Pakistan Foreign Policy Contours: Where does the Pakistan stands ?

Confusion in Pakistan Foreign Policy
SLAMABAD, June 20 (APP): Advisor to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz on Monday said as new alignments were emerging in the regional and global arenas, the present government was pursuing a suitable foreign policy with futuristic approach.
(Dr. Sartaj Aziz is confident that mouthing Buzz Words will solve the problem!)
In Other words, Senile Aziz is admitting that Paki Foreign Policy is coming apart at the seems, that he is not up to the job, (hence he should retire to his Charsadda farm !)that Pakistan's image does not need a makeover, and there is "nothing wrong" with Pakistan's image in the world (therefore, no need to spend extra money on expensive lobbying and PR firms !)

On a side note: Is there already a functioning connection between Af and Chabahar port?
Infrastructure(Roads leading upto the border with Afghanistan) on the Iranian side is ready, IIRC.( a railway line is also being built using Indian steel).
And on the other side India has constructed the Zaranj-Delaram Highway.
Given a few more years, we can see more trade traffic from Chabahar to Afghanistan and vice versa.

Mubashir ("Islamic") Lucman Of ARY News Blamed For Amjad Sabri's Death ?

Mubashir Lucman’s reckless fanning of the flame
While mourning #AmjadSabri remember that ARY had incited religious hatred against him through its murderous campaign- Pak Media Watch
Written by Zahra Sabri Thursday, 22 May 2014 20:47

Do we need Geo to fan sectarian tensions [firqa-waariyat], as Mubashir Luqman’s show accuses, when we have Lucman himself to do it? The most horrific aspect of the anchor’s very deliberate performance on his recent show was that he showed no sense of scope in his quest for vengeance and defamation. It was not enough that he should blow a very basic issue regarding the proper etiquette of listening to qawwaali out of all proportion, and try his best to give it blasphemous colour on public television (the Lahore High Court has so far rejected his plea due to lack of evidence). He actually tried on public television to force a controversial discussion on a whole host of cultural and religious practices, with no regard for the consequences.

So, two years later, Mr. Sabri became a victim of "the ratings game" practiced between ARY (where Lucman "works" ) and GEO (where Sabri " sang ")
Making it clear that he did not object to the identity of the particular bride and groom on the morning show in which the qawwaali about Ali and Zahra’s wedding was sung, he expressed a dramatic amount of shock that the wedding of such revered and holy figures was being used as a parable for lowly mortals’ wedding. It appears that Mubashir Lucman had never before heard this famous qawwaali which is very a popular part of many weddings in our part of the world. It should be noted that despite the media’s selective promotion of a few lines of dialogue, the two eminent religious representatives on his programme – one Shi‘a and the other Sunni – were not so eager to jump on Lucman’s haraam bandwagon as they were to speak about Geo’s political role.
Mystic poetry in languages like Persian, Arabic, Punjabi, Urdu, and Sindhi is rich with such parables and metaphors involving sacred historical figures, and to declare this practice haraam would be to throw out the entire cannon of celebrated poets and manqabat and qaseeda writers. This would mean tossing revered figures such as Maulana Rumi, Shah Latif, and Mir Anis into the dustbin, as well as some of the famous jurists and theologians who composed poetry and religious treatises using similar parables and metaphors.
Thus, although Lucman himself readily declared the qawwaali to be sacrilegious( So, Lucman, on top of his anchor duties, has now also taken the role of "thakedar of Malsi"! ) [gustaakhaana] material aired by Geo and took it upon himself to imply in no uncertain terms that Islam forbade such practices. Abbas Kumaili was careful to clarify that he had heard the kalaam before and that it was not the words that were objectionable, but the setting. Hamid Raza also said that such qawwaalis were the norm, but one was supposed to sit with respect to hear them, and not indulge in fun and games during the performance.
What Lucman was effectively and rashly trying to do was push for a single, exclusionary religious position (one that is uncannily close to the Salafi position, even though he tried, as the Salafi norm is, to portray it as merely‘the correct Islam’) on public television on an extremely sensitive topic for which there are multiple interpretations based on school and sect in a diverse country such as Pakistan, where bloodshed has been seen at mazaars and Imambaras over such issues. In this entire programme, it should be observed that it was not the much-disparaged ‘ulama who were rushing to cry ‘haraam, haraam’, and calling for action to save Islam, but a non-‘aalim anchor who was pushing them.
Given Lucman’s stirring calls for action to save Islam against the internal enemy (Geo) and the external enemy (India) in the same programme, what are we to expect now? Thata band of youth should barge into any number of Shi‘a (and even quite a few Sunni) weddings to see if anyone is singing the Ali/Zahra qawwaali? And if people are found to be doing this, all the performers and female audience members with uncovered heads should be hauled to court for blasphemy? After listening to Lucman’s diatribe, should people now monitor the content of all qawwaalis played anywhere according to Lucman’s personal and dangerously broad definition of sacrilegious material, and should people proceed to disrupt such gatherings where the names of holy figures are taken to the accompaniment of the harmonium?

