Levity aside, Japan and historical India are two cultures that acknowledged and celebrated/deified the concept of fertility. As contrasted to the desert notions of clonic/miraculous perpetuation of humanity, contrary to notions of biology and good common sense.

At least the act of self-gratification is not subversive to the dominant religion in these societies which may explain the rapidly emptying churches as lurid images become more accessible via technology.

Meanwhile, back to normal
Asked when the two countries will hold the postponed drill, Song Young-moo told parliament he and his U.S. counterpart, Jim Mattis, would make an announcement between March 18 and the start of April.
“The exercise was postponed according to the spirit of the Olympics,” Song said. “We have agreed to uphold the basis until after the Paralympics...and not to confirm nor deny anything regarding what we would do after that until we announce it”. Song added inter-Korean talks had not come about as a direct result of the postponed drill.

I was beginning to worry about the stock prices of weapons manufacturers, what with even the holy AR-15 under threat, and cheerleaders replacing artillery.

And how the heck is this possible?
capable of stealing documents from computers that aren't connected to the internet
Muggers can do that, but hackers?
"Their malware is quite sophisticated and is capable of stealing documents from the air-gapped or disconnected networks," says a CrowdStrike intelligence paper. "Primary targets include government, military, defense, finance, energy and electric utility sectors." ..Keeping sensitive information on computers disconnected from the internet is a primary method of defending it from hackers. The ability to jump that "air gap," was once limited to a small number of sophisticated countries, but it has become more common, experts say. For example, last year, researchers showed how a tiny drone can steal information by reading a computer's blinking LED lights.

Half million SoKos sign a petition: to ban their own wimmens from Olympics!
The drama began on Monday, when Kim, Park and teammate Noh Seon-yeong finished seventh in the 500m team pursuit heats. Team speed skaters normally skate bunched close together to reduce drag, but Kim and Park left the struggling Noh far behind. She finished four seconds behind her teammates.

Pence ignored by Kim Slim Sis
planned to meet several North Korean officials during his visit to Asia earlier this month, but the meeting was called off at the last minute after Pence repeatedly used his trip to slam the regime, The Washington Post first reported on Tuesday.
The meeting was supposed to take place between Pence and members of the North Korean delegation at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, including Kim Jong Un’s sister Kim Yo Jong and North Korea’s nominal head of state, Kim Yong Nam. It was arranged two weeks before Pence’s five-day trip across Asia after the CIA was informed the North Korean’s hoped to meet with the vice president, according to the Post.
However, North Korea decided to cancel the clandestine meeting just hours before it was set to take place at the South Korean president’s residence in Seoul.

It's nice to have a dedicated thread where only UBCN posts. Repent, o ye of low faith!
IOO (In Our Opinion from Ulan Bator Conspiracy Network) Kim Young One has come to the same conclusion as we did: That DT is not going to be deterred by claims of one or 2 nukes aimed at West Coast donkey-dominated cities. Just like Saddam's Fist of Allah did not get him anything except disaster. So cheen masters twisted arm of SoKo kimono-shiverer; probably kicked up the corruption storm that got predecessor jailed, and convinced Young One to go on knees to SoKo seeking to join Olympics.

They are following the strategy of the Naranath Bhranthan, who ate one rice grain at a time to keep the predators from attacking since wild animals are too polite to attack someone who is eating.

But no such niceties apply to DT-Pentagon planning AFAIK, so I think the war is still "on", except delayed a bit until the snow cover is off the targets.

Plus, 2 years from now, J-20 Stealth Thundaars will outnumber F-35s 3 to 1 per what we posted in MILForum yesterdin and have the range to hit the US fleet as well as fight BVR. So one day US may find out that NOKO and even SO KO are in the no-fry zone extended from the South Cheen Ocean and can't do diddly about it except come back home. So we remain convinced that US ***HAS**** to go to war very soon.

And right on cue, here comes the Naval Blockade (threat):
Reuters Whirled Neuj:
Exclusive: U.S. prepares high-seas crackdown on North Korea sanctions evaders - sources. Matt Spetalnick, Phil Stewart, David Brunnstrom
More ophishially:
U.S. imposes more North Korea sanctions, Trump warns of 'phase two'
And Beijing confirms it:
Trump announces new North Korea sanctions
By Kaitlan Collins, Zachary Cohen, Donna Borak and Dan Merica, CNN
Updated 12:00 AM ET, Sat February 24, 2018..
In its latest step,..the US government imposed sanctions against 27 entities and 28 vessels either registered or flagged in several countries, including North Korea, China and Singapore...China-based Weihai World-Shipping Freight and Shanghai, China-based Shangahi Dongfeng Shipping Co. Ltd. and Hong Kong-based Shen Zhong International Shipping were also sanctioned.
And VP Pencce conveys his Courage:
Pence attracted media spotlight as the head of the U.S. delegation to the Olympics in Pyeongchang where he sat only a few feet away from the sister of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un during the opening ceremonies but did not acknowledge her.
Like UBCN predicted, Pentagon/WHOTUS will be getting mijjiles ready, cheerleaders, Politburo sistahs or not. They HAVE to. And now a backdown becomes harder to explain.

