One area of concern. The Modi govt seems to be following the same defensive posture as UPA wrt Maoist violence and Pak sponsored terror leading to heavy loss of life. I would like to see concerted anti-Maoist counter-insurgency operations instead of sitting duck model now being used. With Pak we need to take territory. Otherwise the Pak army will continue with their perfidy. I hope Modi and Doval have a plan.

Saar, pliss refer to the post here on BR about a Naxal leader (forget his name), loudly lamenting the new government's iron fist actions against the Naxal menace. He even lists out the names of the top honchos who have been dispatched by security forces.

So yes, things are very much on the move. It is NOT business as usual.

Also recall Doval Saab admitting that Dawood Bhai is his personal Nishaaana. He is watching and waiting. Once he has solid intel, he will strike, make no mistake.

Yes, I have read that news item but scanning media nothing is coming up post-Modi unless it is all hush-hush. We need to put in place a serious CI op in place with army help either directly or indirectly instead of these CRPF pickets which are just ambush targets and nothing else. I hope it is happening but I don't see info on it. Regarding Pak I think you will be hard put to target Dawood or Hafeez or Lakhvi. Even if you take them out more will be created. Pakis must understand it is a loosing game. Just killing terrorists is not going to do that.

And the current fidayeen attacks are to make Army attack aggressively causing some mistaken firing. And the situation in valley goes back to what it has been last few decades. The fact that such attacks are being launched on security forces directly, suggests a specific counter response from them.

THe reason BRF started discussing Politics in the first place was it took years before we realized that the politicians and media are compromised. Till then discussing politics and questioning loyalties was considered dirty by many including me.

Operation Parakram brought it out in the open that clearly who was with us and who although they might occasionaly reside in India , have powerful positions in India they are openly hostile to India.

New Delhi, Dec 8 (PTI): High alert has been sounded across India that five members of the banned SIMI, who had fled from a Madhya Pradesh jail in 2013, are planning to carry out terror strikes on instructions of Pakistan's spy agency ISI.

Based on the inputs provided by the central intelligence agencies, all states have been asked to look for Mohammad Aijajudden, Mohammad Aslam, Amjad Khan, Zakir Hussain Sadiq and Mehboob Guddu, who have been given the task to carry out terrorist attacks, official sources said.

Karnataka, Maharashtra and Rajasthan have been specifically alerted and told that the terrorists could be hiding in the three states, they said.

"Unn logon ko aacha project diya hain, kuch din intezar karo (These people have been given an important project. Wait for sometime)," one of the intercepted conversations of an ISI official and a handler says.

The last known locations of at least two fugitives happened to be in Karnataka. On October 1, 2013, the five, along with Faisal, the leader of the gang, and another prisoner, made an audacious escape from the district jail in Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh after scaling a 14-foot wall.

While the seventh prisoner surrendered the next day and Faisal was caught in December last year from Barwani in Madhya Pradesh, the five accused are still at large.

Interestingly, Mehboob's mother Najma Bee has disappeared from their home in Khandwa a few months ago and is believed to be hiding along with her son.

The suspects' footprints have been found in Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu.

The group is suspected to be involved in a bank robbery in Karimnagar (Telangana) on February 1, 2014, blast in a Bangalore-Guwahati train at the Chennai Central station that killed a young software engineer, on May 1, 2014 and the July 10, 2014 explosion near Faraskhana and Vishrambag police stations in Pune.

The five were jailed in the first place in June 2011 on charges of murdering policemen, attempts to murder, bank robberies and for inciting communal tension while working for terror group SIMI.
I am not sure why our agencies reveal so much information to the media including the verbatim details of intercepted calls.

For the records. Maoists and Kerala Police fire at each other. Kerala had the Naxal problems in 1960s and 1970s, and K.P had so neatly eradicated them, so much so that the state did not even have their presence for the next 30 odd years. But now things to be slowly changing.
In Wayanad the Thunderbolt Commandos of K.P and a Maoist gang had a face off. The location was a tribal village, in the hilly area of Wayanad. For quite some time Maoists presence has been felt in all the hilly, forested territories of Kerala - especially in the Wayanad and Palakkad districts. This was all in the same forest territory where old pal Veerappan held sway. This huge forest land spans across three states - Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Naxal activities in Kerala have increased manifold: Union Home Ministry (Mathrubhumi: English)
New Delhi: Activities of the Naxals in Kerala have increased manifold and situation in the state has the potential of becoming more serious if immediate preventive measures are not taken, according to a note prepared by the Home Ministry.

