After Germany now Japan has decided to rearm aggressively.
Japan exploring counter-strike option sends ripples in China
Amidst public sparring between US and China over Taiwan at the Shangri La dialogue, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida stole the strategic limelight with his comment about Japan reinforcing its military capabilities in the next five years including counter-strike option.

Since the word counterstrike is part of nuclear parlance, it has sent ripples all over China as long pacifist Japan wakes up to the threat from Communist China in East Asia. Kishida’s defence minister Nobuo Kishi also lambasted Japan’s nuclear neighbours for possessing and developing nuclear weapons and flouting rules. The statements from Japanese leadership were in recognition of the threat faced by China-Russia joint military exercises using nuclear bombers in East China Sea on May 24, the day QUAD summit was taking place in Tokyo.
While the global hotspots of concern were discussed at the dialogue, the key focus remained Taiwan and its fall-out on the Indo-Pacific in case of an Chinese instigated military emergency. Japan PM warned that Ukraine was East Asia of tomorrow, his defence minister identified China as a nation of concern. This clearly indicates the domestic debate over long practiced pacificist policy of Japan was getting hotter by the day, forcing the leadership to take military measures to counter it.

India and Germany are close, but Russia’s invasion is creating problems
John Dobson, June 11, 2022

India will be Germany’s special guest at the important G7 summit it is hosting at Schloss Elmau in the Bavarian Alps from 26-28 June.
London: India and Germany’s diplomatic relations date back more than seven decades. In fact, India was one of the first countries in 1951 to grant the Federal Republic of Germany diplomatic recognition following the Second World War. Today, the two countries are linked by a strategic partnership, a key pillar of which is their shared interest in strengthening multilateral cooperation and promoting stability and security in the Indo-Pacific region. Germany is India’s most important trading partner and in 2020, over 1,700 German companies provided more than 400,000 jobs in India. Last month, Germany agreed to ten billion euros in funding for joint projects with India, particularly those covering clean energy to tackle climate change. But Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is casting shadows on the relationship between India and Germany, with the two leaders far apart on their positions to the war.
Ukraine is also creating problems within Germany itself. The war has thrust Germany’s establishment into the throes of a tortured process of introspection, self-doubt and recrimination. In many ways, this is not surprising as for the past 70 years Germany has become steeped in a culture of pacifism, driven by guilt of the Nazi atrocities during the Second World War. Germany’s armed forces are currently small and woefully ill-equipped and many senior politicians have even been fighting for decades in favour of total disarmament. At last, Vladimir Putin’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine has convinced Germans to take security seriously and in March its coalition cabinet agreed to a boost in the country’s defence spending from around 1.5% of GDP, to 2%, the level NATO members are supposed to meet but Germany has consistently missed. Just as significant was the decision two days after the start of the war to allow the export of German weapons to Ukraine, a move previously forbidden.
But Chancellor Schulz and his coalition partners have been dithering, with some commentators concluding that his rhetorical gymnastics indicate that he might even fear a Ukrainian victory. Reports last week in Germany’s largest and most popular tabloid, Bild, claimed that Scholz has steadfastly refused to say that he wants Ukraine to “win” the war, uttering only that it should “survive” and that Russia must not “win”. This has led many to believe that Scholz is playing a double game, as he and his party to this day remain heavily invested in the bilateral relationship with Russia, arguably the most important strategic relationship in post-war Europe. Some even accuse Scholz of working behind the scenes to frustrate economic sanctions and weapons deliveries. Others claim that it was Germany’s self-serving Russia policy and its self-inflicted and naïve energy dependence, eagerly supported across Germany’s political spectrum, which even emboldened the Kremlin and enabled Putin’s war in the first place.
Many of these charges may seem unfair on Scholz, as he tries to balance conflicting interests within his coalition. Numerous members of his own Social Democratic Party do not support the huge rearmament that is central to the new foreign and security policy outlined in his Zeitenwende (“historic turning point”), made three days after the Russian invasion began. As a result, the SDP is slowing down the implementation of his new policies and it is the fear of alienating his members even further that Scholz has been so reluctant to say clearly that Germany is now supplying light and heavy weapons to Ukraine because it wants Ukraine to win the war. But as Russia steps up its offensive in Donbas, Ukraine is begging for heavy weapons.
.....
The embattled Chancellor Scholz sees Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a valued partner in efforts to isolate Russia, and wants European defence companies to offer New Delhi an alternative to Russian weapons deliveries as a way to reduce its reliance on Moscow.

