the "tribal forces" thing in SyRaq is amazing. rural areas are settled in contiguous zones by close-knit tribes and then groupings of allied tribes with histories stretching back long time. all of them are armed to the HMG, technical, RPG and 81mm mortar level. they have charismatic Sheiks who modulate the relations with the national govt. these sheiks some of them joined ISIS on own and some were intimidated when the ISIS arrived and fell in line.

in effect 80% of fighting age men in Mideast islamic countries are able to bear arms via these umbrella orgs like PMU, tribal forces... the other 20% could be in some vital jobs in other sectors and cannot be spared .

‘US Secret Services' Tried to Nab 29 Russian Troops in Syria ... and Got Their Butts Kicked - Russian Military
It’s a real war out there … and Russians and Americans are practically in combat

Justin Huebner Subscribe to 17983Wed, Sep 20, 2017
Russia says Americans are on the ground
Now this is something you won't see on NBC nightly news.

The Russian military spokesman in this briefing, General Sergei Rudskoi, in a matter-of-fact deadpan, explains that 'US Secret Services’, and their Al Qaeda proxies, had a very, very bad day yesterday.

Americans love bombing small, defenseless countries into the stone age, it’s part of their culture like baseball, apple pie, and morbid obesity. One of the things they never do, however, is pick on a country that can fight back.

General Rudskoi has just the facts, and nothing but the facts

Well this time they messed with the Russian Bear himself and like Napoleon and Hitler before them, reality ensued.

Yesterday, according to General Rudskoi, an army of “moderate” decapitators, directed by their 'US Secret Service’ handlers, double-crossing the Russians by violating a ceasefire agreement, launched an attack with tanks and artillery on the Syrian Government north of Hama in the de-escalation zone, in an attempt to halt the Syrian Army’s successful advance.

A key part of the plan was to capture 29 Russian soldiers, which would have been a major embarrassment for Russia.

Here’s where the story gets gripping.

The 29 Russians were trapped for several hours by the militants, engaged in a heavy fire-fight for their very survival.

Finally, a Spetsnaz (Russian Special Operations) unit, partially composed of 'military natives of the North Caucusus' (these are probably Chechens, the fiercest soliders Russia has), broke through the terrorist line.

Then, like lightning over the skies of Syria, Russian Sukhoi jets conducted pinpoint strikes against the opposition force, which was subsequently bombarded with an artillery salvo, providing cover for the Russian rescue squad.

They successfully reached their comrades, and though three operators were injured, Russia suffered no casualties.

AL-Qaeda and the US ‘Secret Services’ however, had a very, very, bad day.

“187 objects, about 850 TERRORISTS, 11 TANKS, four armoured vehicles, 46 PICKUPS, five mortars, 20 TRUCKS and 38 WEAPONS WAREHOUSES were destroyed in a 24-hours period by the Russian counterattack.”
The Russian General’s closing comment, delivered in matter-of-fact monotone was classic:

“The operation to destroy the terrorists will be continued.”
Here's the full transcript of the General's remarks: (Key parts in bold)

A large-scale offensive on the positions of Syrian Government troops in the Idlib de-escalation zone, which breached a ceasefire agreement, was “initiated by the American secret services to stop the successful advance of the [Syrian] government troops to the east of Deir ez-Zor,”

Head of the Main Operational Department of Russian General Staff Sergei Rudskoi said in a briefing in Moscow, Wednesday.

Sergei Rudskoi, Head of Main Operational Department of Russian General Staff (Russian):

“Despite the agreements signed on 15th November in Astana, Jabhat Al-Nusra militants joined by groups unwilling to comply with the terms of the ceasefire, at 8.00am [local time] (06:00am GMT) on September 19 launched a large-scale offensive on the positions of government troops to the north and northeast of Hama in the Idlib de-escalation zone.

The attack was carried out with the support of tanks and infantry fighting vehicles, it was preceded by an artillery barrage.

During the day, the militants managed to penetrate 12 kilometres [7.5 miles] through the government troops’ defence line and at the front up to 20 kilometres [12.4 miles].

According to current information, the attack was initiated by the American secret services to stop the successful advance of the [Syrian] government troops to the east of Deir ez-Zor.

One of the main goals of the militants’ actions was an attempt to capture units of the Russian military police, amounting to 29 service personnel carrying out tasks at an observation point deployed in the area to control the de-escalation forces.

