Why on Wednesday. Normally these bombs go off on Jumma day for better impact. Maybe it was just a warning to someone by someone but who and why now. Paki society is reaching a state where there are too many wheels within a wheel.

The Verdict

Vladimir Putin ‘snubbing’ Imran Khan – why all the fuss? - Farooq Yousaf
When Pakistan failed to secure a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the recent Belt and Road Forum, a report in the Express Tribune called it a major “diplomatic setback”. Sure, many would have expected Prime Minister Imran Khan to have at least had a casual meet up with the president of Pakistan’s new “regional ally on Afghanistan,” however, it seemed that Putin had other, and more important, commitments.
Thirdly, even if Putin did not have prior commitments, one has to take into account the fact that India is a far bigger, and more important, partner of Russia than Pakistan is. Moscow would need to thoroughly plan the optics of any meet up with Islamabad without irking New Delhi. When one looks at the numbers, Pakistan-Russia trade is far less than $1 billion, while Indo-Russia trade hit the $9 billion mark last year.

Islamic lunar calendar to be ready in two weeks
Aiming to end perpetual uncertainty over moon-sighting in the country, federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry announced on Wednesday that a calendar showing main Islamic dates and months for the next five years based on scientific evidence would be ready and placed before the cabinet by the 15th of Ramazan.

“We have tremendous respect for ulema and they may be good at their jobs but these elderly people can barely see people in front of them clearly let alone spot a fine crescent,” the minister said at a press conference. :((

“We cannot understand the stubbornness of the ulema who insist on sighting the moon alone. Moon-sighting is a scientific process. Science can precisely tell the birth of the moon and that is why Imam Shafai described moon-sighting as an arithmetic process,” he said.

Further rupee fall, interest rate hike expected - Salman Siddiqui
KARACHI: Pakistan is bracing for an economic jolt as the government is expected to allow a significant rupee depreciation and key interest rate hike in 2019. These steps will be taken to implement the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) loan programme, a research house of a brokerage firm said on Wednesday.
In a paper on “Pakistan’s Economy: IMF Programme and its Implications”, Topline Research said the government was expected to let the rupee depreciate 13-17% to Rs160-165 against the US dollar by December 2019 and the key interest rate may be raised by 1.25 percentage points to the peak of 12% during the year.
Earlier, the central bank had let the currency depreciate by 34% to Rs141.3 to the greenback and increased the interest rate by five percentage points to 10.75% since December 2017.
Seemingly Terroristani Rupee is built on a Foundation of "Quick Sand." :rotfl:

Does anyone know if the President of FATF has veto power? From this doc https://www.fatf-gafi.org/media/fatf/do ... 2-2020.pdf , it looks like there is no veto power.
The President is the principal spokesperson for the FATF and represents the FATF externally.
The President will be informed of all significant matters that concern the FATF. More generally, the
President takes all decisions and actions as necessary to achieve the objectives of the FATF in
accordance with this mandate and the directions given by the Plenary.
The President reports
regularly on behalf of the FATF Plenary to the Ministers on key aspects of FATF work and more
generally to the public through the FATF annual report.

The President, in the discharge of the functions as the President, owes his/her duty entirely
to the FATF and to no other authorities or institutions.
Pakistan has been making lot of noise about India being in a review committee overseeing Pakistan's case which means it knows a Chinese as President of FATF won't help. Imagine the double blow to H&D if Pakistan gets into blacklist under a Chinese President.

There is no veto power. But, black or grey listing needs unanimity of all members (like in NSG).

China must have struck a deal with US to not to blacklist pakistan in return of declaring Masoon a global terrorist. I highly doubt pakistan will be blacklisted that too with China voting in favor. Blacklisting will jeopardize their own loans to pakistan.

But Pakisatan was grey listed even though Turkey voted against it. To prevent greylisting (and probably blacklisting) you need THREE votes against it. S Arabia, China and Turkey voted agaisnt it first time. S Arabia dropped out, then China to save face dropped out leaving only Turkey to vote against it.

Yes. I am quite serious. But maybe the topic is not ripe for discussion right now, but maybe a few months after election results. Some geopolitical game rules are likely to be reset by uncle.

Unkil has a plan going for years where JSOC with support from CENTCOM will carry out 'render-safe missions'. The problem of course is knowing where all the sites are.

