We lay like corpses’: Bangladesh’s 1970s rape camp survivors speak out - Lucy Lamble

Award-winning documentary Rising Silence preserves the testimony of some of the 200,000 women abducted during the country’s war of independence.

In 1971, during the nine-month war that gave Bangladesh its independence from then West Pakistan, four sisters – Amina, Maleka, Mukhlesa and Budhi Begum – were abducted by Pakistani soldiers and local collaborators. They were among the more than 200,000 women held in rape camps and were detained for two and a half months.

“Twenty-two of us would lie like corpses in that room,” says Maleka as she explains how her elder sister Buhdi, “unable to bear the pain”, died before they were released.

Four decades on, Mukhlesa, who had crouched in water trying to evade the kidnappers, shows film-maker Leesa Gazi the sites of atrocities she witnessed. She explains how the soldiers took the women with them wherever they went, placing them to the fore as a human shield.

The sisters’ stories are part of Gazi’s award-winning documentary, Rising Silence, screened on Tuesday in London, which preserves the testimony of some of the few women who are still alive, several of whom have died since filming.

Gazi, a British-Bangladeshi actor and playwright, was herself a teenager when she first heard about the “Birangona” women. Their stories had been strangely absent from her school history books but her father, a former freedom fighter, described seeing hundreds of women standing back to back in trucks on their way to the capital, Dhaka. Gazi resolved to find out more about their story.

What the women had experienced was one of the first recorded examples of rape being used as a weapon of war in the 20th century.

On their release, witnessed by Gazi’s father, the women would be awarded the honorific title of “Birangona”, a war-heroine (literally a brave or courageous woman) by Mujibur Rahman, the “father of the Bengali nation”. He ordered rehabilitation centres with vocational training for those whose families wouldn’t take them back.

Rahman was assassinated in 1975, while he was serving as prime minister, and in the political upheaval that followed, the centres were shut and the women’s ordeal was hidden from view. They had to endure decades of shaming and isolation, discrimination that affected the next generation too.

A founding member of the Komola Collective, which tells stories from a female perspective, Gazi has now met more than 80 Birangona. Her early meetings in 2010 initially led to a play.

Many of the women are poor and frail. Most lost their livelihoods, their children, parents or husbands, but for Gazi, that does not define them. Her concern is that they are dying out and with them their rich stories, and so she returned with a camera.

The film has been shown in Bangladesh, Iceland, Italy and the Netherlands, winning honours at festivals from Dhaka to Moondance, and most recently at the Asian Media Awards.

Gazi argues that if we ignore or dismiss historic sexual violence, then it will never stop. “We need to pay attention and listen to survivors’ stories,” she says.

Image

“We could dismiss their accounts as isolated incidents of a forgotten war in a distant land, committed nearly 50 years ago. The problem is that the same pattern of sexual violence and rape in armed conflicts continues to be used today,” she says, referencing events in Myanmar and South Sudan.

Society was often “not there”, for the women affected, Gazi argues, but she celebrates the fact that “women were there for each other”.

Uncovering the women’s stories has left Gazi with big questions. “Sometimes I ask myself, how can a woman’s body instigate so much hatred and so much violence?”

Again, she sees a pattern. “If we need to shame a family, we go after their daughters, if we need to shame a community, we go after their daughters, if we need to shame a country, we go after their daughters. That’s the same mindset that’s transcending in war and conflicts and we must stop it.”

Gazi insists the film is not about rape. “It is about the strength of women who have picked themselves up after facing brutal physical and emotional abuse.” Instead it shows “their will to survive, and their fighting spirit in the face of rejection and stigma, for the sin of having been raped”.

Since 2015, the Bangladeshi government has begun giving pensions to the Birangona in recognition of what the women contributed to the birth of the nation.

Mukhlesa Begum shows Gazi the Khuniya pond in Thakurgaon district, explaining how it turned red during the war. The bodies of more than 2,000 freedom fighters are believed to have been dumped here. “People piled on people,” she says.

