U.S. President Donald Trump said he’ll impose “large sanctions” on Turkey over the detention of an American pastor, plunging relations between the two NATO allies to a new low and extending a rout on Turkish financial markets.

Andrew Brunson, an evangelical minister detained on charges of involvement in a failed 2016 coup in Turkey, is “a great Christian, family man and wonderful human being,” Trump said in a tweet Thursday. “He is suffering greatly. This innocent man of faith should be released immediately!”

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu responded on Twitter, saying that the country “will never tolerate threats from anyone.” Ibrahim Kalin, a spokesman for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said the use of “threatening language” by the Trump administration against an allied nation was unacceptable.

It’s the latest in a series of crises between the longtime allies. The U.S. has slammed Turkey’s plans to buy a missile defense system from Russia, an issue that’s already raised the threat of American sanctions. The countries have also clashed over the war in Syria, where Turkey has increasingly acted in concert with Russia and Iran. Erdogan blames the U.S. for backing Kurdish militants in Syria, and harboring the alleged mastermind behind the coup attempt against his government.

Europe Averts a Trade War With Trump. But Can It Trust Him?

BRUSSELS — When he arrived in the Oval Office for negotiations over their growing trade war, Jean-Claude Juncker, the president of the European Commission, brought a small gift for President Trump, a renowned admirer of military commanders. It was a photograph of the cemetery in Luxembourg where Gen. George S. Patton is buried. Mr. Juncker, a wily, if often maligned, former prime minister of tiny Luxembourg, added an inscription, alluding to the shared sacrifice of Americans and Europeans during World War II. “Dear Donald,’’ it read. “Let us remember our common history.” Mr. Juncker left the Oval Office on Wednesday with a deal — or at least a truce — that for the moment has defused the Trump administration’s growing trade war with Brussels, while bringing relief across Europe, especially in Germany. Yet if Europe’s political and business leaders are cautiously optimistic that an economic crisis has been averted, they are also wary, given their history with Mr. Trump in the 18 months since he has taken office.
Even as Mr. Trump cast the meeting on Wednesday as a great success, and offered gratitude to Mr. Juncker, the question is whether the deal represents a meaningful improvement in the severely strained trans-Atlantic alliance, or is simply another example of the unpredictable approach of a president who has spent months mocking and undermining European leaders — even describing the European bloc as a “foe.”
“The question is, how much do you give in to a bully?” asked Maria Demertzis, the deputy director of Bruegel, an economic research institute in Brussels. “This could just be perfunctory, and if it just stops extra tariffs, that’s fine. But you can’t really depend on Trump. His understanding of global trade is bilateral balance, which is as good as arbitrary, given global supply chains. And it depends on what side of the bed he wakes up on tomorrow.”
For Mr. Juncker, the outcome was a triumph, even if he made concessions. The negotiations are also a reminder that Germany and its chancellor, Angela Merkel, still dominate the European Union. Mr. Trump’s threat to impose large new unilateral tariffs on imported automobiles shook German business to the core — and it would also have had a large impact on the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Spain and other countries that are important suppliers and manufacturers to the German car industry. Now the president has agreed to push that threat to the side as the two parties begin broader negotiations. The trade war erupted after Mr. Trump imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum, and the European Union responded with retaliatory tariffs on iconic American products like bluejeans, bourbon and Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Those tariffs will remain for now, but will be part of the negotiations.
“Juncker’s achievement was to get Trump to say publicly that he would reconsider steel and aluminum tariffs and not impose car tariffs in return for a negotiation,” said Guntram B. Wolff, director of Bruegel. “For the E.U., the gun is still loaded but it’s not pointed at our heads, so for us it’s a good moment to negotiate.” Indeed, some analysts argued that the new negotiations effectively represent a resurrection, in some fashion, of the effort begun by former President Barack Obama — and halted by President Trump — for a free-trade pact with Europe, known then as the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, or T.T.I.P. Together, the United States and the European Union comprise half of the global economy, and analysts were optimistic about the commitment by Mr. Trump and Mr. Juncker to work together to overhaul the World Trade Organization, especially given the rising power of China.

In a clip of the show on NJ101.5 obtained by NJ.com, show host Dennis Malloy could not remember Grewal's name during a segment about a recent action the attorney general took in temporarily suspending prosecution of marijuana cases in the state.
"The attorney general, you know, I'm never going to know his name," Malloy says. "I'm just going to say the guy with the turban."
"Turban man," co-host Judi Franco sings.

"Listen, if that offends you, then don't wear the turban, man," Malloy says. "And I'll remember your name."

Turkey has officially stated it will continue to buy Iranian oil and trade with them as usual sanctions be damned . Interesting to see how much of sanctions the US will exert on its major NATO ally

Trump willing to shut down government over border security

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. (AP) — President Donald Trump said Sunday he’d be willing to shut down the government if Democrats refuse to vote for his immigration proposals, including building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

“I would be willing to ‘shut down’ government if the Democrats do not give us the votes for Border Security, which includes the Wall!” Trump tweeted. “Must get rid of Lottery, Catch & Release etc. and finally go to system of Immigration based on MERIT!

“We need great people coming into our Country!” Trump said.

Trump returned to the idea of shutting down the government over the border wall just days after meeting at the White House with House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to discuss the fall legislative agenda.

McConnell, asked about a shutdown last week during a Kentucky radio interview, said it was not going to happen. He did acknowledge, however, that the border funding issue was unlikely to be resolved before the November midterm elections.

