I know this is not the US elections thread but there is a strong undertow of Trumpites taking over the Republican primaries.
Of the 55 primaries held so far all are Trumpite.
IOW if there is a change in Nov 2022 it will possibly mean Mitch won't be the majority leader.

Senate is an Old Boys Club. Only 100 of them, and ~50 being Republicans.

In such a situation, shrewd operators like McConnell (a political survivor for 40+ years) know how to retain control regardless of what praja wants. He knows the buttons to push, inducements to offer, threats to make for all other Republican senatorial incumbents to stay in line.

I would not count him out just yet.

Need some tight analysis of Biden's statements in Japan at the Quad 2.0 meeting.

Despite his present image he has been in ruling circles since 1976 as a US Senator, VP, and the President.
So he is quite familiar with real politick and the agenda of the US govt.

Instead, we have glib one-liners!
And hosannas from the Indian media.

This is what's called grooming, and there is a reason why right wing is pushing this agenda and is using "woke " to deflect their sinister pedophile agenda. In order to understand the US, one must look into the pro-grooming culture propagated by the major party, some examples below will only scratch the surface. It has become such an epidemic that if you are a republican and if there is an allegation of sexual misconduct, now you don't even lose the election, at least the primaries.

https://truthout.org/articles/tennessee ... ge-limits/

Republican Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert was indicted on federal charges of structuring bank withdrawals after prosecutors alleged Hastert had molested at least four boys as young as 14 and attempted to compensate his victims and subsequently conceal the transactions. Republican fundraiser Richard A. Delgaudio was found guilty of child ***** charges and paying two teenage girls to pose for sexual photos.

Republican activist Mark A. Grethen convicted on six counts of sex crimes involving children.

Republican activist Randal David Ankeney pleaded guilty to attempted sexual assault on a child.

Republican Congressman Dan Crane had sex with a female minor working as a congressional page.

Republican activist and Christian Coalition leader Beverly Russell admitted to an incestuous relationship with his step daughter. Republican congressman and anti-gay activist Robert Bauman was charged with having sex with a 16-year-old boy he picked up at a gay bar.

Republican Committee Chairman Jeffrey Patti was arrested for distributing a video clip of a 5-year-old girl being raped.

Republican activist Marty Glickman (a.k.a. “Republican Marty”), was taken into custody by Florida police on four counts of unlawful sexual activity with an underage girl and one count of delivering the drug LSD.

Republican legislative aide Howard L. Brooks was charged with molesting a 12-year old boy and possession of child *****. Republican Senate candidate John Hathaway was accused of having sex with his 12-year old baby sitter and withdrew his candidacy after the allegations were reported in the media.

Republican preacher Stephen White, who demanded a return to traditional values, was sentenced to jail after offering $20 to a 14-year-old boy for permission to perform oral sex on him.

Republican talk show host Jon Matthews pleaded guilty to exposing his genitals to an 11 year old girl.

Republican anti-gay activist Earl “Butch” Kimmerling was sentenced to 40 years in prison for molesting an 8-year old girl after he attempted to stop a gay couple from adopting her.

Ramana garu,
I will take a preliminary stab at this. It looks like the US has tried to shut down any statements from Chinese side regarding taking TWN. I don't know if Xi has decided he has waited enough and looking at what Russia has done with respect to war in UKR, decided that China has the leverage of being the manufacturing factory for cheap products for the world, would let the unification from Chinese perspective.

the chinese also seem to have covid issues with their local politics running rough shod for Xi, maybe he has decided to mount an external campaign to show his "power" and consolidate it. That leaves them with South china Sea and India as flash points with a very very distant one being the border with Russia to be re-aligned. I don't think China is going to scratch/poke the russian bear currently and they have occupied as much of the 9 dash line as they want without waging a war.

That leaves us with India and with the summer months, it would be easier than winter to conduct operations. The Indian army moving additional forces to chinese borders seem to bolster this argument. is the US trying to push the clash between chinese and India, by blocking of TWN or are we making too much from an old President that muttered something, time will confirm.