“We saved four people from there. People were disappearing from Bangladesh. We had to save them – Hindu, Muslim, or Santal [indigenous people]. We had to free our country.”

Writer Aatish Taseer loses OCI status, govt says he hid info on Pakistani father -TNN

HIGHLIGHTS

- Aatish Taseer’s Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status was canceled on Thursday, following a statement by the home ministry

- The MHA said, “Taseer was given the opportunity to submit his reply/objections regarding his PIO/OCI cards, but he failed to dispute the notice"

NEW DELHI: Author Aatish Taseer’s Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status was canceled on Thursday, following a statement by the home ministry that he had suppressed information that his late father was of Pakistani origin.

The home ministry statement came in the wake of reports that the trigger for the action was an article critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi (titled ‘Divider in Chief ’) which Taseer had written for Time magazine in May. Later that month, after Modi returned to office, the magazine carried an article by another writer calling the PM a “unifier”.

Taseer’s father, Salman Taseer, was governor of Punjab (inPakistan) and one of that country’s most high profile politicians when he was assassinated by a bodyguard in 2011 for defending a Christian woman accused of blasphemy. His mother is Indian columnist Tavleen Singh.

In his book, ‘Stranger To History,’ published in 2007, Taseer wrote at length about his father and how his mother raised him as a single parent. As social media erupted over the issue, Taseer disputed MHA’s claim that he had been given the opportunity to respond to the clarifications sought with regard to his submissions to the government.

The MHA denied that the Time article had anything to do with its action. In a post on Twitter, the MHA said, “Taseer was given the opportunity to submit his reply/objections regarding his PIO/OCI cards, but he failed to dispute the notice. Thus, Aatish Ali Taseer becomes ineligible to hold an OCI card as per the Citizenship Act, 1955. He has clearly not complied with very basic requirements and hidden information.”

Taseer put out a part of his email exchange with the Indian consul general in New York on Twitter and said, “This is untrue. Here is the consul general’s acknowledgement of my reply. I was given not the full 21 days but rather 24 hours to reply. I’ve heard nothing from the ministry since.”

Earlier on Thursday, MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said in a media briefing that he was unaware of this specific case. However, he said if an individual was “no longer eligible and if it fits into a certain criterion of that cancellation of an OCI card then the OCI card will be cancelled”.

The government’s action was criticised as it came months after the Time article with some commentators saying it smacked of vindictiveness. Officials, however, pointed out that OCI rules clearly state that no person, whose either parent, grandparents or great grandparents were citizens of Pakistan and Bangladesh (or any country the government may specify) could not be eligible for the OCI card. Submitting false information, according to the rules, would lead to cancellation of the OCI card and could also mean blacklisting for entry into India thereafter.

In either case, he was never eligible for the OCI card because of having a paki parent and shouldn't have been granted one int he first place. Doesn't matter if that parent was married to his other parent or not. The govt. is merely fixing a mistake.

Pakistan's U-turn: Kartarpur pilgrims to carry passports

HIGHLIGHTS

- Pakistan army spokesperson Asif Ghafoor was quoted on Thursday by a Pakistan channel as saying that passport was essential for Indian pilgrims visiting Kartarpur

- On November 1, Khan said he had waived two requirements related to passport and registration 10 days in advance for Sikhs coming for pilgrimage to Kartarpur from India

NEW DELHI: Faced with conflicting reports from Pakistan about the identity document Kartarpur pilgrims need to carry, the Indian government on Thursday declared India will go purely by the MoU that calls for pilgrims to have their passports on them.

After Pakistan PM Imran Khan tweeted recently that pilgrims will not be required to carry their passports, Pakistan army spokesperson Asif Ghafoor was quoted on Thursday by a Pakistan channel as saying that passport was essential for Indian pilgrims visiting Kartarpur.

“As of today, there is a bilateral document which has been signed between the two sides, which clearly specifies the documents needed to undertake the visit,” said MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar, adding that if the MoU had to be amended, it could not be done unilaterally by any one side. Ghafoor had earlier been quoted as saying that entry would be a “legal one under a permit on a passport-based identity”.

