Understanding the US - Again
Re: Understanding the US - Again
Many many public buildings in Texas with water damage. Why didn't they shut off main supply lines to buildings to minimize damages? At some point, frozen pipes were a forgone conclusion. Also, these buildings have multitude of shut off valves to localize damages. Now various cities would have to go through the trouble of handing out all sorts of contracts to fix things.

From the email, I received from Phreasceaux school district in North Dallas online classes will begin from Monday and in-person classes are scheduled to start on the 1st of March as of now. The problem is the event that occurred last week is more of once in a generational event. The last big freeze that occurred in 2011 during the super bowl was cold but not as this cold as this.darshan wrote:Many many public buildings in Texas with water damage. ‘Dark Money’ Helped Pave Joe Biden’s Path to the White House
‘Dark Money’ Helped Pave Joe Biden’s Path to the White House
resident Joe Biden benefited from a record-breaking amount of donations from anonymous donors to outside groups backing him, meaning the public will never have a full accounting of who helped him win the White House.
Biden’s winning campaign was backed by $145 million in so-called dark money donations, a type of fundraising Democrats have decried for years. Those fundraising streams augmented Biden’s $1.5 billion haul, in itself a record for a challenger to an incumbent president.
That amount of dark money dwarfs the $28.4 million spent on behalf of his rival, former President Donald Trump. And it tops the previous record of $113 million in anonymous donations backing Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in 2012.
For example, Priorities USA Action Fund, the super political action committee that Biden designated as his preferred vehicle for outside spending, used $26 million in funds originally donated to its nonprofit arm, called Priorities USA, to back Biden. The donors of that money do not have to be disclosed.
The Mighty Money (Almost $4 Billion) of Campaign 2020: QuickTake
Guy Cecil, the chairman of Priorities USA, was unapologetic. “We weren’t going to unilaterally disarm against Trump and the right- wing forces that enabled him,” he said in a statement.
Campaign finance laws, in theory, are supposed to limit the influence big money has over politicians. But the system has gaping loopholes, which groups backing Biden and other candidates, have exploited.
Future Forward PAC, a super-PAC that spent $104 million backing Biden, got $46.9 million from Facebook Inc. co-founder Dustin Moskovitz, $3 million from Twilio Inc. Chief Executive Officer Jeff Lawson and $2.6 million from Eric Schmidt of Alphabet Inc, the parent company of Google. But its biggest source of funds was its sister nonprofit, Future Forward USA Action, which contributed $61 million. The names of those who put up the $61 million don’t have to be disclosed.
The Sixteen Thirty Fund, a nonprofit that sponsors progressive advocacy, donated a total of $55 million in the 2020 election cycle to Democratic super-PACs, including Priorities USA Action Fund and Future Forward PAC, FEC records show. That total was much more than the $3 million it gave in 2018.
Amy Kurtz, executive director of the Sixteen Thirty Fund, said the surge of money to the group, which doesn’t disclose the names of its donors, included people who previously gave to Republicans or had not been engaged in politics.

China forces US diplomats to undergo anal swab tests, Biden administration calls it undignified: Reports
On Thursday, the Chinese government promised the United States government that they will stop carrying out anal swab tests on US diplomats to test for Covid-19 after Washington complained that such practices were ‘undignified’, as per reports.
According to reports in US media, the US State Department had protested with the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday after the Chinese authorities had subjected US diplomats to anal swab tests for Covid-19.
The authorities in a few Chinese provinces have been ordering anal swabs for people under quarantine, including travellers from abroad. China has now reportedly enforced anal swab tests for Covid-19 as they think throat or nasal swabs can miss infections.

Meanwhile, Kamala Harris is being groomed for a bigger role in foreign policy than most Vice Presidents would normally take:

