Omar pitches for Indo-Pak. Truth & Reconciliation Commission on J&K - Peerzada Ashiq, The Hindu
Welcoming the joint investigation of India and Pakistan into the Pathankot attack, National Conference working president Omar Abdullah on Tuesday pitched for an Indo-Pak Truth and Reconciliation Commission to look into the cases of rights abuses in the past 26 years.

“It’s a welcome step that Pakistani and Indian security agencies are jointly investigating the Pathankot attack. I believe the time has come for the two countries to set up Truth and Reconciliation Commission to look into the cases of the past 26 years,” said the former Chief Minister during a party function in Srinagar.

NC president Farooq Abdullah asked New Delhi and Islamabad “to actively work towards opening additional trade and travel routes along the Line of Control”.

“Time has come to open the Jammu-Sialkot route for travel and trade. The Kargil-Skardu route should be thrown open and efforts should be made to open every possible route along the Line of Control to connect people on the two sides.

“Similarly New Delhi and Islamabad should encourage people to travel to each other’s countries and experience the commonalities in culture and philosophy and the universal bonds of brotherhood,” he added.

Dr. Abdullah said there was no alternative to Indo-Pak friendship and cooperation.

Describing terrorism as “a universal enemy”, Dr. Abdullah said, “There could be no possible distinction between acts and ideologies of terror and violence. What happened in Lahore is heart-rending and painful. Time has come when we realise we need to be united in fighting violence and terror and safeguard the future of our coming generations.”
Omar Abdullah reinforces my strong belief that Kashmiris (irrespective of religion) are a confused lot, do not know what they want, fence-sitters and are of doubtful loyalty. What is there to reconcile between India and Pakistan on J&K except for Pakistan to vacate the occupied lands? Doesn't Omar believe that Pakistan invaded in October 1947, unleashed jihadi terror of the worst kind and occupied these lands? Doesn't he know that Gilgit-Baltistan was surreptitiously taken over by Pakistan with the collusion of the British? Doesn't he know that 1947-48 and 1965 wars were unleashed by Pakistan to take over J&K? Doesn't he know that there is a farcical politics playing in the POK without any real power for the occupied people in ruling themselves? Doesn't he know the huge demographical change in POK including GB reshaping the very characteristic of these areas?

Is this not equating the aggressor with the aggrieved? Something like, you bring grain, I bring chaff and the two of us make food? Why is Omar talking about 'rights abuses' and not terrorism, especially cross-border terrorism and its supporters within J&K, why only 26 years when jihad had continued unabated since October 1947?

Pakistan is a 'very, very vital problem': Donald Trump

WASHINGTON: A nuclear-armed Pakistan is a "very, very vital problem", Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump has said and asserted that the country needs to "get a hold of" its situation.

"Pakistan is a very, very vital problem and really vital country for us because they have a thing called nuclear weapons. They have to get a hold of their situation," Trump told CNN during a town hall in Wisconsin, where the Republican presidential primary is scheduled for April 5.

"When I see that and when I see it put in a park because it was mostly Christians, although many others were killed other than Christians, I think it's just absolutely a horrible story," he said referring to the terrorist attack in Lahore on Easter Sunday that claimed 74 lives and injured over 300 others.

"I'm talking about radical Islamic terrorism. I will solve it far better than anybody else running," Trump said in response to a question.

A large number of people were present at the crowded Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park of Allama Iqbal Town in Lahore when a powerful blast took place on Sunday. A large number of Christian families were present in the park due to Easter Sunday.

"I think you have to stay in Afghanistan for a while, because of the fact that you are right next to Pakistan, which has nuclear weapons and we have to protect that. Nuclear weapons change the game," he said.

Last year, Trump had called Pakistan the most dangerous country in the world. In an interview, he had indicated that Pakistan needs to be denuclearize.

Russia shows what happens when terrorists' families are targeted
Donald Trump, the leading Republican presidential candidate, was widely condemned when he called for the United States to "take out the families" of terrorists
It is the signature, though officially unacknowledged, policy behind Moscow's counterinsurgency and counterterrorism strategies, and Russia's actions in smashing a Muslim separatist rebellion in the Caucasus provide a laboratory for testing Trump's ideas
Relatives were used as "hooks" to lure in militants. If the militant did not switch sides, the family member disappeared. Chechnya had about 3,000 to 5,000 unresolved disappearances from 2000 to 2005 or so. The policy, executed by the Chechen leader, Ramzan A. Kadyrov, the scion of a prominent Chechen family that itself switched sides, broke the organized resistance.

Pakistan gets half of expected foreign economic aid
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan could receive only half of the $9.2 billion annual estimated foreign economic assistance during the last eight months largely because of less-than-anticipated inflows from China and the World Bank.

Disbursements by China were less than one-fifth of the annual estimate of $3.1 billion due to delay in finalisation of financing agreements for infrastructure projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

From July through February, the government received $4.6 billion in foreign economic assistance, of which almost 90% was in the shape of loans, according to the Economic Affairs Division. The receipts were half of the annual estimate of $9.2 billion.

