Peregrine and falijee,

Was hearing on BBC radio that 7 Shias in a Karachi locality and about 140 Shias are missing (likely in TSPA custody0.

Further the reporter was saying could be related to involvement in Syria.
There is a Paki Shia brigade, of about 1500 of whom ~300 have died, fighting for Bashir Al Assad against the US backed and ISIS.

So something is cooking on the Shia front in Pakistan.

The story of Pakistan's 'disappeared' Shias

Image
CCTV images from a local mosque show 30-year-old Naeem Haider being led away in handcuffs by more than a dozen armed men. Some have their faces covered with masks, others are in police uniform.

It was the night of 16 November 2016. Mr Haider has not been seen since. Despite the CCTV video evidence both the police and intelligence services have denied in court that he is in their custody.

Mr Haider is one of 140 Pakistani Shias to have "disappeared" over the past two years, according to community activists. Their families believe they were taken into custody by the intelligence services. Over 25 of the missing, including Mr Haider, belong to Pakistan's largest city Karachi.
Community leaders though, say they have been told the men are suspected of links to a secretive militia in Syria, the Zainabiyoun Brigade, thought to be made up of around 1,000 Pakistani Shias fighting on behalf of the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
Rashid Rizvi is the head of the Shia Missing Persons Committee in Karachi. He has lead a number of protests in the city calling for the men to either be released or produced in court. He says most of the men were detained after returning from pilgrimage to the Middle East.

"Some representatives of the 'state institutions' came to meet me," he tells the BBC, using a euphemism for the intelligence services.

"They tried to convince us to end our protest movement… I asked them 'Why did you pick these men up?' They said, 'We think they've gone to Syria to fight against Daesh (IS) and al-Qaeda.'

The Spy Chronicles: Hot air and cold ignorance over Scotch whisky
SHUSANT SAREEN

POSTED IN FULL
The normal expectation from a book based on conversations between spy chiefs of two enemy countries is that this will have enough masala and revelations to set the pulse racing. Unfortunately, The Spy Chronicles: RAW, ISI and the Illusion of Peace, based on conversations between former R&AW chief, AS Dulat, and former ISI chief, Lt General Asad Durrani, does no such thing. letdown ! Agree 100%. So, these two are peddling "old snake oil" ! Aim is to sell books and make some money ! This looks like a "dig at Dulat" ! Like "hiding" OBL and Mullah Omar, passing nuclear technology to NOKO, sending fictitious invoices to Massa for approval etc etc Two Pakjabis( - unless Durrani is a full blooded Pathan ) enjoying a drink Did not know that Dulat was that uninformed. Maybe, he did not do "fact checking" of the book ! Dulat should have "employed" a fact checker, unless he "fact checked" when he was in a state of inebriation  Now Ganja in Pakiland is singing like a canary- spilling "state secrets" in front of the media to get his "revenge" so to say
Another take on the same book from the other side of the border

Chattering mynahs
Chattering mynahs

F.S. Aijazuddin

May 31, 2018

THIS book has to be read to be disbelieved. Spy Chronicles: RAW, ISI, and the Illusion of Peace has been co-authored by a former chief of Pakistan’s ISI (retired) Lt Gen Asad Durrani, and a former head of India’s RAW Amarjit Singh Dulat.

Such cross-border collaborations are not unknown. Two spring to mind: Diplomatic Divide by Dr Humayun Khan and G. Parthasarathy (2004), and then Divided by Democracy by Meghnad Desai and Aitzaz Ahsan (2005). Diplomats and politicians, however, are expected to talk to each other. Spies like Durrani and Dulat were paid to eavesdrop on one another, not to retire and then together chatter like mynahs.

The book is a candid record, culled by the Indian journalist Aditya Sinha from conversations held with and by Durrani and Dulat in such exotic locations as Bangkok, Kathmandu and Istanbul. Istanbul seems to be a magnet for secret rendezvous. Readers will recall Khurshid Kasuri’s revelations about his secret meeting there on the rooftop of the Topkapi Palace with his Israeli counterpart Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom in August 2005.

‘Spy Chronicles’ contains 33 chapters, some surprising, many incendiary.

This book would have been twice as long — over 170,000 words — had some thoughtful editor not conducted a surgical strike on the manuscript. Dulat’s motive? “The toxic, or the intoxicating, mix helped people like me, who had been in and out of hot seats, join post-retirement the ever-expanding club fatuously called ‘the strategic community’. No surprise, therefore, that some of us are bursting with wisdom that can hardly wait to be shared.” Durrani agrees. Both acknowledge that “there will be people in the fraternity who will say how did these s[-----] get so chummy: who was working for whom? After all we have each been a part of licensed skulduggery on either side”.

Dulat and Durrani closed off their book in March this year. It is a tribute to their professional skill that their former employers reacted to the book only after its release, as if unaware of its gestation.

Spy Chronicles contains 33 chapters, some surprising, many incendiary, a few embarrassingly disingenuous. (Read Chapter 3: ‘Brotherhood to the Rescue’ in which Dulat saves Durrani’s son stranded in Mumbai because of a visa violation.) This book reeks of alcohol. There are at least five references to the beneficial effect whiskey had on ‘lubricating’ discussions between the unabashed Indians and the bashful Pakistanis. To repeat E.M. Forster’s devastating review of the bibulous poet Dom Moraes’ book Gone Away, “one longs for a non-alcoholic edition”.

Many years ago, at a briefing session given by a senior officer of the ISI, someone asked him, had he been the DG RAW instead of DG ISI, what would he have feared most from the ISI? He reflected, then replied: “For obvious reasons I cannot give you an answer, but the very fact that RAW fears us is a measure of our success.”

Perhaps Dulat means it as a back-handed compliment to the ISI when he admits that “he would have loved being the DG ISI”. His greatest failure was not to be able to infiltrate the ISI, at least “at the level where it counts”.

Durrani confesses his failure was to not have recognised that the surge in freedom fighting in India-held Kashmir was not a wave of resentment but a tsunami of rebellion.

