a rising china is hitting bottlenecks in terms of a resistence from incumbent powers to creating its 'greater east asian co-prosperity sphere' - it needs resources for its factories and land for its beggars. there is only so much meat to feed all the hungry lions out there.
some will have to sleep hungry and 'two tigers cannot rule same forest' (pra-cheen saying)

same dynamics that led to japan preparing for and waging first war on china mainland/korea/taiwan/manchuria and then oceanic WW2 to kick the british and dutch out of resource rich malaysia and indonesia. takeover of resource poor philippines was just a defensive screen on its trade routes.

time to keep our powder dry and fires(agni) all warm and polished. its coming, boys. frustrated by allied naval power, they will probably try to lash out against india to raise national morale. placating the dragon by letting it beat up the slumbering elephant may be palatable to allies than fighting the dragon themselves. yindu lives are always cheap.

when pie is big and prosperity (or hope of it) is all around..people are magnanimous, courteous, polite, generous etc..

as soon as something becomes a resource that you have to fight for, and you get resentment that somebody else is getting it undeservedly, all the niceties goes away and the ugliness comes out.

my favorite example is how the behavior of american air travelers changed reg overhead space. before, they would let you put yours up and even help you, but moving theirs out. lot of pehle aap, no pehle aap stuff.

when airlines charged for check-ins, people started packing carry-ons and there was anxiety if you will find space. Then resentment happened because the non-status people would board after status people, only to see the space above their heads already taken. Pushing and jostling happens now to make sure you can put your luggage near you, instead of putting it in the end, or checking it in at the gate. Now, no more niceties, small talk, helping people etc. Now it is more like our folks trying to get a bus seat when bus comes to the stand.

The myth that the goras are by nature civil is coming apart. WTO which was to continue the gora supremacy slowly resulted in goras losing trade and other advantages to non goras. In the next two decades Asia will take over the primacy in the world. The question is what west will do about it beforehand. Better keep our selves prepared.

I'm not a US citizen but I feel qualified to opine thanks to my Bachelor Degree in Common Sense from the University of Being 40 Years Old that when it comes to a shutdown of the US government, the much revered US Constitution almost got it right but failed miserably - like a saddle point in math that you can approach confidently but can also easily overshoot drastically.

Image
A saddle point [red dot]

A shutdown as a pressure tactic that forces both sides to come to an agreement makes total sense. However, if the point of letting the citizen pay the price was to build voter pressure on elected representatives, then the learned folks who wrote the US Constitution understood nothing about the OODA loop.

Voters don't have the choice of a referendum to break the impasse and they don't have the choice of triggering fresh elections. The only people empowered to do anything are the elected representatives and they're also a close knit group. The OODA loop for the elected representative is much, much tighter and faster than the OODA loop for the voter.

So, if anyone should be paying a price for a government shutdown, it shouldn't be the citizen, the Judiciary or the Executive. It should only be the Legislature.

Representatives of the Legislature should be quarantined in the Capitol Building, have their salaries furloughed, given food stamps to afford basic necessities, and allowed to take their own sweet time to come to an agreement. In the meanwhile, the Judiciary, Executive and the citizen should continue to uphold existing laws and continue to receive federal salaries.

When the Legislature manages to break the impasse and is let out of the Capitol Building to bask in sunlight and breathe in fresh air, they can tell the rest of the country what new laws they created. The voter can then decide during the next elections if they want to change channels from the three-ringed circus to George Orwell's 1984.

US is not a democracy anymore.

Voter suppression with harsh voter id requirements, restricting voting facilities, voting times etc
Gerrymandering
low information voters, in a bubble (fox news)
single issue voters bombarded with expensive campaigns funded by moneyed elites, easily triggered by that issue while made to not pay attention to anything else etc

have all made sure that

1. congress with very low approval can keep getting re-elected. Look at the approval ratings and the re-election percentage. It cannot be un-related. If people are discontent, it should reflect in results.

2. take any major issue - gun safety, military spending, min wage, etc - the will of the majority is not reflected by the legislative, but still the legislative is re-elected.

this is not a democracy. it is completely rigged and gamed.

Constitutional Republic wherein Constitution like the US has its own problems. The powerful will game the system and it is very difficult to change the system. It was all good till Golden Monkey came along and dems are gunning for identify politics. Now there is no rule of law left in the US political discourse which is either PC rubbish or EJ racist rubbish. I am surprised that there is so much debate on illegal immigration. But on the other-hand it is the same with illegal BDs in India with false docs. Ours is worst as BDs are peacefuls whereas in the US both are EJs.

No, you're wrong; and should consider if your version wasn't massaged by PR pros hired by these kid's parents.
In Mr. Sandmann’s statement, which was released by a public relations firm, he said he remained “motionless and calm” in an effort to defuse the situation.