ISPR denies links between army chief and Malik Riaz, Reuters withdraws story
Lt-Gen Asim Bajwa, Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), on Wednesday refuted allegations which appeared in a Reuters interview on March 29 titled “Pakistani property tycoon eyes media move to protect his name”.
The Reuters interview had misquoted Malik Riaz’s ties with Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif.
Bajwa said that he, “categorically rebuts such uncalled for and unfounded allegation” on the army chief.
The military's spokesperson asserted that the army chief has no relationship or acquaintance with Malik Riaz.
“Reuters has also withdrawn its story due to same incorrect comment,” added Bajwa.
A Reuters advisory, which was earlier issued, stated, "The story included a quote attributed to Malik Riaz Hussain about his relationship with Pakistan's army chief, General Raheel Sharif, that was incorrect. There will be no replacement story."
Everyone in Pakiland knows that the whole country is for sale,(including the COAS !) if the price is right, so I don't blame Reuters for publishing this story  Also, by the way, the Ex COAS, the chain smoking, hard-liner General has corruption charges alleged against him because of his, and his brother's cozy relationship with Malik Riaz

partha, thanks for that url to this Q&A session.

I had to tolerate for nearly 2 hours Ramachandra Guha's 'liberalism' and his idea of 'historicity'.

Somethings that were said by A.S.Dulat confirmed my views.

New Delhi sees everything in black & white while Kashmir's favourite colour is grey (sitting on the fence).

Kashmiris are a heavily layered people. It is not out of character for a Kashmiri leader to be in touch with India or Pakistan or both at some point of time. It is not easy to decipher the Kashmiri psyche or even to win the Kashmiri confidence. Centuries of foreign rule from Mughals to Afghans to the Sikhs to the Dogras and the Indians have made them natural agents.

Ramachandra Guha turns it around to say that centuries of conquest exploitation, oppression have made them wary and even secretive.

Both the above views, by Dulat and Guha, are bogus and humbug, to say the least. We are all layered but we don't behave like the Kashmiris.

Dulat quotes Prof. Ghani Bhatt (pro-Pakistani separatist) who said that Kashmiris were like snakes (descendants of Naga Sadhus) and if left alone he/she won't harm you, but if disturbed, they would attack. Kashmiris may bow down and adapt himself/herself but cannot be defeated. It is Dulat's opinion that they are not bad people but needs patience.

Well, we have had almost seventy years of patience and tonnes and tonnes of money, effort, and goodwill spent on them with absolutely no returns. These bogus ideas must be buried once and for all.

Dulat went to the extent of saying that the Pundits left in panic and were not pushed out. At least, Ramachandra Guha conceded that there was a 'pogrom' (and not a genocide as one lady questioner put it) in Kashmir and 'liberal intellectuals like him' (another self-patting after calling himself repeatedly as 'historian of modern India') missed it in the milieu of persecution against Muslims then ongoing in North & West India at that time.

I am appalled.

More claims likely in ‘RAW spy’ case - The Hindu
“The effort would be to create three global impressions — one, that India is actively involved in creating unrest within Pakistan, especially in Balochistan; two, that he was working towards targeting Chinese in Gwadar port; three, India is using Iran as a base for such operations, {exactly as we have discussed here}” a senior official said. “We can expect a series of videos and claims which will lead right up to the top,” another senior official said, pointing out that Pakistan had never had such a senior Indian officer in its custody. “The propaganda value is immense,” he said.

NIA corners Pakistan with names of 4 Pathankot terrorists

NEW DELHI: In the biggest breakthrough so far in the Pathankot probe, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has nailed the identity of the four fidayeen who struck at the IAF airbase on January 2, and their two Pakistan-based Jaish handlers.

The slain terrorists' names, accessed exclusively by TOI, are Nasir Hussain, Hafiz Abu Bakar, Umar Farooq and Abdul Qayum and they were residents of Vehari (Punjab), Gujranwala (Punjab), Sanghar (Sindh) and Sukkur (Sindh) districts of Pakistan, respectively.

The names and addresses of the terrorists, whose bodies were recovered from the encounter site, and their handlers were shared by the NIA with the Pakistani joint investigation team (JIT) on Wednesday. "We have asked them to confirm these and get back to us," NIA DG Sharad Kumar said.

The identity and origins of those behind the attack were worked out by NIA sleuths through laborious investigations over the past three months. The NIA was tight-lipped on how these details were cracked, with Kumar only attributing it to "a thorough, professional and transparent investigation by the agency". "The identities (worked out by the NIA) are confirmed," he insisted. The NIA had recently released photos of the four terrorists on its website, inviting the public to identify them.

The Jaish-e-Muhammed handlers identified by the NIA are Kashif Jan, resident of Tehsil Dusra in Charsadda district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Shahid Latif, resident of More Aminabad in Gujaranwala. Latif is incharge of Jaish operations in Manday ki Dett, Sialkot, and is responsible for launching cadres into India.

Interestingly, Latif had visited Kashmir earlier and served more than 10 years in an Indian jail before being deported to Pakistan via Wagah. According to Sharad Kumar, the JIT informed the NIA Kashif was missing ever since his name surfaced in the probe.

The pinpointed results of the NIA's probe have ruled out any scope for deniability on Islamabad's part about the Pathankot attack conspiracy having been hatched on its soil and its execution by Pakistani fidayeen, duly facilitated by Pakistani handlers.

