Long ago I used to have a March Of a Nation thread to chronicle the good things that have happened to India.
While searching for stuff I found this old issue circa 1949 titled March of India that has a series of great articles by long gone writers.

Enjoy.

George Soros is making waves with his Open Society Foundations. His guru at the London School Of Economics (LSE) was Karl Popper who wrote the book"Open Society and its Enemies". This book criticizes Western Greco-Judiac political philosophy from Plato, Hegel, and Marx onwards. In 1988 the Economist asked Karl Popper to write an update of his book in an essay

https://www.economist.com/democracy-in- ... -revisited

So what drove Karl Popper is the question of who should rule the state. And he provides answers from Plato onwards.
Plato said should be ruled by the best!
Athenian democracy had local checks and balances to prevent democracy from turning into tyranny.

Now George Soros with his wealth and OSF essentially is Neo Orientalism as he decides who is a legitimate democracy despite the leaders being elected by citizens and they can defeat them in future elections if they don't deliver.
In other words, Soros replaces Athenian Democracy with the Tyranny of the Elite which is exactly what Karl Popper was afraid of.

Interesting he has to sit and critique NaMo speech and claim to find faults.
BTW in 2023 Ramachandra Guha lists ten points why India should and won't become a leading power.

Actually what I see in Europe and its probably the case across G7 too is Democracy WITH Tyranny of the Elite so that the grip of Financiers (who of course control the Media) + Elite cannot be easily challenged anymore. Its working beautifully for Massa as the QEs, Ukraine war etc show. Only a very wide popular uprising amounting to a revolution can shake it. When signs of that emerge, like Yellow Vests or Truckers Protests or Dutch Farmers protests or UK Union strikes, the Elitist Govts crush them with full violent force and without mercy.

Thats what they want to see COME BACK in India. Global Financiers controlling a colonised Indian Elite that is democratically elected so that no new "pole" emerges and India remains psychologically, economically and geo politically beholden to the west.

They have invested in cultivating Indian elite for decades for geopolitical gains, and they ran India into the ground by the 90s. Globalisation was focused on China. India liberalised and in a few years became and IT & knowledge services hub and there was renewed interest in India. It started growing and started showing promise to become the fattened cow once again. 2014 changed all that and 2019 made the west realise the holy cow is indeed juicy now but to their horror, its breaking away from the barn and wants to run free and become a tiger.

All these regime change plots are to tie India down with a democratically elected but remote controlled Elite so that it can be milked, used as a beast of burden and carved up when the time comes.

It seems to me that its not Democracy or Elite Tyranny but the establishment of a Democratically elected pliant Elite's Tyranny they are after in India too.

A tight group of financiers control the fate of many nations and the world. They have been in existence for hundreds of years. Their net worth / wealth is never reported in main stream media since they control media. The modern avatars of this tight knit group are the neocons/libs (NRao ji has written about them). The close knit finance group has sub-branches in many nations like UK/Dutchland/Germany/France/Spain/Portugal/Russia/China/MiddleEast. They operate as a law unto themselves. They are behind wars, controlled chaos in markets, media narratives, overthrow of regimes, usurping resources from the fracas and much more. They would simultaneously support opposing groups just to confuse common/aam admi. In India for example both the Brits and French/Dutch/Portuguese were funded, the winner collected the booty but the end result is that the financier gained from fight in toto. The loser would of course be in debt to the same financier. All illicit activities are funded by this group since there is money to be made by the boatload and never gets reported in formal economy. This group cultivates the usual crop of useful idiots (think of the Clintons/Bushes/Cheneys, etc.) in every nation, who toe their line and mildly profit from the endeavor. Any straying away and they are quickly ostracized/demonized. They pretend to be democracy advocates but they prefer to deal with authoritarians to rule other nations. True democracy is something they abhor. All existing democracies are really a sham democracy. India is veering to be a true democracy which they do not like one bit at all.

Petty Congress had deprived India of the services of a great officer K.S. Subrahmanyam garu

Noting that he belongs to a family of bureaucrats and that the political opportunity as a union minister came as a bolt from the blue in 2019, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday said that his father Dr K Subrahmanyam was removed as Secretary, Defence Production, by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi soon after she came back to power in 1980 and he was superseded during the Rajiv Gandhi period with someone junior to him becoming the Cabinet Secretary. ...

