Pakistan’s Pivot to Asia
The Atlantic
Ben Judah

Nor did many pause over the fact that Khan won that election with the backing of an increasingly pro-Chinese military, or that he promised to pull Pakistan “out of the War on Terror,” or that he’s now presiding over a financial collapse.
where I traveled to interview the then-candidate Khan last October. Khan is much more than a celebrity clinging to his looks and lusting for power. He provides a glimpse into what the post-American world might look like: a chaotic stage where strongmen find themselves buffeted by Western, Arab, and Chinese forces.
Pakistani TV commercials feature friendly Chinese neighbors; pork, prohibited for sale under Pakistan’s Islamic-inspired law, is available in Chinese shops; enormous billboards announce construction sites for the “China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.” Pakistan is a centerpiece of Chinese foreign policy, at the heart of a projected $1 trillion worth of investments, loans, and infrastructure projects around the globe known as the “Belt and Road Initiative.”
You can see Arab globalization at work in Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport, where every day thousands of migrant workers take off for Dubai, Riyadh, and Abu Dhabi, and hundreds of imams and pilgrims unload from Saudi Arabia. Economic migrants and religious students not only bring back an Arabized Islam from the Gulf; they also make Islam’s ancient dream of the Ummah, the world commonwealth of believers, feel real through their mobility.
None of this is to suggest that Pakistan is a healthy country. A ramshackle and militarized state that has received 12 IMF bailouts since the late 1980s, it is surrounded by rising Asia but not part of it. At independence in 1947, it had higher living standards than China and India. Now it’s fallen far behind these two neighbors. Even Bangladesh has surpassed Pakistan in terms of both exports and life expectancy. And by some measures, Bangladesh has now overtaken Pakistan in GDP per capita as well.
“I’m probably the most famous Pakistani ever in its history,” was how Khan summed himself up to me last October. And that wasn’t an absurd boast. Americans can grasp Khan’s celebrity in Pakistan by imagining Donald Trump and Michael Jordan combined into one megastar.
Khan left Pakistan at 17 to play cricket and studied at Oxford University, then became captain of Pakistan’s national cricket team. When Khan returned home after winning the 1992 World Cup, the crowds were so huge it took hours for his car to get beyond the airport:
He toured Pakistan with his first wife, Jemima Goldsmith, the daughter of an Anglo-French Jewish billionaire, and twice hosted Princess Diana with public fanfare in Lahore.
These days, he does his utmost to disassociate himself from Europe and the United States. He told me that he has almost entirely given up Western dress.
Nevertheless, Khan remains deeply linked to the English-speaking world. He is the father of two British sons with his first wife and is an enthusiastic follower of British politics. When I asked Khan’s finance minister, Asad Umar, what had surprised him most about his leader as he got to know him, he said: “He’s incredibly English. I don’t know anyone else in Pakistan who will say ‘gosh.’ He’ll quote Shakespeare. He’s … very English.”
Just like populist firebrands in the West, Khan ran for prime minister furiously campaigning against the elite (although he is, of course, a member of the elite).
I stood behind Khan onstage at his rally in Mandi Bahauddin last October, so close I worried he might knock me over as he gesticulated furiously. “The Prophet Muhammad was a politician,” he told an audience of 20,000. But instead of dropping Quranic edicts, he promised “an Islamic welfare” like that available “in Britain and Scandinavia.” For his closing note, he said that under his leadership, Pakistan would rise like China. Khan thundered: “China has improved the living standards of 700 million people. We must work along those lines.”
Khan believed that the price Pakistan paid to be a “major non-NATO ally” in the War on Terror was too high. Direct lines to the U.S. president, scores of F-16s, and military-aid packages from the Pentagon were not worth what Khan called the “billions and billions of damage.”
The only solution in Afghanistan, he told me, was the one that formally acknowledged the end of American hegemony by bringing Washington’s rivals into the settlement. “Peace in Afghanistan will not come,” said Khan, “unless all the neighbors—Iran, Russia, China, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the United States—sit down at a table and come up with a negotiated settlement.”
India is not mentioned !
“He’s selling Pakistanis a dream,” said Umar, the finance minister, in the cool of his home in the elite neighborhood of Defense. “But he’s not a con man.” Khan, to him, was not an ideologue or a populist, but a genius at what Umar called “PR.”
That dream, quite clearly, is that Pakistan can join rising Asia—that it will come to resemble Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates, where many Pakistanis have worked, and from which they receive remittances. Seen from the slums of Karachi, “Saudia” is not a synonym for backwardness.
But Saudia is looked upon as a cash spigot !
Many business elites I spoke with had a political as well as economic enthusiasm for what they saw in China, Dubai, and Singapore: free-market authoritarianism.
Khan’s government sought a bailout from China last month. But Beijing only offered short-term financing. The rising power refused to play the role of lender of last resort, choosing instead to let its loans work as a debt trap. Khan flew to Saudi Arabia seeking a bailout there, but he returned empty-handed.
In more ways than one, Pakistan shows what geopolitics will look like after American hegemony. It will be an intensely fluid, messier world. Different political and economic models, not just Western ones, will appeal to elites. The U.S. and China will compete, and they will both wield enormous influence at once. Both Western and Chinese finance will be in play. There will be no simple power shift from one hegemon to another.
The new world of several great empires, with none dominant, might resemble the precolonial era more than the recent past. As we drove across the Punjab, Khan spoke extensively of his ancestors: the 16th-century Pashtun warrior princes who had ruled between Safavid Persia and the Mughal emperors, and who’d met Western merchants on the trade routes to Ming China. They, too, had lived in a polycentric age in which the West was one pole, but not supreme.

