Dollar hits Rs124.5 as rupee free-fall continues
Pakistani currency is under severe pressure currently as US dollar surged to historic Rs 124.5 in the open market on Tuesday, increasing the volume of foreign debt.
The US dollar climbed to a new high of Rs 122 in the interbank market and reached historic Rs 124.5 in the open market.
The local currency is under pressure due to depleting foreign exchange reserves which currently stand at $10 billion. The reserves are tumbling due to widening of current trade deficit and repayment of loans.
The country would have to repay $2.5 billion in next couple of months
Caretaker Finance Minister Dr Shamshad Akhtar had already hinted at further rupee depreciation.
The rupee depreciation would help increase the country’s exports and control imports. (err...how?)
The falling value of rupee against dollar is indicative of a weak economy. 8)

(Second) Warning Sounded By ( "Friendly" ) German Amb !

German Ambassador warns Pakistani visa seekers to avoid fake credentials
ISLAMABAD – German Ambassador to Pakistan, Martin Kobler has warned German visa aspirants to stay away from fraudulent consultants and facilitators in a bit to save their time and money. In a recent Twitter message, Kobler said that they have rejected and blacklisted more than 95 visa applications of students from Lahore Grammar School and Connecting Cultures, seeking education in Germany on exchange programs to Europe.
Pakis are desperate to get out of Pakiland ASAP !
Martin Kobler @KoblerinPAK
URGENT! VISA Applicants. Again:Stay away from consultants and facilitators! "Lahore Grammar School" and "Connecting Cultures" caused blacklisting or 95 visa applicants for student exchange trip to europe. providing fake documents to the visasection, including fake hotel vouchers.
Kobler revealed that the students were blacklisted because they had submitted fake hotel vouchers and forged documents. He requested visa applicants to avoid submitting fake and forged documents in their applications.
Friendly on social media ( wearing shalwaar kameez) does not translate into "going easy" on visa applications
Moreover, the German Embassy also blacklists the fraudulent consultants so victims can take legal action against them.
The more "friendly" you become, the more they take advantage

Moody’s downgrades Pakistan’s rating outlook to negative
Moody’s Investors Service has downgraded Pakistan’s rating to negative from stable. A statement released by the credit rating agency in the evening on Wednesday stated that the decision to change the outlook to negative was driven by heightened external vulnerability risk as ongoing balance of payment pressures erode foreign exchange buffers.
Moody’s said that the foreign exchange reserves have fallen to low levels and in the absence of significant capital inflows ‘would will not be replenished over the next 12-18 months’ .
Moody’s affirmed the B-3 local and foreign currency long-term issuer and senior unsecured debt ratings.
Pakistan’s Ba3 local currency bond and deposit ceilings remain unchanged.
In other words, the sarkari khazana is (almost) khaali. Bring in immy the dimmy 'cause he knows how to solve any problem like a "kaptaan would stand tall against a tsunami".

Ganja Sharif Wants To Be In London . Pleads For More Extension From Deep State !

My wife is on ventilator, yet I got only four days of exemption, says Nawaz Sharif
June 21, 2018
ISLAMABAD: Former PM Nawaz Sharif said that he got only four days of exemption from court appearances even though his wife, Begum Kulsoom Nawaz , is on life support. It has been seven days since the former first lady has been on the ventilator at Harley Street Clinic in London. Doctors say that her condition is critical and she is under day-long observation.
Not only that, but he is also being demonized in the Paki press !
On the other hand, Nawaz is facing proceedings against his family regarding three corruption references.“I can’t leave my wife alone,” said the former PM. “I have been given only four days of exemption in such trying times.”
Kulsoom has been under treatment in London for throat cancer. She was admitted to the intensive care unit on June 14 when she suffered a cardiac arrest. APP/AFP

Father And Son Both "Shareef" "Enjoy" Two Wives Under The "Generous" Laws Of Malsi

Polygamous Shehbaz, Hamza Sharif declare assets worth millions in nomination papers
LAHORE – The nomination papers submitted for the upcoming general elections 2018 reveal that president of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) and former Chief Minister of Punjab Shahbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz own assets worth millions.
Nothing new here !
The affidavit shows that the younger Sharif is husband of two wives named Tehmina Durrani and Nusrat.
There were unconfirmed rumours that he had "tied the (Islamic ) knot with a third !
Hamza also followed the footstep of his father in relationships as he has two wives: Rabia and Mehrunisa though he did not mention anything about his alleged wife Ayesha Ahad, with whom he reached a settlement brokered by the top judge.
Both son and father are prolific "breeders" and collectors of spouses !