Note that VP Pence went there and came back, main achievement being that he DID NOT talk to anyone.

Now this:
(President Ivanka) Trump has been briefed on this," Mnuchin said. "She has been part of the team. She had dinner with President Moon and had a private discussion in advance about this occurring and this has been an interagency process." Asked if she had the appropriate security clearance, Mnuchin said, "She has the appropriate access to (de)brief the president. (The President) said her visit was to "reaffirm our commitment to our maximum pressure campaign to ensure that the Korean Peninsula is denuclearized. Moon said that the denuclearization dialogue and the inter-Korean dialogue on the Korean Peninsula cannot go separately, and this process should progress hand-in-hand. Moon said North Korea's participation in the Olympics was an "opportunity" for inter-Korean dialogue, which had "led to lowering of tensions on the peninsula and an improvement in inter-Korean relations." He also thanked "President (daddy) Trump's strong support for inter-Korean dialogue."
You begin to see the sequence: VP to freeze his musharraf watching fire-hydrant maneuvers in the Ice Dancing with strict orders to keep mouth shut and eyes averted from any NoKo jarnails, bibis etc, and the Real President to convey the bared teeth along with news of the high-seas naval blockade.
In other news, DT has cancelled the International Space Station, probably imposing $4B /yr cut on the National Agints 4 Space Advertising. Enough to pay for 1 new CVN per year.

High time. Remember Shekhar Gupta eating the scraps off Dictator Musharraf's breakfast table?

Vice President Pence fired back Thursday at the “fawning” media coverage of Kim Jong Un’s sister following their appearance at the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Winter Games, reminding reporters that she represents the “most oppressive regime on the planet.” The vice president used his address to the Conservative Political Action Conference to settle his score with the media, after Kim Yo Jong, at least initially, attracted some positive coverage for her supposed charm offensive in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Pence, meanwhile, at the time took some criticism for not standing during the opening-ceremonies appearance of North and South Korean athletes.
“For all the media fawning over the sister of the North Korean dictator, I think it’s important that every American knows who this person is and what she’s done,” Pence said Thursday. “The sister of Kim Jong Un is a central pillar of the most tyrannical and oppressive regime on the planet, an evil family clique that brutalizes, subjugates, starves and imprisons its 25 million people...“Even the United Nations reported that in their words, the gravity, scale and nature of these violations reveal a state that does not have a parallel in the contemporary world,” Pence said. “That’s why the United States government has sanctioned her for her role in [abetting] North Korea's human rights abuses and crimes against humanity.” Pence called on Americans to remember Otto Warmbier, the American college student who was detained in North Korea, and then died after being released in a coma. “I say the United States of America doesn’t stand with murderous dictatorships, we stand up to murderous dictatorships except those in Pakistan and China, and we will keep standing with our mijjiles strong until North Korea stops threatening our country, our allies or until they abandon their nuclear and ballistic missiles once and for all,” Pence said.”
Oh-oh! NOTE THE NEW LANGUAGE: Now Noko only has to "stop threatening" not abandon their mijjiles!!!!!!

Notice how Gravitational Waves have subsided to nothing since the budget for the 3rd bloated boondoggle Detector facility and another 10,000 grad houris for All-Night Vigils got approved, hain? Q.E.D.

Now I came here actually to state UBCNews' grave concern that Biss is likely to break out. Even started re-investing some of the paise held back from October/Nov. sell-off. Kim Thin One seems to be looking at offers from Seoul Resorts Inc. My bet is that they showed him the "Salad buffet" at the Pizza Place in Seoul where I put on 7 kilos in 1 week. (YUMMEEEE!!).

But DT's justifiable fear is that Kim Thin One is merely buying time, because the 3 carrier groups are burning the Pentagon's budget at $$100M per day, probably. KTO reasons that the carrier groups and B-52s have maybe 1 -2 months max before they have to head back home, or they'll start running into each other.

Likewise, Orange Bundar can do the same calculations. A war may be $2B per day, but if over in 2 weeks, that's still a heck of a lot better than having a demoralized fleet dragging back into San Diego with no war. So the Gulf of Tonkin Incident's ghosts are dancing all over the Korean coast.

US diplomats "blindsided": Orange Bandar to meet Kim Young One.

This is why the Bandar is the most brilliant POTUS since George Dubya the 1st.
President Donald Trump has agreed to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un by May, the White House and the South Korean national security adviser said Thursday evening.
"President Trump greatly appreciates the nice words of the South Korean delegation and President Moon. He will accept the invitation to meet with Kim Jong Un at a place and time to be determined. We look forward to the denuclearization of North Korea. In the meantime, all sanctions and maximum pressure must remain," White House press secretary Sarah Sanders announced in a statement.
The stunning announcement came after Kim extended the invitation to Trump through South Korean officials who met with the President on Thursday. Trump would be the first sitting US president to meet with his North Korean counterpart, a stunning diplomatic breakthrough -- albeit one with uncertain consequences.
Trump signaled in a tweet that he was optimistic about the possibilities: "Kim Jong Un talked about denuclearization with the South Korean Representatives, not just a freeze. Also, no missile testing by North Korea during this period of time. Great progress being made but sanctions will remain until an agreement is reached. Meeting being planned!"