‘Live in difficulty until govt fixes system’
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has asked the people to have heart and ‘stay strong’ in the face of economic complexities and rising inflation.
He assured the masses that the country shall make it through this time.
It was a lackluster address by Imran Khan as it lacks thunder against the opposition and bashing of the opponents. Comparatively, it was a brief speech where debts were mentioned by him without accusing and shouting at the loan-takers.
The prime minister said that the government has launched health insurance card under which a family can get medical treatment at private or government hospitals up to Rs720,000.
Imran Khan promised that his government would try its best to "fulfill the basic needs of the people".
He said the government has started Ehsas programme to mitigate sufferings of common people. He said goats, hens, and cattle will be provided to poor families in villages so that they can become financially independent. Imran Khan said he fully realizes that inflation has gone up in the country. He said tough days will soon end as the country is passing through difficult times.
He said that promotion of knowledge-based economy is vital for economic development to utilise youth's potential. He also emphasised on introducing innovation and modern technology to fully utilise country's capacity in agriculture sector.

Armed militants storm five star hotel in Gwadar: police
Firing is taking place at the Pearl Continental (PC) Hotel in Gwadar after three to four armed militants stormed the facility, according to Gwadar Station House Officer (SHO) Aslam Bangulzai.
The Pearl Continental (PC) Hotel in Gwadar, is located on the Koh-e-Batil Hill, south of West Bay on Fish Harbour Road. The five-star hotel is frequented by both business and leisure travellers.
China is currently working with the federal government to develop Gwadar port to facilitate connectivity and trade. Beijing is investing around $50 billion in Pakistan as part of a plan unveiled in 2015 to link its far-western Xinjiang region to Gwadar port in Balochistan with a series of infrastructure, power and transport upgrades.

Armed militants storm five star hotel in Gwadar: police - Dawn.com | Syed Ali Shah

Firing is taking place at the Pearl Continental (PC) Hotel in Gwadar after three to four armed militants stormed the facility, according to Gwadar Station House Officer (SHO) Aslam Bangulzai.

"At around 4:50pm we got reports that there are three to four armed men in PC Hotel," the SHO said, adding that "the firing is ongoing but there are no reports of any casualties yet".

The police official further said that "there are no foreigners at the hotel right now."

SHO Bangulzai said that "additional police force, ATF (Anti-terrorism force) and army are all present" at the hotel to handle the situation.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohsin Hassan Butt also confirmed that "two to three gunmen had first fired at and then entered the hotel."

The IGP said the hotel did not have any foreigners at the time of the attack and that only the hotel staff was inside. He also said that "95 per cent of the hotel has been evacuated."

IGP Butt further said that "the attackers may have come in a boat to launch the attack."

Frontier Corps personnel have cordoned off the hotel and no one is allowed to go near the area, DawnNewsTV reported citing police sources.

The Pearl Continental (PC) Hotel in Gwadar, is located on the Koh-e-Batil Hill, south of West Bay on Fish Harbour Road. The five-star hotel is frequented by both business and leisure travellers.

The attack comes just weeks after 14 people, including 11 personnel of Navy, Air Force and Coast Guards, were killed by gunmen near Ormara in Gwadar.

Gunmen battle security forces in five-star hotel in Pakistan: officials
three gunmen attacked a luxury hotel in Pakistan’s southwestern port city of Gwadar on Saturday, killing at least one guard and battling security forces from inside the building, security officials and the army said.
Balochistan Home Minister Ziaullah Langove said most guests had been evacuated from the five-star Pearl Continental Hotel, which helicopters circled as fighting was underway. He said there were reports of casualties, but did not give details.
The military said three gunmen killed a guard at the entrance to the hotel when they entered. Security forces had cordoned off the area and cornered the attackers in a staircase leading to the top floor, the military said in a statement.

Islamabad has blinked first in the staring battle along the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border between India and Pakistan. Under sustained pressure from India, Pakistan has offered to de-escalate tensions along the LoC . The offer to India was made by the Pakistani military “through the institutionalised military channels of communication between the two sides,” a senior official in the Indian security establishment said on condition of anonymity.

The Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two countries are regularly in touch and HT learns that the offer may have come during such an interaction.

Pakistan has offered to remove its Special Service Group (SSG) – the special forces of Pakistan – from the LoC and even suggested a “moratorium on the artillery fire from both sides,” a report sent to the Prime Minister’s Office said. HT has seen a copy of the report.

This sounds like a media article doing some psyops/chest-thumping for India, but make no mistake - the purpose of leaking this via the media is so that WKKs and Lutyens peaceniks can now pressure GOI to make concessions, while painting Modi as a warmonger. The Pakis sure know who their friends in India are, and they leverage them to the hilt.

In the IE interview, PM had but one sentence to say on this.

"The way ahead depends on the action Pakistan takes against terrorism."

Lutyens, WKKs will simply have no traction on this, nor can they build up any meaningful public pressure on this issue.

The HT correspondent is sourcing it to an Indian Govt official. Two possibilities. One it is a source sympathetic to Aman ki Asha crowd and wants a deescalation or the Govt wants to send a signal to Indian population that we have gained the upper hand while simultaneously telling the public that we are keeping the pressure on.