. . . his plan for Pakistan was hard to categorize between left and right: a religiously tinged promise . . .
Nothing hard to categorize. Everything is Islamic. From Iqbal, the poet, to Jinnah to Liaqat Ali Khan to ZAB, Benazir, Musharraf, Nawaz, to Zardari, everybody has dabbled with 'Islamic Welfare State'. Jinnah, with his zero knowledge or interest in Islam, used to claim that Islam was a third force sitting between Capitalism and Communism.

Rights minister Shireen Mazari orders probe into child maid torture
The News International
Oct 21, 2018
ISLAMABAD: While taking serious notice of an incident of domestic violence involving a young child, Federal Minister for Human Rights Dr. Shireen Mazari said the matter was being investigated.
“We are investigating the whole issue on a priority basis and FIR would be filed after the meticulous physical examination of the victim,” Ms  Mazari said.
“We are keeping a close eye to ensure justice for the little girl, since morning we are on it. We are also in process of drafting a comprehensive bill for protection of domestic workers including banning child workers,” she said.
“We will be following it to ensure FIR registration and further action,” she said.
Wonder, if her daughter who is safely ensconced in Geneva is also "blasting" the Deep State and the Paki Fauj with her "toxic tweets" and embarrassing her mom
Dr. Shireen Mazari said that a police team has also been sent to Sumandri area to bring the child and her parents back and ASI has been suspended for wrong investigation.
Scared of the Sifarish factor of the employer
The father of this child has initially denied of any kind of violence on his daughter. “We are investigation this issue on priority basis and soon the accused would be brought to the court of law,” she added.
Remains to be now seen who invokes a higher sifarish factor , the accused, through the fauj  or Jalebi

Top international cricketers involved in spot fixing: Al Jazeera
"Jholi ke andar kya hai, jholi ke andar?"

Image
A startling Al Jazeera report has revealed that 15 international cricket matches were alleged spot-fixed by players from England, Australia and Pakistan from 2011 to 2012.
The evidence, from 2011 and 2012, points to a small group of England players allegedly carrying out spot-fixes in seven matches; Australia players in five matches; Pakistan players in three, with players from other teams carrying out spot-fixes in one match. In some cases, both teams appear to have delivered a fix.

Abused Servant's Father Refuses To File Charges- Maybe Because Of The Sifarish Factor - Against "The Powerful Wife And Husband" Duo Who Physically Abused His Minor Daughter

Minor domestic worker allegedly tortured by army officer, husband at Rawalpindi residence
Dawn
Oct 21, 2018
A young girl hired as a domestic worker in Rawalpindi was allegedly tortured by her employers for over a year, it emerged on Saturday.
The case, a grim reminder of the infamous Tayyaba torture case of 2016, came to light through a series of videos shared on Twitter in which the child can be seen narrating her ordeal. The child named Kinza, an 11-year-old per her own estimate, says that she is employed as a domestic worker at the residence of Ammara Riaz, a major in the Pakistan Army, and her husband Mohsin Riaz, who is a doctor by profession. The house is located in Wilayat Colony, Scheme III, Chaklala.
No caste or class system in Malsi
The girl, who managed to escape the house, accuses her employers of starving her and torturing her with wires, belts and ropes for over a year. She further says she is kicked and stomped on while she sleeps. When asked by the videographer to describe how she has been mistreated, she explains that she is not fed properly by the family she lives with, and when she steals food out of hunger, she is administered inhumane beatings.
If so called "educated" couple behave in this way, what could someone expected of an unwashed Abdul !
In the video, Kinza shows injuries that she has sustained, including her bloodshot, black eyes as well as multiple wound marks on her arms, neck and head.Minister for Human Rights Dr Shireen Mazari took notice of the case and said the ministry is "keeping a close eye [on the matter] to ensure justice for the little girl".
Too early to pass judgement. Give Jalebi a chance . It will now become a case of who has higher sifarish . Jalebi or the powerful couple ( who may be son, daughter, uncle, aunt, brother , sister , cousin, etc etc of some powerful jairnal, minister etc etc )
According to a report submitted to the ministry by Rawalpindi City Police Officer (CPO) Abbas Ahsan, the incident came to the Airport police station's knowledge on Friday. As per the report, the torture of the child was first reported to Rescue 15 by a resident of Wilayat Colony, named Colonel Sajjad.
A "honest" fauji
Col Sajjad informed Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sajjad Hussain, who was sent to investigate the matter, that Kinza used to live at the house of his neighbour Dr Mohsin and had now come to their (Sajjad's) home. Col Sajjad then called up Kinza's father, Mohammad Shabbir, and asked him to reach his house. After reaching Col Sajjad's house on Saturday, Shabbir gave a written statement to police saying he had left his daughter at Dr Mohsin's residence "to study" and that he was now taking his daughter back home to Samundri in Faisalabad, where she will continue her studies.
The "poor" father trusted the couple . And the couple abused his trust, simple as that !
CPO Ahsan told DawnNewsTV that the girl's father refused to press charges and took her back with him to Samundri. The ASI returned and did not file a report, due to which he was suspended.
Again the presence of the sifarish factor
Shireen Mazari also shared the affidavit submitted by Kinza's father, in which he absolves her employers of any sort of violence and says the child had been injured when "she was climbing the gate in an effort to escape". He also says that his daughter had attempted to escape her employers' house twice in the past as well.
The "poor" father dare not "go against" the powerful couple
CPO Ahsan said a team of officers had been dispatched to Samundri to bring back Kinza and her father upon which a full investigation will be launched. He said that a medical exam will be conducted to ascertain the extent of the girl's injuries and a probe conducted against the employers.
The army has also been contacted and informed about the allegations against Major Ammara, revealed CPO Ahsan, explaining that the police cannot take any direct action against a serving army officer.
This does not happen in "normal" countries. But Pakistan is NOT normal in that respect
Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner Dr Umar Jahangir was contacted for a response, but could not be reached.
Case appears to be a "hot potato"! . Handle with care ! Heads may roll !

