40% drop in Twitter accounts reported by Pakistan - Waleed Tariq
KARACHI: It may have been a sign of stricter government controls: the number of accounts reported to Twitter by the Government of Pakistan has dropped by 40% year on year in the first six months of 2019, according to the social networking site’s 15th biannual report.
CheersThe number of profiles reported between January and June this year stands at 1,798 as against 3,004 in the same period last year, says the Twitter’s transparency report released on Thursday. The government sent requests for the removal of 265 accounts in the mentioned period.

As a Paki watcher, I think this too will end in a fiasco for both parties with SC/IHC getting involved at some point. There may be some violence as JUI supporters are no paragons of Ahimsa.

But passport will be enforced for re-entry into India, of course. Otherwise who knows what kind of people the Pakis will sneak in along with the yatris?
I was actually very happy to see that the MEA site to register to visit Kartarpur doesn't ask for your religion. In theory, non-sikhs could visit. However in practice, Pakis will probably not give non-sikhs pre-authorization which is required.

Right-wing Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman launched the “Azadi March” along with leaders of other opposition parties on October 27 from the southern Sindh province, demanding Khan'sresignation, DESELECTION accusing him of "rigging" the 2018 general elections.
He also accused the prime minister of mismanagement of economy, inefficiency and bad governance that has increased hardships of common people.
Rehman was scheduled to arrive in Islamabad on October 31. However, it was delayed as his caravan of hundreds of vehicles made a slow progress, JUI-F leaders said.
The cleric travelled through Sukkur, Multan, Lahore and Gujranwala to reach Islamabad in the wee hours of Friday.
"The person (Prime Minister Khan) has come to power through rigging of elections. He should see the writing on the wall and resign or we will drive him out," he told his supporters on the way.
In an interview to AAJ TV, Rehman said there would be “chaos” in the country if the prime minister did not resign.
According to security institutions, thousands of people are taking part in the “Azadi March”.
The crowd further swelled in Islamabad, as supporters of opposition parties, including Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan People Party (PPP), joined the anti-government protest rally.
The protestors have encamped in the sprawling ground near Peshawar Mor area where different political parties have set up their camps to house their workers.
Addressing the demonstrators at the venue, PPP chief Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said Imran Khan is a "puppet" and the nation is not ready to bow its head before a "selected" prime minister and "those who have selected him".
Rehman in a tweet thanked all protesters and the opposition leaders for their support.
He said the rally will now start after the Friday prayers and all senior opposition leaders would be present.
It is not clear if the protesters would disperse after rally or settle for a sit-in to force the government to accept their demands.
Meanwhile, Pakistani authorities have made elaborate security arrangements to control the sea of protesters. Main roads have been completely or partially blocked by placing shipping containers.
Barbed wires have been used as hurdles to prevent protesters if they try to move towards the Red Zone that includes key official buildings and diplomatic enclave.
Additional police and paramilitary personnel have also been deployed in Islamabad to prevent any violence. The government deployed army personnel in sensitive places in the capital.
The Islamabad local administration requisitioned 111 Brigade in the highly secured Red Zone, which houses sensitive buildings like Parliament House, Supreme Court, Foreign Office, Pakistan Television, Radio Pakistan and Diplomatic Enclave (a cluster of dozens of foreign embassies).
Interior Minister Ijaz Shah warned of a crackdown if there is any violence. "I hope they (protesters) will follow the agreement they have signed with the government to remain peaceful," he said.
Prime Minister M Khan has already denounced the protest, saying that the opposition parties were trying to blackmail him.
The ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party alleged that the protest was promoted by the PML-N and the PPP to force the government to release its top leaders, currently held in jails.
Khan and his party has ruled out hisresignation DESELECTION but readiness to accept any other demand to improve election system of governance.
The protest comes as the government struggles to lift up the faltering economy of the country