EAM has it right when he said Europe thinks that its problem is the world's problem but world's problem is not its problem.
They just gave Ukraine more than 40 billion USD worth of aid to counter Russia. What exactly are they trying to put on platter for India? Nothing!
I think after Trump and Biden countries have started to realize that US is no longer the strategic partner they can rely upon. After getting the whole world into expensive and repeated mess, USA does not have the vote of confidence from anyone.

Merkel coming from East Germany and growing up with authoritarian rulers categorized Modiji in that mold despite him being elected. And started distancing Germany from a rising India.
Now that she is gone Scholz is trying to restore ties.

Isn't that strange? Authoritarian didn't stop Merkel from getting in bed with Xi... Germany is highly mercantile, and will go to the biggest market to sell its wares without scruples. I didn't see Germany under Merkel really "distancing" - they simply had less attention and effort to spare for India compared to other priorities. As India grows, that attitude will change.

BTW, Scholz comes from an illustrious family.

On June 10, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida pledged to increase defense spending from 1% of the country's GDP to 2% over the next five years. The increase is outlined in the 2023 economic and fiscal policy guidelines that Kishida’s cabinet adopted on June 7, and comes after a May 27 meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden in which Kishida promised to "substantially increase" Japan's defense budget

That list includes the new F-35 Lightning multi-role jets that were belatedly announced earlier this month; heavy transport helicopters; air defence systems in cooperation with France and Spain; and a new main battle tank which is being developed in cooperation with France.

And how much would all that cost, to fulfil the existing wish list, without even getting started on any extra items?

"The list is long, and it almost perfectly covers €100 billion," says Dr Major.

Ramanaji,
East Germany was a special case. While in the West, there was an official de-Nazification, that restricted the members of the NSDAP in many areas. However it was incomplete and a lip service to a degree. But the important thing is that existed and reluctantly accepted. In the East it never happened at all. The official position was that the East Germany was a victim of the Nazis. This is similar to the claim of Pakistan being a victim of terrorism. Due to a shortage of personnel, they were forced to employ a huge number of known Nazis. These Nazis, who could never leave DDR, as they would be in trouble if they moved to the West, stayed put and worked in the system. In time, they occupied important posts and remained Nazis in their attitudes. The wall came up after 1961, and migration to the West stopped to a large extent. The general population, who could watch West German tv, and see the affluence of that society, hated the guest workers, who had a standard of living far above the East German. The East Germans that I have spoken to were all envious of the guest workers, and had desires of having the same standard of living. The East had a homogenous German population (there were some guest workers from Vietnam and Cuba, but this was negligible in number) that historically encouraged racism. Then there was the reporting system, where everyone was reporting everyone to the authorities. Spying was common and acceptable in society.
This environment encourages the hatred of the different and someone of color. However polite they may have been on his face, I am sure that someone like Modiji would not have been liked by someone like Fr. Merkel, with the baggage that she carries. But you have to give due credit to the Germans. Whatever be their private feelings towards colored foreigners, they also know that their prosperity depends on their exports. So, when the need arises, they can be friendly and engaging and be able to hide their inner feelings.
Gautam
PS let me just add, I was trained in West Berlin by a gentleman who was trained to be a pilot. As the war was going terribly, he was posted to an anti-aircraft gun unit, when Berlin surrendered. He told me that he had joined the NSDAP, as that was the only way for him to be successful in life and propaganda convinced him that Germany was going to win. He had a very high membership number, meaning that he was a recent member, a normal thing for a young man or a teenager. But after the war, he wanted to be a lawyer. During the de-Nazification process, he was told that law as a career was not open to ex-Nazis.

