Israel Covets Golan’s Water and Now Oil - June 7, 2016

Exclusive: Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu is defiantly asserting permanent control over the occupied Golan Heights, a determination strengthened by Israel’s extraction of water and now possibly oil from the land, writes Jonathan Marshall.

By Jonathan Marshall

On June 1, Israeli police burst into the home of an Israeli journalist, confiscated his computer and camera, and arrested him for “incitement to violence and terrorism.” His employer, Iran’s government broadcasting company, said the Druze reporter had antagonized the Netanyahu government with his hard-hitting reports on Israel’s plans for “stealing” oil from the Golan Heights, a 460-square-mile region of Syria invaded by Israel during the Six Day War in 1967.

Such reports come at a particularly sensitive time for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other right-wing Israeli politicians, who are seeking to take advantage of the ongoing war in Syria to cement Israel’s control over the Golan.

Their allies include such influential Americans as Rupert Murdoch, Dick Cheney, former CIA Director James Woolsey, and former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, all of whom are backing an oil-drilling operation of doubtful legality in the occupied region.

If exploratory drilling unlocks as much oil as some geologists predict, the occupied region could turn Israel into “an energy powerhouse.”

As recently as January 2010, the U.N. General Assembly once again reaffirmed the illegality of Israel’s claim to the land and called on Israel to desist from “changing the physical character, demographic composition, institutional structure and legal status of the occupied Syrian Golan and, in particular, to desist from the establishment of settlements” in the area. But that demand came much too late to stop Israel’s systematic land grab.

The respected Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz reported in 2010 that “Neglect and ruin are everywhere. . . . Apart from the four Druze villages at the foot of Mount Herman, [all Syrian villages] were all destroyed, in most cases down to their foundations. . . . Most were wiped off the face of the earth in a systematic process of destruction that began right after Israel’s occupation of the Golan.”

Challenging the myth that the local population simply fled during the 1967 war, the newspaper reported that the Israeli Defense Forces systematically expelled villagers and then began destroying their homes. An Israeli commander estimated that 20,000 civilians “were evacuated or left when they saw that the villages were starting to be destroyed by bulldozers and they had nowhere to return to.” Census figures indicate that more than 100,000 Syrians lost their homes and property.

Israel has no intention of ever letting them return, even if that means putting aside peace with Syria forever. Instead, Israel today has entrenched more than 20,000 of its own settlers in the Golan. Last year, the right-wing minister and Jewish Home party leader Naftali Bennett announced a five-year goal of spending hundreds of millions of shekels to settle 100,000 more Israelis on the mountain.

Genie Oil and the Israel Lobby

Genie Oil is no ordinary drilling company. Its American CEO, Howard Jonas, is a major campaign donor to Netanyahu. The chairman of its Israeli subsidiary, Brig. Gen. Efraim Eitam, is a former leader of the National Religious Party who called for expelling Palestinians from the occupied territories and murdering their leaders.

He said of the Palestinian people, “These are creatures who came out of the depths of darkness. It is not by chance that the State of Israel got the mission to pave the way for the rest of the world, to militarily get rid of these dark forces.”

The company’s shareholders include at least two billionaire supporters of Israel: multinational media magnate Rupert Murdoch and retired investment banker Lord Jacob Rothschild (whose family foundation donated the Knesset and Supreme Court buildings to Israel).

Murdoch and Rothschild also sit on Genie Oil’s well-connected “strategic advisory board.” Its chair, Michael Steinhardt, is a prominent Wall Street hedge fund manager and a major financial backer of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a hawkish, neoconservative think tank noted for its fear-mongering against Palestinian leaders as well as Syria and Iran.

Other advisory board members include former Vice President Richard Cheney; James Woolsey, former CIA Director and chairman of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies Leadership Council who has called for tougher U.S. military intervention against Syria; former Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu, who sponsored the U.S.-Israel Energy Cooperation bill; former Energy Secretary Bill Richardson; and former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers.

Potential for Regional Conflict

A report by the U.S. Army War College’s Strategic Studies Institute, released in December 2014, noted that recent energy discoveries put Israel “ahead of all East Mediterranean countries in terms of gas reserves and resource prospectivity.”

