Pakistan grants Rs 300 million to madrassa linked to Afghan Taliban - PTI

Pakistan's Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government has allocated Rs 300 million in its budget to a madrassa known as the 'University of Jihad' and having top Afghan Taliban leaders among its alumni, including its former chief Mullah Omar.

"I am proudly announcing that Darul Uloom Haqqania Nowshera will get Rs 300 million to meet its annual expenditures," Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Minister Shah Farman told the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly this week.

He said the Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) government in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa was not raiding and targeting religious institutions but has been cooperating and providing financial assistance to it.

The madrassa in Akora Khattak in Nowshera district of the province is known for having several top Afghan Taliban leaders among its alumni, including former Taliban chief Mullah Omar who received an honorary doctorate from the seminary.

Haqqani Network founder Jalaluddin Haqqani, Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent leader Asim Umar and slain Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Akhtar Mansoor, who was killed in a US drone strike last month, were among alumni of the seminary which is dubbed as the 'University of Jihad'.

When asked about such a big chunk of financial assistance to a single seminary, minister for religious affairs Habibur Rehman said that chief minister Pervez Khattak had promised to Haqqania madrassa's administration financial assistance of Rs 150 million which was adjusted in the Auqaf fund this year, the News International reported.

"Darul Uloom Haqqania is one of the oldest and largest seminaries of Pakistan and it deserves financial assistance," Rehman, who belongs to Jamaat-i-Islami, was quoted as saying by the paper.

Rehman said that Rs 150 million would be provided to the madrassa in 2016-17 while the remaining amount would be given to it next year.

Founded in 1947, the Islamic seminary is currently headed by Maulana Sami ul Haq, the leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam. He also serves as the chairman of the Difa-e-Pakistan Council, an umbrella coalition of more than 40 groups, including Hafeez Saeed-led Jamat-ud-Dawa (JuD) and the banned Sipah-e-Sahaba.

Farman said that the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government was providing financial assistance to other seminaries and mosques in the province.

Maulana Sandwich will be immensely pleased tonight.

In fact, just before 9/11 happened, Dar-ul-Uloom Haqqania organized a meeting which was attended, among others, by Gen. Hamid Gul and Gen. Mirza Aslam Beg wherein a declaration was made to defend Osama bin Laden and attack the Western countries as a sacred duty of Muslims.

Angered by the award of knighthood to Salman Rushdie, the Maulana advised the Pakistani government to devise a similar scheme of recognition and give the first award to Osama bin Laden.

Pakistan’s inability to take action against terrorists affecting bilateral ties: Pentagon

WASHINGTON (News Desk) – The Pentagon has said that existence of safe havens for terrorists such as Haqqani Network in Pakistan and Islamabad’s inability to take action against the militant group is affecting US-Pakistan bilateral ties and other security programmes.
In its biannual report, the US military headquarter noted that Defence Secretary Ashton Carter did not certification to Pakistan’s action against the Haqqani Network, that is why the Pentagon withheld $300 million Coalition Support Funds to Pakistan for the ongoing fiscal year which ends on September 30.

“The US continues to be clear with Pakistan about steps it should take to improve the security environment and deny safe havens to terrorist and extremist groups,” the report said while adding “these conversations continue to affect not only the US dialogue with Pakistan on security as well as stability in Afghanistan.”
Alleging that safe terrorist haven still exist in Pakistan, the Pentagon said groups including Taliban, al-Qaeda, AQIS, the Haqqani Network, Lashkar-e Tayyiba, Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, IS-K, and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan have sanctuaries and operational existence in Pakistan.
The report also urged Pakistan to play a role in countering the terrorist threats in the region. The report has now been forwarded to US Congress, which will decide on possible debate on it.

Pakistan's "image problem" takes a turn for the worse. Hope that the debate, triggers a lot of anti -Pakistan feelings in the US Congress and public opinion, which in turn will aggravate the "image problem" more, which in turn, would increase the urgency for a good lobbying firm, to plead Pakistan's case before US Lawmakers; by that time, Trump will be POTUS, and he is not going to be swayed by this PR BS

But Pakistan could not have become a godfather of sorts to most of the world's terrorist organisations had it not been for the puzzling acquiescence, over the past 15 years, of the United States.

