Prahaar ji, I know, I was pointing to govt's (in)action. If you look at some senior BJP minister's tweets yesterday (ex RSP), you'd feeling like banging your head. I hope the action will be visible and set as an example. That's very important in trying to prevent such incidents in the future.

Rajiv Rai Bhatnagar appointed new CRPF chief after Sukma attack - TNIE
NEW DELHI: Senior IPS officer Rajiv Rai Bhatnagar was today appointed as the Director General of the CRPF, two days after 25 personnel of the force were massacred by Naxals in Chhattisgarh.

The paramilitary force was headless for nearly two months after the retirement of K Durga Prasad on February 28. Bhatnagar, a 1983 batch IPS officer, will be the new DG of the CRPF, official sources said.

Senior IPS officer R K Pachnanda was also appointed as the DG of Indo Tibetan Border Police force. Pachnanda is a 1983 batch IPS officer of West Bengal cadre.
Need a person like K.S. Vyas to take charge. This has gone on long enough.

From today's paper:

One retired military man's son now a martyr, ready to send another to Army - By Kaushik Kannan & G Rajasekaran, TNIE
MADURAI/SALEM: He lost a son in the Maoist encounter in Sukuma, Chhattisgarh on Monday, yet is proud that the martyr’s brother is all set to join the army. Meet retired armyman Pitchaialagu, whose 28-year-old son P Alagupandi’s mortal remains arrived on Monday evening at his Muthunagaiyahpuram village in Madurai district.

“We were looking to get Alagupandi married and even visited a prospective bride. A few days ago, he called to say he asked for a week’s leave so he could meet the girl... We were hoping to get them married,” the father recounts.
Alagupandi and Pitchaialagu | Express

A constable with the CRPF, Alagupandi was cut down by a hail of bullets from Maoists during the ambush. Of the 25 CRPF jawans who died in the encounter, four were from Tamil Nadu.

Pitchaialagu doesn’t like dwelling on the loss of Alagupandi for long. Looking at the brighter side, he beams as he says his younger son Pavithran (23) has been selected to serve in the army. Pavithran is currently awaiting recruitment orders. Military life seems to flow in the family’s veins. For, Pitchaialagu got his daughters Sathya and Nithya married to an armyman and a police official, respectively.

“We heard that several CRPF personnel were killed in a Maoist attack and were flipping through TV channels to see if there was any news about our son. It was then that we heard the shocking news,” recalls the breaveheart dad.

The body of Alagupandi, who joined the CRPF in 2009, was brought to the Madurai Airport around 7 pm on Monday and Revenue Minister R B Udayakumar, Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan, district Collector K Veera Raghava Rao, Superintendent of Police Vijayendra S Bidari and CRPF officials paid homage before the body was sent to his native village.

In Salem, relatives of N Thirumurugan, another CRPF personnel who died in the encounter, recounted how they watched their son leave home to join the force. “We educated him with dreams that with him, the family’s problems would end. Our son cheered us up, saying he was going to serve the country and that should make us proud,” said Nallathambi, Thirumurugan’s father.

Sukma attack: CRPF jawans were having lunch when Maoists ambushed them - ToI
NEW DELHI: The 25 CRPF jawans who were killed+ in a deadly Naxalite ambush in Chhattisgarh+ 's Sukma, were having lunch when a hail of bullets and grenades hit them fatally.

A party of about 36 troops, out of the total 99, came under the first assault after they had ventured out from Burkapal on Monday to sanitise and provide protection to a 5.5-km long road construction work connecting Chitagufa in the said district, officials said.

The Maoists squad "very discreetly with the aid of locals" kept tracking the movement of the troops when one party of 36, out of the total three, sat down for lunch, the Maoists, possessing sophisticated weapons, took them by surprise and rained heavy gun fire, they said.

A huge assortment of 22 smart arms, including 13 AK series assault rifles and 5 INSAS rifles, 3,420 live rounds of various rifles, 75 magazines of AK rifles, 31 of INSAS, 67 live UBGL rounds, 22 bullet proof jackets, two binoculars, five wireless sets and a deep search metal detector were also looted by Naxalites, they said.