Spy Chronicles is to be ingested with a pillar of salt which would dwarf Lot’s wife. How does one check the veracity of Dulat’s recollection: “In Islamabad in 2011, when we got a bottle of Black Label (whiskey) from General Saheb’s car and had a drink in my room, he spoke to me about how it would be if we had an understanding. For instance, if Mumbai happened again, there would be an understanding that India would retaliate. And that it could be managed. That India could do what [Prime Minister Narendra] Modi did, a surgical strike. It was interesting. Here was a former ISI chief with a considerable reputation, suggesting to choreograph surgical strikes. How can a person get more candid?” Indeed. Candour, Dr Samuel Johnson’s once wrote, was “but another kind of indirect self-praise, and had its foundation in vanity”.

This book will undoubtedly attract many readers, none among them though widows and family members of those who martyred in Kargil and in Kashmir, or anywhere else in the name of India and Pakistan. They died so that their superiors could live and profit from such memoirs.

In December 1971, after the surrender in East Pakistan, senior generals called a meeting of their subordinates to explain away the debacle. A shoe was thrown at the then COAS Gen Hamid Khan. Retired Lt Gen Asad Durrani, HJ, HI(M), has thrown a shoe at his own service and at the self-respect of 220 million of his compatriots. They might prefer not to contribute to his shared royalties.

The writer is an author.

Hypocrite Imran Khan Who Has A World Wide Reputation Of Being A Romeo (And A "Sexual Harasser" - On line and Off line !) Now Forced To Expel A Convicted Rapist From His PTI Political Party

Imran Khan expels rapist of Pakistani actress Shabnam from PTI
ISLAMABAD – A politician from Punjab, who was convicted of raping a former film star Shabnam before being pardoned in Zia regime, has been expelled from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) hours after he was welcomed by the party chairman on Thursday. Farooq Bandial is one of those five rapists who gang-raped Shabnam, in 1979, in front of her husband and son. Along with his gang, he received death penalty which was overturned after the family of actress was forced to pardon the rapists.
Imran Khan is well known for packing and stuffing his PTI party with unsavory characters and turn coat politicos . This is one example, where it backfired badly .
The former PML-N stalwart was welcomed to the party by chairman Imran Khan on Thursday at Bani Gala, Islamabad.
Image
Immy And The Convicted Rapist !
Jharna Basak, known by the stage name Shabnam, is a Bangladeshi stage and film actress. Actor Waheed Murad introduced her to the Pakistani film industry by offering her a lead role in his film Samundar in 1968.
Image
Shabnam then and now !
She had to leave the film industry, as well as the country, following the shocking incident  .PTI spokesman Fawad Hussain Chaudhry has confirmed the party chief has taken notice of Bandial being part of the ‘Change’, adding the party will never compromise on ethical standards.
Shabnam is of Bengali origin. This sarkari paper is indirectly saying that she went back to East Pakistan ( now Bangladesh) and never set foot on Paki soil , after she got a "dose of Pakistaniyat" from Farooq Bandial ( now expelled from PTI Party ). One wonders what kind of "vetting process" is in place in the PTI party ( if such a procedure is indeed there!) when candidates are selected for nomination . It has often been rumored that the PTI Party is a one -man show where important decisions are made only by the Kaptaan ( Imran Khan) . This appears to be the case here as well

PS: At the height of the (female) "Me Too Movement" of 2017 a wave of sexual harassment accusations were leveled against thrice married Imran Khan by Paki Ayesha ( MNA Ayesha Gulalai ) as well as by other foreigners !!! As usual, the stories faded away due to the short attention span of the news cycles !

Shia Pakistani Fighters in Syria - APRIL 26, 2017

Image
Photo: A police vehicle patrols near the portraits of (L-R) Pakistan's President Mamnoon Hussain, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, displayed along a road during Rouhani's visit to Islamabad, Pakistan

Among Tehran’s Shia proxies participating in the Syrian civil war in defense of the Assad regime, the Pakistani Zeinabiyoun Brigade remains the most understudied. This may in part be due to the militia’s small size and limited contribution to the war, and because of the militia’s attempt to remain invisible to the prying eyes of Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

A systematic survey of information available in Persian language source material however, not only provides some insights into the history, leadership, composition, and performance of the Zeinabiyoun, but also explains the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps’s (IRGC) strategic objectives with establishing it.

Most of the open source information about the Zeinabiyoun originates from eight short articles in the July 23, 2016 issue of Panjereh, a monthly publication close to the IRGC. The articles appear to be provoked by the Islamic Republic Immigration authorities’ harsh treatment of Shia Pakistani volunteers for the war effort in Syria transiting Iran. The details are not known, but most probably, Iranian immigration authorities had rounded up Shia Pakistanis who—with the IRGC’s assistance—had illegally entered Iran en route to Syria.

In the most important article, a certain Abbas, who is presented as “one of those in charge of the Zeinabiyoun,” and may well be identical with Seyed Abbas Mousavi, the brigade’s chief commander, claims he and other Shia Pakistani activists were in touch with the IRGC Quds Force “for almost 15 years,” prior to establishing the Zeinabiyoun Brigade. In other words, contacts between “Abbas” and the IRGC were established in 2001, at the time of United States led invasion of Afghanistan and the collapse of the Taliban. This claim may be true of “Abbas,” but organic ties between Iranian government agencies, the Shia clergy in Iran, and the Shia Pakistani, predate the 1979 revolution and were never severed.

In the article, Abbas mentions radical-Sunni harassment of the Shia in Parachinar as the main driver behind his political awakening. As the political protests in Syria degenerated into sectarian strife targeting Shia shrines in Damascus, Abbas saw Syria as an “apocalyptic battle ground” for which he felt ready. He claims to have reached out to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and obtained a verbal “positive response” to participate in the war in Syria, after which he began to recruit Shia Pakistanis. This recruitment effort, he says, coincidentally happened when the UAE expelled “12,000 Shia,” some of whom moved to Iran and some of whom were Pakistani.

According to Abbas, the IRGC only enrolled 50 Shia Pakistani nationals in its military training program. One of those, also interviewed by Panjereh, who was later promoted to officer and goes by the nom de guerre Karbala, seems to have been among those expelled from the UAE late in 2014 or early 2015. Karbala says he is a native of Parachinar, the capital of the Kurram Agency and the largest city in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Karbala says he became politically active because of the Shia-Sunni tensions in Pakistan. When the Zeinabiyoun Brigade was established in Mashhad in 2015, Razavi Khorasan province, Karbala rushed to Iran to join the militia.

Apart from volunteers from Pakistan, and Shia Pakistanis expelled from UAE, there are also some Shia Pakistani theological students from the Jameat al-Mostafa University in Qom who volunteered for the war in Syria.