Television brainwashing (and that too in the name of Islam) may have led to the death of an innocent artist two years later! The Govt should be honest enough to, at least lay incitement charges, against this anchor !
Given how terrifying the allegation of blasphemy is in this country, it may have been a personal and professional necessity for Shaista Wahidi to apologise on Geo’s behalf, despite the fact that by many people’s definition, there is an increasing amount of revelry and frivolity even to the extent of ‘disrespect’ around strictly religious events on most channels during the holy months of the year. However, the issue should not rest there, especially when supposedly enlightened and rebellious, yet obviously weak-minded, political parties have decided to join the blasphemy allegation-mongering circus.
The wider journalist community needs to rally PEMRA to investigate their colleague Mubashir Lucman’s thoroughly reckless actions under the constitutional article which requires that programmes and advertisements should not contain or encourage sectarianism, with “sectarian” defined as “pertaining to, devoted to, peculiar to, or one which promotes the interest of a religious sect or sects in a bigoted or prejudicial manner.”
This is what PEMRA really needs to do, instead of pursuing a vacuous and irrelevant little morning show for something that was clearly a breach of etiquette, and in no way indicative of any real blasphemous intent. Counter-accusations of blasphemy, even if conveniently ironic and partially effective in the short run, will just extend a vicious cycle that catches more and more anchors, channels, and qawwaals in the cross-fire as we see in the situation with ARY and Amjad Sabri right now. The principle should be that blasphemy did not occur in the first place, rather than that others blasphemed too. This last is a dangerous strategy to follow in a country where‘concern’ for the proper respect due to a historical personage like Ali bin Abi Talib has already been shamelessly exploited by people and parties for their personal gain as in the tragic case of Akhtar Hameed Khan.
Instead of Malsi uniting this artificial entity, it seem that invoking the name of Religion has resulted in opening a pandora's box and dividing the people and a slippery slope, no one can predict where it will lead to .

How Could the DOJ Lose Noor Salman? (w/o Omar Mateen )

POSTED IN FULL !
Attorney General Loretta Lynch admits that Omar Mateen's wife was allowed to travel without DOJ leadership being kept apprised of when and where.
BY CounterJihad · @CounterjihadUS | June 22, 2016
The Attorney General of the United States, Loretta Lynch, admitted yesterday that she didn’t know whether Omar Mateen’s wife had left the state of Florida or not. “I believe she was going to travel,” Lynch said, before confirming that she didn’t know wife Noor Salman’s whereabouts. This comes four days after Salman apparently vanished, with her father in law telling reporters simply that “she is no longer here.” Finding out where she is has not apparently been a priority for Department of Justice (DOJ) leaders.
There are two broad ways of reading this story, both of which make the DOJ look very bad. On one reading, Noor Salman is a battered wife who has been intimidated and abused by a murderous husband. Her failure to come forward and report her husband before the Pulse nightclub attack is explained in terms of the effects of abuse and domination on the psyche. Her testimony could have saved everyone in that nightclub — even a misdemeanor conviction for domestic abuse strips one of the right to keep and bear arms under the Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968. However, on this reading we have to recognize that it’s unreasonable to expect a battered spouse to think and act with dispassionate reason.
On this reading, the reason to keep a very close eye on Mrs. Omar Mateen is that she is a witness whose life is in grave danger from the rest of Mr. Omar Mateen’s ‘wolf den’. As Reuters points out, such ‘dens’ are the norm in what we often take to be ‘lone wolf’ attacks. In this case, Omar Mateen appears to have been connected to a network of dangerous radicals. Just as he had no qualms about using and abusing her, his comrades in arms may have no qualms about ‘disappearing’ her in a permanent fashion. It would prevent her telling the FBI the rest of whatever she knows. She should be watched both because she is an important witness, and because her life is in imminent danger.
The other way of reading the story is to take a more skeptical eye of Noor Salman’s claims of abuse. She admitted helping her husband scout both the Pulse nightclub and Disney World before the attacks. She witnessed his transfer of his interest in their home to a brother-in-law. In the days before the attack her husband gave her access to his bank accounts when he hadn’t before, an odd choice for an abusive husband who wants to dominate his wife. He bought them both plane tickets to the west coast right before the attacks, suggesting he expected to survive and escape with her.
On this alternative reading, she should be watched constantly because she’s a suspect in one of the worst terror attacks ever to occur on American soil.
Salman has not been arrested, but if she had knowledge of the plot and failed to alert law enforcement, she could face criminal charges, including the intentional concealing of knowledge of a felony, aiding and abetting a crime, or even conspiracy to commit an act of terrorism, depending on her level of culpability. Federal authorities reportedly convened a grand jury in Florida on Wednesday to help investigate the shooting, and that would be a vehicle for filing federal charges against Salman.
Federal officials are apparently aware of a possible explanation for her disappearance: she may have simply gone to see her mother, who is having a difficult recovery from surgery. Nevertheless, having a plausible explanation for travel can also simply be an excuse to disappear more fully.Salman is either a battered spouse whose abuse was sufficiently severe to excuse her participation in planning homicides, or she is an accomplice to a very serious set of murders. In the one case it would be reckless for DOJ even to send the signal that they were not watching her, lest they peril her life at the hands of radicals. If in fact she is guilty, they are gambling with the hope of justice for those murdered in Orlando.
As many on BRF, have suspected that she may have been his "handler" (as an ISI and /or IS agent), then her disappearing act makes sense !

Pakistan's external debt servicing has gone from $7 billion in 2014 to $15 billion in 2016. :D

This is straight from the horse's (State Bank Of Pakistan ) mouth !

PS: These are most likely unaudited numbers, based on Lahori logic and Sialkoti statistics; If $ 15 Billion is being "openly admitted", then the World Bank and IMF audited figures are likely to be much higher

International Commission Of Jurists Slams Pakistan !

