Imported South African giraffe passes away in Lahore Zoo, when will the management be answerable?
The four-year-old cheetah had been imported as a pair from South Africa in 2017 but the female had survived lesser than the male and her succumbed to her fate earlier.

“We have sent samples to the university and the complete report would be available on Monday,” Deputy Director Lahore Zoo Tanvir Ahmed had told Daily Pakistan at the time. “It is possible the leopard was unable to adjust here and expired,” he had added.
The female leopard died because of sharia law.

When she saw the male leopard being circumcised, she was shocked beyond belief and subsequently expired without recovering from the shock.

deputy director lahore zoo tanvir ahmed's explanation that one of the leopards was unable to adjust here and expired but the other survived under the same conditions simply does not wash.

The jobless paki CJI should intervene immediately to give justice to the surviving leopard.

USA, as a matter of course, routinely denies visas to Iranis, NOKOs scholars etc etc . So, what is the problem here ! Visa is NOT a right, but a privilege ! The "80 scholars" are lucky that were able to do their "protest". If the tables were reversed, they would have been allowed to do such a thing in "democratic" Pakistan !
What is getting their goat is that Indian govt is denying visas to ex-Pakis, lumping them in the same bucket as Pakis. US would never do such a thing with ex-Iranians, since an Iranian holding an EU or Canadian passport (just to give an example) would be treated as a European or Canadian.

Personally I have no problem with GoI treating ex-Pakis like that since once a Paki always a Paki, but for the sake of appearances, GoI should maybe give visas to about 10% of these folks so they can't say there is a regime of denial etc.

Alternately, we should construct a secure meeting venue near Wagah where Pakis can come, have their meetings and go back without entering the rest of India. A special permit can be issued for this purpose.

After the david headly fiasco, there is a delibrate policy of not giving visas to dual citizen pakis as well as to seminar hopping pakis from pakiland.

Just screw these buggers. paki scholar is an oxymoron.

Yeah yeah all that's good but "Paki scholars" have a point they can beat us with, which is that India shouldn't be allowed to host international conferences if it doesn't allow certain categories of people based on nationality/ethnicity to enter. Whatever we may say about it, this argument may be a decisive one in some situations, so we need plausible deniability.

There is a huge difference between denying visas to specific "scholars" and a blanket ban. We can continue to have an onerous, time-consuming and downright unpleasant vetting process, but we should be prepared to give a visa from time to time so we don't end up getting blacklisted.

"Naya Pakistan" Back In The News . Again !

Imran Khan unveils PTI manifesto 'Road to Naya Pakistan'
July 09, 2018
Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan on Monday unveiled his party's much-awaited manifesto for general elections 2018, announcing that he would turn Pakistan into a welfare state if voted into power.
He "forgot" to prefix it with "Islamic"
Titled "Road to Naya Pakistan", ( road full of potholes :D . You need money to fix the road !) the manifesto is composed of seven chapters ( is there a "significance" to the number 7 , now that Immy has come into the influence of the sufi-istic Peerni  ) and explains in detail the PTI's agenda for the next government.
One of the primary points of the manifesto, Khan said, is to turn Pakistan into a Islamic welfare state — a model the principles of which he said are also followed in Scandinavian countries.
Mistake corrected . Islamic will be , the Paki welfare state :D . But should not the Kaptaan's model be Saudi Arabia instead of Norway and Sweden . It is Islamic, it is a "welfare state", taking "care" of you- from cradle to grave , but only IF you are a Saudi Born Arab. As Allah has blessed it ( like Scandinavian countries ) with Black Gold . What has Allah-tallah blessed Pakiland with, except with a "huge youth bulge" and a growing scarcity of water, besides electricity !
"We will make the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) autonomous and pursue all cases of corruption," Khan said. "We will empower the people and devolve the power to the village level. "We will introduce a non-political model of policing like the one in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to the rest of the provinces as well. And to ensure that Pakistanis get instant and quality justice, we will introduce comprehensive judicial reforms."
Talk is cheap ! Bullshit walks and money talks and the illiterate Abduls will lap it all up !
The PTI chief further said that his party would boost the economy by creating 10 millions jobs and promoting small-to-mid-level industries. "We will make Pakistan business-friendly and turn the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) into a game-changer by enhancing bilateral relations." ditto!
Khan said that his party would safeguard national security and defeat the terrorists' narrative, human resources, finances and weaponry to tackle the internal threats the country faces. However, he said that in order to curb the proliferation of arms and ammunition at international level, the PTI government would also invite India for strategic discussions.
Fauj and Deep State OK with this invite . IMO, it has to be ! Pakiland knows that it goose is cooked ( like the previous USSR) if it competes with India in a arms race. It is a recipe for future disaster. Hence the "advance feeler" to India . Reminds one of Pajwa's recent offer to India for "talks"
He also delineated his party's environmental agenda, saying that they would "plant 10 billion trees (Sialkot statistics . Again ) to tackle environmental changes."

