I like Obama. So far, he didn't start a direct war in Syria(or any other country in middle-east or North-Africa) or Ukraine. I don't like his drone and surveillance regime.

the drone and surveillance regime is run by the deep-state SD/cia/pentagon as a continuous policy regardless of who is POTUS.

GW2 could no more change it (if he wanted to), than Obama or hillary or trump...it doesnt matter...

Yep, there seems to be many powerful lobbies. Some of these lobbies might have wanted american boots in middle-east or north-africa. So far, Obama has resisted them.

boots on ground ==> massive logisitics contracts which feed the big boys, who subcontract it to smaller local players while 'managing' the whole thing and making very high margin profits . food, oil, spares, depots, shipping...tail stretching back to procurement in europe and usa. and then flaws can be found in equipment and next-gen eqpt and upgrades push through congress "to keep our boys safe"

its a virtuous cycle that lifts all boats ;)

likewise pervasive domestic & foreign surveillance surely has massive black budgets to staff it, develop tools, fund ideas...an empire all by itself outside of much scrutiny into spending practices. some of the satellites cost hundreds of million of $$ - each.

UN poised to approve 'all necessary measures' against Isil in Syria
Members of the United Nations Security Council observe a minute of silence for the victims of Paris terror attacks.
By Harriet Alexander, New York

12:11AM GMT 20 Nov 2015

The United Nations is poised to approve a French proposal which authorises “combat by all means” against the Islamic State.

Members of the Security Council are on Friday expected to vote on the French text, which was rapidly drafted and circulated to all members of the council. Until now the UN has not been asked to vote on military action, because America, France and Britain knew that Russia would veto any text.

“We think everyone is on side now,” one diplomat told The Telegraph. “We don’t expect the Russians to veto it.”

The text states that the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isil) “constitutes a global and unprecedented threat to international peace and security.”

It says that the Security Council is “determined to combat by all means this unprecedented threat to international peace and security.”

“We all know the threat. The threat is still here. So this is our political responsibility, as the Security Council, to have this text adopted,” said François Delattre, France’s ambassador to the UN.

France’s communique calls on “member states that have the capacity to do so to take all necessary measures - in compliance with international law, on the territory under the control of Isil - to redouble and coordinate their efforts to prevent and suppress terrorist acts.”

It also urges member states to “intensify their efforts to stem the flow of foreign terrorist fighters to Iraq and Syria and to prevent and suppress the financing of terrorism.”

The French draft resolution does not provide any legal basis for military action and does not invoke chapter seven of the UN charter that authorises the use of force.

French diplomats maintain, however, that it will provide important international political support to the anti-IS campaign that has been ramped up since the attacks in Paris on Friday that left 129 dead.

Previous Security Council votes which made any mention of President Bashar al-Assad’s future have been vetoed. In March the Security Council did, however, approve a resolution condemning chemical weapons, and other resolutions dealing with humanitarian issues have been approved.

But the dramatic French move, announced on Thursday and unexpected even 24 hours previously, is seen as an attempt to forge global unity in the wake of the Paris attacks.

Western diplomats said the UN was preparing to act on four different issues regarding Syria: a counter-terrorism resolution; a cease-fire plan; deploying UN monitors; and an authorisation for military action against Islamic State.

"There is momentum building with the international community on Syria. On the ground, not much has changed,” said one member of the Security Council.

Russia had called a closed-door Security Council meeting on Wednesday to discuss terrorism and present its own resolution, a surprise move which a Western diplomat told The Wall Street Journal was Russia’s attempt “to set the narrative” as it got wind of France’s proposal. The French ambassador said he had spoken to his Russian counterpart before the meeting.

It was unclear whether the two resolutions - Russian and French - would both be approved, one agreed, or merged.

Matthew Rycroft, the British ambassador to the UN, said the Russian measure "seeks to legitimise the authority of Assad" and added that it did "not have much prospect."

Vitaly Churkin, Russia's ambassador to the UN, indicated that he did not have any objections to the French text, and suggested that the Russian measure could be adopted at a later time.

Mr Churkin recalled that after the September 11 attacks, there was a first resolution adopted quickly, followed by a broader one, and said "it may well be that we will go down that road again."

President Francois Hollande will meet Vladimir Putin and Barack Obama next week to discuss the next steps. David Cameron is pressing to expand Britain’s contribution beyond air strikes in Iraq. He wants to begin air strikes in Syria, and has said he would like to seek Commons approval but only if he is confident of success.

Diplomatic sources in the UN say that a Security Council resolution, while helpful for Mr Cameron’s cause, would not alter the legality of strikes. Britain does not believe that Security Council approval is necessary to increase involvement in Syria. :rotfl:

Like someone said, looks like ISIS/BokoHaram/Caliphate has decided to show its power and its mijjiles. What next? Sierra Leone lollipop kindergartners vs. British Marines? Boko Haram in Kenya?

Ulan I am afraid my intuition points to a dirty bomb attack in some major capital :( hope it doesnt come to that.
the concept is that no matter how well armed and prepared the CT units are there are no terrorists to take down and no clear way to control the panic and financial crash. its impact will be far more than a paris style hit.