Pakistan: military justice system unjust and ineffective – new ICJ paper
The Pakistan government must stop putting civilians charged with terrorism-related offences on trial before military tribunals, said the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) in its Briefing Paper Military Injustice in Pakistan released today.
Since January 2015, when Pakistan empowered military courts to try civilians for terrorism-related offences, 11 military courts have been constituted to hear cases related to terrorism.
These 11 military courts have thus far concluded the trials of 105 people, finding the defendants guilty in 81 cases. Seventy-seven people have been sentenced to death and four have been given life sentences. At least 12 people have been hanged after trials that are grossly unfair.“There is no doubt that the Pakistan government has an obligation to protect people in Pakistan from terrorist acts, but military tribunals are not a proper or effective response to this real threat,” said Sam Zarifi, ICJ’s Asia Director.(RAA agent ?)
These tribunals are opaque and operate in violation of national and international fair trial standards, and so are not effective in providing justice, truth or even proper remedies for the victims of terrorism,” he added.
Families of 17 people convicted by military courts have alleged the convicts were denied a right to a fair trial in petitions to the Supreme Court. The Court is expected to issue rulings on the petitions imminently.
In some cases, the petitioners have alleged the convicts were subjected to enforced disappearance and torture and other ill-treatment, and in at least two cases, the petitioners have also alleged that the convicts were children under the age of 18 at the time they were arrested by law enforcement agencies.
The ICJ is not in a position to verify the authenticity of the letters, but, noting the consistency of these concerns with those expressed by the ICJ and families of people convicted by military courts, the organization calls on the Pakistan government to investigate the allegations.
The ICJ reminds that in August last year, the Supreme Court upheld the legality of the trial of civilians before military courts in contravention of long-established principles of international law and the Court’s own jurisprudence.
In this day and age the Supreme Court Judges -who are responsible to their family members for their livelihood -cannot afford the "luxury" of taking a principled stand !
The expansion of the jurisdiction of military tribunals through the amendments to the Constitution and the Pakistan Army Act were a key part of the Pakistani government’s 20-point “National Action Plan”, adopted following the horrific attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar in December 2014.
Snakes nurtured in the past coming home to bite their masters.!
The ICJ has called on the Pakistan government to roll back the system of “military injustice”, and ensure that the 21st Amendment is not extended at the expiration of the sunset clause.
The ICJ has also urged that Pakistan reinstate a moratorium on executions with a view to abolishing the death penalty in law and practice.
Will be "filed - no action necessary" in the bureaucratic corridors of Isloo

The Overlooked Threat to CPEC in Gwadar

Water shortages and the resulting local desperation could scuttle the ambitious geopolitical plan.

By Shah Meer : June 23, 2016

The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has attracted attention all over the world. Politicians and analysts say CPEC will reshape the geopolitics of the region and bring unprecedented economic development to Pakistan. For China, CPEC is a vital part of its much larger One Belt, One Road (OBOR) initiative, a game-changing project which aims to connect three continents (Asia, Europe, and Africa). It is envisioned that the corridor will bring much-needed jobs to Balochistan in Pakistan and Xinjiang in China, the provinces at either end of the corridor, which have both been rattled by a wave of insurgencies. In short, it is said to be a win-win proposition.
From the jaundiced eyes of the Paki Govt
Located on the southwestern coast of the Arabian Sea in Balochistan province, the city and district of Gwadar is the heart of the project, and logistically the main arterial link connecting the maritime silk route through the Arabian Sea to rail and road links to western China. It is the largest coastal district of Pakistan, with 600 kilometers of coastline, which makes up 55 percent of the entire coastline of the country...
But there are some problems which have been overlooked and, if not addressed, could jeopardize the whole project – such as the water crisis in Gwadar. Locals don’t have water to drink. If ordinary residents who have lived there for decades do not have clean drinking water — a scarce commodity in that part of the country because of the failure of successive regimes to address this problem — then any mega construction project is going to face a huge water-shortage problem.
This has been mentioned in other postings as well ; some press reports have stated that water is trucked in from Irani Balochistan !It seems the only viable option for dealing with the water crisis for the moment is to harness the water from the Arabian Sea through desalination plants which, although expensive, will be indispensable in supporting any credible development enterprise. The one desalination plant that exists in Gwardar, Kurwat, was intended to provide 2 million gallons of drinking water per day but it was only providing 0.3 million gallons per day during the 2015-2016 drought because of the high cost of operating the plant. Instead, people had to try to bring water tanks in at a cost of 15,000-18,000 rupees ($150-180) per tank — something most of the locals could ill afford.
Will Chini- technology solve the problem ? - Remains to be seen .
Building dams on a fast track could cater to future increased water demand. At the moment, the Ankara Dam is the only source of supply, but this dam has already reached its end and may run dry in a few years.
Like the Mangla Dam and the Tarbella Dam in the North East Of Pakistan !
Ignoring the water crisis that Gwadar is facing, Ahsan Iqbal, Pakistan’s planning minister, announced that two new dams — the Diamer-Bhasha Dam (in Gilgit Baltistan) and the Dasu Dam (in Khyber Pathunkwa) — would be built under the CPEC project. Briefing a meeting of the special committee on CPEC, the minister said that the dams would be built at a total cost of $26 billion.
26 Billion is a lot of Moolah "under the umbrella of CPEC (AKA Conning Pakistanis To Enrich China - should enter BRF lexicon as new entry !)
Balochistan continues to suffer from insurgency and political unrest; there are serious concerns about the lack of support for the project from the local people, who have always demanded that they be given rights to their own local resources.
Mariyam Suleman, a social activist and author, told me, “We faced the same issue in 2012 and now we are again going through this crisis. With hardly any support from the provincial and federal government, many people migrated to nearby places – Turbat, Uthal, and Karachi – but still I see no serious steps being taken to cope with the issue. We are on our own. I see on local news channels politicians, analysts, and other stakeholders say that CPEC will change the life standards of people. But I wonder how and when. At the moment, more than anything else, we just need the basic necessities of life.”
Which includes WATER !
Given the recent and unfolding isolation of Pakistan, CPEC is the country’s only option. A growing U.S.-India partnership and the emergence of an Indian-Iranian-Afghan nexus leave Pakistan with no choice but to fast track this vital project. It is therefore a priority that the authorities get their act together and address the key issues that would benefit everyone. Pakistan has few choices left, but also has one consolation: Its friendship with China over the decades is finally beginning to bear fruit.[
The CPEC (Conning Pakistan To Enrich China !) will take a heavy toll on the financial health of Pakistan, specially almost 100% is in the form of loans not grant, which have to be repaid with interest to the rapacious Chinese companies !