A Rogue Nuclear Power Goes To The Polls

FATAH: A rogue nuclear power goes to the polls — and it's not Iran or North Korea

Tarek Fatah
Much has been made of U.S. President Donald Trump abandoning the Iran nuclear deal and obtaining a commitment from North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un for a complete denuclearization of his country. However, the country that is guilty of nuclear proliferation and selling nuclear technology to Iran and North Korea has managed to escape any scrutiny, sanctions or even a slap on the wrist.
I am referring to Pakistan, a country that has the fastest growing arsenal of nuclear weapons, varying from 60-km-range tactical nukes to the medium range ballistic missile Shaheen-3 that can hit a target of 2,750 km away. This would for the first time bring Israel within range of Pakistani nuclear missiles.
And yet, for some reason, none of the players involved seem to care what happens inside Pakistan; not even Israel, which after India is the other target of Pakistan’s nukes. Not a single mainstream newspaper, TV network or the scores of “analysts“ have a clue about the dangers first exposed in 2007 by Adrian Levy and Catherine Scott-Clark in their 580-page bombshell, “Deception — Pakistan, the United States and the Secret Trade in Nuclear Weapons.”
Pakistan has always been a "darling of the west " and still is !
Pakistan-born Hassan Abbas, professor at National Defense University, Washington, D.C., has published his doctoral thesis on the subject titled, “Pakistan’s Nuclear Bomb – A Story of Defiance, Deterrence and Deviance.” The book has been described as the most comprehensive study to date on how Pakistan got its bomb and how the country’s military and deep state worked outside the civilian administration to proliferate nuclear technology to Iran and North Korea. The alarming part of Hassan’s finding is about control and safety of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons and the possibility of them falling into the wrong hands due to “recurrent political instability and strengthening [of the] crime-terror nexus.”
As for A.Q. Khan, the mythical man worshipped in Pakistan as the “father of the Islamic Bomb,“ prof Hassan writes, it was Khan’s “phobia” that the U.S. and Israel would target the Pakistani nuclear arsenal and his individual agenda to help more Muslim countries gain the nuclear bomb that became reasons for him to continue proliferation on his own accord at a later stage. And of course, he made money and "invested" the proceeds in buying a hotel in Timbuktu, Mali !
And so, on July 25, the nuclear state of Pakistan, a country created as the first “Islamic State“ in history, will go to the polls to elect a new national parliament and four provincial assemblies.Already the military machinery has thrown its weight behind the man known as “Taliban Khan,“ the cricketer turned Islamist Imran Khan. Former prime minister Nawaz Shariff, though, is riding high in opinion polls and is likely to sweep the vote-rich Punjab. The more Pashtun, Baloch and Sindhi nationalists along with Punjabi liberals fed up with the hysteria of Hindu and Jew hatred challenge Imran Khan’s dubious Islamist agenda, the more I feel the military will not allow the voice of reason to prevail. But a month is a long time in fractured Pakistan.