In the militants’ attack, a (Russian) military police platoon of 29 people was trapped and for several hours repelled the attacks of the enemy shoulder to shoulder with the Mwali tribe, which signed the agreement on joining the cessation of hostilities and remained true to it in this difficult situation.

In these extreme conditions the commander of the Russian forces in Syria, General-Colonel Surovkin, formed a rescue group.

It was composed of units of special operations forces, military police, joined by the military-natives of the North Caucasus (i.e - Chechens) and the Syrian Special Forces.

The squad was headed by Deputy Head of the Russian Center for Reconciliation of the Warring Parties and Hero of Russia, Major General Victor Shuliak.

Aviation conducted strikes on the terrorists’ positions. The actions of the rescue squad were constantly supported by a pair of Sukhoi Su-25s, striking at militants and armored vehicle militants from extremely low altitudes.

As a result, the encirclement was broken and units of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, without a loss, reached the area controlled by the [Syrian] government troops. During the operation, three soldiers of the Special Operations Forces were injured. All participants of this unique operation were presented with state awards.

A terrorist attack was stopped and they suffered heavy losses due to the measures taken by the Russian command together with the General Staff of Syria.

Air and artillery strikes destroyed 187 objects, about 850 terrorists, 11 tanks, four armoured vehicles, 46 pickups, five mortars, 20 trucks and 38 weapons warehouses were destroyed in a 24-hours period.

Using the results of the fire support, units of the fifth volunteer assault corps, together with squads of government troops with the support of Russian aircraft, counterattacked and currently almost completely regained the ground lost.

The operation to destroy the terrorists will be continued.”

SAA have created another ISIS pocket North West of DeZ. The central Hama pocket is likely to go as both South Front and Al Masdar are reporting a deal with ISIS to vacate central Hama.

The 21st Sep attack by Al Qaeda (HTS - Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham or Al Nusra) in the southern Idlib, Northern Hama area failed big time. Some 29 Russian MPs were trapped in a de-escalation zone. Russia really hit back. The entire attack failed. 06 injured on the Russian/ SAA/ Allies side and Al Qaeda nos are 850+ as per Ruskis and 300+ as per Al Qaeda themselves. Idlib is just beginning to get hot.

Jobar - Eastern Ghouta conflict continues in a stalemate. Here is a video on why the SAA makes no progress with English subtitles. Note the flying shells.

Russian Satellite Images Show U.S And SDF Forces Pass Thru ISIS Territories Without Fights
Last updated Sep 24, 2017
The Russian Ministry of Defense has released aerial images which they say show US Army special forces equipment north of the town of Deir er-Zor, where ISIS militants are deployed.

US Army special units provide free passage for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) through the battle formations of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorists, the ministry said in a statement.

“Without resistance from ISIS militants the SDF troops are moving along the left bank of the Euphrates river towards the town of Deir ez-Zor,” the statement reads.

“Despite the strongholds of the US armed forces being located where ISIS troops are currently deployed, there are not even signs of the organization of a battle outpost,” the Russian Ministry of Defense said.

This could mean that the US military staff “feel absolutely safe” in the area which is held by the terrorists, the ministry of defense stated.

All of the images were taken from September 8 to 12. The photos show several Cougar infantry mobility vehicles and Hummer armored vehicles of the US Army special forces, according to the Russian MoD data.

One miss; one hit, and both those impact vids were bombs, not cruise missiles. I understand they need to mix and match vids sometimes, but most of the Russian strike footage is like this. Their accuracy is also very poor, around 50% from most of the vids I've seen, and that's from cherry-picked footage released by Russian MOD. The real accuracy must be far worse.

As long as it gets the job done, I suppose. At least their bombs are big enough to do serious damage even when they miss.

Well of course I'm factoring that in, but when this is the case, you can tell. When the bomb lands in an empty field next to a vehicle or building with crosshairs hovering over it, it's pretty obviously a miss.

But in any case, like I said it doesn't matter. The Russian bombs are big enough that they often make up for the poor accuracy, and besides, they're winning. However inaccurate Russian strikes may be, they're "good enough".