Call me pessimistic, but I am less sanguine about that. Firstly Modi has to win, and win in a way that he is not dependent on coalition partners for strategic direction. Then, there has been a lot of noise in the Paki power circles and their friends in India and the West about how the action against Pakistan has been driven by election aims, and that there will be a push towards 'de-escalation' and 'talks' after the elections - even assuming that this is 100% hogwash, there will be tremendous pressure brought to bear along those lines. And lastly, it is worrying that we do not have a strategic culture that ensure continuity of such policies - it should not have to hinge on any one politician being re-elected.

Saudi Arabia’s oil tankers hit by 'sabotage attacks' as Gulf Saudi Arabia's oil tankers hit tensions soar – AFP

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia said on Monday two of its oil tankers were damaged in "sabotage attacks" in the Gulf as tensions soared in a region already shaken by a standoff between the United States and Iran.

It came as US secretary of state Mike Pompeoscrapped a planned visit to Moscow to head to Brussels instead for talks with European officials on Iran.

Tehran called for an investigation into the "alarming" attacks and warned of "adventurism" by foreign players to disrupt maritime security.

The United States has already strengthened its military presence in the region, including deploying a number of strategic B-52 bombers in response to alleged Iranian threats.

Saudi Arabia, the Islamic republic's regional arch-rival, condemned "the acts of sabotage which targeted commercial and civilian vessels near the territorial waters of the United Arab Emirates," a foreign ministry source said.

"This criminal act constitutes a serious threat to the security and safety of maritime navigation and adversely impacts regional and international peace and security," the source added.

The UAE said on Sunday that four commercial vessels of various nationalities had been targeted by acts of sabotage off the emirate of Fujairah.

Saudi energy minister Khalid al-Falih said the two tankers suffered "significant damage" but there were no casualties or any oil spill.

"Two Saudi oil tankers were subjected to a sabotage attack in the exclusive economic zone of the United Arab Emirates, off the coast of the Emirate of Fujairah, while on their way to cross into the Arabian Gulf," the SPA state news agency quoted Falih as saying.

Fujairah port is the only terminal in the UAE located on the coast, bypassing the Strait of Hormuz, through which most Gulf oil exports pass.

Iran has repeatedly threatened to close the strait in case of a military confrontation with the United States.

One of the two tankers that was attacked was on its way to be loaded with crude oil from a Saudi oil terminal for customers in the United States, Falih said.

The UAE did not accuse anyone of responsibility but warned that "carrying out acts of sabotage on commercial and civilian vessels and threatening the safety and lives of those on board is a serious development".

No one was hurt and Abu Dhabi called on world powers to help keep maritime traffic safe.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi expressed concern over the incident and its possible consequences.

"The incidents in the Sea of Oman are alarming and regrettable," Mousavi said in an English-language statement on the ministry's website.

He also "warned against plots by ill-wishers to disrupt regional security" and "called for the vigilance of regional states in the face of any adventurism by foreign elements", the statement
added.

Almost all the oil exports of Saudi Arabia, Iraq, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar and Iran itself, at least 15 million barrels per day, are shipped through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Saudi minister denounced the attack on the vessels, saying it "aims to undermine the freedom of maritime navigation and the security of oil supplies to consumers all over the world."

He also urged the international community to "protect the safety of maritime navigation and the security of oil tankers, to mitigate against the adverse consequences of such incidents on energy markets, and the danger they pose to the global economy."

The UAE had earlier categorically denied reported on social media of massive explosions in oil tankers in the emirate.

The Pentagon said on Friday that it was deploying an amphibious assault ship and a Patriot missile battery to the Middle East to bolster an aircraft carrier force sent to counter alleged Iranian threats.

The increasing tensions come after Tehran said Wednesday it had stopped respecting limits on its nuclear activities agreed under a 2015 deal with major powers.

Iran said it was responding to the sweeping unilateral sanctions that Washington has re-imposed since it quit the agreement one year ago, which have dealt a severe blow to the Iranian economy.

Pompeo revised his travel plans to include a visit to Brussels on Monday to hold talks with French, British and German officials on "pressing matters" including Iran, a State Department official said.

As a result, the top US diplomat is scrapping a stop expected on Monday in Moscow, but will still head to the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi on Tuesday to meet President Vladimir Putin and foreign minister Sergei Lavrov.

Sometimes I lurk on the Pakistan subreddit to get a feel for the zeitgeist inside their elite class. The forum is populated entirely by RAPEs or West-based Pakis. No sign of any mango abduls.

Up to about a month ago, in case any article showing Pakistan in a bad light was posted, they used to be full of bluster and laugh it off. They did the same thing when news of the Balakot surgical strike came in. They tried to present a confident face to the world.

But for the last 3 weeks, I am seeing plenty of rona-dhona whenever any news about Pak's bankrupt economy or the IMF bailout is posted. The ratio of bravado to shalwar-browning is 50-50. The mask seems to have slipped.