After Water Shortage, Food Shortage To Follow

40% of food wasted globally is in Pakistan
Islamabad: Food waste produced globally each year is more than enough to feed the nearly 1 billion hungry people in the world. It is estimated that 40 per cent of food is wasted in Pakistan.
Did not know that Pakistan is the holder of this dubious world record. The issue was discussed at the launching ceremony of a new campaign aimed at raising awareness against food wastage by Oxfam in Pakistan, in partnership with Indus Consortium.
The #SaveFoodFightHunger campaign aims to address the national problem through raising awareness, providing food saving tips, practicing moderation, encouraging residents, restaurants and hotels to prepare limited amounts of food and giving edible food to the needy through food drives and charities.
In Pakistan enough food is produced to feed the entire population but because of food waste an estimated 6 out of 10 people go to bed hungry. On the Global Hunger Index out of 118 developing countries, Pakistan is ranked at 107.
And yet Pakiland is a lucrative market for new restaurants, new food trends, etc etc !
Indus Consortium’s National Coordinator Hussain Jarwar, requested the attending students, teachers and other civil society actors to sensitise their family members to not waste food either cooked or uncooked.
The food awareness campaign is part of Oxfam’s GROW campaign, a global initiative since 2013, to build a better food system: one that sustainably feeds a growing population and empowers poor people to earn a living, feed their families, and thrive. Oxfam in Pakistan’s GROW campaign is about bringing people together to create solutions—for food, fairness, and the future of our planet. Join us and together, we can win the fight against hunger.Bottom of Form
Top people should set an example . Ganja Sharif is a well known food addict . He should wean himself away from "rich" food . Stick to simple fare, vegetarian if possible

Apart from being a relative and business partner of PM Abbasi, not sure what credential this young person brings to the important job. Sifarish appointment no doubt and must have also got the seal of approval from Deep State. Or maybe, Deep State is sending a message to massa by sending an inexperienced lad to this job

Mush "Explains" Why He Did Not Return To His Beloved Pakiland

Musharraf explains why he put off his return
ISLAMABAD: All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) chairman retired Gen Pervez Musharraf has said that he was all set to return to the country but the Supreme Court order forced him to change his mind.
Excuses ! Excuses !
Speaking to journalists through a video link, the former president said the apex court order “barring the authorities from arresting me till my appearance before the august court has forced me to rethink my plans about return”.“There will be no benefit of my return to the country if I am arrested just after my appearance before the court,” he said.
“The entire world knows that I am not a coward, but now I will wait for an appropriate time to return,” Mr Musharraf said.
Attack is the best form of defense
In reply to a question about the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) probe into his assets, the former army chief said he was living in a three-bedroom apartment ( in a posh locality :D ) and the bureau must investigate his assets and he would fully cooperate with it.