ISLAMABAD : Pakistan's hard-line cleric Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Friday gave Prime Imran Khan a two-day ultimatum to resign, saying the "Gorbachev of Pakistan" must step down without testing the patience of peaceful protestors.
Addressing a massive protest rally, dubbed 'Azadi March' , held here to topple the incumbent government, Rehman said only people of Pakistan and not any "institution" had the right to govern the country.
The much-hyped rally led by the right-wing opposition leader's Jamiat Ulema-eIslam-Fazl
(JUI-F) reached its final destination Islamabad on Thursday after it set off from the Sindh province and left Lahore on Wednesday.
Along with Rehman, leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan People's Party (PPP), and Awami National Party (ANP) participated in the march held to topple Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government led by Prime Minister Khan.
"The elections of 25 July were fraud elections. We neither accept the results nor the government that came into power after those elections. We gave this government one year but now we cannot give them any more time," he said.
He said the Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government has destroyed the economy while endangering the very existence of the country.
"The Gorbachev of Pakistan must go. We give (Khan) two days to resign, otherwise, we will decide about the future," he said
Rehman said the protestors were peaceful but their patience should not be tested. He urged his followers to stay put and "do not move until we get his resignation".
He said the future course of action will be decided in consultation with the opposition parties and the protestors if the deadline was not met.
Rehman also urged the powerful institutions (of armed forces) to stay neutral in the situation.
"We do not want conflict with our institutions. But we also want to see them to stay neutral. We give two days to the institutions (also) to decide if they will continue to support this government. After that, we will decide what opinion we should have about them (institutions)," he said.
Rehman also attacked the government's Kashmir policy and accused it of abandoning Kashmiris. He said the government was making friendship with India by opening up the Kartarpur corridor.
"The time has come to get rid of this fake government. "We will not let Imran Khan Niazi go free until Pakistan gets rid of [the prime minister]," said PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif while addressing the huge gathering attended by tens of thousands of people here.
"We have launched a movement to get rid of the government and will take this movement to logical end," he said.
The joint opposition can stabilise the country's economy within six months if given a chance, Sharif said, adding that he has never seen a worse state of affairs in the country's 72-year history.
"If given a chance, we along with the joint opposition will fix Pakistan's economy within six months, [otherwise] you can rename me as 'Imran Niazi'," he was
quoted as saying by the Dawn newspaper.
ANP leader Mian Iftikhar Hussain said the opposition parties will not rest until the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-led government has been "sent home".
He said the first and foremost demand of the 'Azadi March' protesters was the resignation of Prime Minister Khan.
"Our election has been stolen," he said, referring to the Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government coming into power.
Addressing the demonstrators at the venue, PPP chief Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said Imran Khan was a "puppet" and the nation is not ready to bow its head before a "selected" prime minister and "those who have selected him".
"We do not accept this selected government…Everything done by the government is against the interests of the people," he said, adding that the PTI government has sold Kashmir to India which was unacceptable to the people.
He said the army was deployed inside and outside the polling stations in last year elections to facilitate Khan's victory.
Unfazed by the protest, Prime Minister Khan, while addressing a public rally in Gilgit-Baltistan, told the protesters congregated in Islamabad that when they run out of food, more will be sent to them, but their leaders should not expect any relief from him.
"Gone are the days when one used to use Islam to gain power. This is a new Pakistan. Sit however long you want. When your food runs out, we will send more. But we will not give you an (NRO)," he said.
National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) was an ordinance issued in October 2007 granting pardon to politicians, political workers and bureaucrats accused of corruption, embezzlement, money laundering, murder, and terrorism
"Who are they wishing to gain freedom from? I want the media to go there and ask people who they wish to free themselves from," Khan said, adding that all his opponents appear disjointed in their thoughts and aims.