Pakistan army chief Asif Ghafoor had earlier been quoted as saying that entry would be a “legal one under a permit on a passport based identity. There will be no compromise on security or sovereignty”. MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said there was a sense of confusion a few days before the inauguration because of the conflicting statements from Pakistan.

“Conflicting reports are coming from Pakistan. Sometimes, they say passport is needed and sometimes they say it is not required,” he said. On November 1, Khan, while announcing the completion of the Kartarpur Corridor on Twitter, said he had waived two requirements related to passport and registration 10 days in advance for Sikhs coming for pilgrimage to Kartarpur from India.

Confirming that it had registered a strong protest against the display of Khalistan terrorists in a video on Kartarpur, the Indian government also asked for Pakistan to act on its assurance that it won’t allow any anti-India activity at the pilgrimage site.

Pakistan is learnt to have said the video being circulated on social media is a morphed version of the original song it had released. Kumar also said that Pakistan is yet to confirm the list of Indian dignitaries who will attend the Kartarpur opening ceremony on the Pakistani side.

“We are presuming that all names we have shared with Pakistani side for inaugural jatha have been cleared,” he said. The MEA spokesperson also asked Pakistan to ensure adequate security to Indian dignitaries attending the event.

That is correct. The Irish didn’t become independent until 1921. The Jallianwalah Bagh massacre happened in 1919. Irish officers were part of the British empire.
Someone in civil service told me that the Lt Governor initiated departmental action against Reginald Dwyer for excessive use of force at Jalianwala Baug and was sent back to England as a punishment. But it was the Lt Governor who was shot dead by Indian revolutionaries.

No doubt, when he applied, he was advised to simply leave out that information and the babus in charge will simply "go by the book" and make their decision based strictly on what was stated in the form. In fact, there would have been no reason to assume that babus concerned would have been familiar with taseer's writings.

Or, being as well-connected and highly-connected as he is, the application was just "taken care of" by some senior babu at the request of Mummy Tavleen.

(The beauty of getting away with this kind of omission and lying on immigration forms--in the US, and it seems, in India, is that, thereafter, your b&lls are forever in the grip of the babus, who are probably not as stupid as they look.)

Incidentally, taseer's sh&@tting on his motherland is not a matter of what happened this year. Several years ago, around July 4th, he published an op-ed in WSJ celebrating his US citizenship, and expressing gratitude to US for the fact that he could marry the man of his choice, and how India was ever so backward and primitive for not affording him the same facility. He kvetched at length about the time, when, according to him, he was entering India on his PIO card, and the immigration official made sneering insinuations about his homosexuality.

Aatish Taseer and his cheerleaders go loco: Here is how they are lying and deceiving about him losing his OCI
While the MHA statement only came yesterday after The Print published conjecture about Taseer’s OCI being cancelled for a critical article he had written in May in TIME, the saga began in September 2019 as Taseer admits in his article today. In the article headlined “I am Indian. Why is the Government Sending Me Into Exile?”, Aatish Taseer makes no rebuttal of the claim itself. Not once, in his article or on Twitter has Aatish disputed the claim that he concealed the fact that his father was a Pakistani.