The Fauj is shooting itself int he foot. If it goes after both PML-N and PPP, then what is going to stop from these two parties coming together after the elections to form a coalition government? That would be a nightmare scenario for the fauj and dimmy.

A couple of years back when ex paki and dual paki citizens from UK and US started getting denials for India Visa's there was much chest beating amongst the pakis who wanted the US Ambassador In India and some UK/Commonwealth body involved in pressurizing India. These Paki's wanted to think they are entitled to come to India anytime on the UK/US/Canada/Australia passports and then indulge in pakistaniyat here.

Saudi Sends Dates (But No Dollars) To Pakistan :D

Saudi govt gifts 80 tons dates for people of Pakistan
ISLAMABAD – The Saudi government has handed over a gift of 80 tons of dates to the World Food Program for distribution among the needy people of Pakistan to help meet their nutritional needs. The Charged Affairs of the Embassy Habiballah Al-Bukhari handed over the consignment of dates to the World Food Representative Finbarr Curran before inking an agreement, at a ceremony held here at the embassy of Saudi Arabia. The World Food Program would distribute the dates amongst the registered families on behalf of the Government of Saudi Arabia.
Dollars would be preferred. But beggars cannot be choosers .
The donation has come from the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre that has emerged as an international model of excellence for the provision of humanitarian aid.Saudi Charge d’ Affairs Habiballah Al-Bukhari said the gift of the dates to Pakistan was an annual feature and reflective of the fraternal bonds between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
Pakistan gifts (of the shelf !) "atom bum" to Saudia and Saudia "reciprocates" with just " Dates from The Land Of The Two Holy Mosques". Not a fair exchange IMO !
Finbarr Curran WFP Representative and Country Director said his organization has had a long-standing relationship with Pakistan and had also worked with Saudi Arabia in assisting it to reach out to the needy people across the globe. The dates provide a range of essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals, and pointed out that their consumption contributes towards ensuring diet diversity which in turn helps reduce micronutrient deficiencies, said Finbarr.
But the Paki population on the other hand, it at risk of increased diabetes from this "rich sugar loaded" fruit. The plus side being that dates is also known as an aphrodisiac . So, obviously , population control is going to be the first casualty of this gift. More "youth bulge" and more bhooka nanga Pakis roaming the gallis and alleys of Pakiland

Messr. Mush & Co Caught In Paki N.A.B. Net :D

NAB directs Musharraf, son & daughter to appear on Wednesday
July 9, 2018
RAWALPINDI – Rawalpindi office of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has directed son, daughter and son in law of former President Pervez Musharraf for the appearance on Wednesday. NAB is probing a case of corruption and assets of billions of rupees against the former president. It has already directed Pervez Musharraf and wife to appear before it tomorrow.Colonel (retd) Inam-ur-Raheem ( ISI  ) advocate had submitted an application against Pervez Musharraf.
Son is in Massaland. Not sure where daughter and son-in-law is "hiding" with their portion of the loot . Super fast Concorde Service is no more . So, at least "some grace period" should surely be given to them to make it to Pakiland from wherever. And what about Mush. He does not have a valid passport , although he is "just around the corner in Dubai"

You and many other poster seem to live in a parallel universe much like Donaldbhai. Fact is that we need to keep up appearances of due process, and blanket ban is not due process. So occasionally we need to let someone in so they won't have a stick to beat us with.

Imagine you are in the US, trying to host a conference in India, and during the board discussions imagine that someone says "Indian government refuses visas for Paki origin Americans" and is pushing to move the conference to say Bangkok. What do you do? Nod your head and agree? Or say "that's not true, there is a process and while it may take time, it is possible to get visas" - that's enough to shut him up and discussion moves forward.