In our household, there was also, I won’t call it pressure, but we were all conscious of the fact that my father, who was a bureaucrat, had become a Secretary but he was removed from his secretaryship. He became, at that time, probably the youngest Secretary in the Janata government in 1979,” Jaishankar said.

“In 1980, he was Secretary, Defence Production. In 1980 when Indira Gandhi was re-elected, he was the first Secretary that she removed. And he was the most knowledgeable person everybody would say on defence,” he added.

... “But the fact was that as a person he saw his own career in bureaucracy, actually kind of stalled. And after that, he never became a Secretary again. He was superseded during the Rajiv Gandhi period for somebody junior to him who became a cabinet secretary. It was something he felt…we rarely spoke about it. So he was very, very proud when my elder brother became secretary,” said Dr Jaishankar. ...

Reflecting on the phone call from the Prime Minister inviting him to be part of the 2019 Narendra Modi-led cabinet, Jaishankar said that it did come as a surprise. “It had not crossed my mind, I don’t think it had crossed the mind of anybody else in my circle,” he said referring to his induction in the union cabinet.
...
Definitely it must be from far outside the circle.

I once argued about the long arc of Indian history.
Dynasties rose and fell and expanded and contracted. My argument was the long dynasties and powerful rulers were busily re-conquering already conquered provinces which break away during weak rulers. So the system was not stable.

However, after 1947 the Republic of India has the Constitution (authority from the people) and the resources (police and military) to ensure not break away from provinces. And hence it is stable.

In retrospect, even under weak PMs like Gujaral or MMS, there were no breakaway ideas.
So tell me how does Pak or JKLF think of Azadi?

India is indeed Akhanda Bharat. Its an ecosystem of social, economic, religious, philosophic coexistence not conquest. Breakaways have invariably happened with external influence. When India was weak and under weak leaders, it was serving interests of external entities well enough to not require a breakaway to be engineered.

When India has strong leaders and is getting stronger in the geopolitical arena, its immediately seen as a prize at best or a threat at worst and breakaways are given external support. We have become interesting enough to exploit and at the same time must not be allowed to get too strong lest the imagined threat of India becomes real.

I don't think so ramana-ji,

There's some merit in small "economy focused" states with a powerful "security/international focused" center

1. You also split the separatists and weaken their political heft e.g. if Kongu Nadu was split from TN, it would weaken the clout of the Dravidian separatists...loss of territory, loss of water, loss of natural resources, loss of economic hubs, etc.

2. Politicians in small state #1 would look for their own benefit vis-a-vis going along with separatist leaders in small state #2. For example, would the leader of Kongu Nadu want any truck with a separatist Dravidian leader in rump TN? Nope - he'd want his own political dynasty in his own fiefdom

3. Disassociation of state with language - e.g. AP and Telangana both have Telugu speakers. More cross-state marriages e.g. Agrawals from Rajasthan marrying an "Agrawal girl" from Bihar

4. With large numbers of economic hubs, we will see lots of cross-state marriages, perhaps a lot of inter-caste marriages, and frankly speaking a move towards a billion plus "Indian Hindus" rather than "Indian Tamils" or "Indian Marathis" etc.

Titash, study of long Indian history shows from janapad onwards small states can't resist invasions. Modern invasions will be by ideas.
After AP division both states don't care about what's happening to the other from a schadenfreude point of view. Earlier being joined they had to worry.

As for DMK it's a periodic aberration in TN. No need to split. By next election it will turn nationalist.

Bad idea. Number of elections and elected will multiply exponentially, corruption will skyrocket, inter-state regulations and disputes will kill any scheme the centre implements. The best case scenario painted doesn't often realise.

The current system, imperfect as it is, works fine in many aspects, everyone is used to it. No need to do a tughlak when there are better things to do.

There is a minimum critical mass of people and resources needed under any government for the rulers to acquire enough economic and military heft for effective governance and defense. Whittling down India into smaller and smaller states is a bad idea.