With reciprocity the basis for allowing the JIT's probe on Indian soil, the NIA hopes to travel to Pakistan soon to take forward its investigation. NIA sleuths will seek access to Maulana Masood Azhar and his brother Rauf in Pakistan.

The NIA, during discussions with the JIT in New Delhi on Wednesday, sought voice samples of Azhar, Rauf, Latif and Kashif. The agency also asked Pakistan to provide DNA/voice samples of Khayyam Baber, mother of fidayeen Nasir who made calls to her from Pathankot.

The NIA gave the JIT names and addresses of four suspects based in Pakistan, and asked it to conduct raids on the premises of Al-Rehmat Trust, the operational financing body of JeM.

Iran slams Pak media for 'undignified rumours' on Indian spy arrest
ISLAMABAD: The Iranian Embassy in Islamabad on Thursday slammed “certain elements in Pakistan” for spreading “undignified and offensive” remarks, which it said were attributed to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, regarding the arrest of Indian spy Kulbhushan Jhadav.

“Elements unhappy over promotion of ties between the two Islamic countries of Iran and Pakistan are trying in various ways, including the spreading of undignified and sometimes offensive contents, to fade out the significant achievements during the visit of President Rouhani to Pakistan,” embassy spokesman Abbas Badrifar said.

The spokesman's statement comes just days after Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav's arrest was announced on March 25, while Rouhani was visiting Islamabad.

The spreading of such news items, said Badrifar, without clarifying what news report he was referring to, is the product of thinking which does not like further expansion of ties between the two countries and is against fruitful materialisation of agreements made during the visit of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

But Badrifar said such tactics “will not impact the positive views of the two countries regarding each other.”

He said since independence, Pakistan had always proven itself a “trusted partner and neighbour”, adding that the “western borders of Pakistan have never been threatened”.

“Iran considers its borders with Pakistan those of peace and friendship,” the spokesman said.

Pakistan asks Tehran to investigate, share details of Indian spy's time in Iran - DAWN
Pakistan, in a letter addressed to Ambassador Mehdi Honardoost of the Iranian Embassy in Islamabad asks Iran to:

Immediately arrest and hand over an individual identified as Rakesh, alias Rizwan, for interrogation
Verify activities of Jadhav as stated above, along with records of visits to Iran
Provide a record of his stay in Iran including cities visited and the duration of these visits
Provide a record of people interacted with and purpose of these interactions
Share details of RAW networks on Iranian soil
Share any other details related to the above

"Jadhav was covertly based in Chabahar, Iran, under the pretext of being a jeweller/businessman. He was assisted by RAW Sub Inspector Rakesh, alias Rizwan, a key operative who was also working undercover as a businessman dealing in jewellery." the letter said.

RajeshA-ji, maybe OT, but my two-paisa input on the above:

1. I also admire Trump for his candidness and "political uncorrectness" . And he knows the problem of I.T. ( Islamic Terrorism)
2. Unfortunately one of his solutions is predicated on "US allies should be made to share their burden of Massa's status as policeman of the world". This may not work, as countries like Japan, S.Korea, Germany, upto now, have had a "free ride" on defence matters but may be reluctant to defray the defence burden of US
3. In an ideal world, economic power should also translate to military power as well
4. Everyone "knows" that US economic power is on the decline, but it is sheer military muscle that is keeping it # 1
5. So, US cannot afford to reduce its defence budget; something like a catch 22 situation !

Pakistan launches international offensive over arrest of Indian ‘spy’ - ToI
Pakistan on Thursday said it has informed the European Union and major world capitals about the arrest of an Indian "spy" from restive Balochistan province and asked Iran to provide details of his "spy network".

Kulbhushan Yadav, the alleged chief operative of Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) was arrested by Pakistani security agencies last week from Chaman near Quetta.

Speaking at his weekly news briefing, foreign office spokesperson Nafees Zakaria said major world capitals and EU have been informed about the arrest of a serving Indian Navy officer for planning "subversive activities" in Pakistan, Radio Pakistan reported.

The entire world has seen the admission statement of the Indian agent, Zakaria said, referring to the so-called "confessional video" of Yadav released earlier this week by the Pakistani army.

Zakaria further said that Pakistan had earlier provided the United Nations with evidences of Indian interference and terror activities in Pakistan.

India has acknowledged Yadav as a retired Indian Navy officer, but denied the allegation that he was in any way connected to the government.

"The said individual has no link with government since his premature retirement from Indian Navy," said a statement issued by India's ministry of external affairs, while demanding counselor access to him.

Meanwhile, Zakaria confirmed that Indian high commission here has sought counselor access to the arrested person.

"A request by India for consular access (to Yadav) is under consideration," he said in response to a question.

Zakaria said that Pakistan has also asked Iran to provide details about the network of Yadav who was reportedly arrested after he entered from Iran.

In the video, Yadav has said that he arrived in Iran in 2003 and started a small business in Chahbahar. {This reference to Chahbahar is clearly to target India's involvement with the Chahbahar port}

The foreign office spokesperson said that Iran has assured Pakistan that it would never allow anyone to use its soil against Pakistan.

