Pakistan ex-PM Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam arrested in Lahore

Pakistan opposition leader and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz was arrested on Thursday by the country’s National Accountability Bureau (NAB), a spokeswoman for her party said.

“Maryam Nawaz has been arrested,” Marriyum Aurangzeb, a spokeswoman for Nawaz’s Pakistan Muslim League (N) party said. “NAB arrested her from Lahore and we haven’t been given any reason or grounds for her arrest”.

She was earlier summoned by NAB to submit details in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case, Pakistan media reported.

Taliban rejects linking ofAfghanistan issue with J&K Indrani Bagchi – TNN

HIGHLIGHTS

- The Taliban have opposed linking Kashmir with Afghanistan, a staple tool in Pakistan’s diplomatic talking points.

- Pakistan sees its assistance with the peace process in Afghanistan as a lever to get the US to push India for a Kashmir settlement

In what would certainly be described as a snub to Pakistan, the Taliban have opposed linking Kashmir with Afghanistan, a staple tool in Pakistan’s diplomatic talking points.

Expressing “deep sadness” at what they described as a “crisis” in J&K, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said: “Linking the issue of Kashmir with that of Afghanistan by some parties will not aid in improving the crisis at hand because the issue of Afghanistan is not related nor should Afghanistan be turned into the theatre of competition between other countries.”

Pakistan sees its assistance with the peace process in Afghanistan as a lever to get the US to push India for a Kashmir settlement. The Taliban count Pakistan as one of their premier patrons, including giving sanctuary, training and funding to their fighters and leaders over the years. It is Pakistan’s close ties with the Taliban that has given Islamabad space in the peace process.

By changing the status of J&K into a union territory, India has taken that off the table. Pakistan in the past few days has threatened to torpedo the Afghan peace talks as a pressure tactic on the US. The Taliban statement, which appears to have been “influenced” by the US, robs Pakistan of that plank.

The Taliban statement was preceded by a similar one from former Afghan president Hamid Karzai. Tweeting, Karzai said, “Comments in Pakistan linking peace in Afghanistan to their objectives in Kashmir are indicative of Pakistan viewing Afghanistan as strategic depth. I call on Pakistan govt to stop using extremist violence as instrument of policy in the region. We hope the new measures by govt of India will lead to the betterment and prosperity of people in J&K as the citizens of India.”

The Taliban statement is almost statesmanlike, despite its unhappy tone. They have carefully refrained from criticising India, instead focusing on the “difficulties and hardships of Muslims of Kashmir.” The mildly worded statement also keeps a path open for engagement with India. As the US prepare to leave, India is also debating about how to engage the Taliban which will certainly become a dominant political force in Afghanistan.

In Video : Taliban slams Pakistan for linking Afghanistan with the Kashmir issue

Comments : LONG SHOT - May be the Taliban wants India not to oppose the Talibanization of Afghanistan AND wants the option to get Indian and United States Aid via Chah Bahar.

Indian Navy puts all bases, warships on vigil as seaborne terror threat looms
"We are on a state of heightened alert on the eastern and western seaboards," media reports cited an unnamed official as saying.
Amal Rasheedali Aug 9, 2019.
The Indian Navy has put all its bases and warships on high alert to counter a possible terror strike after the central government revoked Article 370 and split Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories. The possibility for terror attacks through the eastern and western fronts have escalated, officials have said. "We are on a state of heightened alert on the eastern and western seaboards," the Hindustan Times cited an unnamed official as saying.
The Pakistan government had expressed strong protest against the move and expelled the Indian envoy. Pakistan also suspended trade and halted rail transport across the border.
The high alert comes even as India is preparing to celebrate its 73rd Independence Day on August 15. The security agencies also fear a possible Pulwama-like terror attack to coincide with the Independence Day celebrations. The Indian Army has deployed many troops in J&K in case of any misadventures from Pakistan. "Lately Pakistan has been openly threatening about certain incidents in Kashmir. Notwithstanding we'll take care of all of them; let anyone come & try & disrupt the peace in valley, we will have him eliminated!" Lt General KJS Dhillon said in a video posted by Chinar Corps on Twitter.

Pakistan rules out military option over Kashmir dispute - Kamran Yousaf

VIDEO

ISLAMABAD: A day after Pakistan downgraded diplomatic ties and suspended bilateral trade with India, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Thursday dismissed suggestions that Islamabad was looking for a military option in the wake of India’s illegal annexation of occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Qureshi; however, told reporters that Pakistan fully reserved the right to respond if India resorted to any “misadventure”.

His statement came against the backdrop of heightened tensions triggered by sudden Indian decision to revoke the special status of the disputed territory by abrogating Article 370 of the constitution.

