Hamid Ansari And PFI: The Iran Connection
Hamid Ansari And PFI: The Iran Connection

Jihad, PFI, Hamid Ansari, and his years as India’s ambassador to Iran.

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave the outgoing vice-president Hamid Ansari, what was perceived mostly as a left-handed compliment, perhaps he knew what he was doing. He told Ansari that he was now free to pursue his own ‘fundamental thought process’. Ansari did exactly that and he chose to attend the conference of Popular Front of India (PFI), a radical Islamist organisation.

However, the common strands that connect the ‘fundamental thought process’ of the former vice-president and the fundamentalist organisation may be more than sharing of dais in public.

The reason why Ansari was invited to the PFI conference may go beyond the fact that he was former vice-president. He had served as Indian ambassador to Iran from 1990 to 1992. Now it has become widely known through the book Mission R & AW, written by a former high official of RAW, R K Yadav, how non-cooperative and even detrimental Ansari was to Indian intelligence operations in Iran. According to Yadav, Ansari was non-cooperative and unmoved when a RAW agent working in Tehran was abducted by Iranian intelligence. It took the efforts of Atal Behari Vajpayee, then leader of the opposition, to nudge prime minister Narasimha Rao into forcing Iran to release the abducted Indian official. However, this jeopardised Indian operations in Iran. Yadav explains:

Most of the operations of R&AW received setback after this incident since its operatives became insecure due to inaction of Ansari. R&AW operatives had penetrated inside the Qom religious centre to monitor the activities of some Kashmiri elements whose activities were detrimental to the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir but this incident made them to abort further infiltration inside that centre at that juncture.

R K Yadav, Mission R&AW, Manas Publications, 2014

According to Yadav, Ansari also told Muhammad Umar, an Indian security official posted in Tehran to remain silent, when the latter was approached by Iranian intelligence to cooperate with them. On his refusal to cooperate, he was abducted and tortured. Ansari strangely remained silent and asked Umar not to make it an issue.

The years Ansari was posted in Iran was a very crucial period for international jihadi apparatus. It was the time when the global network of jihadi organisations, which we see today, were getting forged. Tehran was an important player in the unfolding scenario. So the setback R&AW suffered during those two crucial years provided a great boost to jihad in Jammu and Kashmir.

In this connection, it is pertinent to observe how Iran has been, despite being a Shia state, an important instigator of jihadi movement in India which are largely Sunni-fundamentalist. The history is decades long and it starts with Kashmir.

Organisationally, it was Jammat-e-Islami (JeI) that was founded with the aim of establishing a pan-Islamic state sans national boundaries. After Partition JeI had to deal with the reality of India and Pakistan as two separate nation states with a grave conflict in Kashmir. While a transnational JeI established ‘JeI-J&K’ on the Indian side of Jammu and Kashmir, they set up ‘JeI-Azad Kashmir’ on the side of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Dr Mumtaz Ahmad, professor of political science at Hampton University in his paper on Islamic fundamentalism in South Asia observes:

During the first three decades of its existence, the Kashmir Jamaat operated mainly as a religious revivalist movement and did not actively participate in state politics. ...It was only after the Iranian revolution in 1979 that the Jamaat-i-Islami Kashmir came into the forefront of the political struggle for ‘the liberation of Kashmir’ and for ‘Islamic revolution’. In August 1980, the leader of the student wing of the Jamaat in Kashmir politically called upon Kashmiri youth to work for an Iranian-type Islamic revolution in Kashmir in order to achieve ‘independence’ from India. This call was issued a few days before a proposed international conference to discuss the relevance of the Iranian revolutionary experience for the Kashmiri Muslims. The Indian government reacted swiftly and banned the conference. Foreign guests including an Iranian official delegation, were sent back from Srinagar airport.

Mumtaj Ahmed, Islamic Fundamentalism in South Asia (in ‘Fundamentalisms Observed’, Vol-1, University of Chicago Press, 1994)

Here, perhaps, we see for the first time the tendency of Iran to join hands with radical Sunni movement to fight against a kafir nation. But there was a long way to go. Inspired and supported by Iran, Sudanese leader Hasan Al Turabi (1932-2016) had launched Popular Arab and Islamic Congress (PAIC). It provided a global platform for all the jihadists to meet, discuss and form coordinated strategies. By December 1990, Iran was ready to overlook the Sunni-Shia difference and support the mostly Sunni dominated international jihadi efforts, which were taking shape in Sudan.

The year 1991 saw many important events that would shape the transnational jihad for decades to come. In April that year, Turabi organised a conference for leaders with a pan-Islamic vision. Yosef Bodansky in his study of Osama bin Laden elaborates how Sudan-Iran coordination started taking place:

The conference in Khartoum also established the first real Sunni Islamist revolutionary international, called the Popular International Organization (PIO). Turabi stressed in his address that the PIO’s objective “is to work out a global action plan in order to challenge and defy the tyrannical West, because Allah can no longer remain in our world, in the face of the absolute materialistic power.” The PIO established in Khartoum, a permanent council comprising fifty members, each of whom represented one of the fifty countries where Islamic liberation struggles were taking place. Tehran was duly impressed with the zeal and commitment displayed during the Islamic Arab Peoples’ Conference and offered Turabi professional help to expedite the spread of the Islamist revolution. Most important was the Iranian assistance in establishing a headquarters for the PIO. Toward this end, Colonel Al-Fatih Urwah of Sudanese intelligence travelled to Tehran within days after the conference.
Yossef Bodansky, ‘Bin Laden: The Man Who Declared War on America’, 2011
African historians Robert Oakley Collins and Millard Burr document the presence of Indian Islamists in Khartoum conference:

