What Chinis haven't learnt from the Khan is that, Khan is really good at having allies. This includes giving money and spilling their own blood. Take the Pak example, US has given billions in aid and death of it's servicemen at hands of Pak ISI to stay in Afghan. Two completely contrary objective!

This is why despite all the anti-US talk, Pak still wants to be in the Uncle's camp. It is very profitable.

Chinis are laser focused at only making profits for themselves and consider allies as pawn for that profit. No allies, you cannot take on the Khan.

China scoffs at military content in Indo-Pacific, urges India to act independently on Huawei - ToI
Even as India and others insist that Indo-Pacific only stands for peace and security, China warned Monday against attempts to sow 'discord' in the region, saying that nobody should play into the hands of countries which were driven solely by their own strategic interests.

A member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the 13th CPPCC (Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference) National Committee and leader of a visiting Chinese delegation, Yang Yanyi, said the US and a few others had given more emphasis to the military and defence aspect of Indo-Pacific and that their narrative, unlike India's or Asean’s, was confrontational.

"Any regional initiative needs to be open, inclusive, rules based, guided by the principles of respect, sovereignty, non-interference and mutual trust. Such an attempt of deepening mistrust, miscalculation and patterns of behaviour based on zero sum game should be guarded against. Indo-Pacific should be about addressing issues like poverty alleviation and connectivity, not about creating divisions," said Yang, who is in India leading a delegation comprising officials from the Chinese foreign ministry and also strategic affairs experts.

"The rhetoric and narrative to my ears have been quite confrontational. So I would like to concur with some of the views expressed, including by Asean and also by India, that Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean region should not be viewed as contiguous, territorial spaces, but as a closely integrated and inter-connected region," added Yang, who is in India to discuss issues related to the US-China trade dispute.

Yang recalled PM Narendra Modi’s speech at the Shangri La Dialogue last year in which, while underlining the need for an open and secure Indo-Pacific, he had said Asia and the world will have a better future when India and China work together in trust and confidence, sensitive to each other's interests. In his joint press interaction with US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo last week, foreign minister S Jaishankar had sought to address some of China’s concerns when he said that the Indo-Pacific was for something, and not against somebody, and that something stood for peace, prosperity, security and rules.

Yang also expressed hope that on the contentious Huawei 5G issue India will act in its best interest 'independently' and also keeping in mind the best technology available.

"Huawei enjoys cutting edge technology and I think it will best facilitate India’s realisation of its dream of becoming a digital economy and building up competitiveness. We need to guard against the attempt of some forces in the world to monopolise science and technology. Some of them could not stomach the fact that developing countries can also excel in science and technology and innovation. They should feel a sense of shame in using state power to attack, suppress private, competitive Chinese companies," she said.

The US has pushed India to ban Huawei’s 5G operations because of security-related concerns but the Chinese giant has appealed to India to take an independent and informed decision. Modi and US President Donald Trump discussed collaboration in 5G technology for mutual benefit at their meeting in Osaka last week on the margins of G20. Trump, as foreign secretary Vijay Gokhale said, spoke about the work American companies were doing in 5G technology.

Abroad Huawei will not be far behind. Wonder if they are already doing this in some countries, with the permission of the nation's leaders and share the content with the leaders.

China Snares Tourists’ Phones in Surveillance Dragnet by Adding Secret App
Border authorities routinely install the app on the phones of people entering the Xinjiang region by land from Central Asia, gathering personal data and scanning for material considered objectionable.
BEIJING — China has turned its western region of Xinjiang into a police state with few modern parallels, employing a combination of high-tech surveillance and enormous manpower to monitor and subdue the area’s predominantly Muslim ethnic minorities.

Now, the digital dragnet is expanding beyond Xinjiang’s residents, ensnaring tourists, traders and other visitors — and digging deep into their smartphones.

A team of journalists from The New York Times and other publications examined a policing app used in the region, getting a rare look inside the intrusive technologies that China is deploying in the name of quelling Islamic radicalism and strengthening Communist Party rule in its Far West. The use of the app has not been previously reported.

China’s border authorities routinely install the app on smartphones belonging to travelers who enter Xinjiang by land from Central Asia, according to several people interviewed by the journalists who crossed the border recently and requested anonymity to avoid government retaliation. Chinese officials also installed the app on the phone of one of the journalists during a recent border crossing. Visitors were required to turn over their devices to be allowed into Xinjiang.

