just like the dynastic mafia family in India trying to buy elections using public money.

just recall how easy it was to fool the people in madhya pradesh and how the congis fooled them so easily by promising loan waivers and whatnot, all of which they simply did not deliver.

and unlike the mafia gang, at least trump is delivering before the elections

some things never change and politicians the world over never miss any opportunity.

This is not buying elections. Every major government in the world is looking at providing some type of fiscal stimulus to counteract the recession that is sure to follow the pandemic. The US plan is more or less bipartisan. Both Dems and Repubs agree the stimulus is necessary while they may disagree on details. The US can print a lot more money without significant devaluation of the currency thanks to the $'s status as the world's favored reserve currency and they are going to take full advantage of it just like after the 2008/9 recession.

Nothing wrong with using debt as a tool in troubled times to revive its economy. But, the numbers below DO NOT include new ($2, $3, $4, $5 trillion) digital debt related to Coronavirus.

US Debt by President by Dollar and Percentage
...
Donald Trump: Trump plans to add $4.832 trillion to the debt in his first term. That's a 24% increase from the $20.245 trillion debt at the end of Obama's last budget for FY 2017. If he remains in office for a second term, he plans to add $8.3 trillion for both terms. Trump had promised to eliminate the debt during his campaign.

FY 2021 - $1.177 trillion projected
FY 2020 - $1.181 trillion projected
FY 2019 - $1.203 trillion
FY 2018 - $1.271 trillion

Barack Obama: Added $8.588 trillion, a 74% increase from the $11.657 trillion debt at the end of Bush’s last budget, FY 2009.

FY 2017 - $671 billion
FY 2016 - $1.423 trillion
FY 2015 - $327 billion
FY 2014 - $1.086 trillion
FY 2013 - $672 billion
FY 2012 - $1.276 trillion
FY 2011 - $1.229 trillion
FY 2010 - $1.652 trillion
FY 2009 - $253 billion. Congress passed the Economic Stimulus Act, which spent $253 billion in FY 2009. This rare occurrence should be added to President Obama's contribution to the debt.
...

New York Times - May 9, 2017 (when debt was $20 trillion)
‘Why Should We Worry About the National Debt?’

New York Times - Mar 27, 2020 (when debt estimated to be $24 trillion)
The US Is About to Vastly Increase Its Debt. That's a Good Thing.

Only the US can get away with this since the USD is the international currency. No one else can do this sort of thing. BTW, Munchkin stated the total amount of Wuhan virus stimulus would be somewhere in the $6+ billion region.

They know that and which is why H1-B and L-1A will continue. There may be a slight dip due to unemployment in the US, but it will pick back up later.

If only it were that affordable. Many Indian students going to US come from middle class Indian families that take loans, sell property, put marriages of siblings on hold etc. to pay for the chosen/promising one's US education. Unless the student works for few years and sends $$$ remittances, the family cannot recover from the financial burden.

Plus the Ghar waapsi person needs to accrue the capital needed to create startups and innovate. Else why go through all that to come back and work for an IT company?!!

One way or the other, you have to deal with the cards you are dealt with. Indian IT companies paychecks are decent enough for most of these guys to pay off their loans too. Will take time!

Do we have any choice? It's either making friends with some racist white guy who genuinely hates you or be friendly with the obvious friendly guy. It's not hard choice.

It's one of the reasons why I believe we will never be allies with america.

by all means, do make friends with the duplicitous pakis, be friendly, chit chat, shake hands with them, limit it to that, then thoroughly wash your hands twice and thereafter go back home.

do you remember the stage of India paki pappi jhappi mela when we almost gave the jehadi pakis seats in our IITs/IIMs, repeatedly kissed their unwashed butts as though it was the greatest thing since sliced bread.

this was followed by ABV and LKA who shovelled more of the very same schitt.

cashmeri muslims are the very worst of the victim card carrying, entitled by birth type of greedy scroungers who have perfected the art of living off the largesse of the Indian state for generations now.

had we continued down that very slippery slope, our paki born sardar would have ended up handing over cashmere on a silver plate to the pakis in return for a corroded, stained and second hand nobel, duly dusted off by the amerikis and presented to him with great fanfare while us poor mango Indians would have watched helplessly from the sidelines.

https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/IITs-IIMs-open-doors-to-Pakistan/articleshow/1082887.cms

IITs, IIMs open doors to Pakistan
Urmi A Goswami | TNN | Apr 20, 2005,

NEW DELHI: In the name of peace and neighbourly ties, your child may have to compete harder for that elusive seat at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) or the Indian Institute of Management (IIM). For, Pakistani students will soon be able to study at the IITs and IIMs.

This is a major reversal in policy as foreign students haven''t been allowed to study at the IITs so far. In fact, despite being among institutes with global recognition, the IITs and IIMs have never been part of any of the education roadshows organised by either EdCIL (Education Consultants India) or UGC-FICCI.

The idea being that as state-run institutions, funded substantially by the government, Indian students should have the first dibs on IIT/IIM education.

The suggestion was made by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his meetings with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf.