Pakistan’s army is using every trick to sideline Nawaz Sharif
Jun 21st 2018| Islamabad
EARLIER this month a spokesman for Pakistan’s army decided to respond to claims that it was attempting to fix next month’s general election. It would not be the first time. In 1990, for instance, the army-dominated spy agency, Inter-Services Intelligence, funnelled cash to opponents of the left-wing Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), helping to secure its defeat. The military spokesman, General Asif Ghafoor, sternly denied that any such “engineering” was going on this time around. But a pile of evidence to the contrary is poking through the camouflage. :D
The object of the army’s meddling is Nawaz Sharif, who was ousted as prime minister by the courts last year. Mr Sharif had been the beneficiary of the army’s largesse in 1990, when he began his first stint as prime minister. But they soon fell out.
He resigned under pressure from the army in 1993 and was toppled again by it in a coup in 1999. Mr Sharif returned to power in 2013 eager to assert civilian control of foreign and security policy, which the army regards as its exclusive domain. In reply, the army undermined Mr Sharif, backing a months-long street protest by a big opposition party, the Pakistan Movement for Justice (PTI), aimed at overthrowing his government. It also refused the government’s request for help in dispersing another group of protesters that had blocked a busy intersection last year. A general was photographed at the scene handing money to the protesters.
The army bristles at claims that it steered the Supreme Court to remove Mr Sharif last year on flimsy charges of “dishonesty”. But Mr Sharif (pictured, with gun) blames its unseen hand.
Indeed, Mr Sharif is trying to turn the impending election into a referendum on his treatment by the generals, although he coyly refers to them using such codewords as “the establishment” and “aliens”. Last month he accused the army of facilitating a terrorist attack in India in 2008, in which 166 people were killed. Never has the army felt its privileged position so threatened, says Talat Masood, a former general.
mran Khan, the leader of PTI, does not deny that the army interferes in politics. He says a stronger civilian government (meaning one led by him) is the answer. He may have his way. PTI has benefited from a wave of defections from the PML-N in the most populous province, Punjab. In private, many politicians admit to being pressed, in some cases with the threat of corruption charges, to leave the PML-N. If the PTI can make headway in Punjab, where the PML-N won 116 of 148 seats at the last election, in 2013, Mr Khan stands a good chance of becoming the leader of a coalition government. Such a government would be “preferable” to the army, adds Hussain Haqqani, a former diplomat.
Media outlets that caterwaul about all this become the victims of commercial crises. Geo, the most popular television station in the country, was mysteriously dropped by cable companies. They relented when it toned down its criticism of the judiciary and its support for Mr Sharif. Gul Bukhari, a journalist who supports the PML-N, was recently abducted for several hours. This week Dawn, a liberal newspaper, announced that it is being barred from distributing in much of the country. We are “110% muzzled”, sighs one journalist.
The only thing standing in the way of the army’s plan is voters’ apparent sympathy for Mr Sharif. His rallies draw large crowds. Polling by Gallup puts the PML-N 13 points ahead of the PTI nationally, and 20 points up in Punjab. “We know the establishment might attempt to manipulate the elections,” says Muzzafar Mughal, a resident of a swing district in the city of Rawalpindi, “but we will vote for him again.”
Indeed, many Pakistanis have recently begun expressing unheard-of criticism of the army. A burgeoning civil-rights organisation, the Pushtun Protection Movement (PTM), was formed last year to protest against the army’s tactics in its campaign against Islamist insurgents. The PTM accuses the army of indiscriminately flattening villages. It wants the UN to investigate the fate of 20,000 missing people, and calls for the removal of military checkpoints and curfews in the tribal regions where most of Pakistan’s 30m Pushtuns live.
The Army has labelled them agents of India and Afghanistan !
Non-Pushtuns are starting to support the PTM, a source of particular concern for the army. At the rally in Karachi, a 66-year-old woman from Balochistan, where locals have also long complained of military abuses, held up a picture of her son, missing for a year, for the cameras. Some generals counsel a softer response. The PTM activists awaiting trial have belatedly been granted bail, possibly a sign that the army is relenting slightly. But it does not seem to have the courage needed to make a broader retreat from politics.

Hafiz Suar Cannot Be Stopped

Hafiz Saeed launches 265 candidates across Pakistan for General Elections 2018
June 21, 2018
ISLAMABAD - JuD Chief Hafiz Saeed 's son and his son-in-law are among 265 candidates fielded by the Jamaat-ud -Dawah for national and provincial assembly seats across Pakistan in the July 25 general election, vowing to make the country a "citadel of Islam."The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) denied registration of the MML as a political party following objections from the Interior Ministry which argued that the entity was an offshoot of the JuD, led by Saeed, banned by a UN resolution.
With general elections approaching, the group decided to contest on the platform of a little known "dormant" political entity, Allaha-u-Akbar Tehreek (AAT), registered with the ECP.The nomination papers of all the MML backed candidates have been accepted by the Returning Officers during the scrutiny process, the MML said.
Orders from Deep State !
MML President Saifullah Khalid said that his party would not leave vacuum in July 25 elections for the secular forces as the country was "created in the name of Islam.""We have entered the political arena not to get power, but to fight corruption, eliminate politics of opportunism, strengthening ideology of Pakistan and making the country citadel of Islam," he said.