It warned, however, that conflicts over disputed ownership of oil and gas fields could lead to a regional war between Israel, Lebanon, Syria and other countries. It cited Israel’s drilling in the Golan Heights, in particular, as creating the “potential for another armed conflict between the two parties should substantial hydrocarbon resources be discovered.”

The report added ominously, “U.S. security and military support for its main allies in the case of an eruption of natural resource conflict in the East Mediterranean may prove essential in managing possible future conflict.”

Owing to Israel’s expulsion of most Golan residents in 1967, that occupied land rarely makes the news. Ever since the Six Day War, however, Israel’s conquest mentality has subverted peace negotiations with Syria. If Israel now succeeds in tapping commercial oil reserves underneath the Golan, its illegal occupation may once again fan the flames of regional conflict.

this could a kurd vision of their rojava - entire eastern turkey adjacent to armenia, parts of iran, northern iraq and the afrin-kobane-hasakah belt in syria. so its clear they have no ambitions on raqqa and US will have to rouse tribal levies from the locals around the place.

its the large arab tribes who rule the euphrates valley - which way they will swing now GCC/turkey/US/Assad is open to question. assad too is going to be in there making a play around raqqa and deir azzor hoping to use generous terms and generally "ok" past history with the tribal sheiks to keep them in his camp.

there are unpopulated places like eastern homs, east of palmyra, qalaomoun etc rich in gas and oil which belong to whoever has the bigger gun on the spot.

other complications exist like around hasakah the assyrian christians prefer assad and the SAA controls a islanded zone there.

Currently, the Syrian Armed Forces and the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) are engaged in a violent battle at this key crossroad in western Raqqa; no gains have been reported. ISIS attempted to repel the attack by launching a VBIED towards the Syrian Marines; this assault injured as many as ten soldiers after the suicide bomber detonated his explosives near the Rasafeh Crossroad. In the coming hours, the Syrian Armed Forces will likely seize this imperative crossroad, leaving them within striking distance of the Tabaqa Military Airport for the first time in 22 months.

Around midnight, the rebel-held town of Darat Izza (western Aleppo) was struck by two long-range Russian ballistic missiles, fired from positions at Khmeimim Airbase in Latakia. The missiles were of the type ‘OTR-21 Tochka’, a fierce long-range artillery weapon first developed during the 1980’s Soviet era.

Meanwhile, dozens of mostly Russian airstrikes hit the towns of Anadan, Haritan and Kafr Hamra once again tonight in an attempt to weaken the rebel frontline ahead of a highly anticipated government offensive in western Aleppo.
Tiger Forces, led by Major General Suheil al-Hassan, are yet to begin the offensive into the Anadan plains although the elite assault troops remain deployed on the outskirts of the region ready to strike upon given the order. The massive Russian bombing of western Aleppo follows statements by Russian Foreign Minister Sergio Lavrov three days ago, vowing to give the upmost air support for the Syrian Arab Army in its efforts to retake Aleppo city.

USA Flexes Muscles in Front of Russia by Placing Carrier in Mediterranean

The deployment of the US Nimitz-class aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman to the eastern Mediterranean is a "muscle flexing" move directed at Russia, The Wall Street Journal reports citing military officials

http://sputniknews.com/military/2016060 ... anean.html

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – One official in Washington told the newspaper on Wednesday that the deployment "provides some needed presence in the Med to check…the Russians."

Rear Adm. Bret Batchelder, the highest-ranking officer on the carrier, told reporters this week, as quoted by The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday, that the shift of Harry S. Truman from the Gulf to the eastern Mediterranean is "a demonstration of capability…for sure."

Last Friday, the Unite States launched its first sorties in support of the fight against the Islamic State (IS, also known as Daesh) from an aircraft carrier the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. The strike group includes the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman, the guided missile cruiser USS Anzio and the destroyer USS Gonzalez.

On Wednesday, the US European Command (EUCOM) announced that a second US aircraft carrier strike group had arrived in the Mediterranean Sea in support of US national security interests in Europe.

It was a small piece but had it penetrated the glass, at least the person sitting on right seat would have been history. That think looked about <1.5 kms distance.