Paki Editorial Pleads For A Mature Approach In The Spy Affair
It was an astonishing news conference in every way. With protesters gathered outside parliament, controversy over counter-terrorism operations in Punjab raging and a joint investigation team in India to probe the Pathankot air base attack, ISPR chief Lt Gen Asim Bajwa and Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid held a joint media briefing to discuss the anti-Pakistan activities of captured Indian spy Kul Bhushan Jadhav.
The editor is hinting that Paki priorities are all wrong
While questions remain about the exact nature of Mr Jadhav’s activities in Balochistan and the circumstances of his arrest, it is obvious that India has a great deal to answer for.
So, the paper is not completely "buying" the Pakistani version of the events !
Perhaps what is most impressive is that the capture of an Indian national by Pakistan has not led to a meltdown in relations altogether. Had Mr Jadhav been captured a year ago, it is more than likely that the already tense bilateral relationship would have plummeted to yet another low.
But on Monday, neither Lt Gen Bajwa nor Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid tried to whip up a frenzy. Instead, both men spoke in calm, measured tones and the thrust of the news conference was to ask India to cease its anti-Pakistan activities.
On the spy issue, the state here must resist any pressure to turn it into a Raymond Davis-type fiasco. Instead of a public trial leading to all manner of nationalist and anti-Indian sentiment being unleashed, the fate of Mr Jadhav and the broader issue of spying between Pakistan and India should be worked out between the two states.
IMO, public sentiment will indeed be roused of India's so-called interference in Baluchistan and Karachi and in each international fora, the fact of his "capture" will be trumpeted as "proof" !
If at the height of the Cold War, the US and the Soviet Union were able to manage the issue of spies captured, surely there is a way for Pakistan and India to do the same.
You are talking of two rational players, which is obviously not the case in this situation !
Also, Paki public memory is short ; no less that two major students of IT ( Islamic Terrorism )- Malauna Masood Azhar and Omar Saeed Sheikh -were caught red handed and lodged in Indian jails.
And Pakistan resorted to "terrorism and hijacking" to free them to carry on their "IT" duties . One is presently in jail for killing Daniel Pearl (and master minding 911); the other is responsible for the Pathankot Base Attack !

From what I gather from Trump's statements, his intentions are somewhat on the lines of

1. He is the only mainstream politician in the West, who is openly saying that there is a war, and the problem lies in Islam and Muslims itself, rather than on artificial categories like "Islamic fanatics", and so on. So he has been very forthright in pointing out the new enemy as clearly as possible, without becoming overly abusive.

2. The left in these Western/Atlantic surrogates thinks that they are being anti-American, however the whole time, they are being controlled by USA-UK, through Fabian socialism and media control. It was intended by USA-UK to have a strong anti-militant movement in these countries - Germany, Japan, South Korea. This gave the USA-UK the freedom to increase their military might while these surrogates provided the money, but explained away their unwillingness to be militarized on their pacifism. Trump is promising to take away that leash, so that the inherent militantism in these countries can again emerge without much of a backlash from USA-UK axis. In fact, he is encouraging it. It is a new model, of giving the allies more responsibility and ability to tackle the likes of China and its surrogates like North Korea, and even Pakistan.

3. Trump is very much aware of the dire straits in which American economy is, and so he is hoping on bonds of past alliance, that allies like Germany, Japan and South Korea can themselves play a more active role in security matters, allowing USA to focus on strengthening its military in hardware matters rather than exhausting the military in foreign deployments.

4. USA plans on remaining no. 1, but in a "peacetime formation". Trump wants NATO to become a completely New Anti-Terrorism Organization.

Basically Trump is planning on neutralizing China by letting Japan and South Korea go nuclear and sit back, and planning on neutralizing Islamic Jihad using tough anti-immigration policies against Muslims, and preemptive pursuit of Jihadists around the world. Trump has mentioned he would let India take care of Pakistan. Our problem till date has been American tendency to prop up Pakistan for various reasons, including in containing India. With Trump that systematic thinking could change and increase our leeway.

So AFAIAC, Trump is the man to have in Washington D.C.

He will definitely make Pakistanis feel very very unwelcome in USA.

It is OT here but Mr T claim he wants to re-build both economic and military power. US will go back to war economy which will result in new technological breakthroughs.

US, India discuss Pakistan and the Pink Flamingo scenario

WASHINGTON: The United States and India have begun conversations about Pakistan's runaway nuclear weapons program, including its development and deployment of battlefield tactical nuclear weapons, in the backdrop of the nuclear security summit that opens here on Thursday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected in the US capital on Thursday morning, but ahead of his arrival, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and his US counterparts and other senior American interlocutors have been discussing the progress in India's ties with Pakistan, including complications arising from the patronage of terrorist groups by sections of the Pakistani establishment, and its nuclear posture.

The Pakistani headache featuring in talks with Doval was revealed by US Secretary of State John Kerry, when he referred cryptically to Washington having "serious questions" about "some choices" being made in the region that "may accelerate possible arms construction."

"We've raised them with various partners in the region. So our hope is that this Nuclear Security Summit will contribute to everybody's understanding about our global responsibilities and choices,'' Kerry said, without directly naming Pakistan.