Another Example Of A Powerful Ayesha "Exercising Her Authority" Because Her Hubby Is A Doctor In The Paki Fauj

Islamabad woman arrested for allegedly abusing, threatening police officials in viral video
Dawn
Oct 21, 2018
A woman in Islamabad was arrested on Sunday for allegedly abusing, threatening and misbehaving with police officials at an entry point to the Diplomatic Enclave after her vehicle, which was missing a number plate, was stopped by police.
The incident came to the notice of law enforcement and government officials after a video of the back-and-forth between the woman and police officers went viral on social media on Saturday.
The viral video showed the woman furiously yelling, using abusive language and hurling threats at police officials who had stopped her at the checkpoint because her car did not have a number plate.
She repeatedly asked the police to provide a "genuine reason" as to why she had been stopped, and even pressured the police officers to permit the vehicle to enter the Diplomatic Enclave, a highly sensitive and secure location in Islamabad, where government buildings, foreign missions and offices are located.
How can the police "do their job" if they cannot charge "violators"
A case was subsequently registered against the woman at the Secretariat Police Station under Sections 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation).
She was arrested from a local housing society today and shifted to a police station for women. She was later sent to jail on judicial remand.
According to police officials, she is a doctor by profession and her husband serves in the Pakistan Army's medical corps.
Police said the woman then lost her temper and began threatening the officials with dire consequences and using foul language.
The sifarish factor at play here !
Minister of State for Interior Shehryar Afridi also took notice of the woman's behaviour with police officials and reminded citizens that no one is above the law. He directed officials to take action as per the law and asked police to submit a report on the matter.
Let us see who "wins" in this case, and justice will indeed be done, and the woman punished under the law

Can The "Lazy" Saudis Be Depended Upon To Deliver On Their Promised Moolah To Pakiland

Pakistan trying to enlist Saudi support instead of IMF bailout
Oct 21, 2018
ISLAMABAD – The spokesperson of the government on economy and energy issues, Dr Farrukh Saleem has said that the government was doing its best to avoid going to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and instead reaching out to Saudi Arabia, China and other Gulf countries to increase its forex reserves.
The fact that the Finance Minister is pursuing a parallel track with the IMF suggests that the Saudi are playing their usual game and not giving a straight yes or no answer
In an interview to a private television channel, the spokesperson said Prime Minister Imran Khan’ s visit to Saudi Arabia was a positive step in the right direction and it would be highly beneficial for our national and economic interests.
But nothing concrete ever came out of that trip apart from some "general promise" to provide concessional oil .
Disclosing that PM Imran will visit Riyadh on October 23 on the special invitation of Saudi King Salman to participate in the three-day ‘Future Investment Initiative’ conference, Saleem underscored that reaching out to friendly countries for the assistance might be a better option than resorting to the IMF.
Whether they will take prompt action to actual transfer the funds before a certain date is an entire different matter
The analysts stressed that the PM’s visit would be very productive and in the best interest of the country and no one should make an issue out of it.Pakistan desired peaceful ties with all its neighbouring countries, however, these ties must be based on mutual respect and equality, he observed.
A dig at India
The economic expert said the incumbent regime was trying to open other avenues so that both countries can have closer ties, increase economic cooperation and have Saudi companies invest in Pakistan.
The spokesperson said that Pakistan enjoyed a special status in the Muslim world and it was pleasing that the holy kingdom would further develop its relationship with it during the tenure of the new Pakistani government.
Am pretty sure that the Saudis will appreciate Immy's presence next week in Riyadh ( the meet is being boycotted by many western companies !) and throw some "crumbs" to beggar Pakistan

As The Economy Is Tanking Due To The Uncertainty Factor, Immy Is Courting The Media Owners And Trying To Convince Them That Good News From "Friendly Countries" Is On The Way . A Reasonably Objective Article By Arif Nizami .

