‘Never give up’: why the world’s struggle against polio is not over
PS - Mods, we have a Positive news thread on Bakistan, King Khan and Dlagon land... why the step-(four)fatherly treatment to UKistan? As an eight-year-old, Anita Ghai was buried neck-deep in a mud grave during a solar eclipse, while her mother was pressured to chant verses from Hindu scripture – ostensibly to cure Ghai of polio, which she had contracted at the age of two. “I still carry guilt – for what my mother had to endure because of me,” says Ghai, now 67 and a dean at Delhi’s Ambedkar University.
Such nightmares, Ghai thought, were over when in March 2014, the World Health Organization declared India – home to half of the world’s polio cases in 2009 – free from the disease. Yet, eight years later, a worrying sequence of events is playing out around the world. Pakistan has witnessed a string of fresh cases, ending a 15-month period without a single new instance of polio. The wild virus from Pakistan has led to infections in Mozambique and Malawi, previously free of the disease.

Sunak is a ferret? Truss is a budgie? Can we please stop treating voters like idiots?
Zoe Williams, Mon 22 Aug 2022
What’s the point of asking people which animal the Tory leadership candidates most remind them of – apart from trivialising their opinions?
“What animal does this politician remind you of?” “Which of these future prime ministers would you go for a drink with?” “What item of clothing is this person?” The questions posed to focus groups would really tell voters, if they cared to listen, what the so-called metropolitan elite thinks of them. That they’re idiots.
This isn’t to say that there is no point talking politics to regular people. You can learn really useful things when you actually listen, especially when multiple voices spontaneously make the same point. But the process generally lacks the trust and patience. Why wait for people to have their own ideas, when you could get to your weird destination much faster by asking which candidate’s nose looks more leaderly?
Anyway, the most recent adventure in temperature-taking was with 10 swing voters who all voted Conservative in 2019. According to the Times, Rishi Sunak reminds people of a ferret; Liz Truss is a budgie, but also a bunny rabbit and Jemima Puddle-Duck. Some of it just sounds like free association (lame duck to puddle-duck). Some comparisons sound a bit panicked, as you would be if someone asked for a quick answer to a dumb question: Sunak, what does he remind you of, with his funny pointy teeth? Er … What else has teeth? Other times, it’s just blatantly sexist: budgies, rabbits, these are no more than classic cartoon chatterers, silly aunts. All people are really saying with these comparisons is: “I prefer women when they’re not talking.”
Besides, what is a politician supposed to do with this information? So the public comes back and says you remind them of an otter; what next? Do you lean in and be more otter? Do you try to create subliminal associations with a sea lion?
The “Who would you go for a drink with?” question, known in the US as “the beer question” (here, the beer is implied) is meant to be definitive: it’s a test of likability, and whoever is most liked always wins. It is often criticised for being culturally skewed towards a drinking culture, and (in the US, at least), implicitly sexist because you’re more likely to find men in bars. A way bigger problem is, what can this possibly tell us, when you would rather die of thirst than go for a drink with any of them? Sunak edged it on this particular occasion, even though he is teetotal and more likely to buy himself a swimming pool than buy you so much as a scampi-flavoured fry, and, judging from their other, less structured answers, the panel was aware of this.

Thats as Hindu as one can get !! .. some BRFites had trouble with his hindu roots. Sunak not only professes it but lives by it. And this is itself polarizing. He is not doing this to get to be PM !! He is also painting a big target on his back for the paki vermin infesting UK
Sunak would most likely come back as chancellor even if he does not become PM
Re: Indo-UK News & Discussions- June 2017
I think this would be the worst time for Sunak to be PM, better for Liz Truss to take over while Uk economy will have some trouble.
Re: Indo-UK News & Discussions- June 2017
Sunak has always maintained that he is Hindu. His parents were from E. Africa but as the article mentions all grandparents were from Punjab - what we in Acrica called Hindu-Punjabi to differentiate from Sikh and Muslim Punjabis. All emigrated before Partition and Swahili, the lingua franca of East Africa, had no word for Pakistani when I lived there. They were all "muhindi" or "Wahindi" (plural).kit wrote: Thats as Hindu as one can get !! .. some BRFites had trouble with his hindu roots. Sunak not only professes it but lives by it. Sunak will be unlikely to serve as Chancellor if Truss is PM as she has very different policies from him eg she wants to rescind his rise in National Insurance (which supposedly pays for the NHS and State Pensions) and lower Income Taxes. Sunak points out that this will not benefit low income folk and has advocated subsidies for low income folk and pensioners. Low taxes will increase Government borrowing and kick the repayment can down the road for future generations.

Need to agree with big things: Rishi Sunak on serving in govt run by Liz Truss
Rishi Sunak, running for the Prime Minister's post in the United Kingdom, indicated that he would not serve in the government run by rival Liz Truss, if she wins.
India Today Web Desk , New Delhi, August 24, 2022
When asked if he would serve in the government run by his rival, Liz Truss, if she becomes the UK Prime Minister next month, Rishi Sunak indicated that he might not, as one needs to "agree with the big things."
The former chancellor who would likely lose the elections to the UK PM's post told BBC Radio 2, "One thing I have reflected on quite a bit being in government, in cabinet the last few years -- you really need to agree with the big things."
"Because it's tough, as I found out, when you don't and I wouldn't want to end up in a situation like that again," he said.
Reacting to reports that said Sunak has been suggested as a potential health secretary under Truss, he said, "I am not focused on all of that, and I doubt Liz is. I am not thinking about jobs for me or anyone else."