Pakistan strongly rejected the Indian decision, calling it illegal and in violation of UN Security Council resolutions that recognised Kashmir as a disputed territory.

The government took a series of steps to convey a strong message to New Delhi that the illegal annexation of Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK) would not go unnoticed.

The steps include downgrading of diplomatic ties as well as suspending bilateral trade. Within an hour of the decision taken by the National Security Committee (NSC), Pakistan asked India to withdraw its ambassador. Similarly, Islamabad decided not to send its envoy to New Delhi.

This and other decisions ignited fears that current tensions could escalate into a serious conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

When asked whether Pakistan was considering any military option, the foreign minister ruled out such a possibility, saying Pakistan would prefer “diplomacy and legal” options to deal with the situation arising out of the Indian decision on occupied Kashmir.

However, Qureshi while speaking to European Union (EU) Foreign Policy chief Federica Mogherini over the phone expressed the apprehension that India could stage a “false flag” operation, apportion blame on Pakistan and then embark on a misadventure in the Pakistani territory.

“The foreign minister emphasised that any escalation on the eastern border could jeopardise the efforts of the international community to bring peace and stability in Afghanistan,” according to the official handout.

The EU foreign policy chief stated that they were closely following the situation with deep concern. She agreed that any escalation in tensions in the region could negatively impact the Afghan peace process and affect the regional security and stability.

The EU high representative underscored that all disputes should be resolved through dialogue and peaceful means.

The foreign minister briefed the EU representative on the events of far-reaching consequences unfolding in the region in the wake of the unilateral steps taken by the Indian government in order to consolidate illegal occupation of IOK.

He highlighted that India had deployed 180,000 additional troops, suspended mobile and internet services and imposed a curfew, locking down the entire population of IOK. He added that unilateral steps taken by India were against the very essence of various resolutions of the UNSC on Jammu and Kashmir.

Foreign Minister Qureshi conveyed that steps taken by India had the real potential to further deteriorate human rights situation in IOK, as well as seriously impact peace and security in South Asia.

He had addressed two letters to the UN secretary general highlighting the gravity of the situation. He urged the high representative to appropriately brief the EU member states on the situation.

He also informed Mogherini about the decisions taken during the joint session of parliament, including downgrading of diplomatic relations, suspension of bilateral trade, review of bilateral agreements and taking the matter to the UNSC.

The two leaders agreed to stay in touch and continue to work together for peace and stability in the region.

Meanwhile, Qureshi also briefed heads of missions, ambassadors and members of diplomatic corps rejecting the Indian decision to try to change the disputed status of IOK.

According to a tweet by Foreign Office spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal, the foreign minister urged them to stop India from committing blatant violations of human rights in Kashmir.

He said India had turned occupied Kashmir into the largest prison in the world by deploying over 900,000 troops to subjugate 14 million Kashmiris.

Earlier, speaking at a weekly news briefing, the FO spokesperson rejected assertion by India that the decision on revoking IOK’s special status was India’s “internal matter”.

He said Kashmir was an internationally-recognised dispute and that there were UNSC resolutions on it.

To a question, he made it clear that Pakistan was not advocating for war with India. :rotfl:

Per Al Jazeera, 1,732,000,0000,000 people have fled villages along the Yellow Sea (by definition from the PORK side)
Authorities said an estimated xx,xxx, xxx, xxxx, xxx people left their homes over the past week when Indian artillery spread panic in the Neelum Valley on the Pakistan side of the LoC. In Chakothi, a town near the LoC, people said most did not have the resources to build bunkers or move to safer places.
Looks like Neelum Valley is being declared a Paki-Free-Zone? Interesting. Maybe Amit Shah WAS talking about near future, not far future.

Pakis are simply preparing ground for plausible deniability by taking relatively soft stand. But they are forgetting this is not a congress government who bought their lie of non-state actors after 26/11.

Pakis are openly threatening and ven telling foreign ambassadors that India will likely conduct a false flag operation and use it as excuse to attack Pakis.

Though no sane person will buy their retarded CT, this is as good an indicator of their intentions. They will try to do something nasty to somehow internationalize the issue. Because if they don't now, they have lost it for ever.

So, I was a bit confused listening to some of the Baki media where they mentioned that LoC has now become IB and that is when it struck me - how important A370 was for Bakis.

So, as long as A370 was there, the KMs thought that they were semi-independent and only a bit of violence is going to let India give them Azaadi and then they could join Bakistan. Bakistan also thought that Kashmir was one step away from being out of India and that's why they never considered LoC as border (after all, it'd become their province shortly, no ?). But after Aug5, there is no hope - forget autonomy, J&K lost its statehood even. For them, it means Kashmir as a cause is just gone.