ISLAMABAD : Pakistan's hard-line cleric Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Friday gave Prime Imran Khan a two-day ultimatum to resign, saying the "Gorbachev of Pakistan" must step down without testing the patience of peaceful protestors.
Addressing a massive protest rally, dubbed 'Azadi March' , held here to topple the incumbent government, Rehman said only people of Pakistan and not any "institution" had the right to govern the country.
The much-hyped rally led by the right-wing opposition leader's Jamiat Ulema-eIslam-Fazl
(JUI-F) reached its final destination Islamabad on Thursday after it set off from the Sindh province and left Lahore on Wednesday.
Along with Rehman, leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan People's Party (PPP), and Awami National Party (ANP) participated in the march held to topple Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government led by Prime Minister Khan.
"The elections of 25 July were fraud elections. We neither accept the results nor the government that came into power after those elections. We gave this government one year but now we cannot give them any more time," he said.
He said the Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government has destroyed the economy while endangering the very existence of the country.
"The Gorbachev of Pakistan must go. We give (Khan) two days to resign, otherwise, we will decide about the future," he said
Rehman said the protestors were peaceful but their patience should not be tested. He urged his followers to stay put and "do not move until we get his resignation".
He said the future course of action will be decided in consultation with the opposition parties and the protestors if the deadline was not met.
Rehman also urged the powerful institutions (of armed forces) to stay neutral in the situation.
"We do not want conflict with our institutions. But we also want to see them to stay neutral. We give two days to the institutions (also) to decide if they will continue to support this government. After that, we will decide what opinion we should have about them (institutions)," he said.
Rehman also attacked the government's Kashmir policy and accused it of abandoning Kashmiris. He said the government was making friendship with India by opening up the Kartarpur corridor.
"The time has come to get rid of this fake government. "We will not let Imran Khan Niazi go free until Pakistan gets rid of [the prime minister]," said PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif while addressing the huge gathering attended by tens of thousands of people here.
"We have launched a movement to get rid of the government and will take this movement to logical end," he said.
The joint opposition can stabilise the country's economy within six months if given a chance, Sharif said, adding that he has never seen a worse state of affairs in the country's 72-year history.
"If given a chance, we along with the joint opposition will fix Pakistan's economy within six months, [otherwise] you can rename me as 'Imran Niazi'," he was
quoted as saying by the Dawn newspaper.
ANP leader Mian Iftikhar Hussain said the opposition parties will not rest until the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-led government has been "sent home".
He said the first and foremost demand of the 'Azadi March' protesters was the resignation of Prime Minister Khan.
"Our election has been stolen," he said, referring to the Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government coming into power.
Addressing the demonstrators at the venue, PPP chief Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said Imran Khan was a "puppet" and the nation is not ready to bow its head before a "selected" prime minister and "those who have selected him".
"We do not accept this selected government…Everything done by the government is against the interests of the people," he said, adding that the PTI government has sold Kashmir to India which was unacceptable to the people.
He said the army was deployed inside and outside the polling stations in last year elections to facilitate Khan's victory.
Unfazed by the protest, Prime Minister Khan, while addressing a public rally in Gilgit-Baltistan, told the protesters congregated in Islamabad that when they run out of food, more will be sent to them, but their leaders should not expect any relief from him.
"Gone are the days when one used to use Islam to gain power. This is a new Pakistan. Sit however long you want. When your food runs out, we will send more. But we will not give you an (NRO)," he said.
National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) was an ordinance issued in October 2007 granting pardon to politicians, political workers and bureaucrats accused of corruption, embezzlement, money laundering, murder, and terrorism
"Who are they wishing to gain freedom from? I want the media to go there and ask people who they wish to free themselves from," Khan said, adding that all his opponents appear disjointed in their thoughts and aims.
The prime minister said the protest rally had made Pakistan's enemy happy.
"I will put all of them into jail," he said, in an apparent reference to former premier Nawaz Sharif, his brother Shehbaz, former President Asif Ali Zardari and former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.
The government has taken elaborate security arrangements to keep calm in the capital. Main roads have been completely or partially blocked by placing shipping containers.
"You started this container politics, you said you will burn down the Parliament, you said something about me. I will not respond to you in your language. Despite such blatant rigging, for the benefit of the nation, we said we are ready for a charter of economy. He rejected our offer with extreme pride and arrogance," he said as he delivered a fiery address at the joint opposition rally.
The joint opposition can stabilise the country's economy within six months if given a chance, Sharif said, adding that he has never seen a worse state of affairs in the country's 72-year history.