In the 17-page note on CPI (Maoist), the Ministry said in recent times, the outfit is focusing on a southern theatre in the tri-junction of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Joint operations by all the three states (Karnataka, TN & Kerala) seems to be the only way out. From local media reports Kerala has already initialised the joint working.

It wasn't like this all the time., I think after Kargil war our agencies have become wise to not take any type of terrorist attack as "Intelligence failure". Media has blamed all hijackings, terrorist attacks, kargil war, etc on "Intelligence Failure" and even police, etc too avoid the responsibility and blame agencies.

This is incredible. Mamta Banerjee is openly aiding a known terrorist using a fabricated crime against a terrorist to keep him out of the NIA's hands. She is really daring the central government to impose president's rule so that she can play victime and win votes in the next election. One she is out of power and is no longer protected by the constitution, the full weight of the State needs to be on her traitorous neck.

^^ From the article:
Bidhannagar police took custody of Sajid, the biggest catch in the Burdwan blast case, in connection with a bike theft racket 24 hours before he was to be produced in court today, shocking NIA sleuths probing the explosion.

Lawyers said there was no bar on an investigative agency taking custody of a person lodged in judicial custody. The police's move, however, has evoked another round of allegations of non-cooperation with a central agency.

Sources said the police should have informed the NIA before taking Sajid into custody as the central agency was probing the Burdwan blast case, adding that it would have been the "ethically correct approach". Several NIA officers had alleged non-cooperation by Bengal police in the initial stage of the October 2 blast probe.
This ridiculous - are there no provisions in the IPC that allows for central agencies to supersede state agencies, as also the magnitude of the charges filed? Relying on what is ethically correct is silly, especially when a 'bike stealing' case is given priority over national security and terrorism.

Revealing so much intelligence to the media including what call they intercepted is borderline treachery. Secondly, i cannot believe Madhya Pradesh police and the NIA thought it was a good idea to place all 5 SIMI terrorists together in the same jail. These are the ones who were involved in Chennai train station blasts and now all of them have escaped and not a peep from Rajnath Singh.

More from the same article. I guess it is time the senior IPS cadre in West Bengal is also severely reprimanded, and ask to mend their ways. If they are all fine to be used as floor-mops of these politicians, they should also be told that it may not work for long. West Bengal is still part of Indian Union.
From the report...
Earlier, another central agency - the Enforcement Directorate - had to move court against the state police for their alleged reluctance to share documents related to the Saradha scam. The CBI had given Bengal police an "ultimatum" on submitting documents related to the scandal.
arshyam wrote:are there no provisions in the IPC that allows for central agencies to supersede state agencies, as also the magnitude of the charges filed?
May be legal experts can give the expert opinion. But I guess NIA can still approach the judiciary to get back this person into their custody. I don't know if there is a provision to hold a person in a police (or judicial) lock up out side the state, especially if the state is not very cooperative. I remember that during IG's emergency rule politicians were housed in prisons which were far away from their mother states.
sanjaykumar wrote:I would not get too excited-there is much disinformation, turning of informers, surveillance involved in counterintelligence procedures. If the five run to their safe houses, make contact with cell organisers etc, that is much more useful.
+1. Infact the alleged jail break of these Jehadis may itself be a game to help the agencies get more clues on more of the sleeper cells. Agreed that they have broken into a bank, and blasted a few bombs. But were they really major crimes? If they were minor, why not allow them to proceed further, get involved further, thus exposing their networks better? I remember that when Police Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma was killed in a shoot out, two junior Jehadis escaped. Police were blamed for it. But what later happened was that these junior Jehadis had made lots of silly mistakes which exposed their network quite a bit.

This is Big news. Beaceful Indian Mujjlim is the brain behind islamic state twitter account co-ordination

Unmasked: the man behind top Islamic State Twitter account
The most influential pro-Islamic State Twitter account to be followed by foreign jihadis - Shami Witness - is shut down after a Channel 4 News investigation uncovers the identity of the man behind it

He spent his mornings, afternoons and evenings sending thousands of tweets of propaganda about the Islamic State militant group, acting as the leading conduit of information between jihadis, supporters, and recruits.

