Meeting led by PoodleCanada is framed as "nations that came to the help of South Korea when NoKo invaded" back in 1950.

But Tillerson's words are a major comedown. The condition for stepping back from military option is now "say that they want to come to talks" rather than "stop and roll back nuclear weapon development". Walked into the trap, hasn't he? OF COURSE NoKo would love to "say they want to talk" as the submarine-based nukes are loaded.

Washington: A former CIA officer suspected by investigators of helping China dismantle US spying operations and identify informants has been arrested. The collapse of the spy network was one of the US government's worst intelligence failures in recent years.
The arrest of the former officer, Jerry Chun Shing Lee, 53, capped an intense FBI inquiry that began in around 2012, two years after the CIA began losing its informants in China. Investigators confronted an enduring mystery: how did the names of so many CIA sources, among the agency's most dearly held secrets, end up in Chinese hands?
Some i..believed that a mole inside the CIA was exposing its roster.. Others thought the Chinese government had hacked the CIA's covert communications...Still other former intelligence officials have also argued that the spy network might have been crippled by a combination of both, as well as sloppy tradecraft by agency officers in China. The counterintelligence investigation into how the Chinese managed to hunt down US agents was a source of friction between the CIA and FBI.
..left the CIA in 2007, ..in Hong Kong and working for a well-known auction house. Apprehended at Kennedy Airport on Monday and charged in federal court with the unlawful retention of national defense information.
Had previously travelled to the US in 2012 to live with his family in Virginia. {this is one brave dude, hain?} It was during that trip that FBI agents searched his luggage during hotel stays in Hawaii and Virginia and found two small books with handwritten notes that contained classified information. He later made his way back to Hong Kong after being questioned by FBI agents in 2013.
Only a matter of time before the surrender is signed in Honolulu and DC.

Kimono-Shiver Moon's doing a Tughlak: forcing "unified" teams for Olympics events with 3 weeks to go.

South Korea women's hockey coach Sarah Murray speaks to reporters at Incheon International Airport, Tuesday / Yonhap

South Korea women's hockey head coach Sarah Murray said Tuesday her players will suffer "damage" if North Korean players are added to the team for next month's PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

Murray made the remarks after returning home from the team's U.S. training camp in the wake of the South Korean government's proposal to form a single Korean team at the Olympics.

Both Sports Minister Do Jong-hwan and Prime Miniter Lee Nak-yon have gone on record as saying adding a few North Korean players to South Korea's current 23-player roster will not affect homegrown athletes because hockey is played in short shifts and players all get turns taking the ice.

But their stance overlooks the fact that the Olympic roster is set at 22 and at least some players, either South Korean or North Korean, will likely have to sit out as healthy scratches.

"I think there is damage to our players," Murray told reporters at Incheon International Airport. "It's hard because the players have earned their spots and they think they deserve to go to the Olympics. Then you have people being added later. It definitely affects our players."

South Korea made the joint team proposal at high-level inter-Korean talks last Tuesday, during which North Korea offered to send an athletic delegation to the PyeongChang Olympics. The two sides will further discuss the hockey team issue and other matters at a working-level meeting Wednesday.

South Korea's proposal for a single Korean squad wasn't made public until Friday. And Murray, daughter of former National Hockey League head coach Andy Murray, said she only found out Sunday that this was happening, and she didn't actually hear anything directly from the sports ministry or other government sources. She got calls from her national team staff and also from reporters at NBC in the U.S. and CBC in Canada.

"I am kind of shocked this happened so close to the Olympics," Murray added. The PyeongChang Games start on Feb. 9 and South Korea's first game is the very next day against Switzerland.

"When rumors were going around about this happening, I didn't really believe it. And it's getting more and more serious now," she added.

Seoul's push for the joint team has met with some backlash from a public that understands South Korean players may be robbed of a chance to play in what could well be their first and last Olympics. South Korea, ranked 22nd, is making its Olympic debut as a host nation, and despite recent progress, is not yet good enough to qualify for Olympics on merit.

Murray's team is an eclectic group of overachievers with chips on their shoulders and budding teenagers who have already been through some big moments on ice. Their overcoming of adversity on and off the ice has been well documented, and collectively the women's hockey players have attained the status of sentimental favorites at the Olympics.

Murray said her players are now faced with another challenge and they should try to clear the latest hurdle.

"We (coaches) talk to them a lot about mental toughness. And this is a great test of mental toughness," she said. "Worrying about what you can control ... because things that are out of your control are distractions. We can't control this situation so we just have to worry about what we can control and make sure we do our best, so that after the Olympics, we don't have any regrets and use this as an excuse as to why we didn't perform our best."

Do, the sports minister, first broached the possibility of a joint hockey team last June, but the idea didn't seem to last long, with critics questioning its feasibility. Murray admitted that once such talk was finished last summer, she didn't think the matter would be raised again.