I want to bring to attention of BRF ites the enormous strategic importance of the upcoming Great Nicobar transhipment port ., once completed this humungous port would drastically reduce the relevance of major ports like Colombo and Chittagong. , and rival Singapore and Jebel Ali in its sheer size and capacity. Big congrats to Modi Govt for the perseverance. 8)

And.. the port is just the beginning .,

a free trade zone has been birthed as a branch to strengthen India’s status, economy, trade and tourism. The primary push for this project has been the vision to turn Andaman & Nicobar Islands into an economic hub, strengthening India’s presence in the Andaman Sea and the Southeast Asian region through the establishment of a major cargo transshipment center. This comes true on paper due to the location of the Great Nicobar Island which is just north of the main east-west shipping route that links East Asian exports with the Indian Ocean, Suez Canal and Europe.

The fruition of this plan brings into focus the ripples this development will create which include elevated participation of India in the global shipping trade, creation of a myriad of employment opportunities for citizens and improvement of quality of life for current and future residents of Great Nicobar Island.

The said projects outlays the development plan and demarcates 75 square kms for urbanized area, 33 square kms for residential area and 42 square kms for commercial development, and enlists under it, four major development projects including an International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) under Category 7 (e), a Greenfield International Airport under Category 7(a), a Power Plant under Category 1(d) and Township under category 8(b), which together form the core of the main components of the holistic master plan.

A trans-shipment hub at Great Nicobar could create a huge economy in itself. The island alone is larger in size than Singapore and Dubai combined with a coastline of over 900 kilometres. And it is situated at the junction of world’s oil and merchandise trade. More than 40 percent of the entire world’s trade passes through this region.

A FTZ could mean a tourist destination as well.. something along the lines of Macau would mean the tourism potential is immense., also to point the Andamans is a hidden gem , very few have really gone there to appreciate it

India, Israel, US, UAE are I2U2, summit next month
US President Joe Biden will host a virtual summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Israel Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan during his visit to West Asia from July 13 to 16.

A senior US administration official told reporters in a background call Tuesday that the new grouping will be called “I2U2” — “I” for India and Israel and “U” for the US and UAE.
The India-Israel-US-UAE grouping, which met for the first time under a new framework in October 2021, dealt with issues concerning maritime security, infrastructure, digital infrastructure and transport. At that time, Ahmed Albanna, Ambassador of UAE to India, had referred to the new grouping as the ‘West Asian Quad’.

Looks like the US wants to keep India very close... they have realised such multilateral dialogues happen a lot better when India participates, because we come prepared, come with good ideas, generate trust between participants and are focused on desirable outcomes for all concerned.

After the debrief on the recent QUAD summit in Tokyo by our EAM, it was clear that so many areas of concrete engagement, 7 pillars and actions were defined, I didn't see US driving all these topics with such focus before and realised it must be India driving a good part of it. The anti-thesis of chai-biskoot if you will.

Foreign policy and International relations have always been a forte of this Govt.

Far-right sends shockwaves in France after electoral breakthrough
PARIS (Reuters) - France's far-right scored a historic success in legislative elections on Sunday increasing its number of lawmakers almost tenfold and cementing the party's rise from fringe status to the mainstream opposition.

Since taking the helm of the party in 2011, leader Marine Le Pen has sought to rid the National Front - now called the National Rally (RN) - of the anti-Semitic image it acquired under the nearly 40-year leadership of her father, ex-paratrooper Jean-Marie Le Pen.

Securing 42% in April's presidential election, Le Pen had already tapped into the general disenchantment with President Emmanuel Macron and identifying anger across the country over the rising cost of living and the decline of many rural communities.

It's not a clear thinking yes vote for fringe parties or extreme left, but a no confidence vote for liberal democratic centrist parties including Macron's LERM. French people see them as having betrayed the working classes and having dismantled the "ascenceur social" - social ladder altogether by letting income disparity get so extreme that the working class can no longer hope to get closer to the well heeled classes in any meaningful way. The taxation (direct + indirect) is such that it impacts working classes a lot more than the rich, so even assets and institutions for the common good like education, health care, retirement pensions etc. are largely paid for by the working classes. Who in doing so have more precarious jobs, less savings and are struggling to create assets like a house compared to a couple of decades ago.
This angst has always been there in France and is a defining feature of French politics. Macron's party is seen as singularity responsible for making it worse hence the assembly election results.