His tweets, written under the name Shami Witness, were seen two million times each month, making him perhaps the most influential Islamic State Twitter account, with over 17,700 followers.
Image
Two thirds of all foreign fighters on Twitter followed him. When a fighter's Twitter account is suspended, he often promoted the new one and urged people to follow it.

He spoke to British jihadis regularly, before they leave to join the Islamic State, after they arrived, and if they died he praised them as martyrs.

He has until now been able to remain anonymous, avoiding questions about his motives and his central role in the Islamic State's propaganda war, but a Channel 4 News investigation can today reveal that the man operating the account is called Mehdi and he is an executive in Bangalore working for an Indian conglomerate.

Channel 4 News has chosen not to reveal his full name as he says his life would be in danger if his true identity was made public.

Mehdi said he would have gone to join Islamic State himself, but his family were financially dependent on him: "If I had a chance to leave everything and join them I might have.. my family needs me here."(This scum is a danger for the country)

On his Facebook pages he regularly shares jokes, funny images and talks about superhero movies, posting pictures of pizza dinners with friends, and Hawaiian parties at work.

Elsewhere on Facebook there are indications of his Islamist ideology, in conversations about Libya and Egyptian uprisings.

After being contacted by Channel 4 News, Mehdi shut down the Shami Witness account.
Social media conflict

A recent report by the Brookings Institute found social media to be one of the key organizational strengths of the Islamic State, finding that it uses such channels "to spread and legitimise IS's ideology, activities, and objectives, and to recruit and acquire international support."

The man behind Shami Witness posted thousands of updates to the @ShamiWitness Twitter account every month, usually from his mobile phone.

Using the @ShamiWitness account he five times tweeted the video of the execution of Peter Hassig, and dozens of Syrian soldiers within minutes of it being uploaded to the internet.

"May allah guide, protect, strengthen and expand the Islamic State ... Islamic State brought peace, autonomy, zero corruption, low crime-rate", he wrote on Twitter in November.

Mehdi said of Iftikhar Jaman, one of the British jihadists from Portsmouth killed fighting for Islamic State, that: "you bros [brothers] talked the talk, walked the walk".

And he said to British fighter Mehdi Hassan "May Allah give you brothers decisive victory there". Hassan later died fighting in Kobane.

To another British fighter he said: "may Allah reward you" and quoted one British fighter's suggested that the rebel Islamic Front poses a greater risk to the Islamic State than the secularist rebels of the Free Syrian Army.

ShamiWitness seemed to express glee at the deaths and rapes of Kurdish fighters on Twitter(Typical ijjlamic trait, what's new in it?), but later said that this comment was taken out of context.

He had written and later deleted the tweet where he said: "@ArjDnn I should thank PKK for recruiting female fighters, specially the ones caught alive by rebels. lol".

But in his real life, he had spoken out against rape on Facebook
.

Sachin Ji,

Twitter timeline #shamiwitness suggests, he has 'allegedly' written articles for western media & important source of information for Libya, Syria & Iraq. Western journalists who promoted him are distancing themselves from him, claiming he is just a source of information & they are not aware of his identity.

He has been a source of information since 2011. I don't know what the previous administration were doing, disappointed with BJP govt too. They had no clue what this guy is up to. Catching this guy early & 'extracting' information from him should be one of the main task. He potentially could have more information about jihadist modules.

'Catch him' on what legal grounds? He's a fan of a group that are not even illegal in India? Think about it. He has never made any anti-india statements or declared affiliation or sympathy with paki/SIMI groups. The only thing he will be useful for is to share info on indians who might have gone to Syria (we already have a good idea on who has gone regardless).

GoI already knew about him through interrogations of Areef Majeed who was arrested on his return to India.

This guy will be caught under public pressure, interrogated and probably freed - he'll squeal all he knows.

He only became a hardcore ISIS supporter in the last 1 year. There's a lot of intra-jihadi politics that this guy knows - its beyond most of the ordinary observers of the syrian conflict and investigators won't even understand what it all means.