So the two head honchos of their respective nations are to meet! Great news, each dying to show how big their "Buttons" are,and a massive kick up the backside of the neo-Cold War establishment in foggy bottom. If Trump and Dear Young Un Kim meet, hug each other and even if a piddly bit is achieved,it will be a massive breakthrough easing global tensions enormously and the thought/threat of WW3 erupting from the Korean peninsula.
who knows,Trump and Kim may be front runners for the Nobel peace Prize oif something positive comes out of it!

There will be huge moves to scuttle the meeting,by possibly putting more pressure on to impeach Trump over the Ru allegations, etc. What the washington establishment do not want to ever happen is the defusing of tensions around the globe especially with the former communist bloc,or remnants of it,as the well-trodden roadmap is there of decades of covert and overt policies and ops, that hs kept many an arms industry and its spin-offs in the clover.

President Donald Trump has accepted North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un's dramatic offer to meet, and he'll do it by May, a South Korean official said Thursday evening.

South Korea's national security adviser Chung Eui-yong informed U.S. press of the expected in-person conversation and said the goal of the unprecedented meeting between the two countries' leaders is permanent denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Chung did not say where the meeting would take place.

A half hour after the foreign official announced the meeting, steps from the West Wing, the White House confirmed Trump's participation. But it did not second Chung's claim that talks would be held within the next two months.

A statement from White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said the place and time of the meeting was still being worked out.

'President Trump greatly appreciates the nice words of the South Korean delegation and President Moon. He will accept the invitation to meet with Kim Jong Un at a place and time to be determined,' Sanders said. 'We look forward to the denuclearization of North Korea. In the meantime, all sanctions and maximum pressure must remain.'

South Korea's national security adviser Chung Eui-yong told U.S. press that the goal of the face-to-face talk is to achieve permanent denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula +24

A U.S. official said the meeting would take place in 'a matter of a couple of months' but did not commit the president to a face-to-face with Kim this spring.

Kim made the overture to U.S. president - who has repeatedly called the North Korean dictator 'Little Rocket Man' - orally, through Chung, the person said.

'He conveyed that he wants to meet with President Trump as quickly as possible,' the senior official stated.

The North Koreans are offering to suspend their nuclear missile testing program, Chung told White House officials before he briefed press from the building's North Lawn.

Chung said that Kim understands and accepts the fact that joint U.S.-South Korean military exercises will continue.

The senior U.S. official who spoke to reporters after Chung's televised statement said the stiff punishing actions on North Korea would also stay in place.

'At this point we're not even talking about negotiations,' the official said of a plan to hold North Korea to its word that it would freeze its illicit nuclear and ballistic missile development programs.

President Trump reiterated the point in a tweet that followed.

'Kim Jong Un talked about denuclearization with the South Korean Representatives, not just a freeze. Also, no missile testing by North Korea during this period of time. Great progress being made but sanctions will remain until an agreement is reached. Meeting being planned!' the U.S. president said.
Stiff punishing actions on North Korea will continue, despite the overture, the U.S. stressed

News that Trump had agreed to meet the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un sent Asian stock markets surging and the yen tumbling.

It provided a springboard for Asian markets, with Seoul surging 1.1 percent and Tokyo ending 0.5 percent higher.

Hong Kong added more than one percent, Sydney and Singapore each rose 0.3 percent, and Shanghai jumped 0.6 percent. Taipei, Manila, Wellington and Mumbai were also higher.

'It's a big deal - there's no question this is a positive move,' Ian Bremmer, president of Eurasia Group, a political-risk research and consulting firm in New York, told Bloomberg TV.

'But also there is the possibility that it could go badly, that Trump could be embarrassed that they make an agreement that Kim Jong Un could backslide on.'

Hopes that the two could reach some sort of agreement also led to a plunge in the yen, which is considered a go-to safe currency in times of volatility and uncertainty. The dollar jumped to its highest level in a week.

Going up: The benchmark South Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose 26.37 points to 2,459.45, after the announcement that the leaders of the US and North Korea will meet +24

The announcement on the White House lawn came almost exactly 24 hours after Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the US was 'a long way from negotiations' with the North.

Chung had met Kim earlier in the week in Pyongyang, the dictator's capital. After relaying parts of his conversation to reporters in Seoul and appraising South Korean President Moon Jae-in of the situation, Chung flew to Washington.

At the White House on Thursday, Chung and other South Korean officials briefed the president and his national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, as well Trump's chief of staff, John Kelly, his secretary of defense, James Mattis, and the director of national intelligence, Dan Coats. U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was traveling abroad in Ethiopia.

'I explained to President Trump that his leadership and his maximum pressure policy, together with international solidarity, brought us to this juncture. I expressed President Moon Jae-in's personal gratitude for President Trump's leadership,' Chung said at an outdoor briefing position that's typically used by lawmakers and organization heads who want to speak to the press after White House meetings.

Chung says he relayed Kim's commitment to denuclearization.