Land acquisition is a state subject no? Imagine building a DFC through India and the Central Govt having to deal with 50 states to get land for the project. Even today 500 km Son Nagar Bihar to Dankuni WB for the EDFC is proving a pain in the rear end with a non cooperative Jharkhand and Mamta Banerjee. What we will see is a 1335 km truncated EDFC and not a 1835 km EDFC as initially envisioned. What about Law and order State subject again, dealing with 70 states about it, especially when state govt. treat the state police as their personal goonda force, think West Bengal hahahaha.

Just non cooperation by Uddhav Thackeray for 1.73 km along the WDFC has pushed the completion off by a year and increased the cost. Imagine this problem multiplied by 10 or 15 times to build a north south road or rail corridor.

I must admit initially I thought that Desirajus argument was valid but I now realise this carpets over our problems at local body levels. Farmers committing suicide in Maharashtra has nothing to do with creating Vidarbha, it has more to do with local politicians unable to rally for their cause (they being guilty as heck with Pawarful). That argument might be valid post 2047 if and when we become developed country with diverse developed local economies. But then we should also have a more presidential central government where Khujlis and Mamtas won’t be tolerated.
I am trying to think which so called smaller states have stolen a march ? None that I can think of Kerala is a fake one anyway. Karnataka, Guj, Maha, UP are all large states

Prof Gautam Desiraju in Bharat 2.0 makes some good points which we need to consider.

Firstly I liked his strong statement that the constitution is no holy book. The current Judiciary clings to this doc very closely. I have written previously on how John Dewey from Columbia authored major portions of the Indian constitution. India needs to re-look at the constitution and adapt it to Bharat Ganaraja not some Britshit version imposed on India.

His second point on divisions of states is to be taken with some modifications. His outlining of certain areas within a state should be looked into carefully. For example his KonguNad/TN suggestion of strengthening textiles as a core competency is right on the money. Each state can take those suggestions and develop the area into world leaders. Maybe a deputy CM post can be created to manage such aspirations of the region. Actually his suggestions are geared towards reforming the IAS/IPS cadre of India, which is still pending. I am for total digitization of bureaucracy and all critical processes under the aegis of a competent BPM program. The babu clan has done nothing to improve bureaucracy and the politicos are beholden to them. Modiji has been kicking the ball on many projects (e.g. JalJivan) and having the babus scurrying to make things happen. This should be done across the board.

Lastly, I take his suggestion about re-thinking India for leadership in the world, considering how quickly the GDP is growing. This is mandatory for leadership, babus, states and lower levels. In order to get to this level everything has to be rethought afresh. Lots of work needs to be done and is not easy to hold onto leadership for a long time. Good news we have done this way back, but today's environment is a different beast altogether.

Regarding engaging Germany after German Chancellor visit:

Eurasia consists of Western Europe (France), Eastern Europe(Germany), Central Eurasia(Russia), Southern Eurasia (India), and East Asia (China).Am ignoring West Asia as it's still not clear who will lead, and India has good relations with all three corner KSA, Iran, and now Turkey.

India has good relations with France and Russia. Need to step up relations with Germany, which is a key to Russia and China.

IOW being friends with Germany helps with China.

It's like a pentagon and need to have ties with the other for corners. Can depict on an affinity diagram to make it clear.

In Germany s own diplomatic terms India does not replace China. German ties with China are on a whole different level. Btw Germany is one of the few European countries requiring transit visas for Indian citizens, not for China. They are not really a "friendly " nation but just a country with friendly ties, it's different

I remember a time in 1981 or so, when I was living in the UK, when tourist visa was introduced for Indian citizens. Before that Indians did not need a tourist visa to visit West Germany. After 1945 and the end of WWII, West Germany was bombed out, broken and destroyed. No nation in Western Europe had a liking for them. India on the other hand was newly independent and rising. They placed a lot of orders such as that in Rourkela (Steel plant) that helped the German economy. India did not have any axe to grind regarding Germany. People's China was communist and no one had anything good to say about it. German universities those days were full of courses in Indology. Come the 70s, when I was in Germany, India went protectionist and China opened up. Seeing an opportunity, Germany became more friendly towards China. Study of Chinese language and culture became popular, and many Chinese students came to study in Germany. Indology became unpopular.
Germany's attitude towards India and China reflects its mercantile nature. It lives from its exports and makes its moves accordingly. If India opens up to Germany now, and allow more imports, Germany's attitude to India will change again.

