US pulls up Pak envoy over tweet, claims report; Islamabad says 'news baseless'

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Tuesday rejected as "baseless" media reports that the United States has reprimanded its ambassador in Washington after he tweeted an image of him and his wife with the first lady Michelle Obama.

In a statement, the Foreign Office said the media reports published regarding a letter of displeasure from the White House to Pakistan's ambassador to the US Jalil Abbas Jilani was "completely incorrect and baseless".

"No such letter from the White House has been received either in our mission in Washington or this ministry. It is nothing but a figment of the reporter's own imagination," it said.

It further said it was "unethical" on the part of the reporter, based in Washington, to have filed a "baseless story without verifying its authenticity."

In a report, Pakistani daily 'The News International' claimed that in a strongly-worded letter addressed to the ambassador, the White House criticised the actions of Pakistan's top diplomat.

Quoting sources, the paper said the official letter "showed displeasure" and accused the ambassador of breaching trust and being undiplomatic in his action.

It said the letter was sent in connection with a picture tweeted by the ambassador in May.

The tweeted image showed ambassador Jilani and his wife with the first lady, Michelle. "It was an absolute delight hosting FLOTUS at Pakistan House today," Jilani had said in his tweet.

The tweet along with the picture dispensed the impression that ambassador Jilani has close ties with America's first family, it said.

A section of the press also carried out analysis that Michelle and ambassador Jilani discussed bilateral relations.

The paper said the White House appeared disappointed by the impression that was forged and reminded in the letter that the first lady's short stopover+ at the ambassador's residence was personal and extracting any political gain out of that was unprofessional.

Michelle was invited to the ambassador's residence — otherwise known as the Pakistan House — to participate in his son's graduation party.

Ambassador Jilani's youngest son attended the same school as President Obama's daughters Malia and Sasha.

The envoy had removed the image from his twitter feed a few hours after tweeting it.

The paper also reported that when asked to comment on the incident, the ambassador in his one-liner reply termed it as "incorrect".

The Pak-US ties strained after Congressional restriction on financing of F-16 fighter jet's sale+ from Foreign Military Financing programme, due to which Pakistan could not buy the jets.

The relationship further suffered when the US carried out a drone strike in Balochistan, killing the Taliban chief, which was termed by Pakistani leadership a violation of the country's sovereignty.

Comments : Seemingly the Pak Powers that be are at loggerheads with the Jung Group.

So US is just trying to hid the truth? Michelle did meet them, and there is photographic evidence of that. So why are they making a mountain out of a mole hill? Very odd.

http://blogs.wsj.com/briefly/2016/08/30/5-criticisms-un-official-made-of-pakistan/

Criticisms UN Official Made of Pakistan

The head of the United Nations Development Program in Pakistan has delivered some frank criticisms of the way the country is run as he prepares to move on from his posting.

Marc-André Franche’s four-year tenure as UNDP country head for Pakistan ended earlier this month and in an interview published last week in the Pakistani newspaper Business Recorder, Mr. Franche is quoted as saying the country’s political and economic elites don’t do enough to help improve the lives of the poor.

The interview has sparked debate on social media about Pakistan’s development policies and was one of the top Twitter trends in the country Tuesday. Many said Mr. Franche’s comments were a wake-up call to the government and Pakistan’s political and economic elites.

1 Pakistan's Progress on Development Isn't Fast Enough

Mr. Franche is quoted as saying he is frustrated that a country full of “capable and intelligent” people isn’t making more progress on reducing poverty and modernizing the state. “The fact that even in 2016, Pakistan has 38% poverty; it has districts that live like sub-Saharan Africa; that the basic human rights of minorities, women and the people of FATA [tribal regions in the northwest] are not respected; that this country has not been able to get its act together and hold a census; or that it has not been able to push for reforms in FATA, an area that is institutionally living in 17th century. It is extremely preoccupying,” he said.

2 The Country's Political Class 'Uses Its Power to Enrich Itself'

The UNDP official said the country’s elites needed to change their lives to help Pakistan. “You cannot have a political class in this country that uses its power to enrich itself, and to favor its friends and families. This fundamental flaw needs to be corrected if Pakistan is to transform into a modern, progressive developed country,” he is quoted as saying.

