Understanding the US - Again
Re: Understanding the US - Again
This is a huge development. US pulling out of Syria, pulling 50% troops out of Afghanistan, and Mad Dog quitting, all this amidst a cold war brewing with the Chinese, and an imminent entry into a recessionary period. Trump, it could turn out, may be ahead of the curve in preparing for a cold winter by cutting the unnecessary costs of optional wars. Why squander money, men and materiel on issues of no particular concern or with any strategic end game in sight? Obama declared victory and pulled out US troops from Iraq, and now DT is doing the same in Syria/Afg but this time the liberal media is crying foul.
Lowering US troop numbers in Afghanistan is only good for us. This means less dependence of the US on Pakistan, therefore less leverage in the hands of the Pakis. More mayhem in Afghanistan is a side effect, but this will again tie Paki hands because of the inevitable blowback. Afghanistan is a country of 30+ million and needs to figure out its sh!t by itself. Paki "strategic depth" is a non-issue because the China-Paki JV already has huge strategic depth.
Let us sit back and watch the Pakis fiddle in Afghanistan matters all over again, and get burnt, all over again. There is no additional threat to us that was not there earlier. Moreover this time there is a lot of animosity in Pakistan towards the Afghans and vice versa, there is a border wall being built (i.e. lots of $$ used), and dissent within the KPK territories. The only change is China who has the money, muscle and motivation to jump in, but they aren't stupid to not learn from history.

Afghan war is now 17 years old. That's since 2001. In fact it is 39 years old, if u count the stupid meddling that led to the rise of the Pakiban - and 9/11. Meanwhile Iraq is in its Revenge for Revenge for Revenge for Revenge for Revenge for... mode. Syria is getting there. Overall, nice portfolio of successes for Foggy Bottom and Gontapen.
And BTW, Thin Young One has just discovered that he needs all those nukes and nuke-bombers out of Guam, plus the boomers, b4 he can consider de-nuking. Now the cheen is REALLY close to winning the Pacific and the Cheen Ocean and clearing the US out of there.

I await with bated breath, cheen attempting to manage and take over afghanistan with its money.
if history is any guide, nobody can rule afghanistan - not with money, not with guns, not even islam is a glue. its just one of these 'spaces between civilizations' which seem to drift into chaos in cycles.
we need to pick our factions in afghanistan and arm and train them well. war is coming probably.

^^the question is which side. i dont think training will be an issue in the land which has given lot of pains to the two superpowers. It's just a question of money. As kerry truthful packer said during taliban days, if we could hold them for few million we can defeat them in few billions. It could be a good test for our fledgling MIC, Arjun, Atags, can find good use there

Troop Increase in Afghanistan Is Underway, General Says
Jan 21, 2018
Up to 1,000 more U.S. troops could be headed to Afghanistan this spring
Dec 20, 2018
U.S. plans for more than 5,000 troops to be withdrawn from Afghanistan
Look like 5,000 more sent since middle of 2017 and same number or some more coming back. Looks like some reduction is happening, but when was the last time anyone saw a genuine investigative report counting real number of troops in Afg.? Pull out any MSM article, and you will find it difficult to see an agreement on a number. All news reports provide a number, but caveat it by saying some "unidentified" source that the real number could be higher. And about pulling out of Syria, when was the last time uncle left a country after entering uninvited?

all supposed 'adults in the room' (or the hobblers of trump's agenda, as seen by trumpians) are almost gone now. not a single one is left behind. when kelly's gone, all top posts will be fox news type hires, trump personal loyalists etc.
Re: Understanding the US - Again
The reason I think this is a non-trivial occurrence is because of Matthis departure. He clearly had some game plan in mind and Trump's move (or reversal of earlier move) short-circuited it. Therefore it is not business as usual.chanakyaa wrote: Look like 5,000 more sent since middle of 2017 and same number or some more coming back. Don't forget the Zionists. They could drive Trump's agenda moving forward now that the rest of the opposition has been decimated.Gus wrote:all supposed 'adults in the room' (or the hobblers of trump's agenda, as seen by trumpians) are almost gone now. not a single one is left behind. when kelly's gone, all top posts will be fox news type hires, trump personal loyalists etc.
Trump's cabinet departures, their public exit tweets and ensuing drama is looking a lot like RBI guv departures. Clearly, leadership has a bigger picture of how they want things to evolve and their subordinates (even if "independent") are getting in the way.

Wow! Surprised that they would announce this. Sounds like Disinformationsky. That would be in-the-face of the Monroe Doctrine. Not since Cuba 1961 has this been tried. Grenada tried stepping out of line and was invaded, IMO. A POTUS who allows this may be dissed as the worst in US history, but warmongers. Unfortunately the Other Side is now more warmongering than the usual warmongers. Special Prosecutor anyone?Singha wrote:Brasco_Aad

If Russians get away with this, much larger cheen Trans-South-American Belt/Noose will come up. There may soon be North Korean nuclear subs and mijjiles pointing north from El Salvador (I forget: do they have a coast? never mind). Colombia and Honduras may need THAAD systems.
Also, if Venezuela gets away with this, can Argentina be far behind? French Guyana? Bermuda?

