Statute of limitations has passed since none of us committed Alleged-Kavanaughness :) but yes, u have a point, thx. I remember Crossette being described as a Village Idiot in one of our more inspired Letters. Did precede, hopefully, triggered, a long lull in her Delhi-based stream of wisdom.

Re.sea travel prescription, I read in one of the discourses of HH Shri Paramacharya that it stemmed from Brahmins having to ensure they don't default on their daily rituals for > 3 days when one becomes ineligible to continue as a brahmana. Thailand, Singapore etc were only 2 days journey hence okay. Nowadays, every place is okay as the only reason not to do the nithya karma is laziness.

Last I checked, the US wasn't aiding and abetting terrorist attacks inside the UK, Germany, Japan, etc. Indeed the US actually looks out for their security. Would they do that for us, even passively (by cutting off aid to Pakistan, for example)?

Ha! I used to live in Baltimore. Believe me when I tell you that American blacks are like our muslims. They go wherever they please, whenever they please. Far from living in fear, they control large swaths of US cities and it's the whites (and Asians, and Indians, and anyone else) who are afraid to be in those areas after dark. Like our muslim community, who also claim perennial victim hood even as they are the ones committing most of the violence and "hate crimes", US blacks are brazen, aggressive and generally not people whose bad side you want to be on. The idea of your typical soft white American "intimidating" blacks is hilarious to me. Oh those poor, helpless African-American men, with their superior physical strength, their penchant for violence and the seeming disregard many of them have at the spectre of going to prison. Such victims!

What fantasy you spin! Do you claim to be living in the US yourself? I'm highly dubious...

Guys, decent op-ed by Minhaz Merchant on Trump turning down ModiJi's invitation to be guest of honor at the 2019 republic day celebrations:

https://www.dailyo.in/politics/trump-tu ... 27463.html

I agree with MinhazJi for the most part, but he does not mention a few things which in my opinion I hold ModiJi at fault:

1. Along with him sucking up to Ganja only to be betrayed, ModiJi profuse sucking up to Trump was another huge mistake. I mean, one only needs room temperature IQ to realize that Trump is a pompous racist and his 'liking' of India is at best condescending patronizing towards India and Indians.

2. Trump's 'get tough' policy on TSP was only up to a point. Once again anyone with rudimentary knowledge of US foreign policy knows that: CIA/Pentagon/State dept/Think tanks set US foreign policy and president usually rubber stamps. So despite Trump's rhetoric on TSP, there was never any indication of US abandoning TSP or doing what is really necessary to make TSP behave. Institutional India TSP equal equal policy to contain India is alive and kicking. So BJP and ModiJi were bring delusional to think Trump would be any different.

3. The one thing good about Trump which ModiJi should have realize is that Trump means business. So ModiJi could have charted out a transactional relationship rather than all this feel good strategic crap. Hopefully, ModiJi pursues this transactional relationship through some give and take, and all in the background. No need for ostentatious hugs and grandiose statements.

4. All is not lost. I actually thank Trump turning down the invite is a blessing in disguise. Had he come to India and mouthed the usual platitudes and phony tough rhetoric on TSP, the dim-witted BJP and other RW morons would have gone berserk. At least now, hopefully reality dawns on them as to what Trump is really all about.

CRS, IFS has long memory. They are not fools. They are people like us.
One of the things they do is to show who is the enemy?
Had not Modi tried accommodating DT, this very forum will berate him for lost opportunities.
BTW its not racism but potential civilization competitor that drives Deep State into this hate business.
DT turning down the invite is like Obama turning down the Sochi invite.
It alerted the Russians of nefarious plans.
So expect same from DT.
its not for nothing that Modi went to Japan so soon after the Xi-Abe summit.

BTW all, please don't whine if 8 days later DT does something silly.

Does this offer make sense?

It only benefits LMT and not Boeing.
And LMT is quite well off.
So its not commercial.

So why would DT want India to buy these 100 F-16s even if IAF doesn't want them?
And what will 100 planes do to the IAF inventory of 600 planes?

It’s good for US economy , he can go out and claim Indian deal has made x number of jobs for US economy , doesn’t matter if it’s LM or Boeing benefitting

does it have to be foreign ? We can invite INA veterans/their relatives for those who have passed away as chief guests, makes a powerful gesture.

Fully agree.

On DT invite, I guess there where other invites to Republic day that were turned down.

The only thing that is different is that those back and forth happened behind the scene and in this case someone decided to go leak before anything was finalized.

This GOI has had some rather unusual leaks that I too found unpalatable like this one.

Either someone inside is trying to run the GOI down or in their over eagerness to impress GOI is making some very basic mistake.

There is another possibility where the GOI itself is unable to comprehend the impact of such public process but I doubt that.

First world problems!
Trump dont umbrella! :P

Glad the leader of the free world still carries his own umbrella!
Modi and India spared the townhall speech on why its best to carry own umbrella and leave it open when one enters door!

Or maybe he had other commitments at the time (golf maybe). Or maybe, with his plan to hold a parade in DC being a wash out, his advisers are steering him clear of anything that would revive the media narrative on national parades.

Or maybe even more likely, neither he nor his entourage wanted to inhale Delhi's January air (I remember that being a big deal when Obama was in town).

There is clearly tension between GoI and trump administration. Trump will not visit unless he has something imp to sign. He is seeing india through transactional relationship.

Since Trump has declined invite, send invitation to Hassan Rouhani or Hafiz al Assad or Erdogan. That will send a proper message to his fat pompousness.

If selecting someone closer home, maybe Sheikh Hasina.

That would be quintessential cutting your nose to spite your face.

Do we really need to have a Chief Guest at the Republic Day Parade? Perhaps in the days past when the newly independent fledgling, floundering republic was seeking approval and acceptance in a international community. Inviting a "chief guest" was more of a means to reassure ourselves.

We do not need nor seek approval from any Tom, Dick or Danny.

Hope this incident puts end to this nonsense once and for all.

The well has been poisoned.

The whole thing was not well handled at all.

Maybe, it would have been better to keep an old hand like S Jai Shankar around as counsel

Maybe invite one of our own ex PMs or even ex/current president and stick to Indian chief guests thereafter. Or perhaps Modi himself??

Good idea will be to call a bunch of leaders from a regional grouping/block's like we did with ASEAN leaders last time. We can do it with Mercosur and Eurasian custom union group.

we have already invited asean leaders, netanyahu, shinzo abe, jin ping, saudi king, UAE prince and all movers & shakers and that now reduces the list of eligible 'heads of state' invitees narrowly. Now the equivalent to Trump would be all the EU leaders together. Good luck with gathering that lot.

ok then, if you do not like the Islamists, then my preference would not be a head-of-state.

1. Hillary Clinton
2. George Soros
3. Jacob de Rothschild
4. Prince William & Harry with spouse.
5. Elon Musk
6. Jared Kushner + Ivanka
7. Henry Kissinger