Overt jingoism doesn't work well in multilateral situations, so need to practice it a little subtly. That's it on this topic from me.

- CJP says that Paki Sports Board should "bell the Deep State Cat" and take over the Land !
-CJP says that a "Mush Era Notification, with respect to this Club is declared null and void !
- CJP says that he will "take the lead" in building a polytechnic on this land !

And how many conferences have we lost out because of our visa policies vis-a-vis paki origin applicants. There is a due process right now and the due process is that all people of Paki origin go through a separate process to get an Indian visa and almost all of them are rejected. National security at stake and people are worried about appearances and missing out on conferences.

Expect Some Fri-din Fireworks When Ganja's Plane Lands In La-Whore On Friday The Thirteenth

Lahore Airport Will be Shut Down on the Arrival of Nawaz and Maryam Sharif
Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif along with his daughter Maryam Nawaz are to be sent to Islamabad as soon as their flight lands on Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport.
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in Islamabad has announced that they have completed all the formalities necessary to arrest the ex-PM and his daughter, NAB spokesman Bilal Punnu said on Sunday. They would be shifted to jail the same day, he added. The law enforcement agencies have rolled out a security plan to handle the situation in the capital.
Expect some "action" when Ganja and his daughter are jostled, hustled and shoved ,transferred and bundled in the waiting (ISI) plane , which will take them to Isloo for "processing" to Adiala !
NAB’s announcement came shortly after the conference held by Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz in London where they announced their plan to return to Pakistan soon. The father-daughter duo were convicted after an accountability court announced its verdict in the Avenfield apartments reference.Maryam Nawaz confirmed on Saturday that, “We have decided to return on Friday (July 13).”The Sharif family members had been in London due to the former PM’s wife ongoing cancer treatment there.
Some people have speculated that the Begum's condition was "used" by Ganja and his PML Party to leverage maximum advantage for the elections !
The father-daughter duo have said that upon arriving, they will address their supporters in Lahore, on Friday. After which they will present themselves for arrest.Senator Mushahidullah Khan said “Workers from all across the country will reach the airport to welcome their leader.”
It will not be that easy to "gather at the airport" . Most likely the draconian Section 144 will already be in place and secondly all roads to and from the airport will be completely shut. Almost like a curfew . Inconvenience to the "awaam" and for those, who had booked their flights long time ago, will just have to "bite the bullet" and take the day off. The authorities are probably ready/ prepared for a "showdown" between Ganja supporters, the security staff , and anti-Ganja PTI supporters who are also ready to "welcome" Nawaz back to Pakiland
An accountability court handed Nawaz Sharif a 10-year jail term along with a fine of 8 million pounds on Friday for assets it said Sharif would not have been able to afford with his income, such as luxury flats in London. Sharif’s daughter was also sentenced to jail for 7 years and Sharif’s son in law, Captain (r) Safdar for 1 year of imprisonment for abetting them.
Captain Safdar has already been arrested from Rawalpindi, by National Accountability Bureau’s investigation team and is currently in NAB’s office G-6 Markaz, Islamabad.
Most likely he has cut a "separate deal" with the Deep State . In lieu of "lenient treatment" , he may "rat on" Ganja and provide more juicy details on the corruption factor , facts or pseudo facts, who knows !

Looks Like The N.A.B. Noose Is Tightening Around Dus Percenti As CJP Saquib Works Overtime On Sunday To Fast Track The Slow Pace Of Enquiry

