Police etc are not dumb, they have been videotaping protests and stone pelting for years. Which is why any picture you see of stone pelters show most of them with their faces covered. Not much that a drone will add, for that purpose.

However a network of drones could be invaluable in providing early warning of riots/rioters/stone pelters etc assembling, and also be useful in the CT grid obviously.

Drones will be very helpful with encounters also.
With their FLIRs they can hunt pigs in the forests too.

Independence Day: Most remain seated while national anthem played in J&K

SRINAGAR: The main Independence Day function at the Bakshi stadium here saw most of the people in the general stands remain seated when the national anthem was played soon after Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti unfurled the tricolour.
However, people sitting in the VIP enclosure, including high court judges, MLAs, MLCs, bureaucrats and office bearers of political parties, stood up to pay their respect to the national anthem.

Wonder how many of the original 200 remain from start of "op all clear" ?

All the reactionists are basing their argument on what Modiji said in speech 'na goli se na gaali se'. I mean its quite an obvious thing to say for Modiji.

But in the hindsight, pigs are getting killed on routine basis in valley, debate around 35a/370 has been initiated. So this double speek is good IMO :)

And this snake is apparently one of the 'moderate' Kashmiris yet makes such threats with impunity.

National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah warns of 'uprising' if Article 35A is axed in Jammu and Kashmir

Speaking to the media at his residence after a meeting of Opposition leaders, he said: "When it will come to that decision, you will see this mass rising. Don't forget when the Amaranth land row happened in 2008, people rose overnight.

"Abrogation of Article 35A will lead to a far greater revolt. I wonder if the government will be able to hold that."

“The BJP stand on Article 370 and Article 35 A is very clear and we still stick to our stand,’’ Singh told reporters after the Independence Day parade. “If people of Jammu & Kashmir give us 44 plus seats in the legislative assembly, we will take a call. But today, the government is sticking to the Agenda of Alliance in which we have agreed to maintain status quo on constitutional provisions,’’ he said.

In other words he means they will never take this call. I mean what are the odds on the BJP ever winning a majority in the J&K Legislative Assembly on its own?

Yes, the BJP is never going to win 44 plus seats. It is either double speak or they have gone senile. But they may be waiting for a favorable court decision as an escape route.

It means they are not taking the call today.
In politics there is nothing permanent.

The push/activity related to 370 and 35A will come from different angle - not from state BJP. At least thats my reading.

It means people like Fai and random academics can not drum up support for 'Kashmir azadi' and have any contact with Hizbul types any more. It will take time to show real effect on the narrative in western editorial rooms, but it will happen for sure.

I don't think so. It may be only temporary due to Trump. The supporters don't directly support the terrorists. It is indirect. What will happen is that if Trump stays for 4-8 years it provides you a window in Kashmir to do things.

Fai was released from jail after pleading guilty .
https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/virginia ... s-lobbying

His KAC is shut down, however, and its links to the ISI blown wide open. His key associates, such as the orthopedic surgeon Abdul Razaq of La Plata, MD, continue to serve time.
https://www.justice.gov/usao-edva/pr/or ... deductions

Everything he does, and everyone he knows, remains on the FBI and the Dept. of Justice scanner. Unless a truly motivated anti-India, pro-Pakistani administration wins the White House at some time in future, he will never be able to operate his ISI-sponsored network (or anything like it) again.

So, no, not back in business.

He is just keeping low and gone legal after being released. The last I read about him was a demo organized during Modi's visit. I believe he and others also met Nawaz and urged him to bring up K issue. His network is still there. He will keep low as long as Trump is in office. But there are still many cold war warriors in US establishment who think Pak and their agents are assets and K issue is to be negotiated under duress. Credit for this FTO should go to Trump.

Fai is and will keep low (compared to the level of his activity pre-2011) because he is on the FBI and DOJ radar screens as a hostile foreign agent with connections to the ISI. This happened as a result of an investigation and prosecution against him conducted under the Obama administration. It will not change under any future administration unless some explicitly pro-Pakistan president (like Nixon) becomes actively involved in exonerating and empowering him by ordering the DOJ and FBI to stop monitoring him.

There is no rational basis to give the credit for any of this to Trump.

However we should credit his administration with declaring Hizbul Mujahedin a terrorist organization.

Yes, I meant the latter although it is merely cosmetic. But I feel the next 4-8 years are going to see less pressure on India due to Trump's anti-Islamist posture unlike previous admins which were either hostile like Clinton's and neither here nor there like Bush and Obama. So I am suggesting GOI to push for things to do in Kashmir within this window.

Fai was sentenced to serve two years in prison on March 30, 2012.
Abdul Razaq, the 71 yr old orthopedics surgeon was to get a maximum of 5 years - don't know how many he got, he may be out or about to get out.

Luckily all marcos reached their location safely. Commander of the team got extremely lucky when his camelback stopped a bullet. In the ambush, Indian Army lost 2 JCO’s and 6 other soldiers got injured.

So some of the army convoy ambushes werent actually random but targetting the specific targets like MARCOs etc!!

It is not happening for the first time with marcos, sometimes ago another unit of Marcos was ambushed during their first day of deployment. That day Marcos lost U.C. Panigrahi, he was shot dead by a headshot just after he left his vehicle.