“I realized everyone had cameras and that perhaps a group of adults was trying to provoke a group of teenagers into a larger conflict,” he said.
Granted, the situation was more complex than originally reported by shoddy CNN.

IMO this account encompasses more of the contextualized truth.
'A mob mentality'

To Jessica Travis, a Florida attorney who was at the memorial with her mother, the students looked out of control.

“The kids really went into a mob mentality, honestly,” she said, adding that she didn’t see any chaperones trying to control the situation. She said she heard one student tell the Hebrew Israelites to “drink the Trump water.”

Jon Stegenga, a photojournalist who drove to Washington on Friday from South Carolina to cover the Indigenous Peoples March, recalled hearing students say “build the wall” and “Trump 2020.” He said it was about that time that Phillips intervened.
Another member of the Indigenous Peoples March suggested Phillips start singing, the photographer said. Phillips played a prayer song on a drum as he walked toward the students.

Some of the students began doing a “Tomahawk chop” and dancing, the video shows. Phillips said he found it offensive, but kept walking and drumming.

Most of the students moved out of his way, the video shows. But Sandmann stayed still.

Asked why he felt the need to walk into the group of students, Phillips said he was trying to reach the top of the memorial, where friends were standing. But Phillips also said he saw more than a teenage boy in front of him. He saw a long history of white oppression of Native Americans.

“Why should I go around him?” he asked. “I’m just thinking of 500 years of genocide in this country, what your people have done. You don’t even see me as a human being.”

Stegenga described Phillips as emotional. “He was dealing with a lot of feelings, as he was being surrounded and not being shown respect,” the photographer said. “In Native American culture, respect of elders is everything. . . . It was a heartbroken feeling.”
Phillips said he blamed both the students and the Hebrew Israelites for what happened.

“If it wasn’t for those Israelites being there in the first place, this wouldn’t have happened,” he said. “And if it wasn’t for the lack of responsibility from school chaperones, this wouldn’t have happened either.”

Sandmann said Phillips bore responsibility, too.

“He locked eyes with me and approached me, coming within inches of my face,” the statement said. “ I did not speak to him. I did not make any hand gestures or other aggressive moves. To be honest, I was startled and confused as to why he had approached me. We had already been yelled at by another group of protesters . . . I was worried that a situation was getting out of control where adults were attempting to provoke teenagers.”

School officials and the Catholic Diocese of Covington released a joint statement Saturday condemning and apologizing for the students’ actions. “The matter is being investigated and we will take appropriate action, up to and including expulsion,” the statement said. In a column on the town website , Covington Mayor Joe Meyer declared that “The videos being shared across the nation do NOT represent the core beliefs and values of this City.”
There's lots of fault and blame to go around, including plenty for the supposed 'chaperones' of this clueless youth group, and of course the so-called "Isrealites" who were only there to provoke people with their mythology. Afterward, that smiling youth with the MAGA hat on admitted he was "confused" as to why the Native American was approaching him -- yet he remained steadfast despite being confused. For some reason which deserves examination, he felt the need to 'stand his ground', assuming it was his job to do so. Spin artists like that kid's PR firm will attempt to call it "Leadership", while many others will see it as "White Privilege".

Which is the case for any particular reader, depends on how much they buy into one "Tribe" or another, and I'm not referring to any bonafide "Native American-Indian" or "First Nations" peoples (as we refer to them here in Canada). By tribe, I mean "Left" or "Right", broadly speaking.

I reject any attempt to blame the "Native American" Marine Veteran Phillips. Basic courtesy for one's elders, would have made this whole thing a non-event. I can't blame Phillips for anything he did -- it's tragic that so many people gathered there, were deaf and blind to his lament.

It never was. Harsh voting requirements? If anything the US is too lax. In India you must show positive voter ID issued by the EC and your polling date is set. Most states in the US will allow early voting or absentee voting. Further, political parties are allowed to charter busses to bring people to the polls, something completely illegal in India. What about having polling stations in churches? Completely unethical and violation of separation of church and state. Ballot box stuffing is easy in the US too compared to India.

I agree about LIV and it isn't just Fox News. I would include CNN and MSNBC, Breitbart and Huffington Post too. They are the lifafa press beholden to political party and not unlike ruNDTV and TOIlet.

US (or Europe) is as corrupt and as venal as any other democracy. Indian democracy comparatively is getting better and this is due to it very slowly getting out of the clutches of dynasties.

However one always assumes that because US/West is materially rich, US also has great democracy. It isn't.

Case in point: The entire town of Paradise, CA went up in smokes and almost 80 people died. It was a firenado (read more at https://projects.sfchronicle.com/2018/c ... e-tornado/). Billions of dollars in damage. Tax payers will be left holding the bill.