What is Mullah Diesel's real endgame here? He is not stupid enough to believe a Dharna can make Dimran step down. Only Bajwa can do that and Bajwa is not going to show weakness at this point. That might trigger an internal coup against him by his crore commanders who are already causing problems.

You may be right here. It does look like the army is not behind the protest which makes this a lot more interesting. There is this theory floating around that some disgruntled crore kammandus are behind this protest. The timing of the protest is also intriguing because Bajwa's extension has not yet been notified by the Paki president. Whatever it is I'm rooting for Maulana Diesel to become the wazir-e-azam. Apparently Mullah Diesel saw a opening where both PPP and PML are down and out, Dimran policies are unpopular and he can grab some power this way.

WAF seeks removal of Munir Akram as Pakistan's permanent envoy to UN - Our Correspondent
KARACHI: The Women’s Action Forum (WEF) has sought the removal of Munir Akram as Pakistani’s permanent ambassador to the United Nations, terming his reappointment “illegal, unlawful, unconstitutional and liable to be struck down”.
Akram replaced Dr Maleeha Lodhi at the global body shortly after Prime Minister Imran Khan’s campaign at the UNGA in September.
The petition, filed by WAF in the Sindh High Court, states that the reappointment violated Section 14(1) of the Civil Servants Act 1973.
The petition cited a Supreme Court decision in a suo moto case pertaining to corruption in 2010 Hajj arrangements, wherein it maintained that a retired civil servant could only be re-employed in an exceptional case.

It said that the superior courts have elucidated interpretation of the term ‘public interest’ by saying that the government cannot claim to be exempted from the obligation to follow any law, rules and regulations “on some indefinite and undisclosed ground of necessity or expediency, nor can the Government unilaterally deviate from its legal obligation and justify such deviation on an ex-parte appraisement of the circumstances”.
“If the Government intends to justify an act on the ground of public interest, it is required under the law, to disclose cogent and definite reasons for carrying out such act,” the petition said. “The Government is bound to produce proper and adequate material in order to satisfy that overriding public interest justified execution of the same.”
In its petition, WAF stressed on the importance of a domestic violence accusation against Akram, and urged the court to “reflect on the impression this creates in the global environment, and also the impression made of the standards of behaviour reflective of official representatives”.
“To ignore one claim, especially at a time when women’s rights movements are pushing for ‘Believe Her’, is to present a poor image of Pakistan, a Pakistan that does not uphold women’s rights or understands the complexities of domestic violence claims.”
The petitioners have prayed to declare the reappointment illegal and permanently restrain Akram from performing duties of a UN permanent ambassador.