Orlando Killer, Mateen altered looks, researched anti-psychotic drugs before attack
n the morning before the massacre at Orlando’s Pulse gay nightclub, shooter Omar Mateen drastically altered his appearance, shaving his head and face, and seemed agitated and surly, said an acquaintance who saw him that day.
Mateen also talked about staying up all night to do online research into anti-psychosis medication, the acquaintance said in a interview. The acquaintance requested anonymity, saying authorities had asked him to keep quiet.
The 29-year-old gunman, who killed 49 people and wounded 53 in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, called himself an "Islamic soldier" and pledged allegiance to the Islamic State militant group before being fatally shot by police after a three-hour siege.
The FBI would not comment on the acquaintance’s remarks, but several senior U.S. sources told Reuters the investigation was moving more toward the belief that Mateen's motives were personal rather than political.
"It looks increasingly like this may have been the act of a seriously troubled individual whose personal problems dwarfed any last-minute inspiration from radical groups," said a senior U.S. official familiar with the investigation, speaking on condition of anonymity.
This "theory" does not make sense when you factor in his wife's sudden disappearance - which has been reported in another posting !
Authorities believe Mateen, a U.S. citizen of Afghan descent, was self-radicalized and acted alone in the rampage. He seems to have been a troubled youth, disciplined dozens of times in school and had his aspirations to become a policeman dashed when he was expelled from the academy.
The acquaintance, a resident at the PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, Florida, where Mateen worked as a gate security guard, said he noticed signs of deteriorating behavior a few weeks before the massacre.

He’d been real worried about whether or not he’d slipped into psychosis," the acquaintance said. “He wasn’t as friendly. He was obsessed with researching medication online.”
In the early morning, about 18 hours before the June 12 attack, the acquaintance said he drove up to the gate but Mateen was not there to open it as usual.
In a couple of minutes, he appeared, silent and with a completely transformed look - a shaved head and face, without his usual short whiskers and glasses.

When asked if he was OK, the usually polite Mateen responded: “What’s it to you, anyway?"

Is the wife out of the country? Or just out of state.

It is typical to put out that first story as sympathetic. In this case, the DV angle. This first impression has more reach than subsequent stories like her knowledge of what Mateen was up to and she driving him etc.

Is "Army Exports" (Fighting "Terrorism" Offering "Training") To Be Pakis Major Source Of Income In The Future

Czech Republic wants training of troops by Pakistan Army: ISPR

(maybe, they should appoint a full-time "roving" COAS, strictly assigned to do this kind of PR BS!)
Chief of the General Staff and Defence Minister of Czech Republic expressed on Wednesday their interest for training( diplomatic courtesy language already converted into a "contract" ) of their country’s troops by Pakistan Army, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement.

Chief of Army Staff General Army Raheel Sharif arrived in Prague on a day-long visit where he met the two top officials from the republic.
During the meeting, topics of mutual interests, military-to-military relations and defence cooperation came under discussions.
The army chief was also presented the guard of honour by the Czech troops, the military’s media wing ISPR said.
More likely he is "shopping" around for small arms, for which the Czechs are well known !

Pakistan To Borrow $500 Million More From World Bank !

Pakistan, IMF enter into $500mn agreement; Dar says deal will strengthen rupee, State Bank

At this (borrowing ) rate, they are surely heading to insolvency/ bankruptcy in the very near future; I would say that they are in the receivership stage right now, with the lenders dictating the priorities ( interest repayment, privatization of public enterprises, imposition of consumption taxes on Aam Abduls, reform of income tax collection etc ) to them !

Comedy Of "Errors" - For This Week !