"The players said in June not to make them a political statement and that they just want to play the game. I agreed with them," the Canadian said. "We've been working so hard. This is another distraction and we have to worry about things we can control. We can't control this situation. We just have to work on doing what we do best. And just play our game."

If the unified team is put together, Murray said her biggest concern would be "team chemistry."

"Adding somebody so close to the Olympics is a little bit dangerous just for team chemistry because the girls have been together for so long," she said. "Teaching systems and different things ... I'd have about a month to teach these (new) players the way our team plays. That makes me a little nervous."
South Korean officials have said they're seeking to keep the South Korean roster of 23 and add extra North Korean players and that they've asked the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) for cooperation. According to these officials, the IOC and the IIHF are also seeking understanding from other participating nations because a roster expansion granted to only one team would create an uneven playing field.
Murray said she felt other countries may understand the situation and see it as a "political statement."
"They (may) understand that North and South Korea coming together through sports is a great story," she said. "I just wish it would have happened earlier."
And no matter how many North Koreans are added, Murray said no one will be guaranteed ice time.
"I hope that I am not being pressured to play (North Koreans)," she said. "I am hoping we can just play the way we play and not have the influence of, 'I need to play this player.' I just want the best players to play. If you play your best, then you earn your ice time. Whether you're South Korean or North Korean, they have to earn their place." (Yonhap)

Nations at North Korea meeting commit to considering more sanctions
<snip>
A 20 nation meeting on North Korea agreed on Tuesday to consider imposing unilateral sanctions on Pyongyang that go beyond those required by U.N. Security Council resolutions...
...
The Vancouver meeting also committed to ensuring that sanctions already in place were fully implemented.

And then, a naval blockade?

Kimono-shivering Moon-Chamberlain's bright idea starts unraveling.
“North Korea was all about firing missiles last year, but suddenly they want to come to the South for the Olympics? Who gets to decide that?,” Kim Joo-hee, a 24-year-old translator told Reuters during a coffee break on a chilly Seoul afternoon. “Does North Korea have so much privilege to do whatever they want?” Moon’s office declined to comment beyond saying the two countries would be coordinating logistics for the Olympics, which begin on February 9. Opinion polls released since the plans became public have shown limited support for some of Seoul’s proposals. Only four out of 10 respondents said they favor the plan to march together under a flag symbolizing a unified Korea, according to a survey released on Thursday by the South Korean pollster Realmeter. Tens of thousands of people took to social media to vent their disgust after plans for the joint activities were announced on Wednesday, with one commenter saying the Korean peninsula flag is “not my goddamned flag”. Others complained “the Pyeongchang Olympics have already become the Pyongyang Olympics”.
Meanwhile from the victorious capital of the great People's Democratic Republic:
(CNN)The Winter Olympics opening ceremony may not be the only parade North Korea is planning on participating in next month.
Invitations sent to diplomats and satellite imagery suggest Pyongyang is preparing for a major military parade on the eve of the Pyeongchang games, which begin February 9 and will feature North Korean athletes and cheering squads.
A copy of what appears to be a letter sent from North Korean authorities to defense attaches, seen by CNN, invites them and their spouses "to attend festival functions held in Pyongyang" to mark the 70th anniversary of the formal creation of the Korean People's Army (KPA) on February 8.
Diplomatic sources in Pyongyang told CNN that defense attaches with relations to North Korea had received invitations to the event.
On the one hand I feel that Moon's ploy is brilliant. Per the famous article that laid out strategy a decade ago, the best policy for the US/SoKo is to announce all-out support for ReUnification. Chinas has the most to lose from Korean Reunification that leaves SoKo the powerful and dominant partner. If NoKo ppl actually see/hear some snatches of conversation and see scenes from SoKO, that is **NOT** good news for Kim Thin 1.

But right now this is 1936 with a twist: NoKo is trying to use the event as a victory celebration for the regime. Does this mean they are ready for serious denuke discussion and actual reunification on SoKo terms? HA!!

All sides are cynically buying time. SoKo-Moon wants his Olympics to go off without war panic upsetting the tourism.
NoKo wants to develop and LAUNCH the sub-based leg of the deterrent, US is stocking up on ammo and bring enough delivery platforms to the neighborhood to permit a conventional "Shock&Awe" campaign to succeed without BOG (boots on ground). Naval blockade would be a prelude to all-out strikes - or the feint to make ppl sit and wait for the blockade to start, as the B-2s are coming in for the pre-emptive strike. Several ships have been positioned from Australia and Singapore to converge fast, each delivering a fully-equipped Marine Battalion, aircraft and all. Plus the more visible 3 aircraft carrier groups.
Somewhere I read that the B-1 can deliver more conventional bomb payload than a B-52, but **NOT** deliver nukes. Huh?