It seems their worsening Dekho-no-money is really pinching the RAPEs hard.

The Pakis sure know who their friends in India are, and they leverage them to the hilt.
Some thoughts on this issue.

Looks like Shri Ganpat Rai has made Pakistan his permanent home!

But jokes apart, NEVER trust Terroristan, ESPECIALLY when they offer ceasefire / de-escalation. What this statement from Pakistan means is that they are really hurting due to the relentless whacking by the Indian Army since Pulwama / Balakot.

Of course, being practically bankrupt, plus an IMF which is making them grovel for bakhsheesh like never before helps too.

THIS is the reason why they are suddenly smoking the peace pipe, in addition to the dope that they are otherwise addicted to.
And this is not the first time they are doing so, mind you.

On 12 January 2002, the world saw a mightily shaken up Musharraf come on television and ‘promise’ that no Pakistani territory would henceforth be used for terror against India.

You know what prompted this?

It happened when he realized that this time India meant business.

It happened when he saw the way the Indian Armed forces had mobilized in the immediate aftermath of the Parliament Attack, all set to teach Pakis a good lesson once and for all.

Interestingly, by making this statement, he more or less acknowledged Pakistan sponsored terror.

Btw, it was the same Musharraf who had PUBLICLY felicitated terrorist Ilyas Kashmiri for bringing the head of an Indian Army soldier from the LoC not very long ago.

It was the same Musharraf who has been repeatedly humiliated by the Indian Army

This brings me back to the basic premise behind this blog – Pakistan offering an olive branch.

We’d be fools to be taken in by it.

Just as their proxies come back stronger after every ‘Ramzan Ceasefire’ in the Valley, so will the Pak Army.

This offer is not that of a ceasefire, but a tactical retreat instead.

A tactical retreat because their bankrupt economy can no longer sustain such prolonged engagements.

A tactical retreat so that they can go back to licking their wounds.

A tactical retreat so that once their wounds heal and logistics replenished, they can go back to being .. well .. themselves.

A tactical retreat because the much anticipated baksheesh from IMF is taking a tad bit longer.

Let’s be clear folks – this ‘offer’ is not due to a change of heart, but is more about making a virtue out of a necessity because they just cannot carry on any longer.

This is not the time for us to repeat past follies and show magnanimity yet again.

Throughout our history, we’ve pardoned an inexcusable number of Ghauris an inexcusable number of times. And we all know what we have to show for it – Zilch. One often wonder what might have been, had we NOT been magnanimous even one of those times.

Bottomline: This is not the time to smoke the peace pipe.

On the contrary, this is the time to let the dagger thrust in their backsides, remain their, if not pushing it deeper. The enemy is hurting. The Valley is relatively calm, despite the onset of summers. Let it remain thus.

Verifiable dismantling of terror infrastructure and handing over off JEM, LET leaderships, plus Dawood (dead or alive) - that should be India's position. Otherwise, look for targets of opportunity in Pakistan every 6 months.

Yes. I am quite serious. But maybe the topic is not ripe for discussion right now, but maybe a few months after election results. Some geopolitical game rules are likely to be reset by uncle.
This is loose talk. The responsible people who will implement these things know what to do and how to do it much better than aam jingos like us. Premature, loose talk from our side can result in NPA attacks, peacenik nonsense and other such. We can all build scenarios etc. Lets not give the enemy any chance or idea what we can do. Even the scenarios thread should not be too active beyond some tactical plays.

If that doesn't happen, the we have far bigger worries than concessions on the Pakistan front.

For 2014 election % of seats by other were 12.7% i.e 68 seats . These are seats other then any major political party.

So if BJP need 20-30 seats (to reduce dependency) it won't be that big of a problem. Individuals could join BJP after election to boost the numbers.

Parliamentary vs presidential
The Westminster system of parliamentary democracy, though it delivers effectively in England and is fervently admired in Pakistan, is intrinsically ill-suited to the prevailing realities of this land, its people and their needs. Instead, it perniciously and effectively serves political mafias, power brokers and feudal cliques — only to maintain their stranglehold on power without interruption.
Most Pakistanis are convinced that the presidential system is dictatorial — a one-man rule.
I am no fan of the US, but the presidential form of democracy that has spanned 45 governments amply demonstrates that this system gives far better protection from dictators than the parliamentary system. The presidential system holds firmly even when a cavalier, myopic individual is on the seat, and effectively contains and protects the country and its people from harm. Changing its model of government to the presidential system is the best way to ensure a democracy that works in Pakistan.
Wow, going by the peanut gallery comments for the article, may be some Paki worthies (including the author who seems to have a not so good grasp on the history of governance) are actually thinking about this system. This was discussed just recently here, right? I think BR was ahead of the curve again on this one. May be a 'soft coup' in the making?