Whether it was a case of prolonged underestimation, a strong and generous Pakistani lobby in Washington, or simply a chaotic AfPak strategy - or lack thereof - the US did not challenge Pakistan's behaviour in any serious and consistent manner.

“Tell your voters to eat chicken if they say that Daal Mash is as expensive as Rs260 per kilogram, and they should prefer to eat chicken which is available for Rs200 per Kg,” he said while responding to the opposition members’ hue and cry over the increased prices of pulses.

About news and allegations about his son, he advised the critics that there was no need to drag them into politics.
About the expenditure of the president, the minister said the president represented the country at international forums and the government had to allocate funds for fulfilling his responsibilities.
He claimed that the amount spent on the Presidency now was far lower than that used by previous governments.
Ishaq Dar assured that the salaries of MNAs would be reviewed after the return of the prime minister from London.

Only ISI and IB still have ‘secret funds’, Dar tells NA

ISLAMABAD: The Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Intelligence Bureau (IB) are the only two departments that are still using secret service funds, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar told the National Assembly on Saturday.

“On Jun 11, 2013, four days after the cabinet took the oath, we abolished the secret service funds of 32 organisations. Only ISI and IB still retain theirs, and a proper mechanism is in place for their audit,” he said.

The most controversial secret fund used to be the one available with the information ministry, which was allegedly used to ‘pay off’ friendly journalists.

Earlier, the Jamaat-i-Islami’s Sher Akbar Khan took issue with the government’s incessant borrowing and stressed the need to devise policies that would help curtail the country’s external debt

“The Council of Common Interests ( that strange animal again !) has already set a limit for the provinces, which is why three of the four provinces have a deficit budget,” he said, adding that now it was possible for the provinces to field deficit budgets up to a certain point.

Dar seeks Rs10.4tr to service debt

ISLAMABAD: Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on Friday placed a demand before National Assembly for borrowing a whopping Rs10.4 trillion in new fiscal year to service maturing public debt while announcing the withdrawal of a controversial amendment in the income tax law.

The minister faced great difficulty in delivering the budget windup speech due to thin presence of members of the National Assembly – proceedings were twice disrupted after opposition lawmakers pointed out that members present were less than the minimum required strength of 86.

Deepening internal rifts in the ruling party in absence of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif appeared to be one of the reasons behind thin presence on treasury benches.

Dar also announced more incentives for agriculture sector, government servants and low-grade army personnel while promising to increase the salaries of the members of parliament after consulting with Prime Minister Nawaz.

While concluding the debate on budget 2016-17 that continued for about 12 days, Dar announced the government has decided to withdraw clause 23 of the Finance Bill that had been proposed to bring foreign trusts under the ambit of law.

“The purpose of this amendment was not to give relaxation to anybody rather it has been proposed to get the membership of the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)”, said Dar while withdrawing the amendment.

Last week, the opposition dubbed the clause ‘Maryam law’, alleging that it was a “move to give backdoor escape to the prime minister’s daughter, Maryam Nawaz, in the Panamagate scandal”.

Dar also presented a Rs10.4 trillion demand to service and repay the domestic and foreign debt. The demand was presented as ‘Charged Expenditure’, in which the National Assembly can only debate but cannot veto the spending bill. Out of Rs10.4 trillion, an amount of Rs1.36 trillion is booked in the budget as cost of debt servicing. The remaining sum will be directly raised from international and domestic markets to pay off the past debt.

The government will borrow Rs8.38 trillion to pay domestic debt that is maturing in the next fiscal year. Rs698 billion will be borrowed from external sources to repay foreign debt inducing short-term loans.

Dar said public debt increased by Rs4.9 trillion to Rs19.2 trillion from July 2013 to March 2016, which was less than what the PPP government added in its five-year term.

The minister vowed that his government would amend the Fiscal Responsibility and Debt Limitation (FRDL) Act of 2005 through the Finance Bill 2016 after his understanding to amend the FRDL Act through a separate bill could not materialise. Earlier in the day, Law Minister Zahid Hamid withdrew the FRDL Bill from the agenda of the Senate after proposing it as a separate bill.

Official statistics credibility

Dar insisted that official statistics were credible after MNAs questioned the figures of annual growth rate, budget deficit and unemployment. He said people were questioning the statistics without presenting evidence of manipulation

Contrary to Dar’s claim, independent economists have already presented their findings about manipulation of the annual GDP figure.