While a top CRPF officer said the killed troops had "finished their lunch" and may be were not in an absolute alert mode for the next few minutes, other officials said "some of them were having their lunch" when the attack was launched around 12.30pm.

While the slain 25 men and about six others who were injured, tried to gather their weapons or take aim at the marauding Naxalites, the others on the guard duty mounted an effective retaliation and saved about 40 civilians and construction workers who were present in the vicinity of the area during the deadly assault+ that lasted over an hour.

What has surprised multiple security officials whom PTI talked to, is the fact that the Maoists are understood to have used few under-barrel grenade launchers (UBGL), a smart and sophisticated weapon used by security forces, to inflict fatal casualties on the troops by lobbing grenades in quick succession.

"It is very likely that these UBGLs were looted from security forces only. That could be as recent as the incident where 12 CRPF men were killed in Sukma on March 11," a senior officer said.

He added that while no Improvised Explosive Device (IEDs) was used in the ambush, the favourite weapon for inflicting damage on security forces, what claimed the lives in the biggest Naxalite ambush of the country in the last three years was heavy usage of gun fire and grenades.

Officials said as the troops of the 74th battalion of the CRPF, that came under attack, and few other similar contingents have been going out on the same track for some time and hence there was a possibility that their "presence was being tracked, marked and trailed" by Maoist cadres.

"Our men have told us that the villagers were making movements close to them. Villagers were also taken as shields by Naxalites and that restricted our fire for some time," the officer said.

At present the troops were securing a culvert that is being constructed on the road and it would have taken about four-five months more to complete this task, the officer said.

Here's a great YouTube video showcasing the training regime for direct recruit CRPF officers of the Assistant Commandant rank. The diversity of the trainees is impressive as is their educational qualifications. Some happy news considering recent events.

The Sukma loss is quite grievous.
The CO Inspector, one SI, three ASIs, three HCs are killed.
Its like total loss of command of the company.

And the mutilations on the dead show a Paki mentality.

Need to neutralize that attack group ASAP.

I also want the practice of appointing IPS officers as DGP CRPF be stopped.
These IPS officers don't have enough time before retiring or the fancy word super-annuation.
I checked the CRPF Wikipedia page and very few DGP had more than two years of service at the top.

the newly appointed CRPF DG has a background in narcotics control. not exactly the hard line infantry background needed. a army general on deputation or recently retired from COIN ops is best.

in MH yesterday, a ploy to lure crpf using banners and then exploding a buried 4kg IED remotely trigged with a wire was foiled

CRPF is a police force (law and order duties) with its jawans holding baton in one hand and a gun in the other, with the gun being rarely used. It should not be used to battle guerrilla fighters in jungles.

We need a new force on the lines of Assam Rifles specially trained for jungle warfare (the Cobra battalions should be transferred to this new force), with officers drawn from the army, with its own intelligence wing. It should have the mandate to secure the jungles of Central India where Maoists are most active. CRPF needs to be withdrawn from such duties.

a portion of crpf need to be better train on lines of a army infantry school thats all. ..ie more conversion to cobra unit std.
they have plenty of weapons and bases now in the region.
let us not think of knee jerk solutions.
we need to stay the course and fight it out.
build more roads, criss cross the region with roads and restrict freedom of naxals to move around undetected...

Conflicted in general on how stone pelters should be dealt with in J&K. But am clear that those targeting Army DURING ops deserve headshots.

Difference between stone pelters & stone pelters who attack forces during anti-terror ops. No mercy for latter. Accessories to terrorists.

Reports of stone pelters targeting Army near attack site during combing ops. Direct support for terrorists, endangering ALL. Should be shot.

By the afternoon, locals gathered and held protests, throwing stones at securitymen as they demanded the bodies of the terrorists. To control the crowds, the army opened fire in which a 70-year-old man has died.

^^^ lenient approach has let these stone throwers imagine themselves as big herrows. shoot at sight must be issued if they obstruct govt. a couple months of curfew may be needed also to starve these sleek well fed jihadi hoodlums.