A lot of what i have written is based on assumptions only, Mods may move this to chinese thread if they feel this is inappropriate here.

What if Xiden is actually trying to provoke 11 to attack Taiwan in the hopes of getting the nation (and some extent international community) to back him in a fight with Chipanda? Could be a useful distraction albeit costly but since when do politicians consider collateral damage while making such decisions?

I believe that "old capital" pulls a lot more strings than "new capital". The culture of trade and associated advantages has been firmly implanted in the western psyche. For example of how trade and foriegn policy go hand in hand :

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/20/worl ... banks.html

In other words globalization was/is an execuse for other ends ( i am sure it is the case in mexico too) . I faintly recall a book "History of money" which traced how wars were funded in europe by bankers/banking family kings etc. Poor Mexico like other countries is just trying to take advantage of the cards it has been dealt with. The author makes his case from an American POV but has failed to credit 100s of Haiti like scenarios where it benefited the "old capital" folks.

While this author argues how American manufacturing suffered in detroit, a few weeks back Elon musk tweeted that chinese workers are not just burning the midnight oil but 4.00 am oil for advantages. Everyone jostles for space in the global economy, us stopped competing in the majority of the auto manufacturing segment like the UK did a long time ago - NAFTA or not

While foriegn policy and ultimately trade advantage/accumulating wealth is the goal, fiscal deficit is the inevitability of the current situation

One observation I can offer is that his statements appear to have seriously spooked the China lobby in the West.

If you go to foreign-policy commentary aggregators like Real Clear World and National Interest, you'll see two-three articles coming out every day criticizing Biden's statements and warning that US going to war against China over Taiwan would be an epic disaster. Most of them are by Brookings & CEIP types, as expected.

Examples:

https://www.19fortyfive.com/2022/05/goi ... l-to-make/
"Going to War Over Taiwan Isn't Biden's Call "

https://www.realclearworld.com/2022/05/ ... 33623.html
"A Fight Over Taiwan Could Go Nuclear"

https://nationalinterest.org/feature/ca ... ted-202584
"Can a U.S.-China War Be Averted?"

(This last one is interesting because it attempts to reposition Kevin Rudd-- the crooked, pro-Beijing former PM of Australia-- as some kind of sage "voice of reason" and latter-day Henry Kissinger. All the pro-China chatterers are being recruited out of the woodwork now.)

To be honest we can get the news aggregators' drivel anytime.
I want analysis from an Indian interest point of view.

After 19th Congress XJP laid down the goals of Taiwan integration and beyond He gave milestones of 2030 and 2050.
Now Biden is reminding XJP of the US commitment to defend Taiwan whatever that means.
Is it like Ukraine or is it like South Korea?

XJP has some near term milestones:
September BRICS meeting and Trokia meetings.
October 10th is the China National/1010 Day
November is 20th Congress.
In all these a key factor is relations with India.
So how will this play out?

By invoking the defend Taiwan card is Biden suggesting to, go ahead with Journey to the West?

The biggest difference between Ukraine and Taiwan is that Ukraine is an independent nation. Taiwan has not declared independence. So legally any intervention in Taiwan will be an intervention in PRC internal affairs.

The second thing is the defence of Taiwan act. But given the history of US and international treaties, if I was Taiwan, it will not be very reassuring.

Thirdly the PRC lacks the ambhibious and airlift capacity needed to dominate the island. Coupled with a ack of inflight refueling capacity. PRC can't realistically be expected to make a move on Taiwan. Therefore, the commitment from Biden to defend Taiwan is nearly meaningless. Thus, totally cost free for Biden and only an irritant for PRC, if they want to be irritated.

If the same mass shooting had been done by a malsi terrorist, the US would have started to make preparations to bomb that country.

But in this case, the news of the entire shooting has subsided very quickly after the merest hint of a whimper of a mention from the mard of an ameriki administration and their equally presstitute, pussy press

including presstitute channels in India justifying the heinous mass shooting.....

I am a little unclear about what you mean by 'old capital ' and 'new capital'. If by 'new capital' you mean silicon valley entrepreneurs and their wealth, I dare say that indeed might be the case. But at a more subliminal level such a distinction is meaningless as Bankers substantially own silicon valley businesses just as they own the Fords and General Motors.