The app gathers personal data from phones, including text messages and contacts. It also checks whether devices are carrying pictures, videos, documents and audio files that match any of more than 73,000 items included on a list stored within the app’s code.

Those items include Islamic State publications, recordings of jihadi anthems and images of executions. But they also include material without any connection to Islamic terrorism, an indication of China’s heavy-handed approach to stopping extremist violence. There are scanned pages from an Arabic dictionary, recorded recitations of Quran verses, a photo of the Dalai Lama and even a song by a Japanese band of the earsplitting heavy-metal style known as grindcore.

“The Chinese government, both in law and practice, often conflates peaceful religious activities with terrorism,” Maya Wang, a China researcher for Human Rights Watch, said. “You can see in Xinjiang, privacy is a gateway right: Once you lose your right to privacy, you’re going to be afraid of practicing your religion, speaking what’s on your mind or even thinking your thoughts.”

The United States has condemned Beijing for the crackdown in Xinjiang, which Chinese officials defend as a nonlethal way of fighting terrorism. The region is home to many of the country’s Uighurs, a Turkic ethnic group, and the Chinese government has blamed Islamic extremism and Uighur separatism for deadly attacks on Chinese targets.

In the past few years, China has placed hundreds of thousands of Uighurs and other Muslims in re-education camps in Xinjiang. For the region’s residents, police checkpoints and surveillance cameras equipped with facial recognition technology have imbued life with a corrosive fear of acting out of turn.

With the scanning of phones at the border, the Chinese government is applying similarly invasive monitoring techniques to people who do not even live in Xinjiang or China. Beijing has said that terrorist groups use Central Asian countries as staging grounds for attacks in China.

Three people who crossed the Xinjiang land border from Kyrgyzstan in the past year said that as part of a lengthy inspection, Chinese border officials had demanded that visitors unlock and hand over their handsets and computers. On Android devices, officers installed an app called Fengcai (pronounced “FUNG-tsai”), a name that evokes bees collecting pollen.

A copy of Fengcai was examined by journalists from The New York Times; the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung; the German broadcaster NDR; The Guardian; and Motherboard, the Vice Media technology site.

One of the journalists undertook the border crossing in recent months. Holders of Chinese passports, including members of the majority Han ethnic group, had their phones checked as well, the journalist said.

Apple devices were not spared scrutiny. Visitors’ iPhones were unlocked and connected via a USB cable to a hand-held device, the journalist said. What the device did could not be determined.

The journalists also asked researchers at the Ruhr-University Bochum in Germany and the Open Technology Fund, an initiative funded by the United States government under Radio Free Asia, to analyze the code of the Android app, Fengcai. The Open Technology Fund then requested and funded an assessment of the app by Cure53, a cybersecurity company in Berlin.

The app’s simple design makes the inspection process easy for border officers to carry out. After Fengcai is installed on a phone, the researchers found, it gathers all stored text messages, call records, contacts and calendar entries, as well as information about the device itself. The app also checks the files on the phone against the list of more than 73,000 items.

This list contains only the size of each file and a code that serves as a unique signature. It does not include the files’ names or other information that would indicate what they are.

But at the journalists’ request, researchers at the Citizen Lab, an internet watchdog group based at the University of Toronto, obtained information about roughly 1,400 of the files by comparing their signatures with ones stored by VirusTotal, a malware-scanning service owned by the Google sibling company Chronicle. Additional files were identified by Vinny Troia, the founder of the cybersecurity firm NightLion Security, and York Yannikos of the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology in Darmstadt, Germany.

Most of the files that the journalists could identify were related to Islamic terrorism: Islamic State recruitment materials in several languages, books written by jihadi figures, information about how to derail trains and build homemade weapons.

Many of the files were more benign. There were audio recordings of Quran verses recited by well-known clerics, the sort of material that many practicing Muslims might have on their phones. There were books about Arabic language and grammar, and a copy of “The Syrian Jihad,” a book about the country’s civil war by the researcher Charles R. Lister.

Mr. Lister said he did not know why the Chinese authorities might consider him or his book suspicious. He speculated that it might only be because the word “jihad” was in the title.

Other files the app scans for have no link to Islam or Islamic extremism. There are writings by the Dalai Lama, whom China considers a dangerous separatist, and a photograph of him. There is a summary of “The 33 Strategies of War,” a book by the author Robert Greene on applying strategic thinking to everyday life.

“It’s a bit of a mystery to me,” Mr. Greene said, when told that his book had been flagged.