Money laundering scam: Asif Zardari barred from traveling abroad
ISLAMABAD: PPP chief Asif Zardari, his sister Faryal Talpur and five others have been placed on the 'stop list' by the Federal Investigation Agency as they were among the beneficiaries of a multi-billion rupee money laundering scam.
The apex court had on Sunday  ( all work and no play makes Saquib a dull boy :D ) ordered to place the names of heads of three private banks on the Exit Control List (ECL) in relation to a fake bank accounts case.
The order came as Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar took notice of the slow pace of inquiry into the case and conducted the proceedings on Sunday. The apex court has summoned seven fake bank account holders and 13 beneficiaries on July 12.Former president Asif Ali Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur are among those who have been issued notices to appear before the top court on the given date.
Do not see, Saquib, the errand boy, acting like this on his own . Most likely, must have "cleared this action" from someone in the Deep State !
Meanwhile, Nasir Abdullah, Ansari Sugar Mills, Omani Polymer Packages, Pak Ethanol Private Limited, Chambar Sugar Mills, Agro Farm Thatta, Zardari Group, Parthenon Private Limited, AOne International, Lucky International, Logistic Trading, Royal International and Ameer Associate are among the beneficiaries named in the fake bank accounts case.
The IGP Sindh has been directed by the apex court to ensure that all those summoned are present for the hearing on July 12
On Friday , the 13th , Saquib just might be "summoned" by his "bosses" to La-Whore or Isloo to process Ganja's detention to Adiala , when he lands , so it HAS to be Thursday ! :D
During the hearing, Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar ordered making a report like the Panama Joint Investigation Team (JIT) on the matter as soon as possible. The chief justice also barred the chief executive officers (CEOs) of Summit Bank, Sindh Bank and United Bank Limited (UBL) from traveling abroad in connection with the money laundering case.
The way, this CJP is going, he might well be PM, President, CJP and COASall rolled into one persona !
The chief justice asked the Director General Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Bashir Memon to give the court the investigation files. Saquib does not trust anyone ! Bashir Memon informed the court that the case involved 29 fake accounts on seven people’s names. He said over Rs35 billion were funnelled through these accounts at the three banks.
Summit Bank Vice-Chairman Hussain Lawai, who is also a close aide of Asif Ali Zardari, was arrested by the FIA in this case on July 6.“Tell us whose names the accounts were on,” the chief justice asked Memon, adding that he wanted to know who was behind the whole scam.
The DG FIA said all the beneficiaries of the accounts had been issued notices. Justice Saqib Nisar criticised Memon for acting slowly and said the court will issue notices to the accused itself.
This is not the first time that CJP Nisar has reprimanded, criticized a fellow judge . One of these days, the "built up resentment" against this Pakjabi will explode !
“This is an important issue,” the chief justice said, asking why the FIA was being so hesitant.
The "wheels of justice" grindly slowly ! Someone should have the "guts" to say this to Saquib Sahib. You do not want an innocent person to land in jail !
Justice Ijazul Ahsan remarked that the people in whose names the accounts were made likely had no idea of their existence. Memon said that Rs35 billion had already been funnelled through the Summit Bank. He said that so far, they had received the records of only one account, adding that the banks are not cooperating with the FIA.
Saquib HAS the authority to summon the Chairman and the Chief Executives of these banks within the next 24 hours !!!*

* unless the "justices" have made a deal with the Banks and are "hesitant" to mention this to the "honest CJP"

Armed forces contribute 2-day salary for dams
RAWALPINDI: The officers of all three services of Pakistan Armed Forces – Army, Navy and Airforce – will contribute their two days’ pay while soldiers one day’s pay to the announced fund for construction of Diamer-Basha and Mohmand dams. This has been announced by Director-General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Major-General Asif Ghafoor in a tweet.
This is equivalent to a "drop in the bucket" . The seniors afsars of the Paki fauj should be "forced" to part with their share of the looted wealth - salted here and in Swiss Banks ! Ditto for the retired Generals, Brigadiers and Colonels . CJP Saquib should take "due note" and open a New File on this subject of fauji corruption !

We as a nation must hang our heads in shame...
In one week alone, we send 12 crore rupees to India to support its war against Pakistan by watching its movies in Pakistan. ( Pakis prefer Bollywood fare over Lollywood fare  )
But we did not contribute anything to the Dam fun created by the CJ Saqib Nisar.
Disgusting shame!!

CJP Nisar Does Not Like That Dar, The Fraudster Is Taking Him For A "Royal Ride" :D

Will cancel Dar’s passport if he returns: CJP
July 9, 2018
ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Saqib Nisar on Monday remarked that Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) leader Ishaq Dar will be brought back no matter what it takes.CJP Nisar headed a hearing at the Supreme Court (SC) pertaining to the PTV MD appointment case.During the hearing, CJP was irked by the absence of the former Finance Minister Ishaq Dar despite being summoned by the court.
CJP Nisar while conducting the proceedings remarked that if Dar returns, will surely cancel his passport for not respecting the apex court’s orders. He added that the court will consider cancelling the former minister’s passport or issuing a red warrant.CJP asserted that at every hearing Dar’s old medical certificate is re-submitted when hes evidently seen walking about and around in a healthy state. heart trouble does not show up on your face, when you are walking on the streets of London, Mr CJP :D
Does anyone seriously think that Dar, a London trained Chartered Accountant, Ex Finance Minister, brother-in-law of Ganja Sharif, and architect of Ganja's gol-maal financial dealing, is going to have a change of heart and nostalgia for La-Whore and land in Pakiland ? He is laughing all the way to his main London Bank. What does he care. Therefore, the CJP will have to think of something else to bring him back . Interpol may or may not help