Two powerful and unprecedented narratives are playing havoc with the sentiments of the nation. The first is about Nawaz Sharif’s disqualifications and convictions, personal health and heir apparent. This narrative is fast assuming critical mass in the democratic struggle for civilian supremacy over the Miltablishment. The second is about Maulana Fazal ur Rahman’s “long march” that has arrived in Islamabad and captured the stage for ousting Imran Khan and his PTI government.
The success of one narrative feeds into the other. Together, they serve to reinforce the popular rejection of the unholy alliance of the Miltablishment with the PTI that seeks, first, to exclude the two mainstream PMLN-PPP parties, the JUI and smaller regional parties and their political leaders from the political stakeholder landscape and, second, to establish a one-Miltablishment party rule in the country that diminishes the constitutional rights and autonomies of civil society, media and judiciary.
In an extraordinary display of personal courage and political astuteness, Nawaz Sharif has resisted Miltablishment efforts to emasculate him physically and politically so that the PMLQ reverts to its traditional King’s Party role. The more Nawaz has stood his ground despite failing health, the more popular he has become; the more the Miltablishment joins with select judges to thwart him, the more discredit they heap upon themselves. It has now come to pass that the Miltablishment is desperate to let him go so that his failing health doesn’t become a millstone around its neck.
Maulana Fazl has sprung up out of nowhere to seize the moment. His JUI is a most unexpected and unsuitable substitute for the PPP or PMLN. But he has filled the vacuum created by the decimation of the leadership of both parties and captured the imagination of the people. The Miltablishment is now scrambling to save its nth political experiment in extra-constitutionalism.
Several questions have arisen. If Nawaz Sharif has dug his heels in to resist the Miltablishment, why isn’t the rest of the PMLN parliamentary leadership in step with him? The pressure on him from Miltablishment, party and “family” to leave the country and quit politics is relentless. Indeed, that is why the PMLN has not actively lent its crowds to swell the long march heading to Islamabad. Much the same may be said of Asif Zardari and the PPP. Is it because both PMLN and PPP are cowering in shame and impotence following credible charges of corruption against party bigwigs, and wish to avoid coming under the Miltablishment heel any more forcefully?
This raises the question of why Maulana Fazl has decided to take a solo flight at the end of October and refused to postpone it even by a month at the request of both Shahbaz Sharif and Bilawal Bhutto. Never one to resist the inducements of power, he has taken on both the PTI government and the Miltablishment. If his purpose was merely to oust Imran Khan, his mission would have been better served by taking along the PMLN and PPP and delaying the Long March. No, it does seem that he has thrown the gauntlet to that section of the Miltablishment and PTI that is constantly threatening all and sundry with its “same-page” unity because he has the implicit but firm support of those in the same constellation who are not on the same page.
One issue, above all, has muddied the waters. That is the matter of the extension in tenure of COAS General Qamar Javed Bajwa. Since both Gen Bajwa and Imran Khan never tire of reminding everyone of unity and continuity in command, this was a no-brainer. Yet some decidedly curious steps and statements have clouded the issue. In mid-August we were shown a “notification” from the office of the PM, signed by Imran Khan, giving an extension of three years to Gen Bajwa. But when it was pointed out that the notification must come from the office of the President of Pakistan, there was a stunning silence. In mid-September, a journalist asked President Arif Alvi whether he had signed and issued any such notification. His reply: “Although a decision has been taken to extend Gen Bajwa’s tenure, the file has not yet been sent up to me for signing.” Now, on the eve of the Maulana’s entry into Islamabad, a journalist has been put up to “confirm” that such a notification has indeed been signed by President Alvi. If that is the case, why is everyone pussyfooting around the subject? Why don’t we get to see the notification? Has it been signed but not declared in the public domain for some reason? Might the invisible “notification” be withdrawn or substituted by another notification in the near future? Does Maulana’s demand for Imran Khan’s ouster have anything to do with it? Who is going home? How close are the objectives of Nawaz Sharif and the Maulana? The answers are blowing in the wind.

Over 30 Pakistan immigrants found hidden in truck in southern France - ANI
PARIS: Over 30 Pakistani migrants, including three teenagers, were found hidden in a truck after it was intercepted during a routine check on a motorway in southern France, prosecutors said on Saturday.
The 30 migrants, along with the driver of the truck, who is also of Pakistani origin, were handed over to Italian authorities for "facilitating the illegal entry" into the French territory, Sputnik reported, citing Nice-Matin newspaper.
The incident has come days after bodies of 39 migrants were found from inside a truck at an industrial park in Grays, a town located 40 kilometres east of London, UK. Five suspects, including the truck driver, were arrested in connection with the incident, and three were later released on bail