Yes sir. True on both accounts. Only reason I made the earlier distinction was because silicon valley entrepreneurs might dwell on knowledge based economy, flat earth, globalization etc for market access while old capital works in the shadows and takes what it can

WHY THE QUAD BECAME BIDEN’S DEMOCRACY SUMMIT
Dr Gorana Grgic

Senior Lecturer in US Politics and Foreign Policy, United States Studies Centre (jointly appointed with the Department of Government and International Relations, University of Sydney)
The recent Quad Summit was the culmination of an intense two weeks of high-level Indo-Pacific diplomacy by the Biden Administration. ABC TV spoke to the United States Studies Centre Senior Lecturer Gorana Grgic about the outcomes of the recent Quad meeting and especially what it meant for President Biden. “The Quad was a response to geopolitical uncertainty in the Indo-Pacific … the whole point of this meeting was to fit in with Biden’s agenda as a democracy summit,” Grgic said.

The Quad Is Getting More Ambitious in the Indo-Pacific
Sheila A. Smith, May 27, 2022
What did the latest Quad summit accomplish?

In a joint statement from the Quad summit hosted by Japan in May 2022, the leaders of the United States, Australia, India, and Japan reemphasized the principles of a free and open Indo-Pacific: freedom, rule of law, democratic values, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. The meeting also appeared to reinforce a central purpose of the Quad—to provide the region with public goods.

The meeting also appeared to reinforce a central purpose of the Quad—to provide the region with public goods.
How did the Quad address China?
The Quad leaders emphasized their shared values, including support for dispute settlement over the use of force and opposition to any unilateral attempt to change the status quo. Though they did not name China, repeated references to these principles of regionalism demonstrate their concern that China is seeking to challenge claims to maritime boundaries and to islands in both the East and South China Seas. Similarly, a reference to the principle of freedom of navigation and overflight pushes back against China’s growing assertion on its right to control maritime and airspace claimed by its neighbors.
They also spoke to their “resolve to uphold the international rules-based order where countries are free from all forms of military, economic, and political coercion.” Here again the inference is to China’s growing use of its economic might to achieve political gains. Australia, India, and Japan have all felt China’s recent coercive pressures.
The Quad statement did not mention Taiwan, even after U.S. President Joe Biden said a day earlier that the United States is bound to come to Taiwan’s defense.(U.S. officials later walked back Biden’s statement.) The Quad partners have different stakes on the Taiwan issue. Japan has the biggest risk, given its proximity to Taiwan and its alliance with the United States. Many in Tokyo seemed to welcome U.S. clarity; it remains to be seen whether Australia shares that view. India would most likely avoid risking its security interests with any engagement on the Taiwan issue.

"Earlier this week, Kissinger told attendees of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that a peace deal must be reached between Kiev and Moscow in the coming months, lest the conflict in Ukraine spiral into a global war between NATO and Russia. To do this, Kissinger said that Ukraine must at least accept a return to the “status quo ante,” or relinquish its territorial claims to Crimea and grant autonomy to the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics."

So Ukraine War is also a crisis in US foreign policy. its breaking the consensus on Russia.

https://www.19fortyfive.com/2022/05/the ... r-is-real/
Sen. Rand Paul held up the $40 billion Ukraine aid package that was signed into law by President Joe Biden. “No matter how sympathetic the cause, my oath of office is to the national security of the United States of America,” Paul said. “We cannot save Ukraine by dooming the U.S. economy.
“This goes far beyond targeted military assistance,” Hawley wrote. “This package treats Ukraine as a client state of America, a fraught relationship that will put us on the hook for financing the war and then the reconstruction.” The senator went on to call for repealing “a Wilsonian globalism that seeks to remake the world” and replacing it with “a robust, realistic American nationalism.”
More surprisingly, the president of the uber Reaganite Heritage Foundation stands with Rand. Kevin Roberts argued in a Wall Street Journal op-ed that “U.S. aid to Ukraine is about our interests, not theirs. And sympathy for Ukraine does not pre-require trust in Congress, least of all through yet another of its fake, frenzied, ‘must pass’ fire drills.”