The militant mujahideen from the Jama’at al-Islami of Pakistan and India, the Hizb-i Islami and Jamiat-i Islami of Afghanistan, and the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen of Kashmir soon joined PAIC. ...Eighteen Kashmiri Islamists would receive six months of “highly specialised terrorist training” in Sudan that was personally supervised by “Sudanese leaders Turabi and Mustafa Osman[Ismail].
Millard Burr and Robert Oakley Collins, ‘Revolutionary Sudan: Hasan Al-Turabi and the Islamist State’, 1989-2000, BRILL, 2003
Soon Turabi visited Pakistan and was ready to hand over the trainees resulting in Hizb-ul Mujahideen of Kashmir having 300 Sudan-trained jihadists in their ranks. The same year Maj Gen Mohsin Reza'i of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a branch of Iran's Armed Forces, provided a detailed blueprint for transnational Islamist cooperation in India's Kashmir region:

If there is unity among Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan, this will strengthen Muslim solidarity and enable the peoples of Soviet Central Asia and Kashmir to join in. China would also welcome such a development, but I am not sure about the Indian view, although there are a lot of people in India (ie 150 million Muslims) who share a similar heritage with us.
According to one report, "following the organisational principles recommended by Tehran and Khartoum, the (Kashmir) movement has transformed into Kashmiri Jammat-i-Islami, under Abdul-Majid Dar, with a quasi-legal character emphasising educational and social activism, with the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen as the clandestine terrorist arm.”

It was in 1993 that Markaz Daw-ul-Irshad (MDI) was brought into Kashmir. MDI was originally founded in Pakistan and had fought along with other jihadist groups in Afghanistan. It was an anti-democratic Sunni group. Yet it was in Tehran, with the support of ISI, A G Lone of J&K People's Conference and Tajmiul Islam of Al Barq were brought together with the officials of MDI. With their acceptance of MDI, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) as the armed branch of MDI started its operations in Jammu and Kashmir. By 1994, there were about 300 veteran jihadists from Afghan Jihad in the J&K field. In November 1995, former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto visited Iran. According to Bodansky, the agreement between Bhutto and Tehran "stipulated an increase in VEVAK (Iranian intelligence) involvement in and support for the jihad in Kashmir, greatly assisting the ISI”.

Thus the setback, Yadav says, Ansari caused to R&AW operations in Tehran, provided Iran-ISI axis an advantage to strengthen jihad in Kashmir.

Before going into the issue of PFI and the possible Iranian connection, it is essential to understand the role of Iran in Indian jihad. Essentially it is threefold.

1. It helps to ensure the security of the lives of sizable Shia minorities in Pakistan – largely an Islamist state with Sunni allegiance. Though the common enemy of the West may infuse inspiration of the jihadist cadre, with Pakistan’s proximity to the United States, Iran needs a more specific common enemy of Islam which is inevitably provided by the ‘infidel’ India. By providing base and logistic support to ISI operation in India, Iran develops close relations on theo-political grounds with Pakistan, which ensures that the Shias in Pakistan are largely free of severe persecution as against the Ahmadiyas.

2. In nuclear technology transfer, India has consistently refused assistance to Iran. Even while Iran was providing base for Kashmir jihad by ISI on its own soil, it approached India at the same time, in early 1990s, for the acquisition of a heavy water research reactor. The negotiations failed not only because of the US opposition but also because of “India's own doubts about selling the reactor to a country that was also cooperating with Pakistan in the atomic field”. Iran was simultaneously obtaining assistance and cooperation from Pakistan's notorious A Q Khan, a support that had a smooth run from 1987 to 1999.

It was the anti-Shia actions of Taliban in Afghanistan that would end the decade-long nuclear honeymoon between Pakistan and Iran. Now with Taliban, the source of sourness between Iran and Pakistan gone, there is every possibility that an Iran-Pakistan axis may develop again. In 2005, when India voted against Iran's nuclear programme in the International Atomic Energy Agency, Ansari did not hesitate to criticise India's stand. He said that the government of India had acted on 'its own judgement' (an euphemism for prejudice) and the stand was not borne out by facts.

A section of India’s foreign policy experts do believe that Iran is more concerned about the Shia-Sunni divide and hence will not be antagonistic to India, which has a vast population of Shia Muslims. India's veteran foreign analyst K Subrahmanyan reflects this thought process when he considers Iranian nuclear ambitions as being directed "more to counter a two-front encirclement of Shias by Sunni Pakistan and Sunni Saudi Arabia”.

However, such a thinking underestimates the power of the lure of an Islamic revolution getting established in an infidel secular state even if the eventual dominance is that of the Sunnis. That alone can explain why during Pokhran-II, Iran criticised India while it welcomed Pakistan’s nuclear tests. Iranian foreign minister Kamal Kharrazi became the first foreign dignitary to visit Islamabad after the 1998 nuclear explosions and made the statement that Muslims now felt “confident because a fellow Islamic nation possesses the knowhow to build nuclear weapons”. At the same time, Iran's UN Envoy Ali Khorram condemned India’s tests in Geneva saying that they "disrupted the strategic balance in the subcontinent”.

It is in this connection that one should see PFI also coordinates and supports anti-nuclear activists in India. Dr S Udhayakumar, a radical Luddite and anti-nuclear activist, was a star speaker at the recent conference organised by Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), the political wing of PFI.

3. Iran aims to evolve as a counter to Saudi Arabia – into a more ecumenical fundamentalist pan-Islamic state with a Shia-Sunni cooperation with a common minimum Islamist programme. Towards this end, it wants to build a strong cadre-based mass movement across India which has a sizable non-radicalised Shia population and pockets of radicalised Sunni population. Already a base for such a vision has been provided by the Sunni fundamentalist transnational JeI. As early as 1985, Iran showed eagerness to embrace the JeI ideology, ignoring the Shia-Sunni differences.