Economy Blues
Pakistan Today
Arif Nizami
Prime Minister Imran Khan is perhaps making a somewhat desperate last minute attempt to escape the gauntlet of the IMF (International Monetary Fund). In his interaction with media owners the other day, discussion was mainly focused on problems faced by the print and electronic media. However he suddenly sprung a surprise by bowling a googlie from nowhere, revealing that we may not need an IMF bailout after all.
Obviously if the prime minister has decided to attend an investment moot whose invitees in the first place are mostly at the level of heads of IFIs (international finance institutions), business and finance leaders and finance ministers, there must be a cogent reason behind it.He must have been assured that like in the past, Riyadh is willing to park some of its money in Pakistan’s State Bank to shore up Islamabad’s empty coffers.
Certainly there is a change of heart somewhere, in Islamabad’s stance or that of Riyadh.
Nonetheless the prime minister assured the media that he believed in a free and unshackled press, adding that how could he not: the PTI government was elected thanks to the support of the media.
Pakistan is not the safest of places for journalists. Some of the difficulties being faced by media houses in terms of their distribution being stopped in DHA...
The Khan also quite candidly stated that the hay days of unfettered government advertisements to build a personality cult of those in power would never ever return. Certainly the old media in Pakistan will have to reinvent itself under the fast changing environment.

PM fears bankruptcy sans bailout in two months - News Desk / Rehman Azhar

ISLAMABAD: As the opposition’s outcry over the government’s decision to approach the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a financial bailout rises to a crescendo, Prime Minister Imran Khan has said Pakistan might have to file for bankruptcy if money does not come through in the next two months.

“An IMF loan was never a priority for us, but we have no other option but to approach the global lender, PM Imran told a select group of television anchorpersons at his Bani Gala residence on Saturday.

The government would not require any more loans after the IMF bailout package, said the PM, who had been a staunch critic of IMF loans.

Seeking to defend his administration’s decision to approach the global lender, he said, “There is no harm in borrowing money from the IMF – the problem arises when we give in to their conditions. Time will prove that our step [to approach the IMF] was a temporary arrangement.”

PM Imran invites Qatari investment in Pakistan Immy the Dimmy will DEMAND THE SAME BENEFITS AS WERE DOLED OUT TO NAWAZ!

When quizzed about the government outreach to friendly countries for financial assistance, the PM said, “We are engaged [in negotiations] with our friendly countries, China and Saudi Arabia in particular, and we hope for a positive development soon.”

Prime Minister Imran will leave for Saudi Arabia on Tuesday for a two-day business conference in Riyadh. At the conference ‘Future Investment Initiative’ to be held from October 23 to 25, Imran would try to project Pakistan’s economic and investment potential.

On Friday, the premier had a meeting with Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammad bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani, who also holds the portfolio of foreign minister, in Islamabad. Imran voiced hope that Doha would expedite implementation on its decision to employ 100,000 workers from Pakistan.

In his meeting with anchorpersons, the prime minister said the top bureaucracy and police were creating hurdles for his government at the administrative level.

“They [bureaucracy and police] are loyal to previous governments and are being run through a remote control against us,” he said. “Our government is still young while the people in bureaucracy and police have been there for long.”

The prime minister revealed that he was being pressured to make peace with the opposition. “They say that everything will be OK if I make peace with the opposition,” he said. “Opposition parties have connived since day one to put the PTI government under pressure.”

However, the premier reiterated that no one would escape accountability and that everyone would be held accountable for their financial wrongdoings. “Nobody would be offered any NRO,” he said, referring to the National Reconciliation Ordinance – a law introduced by former military dictator Pervez Musharraf allegedly to offer immunity to politicians against their financial wrongdoings.

Imran has not lost hope on Saudi aid

Referring to a recent fiery speech of Opposition Leader Shehbaz Sharif, who is facing corruption cases in accountability courts, the prime minister said, “Shehbaz Sharif was trying to become Nelson Mandela in the National Assembly.” He added that corruption cases against Shehbaz were not filed by the PTI government.

“NAB is an independent institution. The government has not intervened in the investigations of NAB,” he said, adding that all the cases against the Sharifs had been framed during the tenure of the previous government.

The PM said that he had come to power after a 22-year-long struggle and that he could tolerate criticism. He also admitted that his party could not properly convey the government policies to the people.

Pakistani Muslims Having Uighur Wives Feel The "Heat" From Tallel Than Mountain Fliend

Pakistani businessmen demand release of wives trapped in China
Financial Times- Emily Feng and Lucy Hornby in Beijing
September 26, 2018
A group of Pakistani businessmen have travelled to Beijing to petition for the release of their Chinese wives and children who were caught up in a sweeping detention campaign in Xinjiang.
The rare act of protest demonstrates how China’s security crackdown on the Uighur people, an ethnic group that traditionally practises Sufi Islam, could strain its relationship with an important ally in the Muslim world.
This discriminatory treatment accorded to the Uighur wives of the Paki businessman show that the Cheenis are leery of the "Islamic influence" of the hubby. No one as yet-even from the Paki Establishment - has come out in support of detained Ayeshas of Uighur origin, except the "brave" Jahil- Ham-Eid who has blasted the Chini Govt with his "poisonous tweets"
On the other hand, strange as it may seem, the Paki Govt and the Paki Awaam also are throwing their support 400% in support of "CPEC marriages", where the female Chini belongs to the majority " Hans" class and the spouse is a local Paki

PEREGRINE - JI :
Re the above, IMO, the powers to be ( could be Saudia, Cheen, Massa ) will not allow Pakiland to "go under" (ie bankrupt- Venezuela or Zimbabwe style ! ) . Too much is at stake here, foremost being the fate of the Bum, falling into "wrong hands" and the general turmoil in a country with so so many, guns . And hot headed Mullahs. And now an additional problem - no water to drink ! So Pakiland will continue existing like this . Until a Khomeni Style Revolution, with the aid of a junior style afsar of the fauj takes place there . Then there is going to a mass exodus, like in Iran . And the fallout may even spill into India. !