GD, CRPF is the premier central police force. Among its laurels is the 1965 Rann of Kutch where it bore the brunt of the Paki attack. The BSF was formed from its battalions.
Later in 2001 the Parliament Protection Force (some of them lady cops) killed the Paki terrorists that led to Operation Parakram.

It has jungle warfare units and training school.
Its in the process of re-equipping.

The new DGP was the one who annihilated Veerappan.
Lets see.
BTW, 74 Bn seems to be an all AK-47 unit.
The stolen INSAS would be LMGs.

BTW Samay MP channel has excellent coverage of the Sukma incident.

Rest have cursory bash NaMo and RNS type of coverage.
English media didn't even know what happened to start outrage.

Only after Constable Sher Mohammed's mother's talk they suddenly discovered secular jawan and toned down the rhetoric.

Even BRF did not post the raw news reports but gave erroneous opinions.

from hindi article link given by Sicanta:
-naxal fully dominated the area even after killing the jawans and did not flee as indicated by other sources, they were hiding all over around.
-they continued to fire preventing rescue op
-also they suffered loss of 3 cadres only who were quickly burnt by villagers near by
-they climed on trees and formed a V shaped around, naxals fired from many directions
-once again they used arrow bomb (arrow tip tied w IED), many did not explode on impact
-they dominated the area for quite a while
-while returning from area news correspondent survived narrowly when he was fired upon

interesting link between Indian naxals and international armed laal jhanda groups:
LINKS WITH INTERNATIONAL OUTFITS
According the Ministry of Home Affairs' reply in the Lok Sabha recently, the naxals have links with Maoist groups operating in Philippines, Turkey and Europe.
MoS Home Kiren Rijiju told the Lok Sabha that the CPI(Maoist) is "a member of the Coordination Committee of Maoist Parties and Organisations of South Asia."
In a written reply, Rijiju said "The so-called 'People's War' being waged by the CPI(Maoist) against the Indian state has also drawn support from several Maoist fringe organisations located in Germany, France, Turkey, Italy etc."
Inputs indicate that some senior cadres of the Communist Party of Philippines imparted training to the cadres of CPI (Maoist) in 2005 and 2011, the MHA reply said.
Now, the Modi government is understood to have asked the security forces to draw a detailed plan to decisively tackle the naxal threat in the country particularly Chhattisgarh.

Sukma attack: How friends turned foes as Naxals killed 25 CRPF jawans
this friendly relationship was once shared between the villagers of the Burkapal hamlet and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans.

The villagers were not only supportive but also acted as informers for the security forces updating them about the Naxal activities going on in and around the Maoist hotbed of Bastar.

The relationship was so closely shared due to the proximity of the 74 CRPF battalion camp with the Burkapal village.

To know how this fruitful relationship turned sour, ANI did a ground research and talked with the CRPF personnel as well.

On reaching the site of the dreadful incident, our ANI reporter saw that the villagers were sitting there together. On asking one of the CRPF personnel, he was informed that the people had left the village, post the attack and had returned then only.

It was told that things changed two months back when the head of the village, Madhvi was killed by Naxalites.

Madhvi was a helping hand to CRPF and acted as their informer, but post his death even the villagers stopped visiting the security camp and distanced themselves from the personnel.

Sukma attack: CRPF asked for new tech for faster roads but…
CRPF OFFICERS admit that Maoists were able to target a battalion in Sukma Monday, leading to 25 deaths, because of the predictability of the route taken by the personnel to reach their destination — a road-construction site. With a kilometre of construction in such terrain taking 15-20 days, they say faster road work is the only solution.
However, a proposal to adopt a new technology that would cut the time taken to construct a 1-km road stretch to just around two days has been gathering dust with the Chhattisgarh government for at least three years, sources told The Indian Express.
lack of solid road has been cited by many experts as a key reason why Naxals are able to target CRPF

Sonu, Situ & Arjun local naxal leaders behind dastardly attack, not Hidma.