New Incentives

Dar announced duties and sales tax on import of naval ships and the federal excise duty on chartered flights for movement of military troops has been abolished.

He announced a merger of 2015-16’s 7.5% ad-hoc allowance of the government employees into their basic salaries, bringing the total number of ad-hoc relief merged in the salaries to three. This will marginally increase the take home salaries of employees. Dar also announced an increase in residence compensation allowance for military officials ranked as sepoys to junior commissioned officers in the range of Rs208 to Rs560 per month.

He reduced custom duties on import of raw material for manufacturing of SIM cards and smart cards.

The minister announced to halve the sales tax rate on locally manufactured and imported tractors to 5%.He announced to abolish custom duties on import of harvesters and planters. The sales tax on laser land levelers has also been abolished. Dar said that the agriculture package that was announced in budget will take effect from the day president will give assent to the budget instead of from July 1st. The sales tax on import of dairy sector machinery and equipment has been reduced from 17% to 5%.

Dar also announced tax benefits for promoting digitisation. Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) had recommended this package.

‘Om’ on shoes angers Hindus in Pakistan

Some shopkeepers in Pakistan’s Sindh province allegedly sold shoes with sacred Hindu word “Om” inscribed on them, angering the minority community in the country which described it unfortunate and blasphemous.
The patron-in-chief of the Pakistan Hindu Council (PHC), Ramesh Kumar told PTI they had already lodged protests with the Sindh government and local authorities in Tando Adam Khan after it was brought to the notice of the Hindu community that shoes were being sold with the sacred word “Om” inscribed on them.
“It is most unfortunate that some shopkeepers in Tando Adam Khan are selling shoes on the occasion of Eid ul Azha with the Hindu sacred word inscribed on them and the purpose just appears to be to insult the sentiments of the Hindu community,” Kumar said.
“The pictures of the these shoes have been circulated on the social media and we demand they be removed from shops immediately,” he said

When it comes to corruption in Sindh, the sky is the limit. Not only is the corruption financial but, as a confidential report presented to the army chief last year revealed, there is a nexus of politicians, government officials and the police with terror networks like Al-Qaeda, the Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) and Lyari gangs. Among the allegations contained in the report was that terrorists were working with officials in the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) to collect extortion money.

Massive corruption in Sindh has been uncovered in the last year after three different inquiries into the police were launched, specifically in the recruitment and promotion, transfer and postings, procurement, purchase of uniforms, CCTV cameras, arms and ammunition and investigation and security.

No wonder that Krachi is a no-go area for foreign journalists around the world! Daniel Pearl was kidnapped and murdered there !

According to sources, the PPP government set up a Special Security Unit to look after the security of its leaders. It has a budget of around 10 billion rupees and its head is said to be more powerful than the Sindh IGP. The provincial government is still providing security to PPP leaders such as Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who holds no official position but has more security than the governor and the chief minister.

Similar to the "family business" practiced in Saudia; no distinction between the "Extended Coterie of Prince and Princesses " and the Kingdom; both entities "dip into" each other's " Treasury"

The unit has about 5,000 highly-trained officers and even an office in the Trading Corporation of Pakistan, which does not come under the jurisdiction of the police. It is currently under investigation by NAB (the "investigation results " can be " altered "for the "right price" ) for the purchase of thousands of M-14 rifles, which were bought for $4,000 per rifle, as opposed to a price of $900 by the police.

This type of corruption has infested every function of the police. Of the five CCTV cameras installed at 176 different places in Karachi, many have stopped working because of a lack of maintenance or repair. UPS batteries are either never installed or only purchased on paper.

Some "disgruntled police afsar" must have leaked a lot of "juice" to the reporter !

The most scope for corruption in the police is in recruitment, transfers, postings and promotions, where bribery (plus the "Sifarish" factor !)is often the leading factor in making decisions. This is why the Rangers asked the chief minister and home minister to refrain from making frequent transfers and postings and even sent a report to the Supreme Court about it.

The police, like just about every other political actor in the city, is also involved in land scams. Plots, which were supposed to go to the families of officers killed in action or to officers cited for gallantry, were instead distributed among sitting officers. Each plot cost around Rs. 5 crores and was in the Defence housing societies.The Sindh government, too, has taken over 200 plots from the DHA, and then handed it over to their favourites, in return for giving land in other places to the DHA.