Trump campaigned on the promise of building a border wall to deter illegal immigration and making Mexico pay for it. Mexico has refused.

Congress has given the president some wall funding but not as much as he has requested. Trump also wants changes to legal immigration, including scrapping a visa lottery program. In addition, he wants to end the practice of releasing immigrants caught entering the country illegally on the condition that they show up for court hearings.

Trump has also demanded that the U.S. shift to an immigration system that’s based more on merit and less on family ties.

Democrats and some Republicans have objected to some of the changes Trump seeks.

The federal budget year ends Sept. 30, and lawmakers will spend much of August in their states campaigning for re-election in November. The House is now in a five-week recess, returning after Labor Day. The Senate remains in session and is set to take a one-week break the week of Aug. 6, then returning for the rest of the month.

Both chambers will have short window of working days to approve a spending bill before government funding expires.

Trump would be taking a political risk if he does, in fact, allow most government functions to lapse on Oct. 1 — the first day of the new budget year — roughly a month before the Nov. 6 elections, when Republican control of both the House and Senate is at stake.

House Republicans released a spending bill this month that provides $5 billion next year to build Trump’s wall, a major boost.

Democrats have long opposed financing Trump’s wall but lack the votes by themselves to block House approval of that amount. But they have the strength to derail legislation in the closely divided Senate. Without naming a figure, Trump said in April that he would “have no choice” but to force a government shutdown this fall if he doesn’t get the border security money he wants.

The $5 billion is well above the $1.6 billion in the Senate version of the bill, which would finance the Homeland Security Department. The higher amount matches what Trump has privately sought in conversations with Republican lawmakers, according to a GOP congressional aide who wasn’t authorized to publicly talk about private discussions and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Two leading Democrats — Reps. Nita Lowey of New York and California’s Lucille Roybal-Allard — called the $5 billion a waste that “only further enables this administration’s obsession with cruel attacks on immigrants.”

Separately Sunday, Trump tweeted that there are “consequences when people cross our Border illegally” and claimed that many who do so are “using children for their own sinister purposes.”

Trump’s tweet came several days after the government said more than 1,800 children separated at the U.S.-Mexico border under Trump’s “zero-tolerance” immigration policy have been reunited with parents and sponsors. A federal judge had ordered the reunions to be completed by last Thursday but hundreds of children remain separated. The administration says some of their parents have criminal histories.

“Please understand, there are consequences when people cross our Border illegally, whether they have children or not - and many are just using children for their own sinister purposes,” Trump said.

He also said Congress must fix “the DUMBEST & WORST immigration laws anywhere in the world!” and urged voters to “Vote ‘R’” in November.

We may think Khan is fighting too many fronts. But as an importer of the vast amount of goods and services he also has a lot of power. We simply ignore that. True that there will be a pain for normal people, but what they are going to lose? Most of them are hand to mouth anyway with huge loans and doing two or three jobs at the same time. The allegation of unfair trade practices now in public and are being repeated. That will give room for the administration with the political will to take some tough decisions and do hard bargaining. So DT may not be in a difficult situation at the levels we think he is in.

The biggest asset to the administration is the craziness or perceived craziness of its leadership. It is ready to take risks and examine areas and options which are earlier unthinkable. The possible reason may be lack of absolute commitment to the ideological orthodoxy of one kind of another. Decisions and paths are taken solely based on hard calculations. Subsidy to soya bean farmers is one of such things. China targetted them deliberately and DT responded to that targetting. I do not see anyone in Khanland politics refusing to subsidise the farmers in this situation. If there is a sustained 4% or near 4% growth then it will further give power to administration. EU, in the end, may fold easily than China. Even China I am not sure can sustain a long trade war. 11 also have internal dynamics of an export-based economy to worry about.

In the halls of Congress, the corridors of the administration, and the nerve centers of activist groups, forces are aligning behind a plan: a White House order to index capital gains for inflation.

If this happens, it will free up a lot of capital that today otherwise is parked waiting for estate sales upon transfer on death. Also signals inflation is going higher.

Inflation is tied to wage growth.

And wage growth is tied to investments in innovation and improving "productivity". For example, investment is leading to sites like brandless where you get good quality for bargain price. Its sales are cutting into Amazon and Costco! However the nature of the beast is that there is no substantial wage growth coming due to brandless coming online. Hence the inflation remains tepid.

Inflation is tied to energy.

Due to fracking, the upper limit on oil is now $70.00. And this again is 'sustained' due to continuous cuts. Also the world is changing with less dependency on gas and more focus on EV/Renewables. This keeps the inflation tepid.

I have been hearing about the "inflationary bear" since last 20 years. The worst economic crises I suffered was depression (deflation) and stagflation (in India).

US has reached that point where unless the economy is grossly mismanaged, inflation as seen in 80's is currently a remote possibility.

It says that there are 45,000+ sealed indictments at various US courts. It seems the normal number of sealed indictments at any time is 1K+. Rumor says that there is going to be many high profile arrests.

Ramana, could you please ask your lawyer contact who has account with PACER to verify few of the numbers listed in that table? It seems they can search sealed or unopened indictments for any date range in PACER or LexisNexis.

Next step was to expand towards the Pacific coast.
They industrialzed massively after the Civil War. By 1892 they were largest steel producer.
Both the world wars led to their becoming a world power.

Judging by the don jr developments, if its gotten up to him and threatening him of liability and it comes to jail time for him, Trump might cut a deal to resign. or otherwise, still get impeached if mid-terms go to the democrats.