While Taseer’s silence on the matter is a clear indication that he indeed did not mention material facts in his OCI application, he has today taken to TIME to write an article full of conjectures, victim playing and over-all lies to claim that the Modi government is somehow being vindictive for an article he wrote back in May.
What Sushant wilfully forgets is that Adnan Sami gave up his Pakistani citizenship to take Indian citizenship while Aatish Taseer wants to flaunt his British citizenship and then claim, that in contravention of the law, he has a right to hold the OCI card. What Sami did was legal. He gave up his Pakistani passport to apply to become an Indian citizen. What Aatish Taseer wants is the privilege of holding an OCI card, while remaining British citizenship in contravention of the law that makes him ineligible for OCI in the first place.
There were several others who made similar arguments, but the crux of the issue remained strikingly the same – ‘Aatish serves our purpose. Leave him alone and let him break the law!’ Unfortunately for the Lutyens cabal, that they are the “English speaking elite”, as Aatish himself puts it, doesn’t make them eligible to break the laws. That they consider themselves above the unwashed masses, doesn’t make them special. That their coterie assumes to rule the narrative, doesn’t mean anything when it comes to cold, hard facts. Aatish Taseer’s Hinduphobia, while grotesque was not the reason his OCI is being cancelled. Aatish Tasser’s call for Muslims to unite is not why he is put through his inevitable fate. That he wrote a lie-laden article, is not the reason either. If it were, there would be no five-star journalists left in India. Aatish Taseer is not eligible for OCI because his father was a Pakistani and on top of that, he concealed that fact. That a Hinduphobic Islamist’s OCI is being cancelled, is just a bonus – an unintended one.

He cannot say, he picked the surname on his own choice.

So he got his previous OCI/PIO bypassing the rules, using the friends in the delhi circuit. Fundamentally a immigration fraud.

Of all the things that are out of whack with his story beginning from the circumstances of his birth, I could never understand this one. Honouring an individual whose only contribution was to seduce his mum with some ordoo shayri; and then to disown the child he had helped create. If this isn't Pakpasandi, I don't know what is.

Aatish was brought up by Tavleen’s parents and spent his childhood with his Sikh cousins. The discovery of his being different from them makes amusing reading. One afternoon playing with his cousins he went to a quiet corner of the garden to empty his bladder. A cousin who joined him to do the same stared at Aatish’s penis with awe and wonder. He came back to announce to his assembly of uncles and aunts: "Aatish ka susu nanga hai!" They broke into hysterics. He was the only boy in the family who had been circumcised. He was Muslim.

Why is Aatish Taseer, a British national crying hoarse. OCI card is a privilege and not a right.
He can next time apply for Indian visa and come over (If visa gets approved).

If such a famous person with famous parents can get OCI card despite Paki father, I wonder how many others are there with similar connection and OCI card.

Though my father's attitude went down well in Pakistan, it had caused considerable tension between us. I am half-Indian, raised in Delhi by my Indian mother: India is a country that I consider my own.
As for his paki father....all I can say is that, the only good paki is a dead paki...

Pakistan has been trying to cover up the latest Polio outbreak.
Dangerous "eradicated" polio strain this time.

Jr taseer is not gay. He was engaged to a firangi girl but they broke off. He spent his early years in the UK. Then some years in India. He was trying to get US citizenship for long time. He then became gay(or claims to) and soon got his US visa. I don't think he is gay.

His full name is aatish ali taseer.

some paki pasand twitterati bumpkin accused the GoI of playing up his muslim identity. Where was any iota doubt ever left as to what he was.

his lootyens connections undoubtedly got him the OCI card.

If that is his name, then what's wrong in saying it.

with such a name, they must have also taken the knife to him.

Maybe applying for visa but now the cat is 'out of the bag' getting visitor visa is going to be difficult.
I know this for a fact as Paki-doctors find it very difficult to attend conferences in India even though they have 'Mallika-e-UK' signed passport :D

Maybe not. Lying on the form can also get you blacklisted.

Why is his green card valid only for TWO years? Is it because it is derived through his US Wife (he is not gay?) ? If he divorced her before GC became permanent then his GC would be kaput. So, does he still have GC?

it appears that he doesn't have a wife, he has a husband.

truly paki, in all the grotesque mental imaging that it evokes.

and hence the smart jihadi move to the US.

For this type of thing, he would surely have been bull cutletted by his disapproving fellow british paki jihadi brethren.

the usual end to such folks in jihadi justice terms is being politely and solicitously helped off the roof a nearby convenient high rise.

and, just because the pencil is "sharpened", it doesn't automatically mean that you have to dip it in poison and write some contrived jehadi crap which ends up focussing the light squarely on your sorry ass.

that should learn him good.
