A senior police officer and five others were killed as terrorists dressed in army uniform stormed a police station in Punjab's Gurdaspur district and were locked in an intense gunbattle with security forces on Monday. India tightened security on its border with Pakistan after the attack.

Punjab police's superintendent of police (detective) Baljit Singh died in the gunbattle with the terrorists, IG Gaurav Yadav said.

Union home minister Rajnath Singh said he had spoken to the head of the Border Security Force and "instructed him to step up the vigil on India-Pakistan border". An alert was sounded in the Parliament complex after the Gurdaspur attack. Security was tightened at the North Block after the terror incident.

The terrorists struck a moving bus in Dinanagar at 5.30am, spraying bullets at passengers, injuring four. The assailants then targeted a health centre followed by a building where the families of police personnel reside and hurled grenades before entering the police station.

The army was mobilised as the 'fidayeen' militants were holed up in Dinanagar police station complex. Special forces, too, were deployed and a gunbattle was on several hours after the attack began.

At least six people have been killed by a group of terrorists in Gurdaspur in Punjab near the border with Pakistan. The terrorists are currently in an empty police station and are exchanging fire with security forces. This is how the attackers struck, according to latest information from sources:

Around 5.30 am, the four armed terrorists, wearing army uniforms, tried to grab a tempo on a major highway near the bus stand in Dinanagar.
The tempo driver managed to escape, said sources.
A roadside food stall owner was reportedly killed in the firing.
The terrorists then opened fire on a bus heading towards the state capital of Chandigarh; six passengers were injured.
The terrorists shot next at a white Maruti 800; the driver was injured; the attackers left in his car
They stopped at the police station in Dinanagar and opened fire. Two cops were killed.
In the exchange of fire with security forces, three patients at a hospital next door were shot, according to sources.
The terrorists are now holed up in a part of the police station and are continuing to exchange fire with security forces.

This is EXACTLY reason they choose the timing. It is imperative to be unpredictable and use the element of surprise. The response must be swift and decisive. One battery will be enough.

true. but then while one battery will suffice, it will require back up. mobilization a la parakram. strike corps in MP is immobilized due to heavy rains in Malwa. monsoon ops in arabian sea which is turbulent is risky.

response will have to be disproportionate and massive. and I do not mean just salvo of one battery. I trust modi here. let us see..

"Neutralized" means rendered harmless, doesn't necessarily mean killed.

5.05 pm: The officials say that the attack was carried out by a team of the Lashkar-e-Taiba. The fact that the infiltration into India happened through the Hiranagar area points towards the Lashkar.

But then Sitaram Yechuri and his polit bureau would be ready with a demand to treat them with all due respect, give them a guard of honour and send them back to Pakistan. The Hindu would immediately line up a row of 'eminent citizens'.

Even if caught it's of no use for the Indian nation. Only public's money get wasted in trials for many years. If it's to show to the world that it's Pakistan, even the world knows it nowadays. Will that lead to any change in foreign policy of any countries that back Pakistan. Never. Recently Amrikhan announced payment to the backpakis. Staunchly supports these Jihadis in Afghanistan. Cheen is behind them to get the most out of backpakis. For India, we know our enemies, their location. Their strength and everything. Only thing lacking is the will to destroy them and to regain what we have lost over many centuries. We are on our own and we must be doing what's in India's best interest to destroy Pakistan.

More accurately, one person has been found alive -- might have been a hostage.

(The writer is a former General Officer Commanding of the Srinagar-based 15 Corps and now associated with the Vivekananda International Foundation and the Delhi Policy Group)
By striking in Gurdaspur, the Pakistan nexus is attempting three things. First, expanding the arc of militancy/terror to draw in the army; it has successfully done so in the Jammu to Pathankot sector. Greater the deployment of the Indian army in CI duties, less its availability for training and more the fatigue on its men.

Secondly, the entry of terror in Punjab forces the expansion of the gaze of Indian intelligence agencies, thereby diluting their focus on J&K. Thirdly, it is the psychological messaging which must not be missed. The nexus is attempting to convey our vulnerability and its strength, its ability to pick and choose its targets.