ISIS is confirmed to have ex-SF members from france and who knows how many nations. such people can 'deliver' these high value attacks.

the fundamental issue here - between daesh and al qaeda and other assorted nut jobs is follows - all believe in the ultimate glory of khalifat but first

1. al qaeda want to first destroy the far enemy (christians) before sorting the near enemy (manafiq arabs)
2. daesh want to first destroy the near enemy and set up the khilafat before tackling the far enemy (although that is now mixed up)

Turkey seizes 11 million pills of 'Syria war drug': Reports

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/worl ... 860478.cms
The Turkish authorities have seized close to the Syrian border a record haul of almost 11 million pills of the synthetic stimulant drug captagon which is believed to play a crucial part in Syria's civil war, reports said today.

It has been repeatedly dubbed as the drug fuelling Syria's civil war since its production provides income for the warring factions and also keeps fighters awake and energised over long periods.

Large quantities of the drug are also illegally smuggled abroad, with Saudi Arabia a major market where the authorities repeatedly report seizures.

Captagon is classified by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime as an "amphetamine type stimulant" and usually blends amphetamine, caffeine and other substances.
Lebanese authorities this month charged a Saudi prince and nine others with drug trafficking, after nearly two tonnes of captagon capsules and cocaine were found waiting to be loaded onto their private plane at Beirut airport.

Over the past four days, Russian air forces have conducted 522 sorties, deploying more than 100 cruise missiles and 1,400 tons of bombs of various types, the minister stated.

On November 17, a diesel-electric submarine, known as the Rostov-on-Don, launched cruise missiles against ISIL targets near the Syrian city of Raqqa, the unofficial capital of the caliphate, Russia's RBC news agency reported, citing an anonymous source close to the Ministry of Defense.

Iran says Assad can run for presidency in Syria's future election

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2015- ... 834837.htm

TEHRAN, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Syria's President Bashar al-Assad has the right to run in any future elections in the country, a senior Iranian Foreign Ministry official said on Thursday.

"Any qualified person, including (Syrian President) Bashar al-Assad, is entitled to stand as a candidate in any final political process in Syria," Press TV quoted Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Iran's deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs, as saying.

The Syrian people's vote will be the last decision over Syria's future, Amir-Abdollahian said.

As for the results of the latest round of talks over the future of Syria in Vienna on Nov. 14, he said that any timetable for the political settlement of the Syrian conflict could be put into practice only if a ceasefire goes into effect there.

He said that political process in Syria "will get nowhere" if there is no "serious and effective" fight against terrorism.

^ I had already predicted the ISIS would relocate south, into Iraq and a tractless quad junction of jordan, KSA, iraq and syria south of palmyra. .. perhaps lie low in the sinai.

in iraq they are holding hostage lakhs of people in qaim, haditha, falluja and ramadi and will make their last stand there, with perhaps heavy casualties among innocents. indiscriminate bombing or starving out is not possible there.

sticking around in a small town like deir ezzor with miles of open desert around will just get them flattened real quick. the rafales, flankers, fullback and backfires will have a field day feasting on them. its much less defensible than raqqa.

one more attack beaten off by the 'lions' of deir azzor . I think in another 3 weeks, their long siege will finally be over....
---

The Syrian armed forces have thwarted the terrorists’ attempt to seize a military airfield in Syria’s northeastern Deir-az-Zor province, killing 25 attackers and wounding many others, Russian media reported Friday.

“The airfield’s defenders beat back the attack coming from eastern, northeastern and southeastern directions, killing 25 of them,” a military source told RIA Novosti news agency.

“A series of airstrikes by the Syrian air force helped the army to repel the enemy attack and then counterattack, seizing several villages outside the airbase,” the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Most of the Deir-az-Zor province remains under the terrorists’ control and the local airbase is the government forces’ main stronghold there.

The militants make regular attempts to storm the base using explosives-laden trucks and armor.

The latest such attack in September lasted for 15 hours, but the Syrian garrison, backed by aviation, has successfully been repelling all enemy attacks and driving out the ISIL fighters holed up in the nearby villages.

Two CNN reporters were suspended for making political comments about US House vote rejecting (or making it difficult) for refugee entry into US:

one got suspended for this:

tu stein ‏@thestustein 21h21 hours ago

other got suspended for this:

House passes bill that could limit Syrian refugees. Statue of Liberty bows head in anguish

Justification for suspension was the below:
“If you publicly declare your preference for issues or candidates or one side or the other of the public policy issues CNN reports on, then your ability to be viewed as objective is compromised,” he said.

While we recognize this as a shitty attempt to restore credibility of US media that is in gutter, we should apply this yardstick to CNN-IBN and other US funded or sympathetic to US channels in India and get wholesale channels shutdown for few weeks for each offense.

UN authorising action in Syria. This is not good. Russia has to be very carful before voting yes. West has misused this many times in past. Russia alone was doing good job. Now west will come. they will have their own zones of action and US and Uk will try their best to not to hit ISIS (as in past). Russia has to read every line carefully before any vote.

NYT OpEd:

Saudi Arabia, an ISIS That Has Made It

Black Daesh, white Daesh. The former slits throats, kills, stones, cuts off hands, destroys humanity’s common heritage and despises archaeology, women and non-Muslims. The latter is better dressed and neater but does the same things. The Islamic State; Saudi Arabia. In its struggle against terrorism, the West wages war on one, but shakes hands with the other. This is a mechanism of denial, and denial has a price: preserving the famous strategic alliance with Saudi Arabia at the risk of forgetting that the kingdom also relies on an alliance with a religious clergy that produces, legitimizes, spreads, preaches and defends Wahhabism, the ultra-puritanical form of Islam that Daesh feeds on.