Like Hawley, Roberts drew broader foreign policy conclusions from the debate over Ukraine aid. “Was conservatism well served by accusing skeptics of the Iraq War of ‘hating their country’?” he asked, referring to David Frum’s “Unpatriotic Conservatives” cover story in the Bush-era National Review. And in an interview with Axios, Roberts cast his lot with Tucker Carlson, Peter Thiel, the Kochs, the Cato Institute, and others seeking a conservative foreign policy realignment.
Since the end of the Cold War, whenever conservatives have started to have an argument over foreign policy, the dialogue was short-lived. Consider how the 1990s Buchanan presidential bids gave way to the nomination of George W. Bush in 2000, followed by John McCain eight years later. Similarly, conservative opposition to the Kosovo war fell to the desire for a more activist foreign policy after 9/11 and the Republicans who opposed Barack Obama on Libya and Syria were once again sidelined when Mitt Romney won the presidential nomination in 2012.

I don't think that kissenger is saying anything new. He has held this position from as far back as 2014. His current position only acknowledges the current set of realities.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions ... story.html

Another article by Stephen Walt from January in the same theme.

https://foreignpolicy.com/2022/01/19/uk ... illusions/

This is why, i have trouble even understanding why the US is persuing this foreign policy in Ukraine.

The most credible argument in favour of this policy is the formulation from Zig. Brizensky. That Russia with Ukraine is an empire. Russia without Ukraine is just another nation.

But this formulation has been overcome by the rise of China.

The US, if it was a rational player should over the last few years should have been able to pivot away from this course adjusting to new realities. But Trump Russia gate scandal was designed to prevent such a course change.

Was it because Hillary Clinton was compromised by PRC? Or the entire democratic party establishment since Bill Clinton days was compromised by PRC.

I see the G2 formulation from Obama as a manifestation of this phenomenon.

The impeachment of Donald Trump over Ukraine gate is another manifestation. As it closed any possibility of having any accord with Russia over Ukraine.

Russia against the west makes the US spend it's energies in Europe. When it's focus should be on Western Pacific region.

Maybe every US president uses war as a popularity/unifying the country proxy mechanism. Here is a history of US presidents and the wars they initiated and/or inherited

https://www.historyguy.com/wars_by_president.htm

15 Presidents from World War II and each one had both inherited and initiated wars.

There is research that shows popularity falling when body bags start showing up.

I think without this primary driver, other secondary/tertiary drivers will not be evaluated

Trump remains the only US President in the last 45 years to NOT have started a new war!

But is Ukraine about inheriting a war or deliberately causing a war by acts of comission. Starting right from 2004 and pushing into top gear after 2014.

The underlying reasons along with long term goals and endgame is what we are not seeing.

Isn't it funny that the man who was feared to start WW3 didn't start any wars.

Of the 55 primaries held so far all are Trumpite.
IOW if there is a change in Nov 2022 it will possibly mean Mitch won't be the majority leader.

After Ron Reagan defeat of the Soviet Union, the US reverted to G2 of US and China. Bush Sr was cozy with the Chinese, after which Clinton sold key technology to the Chinese. Both Clinton and Bush Sr. were close friends despite the rivalry. A major number of key US businesses relocated to China for labor arbitrage during Bush Sr and Clinton period. G2 was firmly cemented. Then came Bush Jr who continued with the same policy. Ombaba furthered and deepened the tango. Ombaba, Bush, Clinton are all pals now. Trump was first US president to see China as one of the main threats to the world, the other being Radical Islamic Terror. He dealt with the later quickly and there was no more ISIS threat. China was squeezed during Trump era. Quite naturally China played a key role in the election for ByeDone.

The current Ukr-Rus tussle has put a spanner in the works by strengthening the Rus-China relationship. This is an outcome of Bush Jr and Ombaba era along with Hilary Clinton's election against Trump. However the G2 of US and China still endures and I see this continuing. China gets a slight upperhand in the relation with the US, since they have Rus on their side.