Ayatollah Ibrahim Amini, vice chairman of the Council of Experts of Iran, expressed the happiness of his government "with the efforts being made in Pakistan to establish an Islamic system”. He was referring to the Islamic radicalisation drive in Pakistan by JeI (Pakistan), under the patronage of general Zia-ul-Huq. Both Iran and ISI want to make use of this network: former for the establishment of a caliphate alternative to Saudi, and the latter for the destabilisation of India. While JeI itself has the aim of the creation of an Islamic caliphate of its own version.

It is with respect to the third factor that PFI (Popular Front of India) becomes important. It combines both the vision, support, institutional strategies that Iran has obtained through the decades with the vast network that JeI-Hind in India has created.

The choice of the name is important. From PAIC and PIO, which were part of the grand jihad movement of pre-9/11, to even older Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), PFI remarkably combines the versatile elements in all these movements. PFLP is a Marxist organisation, outwardly secular. It was formed in 1967 by Dr George Habash. What Harold M Cuibert said in his authoritative work on PFLP is very relevant to the present context:

The PFLP does not confine its organizational activity to the Middle East. ... It seeks to accomplish this task by concluding international alliances with left-wing and other movements and organizations and by directing the efforts of its constituents residing abroad. The PFLP sees itself as a living organism whose goal is to reverse the establishment of the state of Israel and to acquire for the Palestinians the rights which it feels they have always deserved. Each of the PFLP’s components is essential to its existence and each is given equal importance.

Harold M Cubert, The PFLP’s Changing Role inthe Middle East, Routledge, 2014
A year later, Ahmed Jibril split the organisation and created a more radical PFLP-General Command (PFLP-GC). Soon the Marxist leftist elements and Islamist radicals would blend together. In 1969, there was another split. The Popular Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine was formed by Naif Hawatmeh. All these organisations indulged in terrorism, upheld radical Islamism and also fundamentalist Islam. They at the same time used secular leftist-Marxist narrative to position them.

"There is an abundance of connections between Marxist groups and Islamist sphere,” points out Indian Muslim scholar Dr M H Syed in his two-volume sympathetic treatment of Islamism. He gives the example of PFLP-GC, which is outwardly Marxist having close collaborative ties with explicitly Islamist Hizbollah. “Without doubt the Shiites have provided the best bridge between the two Third World movements.” he says and credits the impact of 'Islamic revolution in Iran' for bringing together 'third world' Marxism and Arab Islamism.

The Islamist-Marxist correspondence is however inbuilt in the Islamist theology itself. It can be seen clearly in the writings of JeI founder – Syed Abul A'la Maududi (1903-1979). He was the one who dreamt of a world Islamic revolution. Jason Burke, the South Asian correspondent for The Guardian, brings out the similarity between Marxism and Maududian Islamism.

Maududi found useful material in Islamic history to dress what are basically Leninist tactics in more locally acceptable clothes. ... Maududi also used, for the first time the term jahillyya in a modern context. Previously it had been used to describe the state of anarchy, barbarism and lawlessness that the pre-Islamic tribes of Arabia had lived in. Now Maududi used it to describe ‘modern society’. This proximity in conception of radical left-wing thought is key, showing roots of both ideologies in attempts to address genuine social, economic, cultural and political problems.

Al-Qaeda: The True Story of Radical Islam, I B Tauris, 2004

Students Islamic Organisation (SIO) is the student wing of JeI-Hind. Campus Front is the student wing of PFI. In many universities like Hyderabad, the left-wing student unions form alliances with SIO. The poster shows how Islamic theology and radicalisation happen in the campus. One can note that already in India the Nehruvian and Marxist historians have created a similar narrative. Anti-Hindu campaigns of Aurangazeb to Moplah carnage to Mumbai bombing to ethnic cleansing of Hindus in Kashmir by jihadists were all given economic and secular reasons by the Marxist-Nehruvian historians. In most of these incidents of inhuman anti-Hindu violence, Muslims were shown as representing progressive and liberating forces and Hindus were shown as feudal, socially stagnant, bourgeois and oppressors.

With such a fertile ground for pro-Islamist narrative already in place in India, Islamists perfected both the left-Islamist affinity and the experiences of post-1970 global pan-Islamic movement in their current operations in India. They simultaneously have built a strong radical left-Islamist narrative for the democratic set-up. They are also building a cadre movement that can only be defined as Islamo-fascist, which has contacts across borders. While technically they are an Indian movement they are a continued legacy of Turabi, Zia and Khomeini. Their organisational outreach is the product of other ‘popular’ movements of pan-Islamic organism. They synergistically bring together their work in democratic realm to destroy the very same democracy and usher in a theo-totalitarian regime.

From left, flags of PFI, JKLF (Kashmir) and the Palestine movement. From left, flags of PFI, JKLF (Kashmir) and the Palestine movement.

An instance of how this is done is shown in the aftermath of 2008 Mumbai carnage.

Soon after 26/11 Mumbai attacks, Iranian daily Kayhan, the mouthpiece of Iranian government alleged that it was an Indo-Zionist conspiracy against Pakistan while Iranian President Ahmadinejad also implied that the attacks had nothing to do with Pakistan. In India, a similar stand was taken and a propaganda blitzkrieg was done by radical leftists and PFI.

In March 2010, The Milli Gazette, which prides itself as 'Indian Muslims’ leading English newspaper published a long conspiracy theory by Amaresh Misra which alleged that ‘Mumbai attack was a joint IB-CIA-Mossad-RSS project'. In the article, Misra warned that as IB is obstructing the work of ‘secular Indians’ like Digvijay Singh and that "all its communal officers will be hunted down and tried in a court of just law”. Interestingly, the man got his book on 1857 released by none other than Ansari, then vice-president of India.