More than anything else, it is the illegal process of “China-cutting” that has allowed corruption to thrive when it comes to the sale of land. China-cutting is when a large piece of land, such as amenity plots, government plots, parks or cemeteries are divided into smaller plots and sold separately. It is estimated that more than Rs. 100 billion worth of land has been sold illegally. In fact, the chief minister was informed that of the 900,000 acres of land owned by the Sindh government, 6,000 acres had been sold illegally.

6000 out of 900,000 is still less than 1%; so there is still lots of potential for further "mischief"

The sale of railway tracks, for instance, is believed to have put the plan for the Karachi Circular Railway into jeopardy.

Right now, NAB has 190 high-profile cases open in Sindh, which include sitting and former PPP ministers, government servants and even some businessmen. One of the more prominent cases is against former provincial information minister Sharjeel Memon who, along with figures from his party and PPP-backed bureaucrats, is alleged to have taken over Rs. 4.5 million in kickbacks. Memon has so far escaped accountability by fleeing to Dubai.

Another minister who fled to Dubai while under NAB investigation is Owais Muzaffar Tappi who, along with de facto chief minister Faryal Talpur, is considered the most powerful politician in Sindh. He managed to escape by informing law-enforcement agencies that he was going to bring back the body of his cousin to the country.

How is he any different from Mushy, who fed the media and the Paki Aam Aadmi, the "cock and bull" story about his "bad health" and was caught on camera boarding up the Dubai flight by stairs without any help in spite of his "spine and heart problem" !

All of this corruption was made public by the DG Rangers, Major Bilal Akbar, when a press release revealed that he had briefed the Sindh Apex Committee that Rs. 230 million is collected illegally in Karachi, usually in the form of extortion, and then distributed to the armed wings of political parties and militant groups. When asked why he made this information public, Akbar told me, “I had given the statement to the apex committee which then asked the government to take action. We waited for a few weeks and when no action was taken we decided to share the information with the people.”

So, the investigation was put in "cold storage" for the right price !

In the video statement Baloch gave to the JIT, he said he controlled the fisheries department, from which he earned 10 crores a month, and out of which he gave a share to Bilawal House (inevitable Zardari connection ! is the -foreign educated - junior also on the take ?) and other “officers.”

But few can match Dr. Asim Hussain, a school friend of Asif Zardari’s, who has been charged with corruption in a Rs. 460 billion case. When the Rangers decided to arrest Dr. Asim, the information was kept secret, even from the Sindh Apex Committee, after others who were about to be arrested were forewarned and able to escape. And Doctor Saheb, who apparently holds dual Canadian Citizenship recently petitioned the Canadian High Commissioner to get him out of this Royal Mess, by invoking his Canadian credentials !

According to the JIT report on Dr. Asim, he is facing charges of terror financing, money laundering and corruption. NAB has recently filed a reference in which he is accused of misuse of authority as a federal minister between 2008 and 2012, particularly relating to interference in SSGC, SNGPL, KESC and PSO among others. He has also been accused of establishing 36 private companies abroad, out of which 11 are in the UAE, five in Kuwait and two in the UK.

Dr. Asim has denied all the allegations but when I met him in the hospital he also seemed unhappy at how he had been abandoned by his friends in the government. He said, “I became a victim of circumstance and was arrested for reasons other than those mentioned by the Rangers or NAB. Some in the government also had a role in my arrest. I was interrogated for 90 days and then also by NAB and accused of having ties with RAW, but I will fight to clear my name.”

NAB is also holding an inquiry into corruption in the education department in everything from recruitment to the purchase of text books and leasing government school buildings. One such investigation is into the former education minister Pir Mazhar, who is accused of giving jobs to some 13,000 unqualified teachers, something he has denied.

Ghost schools, madarasahs, ghost teachers were recently given much press coverage in the Paki media !

Now, even international donors are shying away from funding projects in Sindh. The Asian Development Bank had allocated some 200 million dollars for the Sindh Road Improvement Project three years ago. That money is now about to lapse and the government is yet to appoint a project director. A staff member of the Canadian High Commission met with the chief minister in May and said the Canadian government is withdrawing the 20 million Canadian dollars that had been sanctioned for a eachers’ training programme.All of the corruption mentioned here is only the tip of the iceberg as almost every government department has been affected. This has a negative impact on not just our economy but our national security as well but no one seems willing or able to tackle this rotten culture.