Sources say the Prime Minister''s Office (PMO) is keen on seeing the proposal go through.

(this guy certainly wasn't kidding when he said that the first call on India's resources should be given to the muslims, he never said paki muslims not included)

Pakistani students would have to appear for the IIT-JEE (IIT''s joint entrance exam) and the CAT (IIM''s common admission test).

A measure of the interest in opening up the country''s premier engineering and management institutions is the fact that the government will consider devising a separate exam for the Pakistani candidates...

...in the event that they can not appear for the IIT-JEE or CAT.

The ministry of human resources development, which the administrative ministry for these two institutions, will begin talks with the PMO shortly. Talks would determine modalities of the admission, the percentage of seats to be set aside for Pakistani students and the fee structure.

Admission to the IITs and IIMs are extremely competitive, with students working hard to crack the exams. In the case of the seven IITs, there are some 3000-odd seats up for grabs, while the six IIMs take in some 1300-odd students every year. More than two lakh students appear for the IITs while one lakh compete for the IIMs.

What is not clear is if this will mark the beginning of opening up of these highly-prized government-funded institutions to foreigners. Or will the Pakistani students be accorded a special favour?

New Delhi: India should reserve seats in its elite educational institutions for Pakistani Kashmiris who are bearing the brunt of state apathy, a new report has recommended.

The report, "Pakistan Occupied Kashmir: Changing the Discourse", by New Delhi-based Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, recasts the demand of students of Gilgit-Baltistan to have quotas in the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and law colleges of India.

The demand was made by residents of Pakistani Kashmir during their visit to India in 2006.

"Not very long ago, in 2006, students from Gilgit-Baltistan demanded reservation of seats in top Indian institutions. This should not be very difficult for the Indian government to implement," the IDSA report recommends.

The Gilgit-Baltistan residents, who were in Delhi for a conference, had passed a resolution that stated: "The Government of India should provide openings in higher, professional and technical educational institutions to deserving students from Gilgit-Baltistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, who are denied necessary facilities for such education."

Interestingly, the Jammu and Kashmir assembly has 25 seats reserved for members from the areas under Pakistani control since 1947.

The report alleges that Pakistan has forced demographic changes in the territory since its occupation.

"Chinese and jihadi influences are on the rise. Against this backdrop, India`s response to the developments in PoK, which is legally its own territory, has been rather lukewarm," it laments.

"There is hardly any effort in India to clearly define its objective on PoK which is regarded as an integral part of its territory. There is a greater need for India to clearly define its strategic objectives with regard to PoK and also elucidate how it intends to fulfil those objectives.

chetak garu, it's not about pakis or democrats. I was talking about our new allies/friends - white racist trump supporters. if you can be chummies with them, no one can stop you. I find it normal for educated indians to fall for liberals as they atleast sugar coat it.

fwiw, i don't like people from both rw and lw in america. i prefer our asians over them any given day. we have no friends in the west. I mean the actual west of our nation including pakis.

Some of the usual suspects in the US have started the protest narrative. The Michigan rally few days back had the usual 2nd amendment, church and conspiracy theory people joined by the anti-vaccine club. Openly flouting all health guidelines and asking for the 'lockdown' to be lifted. Most also brought their kids along to apparently teach them about 'liberty'. One such bright soul even went on to claim eating organic food was enough to keep the overhyped virus at bay.

Ocasio-Cortez says Biden campaign has not reached out to her

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said in a new interview that presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s campaign has not reached out to her.
The progressive first-term congresswoman was a high-profile surrogate for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who dropped out of the race last week.
She reiterated in an interview with The New York Times published Monday that she plans to support the party’s nominee.

“I’ve always said that I will support the Democratic nominee. But unity is a process, and figuring out what that looks like is part of this whole conversation that I think Bernie and [Sen. Elizabeth] Warren [D-Mass.] and other folks are a part of as well,” she said.
Ocasio-Cortez also did not rule out a combined unity rally with the former vice president.
“Is a Biden-AOC unity rally ever in the cards?” the Times asked.
“It could be. I have not talked to the vice president,” Ocasio-Cortez responded, adding that she doesn’t think she has ever spoken to Biden.
A spokesperson for the Biden campaign was not immediately available for comment.

Another achievement of Trump administration: Removing FDA approval for testing kits leading to this:
Dozens of coronavirus antibody tests on the market were never vetted by the FDA, leading to accuracy concerns
https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/04/19/fda-antibody-tests-coronavirus-review/

The Food and Drug Administration, criticized for slowness in authorizing tests to detect coronavirus infections, has taken a strikingly different approach to antibody tests, allowing more than 90 on the market without prior review, including some that are being marketed fraudulently and are of dubious quality, according to testing experts and the agency itself.

Antibody, or serological, tests are designed to identify people who may have overcome covid-19, including those who had no symptoms, and developed an immune response. They are not designed to detect active infections. Some officials tout the blood tests as a way to reopen the economy by identifying individuals who have developed immunity and can safely return to work. But many scientists, as well as the World Health Organization, say evidence is lacking that even high-quality antibody tests can prove someone has immunity from the novel coronavirus and is not at risk of being reinfected.