It used to be that sometime ago (definitely around Kargil war), India made LoC sacrosanct, and Bakis wanted the Indian Kashmir. But now, the shoe is on the other foot - it is now the Bakis who need to defend the PORK & GB and that's why they will now make LoC the IB.

It is in our interest to keep the LoC hot and Bakis off balance.

Yes not only was it important for them in that regard, as LOC converts to IB, this acceptance also poses an existential question to Pakistani, their entire existence is going to be questioned now and so I am surprised that they did not react well initially, I think they were confused as to what this means for them and now only it is slowly sinking in for Paki govt and PA that if this goes by India’s plan, then this would bring questions from everyone on PA. I do not think they fully comprehend what this means for them.

Interesting times ahead... never thought would see this day.

Yes, they may be planning something while denying that they plan to use non-state actors or force.

@iyerval has a good article with OSINT along similar lines
These images show Pakistan is planning something sinister after India’s Article 370 move
India has to enforce rock-solid discipline in its security forces and micro-manage ground situation in Kashmir to avoid flare-ups.

News 18:

Pakistan appreciates UN Chief's restraining Pakistan from Invading India (Phew!!)
Pakistan Cabinet Approves Govt's Measures against India on Kashmir
The Cabinet appreciated the statement of UN Secretary-General on Kashmir in which he expressed concern on the situation and also recalled that under the Simla Agreement the final status of Jammu and Kashmir is to be settled by peaceful means.
The government has also banned the screening of Indian films in the country's cinemas.
Actually I think the Shimla Agreement said Pakistan would quit whining about Kashmir.

Now they will HAVE to watch Hasina AtimBum. What a break from watching the Hon. Minister for Hyooman Rites!

Well, banning Indian cinema only makes their movie theatres go bankrupt. They have tried this stunt before and then quietly allow it again after a while because otherwise their local cinema industry (and due to that local moviemakers as well) have to shut down.

UN, US & China rebuff Pakistan, deal it big diplomatic blow - Indrani Bagchi & Chidanand Rajghatta | TNN

NEW DELHI/WASHINGTON: Pakistan was on Friday rebuffed on all fronts in its effort to seek international mediation and intervention in its campaign against New Delhi’s move to turn Article 370 into a dead letter and bifurcate Jammu & Kashmir into two Union territories. While the biggest setback for Islamabad on Thursday came in the form of a United Nations’ virtual rejection of its August 6 appeal, it was no less of a jolt for Pakistan that it got a tepid response from China — its all-weather ally — on its lobbying on the Kashmir front.

Some deft diplomatic moves by India ensured that the UN Security Council refused to “take cognisance” of Pakistan’s letter to its president, asking for intervention after India’s Kashmir move.

In a letter on August 6 addressed to UNSC president and Polish diplomat Joanna Wronecka and UN General Assembly president Maria-Fernanda Espinosa Garces, Pakistan foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi sought their intervention to “ensure that India returns to full compliance of all UN resolutions by reversing all steps that interfere with the settlement of the Jammu & Kashmir dispute”.

The crux of the Pakistani argument was that India had carried out an “unofficial annexation” of J&K, which was a “material change of the situation” and a contravention of UNSC Resolution 48 of 1948.

India informed the UN that Article 370 was incorporated into the Indian Constitution in 1954, six years after the UNSC resolution and was revoked in 2019. Both happened after the UNSC resolution, so if the first did not signal a “material change” , neither could the second.

The UNSC president dropped Pakistan’s request and refused to answer questions on it. “The Secretary-General also recalls the 1972 Agreement on bilateral relations between India and Pakistan, also known as the Simla Agreement which states that the final status of Jammu & Kashmir is to be settled by peaceful means, in accordance with the UN Charter,” the UN said.

Although Pakistan tried to spin the statement as referring to “Indian-administered Kashmir”,
the UN’s view of J&K is of an undivided state, including parts occupied by Pakistan.
According to a UN spokesman, Secretary-General Antonio Gutteres called on “all parties to refrain from taking steps that could affect the status of Jammu and Kashmir”, a formulation that would also include changes Islamabad has effected on POK.

Guterres urged all parties to “exercise restraint” , his spokesman said, adding, over the past few days, the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) “has observed an increase in military activity” along the LoC.

Pakistan also got no comfort in Washington, where a State Department spokesperson said there was no change in the US policy on Kashmir, which calls for direct, bilateral talks. The US also doubled down on endorsing its strategic ties with India by announcing that deputy secretary of State Sullivan will travel to New Delhi and Thimphu “to advance the US partnership with two nations that are critical to preserving the rules-based order in the #IndoPacific region”.

Beijing too denied any support to Islamabad and told Pakistan foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who air-dashed there to seek its support on Kashmir, that it regarded both India and Pakistan as “friendly neighbours” and wants them to resolve the issue through UN resolutions and the Simla agreement.