There was little doubt Kerry's remarks were directed at Pakistan, which has bailed out of the summit citing the terrorist attack in Lahore, one of dozens in the country over the past decade that has not persuaded its establishment to jettison a policy of fostering extremist groups.

''India has a very important role to play with respect to responsible stewardship of nuclear weapons and nuclear materials. India has a long record of being a leader, of being responsible, and it is particularly important right now at a time when we see in the region some choices being made that may accelerate possible arms construction, which we have serious questions about,'' Kerry, with Doval beside him, said in a vote-of-confidence in New Delhi.

Earlier, President Obama telephoned Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to condole the death of more than 70 persons n the Lahore bombing, while also "expressing his understanding of Sharif's decision to cancel his visit to the United States and remain in Pakistan following this terrorist attack," according to the White House.

''This callous and appalling attack against innocent civilians, many of them women and children, underscores the critical danger that terrorism poses inside Pakistan, throughout the region, and around the globe,'' a White House readout of the call quoted Obama as saying.

Pakistan has sent a low-level representation to the summit, evidently apprehensive about having to explain its decision to build tactical battlefield nuclear weapons in a situation where its home grown terrorists and mutinous extremist military personnel have attacked several military installations in the country, including the army headquarters and navy and air force bases.

The possibility of a nuclear conflagration between India and Pakistan had been dubbed a ''pink flamingo'' scenario, from a term coined by security analyst Frank Hoffman to describe events that are predictable and fully visible, but almost entirely ignored by policymakers (as opposed to Black Swans, which are unpredictable and unforeseen).

Evidently, THIS pink flamingo is not something that will remain unnoticed or unaddressed.

The choice of Doval to play Sherpa to the Prime Ministerial visit rather than external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj suggests the New Delhi and Washington are developing a deep security relationship in addition to extensive military and diplomatic ties. Enigmatic comments and cryptic statements bear this out without shedding too much light on the depth of the engagement.

For instance, following Doval's meeting with US national security advisor Susan Rice, NSC spokesman Ned Price said the two sides discussed US-India counterterrorism cooperation, ''including against Lashkar-e-Tayyiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed,'' specifically highlighting the two terrorist groups that have long been fostered by the Pakistani military.

The statement at the end of Doval's meeting with Kerry was less specific, but still mentioned counter-terrorism amid a summit primarily centering on nuclear security.

Musharraf’s name was removed from ECL ‘without court permission’
ISLAMABAD (Staff Report) – A special court hearing a high treason case against former military ruler Pervez Musharraf has remarked how his name was removed from ECL without the court’s permission.
(no need to be surprised here as everyone knows that Supreme or Special Court does not stand a chance against the "writ" of the Paki Fauj  )
The court expressed resentment over absence of Pervez Musharraf from the court and inquired from prosecutor Muhammad Akram Sheikh.
“We will see the accused later. First tell us whether the authorities were unaware of court’s orders. How Musharraf’s name was removed from ECL without the court orders,” the judges said.
“Was it not in the knowledge of the government that the special court had summoned Pervez Musharraf. If the government was unaware of it then why was not the court informed,” they questioned. :rotfl:
The prosecutor replied that the court could cancel the bail and issue arrest warrants. Surety bonds given by guarantor of Musharraf could be confiscated, he said.“The statement of Musharraf can be recorded through video link if court allows this,” he added.
Pathetic statements -by the guardians of justice !!!
The court remarked that the case could not move ahead further in the absence of the accused.
The court sought written reply from Musharraf and his guarantor, Rashid Qureshi. (ex fauji, and mouthpiece when Mushy was in power? )
The court further remarked that Musharraf’s guarantor should present the former president in the court or his surety bonds would be confiscated.
It seems that the case is now destined to die a natural death

Four Killed In Lakki Marwat Blast
PESHAWAR - At least four people were killed and one injured in a blast in Lakki Marwat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Thursday.
The incident took place in the Kot Kashmir area of the district in a vehicle of internally-displaced persons (IDPs).
Police officials said five tribesmen, believed to be IDPs were on board when the explosion occurred. Four of them succumbed to their injuries on the spot while one was seriously injured.
Collateral damage in the name of "fighting terrorism"; no wonder, that the Paki Govt is shying away from conducting a national census

Iran criticises ‘undignified’ remarks on arrest of RAW agent
ISLAMABAD: Iran on Thursday criticized elements in Pakistan for spreading undignified and offensive remarks attributed to President Hassan Rouhani regarding arrest of RAW agent.
Abbas Badrifar, a spokesman for Iran’s Embassy in Islamabad, said spreading of such remarks and news items were product of thinking which does not like further expansion of ties between the two countries.
“Elements unhappy over promotion of ties between the two Islamic countries of Iran and Pakistan are trying in various ways, including the spreading of undignified and sometimes offensive contents, to fade out the significant achievements during the visit of President Rouhani to Pakistan,” he said.
“Iran wants a stable Pakistan. Iran has never felt danger from Pakistan at its border,” the spokesman said.
Badrifarfurther said such tactics would not impact the positive views of the two countries regarding each other.”
Pakistan has written a letter to Iran and sought Tehran’s assistance to help investigate the activities of Indian spy Kulbhushan Yadav, detained by Pakistani authorities from Balochistan.
According to the letter written by Pakistan’s interior ministry, Islamabad requested (In another report on the same subject, this same newspaper have quoted Pakistan government sources of demanding Iran to arrest and hand over to them accomplices of the so-called arrested spy ; in the light of this fiasco, I would not be surprised if the Pakis abandon their stance of neutrality and tilt more towards their Saudi Abbu!) the Iranian government to help them investigate other RAW network operating in the region.

