Iraq, libya etc are not foreign policy failures because what if the unofficial, undeclared goal was to replace stable regimes with destabilization.

I think USA wanted to do Sunni vs Sunni vs Shia.
Then replace sunni Turkey Erdogan's with gulen and bring MBS as liberal in second Sunni and make two liberals fight.
Unfortunately both Sunni vs Sunni instead of becoming liberal became islamists and went bonkers. just like taleban Al Qaeda and Isis before them.

Now what will USA do?

America Should Let China Lose The Trade War Gracefully
Oct 25, 2018
China has more to lose in the Trade War game, and, therefore, it will have no choice but to concede to Washington’s demands. But it must lose the trade war gracefully, as was the case with the US-Japan trade war back in the 1980s.
“When China entered the war, the question became ‘who will lose more’," says Renee Mu, a currency analyst for DailyFX. “That's why China tried hard to avoid the war, until the first US tariff move on $34 billion Chinese goods went into effect on July 6. “
Once, the ‘first shot” of the trade war was fired, it set off three scenarios, according to Mu.
A ‘win-win’ scenario: the US and China could reach a consensus on major trade disputes, and the impact to both economies would be limited. This has failed.
A ‘lose-lose more’ scenario: disputes could stay within the area of trade, but the US and China remain unable to reach a deal to avoid major tariffs.
A ‘lose more-lose more’ scenario: political issues could get involved in trade disputes and expand the scope of the disputes. Like the intensification of South China Sea disputes.
“Based on US Vice President Mike Pence's recent speech, the trade war is moving from scenario 2 to scenario 3,” adds Mu. “The longer China stays in this trade war, the more it will lose; same for the US. China's slowing growth may make it less resilient than before: the third-quarter GDP came in at 6.5% today, weaker than 6.6% expected.” Meanwhile, China isn’t well prepared to fight a trade war with America, as it tries to cope with the “middle income trap” and the “Lewis turning point.” The income trap is a situation where an emerging economy’s growth rate slows down as it reaches middle income. The Lewis point is a situation where the excess labor trapped in agriculture shrinks, pushing wages higher, and eroding the country’s competitive advantage in labor intensive industries.
Chinese labor has become expensive vis-à-vis India, Vietnam, and Indonesia. And that places additional pressure on the country’s slowing growth.
That’s why China has begun blinking in the trade war.

Maybe it was the one addressed to SeeEnnEnn/EnnYTee based on experience of ppl writing Letters 2 Editors, on unlikelihood of them actually opening any mail. (JUST KIDDING!!!!)

Sayoc also was arrested in April 1999 in North Carolina on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle, said Angie Grube, a spokeswoman for the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office. But the district attorney's office dismissed the charges, said Tim Ayock, spokesman for police in the town of Matthews.
The arrest happened when a Matthews officer "stopped to help a broken-down vehicle and it turned out to be a stolen vehicle," Ayock said.
It's not clear why the charges were dismissed, Ayock said. Charlotte-Mecklenburg district attorney's office spokeswoman Meghan McDonald declined to comment about the case.
• At the arrest scene Friday morning, a van in Plantation was towed away to Miramar, Florida, where an FBI field office is located, a law enforcement official said. The van's exterior features images of President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence as well as a "CNN Sucks" sticker, video footage shows.

Clearly an agint.

Things have changed since then, apparently. Per someone who knows, Unabomber was caught because he was the only one in the nbd who could read or write. Relatively easy. But here a "Usual Suspect" has been nailed with amazing speed 1 week before erecshun, and not a single bum went off. The one that was not a dud was guaranteed to not be delivered. The guy obligingly had a van plastered with TrumpPence stickers. In fact:
These angry right wing men have been openly encouraged to act on those lies, even as late as this very morning when Trump was tweeting his doubts that the bombs were real. Sadly, the new and dangerous dynamic of political violence in America is that it is now promoted and encouraged by the President of the United States. We must vote out of office all enablers of this man and the violent culture he instigates and nurtures. There are millions and millions of us who will never be intimidated, who will never back down, and who will show up on Election Day.”
(Michael "Farenheit 911") Moore is responding to reports of a white van found in Florida linked to Cesar Sayoc Jr., who was arrested Friday in connection with a series of bombs mailed to CNN, prominent Democrats and critics of President Donald Trump. On the van is a collage of stickers of Trump and many of his familiar catchphrases including “dishonest media” and “CNN sucks.” Moore’s photo was among the images.