Centre gives forces a ‘hit list’, wants Naxal morale broken
NEW DELHI: Following Monday's ghastly Maoist strike in Sukma that claimed the lives of 25 CRPF personnel+ , the government has asked the security forces to focus counter-offensive operations on "highvalue targets", including south Bastar divisional commander Raghu, head of Jagargunda area committee Papa Rao, and commander of the first battalion of People's Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) Hidma, who is said to be behind the latest attack.
According to government sources, the CRPF and other forces have been asked to demoralise the Naxalites by targeting their leaders, area commanders and influential members of the 'jan militia'.
There are about 200-250 leaders of different committees and area commanders of Naxalites in Bastar who keep travelling to Jharkhand, Odisha and Maharashtra for coordination as well as to plan attacks on security forces, sources said.
There are an estimated 4,000 armed Naxalite cadres in the Bastar belt, aided by a 10,000-12000-strong 'jan militia'.

"A large number of Naxalites have been arrested since last year, but senior leaders (of the insurgents) who plan ambushes on security forces have been eluding the forces for a long time. There is a need to arrest or eliminate them," said a government official.
" Home minister Rajnath Singh+ has already told the forces to go on an all-out offensive and break the Maoists' dominance in Bastar region, for which the government is ready to provide any number of extra companies (of security forces) and modern technology... It is important to pick these 250 leaders, and important members in the jan militia using robust intelligence," the official added.

Though Captain Udai definitely runs a very professional talk on defense matters but this interview specially how the Brigadier Agarwal was reading, left a bad taste as if this was prepared and practiced. Many suggestions sounded very literary and out of touch from the ground realities, not that something can not be proved otherwise. Maoism is evolving, it is evolving because now China factor vis-a-vis its more vocal confrontations with India has been getting more aggressive. What happened in Sukma is not just leaders escaping from Andhra asserting their effectiveness somewhere else, it is a clear message they remain an element of importance in case any political eye to eye with China.

This interview reminds me of Mumbai Police decades ago talking about Mafia as if it was a social issue run by unemployed boys, before a sane mind started getting rid of them. All unemployed started searching for rightful jobs on their own.

Solution is simple - Development, schools, jobs, political representation is all good and needs to happen but when a force is out there it must be respected. A writ has to be established and it has to be established by the CRPF now. They also need to deal with those who try to play them as well. You need to establish yourself as Men who must be respected. We have examples of such in Rashtriya Rifles.

NaMo appointed the IPS officer who eliminated Veerappan to be in charge of the Naxal operations.
So recognition of need to solve this problem is underway.

My view is it saps the CRPF to devote so many battalions for this problem.
Diverts attention from terrorism from Pakistan.

Okay. So K Vijayakumar has brought in as an Internal security advisor. From what I could make out of his style after reading his book on Veerappan, is that he is more of a "slow & steady" man. Even for Veerappan, when he realized that just throwing bodies at Veerappan would not work, he changed the strategy. Vijayakumar got cooperation from the media, so much that Veerappan was not glorified or given undue attention, while the police worked on building up the intelligence. The book also have a few paragraphs explaining how the entire operation area was divided and given unique code names, and how small but well armed teams operated in these sub-areas. Till then all wireless messages were on the "clear", and Veerappan also could monitor them. Veerappan was smart enough to know even the officer who was speaking based on the style of Tamil used.

Our outrage after each terrorist incident only finds expression on the forum. Having participated in the forum for almost a decade, believe me, it gets tiring and is demotivating. Further, the left wing narrative hogs the MSM and just puts one point of view across. This time, instead of just fulminating here, I reported an abusive twitter handle with thousands of followed that was cheering the deaths of our soldiers. Today, that account was suspended. We should get more organized with reporting Islamist and left wing extremists who cheer for violence or share violent, misleading content. Just one report does not do it, but many reports about the same handle does do it. Instead of abusing and blue on blue here, I think this will actually achieve something in the propaganda wars.

This is a pack of lies. The last statement is a variation of "Muslims cant kill innocent Muslims!" lie that is peddled since Muhammad.

Now genius how are guards with guns innocent! So you did kill them.