'Kim pledged that North Korea will refrain from any further nuclear or missile tests. He understands that the routine joint military exercises between the Republic of Korea and the United States must continue. And he expressed his eagerness to meet President Trump as soon as possible,' the South Korean official said.

'President Trump appreciated the briefing and said he would meet Kim Jong-un by May to achieve permanent denuclearization,' Chung said.

Trump had pre-empted Chung by saying that South Korea would making a major announcement this evening at 7pm EDT on North Korea.

The president popped into the White House press briefing room on Thursday evening at close of business and told a small contingent of reporters who just happened to be present that an announcement was coming.

Peace move: Kim Jong Un held face to face talks with South Korea's delegation this week - and has passed a message to Trump offering to meet

The U.S. president gave no indication of what would be declared but suggested with the surprise appearance that the news would be positive.

WHERE WILL THE SUMMIT BE?
All that has been confirmed so far is that the meeting will take place by the end of May.

If it happens in Pyongyang, Kim is sure to put on a spectacular show for his visitor, but for America it would run the risk of appearing that Trump is coming to pay his respects.

The Demilitarized Zone that divides the two Koreas - where Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in are to meet in late April - is probably the favourite at this stage, offering ease of access for both sides, a controlled environment, and facilities already in place.

It would also appeal to the two men's sense of drama.

A more neutral location with less weight of symbolism such as Beijing or Geneva - Kim was educated in Switzerland - would mean the three key players would have to plan events with another host nation.

Furthermore, it would involve a journey on both sides and Kim has not left the North since inheriting power from his father in 2011.

Seoul would most likely be unthinkable to Pyongyang, and Washington even more so, but on the other hand no one would have predicted three months ago that Kim's sister would visit the South Korean capital within weeks.

United Nations headquarters in New York - Trump's home town - would mean Kim stepping on American soil but it has a long history of hosting a rogues´ gallery of world leaders.

Events have moved so far, so quickly and in such unforeseen ways that no option can immediately be ruled out.

White House press officers scrambled to make good on Trump's pledge, waiting until just 30 minutes before the time of the announcement to say where it would take place and that the update from would come from Chung.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in said the planned summit will be a 'historical milestone' that will put the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula 'really on track.'

Moon in a statement read out by his spokesman on Friday also complimented Trump for accepting Kim's invitation for a summit, saying Trump's leadership will be praised 'not only by the residents of South and North Korea but every peace-loving person around the world.'

Moon is also preparing for a summit with Kim at a border village between the Koreas in April.

Talks are a 180 from Trump's complaint last fall that Tillerson, his secretary of state, was 'wasting his time' with diplomacy.

Tillerson had suggested that officials from the U.S. and North Korea sit down for talks without preconditions only to have the White House assert that a conversation would only take place if Kim agreed to abandon his nuclear weapons program.

Tensions began to thaw as the Winter Olympics approached. The games, held just across the border from Pyongyang in South Korea, provided an opportunity for the two Koreas to renew ties.

Earlier this week, Chung spent two days in the neighboring country that ended with a proffer to the U.S. to halt nuclear and missile testings and take up talks.

Trump said Tuesday that a 'very good dialogue' had opened up with North Korea as he cautiously approached Pyongyang's proposition.
He told reporters in the Oval Office that the conversations had yielded progress, striking an optimistic tone.

'We're gonna see. We're gonna see,' he told a journalist asking about North Korea's commitment to ending its nuclear weapons program if it no longer felt threatened. 'They seem to be acting positively, but we're gonna see.'

President Donald Trump cautiously approached North Korea's offer to freeze its nuclear program while it holds a 'candid dialogue' with the United States on Tuesday
First, Trump sent out a tweet on Tuesday morning that said, 'We will see what happens!'

The U.S. president said he wants to take the 'proper' pathway, which he suggested was diplomatic talks, 'But we are prepared to go either way.'

'And as I said, hopefully we'll go in the very, very peaceful, beautiful path. We're prepared to go whichever path is necessary,' he added. 'I think we're having very good dialogue, and you're gonna certainly find out very soon what's happening, but we have, we have made progress, there's no question about it.'

That morning, Trump warned North Korean despot Kim Jong-un, 'The U.S. is ready to go hard in either direction!'

The U.S. president said then that 'possible progress' toward talks had been made, but it could also be a 'false hope.'

On Saturday evening, Trump said that the North Koreans had reached out and his administration would be meeting with Kim's government.

'They, by the way, called up a couple of days ago and said, 'We would like to talk.' And I said, 'So would we, but you have to de-nuke, you have to de-nuke.' So, let's see what happens,' the president stated. 'But we will be meeting and we'll see if anything positive happens.'

An National Security Council spokesman did not respond to DailyMail.com's request for clarification, and a senior official would not tell reporters during a call on Tuesday afternoon if talks were already under way.

Then he said that talks were 'possible' -- but they could also be a 'false hope' -- and the 'U.S. is ready to go hard in either direction' +24

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven offered Tuesday during a joint press conference with Trump at the White House to mediate talks with the North Koreans, if that is what Trump wants.

His country maintains an embassy in Pyongyang and serves at the United States' protectorate there.