The Chinese Are Quietly Constructing Two Nuclear Plants- under CPEC - 25 Miles West Of Karachi To Address Chronic Power Shortage In Karachi. The Terms Of The Deal Are Not Clear

China is racing to complete 2 nuclear plants to ease Karachi’s power shortage
The Print
Col. Vinayak Bhat (retd)
Oct 16, 2018
POSTED IN FULL
New Delhi: The nuclear power plants Pakistan is building with Chinese assistance near its commercial capital city of Karachi are making fast progress. The plants are part of power-strapped Pakistan’s plans to tap nuclear energy to address its energy crisis while also reducing its dependence on conventional, non-renewable sources such as oil and coal. They are scheduled for completion in 2021 and 2022. Pakistan currently generates only 5 per cent of its total power from nuclear sources, with oil, coal and hydro accounting for the rest.
Pakistan’s power crisis has made headlines for years, with hours-long load-shedding (power cuts to satisfy a supply shortfall) a common phenomenon in the country, especially during the punishing south Asian summer.
One of its more desperate measures to address the crisis saw the Pakistan government contract a floating power plant, Kaya Bey, from a Turkish company for five years in 2009. However, the efforts failed, and, a year into operations, the Supreme Court cancelled the contract. The case was eventually taken to an arbitration court from the Turkish side.
Pakistan has a habit of reneging or cancelling international contracts , which it does not "like", or were made on unfavourable terms, or want to give to China. The Reko Diq Gold Mine deal is also under international litigation as the contract was cancelled and handed to the Chinis
Close ally China stepped in five years ago, in 2013, just as President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) began to take shape.Beijing made Islamabad an undeniable offer of two power reactors named Hualong-1, a Chinese pressurised water nuclear reactor developed by the China General Nuclear Power Group (CGNPG) and the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) based on a French design, ACP-1000.
The reactors were for the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant-2 and 3 (KANUPP-2 & KANUPP-3). Pakistan is planning to acquire another Hualong-1 reactor for the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant-5 (CHASNUPP-5).
Under the deal, 86 per cent of the construction cost was to be borne by the vendor, though the options to recover this loan, amounting to nearly $10 billion, are not known publicly.
One of the "secret deals" that is on the radar of IMF
The construction of the two power plants began in 2013, about 25 km west of Karachi at Paradise Point, at the same site as KANUPP-1, which was inaugurated in 1972.
The plant is technically in Balochi territory , where the locals are fighting the Paki State !
According to satellite images of the two new plants, their construction appears to extend 50-60 metres into the ground. This suggests the possibility that almost the entire facility may go underground after construction. The design of partially embedded plants allows the use of waste heat generated during the process.Although the separation of various divisions of the two plants looks good, the distance between different facilities within each plant may not be sufficient, which could make it difficult to control a fire.
Even Paki Nuclear scientist Pervez Hoodbhoy has expressed safety concerns regarding this project, which is so close to the mega city of Karachi !
Ease of access has been catered to through shafts and tunnels. The main entry portal has four tunnel entries that are five metres wide — two each for the two plants. Ventilation ducts for environmental control systems have been seen at many places along the tunnels as well as at other places. There are also ducts to connect different divisions within and outside the plants. A few other openings possibly provide for escape during emergencies. At the current stage of construction, it looks like the container dome may remain overground, providing ease of access for fuel for the reactor.
The active cooling systems for both plants are conjoined and possibly have six large fans, three each for the two plants.A waste treatment and disposal area is under construction, which will possibly take treated waste water directly to the sea with two proper breakwaters constructed specially for the plants. The water exit may not be visible once the plants are operational since it is likely to be connected underwater.
The administrative area has been constructed west and northwest of the plants, and also caters to the residential complex. There is a Chinese colony of almost 70 barracks north of the construction site, which indicates that most of the workers and engineers at the two plants are from China.
One more further step forward to the Chinification of Pakistan
Two large buildings have been constructed to the southeast of the plants, which could possibly be either for the Karachi Institute of Power Engineering (KINPOE) to be shifted here, or a guest house.KINPOE is affiliated to the Pakistan Institute of Engineering & Applied Sciences (PIEAS) and offers a master’s degree in nuclear and power engineering. The last admission test for KINPOE graduate courses was held on 7 October.
Once this is all complete, Pakistan may offer seats to "friendly Ummah nations students" to further burnish/ salvage their image in the world
The idea to build underground nuclear plants is basically meant to mitigate damage in the event of disasters. However, the plants have been set up in an area that is extremely prone to seismic disturbances, as Karachi is located on the cusp of three tectonic plates, the Arabia plate, the Eurasia plate and the India plate.
During an earthquake or, worse, a tsunami, buried structures bear the brunt of the tremors. Any such disaster in Karachi could thus put the safety of the entire city of Karachi and surrounding areas at risk. The wind corridor in this area runs from Karachi to Hyderabad (Pakistan), with the wind flowing towards the northwest for the better part of the year. Thus in the event of a radiation leak, however unlikely, the entire wind corridor will be adversely effected.Safety mechanisms for such structures should cater to additional protection for the population in nearby areas.
The Pakis will look to the Chinis for this !
Controlling fire and radiation leaks is generally achieved by automatic systems that shut down different parts of the facility in the event of an accident, blocking the escape of people working in those parts entirely. This design and siting of the two nuclear power plants only provides safety against the even more unlikely event of an air crash or sabotage through aircraft. There are already many public interest litigations about the safety aspect of these plants in Karachi courts.
Safety is not the first concern is such matters . Not sure if the Plants fall under International Atomic Energy Agency and the reprocessed fuel will not be used for "tactical" nuclear weapons .