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has said that delegations of Afghan Taliban are officially welcomed in Islamabad by the PTI government therefore criticising presence of a few such flags is baseless and an attempt to malign the Azadi March.
“With presidential protocol, the United States engaged with Afghan Taliban in peace talks… and with the same protocol they were welcomed in Moscow as well. And you ask us why a boy carried their flag in our rally,” he said while addressing the anti-government rally that entered its second day in the capital on Saturday.
“Where the world has headed to and where you are standing… we will also be right to consider this as an attempt to do a negative propaganda against the march,” he said and warned the Islamabad administration against creating chaos.
“They should be careful before using such tactics, otherwise this rally is enough for your entire Islamabad… these people are enough for your whole government… and people have just begin to arrive here and more will arrive tonight and tomorrow and you should be prepared for them also.”
At least eight activists of the anti-government protest in Islamabad were arrested after authorities said they were waving flags of foreign banned outfits. According to reports, the activists have been moved to an undisclosed location.
“No one will be allowed to advocate malicious elements against the state in the name of Azadi March,” said Islamabad Deputy Commissioner (DC) Hamza Shafqat.
Some of the JUI-F leaders asked the Islamabad Police to release the arrested activists. They also threatened that no agreement would be followed if the activists were not released within an hour.
Maulana Fazl, in today’s address, said the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan has lost moral grounds to rule the country and slammed it for ‘hatching controversies’ against his “peaceful march”.
Not just the Indian but the entire international media is covering the Azadi March, said the firebrand cleric referring to PM Imran’s criticism over his protest’s coverage on Indian channels.
Reacting to the criticism from certain quarters over no participation of women in the march, Maulana Fazl said every society has its own norms and values, and no woman was stopped from participating in the protest.
“Our women are participating in this protest from their homes,” he said. “They are fasting and praying [for our success]… we have women in legislatures.”
He added even female journalists were fulfilling their responsibilities and covering the march without any hindrance.
“I want to take an oath from you that you’ll say yes to any directives given to you by the joint opposition including the JUI-F,” he said amid slogans in his favour in a sign of participants’ approval.
“No one could ever imagine achieving in even 100 years what objectives we have achieved in just three days.”
The JUI-F chief vowed to remain peaceful and achieve one target after the other by remaining within the constitutional limits until this ‘illegitimate government’ is ousted.
“You [PM Imran] must realise that you are not in power any longer and your writ on Pakistan has weakened… now we control the country and we’ll run the country peacefully and stabilise its crippling economy and protect every segment of the society.”
Maulana Fazl then urged Prime Minister Imran to resign and stop taking advantage of his ‘civility’.

Some of the JUI-F leaders asked the Islamabad Police to release the arrested activists. They also threatened that no agreement would be followed if the activists were not released within an hour.
Maulana Fazl, in today’s address, said the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan has lost moral grounds to rule the country and slammed it for ‘hatching controversies’ against his “peaceful march”.
Not just the Indian but the entire international media is covering the Azadi March, said the firebrand cleric referring to PM Imran’s criticism over his protest’s coverage on Indian channels.
Reacting to the criticism from certain quarters over no participation of women in the march, Maulana Fazl said every society has its own norms and values, and no woman was stopped from participating in the protest.
“Our women are participating in this protest from their homes,” he said. “They are fasting and praying [for our success]… we have women in legislatures.”
He added even female journalists were fulfilling their responsibilities and covering the march without any hindrance.
“I want to take an oath from you that you’ll say yes to any directives given to you by the joint opposition including the JUI-F,” he said amid slogans in his favour in a sign of participants’ approval.
“No one could ever imagine achieving in even 100 years what objectives we have achieved in just three days.”
The JUI-F chief vowed to remain peaceful and achieve one target after the other by remaining within the constitutional limits until this ‘illegitimate government’ is ousted.
“You [PM Imran] must realise that you are not in power any longer and your writ on Pakistan has weakened… now we control the country and we’ll run the country peacefully and stabilise its crippling economy and protect every segment of the society.”
Maulana Fazl then urged Prime Minister Imran to resign and stop taking advantage of his ‘civility’.