This author’s survey of funeral services held in Iran for Shia Pakistani nationals killed in combat in Iraq and Syria generally corroborates the information provided in Panjereh.

The Zeinabiyoun Brigade has suffered a total 140 combat fatalities, per publicly accessible documents, though the actual number is likely slightly higher. The first three Zeinabiyoun fighters were killed in combat in Iraq in June and November 2014, the remainder (137) were killed in Syria. This indicates that the IRGC initially incorporated the Pakistanis into Iraqi militias before shifting tactics and deploying them to Syria. Interestingly, there is no sign of Iran using Afghani militants in Iraq.

The relatively low number of Zeinabiyoun combat fatalities in Syria is also an indicator of the relatively small size of the militia in comparison with other Shia militias, including the Iraqis, the latter for which there is no reliable statistical information. (Figure 1)

Image
Figure 1: Shia combat fatalities in Syria and nationality January 1, 2012 – April 25, 2017

The first Shia Pakistanis killed in combat in Syria lost their lives in November 2014, which corroborates Karbala’s account of the approximate time of establishment of the Zeinabiyoun. The presence of at least four theological students among the combat fatalities supports claims of Jameat al-Mostafa students and graduates participating in combat.

In one respect however, there is a mismatch between claims of the Zeinabiyoun commanders and the data: While the Zeinabiyoun commanders insist their brigade operates independently, the fatalities of the militia follow the same pattern as IRGC losses in Syria. This indicates they operate alongside with and most likely under IRGC command. (Figure 2)

Image
Figure 2: Shia combat fatalities in Syria by nationality and month of death January 1, 2012 – April 25, 2017

Iran walks a fine line when organizing this militia. While Tehran tries hard to improve relations with its nuclear armed eastern neighbor, the IRGC leadership is clearly tempted to recruit Shia Pakistanis fleeing religious intolerance in their home country. These fighters are highly motivated, volunteering for a war in which they, at least theoretically, have the chance of getting even with opponents whom they consider their ‘tormentors’—the mainly-Sunni opposition to the Assad regime and its international backers.

Additionally, the IRGC’s mobilization, training, and deployment of the Shia Pakistanis may not provide an effective deterrence against Pakistan, but it might warn Islamabad to not provide logistical support and safe haven for Sunni Iranian radicals who operate in the Iran-Pakistan border areas. At this point, the IRGC’s effort however, is too limited to make a meaningful impact on Islamabad, but it signals that Iran could scale up if it felt threatened by Pakistan.

Liwa Zainebiyoun
The Followers of Zainab Brigade (لواء زينبیون‬, Liwa Zainebiyoun or Liwa Zainabiyoon) is a pro-government brigade fighting in Syria composed of Shia Pakistanis.[8][9] It draws recruits from Shia Pakistanis living in Iran, Shia Hazara living in Pakistan,[9] and native Shia of Parachinar and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.[1] It was formed and trained by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and operates under their command.[9] Initially tasked with defending the Sayyidah Zaynab Mosque,[10][11] it has since entered frontlines across Syria.[1] Its dead are buried primarily in Iran.[9][11]
Once in a while you hear of sporadic Paki media reports of MQM (Shia) recruits from Karachi who go illegally via land to Iran and then onwards to Syria to fight against ISIS !

Since late April 2018 there has been no news of Ex COAS Raheel Sharif and current Head Of So-Called Muslim NATO ( An Alliance of Sunni Arab countries against Shia Muslim Countries) Rumour had it that Raheel was offered the posting because of his well known Anti Shia bent of mind . He was last seen, dancing a Bollywood number ,garbed in shalwar - kameez, at a farm house near La-Whore . Celebrating with gusto the wedding of his son to a local industrialist. Then he had to dash back to Ryadh to take care of worsening war situation in Yemen, the Shia rebels giving a hard time to the Sunnis . And later on the so-called rumours of a coup in the Saudi capital , the much touted "reform" of Saudi society . ( on which strangely there are no daily updates !) Now his sponsor and employer MBS has disappeared from the face of the earth, so to say.! Some rumours have it that MBS is seriously injured in an attempted coup against his father ( King Salman) while Iranian media is spreading the news that he is dead ! Nothing confirmed yet ! Wonder, if Raheel met the same fate. Protecting his employer but went down with him as well. Even Paki press is strangely silent on this mystery

I know Obama is a TSP pasnad India TSP equal equal policy wonk, but if true, never knew his love of TSP was so extensive that he gave TSPA/ISI a clean chit on 26/11.

According To This Report, Imran Is Still In Thrall With The Peerni ! She Appears To Be Calling The Political Shots For The PTI Party Behind The Scenes !

‘Spiritual leader’ behind PTI’s U-turn on Nasir Khosa’s candidacy, claims PPP leader
Pakistan People’s Party Leader Faisal Mir has made the rather startling claim that ‘spiritual’ forces were behind the PTI’s supposed about-turn on its support for former bureaucrat Nasir Khan Khosa as Punjab’s interim Chief Minister.
Speaking on a private TV show, Faisal Mir claimed that several PPP leaders had defected to the PTI over the past few years, “these people have been affiliated with the PPP for the past twenty years,” Mir revealed.
He then said that one of these individuals had informed Mir that the Party had together decided upon Khosa’s candidacy, and the party had even held consultations with Khosa himself.“The party had thorough consultations and even discussed the position with Khosa,” Mir claimed. “The PTI knew Khosa was the candidate who suited them the most.”
The PPP leader then claimed that his source in the PTI informed him that despite everything being finalised, the PTI’s ‘spiritual’ leader–referring to Imran Khan’s wife–realised at the last minute that Khosa’s selection was not a good omen for the party.“The spiritual leader used Imran Khan and Nasir Khosa’s date of births and the fact that Imran’s name ends with ‘N’, while Nasir Khosa’s starts with ‘N’ to deduce that this arrangement would not suit the party,” the PPP leader claimed in the startling revelation.
So, the Peerni used her UnIslamic witchcraft ( combination of numerology, astrology, gup-shup gossip etc ) to warn "her husband" of the imminent danger of the candidate ( Nisar Khosa) and Oxford "educated" Imran fell for the ruse and reversed his position on the candidate . Says much about his decision making skills. No wonder, the Paki fauj is seriously looking at Shahbaaz Sharif as an alternative to Imran Khan
Mir also claimed that he verified this claim from a few other PPP members who had defected to the PTI, all of whom said that this was indeed the case.
There is always the possibility that this is FAKE NEWS planted by the PPP to tarnish Imran's "good name"
The PPP leader also added that this last minute spiritual intervention had forced several PTI leaders on the defensive, who were now having to defend the PTI’s change in policy.
PTI , as many have come to know, is a one -man show . Totally micro-managed by the Kaptaan  .
Nasir Khosa, who is a former bureaucrat and who previously served as the chief secretary in both Balochistan and Punjab, meanwhile, chose not to take the caretaker position on Thursday.Sources claimed that Khosa had not been consulted prior to being nominated, and thus chose to recuse himself from the position.
B.S ! There are probably some skeletons in his closet that he is afraid will come out . Otherwise, which Paki politico would refuse such a one time golden opportunity to "mint money"