Balochi Children Will Be Forced To "Swallow Chinese" In School ! Gwadar Is Going To Be A Hub For Chini Nationals In Pakiland !

Baloch children don’t learn Balochi in schools, but set to be taught Chinese
Economic Times
Oct 4, 2018
NEW DELHI: Schoolchildren in Balochistan’s port city of Gwadar will now be taught Chinese language till class VI, a decision that signals further Sinification ( or Chinification!) of Pakistan in the years ahead.
Close on the heels of the decision to create a gated Chinese township in Gwadar, the entry point of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPECNSE 0.00 %), Balochistan’s newly elected chief minister, Jam Kamal, has ordered authorities to immediately start teaching Chinese language to schoolchildren in Gwadar, ET has learnt.
.
Chinese language could even be made a compulsory subject in schools in Gwadar infuture, according to people aware of the matter. This is the case even as Balochi language, the mother tongue of most of the students in Balochistan, is not taught in local schools.
Learning of local languages, even Sindhi, Panjabi ,is "discouraged" ." Erdu" is replacing the local lingo !
The decision to teach Chinese language comes at a time when Chinese influence in the region is increasing. Baloch political groups allege that Chinese influx, due to construction of infrastructure projects under the Chinese funded multi-billion dollar CPEC, would result in a demographic shift and turn Balochs into a minority in their own land.
ET was the first to report that China was building a city for 5,00,000 Chinese nationals at a cost of $150 million in Gwadar as part of the CPEC. China-Pak Investment Corporation bought the 3.6 million square foot International Port City for the purpose. By 2022, the proposedcityisenvisagedtohousehalfmillion Chinese citizens, comprising the workforce for the proposed financial district. It would be the first such Chinese city in South Asia, although China has such complexes or subcities ..
There were other reports which suggested that the brand new Gwadar city for the Cheenis will be an all "Hans affair", a gated community with Chini security personnel brought in to keep the locals out . Some sort of a Chinese city within the larger city of Gwadar !

The Immy Govt Smells A Rat In The CPEC Deals With "Ilon Fliend" , China
South China Morning Post
Adnan Aamir
Oct 19, 2018
In April 2015, Pakistan, led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, signed agreements aimed at establishing a China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The collection of infrastructure projects, the flagship of China’s global Belt and Road Initiative, was called a “game changer” for Pakistan. Some 3½ years on, however, a new government in Pakistan, led by Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf party, is taking steps to scale it back.
During the tenure of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, criticising the economic corridor project was almost akin to criticising Pakistan itself. Now, members of the new cabinet are openly critical of the huge project.
Imran Khan, thy name is a U Turn
Abdul Razak Dawood, a scion of a business family and the minister for commerce and industry, ( he is an Advisor not a Minister !) told the Financial Times that the new government would review all CPEC projects. He said that the agreements were unfair to Pakistani companies and should be put on hold for a year, so they could be revised if necessary.
The move and Dawood’s comments echo the growing resentment against CPEC in Pakistani power circles, although Dawood later said his quotes had been taken out of context. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi also met his Pakistani counterpart, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, in New York and maintained that “China and Pakistan are all-weather strategic partners”.
Dawood is right when he said that the Chinese do not patronize local industry ( ...even chairs and tables are imported from China !)
However, the Pakistani government has gone on to suspend 455 development projects, some of which are part of CPEC, on the flimsy pretext of austerity. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor is a US$62 billion collection of projects funded by Beijing. How could Pakistan achieve its goal of reducing public expenditure by suspending Chinese-funded projects? More likely, it is a way to scale down CPEC without raising the ire of its all-weather friend.
In another unexpected move, Pakistan invited Saudi Arabia to become part of the CPEC programme and to develop a massive refinery complex near the Chinese-funded Gwadar port. Tellingly, Khan chose Saudi Arabia, not China, as the first country to visit after taking office. Later, Pakistan said Saudi Arabia would not become a “collateral strategic partner” in the CPEC programme, but its intention to dilute the influence of China is unmistakable.
The Chinese were kept in the dark about this "offer" to join CPEC and were taken by surprise . The Pakis have now "withdrawn" the offer to S.A. to " join" CPEC
Why is Khan’s government intent on scaling down CPEC and China’s influence? One aforementioned reason is the growing feeling among the decision-making elite in Pakistan that the agreements are unfair. Such concerns have been raised over the past three years, but the new government is taking them seriously.
According to the few financial details of CPEC that are available, Pakistan is not benefiting significantly from the programme. Reportedly, although China has lent Pakistan US$26 billion-US$30 billion for power and transport projects that are part of the economic corridor, not a single dollar has entered Pakistani banking channels.Instead, Chinese banks give the loans to Chinese companies, which buy equipment in China and use it in Pakistan. Consequently, instead of gaining economic benefits, Pakistan is running up huge debts and risking fiscal default.
This is all true plus the fact that the Chinese are flooding the Paki market with cheap and shoddy consumables , and the Paki manufacturing industry is now complaining !
The new government has another reason to roll back CPEC: namely, this is not its baby. Rather, it was a project started under the old government, which got a lot of political mileage from it. Politically, it makes no sense for the current administration to actively pursue its predecessor's project.Meanwhile, Pakistan’s foreign reserves are dwindling and it has asked the International Monetary Fund for help, after neither China nor Saudi Arabia gave it financial help. Pakistan is hoping for up to US$15 billion in IMF loans, but faces another CPEC-related problem.
The IMF says it requires “absolute transparency” about Pakistan’s Chinese loans before it bails the country out. Yet the financial details of CPEC were closely guarded secrets under the previous government. If the current government makes the details public, the programme is likely to come under more fire in Pakistan.
The direction of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor will become clearer once Khan visits China in the first week of November. If Beijing manages to earn Khan’s full support, he may stop scaling down the project. However, given the developments of the past few months – from China’s lack of interest in bailing out Pakistan to allegations of unfairness – there is unlikely to be any change in government thinking.
The Chinese have accorded Immy the treatment of an Honored Guest, when he visits Shanghai this week . But these are just "empty gestures really