Compared to this, foreign policy, EU power grab, Ukraine etc are distant second considerations.

If inflation takes off the working class has no fat to burn. And when they link galloping energy prices and inflation to the Ukraine policy of EU and France - this is something Macron will try hard to prevent - then the French support for this war will buckle.

That tipping point is not far away hence Macron's recent advice to Kiev to negotiate.

I suspect people of most EU countries, even UK will think on similar lines.

Well., one just need to monitor the "propaganda thermometer" [ (c) brf ] in mainstream news in these countries especially the UK to understand the "pulse" of the ruling party

I have a different take on the topic of Korean reunification.

I believe that a united Korea will spend the next 30 years bringing the north at its level of social and economic development. Removing the United Korea as a geopolitical player in the eastern Asia.

During and after the period of consolidation Korea will be taking a more neutral position WRT, PRC. As they have existed for centuries as a border nation to PRC and have maintained independence from PRC.

Ultimately it's not in US interests for Korea to unite.

Maybe @suraj San can give better insights but we have been waiting for Japan to leave there pacifism for the past 15 yrs or so . I think what ever they do now will be too little too late.
The Japanese don't need to build a huge military. They can make do with a 6 carrier battle group Navy. Grow airforce by 50% and they will have sufficient forces in conjunction with the USN to defend the home Islands. The will with such a force also have the ability to seriously interfere with any PRC plans to invade Taiwan.

India to Resist Anti-US Messaging at BRICS Summit With Xi, Putin
India is expected to push back against an anticipated effort by Chinese President Xi Jinping to use this year’s BRICS summit as a platform to highlight his efforts to build an alternative to the US-led global order, Indian officials with knowledge of the matter said.
China wants more members because she wants to dilute India's influence within BRICS.

Russia wants more members just to show off to the West that they lost.

India is doing her balancing dance: QUAD: not China centric, invites Russia to participate in Indo-Pacific, etc, BRICS: not US centric, etc.

All three know the world is going through a re-order and are jockeying for position, while weakening the other.

Nearly 1,20,000 march in Georgia 'for Europe' after blow to EU bid
At least 1,20,000 Georgians took to the streets Monday in support of the country's EU membership bid, after the European Commission recommended deferring Tbilisi's candidacy. Waving Georgian, Ukrainian, and EU flags, demonstrators flooded on Monday evening the main throughfare of the Georgian capital Tbilisi.

In what was the biggest demonstration in decades, at least 120,000 people took part in the "March for Europe" in Tbilisi, according to an AFP estimate based on video footage shot from drones.

Many held placards that read "We are Europe" as the EU anthem, the Ode to Joy, was performed at the demonstration.

The rally was initiated by the Black Sea nation's leading pro-democracy groups and supported by all of the opposition parties to "demonstrate the commitment of the Georgian people to its European choice and Western values".
Georgia's bid for membership of both the EU and NATO -- enshrined in the country's constitution -- has long angered the Kremlin and tensions culminated in Russia's invasion of Georgia in 2008.

On Friday, the European Commission recommended that the European Council grant candidate status to Kyiv and Chisinau, but said it will "come back (by the end of 2022) and assess how Georgia meets the number of conditions before granting its candidate status". The Commission also recommended granting Georgia "the European perspective," something its chief Ursula von der Leyen called a "huge step forward" on Georgia's path toward membership.

"The door is wide open," she said, adding: "The sooner you deliver, the sooner there will be progress."

On Monday the EU chief specified that Georgia needs to implement more reforms before it can join the bloc.

Russia's foreign ministry posted a clip of Lavrov's opening remarks during a meeting with Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi in which he said Moscow was adapting to what he called the West's aggressive policies.