US directs Pakistan to pursue closer ties with India

The aftermath of Modi’s US visit especially his address to the joint session of Congress has created a lot of euphoria in India as people are too much upbeat about India’s sure steps on the road to progress and development. Social media is agog with effusive praise for Modi; the praise has transcended the borders as people from bordering Islamic countries, messages continue pouring in.

However on the other side of the border, Modi phenomenon has created a different response that is a strange mixture of appreciation, jealousy and hatred. Even his active 18-hour a day work schedule has invited ridicule which denotes to what extent jealousy can blind a whole nation. Modi seems to have set an exacting work standard which everybody appreciates but none dares to match. Even small matters like his travelling through the night rather than resting at expensive hotels are subjects of discussion.

Pakis inevitably compare the "high energy" and "work ethic " of Modi-ji, with the "laziness" and "aeyaashi" of Ganja Sharif !

Modi’s work ethics seems to have rubbed off on Pakistani civil and military leadership which went into a quick huddle to review situations arising out of India’s proactive diplomacy in the neighbourhood vis a vis Afghanistan and Iran and its growing closeness to Gulf countries-UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Look busy, no nothing and shout bombastic statements

Given Pakistan’s image as a notorious proliferator for supplying nuclear technology to North Korea and Iran, its latest spurt of efforts to secure NSG membership is laughable; it could lead to a delay in India’s bid for membership. The entire nation seems to be on the edge as Foreign Affairs advisor Sartaj Aziz is busy calling up NSG member countries for support amidst US warning that the country must apply for membership (must be "private message" so as not to embarrasse the senile Aziz and the Paki nation !) rather than seeking individual endorsements of nations.

Cooperation and coordination is the way forward but Pakistan should understand that terrorism has to stop to kick-start comprehensive talks on all issues. Mutual suspicions have delivered nothing for either nation as Pakistan forced three wars on India in the past. There should be more to the India Pak relations than mere bickering, suspicion, fighting and support for terror.

After a turbulent decade in which militants staged frequent gun and bomb attacks on cities, some investors still refuse to visit Pakistan and insist on meeting Saigol in Dubai.
“Most people have never been to Pakistan. It's a huge problem,” said Saigol, sipping a cappuccino in an upscale cafe in capital Islamabad.
“When people visit Pakistan, they see it's actually opposite of what they expect.”

The usual bombastic statement that can be expected from a Paki businessman with a vested interest !

Saigol's frustration goes to the heart of Pakistan's struggle to attract foreign investment and boost economic growth from 4.7 percent towards above 6 percent, the minimum level experts say is needed to absorb new entrants into the job market in a nation of 190 million people.
Pakistan's $250 billion economy is growing at the fastest pace in eight years but only attracted $1 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) in the nine months to April. FDI inflows into Indonesia, by comparison, hit $29 billion last year.

Perceptions take time to change

The progress is in stark contrast to economic instability during the past decade, when the stock market collapsed and militants held territory 100km from Islamabad.

The militants have since been contained in small pockets in mountainous areas near the Afghan border and the country's stock market is Asia's best performing index in 2016.

“Perceptions change with a lag. Our reality has changed, but it takes a little while for investors to realise that,” said Miftah Ismail, an adviser to the prime minister tasked with bringing foreign investment into Pakistan.

Pakistan's main benchmark index has risen more than 500 percent since the start of 2009, but is still considered cheap by some, trading at multiples below other emerging markets due to political and security risks associated with Pakistan.

Saigol, founding partner of Baltoro Capital, which manages a new $48.5 million private equity fund, said foreign investors who finally take a serious look at Pakistan are often surprised.

“They say they have never seen a country or an economy the size of Pakistan with so little coverage, so under the radar.”

Saigol, the businessman is obviously having a good time with his business and hence the optimistic viewpoint !

Doctor belonging to Ahmadi community shot dead in Karachi

KARACHI: A 50-year-old homeopathic doctor, belonging to the Ahmadi community, was shot dead in his clinic in the Abul Hasan Isphani area of the metropolis on Monday evening.
It is the second such attack in the same vicinity within a month, police and a community spokesman said.
“Dr Chaudry Abdul Khaleeq was gunned down in an attack on his clinic,” confirmed Malir SSP Rao Anwar.
The police official added the clinic was located in the slum area of Sikander Goth, in the limits of Sachal police station.
“He sustained a single bullet wound to his head,” added Anwar.