And now this.

Anti-measles team attacked in Muzaffargarh
An anti-measles team was allegedly attacked by a family for conducting an “anti-Islam” activity in Shah Jamal area of Muzaffargarh district, police said Sunday.
When the team reached the house of Abdur Rehman to administer anti-measles vaccine, he started beating them and threw their kit. “They also torn my clothes, kicked lady health workers out of his house and accused us of promoting anti-Islam activities,” Riyaz said.
Abdur Rehman said that the vaccination was made by non-Muslims and thus it was haram (forbidden). He termed it a conspiracy against Muslims.
In another incident in Muzaffargarh district, lady health worker Naseem Bibi accused her colleague Fiyyaz of sexual harassment in workplace (which is not unijlamic)
Not just polio vaccines, but measles vaccines are haram.

Pakistan needs to go for high value-added export basket - Hussain Zaidi

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s terms of trade, which measure the ratio of export to import prices, have not only been adverse, but have also deteriorated over the years, which has adversely impacted the economy in terms of growth and balance of payments.

If an economy’s terms of trade are less than 100%, they are regarded as adverse. This signifies that capital inflows into the economy in the form of export receipts are less than capital outflows in the form of import payments.

In the case of Pakistan, like most other non-oil exporting developing countries, both trade balance and terms of trade have remained adverse, which shows that not only we import more than we export, but on balance our exports are much cheaper than imports.

Gwadar will soon be the centre of global trade

This is hardly surprising, because Pakistan is essentially an exporter of primary products, such as rice, and low-technology goods, which are derived from products such as textile and leather articles. On the other hand, our imports comprise largely fuels, such as crude oil, consumer products, and capital goods and machinery.

Prices of non-oil primary products are generally much lower and prices of low-technology goods are less than those of machinery and equipment (the high and medium-technology products).

Pakistan’s terms of trade problem is compounded by the fact that commodity-based products that it exports are also low-priced because they have low value addition and technology content, lack product upgrade and sophistication, are labour-intensive (unskilled) and are sold to the low end of the market.

In the case of developing countries, which depend on non-oil primary products for export earnings, the terms of trade tend to deteriorate over time. In the last one decade from fiscal year 2008 to 2017 – full-year data for FY18 is not yet available, Pakistan recorded the overall annual average terms of trade of 55.82%. However, in the preceding decade (FY1998-2007), the average terms of trade were 88.26%, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

The data shows a sharp deterioration in the terms of trade over the years. In FY17, Pakistan’s terms of trade stood at 57.17%, which suggests that Pakistan’s average export prices are nearly half the import prices. When a country faces a gap so large between its export and import prices, the only way it can avoid a substantial trade deficit is to drastically increase the quantity of exports.

However, this requires a large exportable surplus, which Pakistan does not have. Besides, an increase in export supplies tends to depress their prices. Hence, it has not been possible for Pakistan to compensate for low export prices by increasing export supplies.

On a disaggregate level, it is only in the primary sectors, such as food and fuels, that Pakistan’s terms of trade have been mostly more than 100% each. In the value-added sector, notably manufactures, and machinery and transport equipment, the terms of trade have been mostly adverse.