There is also, puzzlingly, an audio file of a metal song: “Cause and Effect,” by the Japanese band Unholy Grave. The reason for the song’s inclusion was not clear, and an email sent to an address on Unholy Grave’s website was not answered.

After Fengcai scans a phone, the app generates a report containing all contacts, text messages and call records, as well as lists of calendar entries and of other apps installed on the device. It sends this information to a server.

Two of the people who recently crossed the Xinjiang border said that before officials returned phones to their owners, they took photos of each owner’s passport next to his or her device, making sure that the app was visible on the screen.

This suggests that the authorities have been told to be thorough in scanning visitors’ phones, although it was not clear how they were using the information they acquired as a result. It also could not be determined whether anyone had been detained or monitored because of information generated by the app. If Fengcai remains on a person’s phone after it is installed, it does not continue scanning the device in the background, the app’s code indicates.

Officials in Xinjiang are now gathering oceans of personal information, including DNA and data about people’s movements. It would not be surprising for the Chinese authorities to want this harvesting of data to begin at the region’s borders.

China’s Ministry of Public Security and the Xinjiang regional government did not respond to faxed requests for comment.

Names that appear in Fengcai’s source code suggest that the app was made by a unit of FiberHome, a producer of optical cable and telecom equipment that is partly owned by the Chinese state. The unit, Nanjing FiberHome StarrySky Communication Development Company, says on its website that it offers products to help the police collect and analyze data, and that it has signed agreements with security authorities across China.

FiberHome and StarrySky did not respond to requests for comment.

According to StarrySky’s website, the company offers “cellphone forensic equipment,” which it says can extract, analyze and recover data from mobile phones.

On another page, StarrySky says the purpose of its “smart policing” products is “to let there be not a bad guy in the world who is hard to catch.”

Chinis (and Burmese) are the only ones taking the ultimate and possibly the only practical steps towards controlling terrorism from the religion of peace. No political correctness in their vocabulary. This will be an advantage to them as creeping Islam takes over the rest of the kaffir world.

That is Phase I.

Phase II will be rolling out the same in Mexico or Brazil. Africa is gone. Today it is the Religion of Peace, tomorrow it will be their opponents in other nations.

China has a very well-coordinated effort (see my previous post). (Tesla has agreed to start a plant in China. I am waiting to see if the Chinese insist on placing a parallel deep learning facility in China.)

the nepalese are a bankrupt nation. they use various means to crawl out to whoever will pay them - usa today, china tomorrow, japan day after tomorrow. they do things like giving out more everest permits than prudent every year, to raise cash, knowing fully well it puts all at risk of getting stuck and dying as they duly did this year.

the only language they understand is money. to call them a hindu rashtra is a travesty. poverty does not make a good bedfellow with dharma. and a streak of naxalism has deeply embedded into their shadow elites.

they must be carefully watched and managed, for starters we can exert some pressure on the duty free transit rights they get via our seaports. this was done once in 1980s. china is welcome to bear the cost of shipping their goods 5000km for free.

secondly, why should nepalese be given the free right to reside and work anywhere in india - infact all rights other than voting and I am sure millions have voter cards also ? what have they done for us lately ? this too should be made conditional and border controls start to be enforced .

good behaviour can be rewarded with carrots. but only the stupid will give carrots for free.

india can manage fine without nepal. its for them to think how to manage once we start taking away their priviledges which they have misused to spit on our face numerous times.

indisciplined kids needs a firm parent.

Neutering & Defanging Chinese Threat (15-11-2017)

Post by Peregrine »

Counter-flow

Financial links between China and America deepen, despite the trade war

The two superpowers are at each other’s necks, but also in each other’s pockets

Trade war, tech war, new cold war or just plain decoupling: call it what you will, the confrontation between America and China has been bruising. Tariffs are up, exports down. Even as they resume trade negotiations, they talk of blacklisting each other’s firms. In the words of Henry Paulson, a former American treasury secretary, the danger is that an “economic iron curtain” will soon divide the world. All the more remarkable, then, that one crucial sector—finance—is bucking the trend. Financial links between China and the West have grown tighter since the trade war broke out. They are set to grow tighter still.

For years Western insurance firms, asset managers and brokerages have been allowed to own only minority stakes in local firms. Now China is giving foreign financial firms more leeway on the mainland. Since mid-2018 they have been able to apply for 51% control. On July 2nd Li Keqiang, China’s prime minister, said that financial firms would be allowed full control by 2020.