Löfven said it's not up to Sweden to solve the dispute, however, he believes that the North Koreans trust his nation to act as arbiter.

'If the president decides, the key actors decide, if they want us to help out,' he said, 'we'll be there.'

Other potential meeting places were the demilitarized zone, or DMZ, between North and South Korea, in addition to Seoul, Beijing and Tokyo.

A senior U.S. official said Thursday evening that Trump had spoke to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The official did not say if a call to China's Xi Jinping was also underway.

Complicating a conversation between Trump and Xi was the U.S. president's announcement on Thursday afternoon that he was slapping a 25 percent tariff on imported steel and a 10 percent penalty on imported aluminum in an aggressive bid to prevent Chinese dumping and boost American metal workers.

d meeting South Korean National Security Director Chung Eui-yong, in Pyongyang, has said he is ready to discuss de-nuclearization with the U.S.

A week ago, Trump signaled his openness to a talk with Kim -- if it took place 'under the right conditions.'

'Otherwise, we're not talking,' Trump told United States governors.

He commented that Kim 'wants to talk, as of last night' and said 'we want to talk also.'

Trump went on to make a familiar complaint about his predecessors, blasting former President Bill Clinton and others for failing to keep North Korea in check.

'The Clinton administration spent billions and billions of dollars. They gave them billions. They built things for them. They went out of their way, and the day after the agreement was signed, they continued with nuclear research. It was horrible.'

Continuing, Trump said, 'The Bush administration did nothing — both. The Obama administration wanted to do something. He told me it's the single biggest problem that this country has. But they didn't do anything.

'And it would have been much easier, in those days, than it is now. I think most people understand that. But we've been very tough with them.'

Trump's administration has led an international charge to cripple North Korea's economy and bring Kim to his knees. The advance will not cease, the U.S. has said, until the rogue dictator abandons his nuclear ambitions.

At his White House news conference on Tuesday, Trump said he believes that the North Koreans are sincere in their offer to halt nuclear and missile tests if the United States sits down for talks.

'But I think they're sincere also because the sanctions,' he assessed. 'The sanctions have been very, very strong and very biting. And we don't want that to happen. So I really believe they are sincere. I hope they're sincere. We're going to soon find out.'

The Pyeongchang Games provided a long-awaited opening for the kind of detente that could lead to substantive talks between North Korea and South Korea, along with the United States and its allies.

The two Koreas marched under one flag at the opening ceremony of the games, and Kim sent his sister, Kim Yo Jong, to the South to head the North's delegation.

A South Korean envoy lead by Chung returned Tuesday to Seoul from a meeting with Kim in Pyongyang where the North Koreans are said to have offered to halt nuclear tests for the time being if the United States agrees to talks.

North Korea also expressed its willingness during the two-day summit to put a total moratorium on its nuclear program if the South backs off from military behavior it perceives to be a threat.

Chung said said that Kim promised not to use nuclear or conventional weapons against South Korea in the conversation where the two countries also agreed to open a hotline between their leaders 'to ease military tension and have close coordination' and meet for another round of talks in April.

The next summit is expected to take place in Panmunjom. It will be only the third inter-Korean set of talks ever held and the first in more than a decade.

The last time the rival countries held high-level talks was in 2007, when the North was under Kim's father's command. A summit in 2000 also took place while Kim Jong Il controlled the North. The elder Kim passed away in 2011, giving rise to Kim Jong-un's reign.

Chung said Tuesday that the younger Kim, 34, said he wants to 'write a new history of national reunification' during a four-hour dinner this week in Pyongyang.

US Senator Lindsey Graham said in a statement on Thursday that he hoped for peace, but warned Kim that 'it will be the end' of him if he tried to take advantage of Trump.

Former NBA star Dennis Rodman, who has traveled several times to North Korea and is one of the few Americans to have met its leader, praised Trump for his decision.

Rodman told The Associated Press he looks forward to returning to the pariah nation for 'basketball diplomacy' in the coming months.

He said: 'Well done, President Trump. You're on the way to a historical meeting no U.S. president has ever done.'

As the Olympics unfolded in South Korea, the United States loudly warned the world that Kim was putting on a charm offensive.

Vice President Mike Pence, who led the U.S. delegation to the opening ceremony, urged the international community, and South Korea, not let up on the North until Kim fully capitulates when it comes to his building of nuclear weapons.

'The policy of the U.S. is the denuclearization of North Korea. The maximum pressure campaign is going to continue and intensify. All options are on the table,' a senior official said of Pence's message to Moon as he departed the peninsula.

Pence announced during the trip, and the United States followed up with, a rigorous set of sanctions that the Trump administration described as the largest and most aggressive to date.

Treasury blacklisted one person, 27 companies and 28 ships with the action it says was 'aimed at shutting down North Korea's illicit maritime smuggling activities to obtain oil and sell coal.' The sanctions hit entities in Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and Singapore and others.

Steve Mnuchin, the U.S. Treasury Secretary, said that nearly all of North Korea's shipping sector had now been targeted. The total number of sanctions steps since 2005 has now hit 45 - with almost half of the actions coming since Trump took office.