Harris gets a crash course on foreign policy
The vice president is trying to build up her relationships with foreign leaders and profile on the world's stage.
After insisting for the last few months that she didn’t need a clear-cut portfolio in the Biden administration, Vice President Kamala Harris is now trying to carve out a niche in foreign policy, with the president’s encouragement.
...
Compared to the current occupant of the Oval Office, Harris comes to the vice president’s job as a neophyte on foreign policy. Biden developed relationships with foreign leaders over decades in Washington, including as a longtime member and later chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and as vice president under President Obama, which took him to more than 50 countries over eight years.
...
Biden wants Harris to catch up and has urged her to engage with foreign leaders directly and develop her own rapport with key U.S. partners. Another, more strategic reason for the encouragement: as the heir apparent to the Democratic Party—especially if Biden, who is 78 years old, doesn’t run for re-election—Harris needs to bulk up her foreign policy expertise, and fast.
...
The push started early: the day after the inauguration, Harris called the director-general of the World Health Organization to discuss the U.S. role in the global Covid-19 response. Since then, she has held solo calls with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron, given a speech at the State Department and on Tuesday participated in the first bilateral meeting of the new administration between the U.S. and Canada—an opportunity Biden himself was not afforded when he was vice president.
Harris has also had weekly lunches with Secretary of State Antony Blinken, a veteran foreign policy and national security official whose experience rivals Biden’s. And her national security advisers, Nancy McEldowney (former experience-- served as diplomat in Bulgaria, Turkey, Azerbaijan)and Philip Gordon (was senior fellow at Council for Foreign Relations, focused on Israeli-Palestinian issues; Middle East regional issues; Europe and the EU; Russia; Turkey; ... see a pattern here?) , are themselves long-serving diplomats.
An aide to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who worked on U.S.-Ukraine issues from 2019-2021 and tracked the presidential candidates and their positions closely, acknowledged Harris’ lack of experience in the foreign policy arena. But he said experience can be “overrated,” especially “in a rapidly changing world.” (Meaning: clueless newcomers are more likely to listen to "experts" who in turn can be fed nonsense by hired lobbyists-- thereby making it easier to push fact-free narratives and justify demands for US intervention in other countries.)
“Plus she’s got a great team working for her,” he added.
...
Halie Soifer, who served as Harris’ national security adviser while she was a senator, said it was “fitting that [Harris] would lead on foreign policy” as vice president.
“I see it as a continuum of her leadership in the Senate, which was focused mostly on domestic policy issues but included national security and was driven by values and principled policy that carry over into the international arena,” Soifer said.
...
World leaders and dignitaries, meanwhile, are already clamoring to start building relationships with Harris, who many believe could be president herself one day.
A European ambassador put it bluntly: “She will be seen by everyone as a potential president in waiting,” the ambassador said. “Much more than in previous presidencies.”
“As I said to the Vice President during our meetings, I look forward to welcoming [Harris] to Canada as soon as the pandemic will allow for it,” Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland told POLITICO. (it seems no one is happier about this development than the Khalistan-promoting Turd-eau regime in Canada.)

This year’s CPAC agenda features six panels in which China is a key theme, with titles ranging from “China Subverts America” to “Corporate America Surrendering to China.” The geopolitical challenges posed by China are also likely to come up in the speeches of several 2024 hopefuls — some of whom spoke Friday — using the conference to road-test new messages.

CPAC organizers have gone to great lengths to ensure China remains front-and-center in the GOP agenda with Trump no longer in office. One person familiar with the matter said there were as many as a dozen panels on China proposed by organizers and sponsors during the planning process for this year’s conference in Orlando. What made the cut ranges from a panel entitled “Big Tech is for sale and China and Russia are buying” to a discussion on corporate America’s coziness with Beijing. On Sunday, Trump will deliver a much anticipated speech in which aides say he will make the case that President Joe Biden is already “capitulating to Iran and China.”

Re: Understanding the US - Again
So after bombing Syria, Biden will apparently make an announcement on Saudi Arabia on Monday. The announcement will most likely be to denounce the Kashhoggi murder and KSA's royal family's complicity in the crime. The timing is curious because Kashhoggi's murder took place more than 2 and a half years ago and much water has flown under the bridge since then. While there was never much doubt that it was MBS who ordered Kashhogi's elimination, the question is what message is Biden administration trying to send to KSA by making public the report now and publicly criticizing one of US' closest allies in the region. Many openly anti-Israel individuals have also found their way to some key positions in Biden's administration, and it tookthe President more than 5 weeks after taking oath to finally call Benjamin Netanyahu. I think its only a matter of time before India is criticized and lectured about "secularism, hooman rights, Hindu supremacists, Kashmir" etc.
Re: Understanding the US - Again
Is there any reason to not interprete that as a drama? Oil prices are up too. Other than normal criticism, what's exactly that will be hurting KSA? US writes human rights against KSA on and off all the times and US public doesn't care either way as in dealing with chinese. If US takes some meaningful steps where KSA's hurt in a strategic manner then it would be worth tracking. More of a lip service to placate US public about how old school insider handles the business.
Re: Understanding the US - Again
Its not the usual UCIRF BS of religious persecution/human right abuse report, the Whitehouse will be commenting on KSA tomorrow which is quite a departure from the past. Either the "new establishment" in the US wants to reset all the old relationships or the "old establishment" in Saudi, much of which is apparently locked up in some 7-star hotel, wants US to undermine MBS.