And Carnival of Fools By :Najam Sethi TFT Issue: 24 Jun 2016
There’s never a dull moment in Pakistan. But even by our political standards, last week was a veritable carnival of fools.
Khawaja Asif, the defense minister, called Shirin Mazari, the PTI’s information secretary, a “tractor trolley” in parliament for constantly heckling him. He had to eat humble pie in public but remained unrepentant in private.
The "famous" Madame Jalebi" in a previous incarnation
Marvi Sirmed, a rights activist, and Senator Hafiz Hamdullah of the JUI, had a verbal spat on TV that provoked the mullah to abuse and threaten her physically.
So, the Paki " National Assembly" and the Paki National TV channels - both venues have become a "source" of entertainment for the Aam Abduls !
Nawaz Sharif, the prime minister, had heart bypass surgery in London at the Harley Street Clinic. But a couple of TV anchors wondered how heart surgery could be performed at a “clinic” instead of a “hospital”.
Some Paki Anal lists have already expressed their skepticism about the "seriousness of his heart ailment !
Ayyan Ali, the supermodel charged with currency smuggling, has accused Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, the interior minister, of contemning the Supreme Court (SC) by refusing to let her leave the country.
But Chaudhry Nisar has other fish to fry. He is busy scolding Sushma Swaraj, the Indian foreign minister, for trying to put a spoke in civil-military relations in Pakistan by alleging a rift between the government and military establishment on making peace with India. This is rich, considering that civil-military estrangement is the talk of Pakistan, and the world, not just India.
But then he is the spokesperson of the Deep State
Meanwhile, Mr Sartaj Aziz, the foreign advisor, is nursing his wounds. It seems nobody is treating him like a real foreign minister while blaming him and the Foreign Office for Pakistan’s mounting foreign policy failures. Mr Aziz has, perforce, to take responsibility for strained relations with neighbours Iran, Afghanistan, India and superpower America
What takes the cakes, however, is Mr Aziz’s explanation for the dismal state of relations with America. Mr Aziz holds Pakistan’s ex-Ambassador to the US, Husain Haqqani, responsible for single-handedly thwarting the heroic and untiring efforts of Prime Minister Sharif, COAS Sharif, Pakistan’s Foreign Office, Mr Tariq Fatemi, and our Ambassador to Washington to mend relations with America.
But then he has his " hands full" and his " mind blank" (due to his old age !)
If Mr Haqqani is such a super lobbyist, why can’t Mr Aziz bring himself to admit the error of making a traitor of him, and put him to good use working for Pakistan instead ...
Fortunately, there was one case of ascending from the ridiculous to the sublime. Asma Jehangir told the SC that the ISPR should be “monitored and regulated” because it was “allegedly maligning politicians and civilians”. But the chances of this happening are as slim as those of a snowball in hell.
From the above "show", it can be concluded that Pakistan suffers from an " image problem"

According to this (Such Gup of Hajam Sethi ), Dus Percenti is doing some juggling on his own, to line his own pocket by "pretending" to be a supporter of "Billary" Clinton's Presidential bid !

Rubbing shoulders

The late lamented Big Ben’s Hubby has arrived in LA, we hear, to attend fundraisers for Hillary Clinton’s campaign. Sources say he’s accompanied by the nephew of his buddy who’s in the slammer these days. The point of attending these fundraisers will be to rub shoulders with the high and mighty, so that a case can be made for relief from the pressure being exerted on him and his associates. Hubby is expected to attend one or both fundraisers for Hillary – the first will be a reception with Bill Clinton at the weekend where a $10,000 contribution will get the donor a photo with the former president. Early next week, there will be an evening with Hillary, where Hubby is expected to make an appearance. We hear more contributions will be the order of the day.

PS: $1000 contribution to AAZ will get the Paki donor a photo with this " one time convicted politico" ?

Per Friday Times :

Immy Decides Not To Lead A Dharna In Front Of Ganja Sharif's Palatial Residence In Raiwind !

Counter-productive

After an exhaustive discussion in The Great Khan’s den, it was decided that a march on The Man of Steel’s home outside Lahore would be counter-productive. Our mole says there was quite a debate on the issue and most of The Khan’s lieutenants felt that a “gherao” of The Man’s Raiwind estate wouldn’t go down well in this traditional society where homes and families are considered sacrosanct. Thus was the idea dropped.

Karachi: Firefighters still struggle to put out blaze at Karachi warehouse
KARACHI: Firefighters in Karachi are still striving to douse a massive blaze at a warehouse in Gulbai area on Friday evening despite a passage of over nine hours.
It was the third such fire in the port city in a single day on Friday.
Earlier, firefighters successfully brought under control two similar fires at a medicine manufacturing factory in Hawkesbay and a garment factory in the SITE area.
But 18 fire tenders and several firefighters were still trying to extinguish the flames at the warehouse storing tires at 8:00 PM.
The three incidents raised questions about the effectiveness of the fire fighting department, with reports of fire brigade personnel not reaching one spot on time. During the continuous struggle against the fire at the other spot, the fire brigade vehicles ran out of water.
According to the factory owners, a short circuit in the factory caused the blaze
According to the fire brigade officials, firefighters from around the city were called in to extinguish the third-degree fire at the Gulbai warehouse, keeping in view the intensity of the blaze.
According to the officials, gas pipeline leakages were the reason behind recurrent fires, but the exact cause of the blaze could not be confirmed.

Sunni Terrorist Fragments of Unstable Pakistan-13 June,2016

Half truth, half lies & terror

With the news of the abduction of the son of the Sindh High Court chief justice streaming in, one wonders if this was possible in a city where the state and its security apparatus had run what was declared a successful anti-terror operation. Or did the kidnapping indicate a basic flaw in planning – that while all focus was directed against a particular political party or chasing after the corruption of another, many of the terrorist forces managed to go underground and hide themselves until they could strike strategically?

Karachi was one of the promises of Zarb-e-Azab. The military operation was considered a reaction to the tragic death of 140 children in Peshawar and the terrorist attack at Karachi airport on June 9, 2014. The operation started on June 15, and was promised to be a turning point in Pakistan’s expedition against terrorism. Unlike earlier operations, such as in Swat in 2009, this one was aimed at flushing out terrorists from the entire country without exception. This was meant to impress the world as well – which complained about Pakistan’s lack of action – as it would put boots on the ground in areas like North Waziristan, where army generals had not dared to go before. Zarb-e-Azab was also meant to be a different promise, as it represented a combined approach by the military and the civilians. While the armed forces would strike against the terrorists, the civilian leadership would make a comprehensive plan to push back terrorism and radicalism, and find ways to turn societies around through the National Action Plan. Furthermore, unlike the past, there was a promise of all civil and military intelligence agencies coming together to wipe out both terror and radicalism. That is why the country’s primary counter-terrorism organization, the National Counter-terrorism Authority (NACTA), was activated.

