have so far been arrested by Punjab Police in connection with the drone drops.
At least eight drone sorties, carrying a total of 80 kg of weapons (arms and ammunition), were sent across the border into Punjab by Pakistan-based Khalistani terror groups between September 9 and 16, officials in security agencies and the Punjab Police have confirmed on condition of anonymity.
The entire consignment, using the Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF) network, was supported by Pakistan’s spy agency Inter Services Intelligence and orchestrated through Germany and Lahore; the ultimate aim — to fuel terror attacks in Jammu & Kashmir.
The details of these drops have emerged following investigations that led to and following the September 22 weapons seizure at Tarn Taran district; the eight payloads were dropped in Amritsar and Tarn Taran.
Police recover a half-burnt drone that was used for smuggling weapons into Punjab from Pakistan.
Five people have so far been arrested by Punjab Police in connection with the drone drops, with one 22-year-old Subhdeep held on Tuesday. Investigators said he was from Amritsar district and was radicalised by the prime accused in the case, Mann Singh, and another accused, Akashdeep, in Amritsar jail. The other four people, suspected to belong to a terror module, were arrested from the outskirts of village Chohla Sahib in Tarn Taran on Sunday. They were using a white Maruti Swift with a Punjab registration number.
The investigation involved multiple agencies – the Punjab Police, central security agencies, the Border Security Force, the Indian Air Force – and prima facie found that multiple Chinese commercial drones with 10 kg payloads have been used in the weapons drop operations across the border. The drones, the investigation reveals, may have been launched from locations 2 km inside Pakistan and made to travel the distance of five kilometres at a height of 2,000 feet, and then dropped off the weapons after descending to 1200 ft. The payload was slung from the platform using Chinese mountaineering ropes.

With drone activity also being seen in Punjab’s Ferozepur district, the IAF and BSF have been asked by the Punjab police to intercept these unmanned aerial vehicles through low-level radars and destroy them. Officials fear that they could also be used to carry and drop off bombs.
The interrogation of those arrested has revealed that KZF’s Germany-based operative Gurmeet Singh Bagga in coordination with his Pakistan-based chief Ranjeet Singh aka Neeta have made deliveries of at least four weapons, grenades, electronics, and fake currency through drones. The deliveries were made on the intervening nights of September 6/7, 9/10 and the last one on 15/16. The last drone crashed at Rajoke Village, Khalra police station, in Tarn Taran, near a border drain which is 2km from the fencing on the international border with Pakistan. The entire operation came to light after the discovery of the burnt drone, whose eight Chinese batteries were stripped off by the accused on instructions from across the border. “ It has also been revealed that such deliveries took place on four different dates, mostly between 9.30 pm and 10.30 pm with the drone making two sorties within an hour,” said a senior Punjab Police official. As many as five AK-47 rifles, which weigh about four kilograms with magazine, four Chinese pistols , nine HE grenades, Rs 10 lakh fake currency, 1000 rounds of ammunition and two electronic receivers were recovered by the police from the accused.
The main concern of Indian security agencies is the revelation that entire consignment was meant for Islamist groups in Kashmir. “ We are not very clear as to how many other consignment has made their way into Kashmir using similar modus operandi and with the help of Pakistan based Sikh terrorists,” said a senior security official.