Ahmadis have faced persecution at the hands of religious extremists and right wing forces. The state jumped into the fray in 1974, when the then Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto introduced a constitutional amendment declaring them non-Muslim to ward off pressure from right-wing forces.
The subjugation of Ahmadis started soon after Independence in 1947. Led by Jamaat-i-Islami, right-wing groups spearheaded anti-Ahmadi campaigns. The first such violent movement erupted in Punjab, in 1953, leading to the imposition of martial law in the province.

ISLAMABAD: Security forces claimed to have eliminated the entire leadership of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), a group with the potential to provide foot soldiers to Islamic State or ‘Daish’ in Pakistan, revealed an official document.
Over 226 jet-black terrorists have been killed and 1,000 hardcore militants arrested since the beginning of this year in combing operations conducted by the special counter-terrorism forces in the Punjab.
“By zeroing in on the banned LeJ, we have made it sure that the IS or ‘Daish’ does not have easy inroads into our country,” said a top official, who is a part of the operation to hunt down the militants in the province.

The counter-terrorism forces arrested 637 hardcore militants of LeJ and its splinter groups in months long drive. Intelligence agencies and CTD, after intercepting many calls, decided to target them, he recalled. “All these militants went into an alliance with ‘Daish’ because they need relevancy,” he told the Geo News.

Former ambassador Ali Sarwar Naqvi says, “It is a murky situation though — however, the LeJ deserved to be wiped out.” Under the National Action Plan, it is obligatory for security forces and intelligence agencies to dismantle not only the LeJ but also to clean up all franchises of militant organisations like Hizb-ut-Tahrir, Al-Qaeda, JeM and TTP, (but not the LET and the JAISH !)Naqvi observed. If the LeJ’s entire leadership is really eliminated, then it is definitely a positive sign that from now on the state is no longer backing up such elements, he added.

The error margin is estimated to be approximately 2-3 percent at 95 percent confidence level.

Is there any assurance that the sample was random, representative of the entire Paki population, the questions being asked were not biased and importantly, the work was done in a professional and scientific way and the semi literate population of Pakiland ( a recent non-scientific survey showed that very few Aam aadmis could even name one city in Balochistan ) understand the complex issues !

In the survey, the people were also asked to evaluate Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s performance and how much they were satisfied with it.Responding to this, 54 percent said they were quite satisfied with the Prime Ministers’ performance. Of the 54 percent, 21 percent said they were much satisfied while 33 percent claimed they were satisfied to some extent.

A better way would have been to ask the Aam Abduls to compare Ganja's performance as "PM", with that of Modi-ji, and see if Ganja's performance is = = Modijee (the Paki obsession with = =

Responding to this, majority of the people, 84 percent believe that democracy is a better alternative to dictatorship, while 16 percent people hold the opinion that dictatorship is a better option.

To remind you: on May 21 a taxi driver called Mohammad Azam was earning his tiny daily wage by picking up passengers who crossed the Iranian border into Pakistan. Sometimes he would take them only to nearby villages, but that day he picked up a client who wanted to go to the city of Quetta, eight hours drive away. He drove off in his Toyota Corolla, and a few hours later, when he stopped for a rest, the Pentagon’s Hellfires struck and blasted the car to twisted shards of metal – and reduced Azam and his customer to smoking corpses.

Being an army man, he must be familiar with the concept of "collateral damage", which the Pakistan army is also "creating" in its campaign called Zarb-e- Arb

Azam’s passenger was the brutal Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mansoor, travelling under a false identity. His sought-for anonymity didn’t do him much good, however, because while he was in Iran or – more likely – when he was going through border crossing examination on the Pakistan side, a US-paid agent planted a chip on him (inside information ? )that could be tracked by the missile-shooting video-gamers.

If a person in a foreign country that can’t retaliate to drone strikes is declared an enemy of the United States there is no question of arrest, charge and trial. They are killed by a drone missile strike, personally authorised by the President.In 2013 President Obama announced that «the United States will use lethal force only against a target that poses a continuing, imminent threat to US persons». He stressed that there must be «near certainty that non-combatants will not be injured or killed», and that «the United States respects national sovereignty and international law».