In every other place this would have lead to resignation of the CM/Governor. Court enquiries ordered. There will be major hue and cry. And what is on the news? Trump's tweets. Everything else - suppressed.

Nobody asks the questions on why PG&E was behind in implementing safety protocols and hardware? Nobody is asking questions that the CEO of PG&E quietly resigned and was one of the major fund contributor to the current establishment in CA.

Or why nobody is asking questions on the need of UC contribution of @100k USD to Kamala Harris's campaign? Imagine the brouhaha if say IIM-A contributes Rs. 1 Crore to Modi's campaign?

Point is the system is as corrupt and as venal as any other democracy. Given that democracy is still better than any other form of government that was tried., in US it is less of government interfering in peoples' life (unlike the dynasty driven mai-baap sarkaar in India) that people feel that the polity is less corrupt.

If one has to understand US, desis must not be surprised that one finds it as corrupt, as venal and as exploitative when compared to Indian democracy*

*That is the *only* large & diverse democracy anyone has context of and/or experience with.

There is a ton of direct democracy due to the initiative and referendum process. If anything, this has reduced the importance and power of elected representatives. Election turnout rates below 50% (sometimes near 40%) indicate people don't generally disagree with the direction government is going in.

MOSCOW: A Belarusian escort who claimed she had proof of Russian collusion with Donald Trump's election campaign was freed from a Russian jail on Tuesday following her arrest last week, lawyers said.

Anastasia Vashukevich, also known as Nastya Rybka, was arrested alongside Alexander Kirillov, a self-styled sex guru, when the two arrived at Moscow's main airport following their deportation from Thailand last Thursday.

Vashukevich had been waiting to travel on to the Belarusian capital Minsk.

"The investigation made a decision to free them from jail with the obligation to appear" for further proceedings, Kirillov's lawyer Svetlana Sidorkina told AFP.

Vashukevich was deported from Thailand after pleading guilty to participating in a "sex training course".

She became famous after posting videos allegedly showing tycoon Oleg Deripaska and an influential Russian deputy prime minister on a yacht.

While in Thai prison, she said she had information about Russian meddling in the 2016 US elections.

Her lawyer Dmitry Zatsarinsky posted a video on Instagram Tuesday showing him and Vashukevich apparently in a car following her release.

"Nastya Rybka is free. We're going home," he says, as Vashukevich flashes a peace sign and laughs.

The decision was unexpected following a court ruling on Saturday to extend her detention.

Sitting in a glass cage during that hearing, Vashukevich told journalists she wanted to apologise to Deripaska and no longer wants to "compromise him" or publish a book on seducing oligarchs.

"I've had enough," she said.

from smh.com.au

“I felt that as a flight attendant, removing a passenger’s underwear was beyond the scope of my responsibilities,” the flight attendant told a news conference, where she was accompanied by reps from the Taoyuan Flight Attendants Union.

“I told him we couldn’t help him, but he started yelling. He told me to go in there immediately and threatened to relieve himself on the floor,” she said, according to the Daily Mail.

“As the passenger’s genitals were now exposed, one of my colleagues brought a blanket, which I used to cover his modesty,” she continued.

“But he very angrily slapped my hand away, saying he didn’t want it and only wanted me to remove his underwear so he could use the toilet.”

The man also insisted that they keep the door open because otherwise “he couldn’t breathe”.

The women managed to keep the door closed, but the man — whose weight was estimated to be 199kg — then refused to leave the bathroom unless they wiped his backside after he finished with his business.

The flight attendants refused at first but then decided to carry out the disgusting task so he wouldn’t remain in the lavatory.

But things took a turn for the worse when the chief attendant donned three pairs of latex gloves and began wiping him.

“He said, ‘Oh, mmm, deeper, deeper,’ and then accused my chief attendant of not properly cleaning his backside, requesting that she do it again,” she said.

“You can pull my pants back up now,” he finally said, according to the crew member.

The union decried what it described as blatant sexual harassment and asked that EVA sue the passenger, who had defecated in his underwear during a previous flight in May 2018, Focus Taiwan reported.

The union urged the airline to establish standard operation procedures, including making sure that disabled passengers are accompanied by a caretaker.

EVA said in a statement on Monday that flight attendants are allowed to refuse requests they consider inappropriate and that it is prepared to offer assistance, if needed, to sue the offensive passenger.

Hong Kong (CNN Business)Microsoft's Bing search engine has hit a wall in China.

"We've confirmed that Bing is currently inaccessible in China and are engaged to determine next steps," a Microsoft (MSFT) spokesman said Thursday. Bing was the last major foreign search engine operating in China after Google (GOOGL) pulled out in 2010.

Bing appears to have joined a growing list of global internet platforms that are shut out of China's huge market, demonstrating that even tech companies that submit to Beijing's strict internet censorship regime can still run into trouble in the country.