That is not the only sense in which financiers and trade negotiators exist in parallel universes. China is also making it easier for foreigners to buy into its markets. Since the start of 2018 they have ploughed $75bn into Chinese shares. In the same period they have pulled $8bn out of all other big emerging markets. In the next decade, Goldman Sachs estimates, $1trn will enter China’s bond market from abroad, putting it among the world’s top investment destinations (see article). All this is possible because China has not stopped foreigners from cashing out, despite the strict capital controls it imposes on its own citizens. As the rules have eased, stock and bond indices that investors mirror in their portfolios, such as MSCI’s equities benchmark, have added Chinese securities.

Helping Wall Street and the City of London do more business in China is not a popular cause there or in the West, but the implications for finance are profound. Firms like Morgan Stanley, Black Rock and Schroders which have long dabbled on the mainland must now decide whether to go for it. Some worry that they lack clout and connections. Few insurers, for example, relish a brawl with China Life, a state-run behemoth with 1.7m sales agents. Foreign banks’ assets in China have soared to $650bn, but still amount to less than 2% of the country’s total.

Nonetheless a few global firms have a good chance of building large Chinese businesses. HSBC, a London-based firm with roots in Asia, already makes three-quarters of its profits from Hong Kong and China. AIA, which was spun out of AIG, an American firm, is the leader among foreign life-insurers. Western asset managers have long records and global expertise that local firms do not. Over time, as Chinese savers seek to diversify, this could help them win market share.

China needs to make this opening count. Many Wall Street bosses have gone from Sinophiles to hawks in the past few years. So, tactically, China has a chance to win brownie points with America’s business lobby. That gain could be dwarfed by the benefits within the country itself. Western firms will push up standards in its immature but giant capital markets, a priority if it is to allocate capital more efficiently and get more out of its savings. And China needs foreign funding more than in the past—its current-account surplus has dropped from 10% of GDP in 2007 to less than 1% last year. Without a steady flow of capital into the country, there could be a destabilising fall in the yuan.

Image

Some political figures in the West argue that financial links with China count as a betrayal. Steve Bannon, who was once President Donald Trump’s adviser, talks of removing Chinese companies from American stock exchanges. Marco Rubio, a hawkish Republican senator, has accused MSCI of channelling American cash to the Chinese Communist Party by including state-owned companies in its benchmarks.

In fact closer financial links could have a beneficial effect, which is why long tIme China-watchers like Mr Paulson back them so strongly. When Chinese firms have foreign shareholders or underwriters, their calculations change. They face tougher questions, as Alibaba, a Chinese e-commerce giant, is reminded on every earnings call. None of this will suddenly transform China into a free market but it will encourage its firms to be more open, to respond to market signals and to respect intellectual property. Chinese firms that use Western banks when they go abroad, as Huawei used HSBC, are less able to circumvent global rules on corruption and sanctions.

If America excludes China from the global financial system, China will eventually build an alternative to the dollar-based order that has dominated markets since 1945—which would then feed into a wider strategic rivalry. For the time being, despite the hostilities over trade and tech, China welcomes foreign investors and firms. That is to be celebrated. There is more to be gained from building connections than cutting them off.

Check my post in the chini mil thread on killer drones sold by Cheen to wealthy muslims (Saudis and UAE) to kill other muslims while at the same time putting its own muzzies into concentration camps.

That is ballsy mercantilism at its finest.

I hope they simply take over Pakiland and washes it clean of religion. Better for everyone.

If we got to live with a brutal atheist regime like the PRC then we can certainly hope its campaign against muzzies under its control can reach its logical conclusion in a Cheen-dominated Pakistan!

After the Bollywood ban, it is this in Nepal now . . .

Nepal bans Tibetans from celebrating Dalai Lama’s birthday, citing security concerns - SCMP
The Tibetan community in Nepal called off plans to mark the birthday of their spiritual leader the Dalai Lama after their request for a public celebration was rejected over security concerns, a government official said on Sunday.

The Dalai Lama turned 84 on Saturday and his followers in Nepal had hoped to celebrate the occasion in the capital, Kathmandu, but the communist government rejected their request.

China, which regards the Dalai Lama as a dangerous separatist, has been increasing its influence in the Himalayan nation that is home to about 20,000 Tibetans.

Nepal is a natural buffer between China and India and is considered by New Delhi as its natural ally, but China is also making inroads by pouring aid and infrastructure investment into what is one of the world’s 10 poorest countries.

Krishna Bahadur Katuwal, assistant district administrator of Kathmandu, said the government refused permission for Tibetans to mark the Dalai Lama’s birthday because “infiltrators” could create trouble.