Qureshi had held talks with Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi during which he said he believed “China will stand up for justice on the Kashmir issue”, a statement issued by the Chinese foreign ministry said. “It should be properly and peacefully resolved based on the UN Charter, relevant UNSC resolutions and bilateral agreement, ” Wang said.

Good piskoanalysis on Twitter as to why our birathers to the west are so agitated. Also to reply to an esteemed rakshak who burst a blood vessel demanding to know why modi did not talk about TSP in his speech.
most people have a vague (or strong) feeling that Modi has taken unilateral action that he knew would insult us, and he didn't even act worried. it was as if "we" didn't matter to him

Many people who felt they were not jingoistic or extremist at all, still shared in sense of nationalist pride/solidarity (as in all countries), and this has suddenly hit them.. they did not think we are going to grab Kashmir, but also did not imagine we could be so openly dissed
Paraphrasing an lizard like Unkil election consultant.

what options pakis have anyway....
1. try to assassinate some top leaders.
2. terror attacks
3. overt war

first option going to be devastating. you can't target people particularly when same thing will be done to you. all paki rich kids are under raw radar.
second and third options will result in some serious retaliation from our side.

best option for them - shift families to foreign and ride the storm until the end and run away. it's going to be bloody few years down the line.

There will be response but it will be around or after august 15, if you look at history of these attacks generally after 30 days of core commanders meeting such attacks have taken place.

They will wait out since due to preparation of our forces they will pbrobe and after finding week spot will start skirmish, I believe this will be in conjunction with terror attack on India. Once attack happens, India targets few camps/launchpads and porkis attack Indian military target well reccc in advance and things in place.

Actually not to distract. She started asking uncomfortable questions to dimran (and his handlers) "You went to US and declared victory. What happened" and also started asking questions like this did not happen under Nawaz. Did you strike a secret deal with Modi/US etc etc. She had to be silenced.

This is just posturing and nothing else. Where will they use the Naval assets? In a month you will find ISPR led media talking about how Paki army was ready for action for their Kashmir cause and moved their assets in position but they was stopped because of/by/for (fill in the blanks). Then it will be sewn into the narrative of many actions that Pakistani took for their Kashmiri brothers....

The paki's simply cannot take any defeat or jhapad from India and once they get it they seek refuge in the Hadiths saying that after the next war with pakistan, Hindus will all be accepting Islam. Zaid Hamid is not going to like it as he has some serious competition coming from a Hashish smoking 'anal' yst.
The Paki Towel Throwing thread was the best ever. I hope that comes back again!

It seems they are not preparing to attack, they are preparing for attack by india when their "non state actors" create a major incident.

I would stick my neck out and predict a symbolic military action from the pakis followed by a huge propaganda campaign of their muh tod jawab. The proxy option might not satisfy the h & d requirements. It won't be enough to cut ice with the jehadis and the disconsolate Awam.

They have to take some visible action, some sort of 'crippling blow' to pacify their people. Also think about the consequences if they don't do anything. real warriors will no longer listen to the paki army. No one follows weak leader.

We will not distinguish between state or non state actors. They were given enough chances to save their mardangi. This time around our responses are disproportionate, so Napak are crying with reports like carpet bombing or cluster bombs. They are expecting bullet for bullet exchange but we are giving 10 golas from toap khanna

Hafiz Saeed, In and Out: The terrorist's detention was perhaps the shortest ever. But we know why
Taken into custody on July 17, reportedly set free on August 7, Hafiz Saeed's arrest is clearly the biggest eyewash Pakistan is trying to sell the world.
ARINDAM DE, 08-08-2019
Wow, that was quick. Arrested on July 17, just prior to Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's US trip, Hafeez Saeed was reportedly released by a Gujranwala court early on Wednesday, August 7. This was probably his shortest 'detention'. There were reports that his case has been 'shifted' to Gujrat and his trial would continue there. Well, we all know too well what connotations words like 'arresting', 'detaining', 'taken into custody' have vis-a-vis Hafiz Muhammad Saeed. In July, he was arrested in connection with a terrorism financing case and an elated President Donald Trump hailed Pakistan for 'sniffing' out the Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief, after a 'protracted' search. India and the world know this ruse only too well. To borrow Taha Siddiqui's words, “Arrest. Free. Repeat” has been Pakistan's policy on Hafiz Saeed since 2001.
Sadly, Washington's desperation over trying to get out of Afghanistan — somehow and quickly — and trying to enlist Pakistan's involvement to make this possible has apparently blinded President Trump to the 'Sunday dressing and behaviour' Pakistani leadership portray when cosying up to world powers.