Now, the emergence of dozens of tests never reviewed by the FDA — many of which are being aggressively marketed — could confuse doctors, hospitals, employers and consumers clamoring for the products, according to critics who say the agency’s oversight of the tests has been lax. The questions are taking on special importance as federal and state officials debate various strategies, including using serological testing, to help determine when they can end state and local lockdowns.

“A test is only as good as its results,” said Kelly Wroblewski, director of infectious disease programs at the Association of Public Health Laboratories, which has been urging the FDA to take a closer look at the unapproved tests. “Having many inaccurate tests is worse than having no tests at all.”

Prodded by such concerns, the FDA recently has stepped up warnings and is joining other agencies, including the National Cancer Institute, to try to determine whether the unvetted tests actually work.

On Thursday, during an interview with Washington Post Live, FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn said “people should be very cautious” about tests that have not undergone the rigorous process of getting emergency use authorization from the agency. So far, only four tests have gotten such authorizations: Cellex, Chembio Diagnostic Systems, Ortho Clinical Diagnostics and Mount Sinai Laboratory.

Domestic terror suspect allegedly plotted to use car bomb on hospital during coronavirus outbreak

The FBI announced on Wednesday night that a domestic terrorism suspect who was allegedly planning to use a car bomb at a local medical facility was killed during an attempt to apprehend him just outside of Kansas City, Missouri.

Timothy Wilson, 36, was "actively planning to commit an act of domestic terrorism -- a bombing -- and over the course of several months had considered several targets," according to the FBI. He had recently decided to target a hospital as news surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic picked up, sources familiar worth the investigation told ABC News.

Wilson was killed Tuesday when he allegedly showed up armed to pick up an inert explosive device supplied by authorities. He was injured and taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

It is unclear whether the suspect killed himself or he was shot by authorities.

According to the FBI, Wilson sped up the plan to use his car as a bombing device "in an attempt to cause severe harm and mass casualties" during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Wilson considered various targets and ultimately settled on an area hospital in an attempt to harm many people, targeting a facility that is providing critical medical care in today's environment," according to a statement from the FBI Kansas City Field Office. "Wilson had taken the necessary steps to acquire materials needed to build an explosive device. At all times during the investigation, the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force kept close track of Wilson in order to protect public safety."

One of the suspect's early targets was a school with African American youth, according to sources.

Wilson was under investigation by the FBI for nearly 18 months.

New Projections: (US) Debt Will Exceed the Size of the Economy This Year
...Our latest projections find that under current law, budget deficits will total more than $3.8 trillion (18.7 percent of GDP) this year and $2.1 trillion (9.7 percent of GDP) in 2021. We project debt held by the public will exceed the size of the economy by the end of Fiscal Year 2020 and eclipse the prior record set after World War II by 2023...

Trump claims he will temporarily suspend immigration into US due to coronavirus fears
Betsy Klein and Priscilla Alvarez, CNN, Tue April 21, 2020

(CNN)President Donald Trump said late Monday night he will sign an executive order temporarily suspending immigration to the United States as the nation battles the health and economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
"In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens, I will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States!" he tweeted.
It's unclear what mechanism he will use to suspend immigration, how long such a suspension could last or what effect this will have on the operation of US border crossings and on those who already hold green cards.
The White House declined to provide further information on the executive order Monday evening. The Department of Homeland Security didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
As a result of coronavirus and attempts to curtail its spread, immigration to the United States has been largely cut off: Refugee resettlement has been put on hold, visa offices are largely closed and citizenship ceremonies aren't happening. Trump didn't offer details Monday on what he intends to do to further restrict immigration in the face of coronavirus.

trump is disbanding the post ww2, and cold war US designed world order that was carved out carefully over the decades. Outside the crassness that people associate him with, there may be growing realization that china has beaten them on their own pitch. and perhaps India might do the same in future and will be much harder to justify as India will have so many shared +s and -s as US. May be US wants to avoid their Britain moment and this is how loosely Thucidydes trap is playing out. I was looking for increase action against china..but DT has weilded the sledgehammer...what would be most important is that what would be the new order and what seat do we get. Hopefully we will not be that idealistic like last time around

Remember reading that an exemption is made for existing business, work permit & student visa holders. Probably the ban is on issuing newer visas...

Trump has been anti china since 1988.His views were clearly enumerated and explained in an interview with Opera Winfery. I should be available on You tube.

See! The problem is he is just talk and threats. No plan. No execution. Just want to show up like a real tough guy. Have you seen anything different in last 4 years?

As long as he keeps self congratulating his voters will vote for him.

By the time Trump administration implemented policy to the time it took effect was delayed. US trade deficit with China in 2019 was $345 billion, from a high of $419 billion in 2018. The first two months of this year was also significantly down before COVID-19. Trump has been moving away from Chinese imports very slowly, but albeit it is happening. We did not see this with prior administrations.

This is correct. India's fight is what will happen in the next 10-100 years.