According To "Global Times" Which Is One Of The Official Chinese Newspaper, Gwadar Is Going To Serve As A ReSupply Base For Chinese Peace Keeping Convoys

China’s blue helmets help maintain peace
China has 2,507 peacekeepers on active duty, says PLA Daily
China's decades-long, steadfast commitment to UN Peacekeeping fully displays its status as a leader in maintaining world peace without favor or bias and no hidden agenda, said Chinese observers on Tuesday, which marked the 70th anniversary of UN Peacekeeping missions."Under the mandate of the UN, China has been deploying its blue berets to the most turbulent spots around the world, shouldering an increasing share of the UN Peacekeeping budget, which shows it is fulfilling its responsibility as a world power," Song Zhongping, a military expert and TV commentator, told the Global Times on Tuesday.
Chinese experts predict that the country's peacekeeping role will grow and will expand its overseas supply facilities at key ports around the globe.
China joined UN Peacekeeping operations in 1990, and Chinese troops have been deployed 24 times, involving more than 37,000 personnel. Thirteen Chinese peacekeepers sacrificed their lives during those missions, China's People's Liberation Army Daily (PLA) website 81.cn reported on Tuesday.
China's contribution to the UN Peacekeeping missions is not without detractors, who have impugned China's motives.
Li Daguang, a professor at the National Defense University of the People's Liberation Army, called such reports "groundless slander."
China's first foreign support base in Djibouti serves to enhance China's capability in escorting, peace-keeping and humanitarian aid missions in Africa and West Asia, said Song. The area is among the most turbulent and is home to the world's most vulnerable people who need protecting, he noted.
Establishing foreign bases should not be seen as a military expansion, as they are designed to support China's UN Peacekeeping missions, Song said. In addition to its Djibouti base, China will continue to set up peacekeeping support bases along key mission routes, said Li. The Gwadar port of Pakistan will serve as a resupply base for China's peacekeeping convoys, Li told the Global Times on Tuesday.

Is the Paki Govt aware of this disclosure and had earlier agreed to this and is one of the many "secret clauses" that the Paki National Assembly Members are not aware off , when they "rubber stamped" the CPEC ( Colonizing Pakistan To Enrich China !) agreement

J&K: Security forces on high alert after reports of 'large scale infiltration'

SRINAGAR: Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir have been put on a high alert following reports of large scale infiltration of terrorists in the Valley from across the Line of Control, officials said here today.

There are reports of infiltration of over 20 terrorists into Kashmir from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) recently, the officials said.

They said most of the militants are believed to be affiliated to Jaish-e-Mohammad outfit headed by Maulana Masood Azhar.

The security grid is apprehending a spike in terrorist attacks in the state, particularly in the Valley, the officials said.

The security forces have been asked to remain on a high alert and maintain vigil around sensitive security installations across the state, they said.

The officials said it is rare for such a large number of terrorists to infiltrate in one go and indicated the desperation of their handlers across the LoC to keep the Kashmir pot boiling.

Pakistan, India should resolve Kashmir conflict through dialogue: Chinese spokesperson
BEIJING: China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying on Thursday called for Pakistan and India to resolve conflict through dialogue after both sides agreed to abide by the 2003 ceasefire agreement on May 29.
Not sure if the Chinis are playing a "double game" with Pakiland . Doing a deal with India behind Pakistan's back
“We appreciate the positive actions taken by India and Pakistan. We hope that the two sides will continue to properly resolve relevant differences through dialogue and consultation and uphold regional peace and stability,” she said. The comments from Beijing comes in the wake of India and Pakistan agreeing to safeguard peace along the Line of Control (LoC) and Working Boundary.
Not sure if the Pakis are "alarmed " and /or "disappointed" by this "lukewarm" response from their "tallel than mountain fliend"

Khawaja Asif Back Into The Game :D

SC allows disqualified Khawaja Asif to contest elections; nullifies IHC verdict

ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Friday accepted an appeal filed by former foreign minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif against his lifetime disqualification under Article 62 of the Constitution.A three-member bench, headed by Justice Umar Atta Bandial and comprising Justices Faisal Arab and Sajjad Ali Shah, heard the appeal against the verdict of the Islamabad High Court in Asif’s assets case. The apex court, declaring the lifetime disqualification null and void, allowed the former minister to take part in the general elections, set to be held on July 25. Justice Bandiyal read the short verdict, adding that the detailed verdict will be issued later.
The court has reserved the verdict earlier today after hearing the arguments of Asif’s counsel and lawyer of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Usman Dar.Dar talking to media outside the court said that they will decide about the future course of action after reviewing the detailed verdict. The former foreign minister thanked judiciary over the verdict in a tweet following the disqualification.
On April 26, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) dealt another blow to the ruling Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz after it disqualified the country’s Foreign Minister for life in the disqualification case.
It is hard to believe that the Paki Supreme Court would have overturned the earlier decision of the Isloo High Court without the say-so of the Deep State . IMO, there is some sort of a rehabilitation process under way to make the Nawaz Party "relevant" in the coming election sans Ganja Sharif !