Kim Thin 1 :rotfl:
North Korean state media has issued a release mocking the US for having "nuclear-phobia" after several coincidental news stories has US citizens fearing a North Korean attack.

"Nuclear-phobia by the nuclear force of the DPRK has now caused a tragicomedy in the U.S.," a state-run outlet published, using the acronym for North Korea's formal name.

The article cites the recent errant ballistic missile alert in Hawaii as causing "great disarray" and "chaos." Likewise, a meteor that lit up the skies over Ohio and Michigan made people "greatly worried" that they were under nuclear attack, the article claims.

So touching.

Reminds me of The Sound of Music
North Korea had said that its advance team Saturday would be headed by Hyon Song-wol, a singer who leads the Moranbong Band, said to be a favorite of the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Under Mr. Kim’s rule, the band has enlivened the North’s propaganda-heavy pop music scene, sporting short skirts and performing American pop standards like “My Way” and the “Rocky” theme song. Ms. Hyon herself has received outsized media attention in South Korea, where some news outlets have speculated — with no apparent evidence — that she was once Mr. Kim’s girlfriend, a theory dismissed by North Korea analysts in the South. Mr. Kim’s wife, Ri Sol-ju, is herself a former member of a pop band.

North Korean Invasion takes South By Storm
South Korea's voracious media followed her every move Sunday, with tiny details about her facial expressions and fashion style making headlines. Hyon's attire - from her shoes to an expensive-looking fur - drew intense debate, with one fashion analyst likening her style to the US first lady. "I think she was trying to emulate the style of Melania Trump ... and trying to showcase the image of being rich by wearing the fur," Heo Euna, head of Korea Image Strategy Institute, told Yonhap news agency.

Global Association of Lungi Shiverers (GALS) moves the Doomsday Clock by 30 seconds: now 2 minutes to DooD.

Generally this is a bunch of political lungi-shiverers, but this time....
....“grim assessment” of the state of geopolitical affairs. “As of today,” Bulletin president Rachel Bronson told reporters, “it is two minutes to midnight.” In moving the clock 30 seconds closer to the hour of the apocalypse, the group cited “the failure of President Trump and other world leaders to deal with looming threats of nuclear war and climate change.” The organization — whose board includes 15 Nobel Laureates — now believes “the world is not only more dangerous now than it was a year ago; it is as threatening as it has been since World War II,” Bulletin officials Lawrence M. Krauss and Robert Rosner wrote in an op-ed published Thursday by The Washington Post. “In fact, the Doomsday Clock is as close to midnight today as it was in 1953, when Cold War fears perhaps reached their highest levels.” Krauss, a theoretical physicist, and Rosner, an astrophysicist, added: “To call the world nuclear situation dire is to understate the danger — and its immediacy. North Korea’s nuclear weapons program appeared to make remarkable progress in 2017, increasing risks for itself, other countries in the region and the United States.”
P.S. Stock market is rising.

OK, so much for that. Its politics as usual.
“Never before has the Bulletin decided to advance the clock largely because of the statements of a single person. But when that person is the new president of the United States, his words matter.”
These oiseules don't care one bit that China and NoKo are accumulating a nuclear arsenal to take over all of East Asia.

BTW, there was an interview with retd. US Jarnail McPeak that I saw somewhere. He gave a few numbers that basically show that the NoKo artillery all their GPS coordinates written on bums or mijjiles, so the Seoul lungi-shivering is (probably) unwarranted. But the interview deteriorated in predictable directions, and when it got to the part where McPeak was arguing for surrender to the Chinese, I got too nauseated and am not posting here.

Now that retail indicator, Dow, is up 567 yak herder can wipe off part of the sweat on the forehead. On a separate note, serious investors should use S&P instead of Dow, but that is not important. Over the next few days we may see the seesaw again, hope you bought some. There can be many reasons for the "WHY", but the reason you posted a markets related news in the Korea dhaga, suggests that the markets may have sent the stocks down sensing problem in the Koreas. It is possible, including reasons such as Gov shutdown, higher interest rates, DT's tweets etc. etc. Chances are that some very influential people with lots of money, knowing how a rule based sell orders works when markets start going down, may have forced it further down and then decided to cash in (sell high, buy low). What are the odds of Korean games ending without a geopolitical event?

All thoughts that induced a sell back circa late November. Not sure the slide is over yet, market went up the day after first crash in 1929, IIRC as Smart Buyers rushed in, and then that momentum died...
Look at it this way:
1. 3 a/c groups.
2. Several USMC troop ships each carrying a fully equipped battalion of Marines..
3. some number of F35s, F22s, B1s, B2s, B52s in Guam and SoKo.
4. Array of anti-BM destroyers, cruisers etc.
5. Russia building refugee camps
6. China building refugee camps
7. CIA saying in public that NoKo is "months away from directly threatening US"
8. POTUS has painted himself nicely into a corner saying "Talks have always ended badly", "past POTUSes were stupid to be complacent", and "I WON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE".