Pakistan: The Army Steps In
Ahmed Rashid
Posted In Full
The suicide bomber who killed seventy-two people on Easter Sunday in a park in Lahore, Pakistan has drawn condemnation from around the world. Among the killed were twenty-nine children, and another 370 people were wounded, many of them members of the country’s Christian minority. Far less noted, however, has been the attack’s equally devastating effect on relations between Pakistan’s army and civilian government, which threatens to bring further instability to the country’s Punjab heartland.
Reports of such tension have not yet surfaced in the Paki Press, although there were news items criticizing the government of letting Mushy fly the coop
At the heart of the crisis are two men, General Raheel Sharif, commander in chief of the Pakistan army, and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, head of the civilian government. For the past eighteen months, the two Sharifs (no relation) have maintained a tenuous political compact: the army—in some consultation with the prime minister—had overall control of Pakistan’s foreign and nuclear policy, as well as its counterterrorism strategy in Karachi, in the south, and along the border with Afghanistan, in the north. In turn, the civilian government could run the economy, and, most significantly, keep control of the prime minister’s home province of Punjab—the most populous region of the country, which includes the city of Lahore. Counterterrorism actions in Punjab were entrusted to the Punjab police rather than the army.

This compact ended hours after the bomb blast on the night of March 27. Almost immediately, the army declared it had taken control of security in the province, dealing a perhaps fatal blow to the already dwindling political prestige Prime Minister Sharif. The army told the media to emphasize that the orders for the Punjab operation were given directly by General Sharif and not the prime minister.

In fact, the army has no political, constitutional, or legal cover for going into Punjab. That would require the government to invite the army in. But over the past few days, as hundreds of arrests have taken place in Punjab, General Sharif and Nawaz Sharif have not met or apparently conferred with one another, adding to the uncertainty. Ashen-faced government ministers, brought on TV after the bombings, and even the prime minister himself, in his own speech, did not mention that the army had begun an operation in Punjab. For a country at war with extremists it was clear that there was no coordination or even a common strategy.

The result is an acute collapse of relations between the prime minister and the army chief, a dramatic breakdown of what Pakistanis call civil-military relations. In the past, such situations have led to the military imposing martial law on four occasions since 1958. How the current crisis plays out will be critical to the future of counterterrorism policy—and democracy itself—in south and central Asia.

Until this week’s bombing, Prime Minister Sharif had successfully rebuffed attempts by General Sharif to take over security in Punjab, including a direct request to do so in May 2015. But now, the stakes for Punjab have become much higher—for both Sharifs. The army has moved decisively over the past eighteen months to crush the Pakistani Taliban and the multiple Taliban factions that operated in Karachi, in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and in the tribal belt adjacent to Afghanistan. Yet it is Punjab, where there are an estimated sixty Islamic extremist groups and over 20,000 madrassas or religious schools—some of which produce militants and spew extremist ideologies—that has become the central hub of terrorism in Pakistan.

Since the 1980s, many of Pakistan’s extremist groups have been sponsored and trained by the army’s intelligence services to fight for control of Indian Kashmir or, on occasion, to attack other Indian targets. Such support from the military has now mostly ended. But the real test of General Sharif’s determination to root out terrorism from Pakistan has always been in Punjab. Is the army now willing to turn on its former extremist allies and crush them, in what is now a very complex situation?

Several of the most deadly groups in Punjab are now trying to overthrow the state, among them Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, the group behind the Lahore park bombing. Jamaat-ul-Ahrar is openly sectarian and has targeted the army and Christians in particular. But Punjab also hosts dozens of anti-India extremist groups that have been supported by the army in the past. These include the well-trained and heavily-armed Lashkar-e-Tayabba (LT), which was responsible for the 2008 Mumbai attacks and which is listed by the UN and the US as a terrorist group.

Since the September 11 attacks fifteen years ago, LT has been helped by state institutions and the army to evolve into an Islamic charity, although it has been able to sustain its militant wing, even since it carried out the Mumbai attacks. While the army has stopped LT and other groups from launching attacks into India, many LT fighters are now openly fighting in Afghanistan alongside the Taliban or helping extremist groups from Uzbekistan and Tajikstan regain footholds in their homelands.

In light of this activity, the army knows it cannot bring peace to the country or secure its borders and control the cold peace with India until it ends Punjab-based terrorism. It has also come under enormous international pressure for allowing such militancy to flourish; many are especially concerned about the security of Pakistan’s growing nuclear weapons program.

Now that the army has unilaterally taken control of security in Punjab, the crucial question is whether it will be selective in the terrorist groups it decides to go after, or whether it will observe a genuine “no favorites” policy, as General Sharif has long promised. Adding to the challenge, the army itself recruits much of its half-million-strong manpower from Punjab. The generals are getting wary that if Islamic extremists continue to fester in Punjab, their soldiers will also get infected with the bug.

For Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Punjab is equally critical. Since the 1980s, when Sharif and his brother Shahbaz were first hoisted into power by a military regime, and later, when Nawaz Sharif won three general elections, the Sharif brothers have had a political lock on Punjab, where there is also widespread political corruption; Shabahz Sharif is now the chief minister of the province.
Between the two brothers, NS & SS, they seem to run this "artificial entity" like a family business; recent reports in the Paki Press (ISPR inspired ?) have come out with the news (true or not who knows) that the Ramzan Sugar Mills, owned by the Sharif duo, has been importing Indian help to manage the operations of the mill and suggested that many of these Indians, in the wake of one recent arrest, may also be involved in anti-national activities.

But since becoming prime minister for the third time, Nawaz Sharif has frittered away his opportunities. He has proved to be a hopelessly incompetent leader, neither strong enough to initiate badly needed reforms nor sophisticated enough to deal with the country’s well-oiled military machine. Much of day-to-day governance is run by his close family (some of them are members of his cabinet!) rather than by the cabinet, parliament, or other institutions. He has been soft on extremist groups—some of which have close ties to his party, the Pakistan Muslim League—apparently to persuade them not to attack in Punjab. That policy has clearly now failed. Meanwhile the country’s other three provinces, which are controlled by opposition parties, are losing patience with the government’s overwhelming attention to Punjab.

In recent days, tensions between the army and the government have escalated on other fronts, including Pakistan’s recent diplomacy with Iran. Amid the Lahore bombing crisis, the army disclosed that it had caught an Indian spy working to destabilize the province of Balochistan. The spy, Kulbhoshan Yadav, was said to be a retired Indian naval officer, and had lived many years in Iran from where he travelled to Pakistan.

The timing could not have been worse. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani had just been on his first state visit to Pakistan and Nawaz Sharif was negotiating for Iranian oil, gas, and electricity contracts. Asserting his prerogative over foreign policy, General Sharif said that in his meetings with the Iranians he had criticized them for allegedly hosting Indian spies. Meanwhile he announced the capture of the spy. The Iranians left angry (though Rouhani denied the discussions), while the Pakistani prime minister was again shown to be largely powerless.

This may explain some of the reports in the Pakistani Press. Time for India to take advantage

There is enormous uncertainty as to how this will end. “The Lahore park bombing ought to have been a moment of clarity,” the leading Pakistani daily Dawn wrote, in an editorial on March 30. “Yet, in the very moment that the country needed its leaders to demonstrate resolve and unity, an utterly befuddling signal has been sent. Instead of jointly trying to address the challenge… the army and political leaderships appear to have withdrawn into their respective camps.”

Maybe this time around the army will be satisfied with all the powers it has already accrued and will not feel the need for a full-scale military coup. This could mean that the army will do a short, swift crackdown and then withdraw its forces from the province. Whatever happens, the country’s political leadership has been hobbled and the future of democracy in one of south Asia’s most populous states is in serious doubt.

PM’s silence over Indian agent’s arrest is deliberate: Sana
LAHORE: Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan claims that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is silent on the arrest of an Indian agency’s agent from Balochistan under a strategy.
He also declined to confirm arrest of two Indian engineers on sabotage charges from a factory owned by the Sharifs in a Punjab town. /quote]This person, occupying a key post, is also a close relation of Ganja !
Asked about picking up of two Indian engineers by an agency from Ramzan Sugar Mills owned by the Sharifs for their alleged links with subversive activities here, he said absurd and wrong information was being disseminated as no agent or terrorist could have any link with a respectable and law-abiding citizen. When insisted to confirm or deny the report, he said no agency had so far given any report to the effect.
This gives credence to the article by Ahmed Rashid that the faujis are back in the saddle now !
Asked if Jaish-i-Muhammad and Jamaatud Dawa would be allowed to operate in the province under the notion of good and bad Taliban, ...
The coming days and weeks will make it clear whether Ganja and his brother have any say in the running of the country; of course, due to the provisions of the Kerry-Lugar Bill, the army cannot seize direct power !

US, Saudi Arabia join hands to sanction Pakistani entities ahead of PM Modi's visit to Riyadh - Chidanand Rajghatta, ToI
The United States and Saudi Arabia joined hands on Thursday to sanction Pakistani individuals and terrorist entities, including Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), hours ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Riyadh.

In an unprecedented move, the US treasury department announced that Washington and Riyadh jointly taken action to disrupt the fundraising and support networks of al-Qaida, the Taliban, and Lashkar-e-Taiba(LeT) by imposing sanctions on four individuals and two organizations with ties across Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia.

"From terrorizing local populations to exploiting charities and religious institutions, al-Qaida, the Taliban, and Lashkar-e-Taiba have a long history of inflicting violence on Americans and our allies throughout South Asia and the Middle East," said Adam Szubin, acting under secretary for terrorism and financial intelligence. "Today's action marks yet another step in Treasury's efforts to financially cripple terrorist financiers and demonstrates the United States' and Saudi Arabia's shared resolve to target those who support terrorism."