“There could be a law and order problem as infiltrators could organise demonstrations or try to self-immolate,” Katuwal said.

Tibetan news portal Phayul.com said celebration plans were then withdrawn.

Airport immigration authorities in Kathmandu refused to admit a US citizen of Tibetan origin and deported him last month, reportedly at China’s request.

Nepali authorities have also previously detained Tibetans trying to cross the border on their way to India after fleeing their disputed homeland.

Human rights groups say Nepal faces intense Chinese pressure to control the flow of Tibetans crossing the border.

A chained dragon

China’s maritime expansion reflects a curious mix of ambition and paranoia

Chinese strategists urge Westerners to understand that their country’s rise as a naval power is guided in part by deep insecurity

Geographical good luck gave Wu Zhaozong a front-row seat as China opened to the world. As a boy he watched his grandfather steer a horse-drawn cart through the docks of Tianjin, on China’s northern coast. Poor neighbours, living in courtyard homes shared with four families, would follow carts to pick up horse dung and fallen coal-lumps for fuel. Coal was a Tianjin export, as was garlic for Japan. “I very rarely saw cars,” Mr Wu recalls.

Today Tianjin is one of the world’s ten busiest ports, and Mr Wu is operations director of a ship-supply company. The firm’s work includes securing giant wind turbines on ships bound for Chinese partners in Africa. Earlier this week Mr Wu gave Chaguan a lift in his BMW to Tianjin’s passenger terminal. There he oversaw crisply uniformed Filipino sailors loading fresh produce onto a cruise ship, before it carried newly affluent Chinese tourists to Japan. The changes witnessed by Mr Wu—driven by Tianjin’s location as a gateway to Beijing and other northern cities—have been both dramatic and astonishingly rapid. For Mr Wu, an amiable father of two little girls, is just 38 years old.

China was an inward-looking, continental power when Mr Wu was born. It rose in part by turning to the sea. Seven of the world’s ten largest container ports are in China. Overseas, Chinese companies had by 2018 helped build or expand 42 ports in 34 countries, often as part of the Belt and Road Initiative, a global infrastructure scheme. Chinese operators own majority stakes in foreign ports from Abu Dhabi to Zeebrugge.

Unusually in its long history, China faces no serious threat of invasion by land. Against that, its national wealth is concentrated in regions near the sea, as never before. Coastal provinces and cities account for a small fraction of its landmass, but more than half of its gdp. Unsurprisingly, China is striving to become a maritime great power. Its navy, now the largest in Asia, is tasked with defending all that coastal wealth, but also with protecting shipping lanes that carry 85% of the country’s trade in goods by volume, as well as vital energy imports. Naval might backs up territorial claims that include the island of Taiwan and almost the whole of the South China Sea. A final naval mission involves denying American warships risk-free access to seas within the “first island chain”, the archipelago that encircles China’s coastline, comprising Japan and its southern islands, Taiwan and the Philippines.

Not so long ago China called America imperialist for operating foreign military bases. In 2017 China opened an overseas naval base of its own, in the African country of Djibouti. Ostensibly commercial Chinese investments in ports around the Indian Ocean or the South Pacific now routinely trigger sharp questions from America, Australia and other Western powers with Pacific security interests, asking whether another Chinese base is about to open. In late June a senior Pentagon official wrote to Cambodia’s government to express concern that Chinese military assets might soon be welcomed at the Ream naval base, the country’s largest. Cambodia denies such plans, though it is awash with Chinese money.

Many ordinary Chinese insist that China’s only fault is to grow large enough to frighten the West. “We’re not and, in our history, have never been an aggressive country,” says Mr Wu in Tianjin, loyally, though he is sure that China will defend itself if attacked.

Hawkish Americans scoff at such assurances, which they often hear from Chinese leaders. They point to such acts as China’s construction of airbases and missile batteries on disputed reefs in the South China Sea and see aggression and swaggering confidence.

Chinese strategists urge Westerners to understand that their country’s maritime rise is also guided by deep insecurity. They call China not so much blessed by geography, as cursed. They have a point. In “Red Star over the Pacific”, an influential book on China’s maritime ambitions, Toshi Yoshihara and James Holmes, two naval scholars, note that President Dwight Eisenhower saw the first island chain as a means for America and allies to hem China in, a view shared by Chinese admirals. The book quotes a Chinese military strategist who calls Taiwan, at the chain’s centre, “a lock around the neck of a great dragon”. It describes the claustrophobia of Chinese planners when they contemplate paths to the ocean that run through narrow choke-points between South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines, or through the Strait of Malacca near Singapore. China has 14 land neighbours. America is envied for having two, friendly ones, and vast oceans to each side.