^^^They only have one squadron around 16-18 with another 10 in production. Of that, my guess is less than 2/3 are really serviceable. The rest are hanger queens. If oil prices can be kept below $50/barrel, it will seriously constrain RuAF deployment and acquisitions.

Guinea from wiki
Former French colony in Equatorial Africa gained independence in 1958 and became contested by Soviet Union and US as every other new African state. The country was led by Ahmed Sékou Touré. At first the dictator and Soviet Union did not get along as Soviet ambassador was expelled for meddling in internal affairs and during Cuban Missile Crisis the Soviets requested to use the airfield in Guinea for their jets, but were denied. However, in 1970 Portugal staged invasion by mercenary troops to overthrow Touré, because he was supporting independence movement in Portuguese Guinea. The invasion failed and Touré was forced to seek protection from Soviets. Soviet fleet was stationed in Conakry port and TU-95D reconnaissance planes were sent to airfield. It was useful for tracking the US naval movements. In 1974 the Portuguese Guinea became independent Guinea-Bissau and Touré no longer felt danger and need for Soviet protection. Soviet naval and air force contingent meanwhile remained in the country. In 1977 Soviet Union pressed Guinea to have permanent naval base, however Touré resisted and forbid Soviet Airforce to take reconnaissance flights from his country.[28] Eventually Soviets had to abandon Guinea. Touré died in 1984 and their successors did not wat to Soviets back.

Yes, that is correct. Key members of congress, supreme court judges, cabinet members, joint chiefs, and US presidents are all products of the Ivy League universities. Harvard, Yale, and Princeton primarily who have degrees in the humanities, business and law. No, Ramanaji. The City of Newman is not too far from Merced, where I live, and I have passed by this small city, on my way to somewhere else. Population is 10K, small and rural. Their Police Department must also be very small. Such things did not happen in such places. Officer Singh was only 33 years old and leaves behind a son and wife. The killer's identity is already known. As a cop killer CDCR will welcome him and provide him with safe housing. The case is all over the local news.

The american south blood and soil national psyche is similar to russia.
Both see and project themselves as a nation of rugged individualists able to survive extreme weather and hardships and eke something out of what was wasteland.
Deeply religious, hard drinkers and hard fighters. Both can be deeply racist both can be very warm culture
South was thinly settled until home air conditioning was invented

I wonder about that. Even in late 70s most dorm rooms in Deep South universities were not airconditioned. Cities were pretty densely populated. Need for a/c in the countryside was minimal. Fans were prevalent: huge electric ones with wooden blades, after they lost the slave-powered versions.

Re: Understanding the US - Again
Not all southern states are gaining population.
High-Tax State Exodus
High-Tax State Exodus
Then there’s California. Despite its balmy weather and thriving tech industry, the Golden State last year lost more people to other states than it gained from foreign immigration. Since 2010, a net 710,000 people have left California for other states. One reason is high housing prices, fueled by onerous land and zoning regulations, which have driven out thousands of middle-income families.
Jobs and businesses have also fled the state’s high taxes and regulation. A study this month by business relocation consultant Joe Vranich estimates that 1,800 businesses shifted jobs or capital out of California in 2016 and about 13,000 companies have left the state since 2008. Over the last decade $76.7 billion in capital and 275,000 jobs have moved out of the state.
While California’s population continues to grow because of its relatively high birth rate and foreign immigration, other states that are hostile to business have been less blessed. Nine states lost population last year including Alaska, Connecticut, Louisiana, Hawaii, Illinois, Mississippi, New York, West Virginia and Wyoming. Alaska, Louisiana, West Virginia and Wyoming are heavily dependent on the vagaries of energy prices, but the economic malaise in Connecticut, Illinois, Hawaii and New York is self-inflicted.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently blamed cold weather for the state’s population exodus, but last year frigid New Hampshire with no income tax attracted 3,900 newcomers from other states. Last year’s federal tax reform limited the deductibility of state-and-local taxes and may be driving more affluent households out of high-tax states, though it’s too early to have hard data. Immigration flows into New York City mask the economic debacle of upstate despite Mr. Cuomo’s corporate-welfare programs.
Illinois’s population has declined by 157,000 over the past five years, which is equivalent to the mid-sized city of Rockford. According to research outfit Wirepoints, more than 114,000 residents left the state on net in 2018 and nearly 1.5 million people since 2000. Cold weather? While Illinois’s population has declined by 0.8% since 2010, Indiana’s has grown 3.1% and Wisconsin’s by 2.2%.
These population shifts mean that several states including New York, Illinois and Minnesota are likely to lose House seats after the 2020 reapportionment. States that have been rapidly adding population like Arizona, Florida and Texas are likely to increase their representation. It’d be nice to think this would finally prompt Democratic politicians to rethink their anti-growth policies. But with state political cultures dominated by public unions and welfare spending, they probably require a much deeper crisis to face reality.

X Posted from the India-US thread.US President's rant regards our country's efforts in Afghanistan:
Trump mocks India’s prime minister Narendra Modi over library in Afghanistan: ‘I don’t know who’s using it’

That’s like, you know what that is? It’s like five hours of what we spend, and he tells it, and he’s very smart, and we’re supposed to say, ‘Oh thank you for the library’.