You are implying that Russia dont have accurate guidance but makes it up for large warhead which is not True , All Guided Bomb be it cruise missile or GPS or LGB were accurate enough to hit where they wanted to hit but no system is full proof as all weapons including guided from any nation have their probability of kill , Infact Kh-101 and Kalbir demonstrated CEP of 2-3 m which is what MOD said but looking at the videos they showed Zero CEP as Brahmos does all the time.

What you say is true for Unguided bomb dropped from Su-24 or Tu-22M3 these are dump bomb dropped via SVP-24 navigation and guidance system which demonstrated a CEP of 20-25 M and since the bomb were big enough with explosive they did their job good enough and likely a Running Jihadi all over the place spread over say 100-200 m over the plain are taken care by Cluster Weapons as they spread out or a dumb bomb a guided bomb wont have much impact

Once again Tu-95MS and Kh-101 are in Action today , this time the footage looks much better than previous one

Tu-95 long-range bombers of the Russian Aerospace Forces targeted, today, positions for the jihadi groups of ISIS and Jabhet al-Nusra in Syria’s Deir Ezzor and Idlib provinces.

“Tu-95MS strategic bombers have carried out strikes with cruise missiles against the facilities of international terrorist groups in Syria. Taking off from the Engels airfield in Russia, the Tu-95s bombers flew over the territory of Iran and Iraq to perform the mission,” Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said. Konashenkov added that key positions and infrastructure for the terror organizations in both provinces have been targeted by the highly-destructive H-101 cruise missiles.

The bombers were escorted by Su-30 and Su-35 aircrafts – stationed at the coastal airbase of Khmeimim – to provide cover.

“The sudden strikes destroyed the terrorists’ command posts, areas where militants and their equipment were concentrated, as well as ammunition depots,” Konashenkov said, adding that “objective control data confirmed that all targets were struck.”

According to Russian reports, the bridge is 210 meters long, having been built several kilometers from Deir Ezzor city, and can handle the crossing of 8,000 vehicles per day.

Russian military sources have placed great emphasis on the fact that the brigade was built in just two days and with no losses to engineering personnel despite coming under constant attack by ISIS armed drones and artillery.

The new bridge is strong enough to facilitate the movement of main battle tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and self-propelled artillery assets to the eastern bank of the Euphrates to maintain Syrian Army operations against ISIS

Why should they take any action against oil pipeline it will hurt them as well and create more bad blood.

Kurdistan will remain part of Iraq likely with greater autonomy as countries like Iran Turkey Syria , Russia and Iraq does not support independence for what is Sunni majority Kurd although US and Israel just tacitly support it but they dont do it overtly.

The 200 or 300kg warhead of kalibr is not hacking it against the large targets like workshops and bunkers in idlib. Often 1 of 4 building is taken out. Its costly to use.

Ruaf needs to bring in more su30 and su34 armed with 1500 kg bombs to start erasing these targets

The Russian kalbir has 450-500 kg warhead so is kh-101

But it's not a substitute mass to cluster or multiple widely disperses 500/1000 kg dumb bomb dropped from Su-24 each has its own merits and use case.

I think they use cruise missile for element of surprise more than any thing else an aircraft taking off will get detected by Isis friendly country radar and general heading of aircraft would be transmitted which gives them chance to run away like those air siren raid we saw during war.

Cruise missile flying low is tough to detect and can change direction multiple times making it difficult to alert munnas in advance who is visiting them.

Al masdar news

DAMASCUS, SYRIA (8:30 P.M.) – Moments ago, the Islamic State claimed to have reentered the junction city of Al-Suknah in eastern Homs just hours after seizing an adjacent mountain that overlooks the government stronghold.

In a bulletin released by Amaq Agency on Thursday evening, ISIS also claimed to have killed over 100 soldiers of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) amid a broad front offensive on the supply line to Deir Ezzor today. A second bulletin released minutes ago also indicated that four SAA tanks had been knocked out in the process.

Despite reaching out to its military sources, Al-Masdar News was not immediately able to confirm whether the Islamic State had entered Al-Suknah or not. However, an exclusive military source told Al-Masdar News that all available SAA troops were being rushed to reinforce the collapsing frontline.

Thus far, ISIS belligerents have already infiltrated the formerly SAA-held towns of Al-Shulah and Kabajib on the M7-highway between Palmyra and Deir Ezzor in what is said to be the Islamic State’s single largest offensive of 2017.

However, government forces are by all accounts mobilizing for a major counter-offensive to crush the jihadist combattants once and for al