Something smells and its' not the swamp gas.
"Fourth Protocol"? How does he expect to get pardoned when donkeys win the House too?

wow this deep state is deeper and statier than thought..

they planted a man in trump rallies, they even made him wear MAGA hat, knowing that there will be pictures taken. And then made him act as such a supporter of trump that the man's attorney is saying that the man "found a father in Donald Trump".

anyways, and then it's revealed that the deep state had hacked twitter or used its moles in twitter to send death threats to many people who are anti-trump..I am sure that they wanted a trail of evidence of hatred to prove the false flag theory. Because what is the first thing that would come to mind when we see evidences to something...We fit it into our foregone conclusion. So, all these must be some elaborate pre-planned stuff to malign poor victim Trump.

With all due respect, the ppl who want high SNR can always read CNN and BBC .... or THE WIRE about India.... JUST KIDDING. Back when I used to go home on vacation as a <10yr old, I used to imagine that I had control of the Cochin Express using the window latch. Posts on BRF have about the same level of influence, so at least I post here for the fun and chai-biskoot - same as sitting in a bar and watching the drunken brawls develop over nothing. Ppl who come here and get Offended, or Feel that their anonymous browsing presence is disrespected by stuff that is beneath their stratospheric IQ, have my standard greeting in awed worship: :P

But that's not what I came here to post, after a long flight back to Ulan Bator. Between the mail-dud-bum caper and this mass shooting in a synagogue (I didn't check but I assume the shooter is dead?) the elephants seem to have burned their own asses. Quite fitting that they are undone by right-wing extremist wackos. Brings back the old song:

Just a thought b4 I go..
A lesson 2 b learned...
Traveling twice the speed of sound
It's e-Z 2 b burned

They sure have been burned. By their own kind.

Except they weren't traveling twice the speed of sound, they have been trying to emulate the Pakiban. Shame, too. Just noticed todin that gasoline price in Ppl's Lepubric of California is $3.899 per gallon vs. $2.55 for the same thing in a state that has no refinery. New Donkeystani House will bring high gas prices I suppose.

Donald Trump turns down India's invitation for Republic Day
This comes at a time when relations between the countries are not in the best of health.
New Delhi, October 28, 2018
US President Donald Trump has turned down India's invitation to be the chief guest during the Republic Day Parade. This comes at a time when relations between the countries are not in the best of health. The US had recently issued warning against India if it goes ahead with signing the S-400 missile system deal with Russia. India signed the deal for five such systems when Russian President Vladimir Putin visited India earlier this month. Besides this, the Trump administration has been threatening India with sanctions if it continues to procure oil from Iran. India continues to import oil from Iran.
India Today TV has learnt that the reason cited by the Trump administration to turn down the Republic Day invite is that President Trump has other pressing engagement on the same date. Trump reportedly has to deliver the State of The Union (SOTU) address and its timing conflicts with the Republic Day celebrations. However, in 2015, when the then US President Barack Obama visited India for Republic Day, the date of the SOTU address was postponed. The date of the address is not fixed and but has to be made between January 22 and the first week of February.

I think it is a case of Trump changing his mind after he instructed State Department to say 'yes' to the Indian Ambassador. Diplomacy is conducted in such a way that an invitation for a specific event would never be issued unless there was concrete assurance that should such an invitation be issued it would be accepted.

Yes, you are correct POTUS is not supposed to change his mind without a great change in the conditions. Could it be that he wants to avoid coming to India with US sanctions in place from November? Or arms negotiations are failing and India is refusing to buy the goodies, he does not want to reward India with his presence? The true picture will come out with time.

Understanding 1488:

1488 is a combination of two popular white supremacist numeric symbols. The first symbol is 14, which is shorthand for the "14 Words" slogan: "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children." The second is 88, which stands for "Heil Hitler" (H being the 8th letter of the alphabet). Together, the numbers form a general endorsement of white supremacy and its beliefs. As such, they are ubiquitous within the white supremacist movement - as graffiti, in graphics and tattoos, even in screen names and e-mail addresses, such as aryanprincess1488@hate.net. Some white supremacists will even price racist merchandise, such as t-shirts or compact discs, for $14.88.

Guptaji,
Strangely, I have not come across 1488 at all. But the number 88 is common among White gangs in prison (Aryan Brotherhood, Peckerwood). Numbers are quite significant among prison gangs/disruptive groups. For example, 415 (Bay Area Kumi, 415 is the area code), 13 or M (Surenos)and 14 or N (Norteno). These are often tattooed on their body as a display of affiliation.