Did Not Know That COAS Pajwa And CJP Nisar Are In Imran Khan And PTI's Back Pocket :D

PTI candidate who used army chief, CJP's photos on campaign posters disqualified
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday disqualified a Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) candidate who used the pictures of the chief justice of Pakistan and the army chief in his campaign advertisements and posters. PTI's candidate from Gujranwala's PP-53 constituency, Nasir Cheema, was ruled ineligible to contest the July 25 elections after he was found to have violated the electoral code of conduct issued by the commission.
The ECP had quizzed Cheema over the controversial posters last week and asked him to submit a reply explaining as to why he should not be disallowed from contesting the polls.“Are they related to you? What is the army chief’s and CJP’s link to the elections? On what basis did you put up their pictures?” an infuriated Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sardar Mohammad Raza Khan had asked the PTI candidate.
IMO, "candidate Cheema" was just being "brutally honest" . It is an open secret in Pakiland that, in this election, the "angels" are on the side of Imran. He is their preferred "ladla", so what is so wrong in displaying the picture of Pajwa and Nisar , who are the "face of the angels"
On Monday, Cheema, along with his lawyer Gohar Ali Khan, appeared before a five-member bench headed by the CEC and submitted a reply.
The lawyer initially was of the stance that the photos of Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa and Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar had been edited onto the posters, which he said did not belong to his client's electoral campaign. He said the posters in question were put up in solidarity with Supreme Court judge Justice Ijazul Ahsan after unknown gunmen opened fire on his residence in April.
"Do the army and judiciary need your sympathy?" he asked the candidate. Cheema's lawyer then argued that the posters were put up before ECP issued the code of conduct.
After hearing all arguments, the ECP bench reserved the verdict on the matter. It later ruled Cheema disqualified from the electoral race for using photos of two heads of institutions on the posters. The CEC had emphasised during the last hearing that it was not a question of when the posters had been put on display, and asked Cheema to understand the question as to why these images had been put up at all.
Lesson learnt

The Chinese rocket that launched this satellite does carry SUPARCO livery and Pakistan flag. Now cue years of every article, every TV show about the mythical Baki space programme carrying these images.

KARACHI:
Just a day after the announcement of Avenfield verdict, videos showing unidentified men apparently attempting to trespass Nawaz Sharif’s London apartment started surfacing online. The first video by @badnocs on Twitter showed the former premier encountering unidentified men who kept hurling abuses at him before he entered his house. One of the men is then seen throwing a trolley at one of Nawaz’s companions too.
In another video by @BhittaniKhannnn, a few men could be seen kicking the main door of the Avenfield apartment and trying to break in as another threw eggs on the door.
In yet another footage, dozens of people holding Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) flags are seen protesting and chanting slogans outside the Avenfield apartment.
Last time, it was a PTI man who violated Kulsoom's privacy by barging into her hospital room. IK later apologized on behalf of PTI and send a bouquet of flowers to the "Sharif" family . :D . This time, the PTI crowd emboldened by the guilty verdict are showing their Pakistaniyat in London and taking the law in their own hands
Nawaz and his daughter Maryam are scheduled to reach Lahore on Friday evening to surrender themselves to the authorities in the Avenfield case. :D
On July 6, in a verdict which will echo across the political landscape of Pakistan for decades, the accountability court hearing the Avenfield reference sentenced deposed prime minister Nawaz to 10-years imprisonment and daughter Maryam to seven years.
"Selective justice" again wins in Pakiland !
The former prime minister’s son-in-law, Safdar, was also sentenced to a year in prison. Nawaz was further fined eight million pound sterling and Maryam was slapped with a two million pound fine. The court also ordered their properties to be forfeited in favour of the federal government. Maryam’s sentence includes a year in prison due to her involvement in the Calibri font scandal. :((

Due To Lack Of Funds And Extreme Poverty The Welfare Of Pakistani Children Is Now Outsourced To Non- Islamic Countries Like Canada