Insidious Attack On Ganja And His Cancer -Suffering Begum

Does Sharif family really own London's Harley Street Clinic?
LAHORE: Aitzaz Ahsan, former Federal Interior Minister, noted jurist and a key leader of the Pakistan People's Party leader, publicly aired doubts Thursday if London's prestigious privately-owned medical facility, the Harley Street Clinic, was a genuine cancer treatment hospital, besides suspecting it was owned by the Sharif family.
While former Pakistani Premier Nawaz Sharif's wife Kulsoom Nawaz is being treated for cancer and cardiac arrest at the Harley Street Clinic, former Pakistan Peoples' Party Federal Minister Dr. Asim Hussain's spouse has recently undergone a major cancer surgery at the associated wing of the same hospital, situated on the next street. London’s Harley Street Clinic is thus flashing headlines in Pakistani print and electronic media on daily basis due to its two high-profile patients, both of whom hail from distinguished political backgrounds and both of whom are suffering from cancer.
Rest of the story gives a price list of services offered by the Clinic , plus details of the staff manning the private clinic, plus history of ownership . Ganja is a "shrewd dehati politico". It is possible that all this may have been done to garner "sympathy vote" ahead of the crucial Paki election . In Paki politics , anything is possible . Or it could also be a ploy to further demonize the Sharif family by his political opponents

Dawn News ACCIDENTLY misreported Imran Khan’s assets
Maryam declares assets worth Rs845m, Imran Khan's assets come up to Rs38m
Correction: This story earlier erroneously reported PTI Chief Imran Khan's assets to be Rs3.8 billion. The total value of Mr Khan's assets, according to the Election Commission of Pakistan's document, stands at Rs38 million. The figures have been changed and the error is regretted. — Editor

Paki Candidate For Assembly Seat "Rises From The Dead"

Pakistani man declared ‘dead’ runs for provincial assembly seat
Image

In "Black And White" . Biometrics verified
THATTA – Pakistanis are so much excited about upcoming general elections and it seems nothing will stop them from contesting the elections, not even death.A person who was declared dead officially eight years ago has submitted his nomination papers from Thatta’s PS-78.Zakir Hussain is contesting the election for Sindh assembly seat
Could not "bear the suffering of his fellow Sindhis". Rose from the dead and decided to contest the election - most likely as an "independant" !
According to his death certificate, which was issued on December 10, 2010, the candidate died on September 22, 2010.Hussain apparently faked his own death to avoid being charged with fraud, however, the electoral race has infused new energy in the politician to try his luck in the cut-throat contest.
Goes to prove, how "easy" it is in Pakiland, to fake your own death !

From the 'Such Gup' section of this week's TFT:
Horrified journo

Our mole in Bunny Gala informs us that a female foreign journo went to the house on the hill to interview The Great Khan. The Khan held forth for a considerable period of time, answered all the questions, and let rip some choice rants against The Man of Steel. He wasn’t done, and neither was the journo, when there was an interruption and he excused himself to attend to something urgent. He then told the journo that his wife would show her around the house while he attended to the emergency. So, the journo was taken on a tour of the house.

Imagine the modern, Western hackette’s consternation when she was told by The Great Khanum, also known as Her Holiness, that certain walls in the house spoke to her. We’d heard that walls have ears, but it now transpires that they have tongues too. Her Holiness gestured towards a blank white wall and told the journalist that the wall spoke to her on a regular basis. Apparently, she also said that she talked back to the wall. As if that wasn’t enough, the journo saw some raw meat lying on a terrace beyond a glass partition. “W-w-what’s that for?” asked the tremulous journalist, expecting the worst. And it wasn’t long in coming, for Her Holiness informed the horrified woman that the meat for was “the djinns who live in this house”.
Imran has gone off the deep end and, when he becomes the Prime Minister in a couple of months, Pakistan will go down with him.

Minds of Pakistani Awam (Aam Abduls and Ayeshas) are already moving backwards into the eighth century.