The U.S. Labor Department’s inspector general said this week that roughly $100 million in fraudulent unemployment insurance claims were paid in 2020 to criminals who are already in jail. That’s a tiny share of the estimated tens of billions of dollars in jobless benefits states have given to identity thieves in the past year. To help reverse that trend, many states are now turning to a little-known private company called ID.me. This post examines some of what that company is seeing in its efforts to stymie unemployment fraud.

Bipartisan senators introduce bill to strip Biden of war powers https://politi.co/2PvaRWe via @politico
Sens. Tim Kaine and Todd Young on Wednesday introduced bipartisan legislation that would repeal decades-old authorizations for the use of military force in the Middle East, amid escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran in the region.
Kaine (D-Va.) and Young (R-Ind.) unveiled the measure as lawmakers have expressed frustration with President Joe Biden’s decision to launch airstrikes in Syria last week without first seeking congressional approval. It also comes just hours after an Iraqi military base housing U.S. troops and civilian contractors was hit by rocket attacks.
The bill would repeal the 1991 and 2002 authorizations that cleared the way for a prolonged military conflict in Iraq, culminating in calls from Democrats and Republicans alike to end the so-called “forever wars” in the region.
“Last week’s airstrikes in Syria show that the executive branch, regardless of party, will continue to stretch its war powers,” Kaine said. “Congress has a responsibility to not only vote to authorize new military action, but to repeal old authorizations that are no longer necessary.”
Sen. Tim Kaine speaks during a hearing with the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions committee.
DEFENSE
Democrats renew push for war powers overhaul after Biden’s Syria strike
BY CONNOR O’BRIEN
Congress has largely abdicated its constitutional authority to declare war, and presidents from both parties have used outdated authorizations to legally justify U.S. military action — including, and perhaps most notably, the 2001 authorization for the use of military force against al Qaeda and the Taliban, which was approved in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks. The Kaine-Young bill, though, only deals with the 1991 and 2002 measures, which are entirely focused on Iraq.
For example, the outdated authorizations have been used to give legal cover to U.S. military operations throughout the region, including those targeting ISIS and other jihadist offshoots in the region.
“Congress has been operating on autopilot when it comes to our essential duties to authorize the use of military force,” Young said. “The fact that authorities for both of these wars are still law today is illustrative of the bipartisan failure of Congress to perform its constitutionally-mandated oversight role.”
Senators from across the ideological spectrum signed onto the Kaine-Young bill as co-sponsors on Wednesday, including Sens. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), Mike Lee (R-Utah), Chris Coons (D-Del.) and Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa).
Kaine and Young have introduced similar efforts before, but Biden’s airstrikes in Syria breathed new life into their push. Lawmakers have raised concerns about the potential for a tit-for-tat use of military force that could result in a full-blown war between the U.S. and Iran, whose proxies in the region have long targeted American outposts.

No. There are committees, but they often find out after the action is initiated and have no say in the matter. It is not a parliamentary system and presidents have become more like imperial monarchs. You also have to remember that there are only 100 senators who are elected for 6 year terms and each of them think of themself as a potential president and most are unlikely to take any legislative action against the executive branch. Historically US presidents have overstepped their bounds and more so in the last 40 years.Cyrano wrote:Aren't there Defense committees in the Congress and Senate? It will need Herculean efforts by Barack Obama to keep all the three factions of Democrats together. While the Clinton faction has been the most financially potent, the Bernie faction has been the most vociferous and loud, dominated by Middle Eastern political interests, whereas the Biden-Obama faction has been the most influential. All these three factions are fighting for control within the Democrat establishment. Between the fight for supremacy between these three factions, the core essence of American democracy has been compromised within the Democrat party. While the party has done exceedingly well against Republicans at the polls, but they have been completely destroyed from within due to the political differences among these three factions. If it were not for Obama, the party would have lost to the Republicans in 2020. The Biden Presidency was decided way early in 2019 itself by the Obama faction of Democrats. Many analysts, who had good connections with the “establishment”, had predicted a Biden-Harris administration accurately.