‘Curse of Heseltine’: how the wheels came off Rishi Sunak’s No 10 campaign
Aubrey Allegretti, Fri 2 Sep 2022
One of the most familiar refrains of the Conservative leadership contest was candidates earnestly inviting comparisons to Margaret Thatcher.
But after his resignation as chancellor brought down Boris Johnson’s wobbling house of cards, a Tory insider said Rishi Sunak found himself with “the curse of Heseltine hanging round his neck”.
Despite long having been talked of as a likely future prime minister, Sunak struggled to shed the parallel with the man who helped bring down Thatcher but failed in his own tilt at the top job – before coining the famous political cliche: “He who wields the knife never wears the crown.”

I don’t have much faith in her’: Truss victory fails to excite constituents
Norfolk voters represented by the incoming prime minister greet her ascendancy with little fanfare
Jessica Murray, Mon 5 Sep 2022
It was overcast in Thetford on the day the Norfolk town’s MP, Liz Truss, was announced as the new Conservative party leader, but the lights remained off in Magda Teixeira’s baby and maternity clothes shop.
“We keep the lights off as much as possible. We’re actually closing down because bills have gone up to £300 a month – we used to pay £50-£70 a month, maybe £100 in winter,” said Teixeira, 34. “On top of that, sales have gone down massively. We spend days without a customer coming in. People are scared of spending and they’re going more for secondhand.”
She said hers is one of 22 businesses she knows of in the town, the biggest in Truss’s South West Norfolk constituency, to announce closures in recent months as energy bills began climbing.
“Seeing as the town centre in her own constituency is closing down, I don’t have much faith in her as a prime minister. But I hope she proves me wrong,” said Teixeira, who runs the shop with her mother alongside a second job as a housekeeper in a local hospital.
“Now she’s prime minister, she has to remember we do pay our taxes, we do our part as citizens, we work hard. We do deserve to be treated with respect. Things are really bad at the moment.”
Truss has represented South West Norfolk for 12 years, but there was little fanfare in the town upon her appointment on Monday.
“I don’t know how people around here will feel; not many people have ever met her,” said Ian Hilton, 60, the owner of J Jones butchers on the high street (named after the butcher’s van in Dad’s Army, which was filmed in the area and is a major tourist asset).
“She’s been in here twice. She’s a nice enough lady, so I’ve only got good things to say, but we’ll have to wait and see what she’s like,” he said. “She’s not going to be around as much now as she’ll be moving to Downing Street – maybe she’ll give me the meat order.”

Liz Truss wins Tory leadership race to become Britain’s next PM
Foreign secretary defeats Rishi Sunak, winning 57.4% of Tory members’ votes to former chancellor’s 42.6%
Pippa Crerar Political editor, Mon 5 Sep 2022
Liz Truss will become Britain’s next prime minister after beating Rishi Sunak in the bitterly fought Conservative leadership contest.
The foreign secretary, who won 81,326 votes (57.4%) of Tory members to the former chancellor’s 60,399 (42.6%), takes over from Boris Johnson, who was ousted by his own MPs earlier this summer.
But the euphoria of victory will quickly give way to the hard reality of the economic challenges ahead, with the country gripped by a cost of living crisis leaving families struggling to pay their energy bills this winter.

The Convict departs in a haze of self-delusion, playing the victim card to the last
John Crace, Tue 6 Sep 2022
Them’s the breaks. This wasn’t quite the exit Boris Johnson had in mind. He had imagined three days of national mourning. Punctuated with several leaving speeches that left them laughing, left them crying. A nation prostrate with grief.
Instead he had to make do with a perfunctory 10 minutes first thing in the morning, when many people were still in bed. The only thing the day had going for it was at least the rain held off. Small mercies. Sometimes you have to learn to take what you can get.
Still, The Convict’s departure didn’t go entirely unnoticed. A large coterie of Johnson loyalists emerged from their bunker to witness the short goodbye. Even though they had only been invited to make up the numbers, they all looked thrilled to be there.
Jacob Rees-Mogg appeared with his son. Michael Fabricant appeared with his hair. Grant Shapps appeared with Michael Green. Michael Ellis appeared without his self worth. That went long ago during one of the many times he was asked to defend Johnson in the Commons. Nadine Dorries appeared with her coronet. After a nano-second’s fight with her conscience she had decided to accept a peerage and leave cabinet.
Downing Street fell silent as Johnson and Carrie, who looked as if she had just come from Coachella, came out of the front door of No 10. The Convict looked vaguely disturbed, as if he couldn’t quite believe his reckoning was finally at hand. Somehow he had clung to the hope it had all been a bad joke and that the Tory party would come to their senses and beg him to stay. His eyes darted around, searching for a saviour to rise from the streets. None came.

None came.

Queen Elizabeth-II's doctors 'concerned' for her health
Aditi Khanna, September 08, 2022
Britain's Queen Elizabeth II is under medical supervision at her Balmoral Castle residence in Scotland after doctors became "concerned" for her health, Buckingham Palace said on Thursday, as members of the royal family are gathering at the monarch's Scottish estate.
Her son and heir, Prince Charles, his wife Camilla -- Duchess of Cornwall -- and grandson Prince William travelled to Balmoral to be with her, according to their Clarence House and Kensington Palace offices.
The 96-year-old monarch is said to be "comfortable" at Balmoral, where she has been for her summer break.
"Following further evaluation this morning, the Queen's doctors are concerned for Her Majesty's health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision,” the Buckingham Palace statement said.