America’s geography is even luckier below the waves, argues Owen Cote of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in a new study in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. Since the cold war, he writes, America has successfully tracked foreign submarines with acoustic arrays placed where continental shelves end and deep oceans begin. Asian allies host American arrays to detect Chinese submarines heading for the ocean past Japan, Taiwan or the Philippines. Geographical constraints—such as the shallowness of Chinese inner seas—make it hard for China to build similar arrays.

Ties that bind

Hu Bo, a prominent naval strategist at Peking University, suggests that China may need perhaps two more overseas military bases between Djibouti and the South China Sea, because Djibouti would be too far from home “once we are in an emergency, say on the brink of war”. Whereas America gained many bases by fighting world wars, China must seek bases through discreet negotiations. Some might be primarily commercial in peacetime, he suggests. Increasingly, China has “huge interests overseas”. That offers avenues for co-operation with other countries, but also vulnerabilities. Mr Hu says it would be a “suicide mission” for China to take any actions that might provoke a blockade in its near seas—whether by America or other sea-powers. That is an oddly reassuring argument, at least for the rest of the world. In geopolitics, if not geography, a sense of vulnerability can be a stroke of luck.

We cannot take the words of any Chinese scholar because they are almost always deliberately misleading. Why is China then testing waters for bases in Vanuatu (Espiritu Santo island), Tonga and possibly Papua-New Guinea which would challenge the US in the Pacific ?

SSridhar Ji:

Well Sir Ji, the USA has Lorded over the World.

As far as India is concerned USA (1) Armed Terroristan against India (2) Gave 80.2% of the Indus Waters to Terroristan (3) Sent the Seventh Fleet to the Bay of Bengal in 1971 during the 1971 War Imposed on India by Terroristan (4) The USA is still providing succour to Terroristan and has generally Lorded over the world!

Trick Dick then went and Hugged and Kissed China, shifting a huge number of Industries to China etc. etc. & etc. Trump is "creating" all sorts of problems with India with Oil Sanctions, Trade, Armament with Russia etc. etc. & etc.

So China is serving Uncle Sam with the the just deserts the US richly deserves!

IMHO - at the moment - the U S A does not deserve any Favours and so let it solve its own problems with China.

Let the USA deal with its own created Frankenstein Monsters!

Bollywood Bash In Nepal Cancelled Amid Anti-India Rhetoric, And High-Stake Power Plays By China
the nepalese are a bankrupt nation. they use various means to crawl out to whoever will pay them - usa today, china tomorrow, japan day after tomorrow. they do things like giving out more everest permits than prudent every year, to raise cash, knowing fully well it puts all at risk of getting stuck and dying as they duly did this year.

the only language they understand is money. to call them a hindu rashtra is a travesty. poverty does not make a good bedfellow with dharma. and a streak of naxalism has deeply embedded into their shadow elites.

they must be carefully watched and managed, for starters we can exert some pressure on the duty free transit rights they get via our seaports. this was done once in 1980s. china is welcome to bear the cost of shipping their goods 5000km for free.

secondly, why should nepalese be given the free right to reside and work anywhere in india - infact all rights other than voting and I am sure millions have voter cards also ? what have they done for us lately ? this too should be made conditional and border controls start to be enforced .

good behaviour can be rewarded with carrots. but only the stupid will give carrots for free.

india can manage fine without nepal. its for them to think how to manage once we start taking away their priviledges which they have misused to spit on our face numerous times.

India Inc wants restricted market access for China under RCEP pact - Amiti Sen, Business Line
Negotiations for concluding the ambitious Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RECP) pact this year are in full swing, but the Indian manufacturing sector continues to be apprehensive of competition from China and is demanding higher protection.

Representatives of the Indian industry, including steel, automobile and the engineering goods sectors, have asked the government to restrict market opening offers for China under the mega trade pact between 16 nations to about 42 per cent instead of over 90 per cent being demanded by the Beijing.

“In a recent meeting with the Commerce Ministry, industry representatives said that tariff elimination on 74 per cent items for China being considered by India was too high and would make the Indian industry vulnerable. Instead, India should stick to its initial offer of 42 per cent,” an official told BusinessLine.