He said elites take advantage of cheap labor while partying in London, shopping in Dubai and investing in property abroad: “The elite needs to decide, do they want a country or not,” he is quoted as saying.

Mr. Franche also had a word for the propertied classes. “I have visited some very large landowners, who have exploited the land for centuries, paid nearly zero money for the water, and how they almost sometimes hold people in bondage. And then they come to the United Nations or other agencies and ask us to invest in water, sanitation, and education for the people in their district. I find that quite embarrassing,” he is quoted as sayin(Birkin Beggars)

3 Local Governments Need Real Power

Mr. Franche said provincial governments in Pakistan don’t have enough power. “Only KP [the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province] has a decent law that gives real power and real money to the local government. Local government does not mean that you just elect them and deny them fiscal resources or power,” he said.

4 Pakistan's Media Is 'Manipulated'

He also said the media should be one of the pillars of democracy, but “unfortunately, the level of dependence of the government on military authorities, and the degree by which a lot of media in this country is manipulated by powerful sources, are sources of erosion of democracy and erosion of the institutions that are the foundations of this country.”

5 Country Needs More Opportunities

“The apartheid of opportunities in Pakistan is horrible, which is why so many young people are trying to leave the country,” Mr. Franche is quoted as saying.

Pakistan will not be able to survive with gated communities(Bahria Towns) where you are completely isolated from the societies, where you are creating ghettos at one end and big huge malls(Centarus) for the rich at the other end. It is not the kind of society you want your kids to live in.”

Pak bans entry of Afghans having Indian visa on passport
Slapping fresh sanctions on Afghan nationals, Pakistan has now banned entry for Afghans having an Indian visa in their passports.
Director of Hamid Karzai International Airport, Mohammad Asif Jabbarkhail said on Tuesday that over the past few days, Pakistan has deported or banned entry to at least 10 Afghans after finding Indian visas in their passports, reports Tolo News.
Responding to this new sanction, Afghanistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said the decision is unacceptable and that Kabul has resumed negotiations with Islamabad to resolve the issue.
“It is a disputed issue, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs conducts discussions with Pakistan officials to resolve the problems of our citizens,” said MoFA spokesman Ahmad Shekib Mustaghni.....

India, US Reach ‘Meeting of Minds’ on Terrorism and Pakistan, Says Sushma Swaraj
Both countries also announced they will resume their stalled trilateral meeting with Afghanistan – just as Kabul is expressing growing frustration over Pakistan failing to act against the Taliban.
New Delhi: In the midst of strained ties between New Delhi and Islamabad, India and the United States have apparently reached a “meeting of minds” on assailing double standards on fighting terrorism and the need for Pakistan to uproot the terror infrastructure on its soil.
Both countries also announced that they will resume their stalled trilateral meeting with Afghanistan next month – just as the Afghan government has increasingly expressed frustration over Pakistan failing to stop the Taliban from crossing the Durand line.
“Secretary (of state John) Kerry and I discussed at length the issue of terrorism, which is the key challenge to the international community, and the foremost threat to international peace and security. I am happy to note that there was a “meeting of minds” on this issue. I briefed Secretary Kerry on the continuing problem of cross-border terrorism that India and the larger region faces from Pakistan,” external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj said at a joint press interaction at the end of the India-US Strategic and Commercial dialogue here on Tuesday.
This is the second edition of the broadened version of annual strategic dialogue which began in 2011. Kerry and Swaraj were joined at the table by their colleagues looking after trade – minister of state for commerce Nirmala Sitharaman and US commerce secretary Penny Pritzker.
New agreements on defence, cyber
The meeting took place a day after India finally signed a controversial ‘foundational’ defence pact with the US – the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement (LEMOA) – in Washington during the visit of Indian defence minister Manohar Parrikar. The pact will allow the US military to easily access India’s installations and bases under a set of predetermined category of circumstances, granting the Indian military reciprocal rights. While both New Delhi and Washington have sought not to highlight LEMOA, it is being seen in China and Pakistan – and by domestic critics of the Modi government – as yet another example of India getting into a tighter American embrace.
India and the US have also concluded a “Framework for the India-US Cyber Relationship”, which Swaraj noted was “the first of its kind both for India and the US, with any other country”. The framework agreement was to have been released during the Prime Minister’s June visit to US, but instead a factsheet was issued at that time, which has the same text as the final pact. The intensity of these diplomatic engagements are a marker of the run-up to the last official meeting between President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G-20 summit in Guanzhou, China on September 4-5....