What other outcome can there be? Eleven doing a backdown by de-nuking NoKo? That would be the end of their SCS adventure, unless US if forced into a trade: SCS for denuked NoKo. But DT would be hammered when that comes out, and rightly so.

Since 1770s, is there any example if US meekly backing down and calling troops home crowing about Biss & Luv without firing a shot in anger?

No he wouldn't. This is a post-factual White House (and Congress). The story would be that DT had successfully cowed the North Koreans into denuclearizing, tyrants take our military seriously, America is great again, etc. Period. No one would even mention that Eleven was part of any deal, let alone investigate what he got in return.

Nobody fact-checks Trump Sour Car on even the most glaringly falsified representations of domestic issues. Joe Six-Pack has no idea what a "nine-dashed line" is and couldn't care less who is splashing around on what side of it as long as everything at Walmart remains cheap. The ONLY people who would know enough to discover that China has been given carte blanche over the SCS: Clintonista Wilsonian/Globalist Foreign Policy commentators, who would say nothing to contradict the White House story because they have all been paid off by China anyway. North Korea sends clear message and it is ... :P

So Wednesday drop was small, but still a drop. Net climb-back is only about half of the drop of last thursday-Friday. Has the buy-back momentum ended and is it going to be swept away in tidal wave of selling this thursday-Fridan? I think war drums are beating.

RD unfortunately does lay it out clearly: a huge Eleven win in SCS would not be noticed/admitted by anyone who does not have Security Clearance and is hence muzzled. Either they are too stupid to realize, or they are too smart to open their mouths. So yes, a trade as in nook-nood noko, in exchange for free rein of the SCS, seems the agreed solution/ sellout. 100% cheen victory. It is Op Parakram again: the terrorist proxy's nukes are taken away by King Uncle Han.

I think if that happens, it is clearly the start of the slide of the American Empire and Dubya's Noo Whirled Odor. The Rise of Han.

UB saar, something does not add up here (apologies, slow day for me). Per above few posts, Han's strategy of using de-nook card to receive carte blanche in SCS looks appears a smart move. But for uncle to get to this point, where it is somehow forced to trade (i.e. receive the guarantee of nook-free NK in exchange for SCS), does not make sense. Uncle has been in that area for decades, given there physical presence and dozens of eyes in the sky. They could have prevented both, given amount of resources they have and time they have been around, thus not be in a position in which they would be force to trade something. Very simplistic assumptions, unless in BO's time both developments were knowingly ignored. What am I missing?

No one wants to actually take on the Dlagon, maybe? They say, nah! let next guy /gal deal with this, nothing gonna happen in my term. This is what DT is complaining about: that now it is time to face up to the truth that cheen has installed nuke ICBMs on Pacific coast, directly threatening the homeland via proxy while keeping their own separate deterrence. So this is a really new situation. All the fears about "if we let them have a reactor they will produce Pu" have now been surpassed by the reality: They HAVE Pu and much worse, they have tritium too plus the delivery vehicles. Can't pretend any more.

Will Han deliver on an SCS-denook deal, or renege once SCS defenses are up to full strength? What is the record?
Then again, US could just ignore the SCS regime? We know that any "denuking" of NoKo is only like moving the Crown Jewels of Gola up the Karakoram Hwy: it can be reversed any time.

Or maybe US figures they can live with Han as the #1 supelpowel and US as imagined kings of the Western Hemisphere. No choice.

But I **DO NOT*** think DT can back down and leave NoKo nuke-armed and happy with ICBMs. It's just not in historical character. I think both Han and Young One are gambling perilously close to the red lines. The definition of a trigger for war in the WHOTUS/Pentagon is "Clear and Present Danger", per Tom Clancy. I think that test has been met, and the answer is that there has to be war.

Is this exquisite diplomacy or what?
The high-level delegation from North Korea flew over the western sea toward rival South Korea in a private plane owned by Kim Young One. The white jet landed on the runway of Incheon International Airport, and was shortly moved to a separate mooring, according to Korean news outlet KyungHyang Sinmun. Kim Yo Jong walked out of the plane, officially becoming the first person from the Kim Dynasty to step on South Korean lands since the end of the Korean War in 1953. Broadcasters displayed the three-hour journey of the North’s high-level delegation from their arrival in the airport to the Jinbu train station near Pyeongchang.
Came in style to Seoul airport like the Future Viceroy Of Running Dog Province, not through the tunnels under the DMZ.

Look at the expressions. Wonder if they have dynamic versions like the Buckin/ Bronco at the bars in Dallas/ Ft. Worth.