Will "Mosque Reform" Work This Time

New security policy focusing on mosque reforms to be launched
ISLAMABAD: The National Internal Security Policy (NISP) released on Thursday for the first time focuses on ‘mosque reforms’ which will be initiated from Islamabad. The reform programme includes an audit of all funds raised for setting up, maintenance or expansion of mosques by the government to ensure transparency.
Besides, the recently established Cyber Patrolling Unit of the FIA will be resourced and empowered to monitor the social media, including Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter to curb their misuse for unlawful activities. The policy also suggests steps pertaining to hate speech, fake news, racial prejudice and glorification of terrorism and terrorist organisations. FATF danda
Deputy Commissioner Islamabad retired Capt Mushtaq Ahmed ( faujis - active or retired are "everywhere" in Isloo - not sure if this is an appointed or elected position !) have got their fingerexpressed the confidence that the policy would be successfully implemented.
“There cannot be any abrupt change in society but there will be gradual transformation, and many clerics are coming up to cooperate with the authorities.”He called upon the citizens to lodge complaints at the DC office if there is any illegal construction or establishment of mosques.
When it comes to the Mullahs, even the faujis have to walk on egg shells. Lest they face a "Khomeni like revolt" in the future
The policy says religion-based killings were the key source of terrorism in the country. Many terrorist groups remain active in the country with the stated aim of imposing their own interpretation of religion and establishing a global caliphate while discrediting democratically elected governments, civil and military institutions.
Once the genie of Islam was let out of the bottle by Zia, with the help of Saudia and CIA - for political purposes- they are now finding it hard to put it back into the bottle again
“Most of these terrorist outfits stand either proscribed or eliminated already by Pakistan but comprehensive action is required to remove their traces entirely and choke any financing that they may draw from the country.”
TTP is still operating out of Afghanistan, if Paki reports are to be believed !
The second most serious form of terrorism in the country, it states, was ‘sectarian terrorism’ as several sectarian outfits originated in Pakistan and continued to have a presence and often used violent means to target prominent personalities, festivals and places of worship belonging to other sects. The other two are ‘ethno-political terrorism’ and ‘sub-national terrorism’.
If Paki press reports are to be believed , sectarian outfits are "encouraged" by the Deep State !
The policy focuses heavily on mosque reforms claiming that the federal government would work with provinces and religious leaders to initiate wide ranging reforms to make the mosques centres of learning and religious guidance for the citizens. :((
The interior ministry has acknowledged that despite success in curbing terrorism, little has been done to eradicate extremism. The diffusion of violent ideologies in a cross-section of society has given rise to intolerance and extremism that provides a breeding ground for a new generation of terrorists. :((
Besides, the recently established Cyber Patrolling Unit of the FIA will be resourced and empowered to monitor the social media, including Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter to curb their misuse for unlawful activities. The policy also suggests steps pertaining to hate speech, fake news, racial prejudice and glorification of terrorism and terrorist organisations.
Another example of "when action is lacking, buzz words ( FIA will be resourced blah, blah, blah) will make up the slack

CROSS POSTED FROM MILITARY THREAD !

From a Paki Sarkari Paper !

Russia may sell S 400 Missile Defence System to Pakistan despite Indian objection: Report
NEW DELHI - The Indian defence ministry’s view is that Russia , which has already sold the S - 400 Missile Defence system to China, could also sell it to Pakistan, if India reneges on the deal at this stage. In the past decade, Russian RD-93 engines were supplied to Pakistan through the China route for JF-17 fighters despite objections in writing from India .
India will push ahead with its deal to buy the S-400 air defence systems from Russia despite opposition from the US, defence ministry officials said on condition of anonymity.
According to them, the defence ministry will approach the apex Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) for approval to purchase five units of Russian S-400 air defence systems.
They added that the ministry has received no instructions as of now to stall the contract in the wake of the US red-flagging the $5.5 billion deal.
The Trump administration has warned India of the consequences of this purchase from Russia and said it could curtail military cooperation with the United States.
The officials said the CCS headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take the final decision now that both the countries have completed negotiations to close the deal.
The officials said that New Delhi has already used back channels to explain India’s concerns and the need for a strong air defence system given the neighbourhood. The Indian Air Force (IAF), given the advance aerial capabilities of China and Pakistan, needs the S-400 to protect its air bases.
Prime Minister Modi’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval ia believed to have made made quiet calls to both the White House and the Kremlin to convince both the countries that India is too big a nation to belong to any camp and that it takes all decisions in its own national interest. :D

Cannot Bear The Ramzan Heat In The" Holy" Month? No Problem ! Take Shelter In The Air- Conditioned ATM Shed

As the Country Sizzles, People Take Refuge Inside ATMs
They do say that where there is a will, there is a way. And that desperate times call for desperate measures. No kidding !
As many cities in Pakistan continue to sizzle under the full glare of the summer heat, ordinary people are being literally left out to dry. The politicians want us to know that all is well, but the reality is something else altogether.Nothing drives this point home than a few pictures that are being widely circulated over social media and Whatsapp. Let’s take a look at them first:Us Pakistanis like to pride ourselves on our ‘jugaars’ (shortcuts) and that also seems to be the case when it comes to creative ways of beating the heat.
ATMs are for more than just withdrawing whatever little money our bank accounts hold. But did you know they also happen to have fully functional air-conditioners? It was only a matter of time before some enterprising souls put two and two together, and decided to camp in one.Call it genius or something that was right under our very noses, but some students decided to make the most of the situation and beat the heat (literally).
And as it is with most folks with these days, if there ain’t a selfie to mark the occasion, it probably didn’t happen in the first place. Some citizens from Karachi decided to do away with the pretense and flaunt their newfound ‘azadi’ inside an ATM machine.

Of course and that will enhance their prestige, they hope. They want to arrange talks between NoKo-SoKo/US, want to arrange talks bet Taliban & Afghan Gov & Pakistan (sidelining US) etc. . . Want to up their profile.

Also, the Chinese have other necessities. As I wrote elsewhere, commenting on an article, the following could be also true:
Chinese diplomacy always works for multiple long-term gains and a India-Pak rapprochement is seen by China essential for itself at this juncture. Xi Jinping has stoked a 'Chinese Dream' and has given definite timelines for achieving the twin objectives of a prosperous economy and world dominance displacing the existing world order. While BRI is the building block for boosting China's sagging economy, the 'world dominance' cannot be achieved without establishing Chinese hegemony apart from, of course, military modernization. While military modernization is internal, the success of both BRI and projection of hegemony need Indian involvement. BRI lacks teeth without India being part of it and pro-active Indian efforts to thwart Chinese hegemony stand in its way. Hence these Chinese Chequers.