At a press conference later in the day, Trump said he'd make preparations for 'phase two' if the punishing actions are not successful, the outcome of which could be 'very, very unfortunate for the world.'

'But hopefully the sanctions will work,' he said during remarks at a joint White House press conference with the Australian prime minister.

A senior administration official told reporters then, 'The president is clearly frustrated and rightly so over the efforts that have failed in the past and also over the uptick in testing and the advances we've seen in the North Korean program.'

In his Tuesday morning tweets on North Korea, Trump said, 'Possible progress being made in talks with North Korea. For the first time in many years, a serious effort is being made by all parties concerned.

'The World is watching and waiting!' he added. 'May be false hope, but the U.S. is ready to go hard in either direction!'

His comment suggested that military action against North Korea is still in his back pocket, despite the decreased likelihood of a confrontation.

President Trump said Saturday evening during a roast at a dinner in Washington that's held off camera that he 'won't rule out direct talks' with Kim.

'As far as the risk of dealing with a madman is concerned, that's his problem, not mine,' he joked.

Trump went on to say that Kim 'must be a fine man' and that his hardline against North Korea saved the Winter Olympics.

'Without President Trump and his strong attitude they would have never called up and said, 'Hey, we'd love to be in the Olympics together,' ' he recalled South Korea's Moon as saying. 'It was heading for disaster and now we're talking.'

Diving off script in the 35-minute speech that was supposed to stay light and last approximately 10 minutes, Trump said, 'Maybe positive things are happening. I hope that's true, and I say that in all seriousness.

'But we will be meeting, and we'll see if anything positive happens. It's been a long time,' he said. 'It's a problem that should have been fixed a long time ago.'

The insults Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un have hurled at each other:
President Donald Trump accepting an offer to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is a stunning turn of events after a year of heated verbal warfare that included crude insults and mutual threats of nuclear attacks.

While the move to hold a summit appears to be an effort to ease decades of animosity between the US and North Korea, it comes after months of the two leaders trading insults and Trump threatening to 'totally destroy' the country.

From Trump calling Kim a 'rocket man' and 'short and fat' to the US President being labeled 'mentally deranged' there has been no shortage of nasty insults between the leaders.

So ahead of the summit - for which a time and place is yet to be determined - here is a look at some of the more notable war of words between Trump and Kim so far.

Short and fat:

Back in November last year, Trump hurled an insult at Kim during a trip to Vietnam calling him 'short and fat'.

'Why would Kim Jong-un insult me by calling me 'old,' when I would NEVER call him 'short and fat?' Oh well, I try so hard to be his friend - and maybe someday that will happen!' he tweeted.

He was retaliating after North Korean media had labeled Trump as an 'old lunatic'.

Rocket Man:

During his address to the UN General Assembly back in September, Trump said the US would 'totally destroy North Korea' if forced to defend itself or its allies.

He also referred to Kim as 'Rocket Man' during his speech.

'The United States has great strength and patience, but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea,' Trump said.

'Rocket man is on a suicide mission for himself and for his regime.'
Mentally deranged:

Kim hit back to the Rocket Man comments accusing Trump of 'mentally deranged behavior.'

He said he would 'surely and definitely tame the mentally deranged US dotard with fire'.

Trump responded on Twitter the following morning: 'Kim Jong Un of North Korea, who is obviously a madman who doesn't mind starving or killing his people, will be tested like never before!'

Big button:

Kim said that he has a nuclear button on his desk in his New Year's address this year.

In the same speech, he also called for improved relations with South Korea and suggested sending a delegation to the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Trump quickly responded saying that he has a bigger and more powerful nuclear button.

'North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the 'Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times.' Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!' he tweeted:

Ever since Trump was elected, the two leaders have traded barbs about threats of potential nuclear attacks.

After North Korea announced they had tested a series of missiles, Trump said the country had best not make more threats or 'they will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen.'

North Korea hours later announces a plan to launch a salvo of missiles toward the US territory of Guam, a major military hub in the Pacific.

Other threats of nuclear attacks:

Kim said in his New Year's address in 2017 that preparations for launching an intercontinental ballistic missile had 'reached the final stage.'

A day later Trump, who was then president-elect, tweeted: 'North Korea just stated that it is in the final stages of developing a nuclear weapon capable of reaching parts of the US It won't happen!'

Xi is as always playing Trump like a Jing Erhu.

Xi ensured that US-sponsored sanctions against NoKo would never have any impact to the extent of threatening the regime's survival. Meanwhile he muscled/persuaded Moon Jae-In of SoKo to pursue abject appeasement diplomacy so that any military option for the US against NoKo was effectively swept off the table.

By now Xi, like most of the world, has recognized that Trump has no interest whatsoever in actually achieving strategic goals for the United States. Nice if they are achieved, too bad if they aren't; what matters is that he can claim that they were achieved and take credit for it. What Trump wants is a photo-op and the opportunity to brag that he has made significant gains with North Korea through his personal deal-making skills. His political support base will, as always, be least interested in the factual truth of his claim. By meeting Kim Jong Un, Trump can be made to LOOK like an important international statesman on FOX News, social media etc. in time for the 2018 election, and that's all that matters.