Yes 88 is well known. Hispanic gangs use code words too to mark their territory with graffiti like animals such as tigers do for territory marking with pee. Norteno did to my house fence in small graffiti and we had to call city to come and remove. After that I street graffiti on roads with meaning and city maps in different angle :)

Shyamji,
You are quite right to have the city involved. Removing the sign/ painting over it yourself may have been taken as a sign of disrespect: this is called “Puto out”, often done by rival gangs claiming that territory. A gang member will tell you that their primary reason for existence is to protect the "hood". The gang-signs. Gang tattoos, writings etc. are diligently researched out and the meanings are understood by a group of officers under a gang coordinator in every CDCR prison. These give intelligence on drug dealing, other illegal activities and large scale riots that are a part of the CDCR. There is a process in which each gang member is validated and removed. The knowledge gained is then often passed to the police.

I know where I have seen the present events predicted:
1) "R Document" where the Eph Bee Eye director decides to become dictator. He causes a string of terrible attacks, which take out the Chief Justice and others. Serves to get votes for a constitutional amendment to suspend individual freedoms.
2) "TELEFON" starring Charles Bronson. A set of pre-programmed ppl are sent out into the US from Soviet Union. Each one gets a phone call that triggers him/her to go out and commit a terrorist act. Mostly destroying infrastructure.

Understanding the US - Again

Postby Peregrine » 29 Oct 2018 03:15

America is edging closer to civil war - Niall Ferguson

It’s nearer midnight than we thought on America’s Doomsday Clock

At the beginning of the Cold War, the artist wife of the physicist Alexander Langsdorf came up with the image of the “Doomsday Clock”. It appeared in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists to illustrate the fear of many physicists, including some who had been involved in the creation of the atomic bomb, that a “technology-induced catastrophe” might be terrifyingly close. Midnight on the Doomsday Clock meant nuclear armageddon.

For many years it was the bulletin’s editor, Eugene Rabinowitch, who decided where the hands on the clock stood. After his death a committee took over, meeting twice a year to adjust the clock. During the Cold War the closest it came to midnight was in the years 1953-9, when the Doomsday Clock showed two minutes before midnight. The scientists also thought the years 1984-7 were pretty hairy: it was three minutes to midnight for four straight years.

All of which goes to show how absurd such exercises are. No matter how many reputable scientists endorsed the Doomsday Clock, historians today agree that the most dangerous moment in the Cold War was the Cuban Missile Crisis. But the Doomsday Clock was at seven minutes to midnight throughout 1962 and went back to 11.48pm the following year. Rather disconcertingly, the atomic scientists currently think we are back to two minutes to armageddon today.

I have no doubt that somewhere in academia someone is busy devising an American civil war Doomsday Clock. Any day now they’ll publish it under the headline “Two minutes to Fort Sumter”. But just how close is the United States to the kind of internecine slaughter that began when Confederate forces opened fire on South Carolina’s best-known fort in April 1861?

As I’ve argued on this page before, there is a kind of cultural civil war already being fought on social media. With the mid-term elections just over a week away, that culture war gets more febrile by the day. (I especially enjoyed the latest self-flagellating ravings of the professor at Emory University who decided to denounce himself for sexist thoughtcrimes. He really would have enjoyed Mao’s Cultural Revolution.)

Of course, the culture war is no more a real war than the trade war Donald Trump has launched against China. Nevertheless, the news last week that amateurish pipe bombs had been posted to a dozen of the president’s best-known critics, including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, the hedge fund billionaire George Soros and the actor Robert De Niro, provided the cue for new prophecies of a second American Civil War.

The arrest on Friday of a Florida man named Cesar Sayoc, 56, was greeted with cries of “Gotcha!”. His van was covered in pro-Trump stickers including one reading “CNN sucks”.

“Trump owns this!” declared a normally sober Washington correspondent. I wonder. I don’t much like Trump’s regular criticisms of the mainstream media and occasional glorification of body-slamming. But a direct causal relationship to a nut posting a bunch of homemade bombs?

Strange how in June last year the same journalist omitted to tweet, “Sanders owns this!” after the Republican congressman Steve Scalise and three other people were shot and wounded by James Hodgkinson, a left-wing supporter of Bernie Sanders. You may say that Sanders’s rhetoric was never as inflammatory as Trump’s, but these are fine distinctions. In 2016 Sanders called Trump “particularly dangerous and un-American”, accusing him of “bigotry”. In July of this year he called Trump “our idiot president”.