They will soon insert themselves as the third party in the India pak dispute. They have their own CPEC interests to protect and the pakis are incapable of doing it for them.

With their UNSC veto status as well as being landlords in cashmere, they are extremely well placed to poke their nose, at will, into India's affairs.

Uber RAPE Jehangir Qazi on how the existing Status Quo in Indo Pak relations is screwing Pakhanistan: Haraam Link.

India-Pakistan relations comprise seven decades of mutual hostility, conflict and fleeting possibilities for improved ties. The conventional wisdom is that a ‘no war, no peace’ stalemate stabilised through mutual nuclear deterrence is the best available prospect.

Actually, this is not a stable prospect. It involves ongoing costs, including foregone opportunities that weigh more on the smaller country, Pakistan :D . India can more easily absorb these costs although they may slow down its economic transformation and hamper or even thwart its Great Power aspirations.

For Pakistan, semi-permanent confrontation with India renders the necessary transition from a security state to a development state very difficult. This limits prioritised allocation of resources for human resource development and capacity-building of essential civil and political institutions. As a result, the quality of governance, delivery of socioeconomic justice and political stability are degraded. Pakistan loses and a hostile India gains. Our history confirms this.

To deal with a host of domestic and external challenges converging upon Pakistan, radical and rapid progress on a broad front of issues will be essential. This includes reducing the Indian threat through principled and sensible policies that do not involve sell-outs on any issue. Difficult but possible. India and Pakistan are neighbouring nuclear powers with no room to rectify miscalculations in a crisis. Unfortunately, the constant tension increases the risk of unintended utter disaster.

At present, India and Pakistan are not engaging with each other except for contacts between their national security advisers. Pakistan is prepared for dialogue but India is playing hardball. The fact is that even if structured and comprehensive bilateral dialogue is resumed, progress on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir will be extremely difficult to achieve.

India is the bigger party that is unwilling to alter the territorial status quo in a way that could provide a basis for an eventual settlement acceptable to the Kashmiri people. Nevertheless, even without territorial change, significant progress towards an interim arrangement was made in 2005-2006 through backchannel talks. However, because of domestic developments in both countries and particularly since the Mumbai attacks of 2008, India has become more obdurate than ever.(Yes Mumbai attack in 2008 just happened, It was people from outer space who did it)

Meanwhile, Pakistan has allowed itself to be internationally isolated over Afghanistan, terrorism and extremism, as well as concerns over the alleged possibility of unauthorised access to its strategic assets/materials. This has narrowed its diplomatic options and placed it at an even greater disadvantage vis-à-vis India.

How do we move forward? Confrontation and zero-sum games with India do not help. They only play to India’s strengths and exacerbate Pakistan’s vulnerabilities. Instead, a longer-term strategy for détente with India without compromising on the political and human rights of the Kashmiris needs to be thought through in concrete detail (Yeah fat chance of that happening). India’s current hostility and obduracy are a given for the time being. Within such parameters a dialogue process sustained by a whole range of new and old confidence-building measures needs to be developed in order to shift the process towards Pakistan’s strengths. (Pakis hoping for malsi pasand and national interest compromising parties - congress and other opposition will come to power in 2019)

For this to happen, a leadership of vision, integrity and tenacity will be required to educate and inform the public about prevailing realities, and to face opposition and accusations, especially in the likely event of an initial lack of Indian reciprocity. Ultimately, international support for a principled settlement acceptable to Kashmiris, Pakistanis and Indians will require India to respond more positively. It still may not. But if India is denied the excuse of Pakistani provocation, the pressure of international opinion would build on it rather than on Pakistan (Thank God that is never going to happen due to tactically brilliant and down-hill sking generals in Pakistan). This could eventually impact India’s domestic opinion. There is, moreover, no feasible or honest alternative to such a strategy, and the traumatised Kashmiris know it.

Proud Of The Boys  ( ps. See below !)

Proud of our boys
When the British Prime Minister came to watch the Pakistan vs England Test Match at Lords Cricket Ground, she was struck by the performance of our team, and deeply impressed by the young men who went on to win the Test. She is said to have remarked that the British spend millions on their team’s education, physical training, world-class coaching and even their mental health in order to make them fit for the nerve-rackingly competitive game. She then remarked in awestruck tones that she wondered at the Pakistani team and where they get their inspiring talent from. She was told that the team is assembled from young men across Pakistan who are from amongst the people, who grow up playing in the most adverse circumstances but stay the course because they are fired by their passion for the game. And then the Pakistan Super League came as a godsend for the most talented amongst them, burnishing their talent and grooming them for victory in the field. :((

PS: Pakis showing their Pakistaniyat on foreign soil

Pakistan fined for slow over-rate in first Test vs England
The fine was imposed after Sarfraz Ahmed’s Pakistan cricket team were ruled to be three overs short of their target when time allowances were taken into consideration in the first Test vs the England cricket team at Lords.

CROSS POSTED FROM "WEST ASIA" BECAUSE OF PAKI CONNECTION !

Rumours Of MBS Death Are Not Unfounded

Has Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman actually been assassinated? Viral photo sparks suspicions
RIYADH – The rumoured assassination of Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman had set the tongues wagging a few days ago after Russian and Iranian media speculated about the possible death of 32-year-old during a coup attempt.
The rumours were sparked once again after a chilling photo stumped the internet allegedly showing MBS (Mohammed bin Salman) being taken for performing his last rituals. The picture shows Saudi bigwigs including Saudi King Salman ‘carrying’ his son.
Image
Where is his "Chief Paki Bodyguard" General Raheel Sharif . Has he "gone" too
Another photo was uploaded on the social media showing a ‘dead’ Saudi royal, stirring concerns that the state’s number two might actually have been killed during the rumoured coup attempt, termed drone scare by the Saudi media in April.
Image
However, to quash the rumours, the royal family of Saudi Arabia has released an official video on Wednesday which shows Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman attending a summit. The video apparently shows Salman greeting Yemeni President Abdrabbo Mansour Hadi in Jeddah to discuss the ongoing Yemen crisis as reported earlier on Al-Arabiya.
Besides the video, another picture has also been provided to the media showing the aspiring Saudi King chairing a meeting of officials.
With the surfacing of the official video, it stands clear that the photos showing a ‘dead’ MBS were doctored.
Someone will blow the lid sooner or later from the secretive "hermit " kingdom ! With MBS "gone" so are his grandiose plans to modernize Saudia and Mali

PS: With "all" this going on in Saudia, (where a large contingent of Paki fauj is present to protect the Royals ), wonder why is the Paki Press strangely silent on the fate of Raheel Sharif , which to put it very frankly, is/was the "Chief Bodyguard" Of Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Sultan and had one time also shown in a photu with POTUS Son-In-Law in Saudia last year !!!