Trump's fate was sealed on Wednesday 19 June 2019. That was the date he recalled US military aircraft already launched to begin an attack on Iran. On that date as late as 7PM Washington time, the Deep State was expecting a significant attack on Iran, as they had convinced Trump it was the right thing to do. He questioned various people in USAF and intelligence as to what would be the results of the attack, casualties, and what Iran might do as a counter attack. A last minute pull back.

Privately, there were many military commanders deeply upset at the decision and were seething with anger.

The Founding Fathers of the USA felt that citizens should be able to protect themselves against the government and any other threat to their wellbeing or personal freedom. The Second Amendment granted citizens that right — giving them the ability to defend themselves + property.
which idiots interpret the above as permission to buy, own and use assault weapons that many country's armies cannot afford to possess because manufacturer's will not ship to them or sanctimonious gora govts will not sell to them

At least eight mass shootings took place across the U.S. over the weekend following Tuesday's mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

Another three occurred between Wednesday and Friday.
making for a total of 11 mass shootings, after the one in Uvalde, Texas

and these are the gora @holes intent on frequently pontificating to India about human rights, when they cannot protect their own kids, in their own country

Trump's endorsements in many high-profile races have not been enough to assure victory.

Brian Kemp and Brad Raffensperger have prevailed in the Georgia Republican primaries despite Trump's extreme opposition to them. Raffensperger is the Secretary of State who ignored Trump's plea to decertify the 2020 election results.

In Pennsylvania Mehmet Oz (Trump's favoured Senate Primary candidate) could not conclusively defeat David McCormick in the primaries; both are headed for a recount. From India's point of view, both are bad choices for the Senate. David McCormick is supported by the rabid EJ paleo-Republicans like Rick Santorum, a frequent India-baiter. And Mehmet Oz is an unregistered lobbyist and foreign agent for Turkey's Erdogan government (https://www.meforum.org/62896/behind-dr-oz-curtain).

In many cases, Trump waited until the last minute to endorse the candidate who had the best chance of winning on the eve of the Primary election (rather than Trump's endorsement being the factor that determined the winning candidate). This was the case in Pennsylvania where Trump initially backed Lou Barletta in the Senate Primaries, but then officially endorsed Doug Mastriano-- just three days before the election-- when it became obvious that Mastriano had far more support in the polls.

To secure the 2024 Republican nomination, Trump needs his favoured candidates to win, not only in the primaries but in the November 2022 elections as well. That is how he hopes to show his continuing influence over the GOP electorate. Unless that happens, De Santis and other sharks are going to be circling in the Presidential Primaries.

Despite his strange love of Erdogan, Trump continues to be the best choice for Republican Presidential Candidate from India's POV.

ramana wrote:"Earlier this week, Kissinger told attendees of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that a peace deal must be reached between Kiev and Moscow in the coming months, lest the conflict in Ukraine spiral into a global war between NATO and Russia.

What makes Democrats pursue this policy?
In my view Kissinger at Davos was doing Track II diplomacy for the Joe Biden government. The initial response to the Ukraine invasion involved a lot of chest beating by Biden Sarkar, which made the MIC happy and ensured big donations for Democrats to contest the November elections. Please take a look at stocks such as Transdigm Group, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, etc. See what happened to them in late February/early March.

But now Biden Sarkar wants a way out (their true instinct is to retreat, as we all know). Now that the MANPADS, ATGMs etc have been sold (and a massive $40B military aid package has been passed), they have no further interest in actually taking military efforts to counter Russia.

So they've sent HK to Davos with this trial balloon. Essentially it's the US foreign policy establishment offering terms to Russia... official recognition of status quo ante (Crimea and Donbass). That's their initial negotiating position, because they know Ukraine will never dislodge the Russians from these areas, and they don't want to be called to do more.

Kissinger has been used in this role by many Democratic presidential regimes, including Clinton and Obama. Ironically, it was a Republican (Trump) who ignored Kissinger's unsolicited advice to go easy on China.