Will The Chinese Company , Shanghai Electric, Now Be Able To Fix The Bijli Problems Of The Aam Abduls Of Karachi . Not , If This Letter To The Editor Of Friday Times Is To Be Believed. The consumers have been taken for a royal ride ever since Mush decided to privatize The Karachi Electric Supply Corporation ( KESC ) in 2005 in the name of efficiency and getting rid of corruption .
Karachi’s woes

Madam,

Karachi, the financial hub of Pakistan, has been facing water supply issues for decades. The city is now facing electricity problems. In 2005, General (R) Musharraf and his prime minister privatised Karachi Electric Supply Company to rid it of pilferages and corruption causing losses in excess of Rs66 Billion. It was given to Kingdom Holding, a Riyadh-based Saudi conglomerate. In 2009, Kingdom Holding was facilitated by the Pakistan Peoples Party government to sell 72.5 percent of its stock to Abraaj Capital, a private equity firm based in Dubai, which has now sold 66.4 percent of its stock to Shanghai Electric for $1.77 Billion.
Privatisation is successful in the developed world because of state-empowered regulation controls and good corporate governance coupled with strict accountability through solid systems of oversight by independent regulators. Assertive regulatory controls, through qualified inspectors with integrity and 24/7 oversight alone ensures fruits of privatization are enjoyed by all. Political appointees and ghost employees must be screened out for K-Electric and KWSB to deliver. In the absence of such measures privatisation opens door to nefarious practices and this is what happened with K-Electric. Abraaj agreed to inject over $361 million but managed to absolve itself in connivance with elected public office holders. Electricity theft in Karachi and interior Sindh is almost 70 percent and in such circumstances neither privatisation, nor state-owned distribution can perform.
Karachi’s Tanker Mafia originated from statutory housing society Defence Housing Authority, but now holds the entire city hostage. R.A.P.E Village Of Krachi !!!It has become a multi-billion business patronised by powerful individuals who seem to be more powerful than the state. Citizens of Karachi pay water charges levied by KWSB, but water rarely flows through the taps and instead it is supplied through tankers filled from water hydrants in the city.

Nuggets from the Urdu press
TFT TFT Issue: 15 Jun 2018

These nuggets are culled from the Urdu press. They are summarised here without comment.
Absurd or ridiculous, tft takes no responsibility for them.
Naswar ( Tobacco Chewing ) Warning By Airport Officials For Paki Abduls Embarking For Iraq ( Either to fight with ISIS  or going to Shia Pilgrimage Sites !) ( Items from Urdu Press - Per Friday Times !)

Daily Jang (21 May 2018) reported that Pakistani airports had imposed strict checks on travelers going to Iraq, especially those wearing shalwar-qameez, so as to prevent them from carrying naswar with them. This action is being taken after the Pakistani embassy in Baghdad informed Pakistani authorities that airport officials in Iraq had taken several Pakistanis into custody for carrying naswar – which the Iraqi officials feared was suspicious since it resembled prohibited narcotic substances. This led to Pakistani travelers to Iraq being held in captivity for the duration of their visit visas as the authorities couldn’t easily find a laboratory which could examine the confiscated substances. Reporting of these incidents in the Iraqi media had led to bad publicity for Pakistanis. ( Recently a Paki bikhari was caught "begging" on a flight from Karachi to Bangkok , according to social media !)

Minhaz Merchant: For Pakistan, terrorism is a state-sponsored business.

Some call it a “blood feud”. They are dead wrong. India and Pakistan are not caught in some existential Punjabiyat love-hate relationship. Pakistan is a state sponsor of terrorism. No other nation has used terror so ruthlessly as an instrument of state policy as Pakistan has done for decades — principally against India but also against Afghanistan.

For Rawalpindi terrorism, at its core, is a successful business model. The Pakistani army’s senior officers, retired and serving, own a third of the country’s land through benami entities. At one level, the army operates like a multinational corporation. It has a professional chain of command, discipline and frequent training exercises. At another level, it operates like a mafia, ordering assassinations of journalists and activists.

The Pakistani army’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) subverts, co-opts and kills with ruthless efficiency. It positions India as an enemy to justify the country’s bloated annual defence budget. Pakistan spends 3.6 per cent of its GDP on defence – twice India’s expenditure of 1.7 per cent of GDP. A large portion of the budget is siphoned off by the Pakistani army’s top brass and shared down the ranks in time-honoured style. This system of patronage ensures loyalty.