I think he pays and i bet he can pay 5 times of that as 40k per year is peanuts for ppl like Jilani. Their single shopping trip itself will go into hundreds of thousands of $$$. But you never know. he might be getting diplomatic allowances from paki govt.

Looking at the article posted by Atmavik above - it is simple. The man is a landowner cum politician, Development funds from lenders go into bank accounts which are in control of the local politician/minister/landwoner. From here it goes for family expenses

All India Radio to start programmes in Balochi language
Public broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) is planning to focus on its news service in Baluchi language, a move which comes days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged concerns about the condition of people in Balochistan in Pakistan.

AIR launching Baloch language programme is further indication that this is an all out well thought out strategy - and not mere lip service.

All India Radio goes beyond Baloch, can now be heard in parts of Pakistan - PTI

We should help Afghanistan set up a few radio transmitters near its Pak borders and we must supply part of the programming. This would cover both Blaoch & Pashto speaking groups.

All India Radio (AIR) programmes can now be heard in regions of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) as well as in other parts+ of the neighbouring country.

The development comes after the Centre boosted the signal capacity of AIR transmission by installing a new 300 KV Digital Radio Mondial (DRM) transmitter in Jammu, official sources said on Wednesday.

The range of programmes transmitted from Jammu station of AIR can now be heard beyond and areas of Pakistan's Punjab province
, they said.

With the introduction of DRM transmission, the sound waves are loud, steady and uniform, without missing gaps due to absence of disruption of signal, the sources said.

The programmes aired from Radio Kashmir Jammu station of All India Radio are now flawlessly audible across PoK and beyond. As a result, not only Radio Kashmir Jammu is widely heard in PoK but is also becoming increasingly popular with each passing day, they said.

Another remarkable headway in expanding radio reach is the decision for setting up an AIR station at Udhampur which had been a long pending demand for several decades.

The radio station at Udhampur will have a transmission range of 55 kms aerial radius with a terrestrial range even longer and the sound waves from this station will also be accessible in PoK, the sources said.

The land for setting up the station has been identified by Udhampur district administration in the vicinity of the city and formalities for the transfer and acquisition of land will be taken up soon, they said.

The setting up of a studio at Udhampur Radio Station will also be done by the Centre and AIR, the sources said.

The transmitter at Bhaderwah Radio Station in Jammu & Kashmir has already been upgraded on public demand and a high power transmitter is in the process of being installed at Patnitop for smooth onward transmission of radio signals in the entire region falling in Udhampur and erstwhile Doda districts, they said.

This was the most notable change that the Pakistanis are feeling painful after the change two years back. They can no longer do something and get away with it as they are used to for the last 70 years (or even more).

PoK would have been ours if we opted for military solution: IAF chief Arup Raha
Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha on Thursday rued that air power had not been fully utilised by the Indian government till the 1971 war and indicated that PoK would have been India's had the country gone for a military solution rather than taking a "moral high ground".

In unusually candid remarks, the Air Force chief termed Pakistani-occupied Kashmir as a "thorn in our flesh" and said India did not follow a "pragmatic approach" to security needs. He said India's security environment is vitiated and aerospace power, as part of the military power, would be required to deter a conflict in the region and also ensure peace and tranquillity. "Our foreign policy was enshrined in the charter of the UN, charter of the Non-Alignment Movement as well as Pancsheel doctrine.

He said when hordes of raiders attacked Jammu and Kashmir in 1947, it was the transport planes of the IAF which helped Indian soldiers and equipment to reach the battleground. "And when a military solution was in sight, taking moral high ground, I think we went to UN for a peaceful solution to this problem. The problem still continues. PoK remains a thorn in our flesh today," he said.

Raha said that in 1962, air power went under-utilised because of the fear of a skirmish.

"In 1965 conflict, we did not use air power against East Pakistan because of political reasons despite Pakistani Air Force operating from East Pakistan attacking our air bases, infrastructure, aircraft on ground. We had severe setbacks but we never retaliated," he rued.

