no, Cohen's plea alone will not bring him down. the base doesn't care. cohen has basically said that 'a candidate directed him to perform a criminal act' without naming him. his lawyer however has named him. now we need to see if cohen will testify. Giuliani is busy painting cohen as a well known lawyer liar and therefore seeking to discredit anything he says. Cohen's deal is with southern district of new York (preetji's old haunt) and the president cannot pardon him for anything he has done against New York state law

manafort being found guilty is going to be more interesting to watch. his next trial is coming up soon

the more likely effect will be that more suburban areas will swing democrat in the mid terms

discussing what is already circulating in media means one has lost the plot. Analysis should be done on those things that are not discussed in media, and which happen away from plain sight because that is where the action is. Easiest thing is to follow media discussions and give ones perspective on those discussions in an open forum, when a manipulative media has already cleverly divided people into camps without their realizing and people can only respond on lines laid down by media managers.

manafort case is not as important as Cohen's. the latter has a potential to cause lot of heartburn to DJT. manafort will be get a presidential pardon. almost surely.

How the United States Should Confront China Without Threatening the Global Trading System

and
https://piie.com/commentary/op-eds/trum ... ent-really
Trump's trade war with China has everyone confused. Here's what America's president really wants.

As the price for lifting Chinese tariffs, the Trump administration has issued an all-encompassing set of demands so vague and extensive and confusing that Beijing is unlikely ever to meet them.

One conclusion is clear: Trump's ill-considered trade war is not intended to achieve fair trade through negotiation or change Chinese behavior. Rather the aim is to erect stiff trade barriers that remain in place for many years, blocking or curbing all Chinese imports and discouraging US firms from ever outsourcing operations on Chinese territory.

Why is that the only logical assumption flowing from Trump's trade actions?

do not follow media in analysis on a strategic forum, media is just for time pass and mass delusion. Like for instance the Russia time pass on CNN/ABC etc.

So is this someone following their instincts?
The relevant concept is consciousness of guilt. We have all the evidence about various contacts between the Russian government and its cut-outs and the Trump campaign. We know about the Trump Tower meeting. We know about the meetings with George Papadopoulos. We know about Michael Flynn’s immediate move to start managing the payoffs to the Russia within hours of President Trump’s surprise win. We know there was “collusion”; we don’t know how high it went or just what Trump’s role was. Somehow we’re expected to believe that Trump himself was never informed about any of these actions. And that’s there’s no more to be uncovered in a truly unfettered public investigation. That’s a fascinating cat and mouse game. It will be fascinating to cover as a news story. It doesn’t matter for understanding what happened.

Here is where consciousness of guilt becomes so straightforward. From the very beginning the President has used every power at his disposal to stop investigations into what happened. He tried to end the investigation into Michael Flynn. He demanded loyalty and protection from the head of the FBI. He fired the head of the FBI because of the Russia probe. He told us it was about the Russia probe. He tried to fire Robert Mueller. He tried to bully Jeff Sessions into resigning so it would be easier to neutralize the investigation. He has been at more or less constant war with the FBI and the Intelligence Community. He openly dangles pardons to thwart the investigation. According to a Washington Post article published today, he’s now pushing ahead with revoking the security clearances of various former officials who were tied to the origins of the Russia investigation. He now says it’s about the Russia probe. In ordinary life, such flagrant and on-going efforts to prevent the truth from coming out are a clear sign of guilt. We rightly demand a higher standard before the criminal law because that is about taking away someone’s liberty. That’s not the case here. We’re only talking about taking away or restraining the power we have given him to use on our behalf.

habalji

short of me sitting in the oval office and/or trump tower and listening to all the conversations myself, I have to rely on a range of reports to present me with the situation

I do however apply my own filters and logic and reasoning to what I read/hear and come to my own conclusions

the question then is more about - do you believe group A of respondents or group B?

at the moment in America and also on this forum, there is a strong sentiment towards group B is right no matter what I hear from group A and vice versa. I see little evidence of people saying the truth = fn(A,B)

I don't think it's possible to neatly firewall the two.

What we are seeing in the US now is, I'm sure everyone can accept... unprecedented, during our lifetimes. In fact it is the first Manthan period that I am old enough to directly remember witnessing.

We gain a lot of Understanding of the US by observing exactly how the American ecosystem of political power, social discourse, financial machinery, communications networks etc. respond in this unprecedented time. It is the most "unguarded" moment for America, when internal churning is so strong that they cannot fully blanket their integral, structural issues with a carefully curated brand image for outsiders.

I do not see how we can dispense with US internal politics entirely while taking advantage of this unique opportunity to observe America in its (closest to natural) state.

good example of hybrid war - id what causes the most anxiety and cracks in target society and work on that

CNN
(CNN)Russia's meddling online went beyond the 2016 US presidential election and into public health, amplifying online debates about vaccines, according to a new study.

The recent research project was intended to study how social media and survey data can be used to better understand people's decision-making process around vaccines. It ended up unmasking some unexpected key players in the vaccination debate: Russian trolls.
The study, published in the American Journal of Public Health on Thursday, suggests that what appeared to be Twitter accounts run by automated bots and Russian trolls masqueraded as legitimate users engaging in online vaccine debates. The bots and trolls disseminated both pro- and anti-vaccine messages between 2014 and 2017.