A small portion of Pakistan’s inflated $10 billion defence budget is earmarked for its outsourced terror wings: Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), Hizbul Mujahideen and other smaller outfits. Another slice is set aside for Hurriyat leaders in the Kashmir Valley who, after buying land with the money, pass on just enough to recruit young stone pelters.

The ISI knows the value of messaging. To maintain the fiction of Kashmir being the core issue between India and Pakistan, it recognises that terrorism must be accompanied by effective communication. The ISI has a well-trained cadre of people who use the media to spread lies about how the Indian Army has brutalised ordinary Kashmiris. They appear regularly on Indian TV debates, accompanied by retired Pakistani armed forces officers and relatively unknown Pakistani journalists. Reputed Pakistani editors like Najam Sethi, who are not ISI ventriloquists, are rarely fielded in these debates. They have independent views. The ISI shuns them. So inexplicably do most Indian TV channels. RU(ND)EE TV is ever ready to oblige

Indian channels instead provide oxygen to Pakistani non-entities who are briefed before each debate by their ISI handlers. Instead of inviting Afghan, Baloch and Bangladeshi journalists who can demolish the Pakistani army’s narrative, Indian channels allow themselves to become platforms for the ISI’s anti-Indian propaganda.

Money means everything to the Generals in Rawalpindi. They, however, go to great lengths to hide this sordid truth. They have ready sepoys in the form of a cabal of Indian journalists. The supply is plentiful, especially in Delhi. Some in the Indian media genuinely believe in the India-Pakistan “blood feud” myth. Others are simply vulnerable to the money on offer. Track-2 meetings are a special attraction for those seeking junkets abroad. These seminars are organised by obscure “peace” organisations but function under the watchful eyes of ISI handlers.

Pakistan is controlled by its army. Elections are a sideshow. The media is allowed some elbow room to propagate the fiction of press freedom in Pakistan but for all practical purposes it is closely monitored by the army. If a newspaper or TV channel crosses the boundary set by the army, it is clinically punished as Dawn, Pakistan’s most respected newspaper, and Hamid Mir of Geo TV discovered at different times for different reasons during the past year.

It is important in order for the Pakistani army’s business enterprise to succeed that terrorism against India flourishes and LoC ceasefire violations occur frequently. That keeps tensions at boiling point, the defence budget inflated and the Generals in Rawalpindi in good spirits. For them there is no better business than the business of proxy war. They know a real war with India would be ruinous for Pakistan. That is why they want terror and talks to go together. One keeps the fund pipeline open, the other gives Islamabad a semblance of international respectability by being hyphenated with India. India is Pakistan’s meal ticket and Kashmir the main course.

The last thing the Pakistani army wants is a final resolution to Kashmir. Take away the “dispute” and the army’s decades-long business model will collapse. Keep the pot boiling but never let it boil over (The Indian army can and should take steps to make this pot tumble and upset the whole equation). The more Indian journalists echo Pakistan’s “blood feud” theory, the more Islamabad justifies using the Kashmir Valley as a killing field to settle a “core dispute”.

Indian politicians have long fallen for the rakish charm of Pakistan’s crooked leaders. Indira Gandhi was blindsided by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto into returning 93,000 Pakistani PoWs after the Bangladesh war. Her father 24 years earlier had made the historical blunder of approaching the United Nations after the 1947-48 war in Kashmir. Every successive Indian prime minister has succumbed to Pakistan’s trickery. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Dr. Manmohan Singh and now Narendra Modi have each tried and failed to appease Pakistan with Insaniyat, Punjabiyat and offers of friendship.

Each failed to understand the Pakistani army’s mind: it wants trade and diplomatic engagement with India as part of a package deal that includes state-sponsored terrorism. Without that the Pakistani army’s lucrative business model would fall apart.

Arrey, Falijee, it's completely naarmal in Al Bakistan. Zardari sacrificed a black goat *every day* when he was in office to "ward off evil" and he is in the good books of deep state now. Recently, Pakis sacrificed a black goat for smooth running of PIA  It's not like deep state is comprised of rational Pakis who are put off by Imran Khan's superstitions.