Incidentally, PFI on similar lines questioned the hanging of Ajmal Kasab. Criticising "the unusual hastiness shown by the ruling machinery in hanging Kasab”, the editorial of PFI daily Thejas claimed that "Kasab had no role in the Mumbai terror attack and after being handed over to the Indian intelligence agencies in Nepal, he was put into the case”.

There are also seemingly secular human right organisations, which actually lobby for the PFI who are caught in terror-related cases. NCHRO – National Confederation of Human Rights Organisations (NCHRO) – provides a case study on how Islamists use human rights organisations. While the president and vice-president are radical left non-Muslims, the executive council has as its members well known PFI high officials like Ahmed Shareef, the PFI's founder member, K H Nasar the executive editor of PFI Malayalam daily Thejas and was the vice-president of PFI state committee and so on. This ‘human rights organisation’ has a nationwide presence. In 2007, NCHRO in association with Amnesty International India, convened a national seminar on fake ‘encounter killings’ and now one decade later the participants in its seminar include Prof Nivedita Menon and Umar Khalid of Jawaharlal Nehru University.

A typical media ploy: NCHRO is presented as a secular human rights body giving clean chit to PFI while hiding NCHRO’s connection with PFI.A typical media ploy: NCHRO is presented as a secular human rights body giving clean chit to PFI while hiding NCHRO’s connection with PFI.

In 2013, Kerala police raided a training centre run by the PFI at Narath, Kerala. The police discovered bombs, human effigy for target practice and material for bomb making. They also seized 21 mobile phones kept in a two-wheeler and also more importantly an Iranian entry card in the name of Sadik to Kish Island free zone and foreign currency. Soon NCHRO launched a campaign to free the arrested in Narath case. While the press reports simply stated that NCHRO was a human rights organisation, the real nature of the secular-sounding group was never brought out by the mainstream media.

However, 2013 was not the first time the Iranian connection has surfaced in Kerala.

On 2 May 2003, eight Hindu fishermen, unarmed and enjoying an evening breeze at the Marad beach of Kozhikode district in Kerala were massacred. Thomas P Joseph Commission appointed by the Kerala government tabled its report in 2006. The report while pointing out foreign links of jihadist organisations in Kerala said that "Iran and the ISI of Pakistan were the money sponsoring agencies of the NDF”. NDF or the National Development Front was the precursor to PFI.

Image

M K Stalin the heir of DMK supremo Karunanidhi on the SDPI platform. SDPI is the political arm of PFI. M K Stalin the heir of DMK supremo Karunanidhi on the SDPI platform. SDPI is the political arm of PFI.

Thus the Iranian connection in the PFI, which surfaces from time to time and the invitation of Ansari, who too is an ‘old Iran hand’ with pro-Iranian leanings and who occupied one of the top-most constitutional positions in India, to PFI conference may not be a coincidence at all. Far from that it may be an indicator as to the coming of age of Islamist politics in India which uses terror and democratic means strategically in a tactful mix to wage jihad in India.

When Ansari participated in the PFI conference, that sends a signal that PFI and its affiliates are soon going to expand into the Shia population as well, which has so far largely remained non-radicalised. This will have greater ramifications for India in terms of its relations with Iran. Further, with professional inputs from such veterans like Ansari, who know the system so well, PFI will be now better equipped to use Indian state and democracy to subvert the same.

Maritime security: Isro to help track suspicious vessels through satellite imageries - Bharti Jain, ToI
Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) will soon help agencies engaged in coastal and maritime security to track suspicious vessels and boats through satellite imagery. The initiative, under which Isro will supply 1,000 transponders by March next year for satellite monitoring of boats, is aimed at preventing a 26/11 attack-type infiltration from the sea route.

While automatic identification system will monitor boats measuring above 20 metres, satellite monitoring is proposed for the sub-20m boats,
a home ministry official said on Friday.

The infrastructure for tighter monitoring of suspicious vessels approaching the Indian coast is coming up fast, with 46 coastal radars and 74 automatic ID systems installed. Colour coding of boats is also being undertaken by the coastal states and UTs for easier monitoring in the high seas and on the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).

The aforesaid measures are part of home ministry's efforts to beef up coastal security in wake of the breach that triggered the Mumbai attacks in 2008. Ten Pakistani terrorists had sailed all the way from Karachi coast to Mumbai, starting in a Pakistani vessel and then shifting to an Indian fishing boat they had hijacked mid-sea, before landing undetected on the Mumbai coast in a rubber dinghy. They unleashed mayhem at the city's iconic buildings including Taj Hotel, thereafter, killing 166 people.

Meanwhile, a home ministry official on Friday said biometric cards have been issued to most fishermen. Of the 19.9 lakh target beneficiaries, 19.7 lakh have enrolled and cards issued to 18.6 lakh of them. Standard operating procedures have been drawn up for dealing with breach of IMBL, better coordination among all stakeholders and upgrading security in non-major ports.

India has a long coastline of 7,516 km running through Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal and the Union Territories of Daman and Diu, Lakshadweep, Puducherry and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. With many vital installations such as nuclear plants, sea ports, naval stations, satellite/missile launching centres and oil installations located on the coastline, prime importance is accorded to coastal and maritime security.

While Phase 1 of the Integrated Coastal Security Scheme was implemented at a cost of Rs 646 crore between 2005 and 2011, Phase 2 involving a Rs 1,580-crore outlay is nearing completion.