Not much benefit

The industry argues that since it has not benefitted much from the existing free trade pacts with the ASEAN, Japan and South Korea, there was little hope that a pact involving China, which already has a huge trade surplus with India, would be useful if most import tariffs are eliminated. In fact, the concern is that many sectors, with small-scale players, may be wiped out.

China, on the other hand, is not willing to budge from its demand that India should eliminate tariffs on over 90 per cent of goods which it is considering for most other members of the RCEP, including the 10-member ASEAN, South Korea and Japan.

India, recognising the need for continued protection of its industry, had initially offered to eliminate duties on 42 per cent of traded items for China, Australia and New Zealand — the three countries in the group with which it does not have any free trade agreement. But with all RCEP members pushing for minimal tariff barriers in the region, it has been forced to improve its offer and go up to 74 per cent.

“The Indian government realises that with the industry being so apprehensive about competition from China and demanding protection, there is little scope for raising its tariff elimination offers beyond 74 per cent of items. Although India is also negotiating for a longer time frame for implementing the tariff cuts, there is a need to protect a number of lines in both agricultural and manufacturing sectors. The negotiations are indeed poised at a difficult point for India,” the official said.

Largest trade bloc

New Delhi is also hesitant of opting out of the RCEP pact because, if concluded it would be the largest free trade bloc in the world accounting for 25 per cent of global GDP and 30 per cent of world trade. Officials from the 16- member countries met in Australia last week with the focussed objective of fast-tracking the negotiations so that the pact could be concluded this year.

So serious are the ASEAN nations in their pursuit of convincing India of respecting the year-end deadline that trade Ministers from Thailand and Indonesia and the ASEAN Secretary General may travel to India to meet Commerce & Industry Minister Piyush Goyal to discuss the matter.

I agree word-by-word with you.

USA deserves all that it is getting from China. USA is also seeking our favour etc. because it wants to contain China and retain its numero uno position. Once, it achieved that, we will be dropped like hot potatoes. It is the usual US practice, even while seeking favour from any country, to keep some issues burning (like human rights, religious freedom etc) to beat that country with in order to retain control. Not for nothing is Uncle Sam known as the most undependable ally in its play of realpolitik. IMHO, it is par for the course too. So, India must be watchful.

However, in the process, it must not get beyond a tipping point in India's own interests because China is the present, immediate and imminent danger for India. We have to calibrate our relationship extremely carefully with both. We will certainly be more inclined towards the US and less towards China.

Tanzania Suspends China-Funded $10 Billion Bagamoyo Port Project; Calls The Financing Terms ‘Exploitative’

In a major blow to Chinese President Xi Jinping's pet project Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the Government of Tanzania has suspended the construction of the $10 billion Bagamoyo port which was to be constructed with funds from China, reports Economic Times.

The project had been signed by President Jinping in March 2013. However, the newly elected Tanzanian President John Magufuli refused to move ahead with the project, calling the conditions 'exploitative' and 'awkward'.

"Chinese financiers set tough conditions that can only be accepted by mad people," said President Magufuli.

As per the agreement, the port, once built, would have been leased to China for a period of 99 years, during which Tanzania would not have had any say on who else could come and invest in the port upon its operationalisation.

The project was a major connectivity initiative being pursued by China in East Africa under its BRI programme. The project included construction of several rail lines and roads to oil fields. The Bagamoyo port was intended to be built as the biggest port in all of East Africa.

WOW! The President of the Philippines! He is shaming the US for all talk and no walk. For trying to make the Philippines the bait.

He is right. If the US don't fight then the PRC industrial engine will simply flood the surrounding seas with ships, aircraft and artificial islands.

If he can get an Unkil-Lizard war going then it'll be the greatest entertainment in two generations. lol

'LET'S BOMB EVERYTHING': PHILIPPINES PRESIDENT DUTERTE URGES U.S. TO DECLARE WAR ON CHINA

By David Brennan On 7/09/19 at 7:16 AM EDT

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte once again demonstrated his unconventional style of global diplomacy on Monday, calling on the U.S. to declare war on China over tensions in the South China Sea.

The strongman leader called on Washington to deploy the U.S. 7th Fleet—some 70 to 80 ships and submarines—to the South China Sea to push China out of the contested region.

The Philippines is one of five nations whose claims in the South China Sea overlap with Beijing's. The area contains rich fishing grounds, vital shipping routes and potential natural resources, but China has dismissed competing claims and enforced its control there by building a network of military bases on expanded or man-made shoals and reefs.