Monthly "donations" ( so -called sponsoring commitments !) from Non- Islamic Donors [ i.e. mostly infidel Christians , (who by the way are persecuted in Pakistan ! ) are also "most welcome" ]

PS: These include orphaned and abandoned children and where the Paki State, due to lack of funds has washed its hands of this primary responsibility. Wide selection of "sponserees" . Playing on the "guilt factor" of the gullible Christians :!:

Helicopter Ride To Adiala Jail For Ganja And His Daughter :D

NAB to shift Nawaz, Maryam to Adiala Jail through helicopter
Jul 10, 2018
ISLAMABAD: Finalizing strategy to make high-profile arrests following the court orders in Avenfield case, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has decided to take into custody former premier Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz and move them via helicopter to Adiala Jail as they land at the Lahore airport on July 13.
According to sources, the accountability watchdog also decided that the two Sharif family members won’t be allowed to come out of the jet after their plane touches down the Lahore airport.
Director General NAB Lahore, Shehzad Saleem, through his letter, requested the NAB chairman to provide helicopter for transferring the two high-profile political figures. The letter states that any rally on the day could create difficulties in arresting the top two PML-N figures.
The NAB fears that law and order situation in the Punjab capital may worsen on July 13 due to N-League rally.
There is absolutely no doubt that the once "Shere-e-Punjab" die -hard and hard core supporters will be outraged and may well take the law in their own hands to protest such a treatment accorded to their "Leader"
Meanwhile, at least 24 spots in Lahore have been declared sensitive for security reasons ahead of the arrival of convicted Sharifs. A plan has also been devise to deploy 2,500 security personnel on the day Nawaz returns to Pakistan.
The draconian Sec 144 must have been imposed as well !
Judge Muhammad Bashir found Mr. Sharif guilty of accumulating assets beyond his known sources of income.
But no such guilty verdict has yet been imposed on General Kayani and other faujis who are known to be corrupt as well. Selective justice !
The judge earlier rejected an application filed by the former prime minister seeking a seven-day postponement of the verdict.