Dawood's son a maulana

This looks like some sort of a scam by Dawood to legitimize his son -- hopefully, any property inherited by this "maulana" son of Dawood will be attached as proceeds of a criminal enterprise, just like the rest of dawood's properties. Guy has apparently memorized the Quran, so the correct term for that is "hafiz" not maulana.

SC has passed interim order to Kerala LJ cases. Hadiya case clubbed with other LJ cases was being heard. Hadiya/Akhila has been sent to Salem to finish her studies under Dean as guardian. SC has refused to stay annulment of her marriage by HC. Next hearing in Jan. Secular channel are spinning it as victory for Hadiya. This is test case for LJ in India. If the judgement passes in favour of PFI it will make LJ easier as parents won't be able to approach court. OTOH, if judgement is against PFI it will open up all LJ cases for legal challenge. The seculars are backing PFI as their legal counsel are Kapil Sibal and Indira Jaisingh.

I am all against LJ, but if a girl is not a minor, what legal course does/should the parents have if they suspect LJ ? It is a losing battle. Better to approach this from the perspective of enlightening parents to ensure they provide the right religious values to their kids and warn them about the dangers with getting into a relationship with a person following the desert warlord ideology.

In a way, the Hadiya case has done a lot to make this issue mainstream such that parents and girls are aware of this issue. This is a huge positive as a result of this.

This was exactly the scenario faced by Hindu and Punjabi - Sikh girls in UK almost two decades back. Back then when RSS used to form swayamsevak Sangh and asked parents to send their children for 2 hours on Sunday i.e 1 hour of physical exercise and an hour of cultural training most of these neo liberals snubbed the invitation branding these volunteer as jingo and backward thinking individuals. When girls started returning Homes of their parents after their LJ husband has moved on to khatun no 2 ..chicken came to roost and these very parents who snobbed volunteers ran to them to help in name of community cohesion. These volunteers guys stupid as they are branded still helped parents to get children's in line with Indian culture and asked these parents to do word of mouth to send under 10 to cultural and physical training program every Sunday..it is now mainstream for Hindu and Sikh girls and boys being highly aware about LJ angle and avoid ask situation for family and community. Have said that not all cases are LJ and there are good guys out there who really allow their spouses to still follow the parents religion either way.

In Hadiya's case, which is technically not LJ, PFI, SDPI and other assorted bunch of Islamists tried to be tactically brilliant and goofed up big time. That is why this case reached SC. Hadiya has every right to convert to the religion of her choice and choose any one as her husband. The Hon. High Court of Kerala would have allowed her to walk away with her husband months back if this blunder was not committed. The high court hearing the case against Hadiya's conversion had sent her in the custody of a lady associated with PFI while the court was taking its time to decide the outcome. To strengthen their case for conversion PFI decided to get her married to a total stranger, that too with possible IS connection without informing the court or the girl's parents. The high court threw the kitchen sink at PFI when it came to know of this deception and annulled the marriage.

Now even if finally SC decides to allow Hadiya to go with her husband, the NIA investigation would have dug up enough dirt to have the husband sent to jail and possibly get PFI banned.

Interesting. Thanks for enlightenment. I am still perplexed why would a mature girl agree to this kind of blackmail and go against parents who protected her off first 20 years. But then hormones works mysteriously so can never know..

There is no love angle here. The girl was brought up in a communist environment at home where she was deracinated from Hinduism. She is not a very bright person also. She passed her 12th in the second attempt and has failed the first semester of her Homoeopathy course. She was attracted by the 'deen' and spiritual ways of some of her college mates and the spiritual vaccum in her life was filled by Islamists waiting for a prey. Instead of concentrating on her medical course she traveled to a religious conversion centre and changed herself into Hadiya. Her father approached the court. The husband/lover/marriage issue came along only later, suddenly, during the court drama. Some of her actions are inexplicable and no rational person will do such things.

Parents who think religious traditions are nonsense and Kids with low self-esteem will lead to such cases. The father deserves this more than Hadiya. She is a loose screw case who probably shouldn't breed.

When I was being taken to Mumbai from Kolkata, I realised the cops were complicit. I managed to escape from the train at Chattisgarh.
WB police is complicit in allowing free run of these terrorists -- which means the political leadership is also complicit. Not surprising behavior for Mamata Banerjee.

Thowheed Jamaat molests women in public and then protests when their member is arrested for it

BJP supporter are being openly threatened with rape by these islamist scumbags in Thowheed Jamaat. Shameless aholes protest when their members are arrested for such behavior. Is TN turning into another Kerala, where they are attacking social workers/nurses for vaccinating kids. Now these scumbags are attacking political party workers for doing their job.
However, police said the trouble began when Sharon Rose, a Dalit Christian and an executive committee member of the BJP, lodged a complaint at Egmore Police Station last Monday stating that she, along with the party members, verified voters’ list and organised enrolment campaign at Shiyali street, Pudupet.
As if it is illegal to do door-to-door visits if you are affiliated with the BJP -- do these scumbags think they are living in some islamic kingdom already?
TNTJ State secretary M.S. Syed Ibrahim said under the pretext of verifying Aadhaar card details, functionaries of the BJP, including a few women, posed as representatives of the government and went on a door-to-door visit in Pudupet.

ISI, Khalistani group plotted killings of RSS men in Punjab - Neeraj Chauhan, ToI
An NIA probe into a series of targeted killings, including those of RSS workers, Dera Sacha Sauda followers and a pastor in Punjab in the last two years has revealed that Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) is using Khalistani extremists to try and stoke communal unrest in the state.

The plan was to foment tension by killing key people and revive militancy. ISI turned to Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) led by Harminder Singh Mintoo, lodged in Moga jail, and Harmeet Singh, said to be living in Pakistan under ISI cover.