Here's my prediction. NoKo will agree to some sort of "self-imposed moratorium" on nuke testing, perhaps reserving the rights to launch dingdongs as part of a peaceful space program. They don't need a strategic arsenal anyway and Xi wasn't really about to let them have one anyway; however, for domestic consumption Kim Jong Un will remain the leader of a NWS. In exchange, NoKo will get relief from sanctions which (thanks to China) weren't actually affecting them in any case, plus maybe some economic incentives from SoKo if not the US. Trump will walk away claiming this as a great victory, tweeting that NoKo has been "denuked" as promised. The USN CBGs who were bleeding millions of dollars a day on the Korean Peninsula deployment will be able to go home.

The real victor will be Xi. He will have effectively drawn SoKo out of involvement with any future US-led "quad", and effectively weakened the "quad" itself (the Japanese will certainly feel betrayed by the US capitulation and have far less confidence in any such grouping going forward.) The US will make concessions to Beijing on the Indo China Sea in return for their "help" with facilitating the NoKo talks. Every other country on the periphery of China will get an important message: there is no alternative to letting Beijing adopt you as a godchild. Under Xi's supremacy you can behave any damn way you want and nothing will happen. The Americans meanwhile are the sort who betray any "allies" stupid enough to rely on them, partly because they are inept and partly because they are in severe decline relative to China.

All true, no real disagreement, but there IS another way to look at this.

Here is a voice from the distant past:
Executive Summary The evolution of the DPRK crisis is examined in the context of the national interests of DPRK's immediate neighbors. The role of the PRC is highlighted, considering its history, geopolitical interests and perceptions of strategic opportunities. A strategic direction based on the eventual goal of reunification is conceptualized. It is argued that taking this route would avoid the grave dangers that attend possible PRC exploitation of recent U.S. policies. Current U.S. moves provide encouraging signs along such a direction.
Point made is very simple: The way to solve the Korean situation is for the US to support Korean Unification. There are no other alternatives: a war would play right into Eleven's hands.

OTOH, NoKo may have mijjiles, but the mijjiles are no protection as DT showed with his brinkmanship and his 3 CVN groups and B-52s. SoKo still has the jobs and the food, and that is what NoKo really wants. Xi cannot give them that, but SoKo can. US and SoKo can use NoKo labor to counter Chinese competitiveness for a decade or two.

As the authors might say of DT:
Nyaw he's using Mah Brain!!
This is why DT's sudden decision is causing such khulji from Beijing to Tokyo to DupleeCity and Foggy Bottom. DT has hit on the one and only solution. OTOH, Putin does not lose in any particular manner. He can sell oil and Siberian tundra gas to NoKo, now they will have $$ to buy it.

If all this works out, the Nobel Biss Prize should go to the athletes and cheerleaders who marched at the Olympics under one flag. That one stunning gesture showed the huge middle finger to the world's superpowers, and left no doubt as to what Koreans across the DMZ wanted for themselves.

After that there was no room for doubt: there is only one solution. Reunification.

Two more items:
1) Cheen said to be in takleef
Chinese jitters over US-North Korea talks
Yes, Reunification signed in, say, Taipei or Singapore is a major H&D blow to cheen.
2)Realization dawns:
It is in the interest of both sides to make the meeting a success. Kim will be able to show all North Korea his policy of confrontation worked, which will scotch any internal resistance. Trump will be able to show that his policy of confrontation worked and is delivering results that eluded twelve previous U.S. presidents.

If the negotiations prove to be just the latest chapter in North Korea’s long history of playing hard alternating with extortion, Trump will be able to tell voters he did all he could, and that North Korea will be “in trouble like few nations have ever been.” Trump’s opponents will exult in his failure, but they should fear the fact that many voters will think he did all that he could and will be fine with whatever comes next. Let’s hope the official party includes the American who knows Kim best: Dennis “The Worm” Rodman. Maybe he’ll get a new tattoo for the occasion.
They the article makes a hash of SoKo interests and completely misses the point: REUNIFICATION is a dream for most Koreans. The war veterans are not so gung-ho about receiving their NoKo counterparts, but ultimately the southerners dreamt of marching into Pyongyang, and the northerners want to repeat their twice-done march into Kim il Sung City (Seoul). Reunification on reasonably equitable terms will achieve all the dreams.

And cheen needs to remember that unlike any other POTUS, DT is on good terms with the Czar.

Mmmm... I agree with most of your analysis but not so sure about this bit.

It's anecdotal, I admit, but I worked with a LOT of South Koreans in the US up until about 6 years ago. The topic of reunification would often come up in conversation with my colleagues.

The sense I got was that yes, many South Koreans do subscribe to a sentimental, romanticized notion that the two Koreas should some day reunify... but "not now" was a unanimous qualifier. Particularly among SoKos of our generation, there is a countervailing view rooted in hard pragmatism: we simply can't afford to absorb and bail those guys out. We're not West Germany, and NoKo is both far more populous (relatively) and much less prosperous/developed than the erstwhile DDR, which in fact was doing quite well for a Soviet-Bloc economy in 1989.