The Decline And Fall Of Nawaz Sharif
By Vikram Sood
July 9, 2018
POSTED IN FULL
New Delhi [India], Jul 9 (ANI): In the doctrine of the Pakistan Army, talking to India means admitting defeat. On the other hand, engaging India in a war, even it means losing in it, is actually a victory of Pakistan and Islam. The argument is- each time Pakistan loses, it is not because of Indians' superiority. Pakistan loses as it's not Islamic enough, and hence it must become more Islamic. And, that is how it has happened after every defeat. Besides, the only battles this Islamic Republic of Pakistan wins are actually those that it launches against its own people and politicians.
The Army's battles with its politicians are as old as Pakistan, and these conflicts started even when Jinnah was alive. Pakistan's Islamic battles started with India in 1947 and have continued since then, in one form or the other. Midway through the Zardari government, the Generals began to get impatient. The infamous Memogate Scandal of 2011 was meant to destabilize Zardari, but he survived. Husain Haqqani, Pakistan's Ambassador in Washington DC, however, paid a price and had to quit.
At this stage, it seems that Tahir-ul-Qadri, a Canadian scholar of the Pakistani origin, was drawn into the battle by the Generals. Qadri, the founder of Pakistan Awami Tehrik and Minhaj-ul-Quran, led a "million-men march" in January 2013. This led to the Islamabad Long March declaration with the government promising reforms and transparency in the election process. There were suspicions about Qadri's credentials and source of funding, given his known closeness to the Army. The march was seen as a ploy to scuttle elections that year and weaken the civilian governance.
The current engagement between the Pakistan Army and the Nawaz Sharif government has a longer history, dating back to the time when Nawaz forced the Army Chief, General Jehangir Karamat to resign in October 1998. This was seen by many, especially the Army, as a violation of the Constitution. Then came the famous fall out between Nawaz and General Pervez Musharraf after Pakistan bit the dust in Kargil conflict, 1999.
The Army-Nawaz relations have never been easy since his ouster by Musharraf and long exile in Saudi Arabia. Even in his first term (1990-1993) as the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif fancied himself as Fateh-e-Kabul. After the Soviets left Afghanistan; he wanted to amend the Constitution in order to get anointed as Amir-ul-Momineen (Commander of the Faithful). Nawaz, who allowed himself to be flattered by the coterie of Generals led by Musharraf, assumed that he could win the Battle of Kargil in May 1999 and go down in history as Fateh-e-Srinagar.
The idea in Nawaz's latest tenure was to test out his early innings, keep him under pressure and prevent his re-election. His activities had already caused sleepless nights and their former protege was getting too independent. He was seen to be getting too close to Narendra Modi, and worse, he threatened to try a former Army Chief, Pervez Musharraf for treason.
The present political crisis that has led to the ouster of Sharif from the current election battlefield, actually began in 2014, within a year of his Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz or the PML (N) winning the 2013 elections. Pakistanis had rejoiced, not without reason, that democracy was taking roots in their country after more than 65 years of independence. But the feeling wasn't so in the Army.
n this democratic transition, achieved through the ballot box, lurked hidden devils for the Generals. A repeat of this kind of transition in the next elections in 2018 would surely threaten their primacy and needed to be countered as soon as possible. The famous Azadi March of Imran Khan's PTI in August 2014, was a month-long protest against alleged rigging of the 2013 elections by Nawaz Sharif. The Army refused to intervene. Qadri, undoubtedly encouraged by the Army, joined this protest march. This was followed by a sit-in strike in November 2017by Sunni Barelvi group demanding resignation of a minister and reaffirmation of the Blasphemy Law. The Army eventually intervened and Pakistan Army officers were caught on video distributing cash to the protesters.
It must have been around that time that the Bonapartes of Pakistan decided to act. The leakage of the Panama Papers, surfaced in 2016, was the excuse Army needed to intervene. The Supreme Court disqualified Nawaz in 2017 from holding any public office for life and later also barred him from holding any position in the PML (N). The latest setback caused by the conviction in money-laundering case, is the decision of the National Accountability Bureau, which found Nawaz and his political aspirant daughter Mariam, guilty of corruption in the Avenfield Properties (London) case. Nawaz has been sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment and his daughter to seven years, in addition to hefty fines on both.
Although Nawaz put a brave front and asserted he would return to Pakistan from London as soon as his ailing wife recovers, it is not known if he will ever come back. Without him at the hustings, the PML (N) election campaign seems to be going adrift, as his brother Shahbaz Sharif, who has his own prime ministerial ambitions, just does not have the charisma of Nawaz. The media is under pressure, and a number of right wing parties like the Jamat-ut-Dawa, are using the little known outfit Allahu Akbar Party, for nominating 265 candidates, who will be spoilers for PML (N). These parties may not themselves win seats but are bound to take away some votes from the mainstream parties. This will create space for Imran Khan in Punjab, and he would be able to get a sizable number of seats. Nawaz is still considered as a force to be reckoned with but his return would surely lead to his arrest and the consequential sympathy factor is difficult to calculate.
In the past, Nawaz showed resilience when 18 years ago, during the reign of General Musharraf, he was sentenced to 14 years' imprisonment and was barred to contest elections for 21 years. But five years ago, all was forgiven, a deal was struck and Nawaz came back to contest and win elections. Maybe he still has the same spirit but maybe he does not have that much time.
There are other imponderables. It is quite possible the Army would prefer the more amenable and vulnerable Shahbaz Sharif as prime minister over Imran Khan. In any case, neither candidate should secure enough seats to act independently of the Army. Micromanaging and manipulating elections and candidates is a better way to stage a coup than sending in the 111 Brigade from Rawalpindi.
Unfortunately, so long as the Pakistan Army remains fixed on a doctrine that concentrates solely on being anti-India, it is not going to allow elected politicians any freedom to decide policies. It is also unfortunate because under its Army's tutelage, Pakistan continues to swing increasingly towards radicalism and intolerance. Mainstreaming jihadists and bringing them into the political arena will ultimately rebound on the country. The idea of political parties, who have thousands of trained, armed and murderous militants as political workers, should normally be chilling but the Pakistani state apparently treats them as social workers. One can already see the kind of statements emanating from leaders like Imran Khan with unequivocal support to the recent Islamabad High Court judgement on the Khatme Nabuwat case that disallows Ahmediyas to use Muslim names. With barely three weeks to go for Pakistani general elections, the situation looks unclear. It may not be a full stop for Nawaz Sharif but there is definitely a question mark. Whoever wins, nothing will change for India under present circumstances. (ANI)
The Pakistan Army will not allow anyone to talk "peace" with India. It would be their death knell !