It speaks poorly of RAW than Thai judicial system. Thai judicial system is corrupt. RAW failed to connect with the right powers to get him deported to India. How Pak Sabotaged Thai System To Stop Dawood Aide’s Extradition To India.
Pakistan’s spy agency, Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), has done it yet again—playing the system in Thailand and using bribery to get a favourable court verdict. The person in the eye of the storm in this case is Syed Muzakir Muddassar Hussain, alias Munna Jhingra, a close aide of gangster Dawood Ibrahim and a suspect in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.
A Thai court of appeal has recently overturned a lower court order that had okayed Jhingra’s extradition to India. Jhingra has seven cases against him in Mumbai, ranging from murder to possessing illegal weapons.
Intelligence sources have told SNI that the ISI colluded with D-Company and a bribe of nearly THB 100 million was paid to get Jingra declared a Pakistani national, which would prevent his extradition to India that would have helped prove Dawood’s presence in Pakistan, a fact Pakistan has long denied.
Mia Kasim, a Pak businessman dealing with import/export of carpets in Thailand, is said to have played a key role in the plot. He roped in a lawyer, Col. Sanhakit Bumrungsuksawad, who has served nearly 30 years in the Royal Thai Police, to leverage his contacts in the political and judicial set-ups., sources said, adding that Sanhakit and another lawyer Pawarit Phudpong finalised the monetary deals to influence the court verdict.
Muhammad Sohail Qasmani, a hawala agent linked to D-Company, apparently played an important role in transferring the funds. He was briefly detained at a Thai airport on September 8 while coming from Malaysia. Local security agencies had suspicion that he had come to transfer funds to ISI operatives at the Pakistani embassy in Bangkok.
According to Thai judicial rules, a court of appeal cannot decide on the basis of the evidence which had already been presented to a lower court and can rule only if there is new evidence. But in this case, the appeals court based its verdict on mere statements given by Pak embassy, not on documentary evidence which is part of the case, said sources.
In the year 2000, Jhingra was sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with an assassination bid on Chhota Rajan, an Indian underworld operative who was part of the D-Company but later fell out with Dawood, in Bangkok after entering Thailand on a fake Pakistani passport in the name of Mohd. Saleem.
Ever since his conviction, ISI used bribery and its contacts in the Thai Foreign Ministry in getting five royal pardons, thereby remitting his jail sentence from 35 years to 16 years. Jhingra was released from prison on December 27, 2016.
As an extradition request against Jhingra was already pending from India (India made a formal extradition request in March 2012), Thai authorities arrested him again. India submitted a dossier in the Thai court, including fingerprints in support of Jhingra’s Indian nationality. The detailed evidence submitted to court also included DNA samples, college-leaving certificate and copies of FIRs registered against him in Mumbai.
ISI arranged a fake Pakistani passport to counter India’s claim on Jhingra’s nationality. It’s also said to have warned the Thai foreign office that Jhingra’s extradition to India would lead to a major diplomatic row between Pakistan and Thailand.
However, based on evidence, the lower court affirmed that Jhingra is an Indian national and ordered his extradition to India. Rattled by the court order, Pakistan, sources said, even planned to get Jhingra killed in Thai jail but could not get it done. In August 2018, it appealed against the lower court order.
Pakistan’s dubious record of making false claims and fabricating documents has been demonstrated earlier as well, in the case of Ibrahim Koko, a Myanmarese national and drug peddler, who too is associated with D-Company. Koko was arrested on charges of running a drug syndicate in Thailand. The Pakistani embassy in Bangkok had sought his extradition on the grounds that he is a Pakistani national. However, subsequent to his extradition in 2015, a Pakistani court ruled that he was travelling on fake Pakistani documents and should be deported back to Thailand where he should complete his remaining jail term. Finding themselves in an embarrassing situation, Thai authorities have not yet accepted Ibrahim Koko’s return to Thailand.
But that didn’t stop Pakistan from trying the same trick in the case of Jhingra, who is an Indian national and a resident of Sayyed Muddsar Chawl near Toofani Kirana Stores, Prem Nagar, Jogeshwari (East), Mumbai-60.

IMO it is not correct to blame any agency here as the lower court had ruled in our favour.
Pak might have used money + big brother influence to get appeal in their favour. Thais must pay for this by way of some tourism ban or something.

Yes, this event only goes to show how dangerous a compromised judiciary can be in our country or elsewhere. We cannot trust our own judiciary to be straight - recall the judge who overthrew Jayalalitha’s conviction on a whim and the one who is to have shielded PC for the past couple of years. Why? We cannot attack friendly nation's for what is effectively a mishandling by RAW and our embassy there. Everyone knows Thai judiciary is corrupt and under Army influence. If MEA and RAW just focussed on building a legal case and sat on their behinds, they don't sound competent atleast in this case. Accountability must be fixed. They cannot only take credit and divert blame elsewhere.

The only other possibility is that bhikaris got their Ilon brother to help them out. The influence lonnbrother has on SEA nations is much higher than ours, especially in Thailand where millions of Chinese tourists keep the economy going.

I do not agree that this was all about money. Thai and Vietnam plays India very well. The exports growth of Vietnam is a proof of this. We should protect our market and use such situation. This is all China's doing and nothing else. No one is friendly and everyone of the asean countries will drop India and go with China on every opportunity.schinnas wrote:Why?