Two years later, we continue to wonder if most of the promises were fulfilled. Indubitably, the incidence of violence has reduced. But that does not necessarily mean that the threat from terrorists and radical elements has dissipated. In any case, a quantitative approach focusing on the number of dead bodies may not have been a good criterion to measure insecurity. Senior sources in law enforcement are of the view that the state suffers from the problem of over-reporting. They say the overall loss in the past 12 years is not more than 20,000, a figure much less than the claim of 50,000 deaths. The point being made here is that the practice of showcasing violence during the war on terror has generated an imperfect perception and a resultant methodology that may not grasp the real nature of the threat.

This is not to argue that the military operation and the comprehensive plan is totally ineffective. Both the civil leadership and military have made certain achievements, but the problem is far from being resolved.

To look at some of the progress first, it is a fact that elements of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Lashkar-e-Jhangavi (LeJ) were fought, and some eliminated. The extra-judicial killing of terrorists, such as LeJ’s Malik Ishaq, is an evidence of that. Similarly, the civilian government managed to move forward on tricky issues such as madrassa management. Although it has not announced been yet, there is a fair amount of consensus between the state and the five madrassa boards to modernize religious seminaries and their registration process. Officers at NACTA were also of the view that there were on-going negotiations to ensure that madrassas only catered to the local population in their areas.

Then, there are figures of religious clerics being taken to task for misuse of speakers and people being arrested for distributing hate literature or inciting violence. Yet we seem to be far from fulfilling the objectives that would allow the army chief to pull back his troops at the end of 2016, because we still do not have a plan to fight terror.

There are two major issues worth noticing. First, counter-terrorism will not work effectively until it is accompanied by counter radicalism. I remember a conversation with a senior official of NACTA who seemed in a hurry to undertake counter-radicalism. His idea was to encourage cultural festivals around the country. Even foreign donors are happy to give money for de-radicalization. That may have forced the interior ministry to compel the counter-terrorism authority to work on generating an alternative narrative. That means presenting a less violent version of Islam – an activity that is as difficult as finding a needle in a haystack. This is not because an alternative narrative cannot be found, but because it would take years of dialogue between scholars and within Muslim communities until the development of a consensus. The NACTA official I spoke to was very disappointed when informed that fighting radicalization was not possible without making basic changes in the curriculum, teaching a different version of history and de-linking radicalism from the popular version of nationalism. Politically, de-radicalization has only taken the shape of a competition amongst provincial governments. They issue orders and acts aiming at overall de-radicalization and improvement of governance, with little ability to implement them. In short, we are miles away from de-radicalizing.

But the actions to fight terrorism also need a close re-examination. Despite the perception of reduced violence, we are not close to overcoming the bad Taliban, because it remains a gigantic task to separate the good from the bad. While the army chief travels to Qatar to discuss the role of a Taliban office in the country, and we urge Kabul to hold talks with these warriors, it undermines the possibility of completely cleaning the mess inside Pakistan. The continued presence of the Quetta Shura on our soil indicates a strategy that may have short-term external benefits but is likely to prove costly for Pakistan, as had happened in the past.

The Afghan Taliban, whom the Pakistani security establishment is close to because of its own strategic objectives, tend to strengthen the presence of other Taliban factions. And then there are Pakistani jihadi groups, against whom no action was ever taken despite promises that an operation would target all violent extremists. The Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM), parts of LeJ, and Siphah Sahaba Pakistan continue to run their show in South Punjab. Instead of targeting them, an army corps conducted an operation to smoke out approximately 13 criminals from the tribal areas in Punjab.

Be it Deobandi militants, or the Ahl-e-Hadith Lashkar-e-Tayyaba and Jamaatud Dawa, such militant groups rule the roost in the plains and deserts of Punjab and Sindh. And since everyone shies away from admitting that the policy of supporting non-state proxies continues, there is no debate on the dangers or efficacy of this approach.

Meanwhile, Zarb-e-Azab is slowly transforming into a political maneuver that views corruption and lack of governance as fundamental to eradicating terrorism. What we may see is the elimination of political governments rather than radicalism or violent extremism.

Very important point!
The bearded mullah types in the west are only spilling vitriol.
The dumb inbreds, social misfits and big time failures, who think they are casanovas are the terrorists.
Any abdul, who is of military age, who thinks he is a casanova, and is dumb, a petty criminal or junkie, and not too religiously inclined is the IDEAL material for brainwashing.
The not too religiously knowledgeable part is pretty important, these guys are easier to fool & indoctrinate. They won't ask too many questions to their handler.
If handler says joo will get 72, abdul who knows kooran might say, " Kooran says raisins onlee". Handler chacha no like theej type of qwestions.
A sort of a criminal background is helpful for these guys...