Non-bailable arrest warrants issued for TV anchor Shahid Masood
A court on Friday issued non-bailable arrest warrants for TV anchor Shahid Masood in a case related to corruption in state-run Pakistan Television
(PTV).A Senior Civil Judge issued the warrants on the request of Kashif Riaz Awan, an investigation officer of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
The investigation officer stated that the accused deliberately avoided to join the investigation.
One more Paki Establishment figure suspected of "drinking at the public trough"
Image
He said since sufficient incriminating evidence have come on record, non-bailable arrest warrants should be issued for the accused.
PS: There is a silver lining though ! If he can bring sufficient "high sifarish" or doing some sort of a blackmail -( like the policeman Rao Anwar suspected of encounter killing of Pashtoon Naqibullah in Karachi ) - he may yet escape the Paki gallows

Paki Faujis Set To Close Karachi's Iconic "Do- Darya Restaurant"

FOOTPRINTS: LEFTOVERS AT DO DARYA
THERE was a time not so long ago when people had to wait for hours for a table at a Do Darya restaurant. Where once they used to call in earlier to make reservations, now they call in advance to check if their favourite eatery is still standing.
Today, the Do Darya restaurant strip in the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) Phase VIII wears a deserted look, even though a few restaurants yet remain. The ruins of demolished establishments speak of a ghost town. Some of the skeletons have been covered with tent sheets, or kanatein, but the sea wind has them flapping away and the nakedness is plain to see. Amongst the heaps of rubble, broken glass, wooden pillars, tables, chairs, pots, pans and dishes, and a forlorn a line of rusting gas cylinders, lie memories of elegant family get-togethers. Where once parking valets would come running up to help park your car at the crowded seaside food street, today there is space everywhere.
In the name of Defence Housing Authority , the Paki Faujis want to "grab" everything from whatever little the Aam Abduls get as "entertainment and relaxation" at a favourite spot !
Do Darya was different from other eateries in that it overlooked the flowing waters. There was the ocean on either side of Bundal Island, which gave the place its name — Do Darya, or the place where two rivers meet. From the deck and balconies of the restaurants one could see boats from the nearby Marina Club and fishing boats pass silently by. This place used to be a must-visit for tourists.
“DHA did this to our Itwaar Bazaar too,” says a resident of the area who preferred the Sunday Bazaar to the malls for groceries. “It was there one Sunday and there was nothing there the next.”
The faujis are muscling into every civilian venture in every Paki city . One of these days, some sort of a blowback is inevitable !!!
The shore is one of the best places from which to watch the sunrise and sunset. It is not uncommon to find people at the beach saying their Maghrib prayers without even needing to listen to the call for prayer. As such, what is left of Do Darya’s eateries are currently favoured for iftaar meals — the guests are there to enjoy what they can, while they can.
When contacted, DHA authorities were not available for comment. “In their effort to play down the matter, earlier this month the DHA didn’t even allow media coverage of a golf tournament at the DHA Golf Club, because it happens to be very near Do Darya,” comments a sports journalist. “They must have been worried that the media would pass through the area and see what’s happening there. So they sent out WhatsApp messages to us saying that the closing ceremony of the event would be a low-key affair without media coverage.”
The eventual fate of Do Darya remains to be seen. Since the restaurants that remain are in litigation, they don’t want to talk, and the DHA doesn’t entertain questioning anyway. We’ll just have to wait and see.
It was in DHA area , that last year the Chini "Manager" was point blank shot dead by his Paki Partner when the Chinese Man threatened to expose him because of his corruption !!!

Gang rape charges: Case registered against Ayaz Amir
The Express Tribune
ISLAMABAD: PML-N lawmaker and columnist from Chakwal, Ayaz Amir and six others were booked on Friday on the orders of a sessions court for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl.
However, police were asked to thoroughly investigate the allegations before taking any action. In her application, Tabassum Farooq, a resident of Langah village, alleged that she was taken to the residence of Ayaz Amir on May 22 by her sister-in-law where an intoxicated Amir forcibly raped her.
Ayaz Amir denied that he had met the girl. “I was in Lahore on May 22. My phone record, my stay at Avari hotel in Lahore and my meeting with the Punjab chief minister on May 21 prove my innocence,” said Amir.
Shocking ! Even if it is not true ! This "guy" is a former MNA ! A former Captain in the Paki Fauj ! A well known columnist and an intellectual ! No wonder that Ganja's Party refused him a nomination ! Now, in the tradition of all Paki politicos, he has jumped ship to Immy 's PTI Party !!

Head Of Pakistani Drug Trafficking Network Pleads Guilty In Manhattan Federal Court To Conspiring To Import Heroin Into The United States

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Thursday, May 31, 2018
Shahbaz Khan Conspired to Send Tens of Thousands of Kilograms of Heroin to the United States for Distribution in New York City
Geoffrey S. Berman, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and Raymond P. Donovan, Special Agent in Charge of the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (“DEA”) Special Operations Division, announced today that SHAHBAZ KHAN pled guilty to conspiring to import heroin into the United States, and to attempting to import heroin into the United States. KHAN was taken into custody by Liberian authorities on December 1, 2016, and expelled to the United States later that same day based on a pending Complaint in this District. He pled guilty today to a Superseding Indictment in Manhattan federal court before U.S. District Judge Lorna G. Schofield. U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman stated: “Shahbaz Khan boasted to an undercover officer about his ability to smuggle drugs anywhere in the world without detection. The DEA put the lie to that boast. Khan has now admitted to conspiring and attempting to import massive quantities of heroin into the United States, and this international narcotics kingpin is now a convicted felon awaiting what could be a substantial sentence.”
Usual Paki boast now put to rest !
KHAN, a Pakistani national, was the leader of a drug trafficking organization (the “DTO”) based in Afghanistan and Pakistan that produced and distributed massive quantities of heroin around the world. In 2007, KHAN was designated a Narcotics Kingpin under the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act by then-president George W. Bush. Between approximately August 2016 and October 2016, KHAN conspired to send tens of thousands of kilograms of heroin hidden in maritime shipping containers and air cargo shipments to New York City.
Mr. Berman praised the outstanding investigative efforts of the DEA’s Special Operations Division’s Bilateral Investigations Unit; the DEA Accra, Canberra, Sydney, Dubai, Islamabad, Kabul, Nairobi, and New Delhi Country Offices; the DEA New York Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force Financial Investigative Team; the Government of Liberia; the Liberian Drug Enforcement Agency; the DEA Nairobi Country Office Kenyan Police Vetted Unit; the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission; and the Maldives Police Service. The defendant’s arrest and subsequent expulsion are also the result of the close cooperative efforts of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York and the Department of Justice’s Office of International Affairs.