Does Mr. Brian Cloughley have any opinion as to why his "friends in the Paki Fauj generally, and the ISI specifically did not come clean on the Mullah Omar Affair and the rampant torture and killing of Baloch civilians in the "hidden" civil war in Balochistan !

Three weeks after the drone murder of Azam the taxi driver there was a massacre of 49 people in the US city of Orlando. It was horrible. Much (but far from all) of the world was aghast, and there was emotion displayed in Europe and North America,...

Western governments are highly selective in displaying disapproval and grief following killings, be they mass or individual. It could hardly be expected that the US assassination of a Pakistani taxi driver would attract the slightest sympathy or censure.The murder-by-drone of taxi driver Azam by the Pentagon’s video-game missile managers could be well summed up by Hillary Clinton’s happy rejoicing about the murder of President Gaddafi during the US-NATO blitz on Libya, when she laughingly declared that «We came. We saw. He died».

And thinking about the future... Would you be surprised if in twenty years or so one of the children of taxi driver Azam were to take up a gun and kill Americans?

Pakistani Man Arrested For Blasphemy After Selling Shoes With Hindu Symbol

Pakistani police have arrested a man under the majority-Muslim country's strict blasphemy laws for selling shoes with a sacred Hindu symbol.
District Police Chief Farrukh Ali said the shopkeeper, Jahanzaib Khaskhili, was arrested on June 20 in the southern town of Tando Adam.
Ali said the shoes, emblazoned with a symbol for the sacred Hindu syllable Om, were confiscated.
If convicted, the shopkeeper faces a maximum punishment of 10 years in prison.

Remains to be seen, if this is a "serious arrest" to show the world that Pakistan is concerned about minority rights or since public memory is short, the culprit will be "let go", after a light slap on the wrist, so he can celebrate Eid with his family ! My bets are on the latter option !

1,100km trench built alongside Pak-Afghan border in Balochistan

ISLAMABAD:
After about three years of constant efforts, Pakistan has ultimately completed the construction of a massive trench in Balochistan alongside its porous border with Afghanistan to keep separatists, smugglers and militants from sneaking into the country.
“Excavation work on several-hundred-kilometre-long trench on Chaman-Kandhar border has been completed,” Deputy Commissioner Chaman Khuda-e-Dad Aga told The Express Tribune.

Hope that the Afghan Govt is aware of these illegal actions ! someone should provide the Afghan Govt with satellite photos!

The strategic project of 1,100-kilometre-long trench with the cost of Rs14 billion was initiated along Pak-Afghan border in Balochistan by Frontier Corps in 2013.

The 11-foot-deep and 14-foot-wide ditch on the entire stretch of the border is contributing in efforts by the security forces to have a proper border management, an official of the provincial Home Department said.

So, inspite of the disputed nature of the Durand Line, Pak Fauj is bent on making it legitimate !

Definitely will impede vehicles from driving over (most probably driving on vehicles is the feasible way to cross what looks like desert on both sides). Determined abduls can still climb down and back up. I think this is more of a way to prevent smuggling/border transit of goods and to allow them only through checkpoints rather than to avoid abduls on foot from crossing over. Also to construct something permanent to mark the durand line, which Pakis hope to convert to permanent border.

The way the Pakistan sponsored terror apparatus uses the citizens' rights provided in relatively free and fair democratic setups reminds me of the various "Abhays" various Asuras and Rakshasas had obtained from Bhagwan. The UN resolution on terrorism is one approach to remove the legal validity in International law for such methods, which is not getting success due to this lack of consensus.

I guess Pakis are finding it difficult to push terrorists across LoC after India fenced most of it which is why they replicated the idea on the Afghan border albeit a cheaper version of it to check infiltration.

One day in the future I will not be surprised if liberating forces find mass graves of missing Balochis in these trenches.

The terrain seems much easier to monitor than LOC. I doubt PA has anything close to CI grid over there. Looks designed to stop quick raids by Toyota pickups with RPG equipped ANA/Irregulars. Also indicates an ultra-defensive mindset on this front. A fence only inhibits entry not moving forward. A ditch puts both PA + ANA to the same disadvantage. The last time I remember seeing such ditches was in Iraq war and some TV program about IA during 1962.