Why India Should Be Rooting For Trump In His Efforts To Weaken The US Dollar
https://swarajyamag.com/economy/why-ind ... -us-dollar

The reasons are simple: the dollar’s strength matters for India because it is the currency in which most of our imports and exports are invoiced. Globally more imports than exports are invoiced in dollars, though the dollar dominates invoicing on both sides of trade.

According to recent data, dollar-invoiced exports are 3.1 times the dollar’s underlying share in exports; in the case of imports, the multiple is 4.7 times. Moreover, the dollar is also the main external reserve held by most countries.

The downside of a weak dollar is that our foreign exchange reserves will have a lower rupee value, but this will be balanced by a reduction in the value of our dollar-denominated external debt. As against around $ 400 billion in reserves, our external debt was much higher, at $529 billion, as at the end of March 2018.

Our export sector will lose some earnings, but our oil-dependent economy will gain more. We are probably marginally better off with a cheaper dollar.

More important, from a longer-term perspective, the world needs to lower its dependence on one currency for its trade and reserves. Currently, the dollar constitutes nearly 62 per cent of the world’s official reserves, while the euro has around 20 per cent, sterling and yen 4.68 per cent and 4.81 per cent, and the Chinese yuan 1.39 per cent.

Clearly, the Chinese yuan’s role needs to grow and the dollar’s shrink, so that the lopsided dependence on the dollar for trade invoicing ends.

This cannot happen if the dollar stays strong forever, and remains the world’s sole safe haven currency.

India should support Trump in his efforts to weaken the dollar.

Sadly, Mr. Jagannathan does not specify what "rooting for" exactly means and, assuming it is actionable, how it can be achieved (also assuming that it is deemed to be achieved). Spend more than $24 billion propping up currency? Looks like somewhat of a filler article.

In his last two decades he lost the plot. Palin, ISIS... (yes he blatantly wanted to go to war with Russia in order to complete the genocide in Syria!!) A good life I suppose, recalled to Base as his target sense started getting disoriented. Very good thing that he did not become POTUS.

No friend of India, I don't know why we care in this dhaga. Brainwashed in Cold War US/Paki military schools, he never opened or reset his mind after return from POW camp, and continued to blindly support Pakis. I assume there is ro-dho in pindi todin. He is the one, when asked after 9/11/01 why US was dealing with Pakistan instead of bombing the pakistan out of them, that

But we have to play it.

A stupid excuse to continue the sweetheart deals between US jarnails/MIL-Ind Complex and Paki Jarnails. Thousands have died, untold misery caused by that unforgiveable act of cowardice, stupidity, and lack of care for humanity. He should have argued for an all-out nuclear attack on Pakistan and put an end to the misery.
Just as untold hundreds of thousands have been killed and tortured in Syria because of him and people like him. I am sure they're waiting for him Up There or Down There.

UB,

Well said.

McCain and other influential US officials in power, who were indoctrinated in the 1950s to mid 1980s, had/have a negative view about India. The youngest of these people are now in their early 60s and will be gone from US government in the next 10 years or so. By 2030 when India has a $10 trillion GDP will be another matter. Historically the US has seen other rising powers as adversaries and in the case of China that may be so. However this is the first time in human history that we are witnessing the rise of a major power, a resurgent India, that does not seek out conflict with the other powers around the globe. Rather it seeks to work within a fair global framework.

An American friend asked me where do I expect to see India's position in the world 50 years from now? I told him that the problem of roti, kapada, makan has been resolved and India is on the path to resolve bijli, pani, sadak. It will not be one of cities paved with gold or the mightiest armies on earth, but I hope it will be one where we can seek out enlightenment, not just of metaphysical questions, but an enlightenment where we quantitatively understand the universe around us and make life better for all on the planet.

Wow! I had never seen this article. As balanced an article as I have ever seen from the Bhesht.

Was looking for WTH "Task Fauj 74" was. Another flop like Son McCain I see.

Only big flaw I saw was Anthony Mascarenhas being described as a Paki. Had he been one, he would not have been allowed to ride on an IA tank into Dhaka, but maybe slung under it.

Clearest case for hanging the genocidal racist oiseule Kissmyassinger. Must-read for BRFees. How Jewish people have tolerated this scum for this long is beyond me. A disgrace to the species Homo Sapiens. I guess they too have their Pankaj Mishras and Arundhoti Roys and Sadanand Dhumes.
I too have read that the Soviet fleet did mess up the US fleet. Hadn't read about subs surfacing in front of Enterprise with torpedo tubes opened. That was a lot closer to WW3 than the Cuban missile crisis. No wonder there is no record to be found of it in US Navy records.

Saved the IAF from having to launch the suicide pilots who were ready for missions to stop TF74 if necessary.

It documents the fact that there was SOME independent thinking - and foot-dragging - by US SD and Pentagon, even in a wartime.

Also come to think of it, that was the peak of the Soviet Union's credibility.