Reform in the case of civil service and judiciary involves bringing in high standards, accountability, and competence. The only way you can reform the civil services is a collapse of the economy which will happen at some point in the near future. At that point there is no choice.

About the financial chaos and transformation in the US and the World Financial Systems

We have an alternative thought on what's exactly going on with this de-dollarization move.

Most of us are thinking that US power is reducing and hence no one is really listening to the US. As a result, belligerency had set in with a dash of arrogance. The result being Saudi, Iran, Israel, Syria, and such unheard-of nations and sections are doing currency diplomacy. The most important elements of this diplomacy are trading and settling the trade in a currency that is NOT a western currency such as the dollar, euro, franc, pound, etc. We also connect the dots to what actually West did to Russia as part of sanctions such as banning swift-based exchange etc. The dots may look perfectly connected. However, correlation is not causation.

Meanwhile, the truth may be different. It may be not arrogance or belligerency. It could be a plain case of SOS (save our souls) or survival. The dollar may be coming to point of collapse via massive bank collapses in US and just at a point of being in an unusable situation. Aka worthless as a trade medium. Now the question comes what's the alternative?

The countries have to choose a currency of settlement that has a good trade balance (no trade deficit). Hence as India sells almost nothing to Russia both countries could not come up with a deal for a Rupee-Rouble settlement. Instead, the dirham of UAE is a good third-party comfort because Russia does a good commodity trade with UAE and India does with UAE. See this model as a trade mechanism to use currency as a medium of exchange.

Now expanding this model India has created so far 19 nations of exchangeability but with a specific country, the settlement can direct currency or a third country that is mutually convertible with that country's currency. Also called the Vostoro account with Indian banks. Please understand even UK, Aussies, and Germany are in the boat of such multi-currency settlement agreements.

Now comes the million dollars (maybe we should change the phrase to million rupees) question. What are USA's options? As days progress, it could end up with a massive devaluation of the dollar. It can be $1 == Rs10. Who knows? It has to massively adjust its banks and get over mass inflation for a while. Meanwhile, it also will get into this multi-currency settlement. Or as insurance, It may just do settlement only with rupees and not with Renminbi. It may be a work in progress. It needs a currency with which it has good to and fro barterable commodities or services. In addition, it has to be a nation that is not challenging it militarily. Though China fits the bill, it may have to choose India's Rupee as the only US-settling non-dollar currency. (Please understand this concept. Even the mighty US could need a currency-settling agreement. Bretton Woods is in the dustbin. The long Gulf War, the financial collapse, the pandemic, and response to Ukraine War all have weakened the dollar due to the wrong policies of the Govt and the Federal Reserve. There is no political control of the Bank. The Fed could create money but could not mandate spending cuts leading to this bloating. Banks gave out 30-year mortgages at 2% while to combat inflation Fed raised the interest rate to 6% +. IOW the banks are losing 4% on all the old mortgages. They need to renegotiate or hope in the long run things even out. But Wall Street is short-run Cookie Monster.)

This is where the talk of the Rupee becoming the Dollar's replacement is getting traction. Now in the short run, massive change will happen in India's services industry. All the Service Industry honchos in urban metros of India will face a crisis. India could face big financial implications from this coupled bomb. I don't know if the Finance Ministry and all the Industry Captains realize what's staring at them and be prepared to navigate the chasm.

One thing is for sure, the dollar's devaluation and the rapid rise of inflation in the US are given or else the entire banking will collapse. Hence the save our souls' based adjustments are occurring across the globe. Yet we are just inferring them as some geopolitical masterstrokes.

Things may come to a head because of the slow motion US debt default. The political situation doesn't look amenable to reaching a deal. Meanwhile, people are positioning for possible monetary catastrophe soon.

why is the USA is making desperate attempts to entice India into allying with the world's largest military alliance - NATO....

Does this mean the USA is seriously preparing for WWIII...

India plays a crucial role in free and open Indo Pacific. Appreciate India's effort to end War. NATO's door open in terms of engagement, should India be interested