Yesterday’s massacre at a synagogue in Pittsburgh makes matters much worse. Trump is no anti-semite, but some alt-right elements routinely abuse Jews. But then again, the hard left has its anti-semites too.

That people on both sides of the political divide are using intemperate language is undeniable, even if the left will always insist the other side is worse. That there is a potential for an increase in US political violence seems clear. By European standards there are terrifying numbers of lethal weapons in private hands. But civil war?

Some of the people who make this argument can be dismissed as scaremongers. When a Canadian novelist fantasises about Trump being assassinated, the United States tearing itself apart and all the nice Americans moving to Canada, it’s better to avert your gaze. Same drill when a marine turned chat show host calls for red states to secede if a future Democratic administration comes for their guns.

But when a colleague at the Hoover Institution, the historian Victor Davis Hanson, warns that we are “at the brink of a veritable civil war”, we all need to pay attention. The same goes for the National Review’s Reihan Salam, whose new book argues that without root-and-branch immigration reform, the US will come apart at the seams. I also take seriously the work of Peter Turchin, who has been arguing for some time that several leading indicators of political instability (notably inequality) are set to peak around 2020, making the US “particularly vulnerable to violent upheaval”.

Hanson’s argument is that the tensions arising from globalisation, the internet, campus leftism and illegal immigration have led to an ideological split that is also geographical. The toxic atmosphere puts him in mind not only of the 1850s but also of the 5th century BC, when “stasis” (meaning internal strife) tore apart the ancient Greek city states.

Like our colleague Morris Fiorina, I am inclined towards the optimistic view that most normal Americans find the culture war exhausting. As I argued here last week, the evidence suggests that the extreme right and extreme left are two noisy minorities. They would be lost without one another, but they turn everyone else off.

Hanson, who still sees further polarisation as avoidable, makes a crucial point, though. History repeatedly shows that “zealous and sometimes warring tiny minorities can escalate tensions, nullify opposition and bully the silenced majority to sanction — or at least not object to — violence”.

The most troubling analogy I heard last week was between the 2020 presidential election and that of 1860. My interlocutor noted that Abraham Lincoln won a four-way race in 1860. If a centrist, say the Ohio governor John Kasich, runs as an independent, if the Democrats nominate a progressive (Kamala Harris, anyone?) and if Trump seeks re-election, we could have a somewhat similar situation.

The implication is not comforting. For the election of 1860 made clear that the divisions over the issue of slavery had become unbridgeable. Lincoln’s victory was swiftly followed by the secession of seven Southern states and the formation of the Confederacy.

True, there is no single issue in today’s culture war. True, the time on the civil war Doomsday Clock looks more like 11.08 than 11.58. But when I tell you who drew the 1860 analogy to my attention, you’ll know why I’m troubled. Reader, it was Steve Bannon.

In Trump words, "this is Fake news/analysis". If there is something that changed is ugliness of politics that is under the veil of plastic beauty slowly showing up for unwashed. There is no civil war to fight against between two groups. Yes there is appearance of more violence from redneck groups, domestic and foreign terrorists, inner city black gangs, Hispanic gangs, antifa and fascist groups sponsored by whites from wall street and DC. Uptick or downtick of such violence is always there. America is always the beautiful and land of brave with ugliness covered under the carpets.

A map of the Alt-Right.
https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archi ... er/574219/
I recently analyzed about 30,000 Twitter accounts that self-identified as alt-right or followed someone who did for VOX-Pol, the European academic network studying extremism on social media. The results were illuminating.

The alt-right is often described as a movement or ideology. It is better understood as a political bloc that seeks to unify the activities of several different extremist movements or ideologies. While it is international in reach, its center of gravity can be found in the United States. Because the alt-right is a bloc, it has to be understood by mapping its components, and analyzing how they overlap and how they differ. (Not everyone who associates with the bloc online self-identifies as alt-right.)

Arun, Last weekend was listening to NPR Hidden Brain episode featuring Prof Joan Williams of UC Hastings.
She has some interesting observations on angst.

One interesting fact is 500 counties voted for Clinton and 6500 counties for DT.
The 500 counties have 2/3 of the GDP and the 6500 counties the rest.
So economic divide is huge.
Then she adds the social factors contributing to the divide.

I saw many allegories to Indian Americans in California.

Try to listen to the podcast.
I plan to buy her book.

I think DT lost everything today.
He started fires he could not control.
Trade war, violence, make enemies of friends, and after House is lost next 2 years will be probe after probe.

Opposite of Dale Carnegie famous book.