The fact that Pakistan has had favourable terms in case of primary products and adverse terms in case of value-added products seems to be a paradox. It only shows that primary products Pakistan exports on average carry a higher price than primary products it imports.

Conversely, chemicals, manufactured goods and capital and transport equipment that Pakistan imports on average carry a much higher price than that for the products of the same categories it exports.

Better trade terms

Favourable or improved terms of trade enable a country to buy a larger quantity of goods in exchange for a smaller quantity of exports. Since exports raise prices in the domestic market due to reduced supply of goods, they reduce consumer welfare and enhance producer welfare.

On the other hand, imports increase consumer welfare and reduce producer welfare. A country’s overall welfare is a function of both consumer and producer welfare.

The favourable terms of trade, which allow a country to earn high export revenues by selling a smaller quantity of products to foreigners, thus increase overall welfare in an economy. The exchange of relatively small quantities of exports for relatively large quantities of imports also allows a country to raise the living standards of the people.

The terms of trade also bear upon economic growth and development. Being a developing country, Pakistan needs to import machinery, equipment and intermediate goods in sufficient quantities to maintain the growth momentum. Oil and other petroleum products are necessary to keep the wheels of the economy moving.

Pakistan, Egypt agree to promote trade, economic cooperation

Since exports are the principal source of earning foreign exchange, adverse terms of trade have constrained the ability to import industrial goods and raw material in sufficient quantities, which have slowed down the growth momentum.

A high trade deficit, which is underpinned by both high import prices relative to export prices and import quantities, is politically disturbing for the government, which is forced to adopt measures such as regulatory duties and restricting imports including those which are needed by the domestic industry. At any rate, the increase in import prices hits the consumer hard.

Besides, export revenue is an important source of savings. When businesses earn low revenue per unit of exports, they are deficient in the funds required for capital formation, which discourages private-sector investment. Adverse terms of trade may also cause balance of payments problems.

Countries, which rely on primary products for exports or otherwise have a high export concentration ratio, are especially vulnerable to terms of trade-induced balance of payments shocks.

In the case of Pakistan, a fall in world commodity prices often worsens the terms of trade and exacerbates the trade imbalance, thus leading to balance of payments problems. In order to improve the terms, the country needs to move towards a high value-added and rich technology content export basket. Such as Export of Terrorism in which Terroristan is World Famous!

As The Attached Farticle Clearly Shows That The Pakis Are Laying Down The Red Carpet For The "Hungry Chinese" Who Are Salivating At The Prospect Of Exploiting Pakiland's So Called Natural Resources !

Pakistani Mining Sector Holds Opportunities for Chinese Companies
Jumore JumoreGlobal Insights
Oct 22, 2018
A developing country with agriculture as its pillar industry, Pakistan is also bestowed with a variety of natural minerals, including copper, gold, iron, coal and etc., with reserves of copper and gold ranking world top 10. Coal reserves are even huge enough to meet the demand of total traditional energy of this country for the next two centuries.Though it has mineral reserves in abundance, Pakistan hasn’t fully exploited the mining industry. This is partly due to the fact that mines are mostly located in remote regions like Balochistan, FATA, Gilgit Baltistan, where infrastructure have difficulties accessing. The government now is paying more attention to this industry and would take measures to further its development. As China’s all-weather friend, Pakistan encourages Chinese companies to invest in its mining sector, especially under the drive by the The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which is a 3,000-kilometer network of roads, railways and pipelines to transport oil and gas from southern Pakistan’s Gwadar Port to Kashgar city, northwestern China’s Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, working as a bridge for the new Maritime Silk Route.
Like the British, the Chinese are going to exploit the natural wealth of Pakiland for their own industry and leave Pakistan in an more exposed bhooka nanga state than what it is right now.
The "shrewd" Chinese are, even now as this is written, are fishing out the shrimp, oysters, sea urchins and other fish life out of Gwadar and surrounding waters !
Even Donkey population of Pakistan is not being spared !!! They are being exported to China, their skins are harvested and their reproductive organs are "manufactured" into Donkey Chow Mein and then re-exported back to Pakiland for the consumption of the Hans in Gwadar . ARY News
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday told a delegation of senior journalists that someone approached him and offered money for “relief” from accountability process, ARY News reported.Talking to a group of senior journalists, the PM said that the government has strong evidence to maintain that the country was looted by past rulers and their cronies and none will be spared in the transparent accountability process supported by the federal government.Sources said PM claimed that he was approached and offered money to allow someone to evade the accountability process but he declined to give any leeway to such criminals.
Was it Ganja? Was it Dus Percenti? The Paki journos needs to know. Or is the Kaptaan BS ing as usual  See Below Now ![*]
The prime minister, however, made it clear that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) was an independent institution and his government had no direct links to it, adding that corruption cases against the opposition leaders were not initiated during his tenure.
He also criticised the opposition for “uniting for a common cause like corruption” and in order to “save their ill-gotten wealth”.The PM also lashed out at Shehbaz Sharif for “acting like Nelson Mandela” despite facing a corruption inquiry. IMO, he has now "over used" this !
In a separate meeting held with party leaders and minister, the PM announced that he will announce a poverty alleviation program next week.
Even if the Saudis do not "cough up" $ 30-35 Billion