SoKo has gone through some really hard times economically; the trauma of the 1997 financial crisis was by their accounts even worse than what Americans faced in 2008, and Germany has never been anywhere near that frail in its recent economic history. The SoKos, understandably, have real and chronic anxieties about unemployment and recession. In some ways the SoKos are even grateful that the Kim Il Sung dynasty runs a tightly fenced-in state and makes it very difficult for NoKos to freely move south and offer competition as cheap labor. For the most part, they will take the bluster and periodic saber-rattling from Pyongyang over an impending economic catastrophe that could be precipitated by any softening of borders (let alone all-out reunification).

I grant this may have changed, though.

Well reunification would be the probable endgame, but IF Fat Kim and Moon sign a peace treaty (the two countries are still technically at war), that would be a big step forwards. NoKo will not give up nukes under any circumstances, as they guarantee its survival.A peace treaty would probably reduce sanctions and increase aid to NoKo, so everyone wins.

The nukes are not to bother SoKo (the radiation would drift north as well) but to scare US. And the US is easily scared, meaning will use CVNs and ICBMs and B-52s and B-2s to reduce fear. So the US will not **ALLOW** SoKO to sign a separate peace with NoKo. If reunification occurs without denuking, then the new nation will be anti-US and hence Seoul will be the first target for the US fear-reduction program. Before that, Sanctions and Tariffs will fly, to strangle the SoKo economy. Japan is not on particularly good terms with SoKo, neither is Cheen, neither is Putin. IOW, SoKo has no friends except maybe India.

So some form of de-nuking is on the cards, and the security guarantee in that case is a villa in Switzerland or south of France or Argentina for Kim Thin One and his retinue. Maybe on the resort island south of SoKo. Maybe a Federation with a Parliament in Seoul or at Panmunjong (at DMZ).

Young ppl in SoKo complain that jobs are hard to find, but I wonder about that in relative terms. Expectations may be too high. I think Northern labor will occupy the lower strata jobs, and maybe remove the need for the 2-year conscription to the Armed Forces. Just that promise will make young SoKos endorse re-unification and raise Moon to Deity level. Also with NoKo labor reducing the average person-hour cost, Korean factories and offshore contracting firms may be able to compete head-on with Japan (they already do) and with Taiwan and PRC. Korean cars for instance are now quite up to and above the standards of the US cars and comparable to Japanese cars in value. So overall, I feel that the Korean economy will receive a massive boost when SoKo technology and NoKo labor are merged. NoKo also has quite a lot of natural resources (incl. uranium).

Young SoKos that one encounters in Yoo Ess are (a) usually refugees dodging the draft and (b) from high social strata, with privileged university education and very white-collar expectations. But SoKo's real strength is the skilled labor, and there I think salaries have risen too high for them to be able to compete with cheen etc.

Anyway, Reunification is an emotional thing. NoKos are not even different in religion from SoKos unlike indiapakistan. They all regard themselves as Koreans.

The thing to notice about SoKo attitudes is that they do say "we have to be careful" but they **DO NOT** express the same love for the nokos as, say, BRFees have for pakis. It is easy to see that underneath the caution there is strong empathy.

Trump sending hawks to NoKo talks

The more I think about this, the more ominous the Tillerson ouster gets. You would think that a decision to talk to KimThinOne is a victory for the Tillerson line, and that Tillerson would have been on the phone when he heard about it, to celebrate and praise his Orangehead Master. But then why fire Tillerson at this time? Answer: Because he flat-out refused to go along with a plan whose aim is to PROVE that talks are a waste of time.

The talks are set for May. The snows will have melted and the skies cleared. KimThinOne's days are numbered.

Getting closer: Direct 3-way chai-biskoot US-NoKo-SoKo. Does this sound more and more like United Korea vs. Colonialist Yankeestan?

Or has NoKo been thrown to the wolves by Cheen-Russia? or is it the erstwhile bullies having to come to Little NoKo on their knees with the two big Bros looking on with folded arms?
Likely outcomes:
Case 1: NoKo uses the relaxed security posture of SoKo and US to invade. Fait accompli with Seoul taken over. SoKo surrenders inside 2 hours. Cheen and Roos demand Ceasefire, and send fleets of bombers over Sea of Japan, and fighters over NoKo to make their point. Trump Tower at the edge of Seoul mainland/ Incheon Causeway spared.
Trump takes finger off WW3 button.

Case 2: NoKo-SoKo hammer out a Reunification Agreement with massive US aid promised to kick up NoKo economy. Special trade tariff relaxation for SoKo to make up for temporary economic downturn. (What do PRC and Russia do in this scenario?)

Case 3: NoKo-SoKo hammer out a Reunification Agreement and tell the US to (**** ***). Cheen and Roos and all Oirope applaud and guarantee security of new state with nuclear umbrella. Seoul renamed Kim Il Sung City. US given 30 days to leave the peninsula. (What does US do in this scenario?)

Case 4: (most likely): Talks go nowhere except that all sides are pretty drunk by Day 5, and Agree to (hic!) Meet Again (hic!) in 6 months. NoKo mijjile development races ahead.