Details of the conspiracy were revealed during questioning of two hitmen — Ramandeep Singh and Hardeep Singh
— by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in the case relating to the murder of Ravinder Gosain, an RSS pracharak, in Ludhiana in October 2017. The duo allegedly admitted to killing six other men — RSS state vice-president Jagdish Gagneja in August 2016, Shiv Sena leader Durga Prasad Gupta in April 2016, Hindu Takht leader Amit Sharma in January, Dera Sacha Sauda follower Satpal Singh and his son in February and Christian pastor Sultan Masih in July. They also attempted to kill a few others.

Sources said other cases would soon be probed by the NIA and added that Ramandeep and Hardeep were recruited as contract killers online sometime in 2015. They were asked them to carry out executions in Punjab. The KLF used its network in the UK to reach the two men. {UK, with its policy of protecting violent elements under a misguided policy, has become a big threat for India}

On a positive response from these two, ISI and KLF allegedly transferred Rs 40 lakh to them in India through hawala, Western Union and individual bank accounts from the UK, Italy, France, the UAE and Pakistan.

Ramandeep allegedly travelled to the UAE in March 2015 for basic training from the ISI and KLF and to understand the broad plan.{And, UAE is the meeting point for various Pakistani terror groups, warlords and mafia. But, at least they have started cooperating now and then unlike the UK}

Dilbu...thats a very wrong analysis of Hadiya case. Ahkila has fallen prey to a well oiled program of conversion with a familiar modus operandi . A muslim lady befriends some hindu girl... slow exposure to islam ...then introduction to a muslim boy...promise of love and sweet words...more exposure of islam / marriage ... any girl can fall for such a well oiled drill. HIndus are paying with their liberal attitude towards religion /education. Kerala may be communist but the mallus take their religion pretty seriously. Muslims hide their girls inside their homes ( no use of education after 13 years) ..quickly get them married to muslim boys..and start reproducing like pigs. going to kendriya vidyalayas as son of a IAF officer in the 1970's...we had a very attractive girl as classmate ( who was herself a IAF officers daughter). We went to all other girls homes in the camp and their parents never objected. But we could never meet this muslim girl muslim in her house !!! she never came to the mess for swimming or games!! this at the ripe old age of 14 or 15 years. After class 9th she never showed up in school and we learnt that she has been married off !! the islamists are taking advantage of hindus liberal attitude towards religion/education/marriage. How many muslim girls have married HIndu boys in Kerala?? and survived to tell the tale...

he has purposely tried to hobble the UCC right from the start by giving such a poisonous "opinion".

It has been deliberately done to stoke communal fires, to make it controversial and therefore a political timebomb. A "judge" has no bleddy business stating a personal political opinion.

why was the matter referred to such a man in the first place?? He has a specific ideology and agenda in mind.

Do we have religion wise fertility rate data for Kerala? Would be very interesting. I think while Hindu women are mostly having 1 kid, Muslims seem to be having 3-4 at the very least. But the TFR for Kerala is near replacement, so it is Muslims taking their numbers up while Hindus/Xtians seem to be going down steadily. Dark days ahead for God's own country.

For all his alleged smarts, Modi seems to have trusted a bureaucracy a little too much for his own good. They are all busy burying knives on the back of his political legacy, compromised as they all are politically. Who else would have suggested this oiseaule for drafting a document as important as the UCC? These guys in the judiciary and bureaucracy want to prompt a war between the majority and minority at the first opportunity.

Power lines may help quell a 70-year-old conflict in Kashmir.

In Prime Minister Narendra Modi's push to supply electricity to every Indian household, connecting homes in the state of Jammu & Kashmir might be the toughest.

Along India's violence-prone northern border, engineers and construction workers are hauling tons of high-tension wires and steel frames on pack mules across barren deserts and mountain ravines to electrify one of the country's most inhospitable states. Still, the effort, budgeted to cost Rs 4,800 crore ($740 million), may turn out to be Modi's most rewarding.

In some villages, winter outages persist for 20 hours a day even as temperatures dip to minus 35 degrees Celsius (minus 31 degrees Fahrenheit). Modi is counting on 24x7 power to both warm homes and hearts in the Muslim-majority state, where as many as 70,000 terrorists, security forces and civilians have died in independence-fueled clashes in the past three decades. Construction of key infrastructure in the Kashmir Valley may be helping.

People understand the value of this project since very few large development projects are happening in the valley," said Pratik Agarwal, chief executive officer of Sterlite Power Transmission Ltd., which is building the state's first private transmission line. "We have been getting incredible support as power is something people can relate to -- it's something that everyone wants."

When the first equipment reached a spot about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Srinagar, one of the state's two capital cities, in May 2016, locals protested what they thought was the makings of an army camp. As an electrical substation emerged, opposition gave way. Now, two neighboring villages are squabbling over rights to get their name on it.

The enthusiasm reflects an eagerness for electricity in a state lacking a fifth of the peak energy it needs. It also points to infrastructure as a potential avenue for Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party to garner greater support from Muslim Kashmiris, some of whom have violently opposed the controlling force of New Delhi, 825 kilometers south of Srinagar.

Electricity shortages have long been a bane in the Kashmir Valley, and providing reliable, affordable, constant power could go some way in quelling unrest, according to Noor Ahmad Baba, dean of the school of social sciences at the Central University of Kashmir.

Baba traces a connection between lack of electricity and militancy, drawing from his observations as a youth in the late 1980s, when insurgency escalated in Kashmir.

"Poor electricity supplies not only deprive Kashmiris of education, employment and medical facilities, but also very basic things like entertainment and communication," he said over the phone from Srinagar. "This leads to a lot of discontent."