CROSS POSTED FROM STFUP

Pakistan Puts Portrait Of Burhan Wani On Celebratory Train

Pakistan puts portrait of U.S. designated terrorist on celebratory train

On Wednesday the U.S. State Department designated Hizb-ul-Mujahideen as a Foreign Terrorist Organization as Pakistan celebrated the terror organization by placing a portrait of Hizb leader on a celebratory train. As part of Independence Day celebrations, Pakistan ran a special ‘Azadi’ train from Islamabad on August 12 which reached the central city of Lahore on August 16th. The ‘Azadi’ or Freedom train had floats and carriages showcasing culture and traditions of the different provinces of the country. The train also had a special carriage dedicated to Hizb-ul-Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani, who was killed last July in a gun battle with Indian forces. What kind of message is being conveyed here ?
Formed in 1989, HM is one of the largest and oldest militant groups operating in Kashmir. Hizbul Mujahideen is led by Specially Designated Global Terrorist Mohammad Yusuf Shah, also known as Syed Salahuddin. Hizbul Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for several attacks, including the April 2014, explosives attack in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, which injured 17 people. Last month, on the first anniversary of Wani’s death, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif paid tributes to the militant commander and said that his death “infused a new spirit in the struggle for freedom” in the Kashmir Valley. Pakistan Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa also praised the militant commander in a statement released through his spokesperson he said:

If something is designated a terrorist organization and the state machinery of a country (mind not the private citizen but things like putting portraits of a terrorist on a state run Trains or railway stations should qualify as an active support to a banned terrorist group and the country must be liable for it. Things like these should not just slip away.

Omar Abdullah eyeing power via Article 35 (A), says BJP

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday said that former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is trying to politicize Article 35 (A) issue to come to power.

BJP leader S. Prakash said that Abdullah is creating unwarranted noise around the provision, as the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has clarified that no proposal in this regard has been put forth in front of the Centre.

"The Prime Minister has clarified that no proposal has been put forth in front of the Government in connection with article 35 (A). Omar Abdullah is doing politics over it. It clearly shows he wants to come back in power," said Prakash.

"The father and the son duo (Farooq and Omar) are supporting the separatist elements and the divisive agenda for the last two years in the valley, but their agenda will be defeated," he added.

However, the Congress supported Omar's call for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly's special session over the issue

MUMBAI: Union finance minister Arun Jaitley on Sunday said demonetisation left Maoists in many parts of India and separatists in Jammu and Kashmir "fund starved".

He said it greatly reduced the number of protesters taking part in stone-pelting in the terror-hit state.

"Stone pelters used to gather in thousands on the streets of Kashmir before demonetisation was announced, but now not even 25 come together for such agitations," he said.

"After demonetisation, separatists in Jammu and Kashmir and also Maoists in states like Chhattisgarh have become fund starved," the minister said.

Jaitley was speaking at a function organised by Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar. He spoke on the topic 'New India Pledge'.

Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis was also present on the occasion.

Elaborating on benefits of the move to scrap high-value notes in November 2016, Jaitley said money which was earlier getting circulated outside the economy had come into the formal banking system.

On the BJP's vision of building a 'New India', he said, "We want to spend funds on defence, rural development and infrastructure."

"We should have world-class public institutions so that shameful incidents such as the Gorakhpur tragedy do not happen."

The finance minister said the Modi government was not satisfied with a 7-7.5 per cent GDP growth rate.

To accelerate the growth rate, the government would continue to take tough decisions in the interest of the nation as it had done since coming into power in 2014, he said.

Jaitley listed several achievements of the BJP-led government, which had completed three years in power.

Among them, he spoke about the GST rollout, demonetisation, the insolvency and bankruptcy code, amendment to laws related to benami transactions, fair allocation of spectrum and natural resources and double taxation avoidance treaties signed with various countries.

As Petitions Challenge Validity of Article 35-A, Key 1954 File Goes Missing

New Delhi: Union home secretary Rajiv Mehrishi has confirmed that a crucial file from 1954 that justified the insertion of Article 35-A into the Constitution has gone missing from the high-security vaults of the North Block and the government hopes to find it soon.

The admission comes amid the legal challenge on the constitutional validity of the article, which accords special rights and privileges to the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking exclusively to CNN-News18, Mehrishi though clarified that it was not the file with the legal opinion of the then Attorney General that has gone missing. “The only file which has been misplaced is the one which had the cabinet note that was put up in 1954 for constitutional amendment. We hope to locate it soon,” he said.
.
.
The amendment to article 35-A does not find any mention in the main text of Indian Constitution books in circulation in the country. Almost all publishers have included the article in the annexure and not the main text of the Constitution, a senior MHA officer pointed out.

J&K News and Discussion - 2016

In J&K, more terrorists die than are recruited

NEW DELHI: A sustained crackdown on militancy in J&K, aided by strong ground intelligence, has seen the killings of terrorists outstrip recruitment by terror groups this year, with ranks of separatists increasingly dependent on infiltration of "foreign" operatives into the state.

The infiltration from PoK and Pakistan is slightly higher with 78 terrorists sneaking into J&K till July against 123 in entire 2016 but intelligence agencies say, given the current trend, it is a matter of time before the total number of active terrorists in the Valley sees a decline.

The number of terror recruits in J&K this year, going by intelligence records, is around 71, while as many as 132 terrorists have died in security operations.

Of the 132 terrorists killed as a result of intelligence-based operations this year, 74 were foreign nationals and 58 locals. As many as 14 were top commanders of LeT, Hizbul Mujahideen or Al-Badr. These included two in the "A++ category, four in A+ category and eight in A category"".

Sources said cooperation between central and state agencies is paying off. J&K police, CRPF and Army have jointly accounted for top Hizbul Mujahideen leaders even before they could settle down to their roles as one succeeded the other. After Burhan Wani, who assumed charge of the outfit in 2014, was eliminated in an encounter on July 8, 2016, the counter-terror forces have been hot on his successor Zakir Musa's trail.