Among the individuals sanctioned are LeT operatives Naveed Qamar, Abdul Aziz Nuristani, and Mohammed Ejaz Safarash, the last of whom the treasury department said bankrolled Zaki-ur Rehman Lakhvi, who India says was one of the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attack planners.

The announcement comes as a huge embarrassment for Pakistan, which is already under the gun for its dodgy nuclear weapons policy that is putting mini-nukes in the hands of field commanders, allowing the possibility of a battlefield heist by terrorists and rogue commanders. Islamabad has sent only a token representation to the ongoing nuclear security summit in Washington, as the civilian government there appears locked in a turf battle with the military establishment that is trying to portray India as fomenting terrorism in Baluchistan.

But the treasury notification unsparingly shines the light on the wide support that terrorists enjoy in Pakistan, including from its business community. In providing details about Naveed Qamar, an influential LeT leader who headed its student wing, periodical departments and also edited its Al Dawa magazine, Washington says in early 2013, Qamar led a group of Pakistani businessmen to an LeT training camp for an orientation program on LeT's operations, after which they donated and pledged support of the group.

"As of early 2011, Qamar organized trips for businessmen to LeT training camps to show how their funds were used. In 2010, Qamar also organized and attended meetings with businessmen from Karachi, Pakistan, in order to collect funds and appeal for donations for LeT militant operations. In that same year, Qamar coordinated funds collected by senior members of Falah-e Insaniat Foundation (FIF) - a US and UN designated Lashkar-affiliated NGO - while organizing logistics and funding for mujahidin attack planning against Indian targets," the treasury department notification reveals.

It now appears that Pakistan may have known of the impending designation while virtually boycotting the nuclear meet, citing the Lahore bombing as an excuse. Modi is scheduled to leave for Riyadh on Friday evening after the nuclear meet, having arrived in Washington after a stopover in Belgium for an India-Europe meet.

Pakistan's song-and-dance about an alleged Indian spy in Balochistan also appears aimed at deflecting attention from the embarrassment of having its patron states call it out on terrorism.

At a Thursday evening dinner meeting ahead of the formal nuclear summit, Modi, seated next to Obama in a gathering of a score of world leaders, invoked the Brussels terrorist attack to call for a new approach to tackling an old scourge while identifying three "contemporary features of terrorism."

"First, today's terrorism uses extreme violence as theatre. Second, we are no longer looking for a man in a cave, but we are hunting for a terrorist in a city with a computer or a smart phone. Third, State actors working with nuclear traffickers and terrorists present the greatest risk," he said.

"The reach and supply chains of terrorism are global; but genuine cooperation between nation states is not," he added.

He made no mention of Pakistan. Didn't need to.

Its only playing to script. But to do an equal equal, although along different trajectories, this whole BS was each side trying to be smarter than the other. For India, in the absence of not being able to punish TSP, wanted to use the investigation to corner TSP to the extent it can (I don't know whom India was trying to impress, but even the hardest of hardest evidence is not enough to corner TSP in the international court of opinion). TSP not to be outsmarted entered into the whole game to show how reasonable it is, but its main objective was to ride over the storm and put India on the dock. They also caught hold of some Indian dude and started screaming RAW spy. So more than equal equal, TSP is now saying, see, India is the bad guy, we have "evidence" against India, but there is no evidence against TSP in Patankot. Only a fool would have not seen this outcome coming.

Guys, what was the Chincom logic given for protecting their TSP munna at the UN, and prevented the resolution from declaring Masood Azhar a terrorist? And that too, when UN itself has declared JEM a terrorist entity?

From the 'Such Gup' section of this week's TFT:

http://www.thefridaytimes.com/tft/such-gup-131/
Tit for tat

Reliable sources say that the recent visit of the Ayatollah to Isloo wasn’t the hunky-dory trip it appeared from the outside. And the reason for that was that the etiquette and decorum normally reserved for an important head of state was said to be missing in this case. We hear the Ayatollah thought he deserved better.

On the other hand, the same sources have revealed that when General Bobby and The Man of Steel visited Teheran earlier, they had to wait for a considerable period prior to their meeting with the Ayatollah, and this fact weighed in when the latter made his return visit to Isloo.

Sadly, this isn’t a case of simple tit-for-tat. The Ayatollahs are miffed with Pakistan for its closeness to Al-King of the Land of Sand. The latter are miffed with Pakistan for their overtures to the Ayatollahs. And we are miffed with the Ayatollahs for refusing to forsake the Lalas.

Pakistani Tablighis pretent to be Ahmadis after getting arrested for extremism in Ghana
Ahmadiyya Mission denies inviting Pakistanis to Ghana
The Ahmadiyya Mission in Ghana has denied knowledge of the presence of some Pakistanis who have been arrested amidst terror fears at Assin Fosu in the Central Region.
The 13 Pakistanis who claim to be Missionaries of the Ahmadiyya Sect are said to have arrived in the country six months ago and have been preaching in some villages across the country.
However, in an interview on the Super Morning Show, General Secretary of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission in Ghana, Ahmed Anderson flatly denied any connection with any group of missionaries who have come from Pakistan to preach Islam.
“This is very very strange, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission is not aware of any group of Pakistanis having come into the country in the name of Ahmadiyya mission to preach.
Prime example of Taqiyya in action !