SSridhar Ji :

Whilst Cwapistan frequently practices its Tit in India by perpetrating Terrorism in India it has no grounds to complain about India’s Tat to counter Cwapistani Tit and stop any further Dialogue with Cwapistan until Cwapistan stops Perpetrating Terrorism in India. India must stipulate a Five to Ten Years Period of being free of "Cwapistani or its Allies" Perpetrating Terrorism in India in order to start a Dialogue in other Spheres.

Pakistan media reports that the country's Electronic Media Regulatory Authority has banned Indian TV Channels through DTH services.

Kashi :

India must retaliate by also banning all Cwapistani Artists from Acting, Singing or any other Performances in India. SEND THEM BACK!

This was the most notable change that the Pakistanis are feeling painful after the change two years back. They can no longer do something and get away with it as they are used to for the last 70 years (or even more).

The Bakis are really some specimens. This editorial freely admits that in their opinion, all that India is doing is paying the Bakis back in their own coin. How dare we!

I believe economic distancing is happening in bits- India is focussing on bilaterals with neighbours outside the SAARC framework, Chabahar port will do away with the necessity of Paki corridor for trade with Afghanistan. Already, Baki players are excluded from IPL. Baki artists in India is small change in comparison, a tattered fig leaf for the Bakis to hold on to.

Hate seeing paki actors in bollywood movie. Have stopped seeing bollywood movies itself. Hope GoI uses this as an excuse and bans them along with PIA.

All Pakistanis working in India should to told to return back to Pakistan and spread secularism that they learned in India. Soon they will be as affluent as India, and there would be no reason for them to come here.

Publisher of the Pakistan Observer, the news paper that is credited for the inclusion of the term “Earth-e-shaster” in the BRF Dictionary, passes on:

Pakistan Observer publisher Zahid Malik passes away

Incidentally has the BRF Dictionary met its 72 in the great corruption of the BR forum? I could not find it.

For several decades  ? Timely administrative activities would have helped the country long ago. Right from basic needs to strategic security there have been lapses. Just tightening screws and working with goals/focus would have bettered India long time.

probably SW... They can't block radio waves

Jimble. You broadcast your content on the same wavelength at the same time. Ruskie tried this with CIA's Radio Svaboda.

'War against terror cost Pakistan $107bn': DG ISPR Asim Bajwa briefs on progress under Operation Zarb-i-Azb
Paki Math Yaan Meth Calculation

RAW-AL-PINDI: Director-General (DG) Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Asim Bajwa on Thursday gave an exhaustive rundown of progress made during Operation Zarb-i-Azb.The Army killed 900 terrorists during the Khyber operation, Bajwa said, and dismantled the network of terrorists that was threatening areas in the immediate surroundings, such as Peshawar."We started operations in Shawal, where all the terrorists from North Waziristan went. It was their last stronghold and they had nowhere to go after that. The operation went well and we cleared every village, every house, every school and every mosque in Shawal.""Shawal is like Switzerland now," Bajwa claimed. "The residents are slowly returning, but they want the Army to stay on and provide stability and revive the economy. Pine nuts are grown in great quantities there. Terrorists were selling them to fund themselves, but now the locals will benefit.""Terrorists were frustrated at the time with all the Intelligence-based Operations (IBOs) going on and tried to change hats. The core group had 20-25 people," he said. These people were responsible for the attacks on the Faisalabad Dunya office, Lahore Din News office, Express News Sargodha office, and ARY News Islamabad office, he said."Lots of terrorists who crossed into neighbouring districts in eastern Afghanistan have built concentration camps."
The entire nation has borne the cost of the war against terrorism, which tallied up to $106.9 billion, Bajwa said.During Operation Zarb-i-Azb, 536 soldiers were killed and 2,272 were injured, Bajwa said, whereas 3,500 terrorists were killed. ( This is about 30 Million $ per p-terrorist)^Responding to a question about Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain's anti-Pakistan statements, Bajwa termed Hussain a foreigner residing 5,000km away from Pakistan."It is unacceptable for every Pakistani if Altaf Hussain raises anti-Pakistan slogans. The government is already taking action on this issue."There has been lots of action on the ground against his incitement to violence. People have been caught and action taken... Everything is before you," Bajwa said.