Another interesting footage of 02 radio controlled explosions of IEDs near Iraqi forces attacking ISIS in Fallujah. No one dies, so safe to watch.

Experts: Russians returning to Syria? -
Published: 5 hours ago

Suggest compromise cease-fire between Moscow, Washington a failure

http://www.wnd.com/2016/06/experts-russ ... -to-syria/

WASHINGTON – Russia soon could return some 3,000 troops to Syria, Middle East experts tell Joseph Farah’s G2 Bulletin, suggesting the compromise cease-fire between Moscow and Washington has failed along with the Geneva talks.

The negotiations in Geneva currently are suspended as a result of renewed fighting by jihadi groups outside Aleppo, Syria’s largest city.

Moscow had intervened militarily in the civil war in September 2015 following a request from the Syrian government. But on March 14, 2016, Russia ordered the withdrawal of most of its forces there.

Moscow’s apparent decision comes after the United States asked Russia not to bomb the Jabhat al-Nusra group, which is al-Qaida in Syria, insisting there are elements of “moderate” jihadist groups located where al-Nusra is operating.

Now Moscow apparently has rejected Washington’s appeal, suggesting any coordination between the two nations on fighting ISIS won’t be forthcoming.

Moscow regards the groups as Salafists and makes no distinction between them and Nusra or ISIS, since many of the fighters are interchangeable with the various groups.

The jihadi Salafist groups that have formed the opposition in the Geneva talks include Jaysh al-Islam, Ahrar al-Sham, Ansar al-Sunna, Jaish al-Fateh and Jaysh al-Sunna.

Get the rest of this report, and others, at Joseph Farah’s G2 Bulletin.

According to Mideast sources, a number of the groups are coordinating attacks with Nusra and continue to receive financing and logistical support from Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

In addition, a Russian official has told G2 Bulletin that Washington considers Nusra as more “moderate” than ISIS and sees Nusra and the other jihadi groups as helping to form a new Sunni-dominated Syrian government.

The jihadi groups the U.S. wants protected from further Russian bombing, however, are not fighting to defeat ISIS but to overthrow the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whom Moscow is protecting.

Backed by Russia and Iran, Assad insists on remaining president, although the U.S. has sought his removal before any peace talks take place. The U.S. stance is supported by the jihadi opposition groups who also had attended the Geneva conferences before walking out two weeks ago.

Assad insists on remaining in office and has told the Syrian parliament he will “liberate” every inch of Syria. Like the U.S., however, the various jihadi groups insist he be removed before the resumption of peace talks.

“The way we liberated Palmyra, and before that many areas, we will liberate every last bit of Syria from their hands,” Assad said. “We have no choice but to be victorious.”

With Moscow reportedly dispatching an additional 3,000 troops to Syria, the Middle East source, who requested anonymity for security reasons, said that Russian ships are passing through the Bosporus channel “regularly.”

Should anyone think that there won't be a battle for Aleppo City, think again ..

The up coming battle for Aleppo is already being labeled the last battle for the NATO backed Al Qaeda nusrats. It has been a non stop 5-6 days of air attacks on Anadan, Hayyan, Harytan among other cities in North/NW/NE/West Aleppo, and the prep continues.

Just in.

Last night two long-range OTR21 Tochka ballistic missiles, fired from positions at Khmeimim Airbase in Latakia at the town of Darat Izza (western Aleppo).

See the location of it below, Darat Izza is one of the most important towns west of Aleppo in the way to Bab al Hawa border cross with Turkey. Lets remember, any battle for Aleppo can only make sense if the Bab al Hawa border crossing is taken from the terrorists or made impossible to be used.

http://wikimapia.org/#lang=pt&lat=36.29 ... 5&z=13&m=b

The sequence of events is showing the Aleppo-Day is approaching:
1) Week long fierce air attacks around NE, NW and West of Aleppo.
2) The announced top military leaders from Syria-Iraq-Russia meeting this week to align for the up coming decisive battle.
3) Terrorists-Turkish communication towers inside Syria in the Syria-Turkish border being singled out by RuAF.
4) Key towns on west Aleppo vital for the terrorists supply lines are hit by potent ballistic missiles.