IOW, most of the dumb phucks on the porky dorky forums are suspect

Beardeds Learning Yoga

Away from limelight, a Muslim spreads yoga in Pakistan
In the world of yoga, Pakistan has produced an unsung yogi: Shamshad Haider, popularly known as Yogi Haider.
In a country where Islamic rightwingers very often call the shots, Haider, 47, has quietly succeeded in attracting tens of thousands to yoga, achieving a feat that once seemed near impossible. On June 21, when the world celebrated the second International Day of Yoga, Haider did yogic asanas along with his 20,000 yoga students across Pakistan -- but minus media publicity.
IMO, the media is doing him a favor lest they be accused of "spoiling the sanctity of the "Holy" Month of Ramzan by this unIslamic practice and be held responsible for the sure "halaling" of this person (like what happened to Sabri a few days ago !)
While others around the world got plenty of publicity, Haider’s success went unnoticed.
“We are also practising in yoga in a nice way in Pakistan but without beating the drums,” the modest Haider told IANS in a telephonic interview. If Haider is to be believed, Pakistanis celebrated the International Yoga Day in almost all major towns and cities including Islamabad.
Muslims, he suggests, should do at least five minutes of meditation - a key component of yoga - after every “’Fajar Nimaz” or early morning prayer.
Namaz and Yoga a toxic combination ?
Rightwing fanatics in Pakistan insist yoga is a Hindu ritual.Among the over 50 yoga clubs in Pakistan, Haider oversees the major ones in Islamabad, Lahore and Rawalpindi. Even some Islamic clerics come to the centres to learn and practise yoga and meditation. “I have top clerics of (Islamabad) as my students. They are happy about it and they encourage others to join.”
Haider, who sports a flowing beard, is an eternal optimist. “I want yoga in every school, every community in Pakistan.”

"Globalization" having the desired effect in Pakistan ?
He says his inspiration and role model was the late S.N. Goenka, the Myanmar-born master of Vipassana meditation.
“He taught me meditation when I travelled to India. That changed my life. After that I started yoga sessions in Pakistan. He was my hero.”/quote]
Haider holds both free and paid sessions. The Pakistani government has granted him permission to hold yoga camps on its land and has also allowed him to promote yoga.
Hope in these troubled times, he is still allowed to practice his yoga sessions and is not branded a "RAA agent, or worse become a target of the radicals ! Am pretty sure he must have some "powerful patrons" on his side !

US Consul-General Massaging The Ego Of Pakistanis ?

“Democracy requires time”: An interview with US Consul General in Lahore, Zachary Harkenrider
“Overcoming energy shortage would make Pakistan one of the fastest growing economies in the world.” :((
“Zarb e Azb played pivotal role in restoring the state’s authority.” :((
“People here have outstanding work ethic and a tremendous thirst for education.” :((
“Shahbaz Sharif’s leadership is the best I have seen in my career.”
:((
Reminds me of one definition of a diplomat : " A person who lies for the benefit of his country " ; going by that definition Mr. Zachary Harkenrider should get a A+
If you look at India or any other democracy in the world, you would realize that it’s not a one-day process, they have got better at it because they kept practicing it”. These views were expressed by the US Consul General in Lahore, Mr. Zachary V. Harkenrider, in an exclusive farewell interview with Daily Pakistan.
Mr. Herkenrider is a veteran diplomat with vast experience, spanning over a decade, of working in developing countries. He came to Pakistan in July 2013 as Deputy Political Counselor at the US embassy in Islamabad and assumed charge as the Consul General, Lahore in May 2014. He will relinquish the charge as Consul General next month, ...
“During my three years stay I have seen Pak-US relationship improve steadily and move in an upward trajectory. Every relationship is subservient to national interests of the engaging parties;
back handed compliment ?
The Consul General applauded Pakistan’s resolve against terrorism and extremism and recognized the achievements in this regard. He however also cautioned against pre mature celebration
More "Mullah Mansours" will meet the same fate ?
The Consul General agreed with the point of view expressed by Pakistan’s security officials dismissing any footprints of ISIS in Pakistan, however, he warned...
Why create a "bad impression" when you are (thank God !) are going to a "non-hazardous " posting
Responding to a question about his experience of serving in Pakistan, the Consul General responded, “Before I came to Pakistan, after having served in India and Afghanistan, (So, obviously he was well briefed on the "real" situation in Pakiland) I knew of it mostly through the eyes of the Afghans and Indians which you can imagine are not always charitable or a least fully well rounded. However, I came here with an open mind and learned a lot, and most of it is extremely positive.
The Consul General also revealed that gas turbines being installed by General Electric in three LNG power plants are the most advanced and most efficient in the world, and Pakistan is the first country to have received them. He lauded Shahbaz Sharif’s negotiation skills while pointing out that he saved a lot of taxpayers’ money by negotiating very favorable terms and price with the GE.
Am sure that this "praise" also falls in the category of a "back handed compliment" to mask Shahabaz's share of " commission" for "selecting" this US supplier over non-US competitors and the C.General must have arranged the necessary financing through the US Export Import Bank !
Mr. Herkenrider expressed his regret at not being able to bring his family to Pakistan due to security reasons, “If they were here, I would have stayed for another year”, he added
So, he is happy that his "request" for an early transfer to a safe station has been accepted and he can now unite with his family !
Responding to a query regarding recognizing Pakistan as a responsible nuclear partner, he said that nuclear discussions are part of the ongoing strategic dialogues between US and Pakistan and a very important element of mutual discourse. He confessed that Pakistan has shown maturity in handling its nuclear assets in the recent past, a fact also recognized by subsequent US administrations. He also agreed that sub-continent is recognized as nuclear flash point of the world and thus US and international community is desirous of resumption of peace talks between both the countries. Commenting on India and Pakistan’s bid for Nuclear Suppliers Group’s membership, the Consul General said that NSG memberships are dealt on case to case basis, US supporting India on this matter is nothing new, in fact it dates back to 2010. “However relationships with one country really do not impact our strategic partnership with the other”, he said alluding to the perception harbored by some that on nuclear issues India is given preference.
Put very diplomatically ;
When pointed out that Iran is also part of the regional bloc but still due to lifting of partial sanctions, economic integration of the region faces hurdles, the CG said that US is committed to its deal with Iran, in case Iran fulfills its part of the bargain on nuclear issue. He also explained that there are certain sanctions on Iran which predate nuclear sanctions and relate to other matters also. He advised businesses looking to conduct business with Iran to check the status of sanctions before proceeding forward. He pointed out that some of the sanctions have been lifted, but others on certain businesses and entities imposed specifically by the US still remain, therefore, businesses should carefully choose the companies they desire to work with.
Again put very diplomatically! ;

Me thinks, raheel sharif is hitting Panic mode now.
He wants that extension, but badmash is cooling his heels far far away from raheels blood stained fingers. Now he can only get an extension if he does a coup, or gets Mamoo(n) to dismiss badmash and have Dimran take over and crown him Field Marshal.

