US Air Force aids Syrian Army, Russian military liberate Palmyra
By Leith Fadel - 04/03/20170
BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:20 A.M.) – For the first time during this six year long Syrian Conflict, the U.S. and Russian air forces coordinated to aid the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in their quest to liberate Palmyra (Tadmur) from the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist organization.
U.S. warplanes conducted several raids over the eastern countryside of Palmyra these past two weeks, hitting a large number of Islamic State targets along the Sukhanah-Palmyra Road.
These airstrikes by the U.S. Air Force in east Palmyra helped the Syrian Arab Army and Russian military retake the city by cutting off their vital supply route.
Both the Russian and U.S. commands have yet to comment on their coordination above the skies of ancient Palmyra; however, there has been some acknowledgement from local activists on both sides.

Fascinating and quite uplifting to behold. After viewing the US as "the bad guys" (deservedly so) for so long it's almost impossible to believe their deep state would ever allow this kind of cooperation. This is almost historic.Singha wrote:AMN Al Masdar News المصدر نيوز

Can this new Cold War be nipped in the bud or is this brief moment of cooperation just a one-off event? It would certainly be better for India if the US and Russia get friendly and on the same page wrt the global Islamic problem. Russia + India + US would be an incredible combination.

the syrian pilot is really aged as combat pilots go, as are other photos I see of syaf pilots. I guess their pilot schools were in places torn by war and pipeline totally broke down, so the older semi retired desk level folks and instructor pilots are all thats left.
might be wise to send batches of younger pilots to iran or russia for training now that syaf plans to rebuild post-war...su24 is being talked of and I am sure there will be mig29 also.

ISIS today has attempted a counterattack against Iraqi forces in western Mosul.
The counterattack began by the terrorist group with the deployment with of 9 suicide bombers using cars and trucks.
Bad weather in Mosul has forced the Iraqi forces to temporarily halt their offensive in the embattled city. ISIS used this opportunity in the lull of fighting to launch their counterattack.
The counterattack was successfully repelled by government forces, leading to no advancements by the terrorist group.
Preliminary reports that up to 30+ terrorists were exterminated by the Iraqi forces.

Ankara does not oppose establishment of the Syrian army’s control over the northern Syrian city of Manbij as the Syrian land must belong to the Syrians, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on Sunday.
ANKARA (Sputnik) – Earlier this week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the next phase of Turkey's Euphrates Shield military campaign in northern Syria would target the Kurdish-controlled Manbij and called on the Democratic Union Party (PYD) and Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) to leave the city.
“We do not consider the scenario, under which the Syrian army would enter Manbij, as negative one. The Kurdish self-defense units are leaving the city. The Syrian land must belong to the Syrians,” Yildirim said at the demonstration in the northern Turkish city of Sinop.

shifting their focus onto a SE axis along the deir hafr to jirrah airbase road, the tiger forces are now around 8km from the river.
Al khafsah pocket will get trapped between SDF and SAA if they do not run away soon.
certain hills in the region like Salma hill or Safa hill used as vantage points by ISIS were heavily hit with artillery and ATGMs.

Re: Levant crisis - III
I have a spider feel americans will help the SAA on the march to Tabqah from the north and west as it makes the task of taking Raqqa easier for the SDF in the opposite shore by spreading ISIS thinner.
the SDF by itself lacks the manpower and logistics to cross the river and open another front in the west. they have held back from taking the Tabqa dam....
it will be done quietly without publicity. it could already be in progress on palmyra front along the road to sukhanah and beyond. if the syrians continue to advance easily on that axis, it would indicate either the ISIS got its back broken or unkil is doing some heavily lifting to pave the way.
meantime russians will continue to pound east aleppo and Idlib and some support over deir azzor. they are already onsite in palmyra with gunships and frogfoots daily.
ISIS is teetering on the verge of a catastrophic loss of manpower and morale. "a few hard blows and they will break and run"

Largely underreported by mainstream media, US-trained rebel factions affiliated with the Free Syrian Army (FSA) continue to harass rearguard Islamic State positions in the vast Al-Hamad desert along the border with Iraq and Jordan.
According to an opposition source close to Al-Masdar News, the FSA-linked ‘Shouhada Al-Qaritrein’, ‘Jaish Awsoud Al-Sharqiah’ and ‘Maghaweer Al-Thora’ (formerly known as the New Syrian Army) have targeted multiple ISIS outposts and supply lines in southeastern Homs in what seems to be mostly hit-and-run attacks.
The source stressed that FSA fighters have successfully ambushed five Islamic State convoys in recent weeks, resulting in the death of 30 ISIS militants and capture of an additional seven, including a Saudi
Last month, these FSA factions also captured multiple sites from ISIS in northern Sweida.
Recently, Al-Masdar published a series of photos showing US special forces training Syrian opposition recruits at an undisclosed location in Jordan.
The FSA groups in mention are composed of Sunni tribal fighters from the Deir Ezzor governorate that feel disenfranchised by the Islamic State.
These US-backed Syrian forces are based around the Al-Tanf border crossing and regularly call in American air support against ISIS.

Re: Levant crisis - III
first map tigers doing the smart thing. avoiding the two main roads and going cross country to the river. SDF will crush the top pocket and tigers can both take jirah airbase on the line of march (5k out) and curl back to encircle deir hafr totally. they should use NDF to bottle up deir hafr and make south for maskanah town without delay to spread some more panic in ISIS ranks.
Re: Levant crisis - III
in mosul the heavy fighting continues - isis is throwing everything at it, including shooting up escaping civilians. iraqis are also going in house by house and not backing down.
PMU continues slow ops to encircle tal afar but main assault not started yet - due to "sunni town" maybe a iraqi brigade once freed up from north mosul will move to tal afar to enter the town.
preparations seem ongoing to clean up the hawija pocket of ISIS further south...baghdadi could be stranded there per reports some claim tal afar also. this is a pocket surrounded by kurds in east and iraqis (shirqat, qayarrah and makhmour) in north and west. it was bypassed on the movement to mosul via baiji. the iraqi shaft is thin, baghdadi and other emirs could have escaped in 4x4 across the western desert to syria.
the rocket artillery currently in qayarrah maybe able to pivot in place to lay down fires on hawija also.