While the state's capitals, Srinagar and Jammu, have electricity most of the day, towns and villages like Haft Chinar, on the outskirts of Srinagar, don't. "We barely get power now -- three-to-four hours a day at best," said Tanveer Hussain ..

who helps guard a newly built substation that he sees improving lives. "This has helped a lot of us. We got jobs and hope to get power, too, so my children can study and have a better life."

The lack of power is an economic drain on the state, according to Fayaz Ahmad Punjabi, junior vice president of the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry. "Electricity is like food for industry, it's a necessity," he said. "But in Kashmir today, it's a luxury. So industry suffers, people suffer. Power is life, and we don't have enough of it."

Modi pledged to bring power to 18,452 unelectrified villages within 1,000 days in his August 2015 Independence Day national address. As of Oct. 31, electricity had reached 15,218 or 82 percent of those villages. In Jammu and Kashmir, 100 out of 134 villages, encompassing 270,000 households, lacking electricity were still waiting to be connected.

The government is trying to speed up progress with two transmission-line projects.

The Sterlite project will bring power from Jalandhar, in northern Punjab state, to Amargarh, near Srinagar, along a 441-kilometer line running parallel to the so-called Line of Control that marks part of India's de facto northern border with Pakistan.

The project, which will cost more than Rs 2,600 crore, is almost finished and Sterlite aims to start supplying as much as 1,000 megawatts to the power-starved valley in late December, several months ahead of schedule.

A dearth of suitable roads in some remote areas meant dozens of mules were used to haul construction material and Sterlite hired an air crane from Erickson Inc. to lift pieces for transmission towers to peaks as high as 3.8 kilometer (12,500 feet) in the Pir Panjal Range.

"We got incredible support from the state government," said Agarwal, Sterlite's CEO. "We've been working relentlessly despite the curfews, despite the unrest in Kashmir."

A second project managed by state-owned Power Grid Corp. will run electricity 350 kilometers from Srinagar to the Ladakh region in the state's northeast, bordering China.

"Kashmir and Ladakh freeze in winter," said Nirmal Kumar Singh, Jammu & Kashmir's deputy chief minister, in an interview. "Transmission is a big hurdle."

The state's peak power demand is about 2,700 megawatts, though it gets merely 2,100 megawatts -- about 1,100 megawatts from hydro electricity produced within the state and the rest from other states through an existing Power Grid transmission line. A lack of transmission capacity prevents it bringing in more.

Ladakh, a desert region with about 300,000 people between the Himalayan and Karakoram mountains, gets only about 25 megawatts of hydroelectricity in summer. In winter, it plunges into darkness, save a couple of hours each day when army-supplied, diesel-powered generators run.

Power Grid's line will cost Rs 2,200 crore and carry as much as 150 megawatts of electricity over mountains 4.6 kilometers above sea level when it's completed in 2018.

"Our line passes through Drass, one of the coldest and highest inhabited places," said Anil Jain, an executive director with Power Grid, who anticipates electricity demand in Ladakh will boom once homes and businesses are connected to the grid.

Providing power shows that the government in New Delhi is eager to develop the state and support the local economy, but more work is needed to resolve long-standing grievances, including a resumption of talks between India and Pakistan to to settle a territorial dispute over Kashmir, said Zahid Shahab Ahmed, a research fellow at Deakin University in Melbourne, who focuses on peace and security in the Muslim world.

"Deep wounds cannot just be healed by the constant supply of electricity," Ahmed said. "The people of Jammu & Kashmir need other freedoms, including security of their lives."

The power projects may be helping on that front, too, by forging a more conciliatory and collaborative approach.

After Sterlite faced initial resistance from locals, it suspected that state-sponsored protection could make it more vulnerable to attack and found it could better manage security using a private company staffed by mostly locals.

Linking the remote Himalayan region to the national power grid symbolizes a commitment to strengthen ties with the country's farthest state, said Baba at the Central University of Kashmir.

"The central government's push to increase power supplies is an important indicator that it's serious about bringing the state back into the national mainstream," he said.

Mumbai duo held in first case of Osmium smuggling.

In the first case of its kind in the country, two men from Jogeshwari have been held for trying to smuggle osmium metal dust into the country. What has set alarm bells ringing is the fact that osmium has limited nuclear weapons applicability, which means that it can be used to make nuclear weapons more powerful . Osmium dust sells for Rs 14 lakh per kilo in the international market.

Huzefa Motorwala and Feroze Penwala were caught by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials on Thursday.

The duo were found with two kilos of powdery dust of the bluish grey metal along with 4.5 kg gold outside a courier company office. The two are suspected to be part of an international cartel. Top DRI officials told Mirror that this is the first osmium smuggling case recorded in India. Probe is on to determine the final destination of the smuggled material.

Osmium, the densest naturally occurring element, has anti-corrosive properties and is resistant to acid. According to the US based Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), an organisation working to secure the world against nuclear, radiological and chemical dangers, Osmium is dense and so it can be used to 'stabilise' nuclear explosive material to stay compact for a relatively long period of time, thus increasing the explosive yield.

Russian security agency FSB had red-flagged osmium smuggling sometime back with potential 'production of nuclear weapons connotations' after it was discovered that Chechen terrorists were smuggling osmium into Russia from neighbouring Kazakhstan. There have also been reports of consignments of osmium being sold in Iraq and a few other middle-eastern countries after being sourced from Azerbaijan.

According to DRI officials, the osmium dust seized from the Jogeshwari duo was packed together with gold biscuits inside steel canisters. The DRI has also detained a delivery boy working for a global courier company in connection with the incident.

"The money made through the sale of osmium may have been remitted out through hawala channels. We have reasons to believe that the osmium smuggling funds may have been parked at a few globally known tax havens," said a senior DRI official requesting anonymity.