This confirms Balochistan is an occupied colony of Pakistani Punjabis. A school in Gwadur on the Makran coast is being built by Pakistan’s Govt of Punjab and Pakistan Navy with the contract signed in Lahore. No Baloch official present, not even the puppets . Chinis not present ? Mandarin not to be taught in these "schools" ( aka madarassahs!)

Another sign of Chinification , IMO. Meanwhile Gwadar is going to become a Chinese Resupply Base , according to Chinese Media !!!

Pakistan Navy to acquire two modern warships from China
RAWALPINDI – Contract for the acquisition of two warships for Pakistan Navy was signed with M/s China Shipbuilding Trading Company Ltd (CSTC), at Ministry of Defence Production, Rawalpindi.Deputy Chief of Naval Staff (Operations), Rear Admiral Faisal Rasul Lodhi was also present on the occasion.
With the conclusion of this contract, Pakistan Navy will now have a total of four Type-054 A ships in its Fleet by 2021. The induction of these Ships will substantially enhance Pakistan Navy’s war-fighting capabilities while effectively contributing towards Maritime Security Operations in the region.
Nothing in the rest of the report mentions how much it is going to cost and how are they going to pay for it . Maybe, it is the same kind of deal as that satellite deal - gifted to Pakiland, but used by the Chinese for monitoring Pakistan from "space"

Who’s in the dock?

Lt General (retd) Asad Durrani, ex-DG ISI, has run afoul of his Alma Mater. His alleged crime: jointly authoring a book with AS Dulat, ex RAW chief of India. GHQ has formed a “court of inquiry” to determine whether he violated any army rules in venturing into this project or revealed “state secrets” detrimental to the cause of national security. It has also ordered that his name be placed on the Exit Control List pending the case.

Gen Durrani describes himself as a “normal line officer” until he became “an accidental spymaster” in a stopgap appointment by a caretaker government for 18 months in 1990-91. During this time, he worked closely with COAS General Mirza Aslam Beg to bribe politicians and facilitate the election of Nawaz Sharif as prime minister. But he fell out with PM Sharif when he refused to spy on COAS General Asif Nawaz Janjua who, in Nawaz’s view, was conspiring with Benazir Bhutto to get rid of him. So, upon the urging of Nawaz Sharif who wanted his “own man” Gen Javed Nasir as DG ISI, Gen Janjua transferred Gen Durrani to GHQ after promoting him to Lt Gen. Shortly after Gen Janjua’s sudden death in 1993, the new COAS Gen Abdul Waheed Kakar sacked Gen Durrani from the army for indulging in unauthorized political activity by becoming a go-between Benazir Bhutto and General Janjua. But after coming to power, Ms Bhutto rewarded him by posting him as Ambassador to Germany. In due course, Gen Durrani became a columnist and was actively wooed as a think-tanker and Track-2 diplomat with an insider’s take on critical Indo-Pak and US-Pak matters. He now honed his persona to go with his new job: part blunt, part enigmatic, depending on the issue and forum.

GHQ has always looked upon Gen Durrani as a maverick who can be trusted to defend the institution when push comes to shove but with some views subtly contrary to the prevailing national security wisdom in his Alma Mater establishment. So why has GHQ suddenly jumped the gun and hauled him up?

Gen Durrani isn’t the first army officer to have empowered his elbow. At least a dozen Generals and a score of other army officers have, before him, spilled the beans in dribs and drabs, whether in the form of articles, books or TV interviews, at home and abroad. None of them had their books vetted by GHQ and none obtained a formal NOC before doing so. If Air Marshals Nur Khan and Asghar Khan were surprisingly candid about all the wars fought against India, General Pervez Musharraf is the biggest loud mouth of recent times and can safely be classified as a national security risk in comparison with the soft-spoken Gen Durrani. Moreover, at least a couple of dozen books detailing the shenanigans of the Miltablishment, including three full length critical biographies of the ISI by foreign scholars, are freely available at bookshops across the country. Indeed, this practice of writing memoirs or policy critiques is widely prevalent in the West where every second US National Security Advisor and CIA Chief has freely commented on his time in office and often revealed startling facts. So what’s the beef with Gen Durrani?

Regardless of what’s in the book – and there isn’t anything terribly significant that is unknown to Pakistan watchers – GHQ is unsettled by its timing. Only recently it has extracted a heavy price from Nawaz Sharif for Dawnleaks in which a well-known fact – that the Miltablishment’s policy of propping up militant non-state actors has become a millstone around the elected government’s neck – was made public. Nawaz Sharif’s subsequent comments of Miltablishment meddling in politics have attracted charges of “treason” and “Indian agent”. Now General Durrani comes along and calmly goes a couple of steps further than Nawaz Sharif, prompting the latter to quickly demand a sitting of the National Security Council to ascertain the veracity of admissions in the book and compare these with the insignificant utterances that cost him his job as prime minister. Under the circumstances, GHQ had no option but to quell the demand by pulling the “errant” General under its wing and silencing its rising critics. Should GHQ now demand a ban on the book that is published in India, it would look sillier still because it is now freely available on the web.

The double standards of the Miltablishment are now evident all round. General Musharraf is kosher but Gen Durrani is not. Nawaz Sharif is guilty of Iqama but Imran has not misdeclared. And so on, ad nauseam. No wonder, then, that a recent PILDAT survey shows that the credibility of military leaders in the popular imagination has fallen to the lowest among eleven institutional categories. This has raised serious question marks about its strategy to oust Nawaz Sharif and install another kangaroo government in Islamabad by pre-rigging the next elections. It has also put the spotlight on who is really in a bind and in the dock.