ISPR is going on to have its paid media raise an even bigger hue and cry over Badmash's absence from the country. That harrods photo will come in very handy.

Qatar Obliges Ummah Friend Pakistan By Buying Its "Hawai Jahaaz" At Own Risk !

Qatar to add Pakistani planes to its Emiri air force

June 24, 2016 byShabina S. Khatri and Peter Kovessy

Qatar has finalized plans to buy an undisclosed number of Super Mushshak aircraft from Pakistan, the country’s news agency has announced.
The propellor planes are primarily used to train pilots as they practice flying in formation.
They also help teach them how to recover from stalls and spins and operate aircraft solely by reading its equipment, according to manufacturer Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC).
The plane is already used by other GCC states, including Saudi Arabia and Oman.
So, the gullible Arabs are easy prey for the Paki snake oil salesmen ; wonder, if these (sold ) machines are gathering dust in the Saudi and Omani desert sands for lack of pilots, spare parts, technical expertise, etc etc !
The agreement to buy the planes for an unnamed sum was signed yesterday by PAC chairman Air Vice Marshal Arshad Malik and Qatar Air Academy Commander Gen. Salem Hamid Al Nabet.Malik also met yesterday with Qatar’s Minister of State for Defense Affairs, Dr. Khalid bin Mohammed Al Attiyah, according to QNA.
So, there is a written agreement to seal the deal ; so the (Paki ) Air Vice Marshal has at least got this in writing from the Arabs, who are well known throughout the world for reneging on a deal !
Qatar had expressed interest in the aircraft in February, after the Emir attended an air demonstration by the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) at the old Doha airport.
It is "good policy" to always be on the "good side" of the Emir/ Sheikh/ Prince/ King etc etc, as all (important) decisions in Arab countries are always made strictly on subjective considerations (like "mood" of the Emir, etc ) with scant regard for objective criteria like quality, affordability, safety record of the aircraft, supplier reliability, or whether aircraft are needed or not, or whether supplier is Ummah country or not. And the Pakis are masters of this game !
The country currently has a fleet of 12 French-made Mirage 2000 planes, which analysts said were manufactured in the late 1990s and have been modified several times since.
But recently, Qatar agreed to buy 24 new Rafale fighter jets for QR27.75 billion from French aerospace firm Dassault.
Thoughts?
Reinforces comments earlier made !

PS: Hope that these machines do not end up with the Taliban Air Force ! The Qataris, known for their Islamic zeal, are "ardent supporters" of this group, and have recently allowed this "entity" to open an office in Doha !

Ummah Help On The Way For "Grieving Widow" Of Omar Mateen

Muslim Community Donates $87,000 To Family of Orlando Shooter
According to several recent reports, the Muslim community has made a donation in excess of $87,000 to the family of Orlando nightclub shooter Omar Mateen.
It’s currently unknown how the funds will be distributed, however it’s been said that the majority of the $87,000 will be allocated to Omar Mateen’s widow Noor Salman and father Seddique Mateen. Sources indicate that the remaining funds will be distributed among Omar’s siblings. Prior to distributing the donation, the Mateen family is expected to provide Omar with a ‘proper Islamic funeral’.
So, the American Muslim Community is not concerned by recent reports which have suggested that the "widow" may have been complicit in this horrific crime, and the FBI is trying to locate as she has suddenly gone " missing" !
The whereabouts of Omar Mateen’s widow Noor Salman are currently unknown and cause for controversy as rumors of her potential grand jury indictment in connection to her husband’s June 12th shooting spree circulate throughout social media and on-line news publications. It’s clear to authorities that Omar Mateen’s father Seddique Mateen, knows where Noor Salman is and has maintained contact with her since her disappearance on June 15th 2016.
And legally their hands are tied ! Unbelievable !
According to reports, the $87,000 was comprised of donations made on behalf of several Islamic Cultural Centers throughout the United States.
News of the donation has been a topic of discussion and controversy among social media users who view the near $100k donation as a blatant show of support for the killer’s actions.

Each and every masjid in USA must have 24/7 human and/or electronic surveillance !
This morning, Hamza Aadil Malak, a representative from the Islamic Cultural Center of Villa Heights, a popular Mosque located in Northern California, talked with ABC affiliate reporter Jonathan Crane in attempt to explain the sentiment behind the substantial donation.
Hamza Aadil Malak made the following statement during his interview with Crane, “Though we condemn the actions of Omar Mateen and will continue to stand with the victims of this unexpected tragedy, we must also stand with the members of our community. The family (of Omar Mateen) are unfortunately victims to this tragedy by association and the support we provide will be unwavering during this difficult time.” At this time, additional members or leaders within the Muslim community have largely declined to comment on the donation.
Good PR policy !
...many believe that the donation is a show of a support of Mateen’s decision to carry out the most devastating mass-shooting the United States has ever experienced. One social media user that identifies on Twitter as ‘Patriot_Daniel76’ posted the following comment in regards to the donation, “Seems like a payout for services rendered”.