The sprawling international cartel, controlled from Hong Kong by a Pakistani, has been successful in routing osmium dust through the two accused in Mumbai on at least 10 occasions before, say DRI sources.

They were arrested under Sections 104 and 135 of the Customs Act for smuggling, misdeclaration of values and evasion of duties, said a top DRI official. Primary interrogation of the duo has revealed that Motorwala runs a second-hand car business in the western suburbs while Penwala runs a watches store in Jogeshwari.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Interpol is known to often devise strategies to curb illicit trafficking and smuggling of strategic material which means radioactive and nuclear substances. "However, osmium by itself is not radioactive. If you talk of its application in nuclear weapons, it is not direct but only by way of being a catalytic agent when a new technological acquisition happens," said a nuclear physicist with the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics (SINP).

Congress party claims bluetooth "hacked" EVMs

These EVMs used in India do not have bluetooth controllers or software -- there has to be a penalty for this kind of rumour mongering by the traitors in the congress party. It does not do anyone in India any good to delegitimize EVMs for political purposes -- last thing we want is move back to ballot boxes that the likes of lalu yadav could manipulate to win elections.

This is why a 3 child ban MUST come within the next 5 years. If this decade is lost, then the chances of having enough seats in the parliament itself will be a challenge. Even if the Muslim population doesn't increase to 40-45% in India, they will still reach upwards of 30% by all conservative estimates. That alone will bring earth shattering changes in Indian polity, society & culture. We must do whatever we can to keep this cancer under 20% by all means possible.

That is the gist of this case under SC's consideration.

It seems the Delhi Policy Group which was behind the clandestine meeting at Aiyar's house is foreign funded. Countries like USA, Russia, Australia, etc have a rule that all ngos, entities engaging in domestic policy, public policy, politics and geo-poitics but funded from outside be registered as "foreign agent". It is time India brings in this rule in order to regulate these ngos and groups better.

wrt to love jihad and many others,it is aproblem with many well meaning people of all faiths esp Hindus.

many muslims and christians who are good decent humans irrespective of faith fall to their institutions in crisis.

This sort of institutional support guidleiens is non existent in Hinduism.
easy to get brainwashed.

If anyone says " every religion is same and love has no religion" almost always it is Hindus.

Please see the entire video. people can also tweet and make articles on this.
beautifully put for the otherside view of the whole marriage scenario.
Hindus are absolutely clueless.
No wonder majority end up converting due to various reasons.

_____-----------------

Huge fault on Hindu institutions not making it robust for Hindu persons marrying outside the faiths with no poison pills embedded.

Christians jews and muslims have strong poison pills to make it incumbent on other spouse to convert with institutional support.

Author of the interfaith marriages book is a Indian living in west coast- a cancer doctor and researcher. He spent 10 years studying the interfaith marriages. also has his website documenting over 1000 marriages and their stories.

Probabaly first serious attempt to study these interfaith marriage from Hindu perspective and offer some solutions.

RBI ‘chokes’ money supply to J&K
Economy likely to be severely affected; RBI spokesperson says notification not in public domain

Saqib Malik
Srinagar, Publish Date: Dec 12 2017

RBI ‘chokes’ money supply to J&K

Banking regulator Reserve Bank of India has begun restricting the flow of fresh currency notes to banks operating in Jammu and Kashmir which is likely to hit the state’s economy severely, a top banking functionary said on Tuesday.

The functionary, who insisted not to be named because he wasn’t authorised to speak to media, said that automated teller machine (ATM) transactions are the worst-hit because the RBI has reduced the number of high denomination Rs 500 and Rs 2000 notes to banks operating in “border states such as J&K.”

“J&K has a cash requirement of Rs 700 crore but we receive only Rs 200 crore at the moment. The problem has been prevalent for the past one month and is proving to be severe now. During ATM transactions, customers are able to withdraw only low denomination notes. We receive several customer complaints in this regard,” the banking functionary, who was seconded by his colleague, said. In absence of high denomination currency notes, the cash in ATMs is getting exhausted soon despite regular refilling.

“This is essentially due to presence of low denomination currency notes. We have written to the RBI about this sudden reduction of cash flow because of which the end customer is getting badly affected. The RBI is just going back and forth on the issue and not giving any concrete response,” the functionary said, adding that despite a major drop in cash flow, “we are ensuring that ATMs with exhausted cash are refilled on a regular basis but we are helpless beyond a point.”

There are a total of 1050 ATM kiosks of the J&K bank in the state while rest of the banks have 1382 ATMs.

An official said that mostly low denomination currency notes such as Rs 100 are available with banks, leading to ATMs “running dry” every now and then.

“The capacity to load cash in ATMs has also reduced due to presence of low denomination currency notes. With an adequate flow of cash, an ATM can accommodate Rs 30 lakh to Rs 40 lakh cash at a time but with the cash cut, we are able to accommodate only Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7 lakh cash in an ATM,” the official said.

He said that due to shortage of cash in ATMs especially the high denomination currency notes, customers are forced to visit bank branches, thus increasing the rush there.
“It is ironical that on the one hand the RBI is promoting digital banking and ATM usage, but on the other, it is clipping our wings by restricting the cash flow. If this policy decision is not revoked, we will be economically crippled soon as it has already started affecting the people’s daily lives,” the banking official said.

When contacted, RBI spokesperson Alpana Killawala claimed that there was no official notification with regard to “restriction of cash flow”.

“This is not in the public domain and there is no official notification as of now. I will need to check and get back to you on this,” Killawala said.

Countries like USA, Russia, Australia, etc have a rule that all ngos, entities engaging in domestic policy, public policy, politics and geo-poitics but funded from outside be registered as "foreign agent". It is time India brings in this rule in order to regulate these ngos and groups better.