The U.S. has repeatedly condemned Chinese expansion in the South China Sea. American commanders regularly send warships and aircraft on "freedom of navigation" and overflight operations designed to keep pressure on Beijing and assert Washington's belief that the area constitutes international waters.

But Duterte told reporters Monday that such measures are insufficient, and that if the U.S. wants China out of the South China Sea, he would be willing to help.

"I have a proposal," Duterte said, according to Business Insider. "If America wants China to leave, and I can't make them...I want the whole 7th Fleet of the armed forces of the United States of America there."

"When they enter the South China Sea, I will enter," he said. "I will ride with the American who goes there first. Then I will tell the Americans, 'Okay, let's bomb everything.'"

Duterte's inflammatory speech was his second in three days, having also been beating the drum for war on Friday. During a speech marking the opening of a rice processing plant in Alangalang on the central island of Leyte, the president said the U.S. is always "pushing us, egging us" towards war with Beijing, "making me the bait," according to the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

"What do you think Filipinos are, earthworms?" he asked. "Now, I say, you bring your planes, your boats to South China Sea. Fire the first shot, and we are just here behind you. Go ahead, let's fight."

Duterte is a loose-cannon, doesn't take him minutes to change his position. After the Chinese deliberately sank the Philippino fishing boat near the Philippino-claimed islnd in Indo-China Sea, he even sided with the Chinese and that created a big furor within the Philippines. A few months back, he warned China that he will send a suicide squad to attack Chinese soldiers if they forcibly tried to occupy the island. A few days later, he also somersaulted on that.

his position is weak, as leader of a small weak country i think the only weapon he has is his mouth, one has to forgive him for using it quite "eloquently" , all said probably the US is itching for a fight , why don't they do it instead trying to get the kid to take the hot pan ?

kit, of course his position is weak, coming from a country which posseses just one Destroyer. We all know how a simple phytosanitary tightening of import by China of bananas, made the Philippines soften the stance against China over the ICS. But, Duterte speaks harshly too, for example, speaking of sending a suicide squad to attack the Chinese soldiers if they set foot on the reef. But, when the anchored fishing vessel was sunk by deliberate ramming which even his Defence Minister strongly condemned, Duterte comes back and says it was a 'simple maritime accident'. None in the Philippines has accepted his bizarre theory.

Arrest of Los Alamos scientist opens new front in crackdown on Chinese infiltration of U.S. labs
A physicist who worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory has been charged with lying to the government about contacts with a Chinese state-run program that seeks to recruit overseas scientists. (Photo: Albuquerque Journal via AP)
WASHINGTON — The indictment last week of a former researcher at Los Alamos National Laboratory in Santa Fe, N.M., appears to signal a new front in the government’s crackdown on China’s efforts to get access to sensitive U.S. scientific research.

Turab Lookman, 67, a theoretical physicist, was charged with lying on three occasions about his contacts with the Thousand Talents Plan, a Chinese government program aimed at funding and recruiting international experts. He has pleaded not guilty in federal court in Albuquerque.

Lookman was not charged with sharing secrets with the Chinese government, but with lying about research grants he received under the program. The Thousand Talents Plan has become a contentious issue between the U.S. and China owing to its focus on cutting-edge, often dual-use research. Los Alamos Labs, part of the Department of Energy, was where the atom bomb was developed and continues to host ongoing sensitive research on nuclear technology and other areas of national security, making it a prime target for infiltration.

Several previous DOJ cases since then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced his China Initiative in November 2018 have focused on intellectual-property theft from the private sector, Chinese state-sponsored hacking and Chinese recruitment of former U.S. intelligence officers. Cracking down on Chinese efforts to obtain information on basic scientific research is another, apparently new part of the initiative.

“The Department of Justice takes all instances of lying to federal officials seriously. It is especially important to do so when an individual lies about his involvement with a program established by the Chinese government to recruit people with access to and knowledge of foreign technology and intellectual property,” said John Demers, assistant attorney general for national security, in a statement emailed to Yahoo News.

“The Department’s China Initiative is squarely focused on protecting America’s economic security against China’s continued malfeasance. All businesses, academic and research institutions must be on the lookout for individuals in their organizations with divided loyalties, whether due to their participation in the Thousand Talents program or otherwise,” he continued.

Paul Linnenburger, Lookman’s attorney from the firm Rothstein Donatelli, told Yahoo News that “Dr. Lookman entered a plea of not guilty and we fully intend to mount a vigorous defense.”
